Hi and welcome to our the Books of the Book series. 00:00:20.90\00:00:25.26 We're exploring the Gospel of Matthew. 00:00:25.27\00:00:27.98 It's a wonderful journey we've been on so far, 00:00:27.99\00:00:29.86 so glad that you could join us. 00:00:29.87\00:00:31.19 This is gonna be a great time together with our lead teacher, 00:00:31.20\00:00:34.00 Dr. Ranko Stefanovic from Andrews University. 00:00:34.01\00:00:36.49 Ranko, we've been exploring this wonderful book-- 00:00:36.50\00:00:40.91 what have you been feeling 00:00:40.92\00:00:42.31 as you've been getting into this gospel again? 00:00:42.32\00:00:44.18 What's happening in your heart 00:00:44.19\00:00:45.54 as you're studying God's word as we're sharing it together? 00:00:45.55\00:00:49.37 Is God working in your life--? 00:00:49.38\00:00:51.25 Oh, yeah, more and more that appreciation for Jesus 00:00:51.26\00:00:56.52 who He was and who is still today, 00:00:56.53\00:00:59.21 it's really increasing in my life. 00:00:59.22\00:01:01.87 We keep re-meeting ourselves. 00:01:01.88\00:01:03.39 My love for Him-- Wonderful. 00:01:03.40\00:01:04.70 Yeah, it is increasing. 00:01:04.71\00:01:05.83 Let's pray together that God will give us 00:01:05.84\00:01:07.30 the same experience in this program 00:01:07.31\00:01:08.85 as we study together. 00:01:08.86\00:01:10.57 Lord, we ask that you'll open our hearts. 00:01:10.58\00:01:12.95 We have so many distractions, so many burdens, 00:01:12.96\00:01:16.37 and we ask that they can all be set aside. 00:01:16.38\00:01:18.61 May Your spirit come in and give us peace 00:01:18.62\00:01:20.88 that we may focus only upon Jesus. 00:01:20.89\00:01:23.79 In Your name we pray. Amen. Amen. 00:01:23.80\00:01:26.66 Now, Ranko, we've been moving 00:01:26.67\00:01:28.28 through the Gospel of Matthew, 00:01:28.29\00:01:30.11 remind us what we just covered? 00:01:30.12\00:01:32.23 We were talking about the disciples 00:01:32.24\00:01:34.40 being sent out by Jesus. 00:01:34.41\00:01:35.98 Is that relevant? How is that relevant for us today? 00:01:35.99\00:01:38.17 Actually chapters 10, 11 00:01:38.18\00:01:40.80 are transitory in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:01:40.81\00:01:43.17 So far, Jesus was doing preaching, 00:01:43.18\00:01:48.12 teaching, and healing. 00:01:48.13\00:01:50.31 The disciples were just spectators, okay. 00:01:50.32\00:01:52.91 They were, they were watching. 00:01:52.92\00:01:54.74 Now they're the active participants. 00:01:54.75\00:01:57.86 Now Jesus sends them in chapter 10, 00:01:57.87\00:01:59.90 to go and to do the same 00:01:59.91\00:02:02.50 by following to the footsteps of the Messiah. 00:02:02.51\00:02:05.03 There is something interesting is, 00:02:05.04\00:02:06.90 as Jesus sends his disciples in chapter 10, 00:02:06.91\00:02:10.73 there is one point, one detail 00:02:10.74\00:02:13.31 that is very intriguing to biblical-- 00:02:13.32\00:02:17.57 to the Bible students is when you read the same account 00:02:17.58\00:02:20.83 in the Gospel of Luke, the disciples come back. 00:02:20.84\00:02:23.93 They're so happy they share the joy with Jesus. 00:02:23.94\00:02:27.24 But in Gospel of Matthew, the disciples never come back. 00:02:27.25\00:02:30.63 Of course, they came back, 00:02:30.64\00:02:31.90 but Matthew never reports that. Why? 00:02:31.91\00:02:35.36 There is a theological purpose here to tell us 00:02:35.37\00:02:38.43 the disciples are never supposed to come back. 00:02:38.44\00:02:40.87 They're supposed to continue the work of Jesus 00:02:40.88\00:02:43.23 until the very, very end 00:02:43.24\00:02:45.04 when Jesus will come again to take them to himself. 