Amen. 00:01:22.59\00:01:24.95 Well, Ranko, we've been moving through this Gospel of Matthew, 00:01:26.01\00:01:29.45 authored by God, written by Matthew 00:01:29.46\00:01:32.11 under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. 00:01:32.12\00:01:33.91 We've worked our way through the first few chapters, 00:01:33.92\00:01:36.64 all the way up through the Sermon on the Mount, 00:01:36.65\00:01:38.49 that's where we finished last time. 00:01:38.50\00:01:41.27 We had a chance to see Jesus 00:01:41.28\00:01:42.72 as the greatest teacher of all time. Yes. 00:01:42.73\00:01:45.14 The depth of His teachings, 00:01:45.15\00:01:46.74 the insights that He provided, powerful. 00:01:46.75\00:01:49.34 But now we're moving into Chapter 8. 00:01:49.35\00:01:51.00 What's ahead for us? 00:01:51.01\00:01:52.16 Yes, we saw already in Chapter 4, 00:01:52.17\00:01:57.47 that the Gospel indicates that the activities of Jesus 00:01:57.48\00:02:01.91 were made of His teachings. Yes. 00:02:01.92\00:02:04.50 And preachings, and then His healing 00:02:04.51\00:02:07.38 and other activities helping people. 00:02:07.39\00:02:11.12 In the last two programs, 00:02:11.13\00:02:13.09 we saw the first of the set of the teachings of Jesus, 00:02:13.10\00:02:17.13 the Sermon on the Mount. Right. 00:02:17.14\00:02:19.26 So, now after that, after that same formula 00:02:19.27\00:02:21.93 when Jesus finished all His sayings. 00:02:21.94\00:02:25.50 Now we have Jesus putting His teachings into practice. 00:02:25.51\00:02:29.90 So, we have Chapters 8 and 9, 00:02:29.91\00:02:32.31 where we see the healing and other activities of Jesus. 00:02:32.32\00:02:35.48 Let's be sure we didn't miss that, 00:02:35.49\00:02:36.82 putting His teachings into practice. 00:02:36.83\00:02:38.60 So, there's a close connection. Close connection between that. 00:02:38.61\00:02:40.56 Through His teachings and the activities. 00:02:40.57\00:02:42.29 So, give us an idea of the activities 00:02:42.30\00:02:44.25 that we find here in Chapter 8 and 9. 00:02:44.26\00:02:46.72 Yes, Chapter 8 and 9, 00:02:46.73\00:02:49.05 has very nice structure and very nice conclusion 00:02:49.06\00:02:51.79 that we will come in few moments there, 00:02:51.80\00:02:54.16 but it's organized nicely. 00:02:54.17\00:02:55.60 So, this section is about 00:02:55.61\00:02:57.33 the practical aspect of Jesus' Ministry, 00:02:57.34\00:03:00.01 but it's organized in very nice way. 00:03:00.02\00:03:02.32 And it goes in this way 00:03:02.33\00:03:03.50 "There is a miracle that Jesus does, 00:03:03.51\00:03:05.54 healing and then instructions about the discipleship, 00:03:05.55\00:03:10.84 then miracles of Jesus, then discipleship 00:03:10.85\00:03:13.59 and it goes on through all these Chapters. 00:03:13.60\00:03:15.95 This very significant in the light 00:03:17.36\00:03:19.05 would comes after Chapter 9 00:03:19.06\00:03:20.85 and we will see the concluding text of Chapter 9 00:03:20.86\00:03:23.22 is now Jesus sends His disciples. 00:03:23.23\00:03:25.85 So, whenever Jesus did some healings, 00:03:25.86\00:03:28.55 He wanted somehow to set an example to His disciples 00:03:28.56\00:03:33.27 what they're supposed to do, 00:03:33.28\00:03:34.88 to continue actually His ministry here-- 00:03:34.89\00:03:38.35 So, it's practical training in fact- 00:03:38.36\00:03:39.80 Very practical training, yes. All right, very good. 00:03:39.81\00:03:42.21 Is there a portion of script, 00:03:42.22\00:03:43.42 you would like us to read as we get started? 