Amen. 00:01:40.01\00:01:43.71 Ranko, we have been looking at Jesus. 00:01:43.72\00:01:45.41 We've noticed that 00:01:45.42\00:01:46.41 He is a powerful teacher and preacher, 00:01:46.42\00:01:49.33 but He's also a doer. He is a healer. 00:01:49.34\00:01:51.72 He's involved in ministry. 00:01:51.73\00:01:53.55 He is a Savior and compassionate. 00:01:53.56\00:01:55.33 He is one who fulfills 00:01:55.34\00:01:57.66 those many prophecies of the Messiah. 00:01:57.67\00:02:00.08 So Matthew has been painting this portrait of his Savior, 00:02:00.09\00:02:05.03 the one he followed as we say last time. 00:02:05.04\00:02:07.81 Give us a little idea of what do we begin 00:02:07.82\00:02:10.40 to see here in Chapter 13. 00:02:10.41\00:02:14.16 When we go to the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew, 00:02:14.17\00:02:16.76 do you remember what we read in Chapter 4, 4:23? 00:02:16.77\00:02:20.77 That Jesus went and He was teaching in the synagogues. 00:02:20.78\00:02:25.40 People were there, coming to the synagogue, 00:02:25.41\00:02:27.64 Jesus would teach them. 00:02:27.65\00:02:30.22 But more and more, 00:02:30.23\00:02:31.71 with every passing week the opposition 00:02:31.72\00:02:34.83 were rising against Jesus. 00:02:36.24\00:02:39.04 And the last time, we started in Chapter 11 00:02:39.05\00:02:42.90 that actually the Pharisees for the first time 00:02:42.91\00:02:46.27 stood in the position to Jesus 00:02:46.28\00:02:48.78 calling actually His work as the work of Satan. 00:02:48.79\00:02:52.98 And Jesus for the first time had to address 00:02:52.99\00:02:55.47 the Pharisees in the harsh way to give them warning 00:02:55.48\00:02:59.19 telling them that the blasphemy 00:02:59.20\00:03:01.18 against the Holy Spirit will never be 00:03:01.19\00:03:03.37 forgiven to any person, He meant to them, okay? 00:03:03.38\00:03:07.16 In this world or the world to come. 00:03:07.17\00:03:10.18 And actually, if we go to the rest of Chapter 12, 00:03:10.19\00:03:14.52 we will see that Jesus really made 00:03:14.53\00:03:17.09 those harsh things against the Pharisees. 00:03:17.10\00:03:19.47 So the door of the synagogues, 00:03:19.48\00:03:23.50 they were becoming more and more close, close to Jesus. 00:03:23.51\00:03:27.37 Jesus could not come to the synagogues 00:03:27.38\00:03:28.95 and teach any longer. 00:03:28.96\00:03:30.46 Jesus would go to the open space 00:03:30.47\00:03:32.58 and gives the teachings. 00:03:32.59\00:03:34.37 So can you imagine, Jesus is there teaching. 00:03:34.38\00:03:38.79 Who is there? We have people, 00:03:38.80\00:03:40.53 sometimes 1,000s of them, but on the other side 00:03:40.54\00:03:42.85 there are Pharisees spying on Jesus, 00:03:42.86\00:03:45.99 watching and measuring every word to Jesus said. 00:03:46.00\00:03:49.99 It is at that point that Jesus 00:03:50.00\00:03:52.26 changes the method of His teaching. 00:03:52.27\00:03:55.65 It must have been a sad and oppressive thing 00:03:55.66\00:03:58.82 that all the time 00:03:58.83\00:03:59.82 He's having to watch and worry about what He says. 00:03:59.83\00:04:02.22 Every word measured. 00:04:02.23\00:04:03.22 Because someone's trying to get you. 00:04:03.23\00:04:04.40 And you know, some of you may live 00:04:04.41\00:04:06.70 in a situation in a marriage, 00:04:06.71\00:04:08.25 in a work situation where it's tense 00:04:08.26\00:04:10.55 and you always have to be careful 00:04:10.56\00:04:12.83 because somebody's gonna take 00:04:12.84\00:04:13.83 what you say and twist it around. 00:04:13.84\00:04:16.03 Jesus knows what you're going through. 00:04:16.04\00:04:17.38 He experienced opposition much greater 00:04:17.39\00:04:20.29 and much greater extent. 