00:02:45.05\00:02:48.93 And they'll continue in this gospel 00:02:48.94\00:02:51.14 to be co-labors with Jesus. 00:02:51.15\00:02:52.69 Now you said until the end, now does that mean 00:02:52.70\00:02:55.31 that He has the same need and purpose today? 00:02:55.32\00:02:57.33 Actually, in very nice book 00:02:57.34\00:02:59.57 I'd like to encourage the viewers 00:02:59.58\00:03:01.80 to take that book and to read. 00:03:01.81\00:03:03.19 It's a fantastic book. I had it. 00:03:03.20\00:03:04.93 It's the "Ministry of Healing." 00:03:04.94\00:03:07.68 They talk us about the ministry of Jesus down to the earth 00:03:07.69\00:03:10.96 and what we're as Christians today we're supposed to do. 00:03:10.97\00:03:14.01 And there is one text, on page 143, I read it, 00:03:14.02\00:03:17.71 it says "The world needs today what it needed 1900 years ago." 00:03:17.72\00:03:23.64 The book was written, we can say 2000 years ago. 00:03:23.65\00:03:26.77 "Christ's method alone will give 00:03:26.78\00:03:29.62 true success in reaching the people. 00:03:29.63\00:03:32.76 Jesus mingled with them, desired their good, 00:03:32.77\00:03:36.56 showed sympathy for them, ministered their needs, 00:03:36.57\00:03:40.39 won their confidence, and bade them, Follow Me." 00:03:40.40\00:03:43.40 And they followed Him. 00:03:43.41\00:03:44.64 So the world needs the same thing. Yeah. 00:03:44.65\00:03:46.75 And how did Jesus do it? What was His method? 00:03:46.76\00:03:48.91 Mingling with people-- Mingling with people-- 00:03:48.92\00:03:50.64 It's important lesson for us, 00:03:50.65\00:03:52.29 because sometimes it's natural for us 00:03:52.30\00:03:54.25 to pull apart away from the sinful world. 00:03:54.26\00:03:56.77 We need to separate sin in our lives, 00:03:56.78\00:03:58.94 but not separate from other people. 00:03:58.95\00:04:00.54 Exactly. Exactly. Okay. 00:04:00.55\00:04:02.08 Now we move into Matthew Chapter 11. 00:04:02.09\00:04:05.64 What's ahead for us? 00:04:05.65\00:04:07.36 Actually, we have a lot to say here. 00:04:07.37\00:04:09.29 Unfortunately, we cannot cover all the text. 00:04:09.30\00:04:11.74 We've the beginning of chapter 11, 00:04:11.75\00:04:14.12 showing us about John Baptist. 00:04:14.13\00:04:15.77 And poor John the Baptist, 00:04:15.78\00:04:16.93 we met him in this gospel back in chapter 3. 00:04:16.94\00:04:20.23 Powerful preacher-- 00:04:20.24\00:04:21.36 Powerful preacher, everyone is responding, 00:04:21.37\00:04:23.25 but that's not where his life is now. 00:04:23.26\00:04:25.06 Yeah. He's in prison. 00:04:25.07\00:04:26.60 Actually, he's there in the prison 00:04:26.61\00:04:28.53 and evidently he is waiting for death. 00:04:28.54\00:04:33.21 To be killed. 00:04:33.22\00:04:34.41 It must've been such a discouraging experience. 00:04:34.42\00:04:37.08 What is John do about this? 00:04:37.09\00:04:38.37 He sends two of his disciples to Jesus 00:04:38.38\00:04:40.36 and they've a question. 00:04:40.37\00:04:41.58 What's the question? 00:04:41.59\00:04:43.10 You know, he's there in the prison. 00:04:43.11\00:04:44.42 Jesus is not reacting 00:04:44.43\00:04:46.39 and then he sends the message to Jesus. 00:04:46.40\00:04:49.70 Keep in mind he was the one to prepare people 00:04:49.71\00:04:52.28 for the coming of the Messiah. 