Welcome back, you remember we've been pondering 00:00:01.17\00:00:03.61 what Jesus meant when he said, 00:00:03.62\00:00:05.84 "Come on unto Me and take My yoke upon you, 00:00:05.85\00:00:08.26 and I'll give you rest". 00:00:08.27\00:00:09.82 Let's explore a little bit more 00:00:09.83\00:00:11.43 about this yoke of Jesus. 00:00:11.44\00:00:13.37 So let's be it reminded one more time. 00:00:13.38\00:00:15.55 Among the Jewish people, 00:00:15.56\00:00:17.92 the metaphor of yoke was used 00:00:17.93\00:00:21.27 for the observance of the torah of the law, okay. 00:00:22.73\00:00:26.77 So it's how I live my life with God's law? 00:00:26.78\00:00:28.92 Actually, Jesus used that concept. 00:00:28.93\00:00:31.74 Jesus--also the rest of the New Testament, 00:00:31.75\00:00:35.47 we heard that concept. 00:00:35.48\00:00:36.48 Let's just see the two texts, 00:00:36.49\00:00:38.85 the Book of Acts, Chapter 15 verse 10. 00:00:38.86\00:00:41.15 Oh, you're jumping right into 00:00:41.16\00:00:42.25 the middle of the conflict? Yes. 00:00:42.26\00:00:44.02 In the early church about what should the converts do? 00:00:44.03\00:00:47.41 How much should they follow God's law? 00:00:47.42\00:00:49.69 Acts Chapter 15-- Verse 10. 00:00:49.70\00:00:52.22 "Now therefore why do you test God, 00:00:53.29\00:00:55.97 by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples, 00:00:55.98\00:00:58.68 which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 00:00:58.69\00:01:01.31 So what was the yoke of that 00:01:01.32\00:01:03.84 actually Peter and James are referring here in the text? 00:01:03.85\00:01:07.17 What was that yoke actually Peter was talking? 00:01:07.18\00:01:08.85 What was the yoke? 00:01:08.86\00:01:10.09 Yoke was really the Pharisaic system, 00:01:10.10\00:01:13.74 trying to dissect the law of God 00:01:14.93\00:01:16.75 and focus on so many details. 00:01:16.76\00:01:18.88 Actually, they made such system 00:01:18.89\00:01:20.51 that people could hardly practice all those details. 00:01:20.52\00:01:24.23 It was a heavy burden put on their shoulder. 00:01:24.24\00:01:27.23 Let's remember that legalism is a problem 00:01:27.24\00:01:31.00 of the misuse of the law. 00:01:31.01\00:01:32.30 The law as we saw earlier, 00:01:32.31\00:01:33.58 Jesus didn't come to do away with it. 00:01:33.59\00:01:35.46 Everything about to do's and don'ts etc. 00:01:35.47\00:01:38.67 So, the law is not put away. 00:01:38.68\00:01:39.90 Jesus doesn't say throw your yoke away. 00:01:39.91\00:01:41.86 He says "I've a new way for you to live". 00:01:41.87\00:01:43.59 Let's go another text, Galatians 5:1. 00:01:43.60\00:01:47.84 Okay and we're dealing Galatians deals 00:01:47.85\00:01:50.36 with some of the same issues. 00:01:50.37\00:01:51.48 The same concept. The same concept. 00:01:51.49\00:01:53.53 Galatians 5:1, "Stand fast therefore 00:01:53.54\00:01:56.15 in the liberty by which Christ has made you free, 00:01:56.16\00:01:58.78 and do not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage." 00:01:58.79\00:02:01.96 What was the problem with Galatians? 00:02:01.97\00:02:04.04 First they received the gospel 00:02:04.05\00:02:05.89 and after that they went 00:02:05.90\00:02:06.99 to that Pharisaic system of the laws 00:02:07.00\00:02:10.04 to get and Paul told them you were in slavery 00:02:10.05\00:02:13.97 and you're going now back 00:02:13.98\00:02:15.16 putting that yoke up on yourself, 00:02:15.17\00:02:16.99 so it's clearly the observance of the-- 00:02:17.00\00:02:19.02 Of the yoke of bondage. 