00:04:20.30\00:04:21.31 Okay, Glenn, can I tell you something? 00:04:21.32\00:04:24.06 We are all the students of the Bible 00:04:24.07\00:04:25.76 and sometimes we study the Bible, 00:04:25.77\00:04:27.78 we discover the beautiful things about Bible 00:04:27.79\00:04:30.16 and we tried to proclaim it, 00:04:30.17\00:04:31.73 and it's so hard sometimes to go 00:04:31.74\00:04:33.63 and to preach it when you know 00:04:33.64\00:04:34.97 that they're people just sitting there, 00:04:34.98\00:04:36.66 instead of trying to see those nuance in the Bible, 00:04:36.67\00:04:39.91 they measure every word to find what is wrong, 00:04:39.92\00:04:42.11 to find one detail to disagree, et cetera. 00:04:42.12\00:04:44.47 This is such an experience that Jesus, 00:04:44.48\00:04:46.74 that Jesus went through. 00:04:46.75\00:04:49.06 May I read the beginning of Chapter 13. 00:04:49.07\00:04:50.78 "On the same day Jesus went out from the house 00:04:50.79\00:04:52.61 and sat by the sea and great multitudes 00:04:52.62\00:04:54.53 were gathered together to Him, 00:04:54.54\00:04:56.32 so that He got into a boat and sat, 00:04:56.33\00:04:58.06 and the whole multitude stood on the shore." 00:04:58.07\00:05:00.38 And then here's something new in verse 3. 00:05:00.39\00:05:02.28 "Then He spoke many things to them in parables." 00:05:02.29\00:05:05.52 Actually in Greek, it says, He began. 00:05:05.53\00:05:09.12 He started teaching them in parables, 00:05:09.13\00:05:12.38 so this is really the beginning. 00:05:12.39\00:05:13.86 Prior to that, we don't have any parables of Jesus. 00:05:13.87\00:05:16.19 We had short metaphors like to build us 00:05:16.20\00:05:19.13 in the summit of the mount, but not parables. 00:05:19.14\00:05:21.62 Now, for the first time, 00:05:21.63\00:05:22.81 we have Jesus changes the method of His teaching. 00:05:22.82\00:05:25.33 So we have to ask why, what's the reason? 00:05:25.34\00:05:27.73 First, let's explain what the parable really is. 00:05:27.74\00:05:30.60 The word parable in English 00:05:30.61\00:05:32.24 comes from the Greek, parabola. 00:05:32.25\00:05:35.30 Para means by or beside. 00:05:35.31\00:05:38.12 Bola means to cast. 00:05:38.13\00:05:39.87 So what is the meaning of the parable? 00:05:39.88\00:05:41.27 It means to cast beside. 00:05:41.28\00:05:43.70 You see, you have a saying which is enigmatic, 00:05:43.71\00:05:46.84 difficult and hard time to understand. 00:05:46.85\00:05:49.26 Then you cast, you put, 00:05:49.27\00:05:51.32 you throw an illustration beside 00:05:51.33\00:05:54.85 and that illustration really provides 00:05:54.86\00:05:57.94 the insight in that hard saying 00:05:57.95\00:05:59.99 what you're trying to say. This is what a parable is. 00:06:00.00\00:06:02.16 Parable is simply given to illustrate 00:06:02.17\00:06:05.11 something that is usually 00:06:05.12\00:06:06.59 hard to understand or hard to explain. 00:06:06.60\00:06:10.86 All right, so we got an idea of the word. 00:06:10.87\00:06:14.00 Why does He use this teaching technique? 00:06:14.01\00:06:16.68 So evidently, we already provide 00:06:16.69\00:06:18.88 that little bit of background. 00:06:18.89\00:06:21.87 There is a two-fold reason 00:06:21.88\00:06:24.46 and purpose of Jesus teaching parables. 00:06:24.47\00:06:27.58 The first one we saw, 00:06:27.59\00:06:29.80 it's because there are many spies measuring every word, 00:06:29.81\00:06:34.91 trying to distort everything 00:06:34.92\00:06:36.85 what Jesus said and spread them among the people, 00:06:36.86\00:06:39.18 so the first reason, 00:06:39.19\00:06:40.49 why Jesus used the parables was to disarm the hostility 00:06:40.50\00:06:45.00 of the listeners to introduce the teaching 00:06:45.01\00:06:48.32 and that Jesus could not be accused of something saying 00:06:48.33\00:06:51.96 that was inappropriate, 00:06:51.97\00:06:53.32 that was against the tradition, et cetera. 