00:04:52.29\00:04:53.71 Now he sends message to Jesus, 00:04:53.72\00:04:55.66 "Are You the one who was supposed to come 00:04:55.67\00:04:58.31 or are we supposed to wait for somebody else?" 00:04:58.32\00:05:01.91 Ranko, it's the same question by the way the reader has 00:05:01.92\00:05:04.47 and that we have, is Jesus the one-- 00:05:04.48\00:05:06.47 Is He the one? Yeah. All right. 00:05:06.48\00:05:09.91 So how does Jesus respond to the question? 00:05:09.92\00:05:12.68 Jesus does not argue. 00:05:12.69\00:05:14.62 Jesus does not try to present 00:05:14.63\00:05:17.55 all the evidences about His Messiah. 00:05:17.56\00:05:19.60 He just told to those messengers, 00:05:19.61\00:05:22.69 "Look around, what do you see around yourself?" 00:05:22.70\00:05:25.51 May I read that Matthew 11:5, 00:05:25.52\00:05:28.20 "The blind see, the lame walk, 00:05:28.21\00:05:29.54 the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, 00:05:29.55\00:05:31.61 the dead are raised up, 00:05:31.62\00:05:32.89 and the poor have the gospel preached to them, 00:05:32.90\00:05:35.06 and blessed is he who is not offended because of me." 00:05:35.07\00:05:39.32 Glenn, I grew up in an atheistic society. 00:05:39.33\00:05:43.03 When people always talk to us 00:05:43.04\00:05:45.40 and asking evidences for existence of God, etc., 00:05:45.41\00:05:49.39 and I learned something from these cases. 00:05:49.40\00:05:52.52 Let's leave the evidence. 00:05:52.53\00:05:54.07 The evidence is that God provide to us. 00:05:54.08\00:05:56.25 We're not able to defend God. 00:05:56.26\00:05:59.98 God provided so many things to defend himself. 00:05:59.99\00:06:03.22 We simply have to point 00:06:03.23\00:06:04.98 the eyes of the people to those evidences. 00:06:04.99\00:06:07.67 And evidently John accepted it and he died in peace. 00:06:07.68\00:06:11.56 Now, Ranko, that's an important point 00:06:11.57\00:06:13.49 because not always does following God 00:06:13.50\00:06:17.28 lead to prosperity and success. 00:06:17.29\00:06:20.02 No. No. John's life is a great lesson for us. 00:06:20.03\00:06:23.36 That some of God's saints are gonna suffer. 00:06:23.37\00:06:26.32 Yeah and I would like to tell something to the viewers. 00:06:26.33\00:06:30.82 To be discouraged in this life, it's human, it's normal, 00:06:30.83\00:06:37.60 and so many times we're discouraged, 00:06:37.61\00:06:39.45 we're oppressed, and our spirit is put down. 00:06:39.46\00:06:42.71 We wonder, you know, if he sin-- 00:06:42.72\00:06:44.40 have sinned against God. 00:06:44.41\00:06:45.73 Just keep in mind 00:06:45.74\00:06:47.07 even one of the greatest prophets in history, 00:06:47.08\00:06:49.74 Jesus called John the Baptist, 00:06:49.75\00:06:51.71 the greatest prophet ever born by woman. 00:06:51.72\00:06:55.52 Actually, he could be discouraged, that's a human. 00:06:55.53\00:06:58.77 But praise God that we have a loving Father in heaven, 00:06:58.78\00:07:03.25 who understands our needs. 00:07:03.26\00:07:04.71 That's why Jesus became flesh. 00:07:04.72\00:07:06.63 He took our human nature in order to understand us. 00:07:06.64\00:07:09.91 That's our hope. That's our hope. 00:07:09.92\00:07:11.73 The compassionate savior gives John what he needs to know 00:07:11.74\00:07:15.42 and that's the evidence of who Jesus is. 00:07:15.43\00:07:17.54 Yes, yes. All right, we see His compassion 00:07:17.55\00:07:20.05 as we go through this 11th chapter, 00:07:20.06\00:07:22.27 especially as we get toward the end of the chapter, Ranko. 00:07:22.28\00:07:25.09 Yes. We come to this quotation that we often hear. 00:07:25.10\00:07:29.94 You know, it's often refer to-- 00:07:29.95\00:07:32.10 Maybe we could read a little bit 00:07:32.11\00:07:33.69 from the end of chapter 11. 