00:02:19.03\00:02:20.29 You're saying that there is a radical difference 00:02:20.30\00:02:22.31 between how Jesus says we live our lives 00:02:22.32\00:02:24.50 and how the religious establishment at the time. 00:02:24.51\00:02:26.99 Keep in mind here 00:02:27.00\00:02:28.80 that actually Jesus talks about My yoke. 00:02:28.81\00:02:33.28 So there is My yoke. What does it mean? 00:02:33.29\00:02:35.65 There is also somebody else's yoke. 00:02:35.66\00:02:38.65 So Jesus here makes contrast--makes contrast 00:02:38.66\00:02:42.09 between the Pharisaic observance of the law, 00:02:42.10\00:02:45.80 the yoke of the Pharisees that they try to put 00:02:45.81\00:02:48.56 on the people and His own yoke 00:02:48.57\00:02:50.54 and what was the difference, Glenn? 00:02:50.55\00:02:52.42 The Pharisaic law was very heavy, oppressing yoke. 00:02:52.43\00:02:57.62 The yoke that Jesus offered, 00:02:57.63\00:02:59.10 the way how to observe the law was very light, 00:02:59.11\00:03:01.86 it was very delightful, as David said 00:03:01.87\00:03:04.09 "Your law is the light to my soul." 00:03:04.10\00:03:08.41 It's significant that He doesn't say 00:03:08.42\00:03:09.81 come just to the yoke, He says come to Me. 00:03:09.82\00:03:12.00 Come to Me. Come to Me. 00:03:12.01\00:03:13.71 And this yoke is here connected 00:03:13.72\00:03:16.33 with the word arrest. 00:03:16.34\00:03:18.97 The word arrest, it really a solution 00:03:18.98\00:03:21.26 to the Sabbath and this is exactly. 00:03:21.27\00:03:23.00 You see the problem is, when we started 00:03:23.01\00:03:25.12 the Gospel of Matthew, we always depend 00:03:25.13\00:03:29.11 on the division of the gospel in two Chapters. 00:03:29.12\00:03:31.96 Matthew never divided his gospel into Chapters. 00:03:31.97\00:03:35.06 The chapters were invented much, much later period 00:03:35.07\00:03:39.52 that are very useful to us, for our convenience. 00:03:39.53\00:03:41.68 But the problem is so many times, 00:03:41.69\00:03:43.46 we don't make connection between the previous chapter 00:03:43.47\00:03:46.27 and the chapter that follows. 00:03:46.28\00:03:48.05 Actually, this is exactly, Glenn, what do we have-- 00:03:48.06\00:03:50.59 So you're hinting, we need to see the connection-- 00:03:50.60\00:03:52.28 We've to see the connection 00:03:52.29\00:03:53.37 because this text is introduction to Chapter 12. 00:03:53.38\00:03:56.68 Let me read the end of Chapter 11. 00:03:56.69\00:03:59.13 "For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." 00:03:59.14\00:04:01.35 He has just talked about coming 00:04:01.36\00:04:02.86 and finding rest for your souls and then Chapter 12. 00:04:02.87\00:04:05.85 "At that time, Jesus went 00:04:05.86\00:04:07.03 through the grainfields on the Sabbath. 00:04:07.04\00:04:09.16 And what happened text? All right. 00:04:09.17\00:04:10.68 And his disciples were hungry, 00:04:10.69\00:04:11.99 and began to pluck grains of--heads of grain to eat. 00:04:12.00\00:04:15.46 And when the Pharisees saw it, 00:04:15.47\00:04:19.22 they said to him, look, 00:04:19.23\00:04:20.79 your disciples are doing what is not lawful 00:04:20.80\00:04:22.76 to do on the Sabbath. 