00:06:53.33\00:06:55.23 You know, you use the parable. 00:06:55.24\00:06:57.17 And you illustrate that saying, but people-- 00:06:57.18\00:07:03.09 you cover yourself in many different ways. 00:07:03.10\00:07:06.34 So it was a way of teaching truth 00:07:06.35\00:07:07.78 but hiding some dimension because of the opposition. 00:07:07.79\00:07:10.70 Yes. All right? 00:07:10.71\00:07:12.28 There is also the second reason 00:07:12.29\00:07:14.22 why Jesus used the parables. 00:07:14.23\00:07:16.80 And it was to illustrate and to explain the truth. 00:07:16.81\00:07:21.27 This is really the main reason why Jesus used the parables. 00:07:21.28\00:07:26.26 So please, Glenn, allow me just to explain 00:07:26.27\00:07:30.03 what we mean that. 00:07:30.04\00:07:31.03 Number one, is to create interest among the listeners. 00:07:31.04\00:07:35.03 You know when pastor is there on the pulpit 00:07:35.04\00:07:37.09 and wants to attract the attention of the people, 00:07:37.10\00:07:39.56 you start using illustration and parable. 00:07:39.57\00:07:42.77 Boy, suddenly everybody is listening. 00:07:42.78\00:07:45.91 All ages, we all love it. 00:07:45.92\00:07:47.07 All the ages, children and adults. 00:07:47.08\00:07:49.41 Number one-- number two, 00:07:49.42\00:07:51.81 to create a truth concrete 00:07:51.82\00:07:53.94 through the commonly familiar real experience. 00:07:53.95\00:07:56.48 Jesus associated the truth with daily tasks. 00:07:56.49\00:07:59.24 I think that's such an important point, 00:07:59.25\00:08:00.41 Ranko, you're saying that, 00:08:00.42\00:08:01.64 Jesus in His observation of human life 00:08:01.65\00:08:04.26 found connections to heavenly things. 00:08:04.27\00:08:06.39 So heavenly things were explained through earthly. 00:08:06.40\00:08:08.70 Can you imagine, 00:08:08.71\00:08:10.01 I stand to preach here in North America 00:08:10.02\00:08:11.78 and I use illustration about the soccer game? 00:08:11.79\00:08:14.40 Yeah, that's not relevant to the people. 00:08:14.41\00:08:16.38 But if I use baseball, everybody will listen to that. 00:08:16.39\00:08:19.88 It's just, you know, an example. 00:08:19.89\00:08:22.23 Jesus used the illustration from daily life of people, 00:08:22.24\00:08:27.16 farmers, sowing the seed, fisherman, a fish, 00:08:27.17\00:08:31.22 women who are baking bread, et cetera. 00:08:31.23\00:08:33.88 So this is very important. Number three, 00:08:33.89\00:08:37.20 parables could be understood by everybody. 00:08:37.21\00:08:40.16 Everybody. 00:08:40.17\00:08:42.19 Children, adults, everybody can understand parables. 00:08:42.20\00:08:45.79 Number four, to clarify the message by teaching 00:08:45.80\00:08:48.91 unknown through known. 00:08:48.92\00:08:50.81 The Kingdom of God is like. Okay. 00:08:50.82\00:08:56.53 The next one, to enable listeners 00:08:56.54\00:08:58.83 to discover the truth for himself or herself. 00:08:58.84\00:09:02.57 This is not in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:09:02.58\00:09:04.23 You remember the parable of the Good Samaritan? 00:09:04.24\00:09:07.75 Who is my neighbor? 00:09:07.76\00:09:09.28 Can you imagine if Jesus said to that person, 00:09:09.29\00:09:11.33 even Samaritan is your neighbor. 00:09:11.34\00:09:13.71 And the explanation of Jesus 00:09:15.45\00:09:16.77 would be rejected from the very start. 