00:07:33.70\00:07:35.76 I'll start with verse 25. 00:07:35.77\00:07:37.29 At that time, Jesus answered and said, 00:07:37.30\00:07:39.30 "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, 00:07:39.31\00:07:41.74 that you have hidden these things from the wise 00:07:41.75\00:07:43.62 and the prudent and revealed them to babes. 00:07:43.63\00:07:45.27 Even so, Father, for it seemed good in your sight. 00:07:45.28\00:07:48.48 All things have been delivered to me by my Father 00:07:48.49\00:07:50.94 and no one knows the Son except his Father." 00:07:50.95\00:07:53.30 What a wonderful communication 00:07:53.31\00:07:54.97 we see between the two of them. 00:07:54.98\00:07:56.36 "And then nor does anyone know the Father except the Son." 00:07:56.37\00:08:00.14 Great Christological statement there, 00:08:00.15\00:08:01.80 "And the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him." 00:08:01.81\00:08:04.59 Now the statement-- 00:08:04.60\00:08:06.45 Can you stop here at this point? All right. 00:08:06.46\00:08:09.16 Actually, this text is the conclusion of this chapter 00:08:09.17\00:08:12.64 and there are many texts that are very similar to that. 00:08:12.65\00:08:16.22 Usually, we do not make connection 00:08:16.23\00:08:17.96 between these two texts. 00:08:17.97\00:08:19.12 I would like-- Please allow me, 00:08:19.13\00:08:20.33 I would like you can read also verse 12 00:08:20.34\00:08:22.33 in connection with this. 00:08:22.34\00:08:23.33 Okay, verse 12. Yes. 00:08:23.34\00:08:25.61 And now--"And from the days of John the Baptist until now, 00:08:25.62\00:08:29.94 the Kingdom of Heaven suffers violence 00:08:29.95\00:08:32.82 and the violent take it by force. 00:08:32.83\00:08:35.57 So violent people one day will be in the Kingdom of God. 00:08:35.58\00:08:38.84 See Jesus is using here a metaphor. 00:08:38.85\00:08:41.89 Prior to John the Baptist, 00:08:41.90\00:08:43.99 God's people were confined to one nation. 00:08:44.00\00:08:46.40 You were born in that nation. 00:08:46.41\00:08:47.98 You have to bear witness to those 00:08:47.99\00:08:49.60 who are non-Israelites, who responds. 00:08:49.61\00:08:51.99 But for the time of John the Baptist, 00:08:52.00\00:08:54.27 as the gospel is being preached, 00:08:54.28\00:08:56.61 there's a position. 00:08:56.62\00:08:58.37 It's not easy to be Christian. 00:08:58.38\00:09:00.49 It's not easy to be the follower of Jesus. 00:09:00.50\00:09:03.18 Only people, you see by force 00:09:03.19\00:09:05.33 people who are struggling, who are fighting 00:09:05.34\00:09:07.81 before God for the gospel, 00:09:07.82\00:09:09.55 for the salvation, only those people 00:09:09.56\00:09:11.91 who are really making that great effort, 00:09:11.92\00:09:14.00 the desire of that gospel will hold their heart, 00:09:14.01\00:09:16.90 the gospel is available to them and they deserve it. 00:09:16.91\00:09:20.36 So there is something in this life, 00:09:20.37\00:09:23.90 there is somebody who thrive to prevent us 00:09:23.91\00:09:26.55 from the Gospel of Christ. 00:09:26.56\00:09:28.46 But we've all power given to us by God, 00:09:28.47\00:09:31.73 we've to struggle, we've to fight for that gospel. 00:09:31.74\00:09:34.48 And there's a bit of melancholy sadness 00:09:34.49\00:09:37.63 that is coming through as Jesus is seeing 00:09:37.64\00:09:40.37 the response of the people He is trying to reach. 