00:04:22.77\00:04:24.37 But He said to them have ye not read 00:04:24.38\00:04:26.95 that David did when he was hungry, 00:04:26.96\00:04:30.34 he and those who were with him. 00:04:30.35\00:04:32.48 How they entered the House of the Lord 00:04:32.49\00:04:34.50 and ate the showbread, 00:04:34.51\00:04:35.59 which was not lawful for him to eat, 00:04:35.60\00:04:37.91 nor for those who were with him, 00:04:37.92\00:04:39.58 but only for the priests? 00:04:39.59\00:04:41.08 Or have you not read in the law, 00:04:41.09\00:04:43.72 of the Sabbath the priests in the temple 00:04:43.73\00:04:45.72 profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? 00:04:45.73\00:04:49.33 Yet I say to you, that in this place 00:04:49.34\00:04:51.58 there is one greater than the temple. 00:04:51.59\00:04:54.40 But if you'd known what this means, 00:04:54.41\00:04:56.04 I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, 00:04:56.05\00:04:58.44 you would not have condemned the guiltless. 00:04:58.45\00:05:00.18 For the Sabbath-- for the Son of Man, 00:05:00.19\00:05:03.18 this is the point, for the Son of Man 00:05:03.19\00:05:05.28 is the Lord even of the Sabbath. 00:05:05.29\00:05:07.02 Can I mention something else? 00:05:07.03\00:05:08.75 We've the next event that follows. What was that? 00:05:08.76\00:05:11.63 The same case, Jesus comes with the synagogue 00:05:11.64\00:05:14.38 and there is there a sick man 00:05:14.39\00:05:16.61 with paralyzed hand 00:05:16.62\00:05:18.04 and the same Jesus wants to heal that person 00:05:18.05\00:05:20.47 and the Pharisees, they criticize Him. 00:05:20.48\00:05:22.77 So we've this connection between rest and Sabbath. 00:05:22.78\00:05:25.06 Now, we're gonna see about His Sabbath keeping. 00:05:25.07\00:05:27.21 Yeah, so actually, these two events, 00:05:27.22\00:05:30.52 they really are follow up 00:05:31.75\00:05:34.41 on that concluding text of Revelation 11 00:05:34.42\00:05:37.26 to contrast in practical way, 00:05:37.27\00:05:39.47 the yoke, the Jesus offered to his disciples 00:05:39.48\00:05:42.96 and the yoke of the Pharisees 00:05:42.97\00:05:44.79 that was really heavy based on the rules, on details. 00:05:44.80\00:05:49.88 You know, that actually really that law became 00:05:49.89\00:05:53.23 a heavy burden to everybody 00:05:53.24\00:05:55.81 who tried to practice that law. 00:05:55.82\00:05:57.27 So the Sabbath-- the way Jesus uses Sabbath 00:05:57.28\00:06:00.74 and keeps the Sabbath is a window 00:06:00.75\00:06:02.73 which we're understanding. Now-- 00:06:02.74\00:06:03.86 You see the opening word is at that time 00:06:03.87\00:06:05.88 in the verse 11, at that time and what time? 00:06:05.89\00:06:08.32 The time when Jesus made the statement 00:06:08.33\00:06:10.58 "Take my yoke upon yourself". 00:06:10.59\00:06:12.36 At that time, this is what happened. 00:06:12.37\00:06:14.44 So, Jesus tried to teach people something. 00:06:14.45\00:06:16.14 Now it was Jesus regular practice 00:06:16.15\00:06:18.59 of preaching and healing. 00:06:18.60\00:06:20.66 We see some Sabbath healings here, 00:06:20.67\00:06:22.57 help us understand the connection. 00:06:22.58\00:06:24.28 Glenn, we've to advertise something 00:06:24.29\00:06:27.02 to emphasize something. 00:06:27.03\00:06:29.10 When people read the Gospel of Matthew, 00:06:29.11\00:06:30.68 they had the impression that Jesus tried 00:06:30.69\00:06:32.75 to do away with the law. 00:06:32.76\00:06:34.07 No, Jesus never intended that. 00:06:34.08\00:06:35.89 Remember the Sermon on the Mount, 00:06:35.90\00:06:37.07 "I did not come to abolish the law". 