00:09:16.78\00:09:18.58 So you're saying a parable 00:09:18.59\00:09:19.74 takes the listener on the journey 00:09:19.75\00:09:22.44 and they become part of the exploration of-- 00:09:22.45\00:09:24.69 Jesus asked that person, 00:09:24.70\00:09:26.42 so who was the neighbor of these people who said, 00:09:26.43\00:09:29.64 "Do you want to help him?" 00:09:29.65\00:09:30.64 He did not want to use Samaritan. 00:09:30.65\00:09:33.00 Jesus said, "You go and do likewise." 00:09:33.01\00:09:36.31 Parable is a powerful tool. 00:09:36.32\00:09:38.89 And the last one, 00:09:38.90\00:09:40.03 to make listeners discover the truth for themselves 00:09:40.04\00:09:42.77 and to judge their own action. 00:09:42.78\00:09:46.41 By entering into the store. Entering, yes, yes. 00:09:46.42\00:09:49.02 It reflects back on themselves. 00:09:49.03\00:09:50.68 Reflects back. Okay. So we see this wonderful 00:09:50.69\00:09:53.84 concept of parables that He uses. 00:09:53.85\00:09:56.78 And what a lesson for us today. 00:09:56.79\00:09:58.21 I think all of us we, you know, 00:09:58.22\00:09:59.98 as you share your faith with someone, 00:09:59.99\00:10:01.27 you have someone you love, a family member, 00:10:01.28\00:10:03.52 someone at work, a neighbor, 00:10:03.53\00:10:05.59 You're looking for those connecting points. 00:10:05.60\00:10:07.78 You're looking for those things 00:10:07.79\00:10:09.03 that that will help you illustrate the things of faith 00:10:09.04\00:10:12.59 that mattered so much to you. This is part of mission. 00:10:12.60\00:10:15.39 This is part of service and ministry. 00:10:15.40\00:10:17.68 Yeah, I was-- several years ago, 00:10:17.69\00:10:22.32 I was at one scholarly meeting 00:10:22.33\00:10:25.16 and I heard how scholars were talking among themselves. 00:10:25.17\00:10:27.92 They said, "Boy, all these beautiful findings 00:10:27.93\00:10:33.07 that we bring out of the Bible." 00:10:33.08\00:10:35.16 They said, "We're talking to ourselves. 00:10:35.17\00:10:38.15 How we can make it available to the people?" 00:10:38.16\00:10:40.68 And then the conclusion was, you know, 00:10:40.69\00:10:42.66 these are scholarly people 00:10:42.67\00:10:44.16 don't want to listen to such things. 00:10:44.17\00:10:46.87 And they started discussing and said, 00:10:46.88\00:10:48.90 "But how is that?" And they mentioned some series 00:10:48.91\00:10:52.20 that are really based on stories. 00:10:52.21\00:10:55.77 How they have really great success 00:10:55.78\00:10:58.98 among ordinary people? 00:10:58.99\00:11:00.42 And then they asked, "Why don't we do something 00:11:00.43\00:11:02.67 similar about the Bible studies?" 00:11:02.68\00:11:05.69 And it impacted my teaching. 00:11:05.70\00:11:07.66 When I'm in the classroom, 00:11:07.67\00:11:09.73 of course, sometimes, theology, 00:11:09.74\00:11:12.80 exegesis can be hard and can be boring. 00:11:12.81\00:11:17.20 But I learned something from Jesus. 00:11:17.21\00:11:19.71 I try always to use illustrations. 00:11:19.72\00:11:23.25 Everything what we go 00:11:23.26\00:11:25.52 and deal with the text and try to explain, 00:11:25.53\00:11:27.95 I support it with illustration. 00:11:27.96\00:11:30.06 And boy, my students or my camp meeting audience, 00:11:30.07\00:11:35.17 or when you preach a different church as they said, 00:11:35.18\00:11:37.46 "Wow, suddenly that difficult text becomes clear. 00:11:37.47\00:11:41.36 It becomes close, close to you." 00:11:41.37\00:11:43.20 All over the world and all the cultures stories work. 00:11:43.21\00:11:45.56 And God keeps using stories, yes. 00:11:45.57\00:11:47.15 That's what the Bible is. Yes. 00:11:47.16\00:11:48.72 A Book of the Story of Redemption, you know. 00:11:48.73\00:11:51.15 So Jesus uses these parables. 