00:09:40.38\00:09:42.67 And I think everyone who tries to share the gospel 00:09:42.68\00:09:45.01 you sense when people aren't responding, 00:09:45.02\00:09:46.59 it's a sad thing and he describes these, 00:09:46.60\00:09:48.53 "We played the flute for you and you didn't dance. 00:09:48.54\00:09:51.47 We mourned to you, you wouldn't lament." 00:09:51.48\00:09:53.39 Whatever He tries to do, there is a resistance. 00:09:53.40\00:09:56.13 There is a sadness that will increase 00:09:56.14\00:09:58.19 as we move towards the cross, 00:09:58.20\00:09:59.55 as His heart begins to break over His people. 00:09:59.56\00:10:02.78 And then Jesus makes the conclusion is, 00:10:02.79\00:10:06.09 that gospel unfortunately so many times 00:10:06.10\00:10:08.48 is not accepted by the wisest people in this world. 00:10:08.49\00:10:11.31 People who are so much intelligent 00:10:11.32\00:10:13.27 usually they see the gospel as foolishness. 00:10:13.28\00:10:16.08 When we read the writings of Apostle Paul, 00:10:16.09\00:10:18.33 First Corinthians Chapter 1, he says, 00:10:18.34\00:10:21.34 "The wise people they look for wisdom, 00:10:21.35\00:10:23.60 some other people look for science, 00:10:23.61\00:10:25.93 but the cross of Christ is actually the power of God, 00:10:25.94\00:10:29.21 that changes human lives." 00:10:29.22\00:10:31.11 And actually Jesus made very, very clear 00:10:31.12\00:10:34.24 that the gospel is given to those who accepted. 00:10:34.25\00:10:36.77 Not because what they have intelligent that they possess? 00:10:36.78\00:10:41.24 It's really their willingness 00:10:41.25\00:10:43.27 to respond to the gospel message. 00:10:43.28\00:10:45.46 And He gives us wonderful invitation that we see, 00:10:45.47\00:10:49.31 we often hear, Ranko verses 28 and 29 quoted and-- 00:10:49.32\00:10:55.15 And 30. And 30, yes. 00:10:55.16\00:10:57.01 And there is certainly a wonderful comfort here. 00:10:57.02\00:11:00.69 But could you take us a little deeper, 00:11:00.70\00:11:02.48 may I read the text first and then help us 00:11:02.49\00:11:05.36 understand what it means? 00:11:05.37\00:11:06.53 "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, 00:11:06.54\00:11:09.08 and I will give you rest." 00:11:09.09\00:11:10.37 One of the most beautiful promises in scripture. 00:11:10.38\00:11:13.18 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, 00:11:13.19\00:11:16.01 for I'm gentle and lowly in heart, 00:11:16.02\00:11:18.41 and you will find rest for your souls. 00:11:18.42\00:11:20.60 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." 00:11:20.61\00:11:23.78 We should notice a few things, 00:11:23.79\00:11:24.93 there are few words that are keywords here. 00:11:24.94\00:11:27.81 Glenn, can I--I cannot read this text, 00:11:27.82\00:11:30.50 but to--but want to mention something is, 00:11:30.51\00:11:32.53 what was Jesus occupation 00:11:32.54\00:11:34.99 during His first 30 years of His life? 00:11:35.00\00:11:38.49 He's a carpenter. He's a carpenter. 00:11:38.50\00:11:40.43 Carpentry was not what carpenter is today. 00:11:40.44\00:11:43.42 People doing all kind of work, man. 00:11:43.43\00:11:45.25 You know, there were artists making even-- 00:11:45.26\00:11:48.25 making even bridges, building houses, construction. 00:11:48.26\00:11:51.55 But if you are in Galilee, 00:11:51.56\00:11:53.74 they are living among farmers. 00:11:53.75\00:11:56.35 One of part of your business is to make yokes for oxes. 00:11:56.36\00:12:01.58 So evidently, Jesus actually made many yokes. 00:12:01.59\00:12:05.63 So He is using something from His personal experience here 00:12:05.64\00:12:09.83 to address the needs of the people. 