00:06:37.08\00:06:40.63 There is no any discussion 00:06:40.64\00:06:42.05 whether the law of God should be observed or not. 00:06:42.06\00:06:45.39 Here is what the question of the validity of the Sabbath. 00:06:45.40\00:06:48.82 Actually, Jesus tried to affirm the Sabbath. 00:06:48.83\00:06:52.75 He tried to make the Sabbath to be a delight 00:06:52.76\00:06:56.76 that holy day that people can really enjoy 00:06:56.77\00:07:00.32 and even if there are some people 00:07:00.33\00:07:02.30 who needed a special assistance, 00:07:02.31\00:07:04.43 people who needed a special help, 00:07:04.44\00:07:06.55 special healing on the Sabbath, 00:07:06.56\00:07:08.36 Jesus was willing to do it on the Sabbath, 00:07:08.37\00:07:11.88 to make that Sabbath 00:07:11.89\00:07:13.79 very memorable to those people 00:07:13.80\00:07:15.66 who had a special encounter 00:07:15.67\00:07:17.19 with Jesus Christ on that particular day. 00:07:17.20\00:07:19.01 But often times, we know that 00:07:19.02\00:07:20.41 He waited till the evening, sun down after, 00:07:20.42\00:07:23.49 but on some occasions. 00:07:23.50\00:07:25.01 So these are very intentional healings. 00:07:25.02\00:07:27.13 See we're dealing some Christians, 00:07:27.14\00:07:28.17 they said, you see Jesus tried to go 00:07:28.18\00:07:30.02 away with the Sabbath. 00:07:30.03\00:07:31.37 You see that's not the case. 00:07:31.38\00:07:32.69 But there're some people, they said, no, 00:07:32.70\00:07:34.36 but on Sabbath, we can do all kind of good works. 00:07:34.37\00:07:37.36 No, Jesus did not try to teach it. 00:07:37.37\00:07:39.74 Glenn, can you open the Gospel of Matthew? 00:07:39.75\00:07:43.26 Which is actually Chapter 8, is it verse 26? 00:07:44.70\00:07:48.50 No, 16. 00:07:48.51\00:07:49.91 Okay, 8:16? Yeah, Matthew 8:16. 00:07:49.92\00:07:52.84 Matthew 8:16. You see. 00:07:52.85\00:07:55.37 And we're finding more about what the usual practice was. 00:07:55.38\00:07:58.29 "When evening can come, they brought to him 00:07:58.30\00:08:00.50 many who were demon-possessed 00:08:00.51\00:08:02.00 and he cast out spirits with a word 00:08:02.01\00:08:03.95 and he healed all who were sick." 00:08:03.96\00:08:05.64 So what we're Finding--? 00:08:05.65\00:08:06.68 So, Jesus did not do regular healing on the Sabbath. 00:08:06.69\00:08:10.26 He did it during the week, 00:08:10.27\00:08:13.28 but Jesus always made exception, 00:08:13.29\00:08:16.22 people were the most important. 00:08:16.23\00:08:17.90 There were some special needs to restore 00:08:17.91\00:08:20.47 somebody's health or to help certain people. 00:08:20.48\00:08:22.97 Jesus did it even in the Sabbath, 00:08:22.98\00:08:24.69 but this was not his regular work that he did. 00:08:24.70\00:08:28.95 It's a marvelous thing to see God through Jesus. 00:08:30.36\00:08:34.33 Healing lives on the Sabbath day, 00:08:34.34\00:08:36.30 He just--is that compassion again? 00:08:36.31\00:08:38.27 He didn't want people suffering. 00:08:38.28\00:08:39.75 He saw people suffering and wanted to heal 00:08:39.76\00:08:42.80 and He's telling us something about following Jesus, 00:08:42.81\00:08:46.01 keeping the law, following God, 00:08:46.02\00:08:47.81 is demonstrated through His life. 00:08:47.82\00:08:48.99 Actually, this is what made now Pharisees 00:08:49.00\00:08:51.19 to be even more persistent and Jesus had to give 00:08:51.20\00:08:54.26 that warning to them, it's in verses 30 to 32. 00:08:54.27\00:08:58.89 Verse 30 and 32?