00:11:51.16\00:11:52.88 He spoke many things to them in parables. 00:11:52.89\00:11:55.55 Now it's interesting you mentioned 00:11:55.56\00:11:56.93 that the parable helps people understand for themselves 00:11:56.94\00:12:01.95 but apparently some people 00:12:01.96\00:12:02.98 didn't always understand, others did. 00:12:02.99\00:12:05.33 So there is some hiddenness 00:12:05.34\00:12:07.21 that sometimes He explains to disciples privately. 00:12:07.22\00:12:10.44 There are some parts of the story 00:12:10.45\00:12:11.91 that not everybody understands publicly. 00:12:11.92\00:12:14.74 So it's quite complex and a wonderful tool 00:12:14.75\00:12:18.81 that He uses to communicate His message. 00:12:18.82\00:12:21.22 Yeah. Talking about the parables, 00:12:21.23\00:12:25.26 we have to understand 00:12:25.27\00:12:27.42 that Jesus did not invent always those parables. 00:12:27.43\00:12:31.46 There are books written. 00:12:31.47\00:12:32.46 And you can see, that many of the parables 00:12:32.47\00:12:34.68 that actually Jesus spoke were already used 00:12:34.69\00:12:37.18 by Rabbis, et cetera, but what Jesus did. 00:12:37.19\00:12:39.89 Jesus simply didn't go and took those parables. 00:12:39.90\00:12:42.65 Jesus always changed their meanings. 00:12:42.66\00:12:46.15 If those parables that Rabbis preached 00:12:46.16\00:12:47.89 where negative, you know, 00:12:47.90\00:12:49.36 Jesus always turned into a positive, et cetera. 00:12:49.37\00:12:52.47 So Jesus really was in the line 00:12:52.48\00:12:54.79 of the common trend of teaching, 00:12:54.80\00:13:00.63 but actually what Jesus did, 00:13:00.64\00:13:03.42 it's something that couldn't be compared 00:13:03.43\00:13:05.47 with any teaching of the Rabbis or any other teachers 00:13:05.48\00:13:10.88 that were during those time delivering their teachings. 00:13:10.89\00:13:14.97 So what Jesus did really was a unique during that time. 00:13:14.98\00:13:18.75 No wonder, no wonder, you have 5,000 people, 00:13:18.76\00:13:22.60 you have 4,000 people. 00:13:22.61\00:13:24.45 For three days, there were almost 00:13:24.46\00:13:26.31 mesmerized by Jesus' teaching. 00:13:26.32\00:13:27.97 They were sitting there. 00:13:27.98\00:13:28.99 They even forgot on their daily necessities like food. 00:13:29.00\00:13:31.43 They have not eaten for three days 00:13:31.44\00:13:33.85 by listening there to Jesus. 00:13:33.86\00:13:35.35 And they responded, they responded, 00:13:35.36\00:13:37.04 they decided to follow Jesus and to be His disciples. 00:13:37.05\00:13:40.50 It says here that the multitude 00:13:40.51\00:13:42.63 stood on the shore to listen to Jesus. 00:13:42.64\00:13:44.67 There was not enough room for them. 00:13:44.68\00:13:46.70 And so this shows the response 00:13:46.71\00:13:50.50 Jesus had a hearing to the people. 00:13:50.51\00:13:52.20 He was speaking to their needs, 00:13:52.21\00:13:53.41 not something irrelevant, 00:13:53.42\00:13:54.88 far off abstract things as you said. 00:13:54.89\00:13:56.77 He took abstract things and brought them 00:13:56.78\00:13:58.97 close into their world, into their lives. 00:13:58.98\00:14:01.60 Through the parables, 00:14:01.61\00:14:03.10 Jesus brought the heavenly truth down to the earth 00:14:03.11\00:14:05.98 that people can understand and accept it. 00:14:05.99\00:14:08.11 Well, I want to learn a little bit more about those parables. 00:14:08.12\00:14:10.27 We're gonna take a break right now 00:14:10.28\00:14:11.60 and then we're gonna come back 00:14:11.61\00:14:12.97 and explore a little bit more 00:14:12.98\00:14:14.20 of Chapter 13 of the Gospel of Matthew. 00:14:14.21\00:14:17.02 We'll be right back. 00:14:17.03\00:14:18.10