00:12:09.84\00:12:12.06 You know, when I was a boy, 00:12:12.07\00:12:14.45 I would go to village visit farmers, etc., 00:12:14.46\00:12:17.51 and I saw when they were trying 00:12:17.52\00:12:18.98 to buy a yoke for their oxes, 00:12:18.99\00:12:21.54 they were looking if yoke was very heavy or light. 00:12:21.55\00:12:25.21 The lighter yoke is more efficient is 00:12:25.22\00:12:28.59 for those oxes to perform the job 00:12:28.60\00:12:30.98 that you want to do, to do with them. 00:12:30.99\00:12:33.43 Actually, there is one scholar, 00:12:33.44\00:12:34.65 they said, can we imagine Jesus there in Nazareth, 00:12:34.66\00:12:37.29 having his shop and selling the yokes 00:12:37.30\00:12:40.68 and in the window of His shop, 00:12:40.69\00:12:42.48 He has--it says, "My yokes are very light." 00:12:42.49\00:12:46.72 And we should remember then that the yoke 00:12:46.73\00:12:49.66 has something to do with labor, 00:12:49.67\00:12:51.40 with effort, with work, but this would resonated 00:12:51.41\00:12:54.58 among the Jewish people. 00:12:54.59\00:12:56.06 What was their understanding of yoke? 00:12:56.07\00:12:57.80 Give us some metaphor, what it is about? 00:12:57.81\00:12:59.17 Actually, what is another word that is here 00:12:59.18\00:13:01.35 related to the word of yoke? 00:13:01.36\00:13:03.27 It's verse 28, I'll give you rest. 00:13:03.28\00:13:07.67 Then let's go to verse 29. 00:13:07.68\00:13:10.08 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, 00:13:10.09\00:13:13.09 for I am gentle and humble in heart, 00:13:13.10\00:13:15.38 and you will find yoke and the rest." 00:13:15.39\00:13:19.08 If we go to the Bible, the word the rest 00:13:19.09\00:13:21.82 is always related to something 00:13:21.83\00:13:23.71 and for the first time that word is used 00:13:23.72\00:13:25.74 in Genesis Chapter 2. 00:13:25.75\00:13:28.50 In order to understanding meaning of this word, yoke, 00:13:28.51\00:13:31.45 we really have first to go 00:13:31.46\00:13:33.70 to the Jewish mindset of the time. 00:13:33.71\00:13:36.27 The Jewish writings indicates 00:13:36.28\00:13:38.06 that the Jews of the time of Jesus, 00:13:38.07\00:13:40.22 they use the word yoke 00:13:40.23\00:13:43.09 for the perseverance of the law of God. 00:13:43.10\00:13:45.60 When you observe the law of God, 00:13:45.61\00:13:47.33 you put your head into the yoke 00:13:47.34\00:13:49.72 of the Torah to perform 00:13:49.73\00:13:52.52 and to do all those things there in the Torah. 00:13:52.53\00:13:55.92 By the way, this concept is used 00:13:55.93\00:13:59.26 in the New Testament to explain the forsake 00:13:59.27\00:14:02.64 concept of the observance of the law and very soon, 00:14:02.65\00:14:06.07 we will come to that concept to explain-- 00:14:06.08\00:14:08.04 So you're saying that we've an instrument here, 00:14:08.05\00:14:11.76 there was a metaphor 00:14:11.77\00:14:12.76 for the Jewish understanding how to live? 00:14:12.77\00:14:14.57 How to observe--As the follower of God, 00:14:14.58\00:14:16.43 I should put myself into the yoke of keeping the law. 00:14:16.44\00:14:20.13 Of keeping the law. Well, is the law can be burned? 00:14:20.14\00:14:22.65 Is it troublesome and so forth? 00:14:22.66\00:14:24.31 Yes. We'll come to that in a few moments. 00:14:24.32\00:14:27.52 All right. We're gonna take a break right now. 00:14:27.53\00:14:29.62 I want to hear a little bit more about that yoke. 00:14:29.63\00:14:31.31 I'm sure you do too. 00:14:31.32\00:14:32.31 We'll be right back after a break. 00:14:32.32\00:14:33.90