00:03:43.43\00:03:46.41 Actually Glenn, I would really like to start 00:03:46.42\00:03:49.16 with the concluding text of these two Chapters. Okay. 00:03:49.17\00:03:54.92 And we will come to this text again, 00:03:54.93\00:03:56.74 you know, to make connection with Chapter 10. 00:03:56.75\00:03:59.92 But our verses from 35 to 40 of Chapter 9. 00:03:59.93\00:04:04.30 All right Matthew 9:35 and following. Yes. 00:04:04.31\00:04:06.91 "Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, 00:04:06.92\00:04:09.76 teaching in their synagogues, 00:04:09.77\00:04:11.36 preaching the gospel of the kingdom, 00:04:11.37\00:04:13.51 and healing every sickness 00:04:13.52\00:04:15.67 and every disease among the people. 00:04:15.68\00:04:18.67 But when he saw the multitudes, 00:04:18.68\00:04:20.72 he was moved with compassion for them, 00:04:20.73\00:04:23.60 because they were weary and scattered like sheep 00:04:23.61\00:04:26.42 having no shepherd. 00:04:26.43\00:04:28.05 Then he said to his disciples, 00:04:28.06\00:04:30.02 "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 00:04:30.03\00:04:33.70 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest, 00:04:33.71\00:04:35.72 to send out labors into the harvest". 00:04:35.73\00:04:38.15 We saw earlier in Chapter 4:23 that Jesus 00:04:39.61\00:04:45.00 was going all around Galilee there and healing people. 00:04:45.01\00:04:48.09 And now 35, He is actually, 00:04:48.10\00:04:50.12 almost word by word repetition of this text, 00:04:50.13\00:04:53.45 which indicates that Chapter 4:23 00:04:53.46\00:04:57.30 and Chapter 9:29 they function as an envelope, 00:04:57.31\00:05:01.36 what we say inclusio. Okay. 00:05:01.37\00:05:04.64 The beginning and the conclusion is the same, 00:05:04.65\00:05:07.41 what comes between it's really, can we say a case study. 00:05:07.42\00:05:12.53 It's a practical application of this 00:05:12.54\00:05:15.55 that Jesus was going around teaching 00:05:15.56\00:05:17.87 and preaching and now healing there. 00:05:17.88\00:05:20.68 But they're like us as we-- we are not able 00:05:20.69\00:05:23.53 in these two Chapters to go through 00:05:23.54\00:05:26.72 all these healings activities of Jesus. 00:05:26.73\00:05:28.91 I believe that the viewers will do it for themselves. 00:05:28.92\00:05:32.47 But I would like to take few minutes 00:05:32.48\00:05:34.85 really to focus here on verse 36. 00:05:34.86\00:05:38.11 It sets the tone, it provides the framework 00:05:38.12\00:05:41.38 for everything that Jesus was doing. 00:05:41.39\00:05:43.49 It says "Seeing the people, He, Jesus felt compassion for them, 00:05:43.50\00:05:50.03 compassion for them, because they were distressed 00:05:50.04\00:05:53.56 and dispirited like sheep without the shepherds". 00:05:53.57\00:05:58.72 When Jesus did all those healing activities and helping people, 00:05:58.73\00:06:05.19 there was only one motive that moved Jesus to do it 00:06:05.20\00:06:09.74 and what was that? It was compassion. Compassion. 00:06:09.75\00:06:12.20 Now this word compassion we think of-- 00:06:12.21\00:06:14.15 we can break it down say compassions 00:06:14.16\00:06:16.01 literally a passion for someone else. 00:06:16.02\00:06:18.92 Help us understand the background of that word. 00:06:18.93\00:06:20.69 I see so many times even preachers, 00:06:20.70\00:06:22.71 when they preach about, about these text, 00:06:22.72\00:06:24.73 when they use the word compassion, 00:06:24.74\00:06:26.75 and the way how they refer to that, it's usually like pity. 00:06:26.76\00:06:30.75 But if we go to original languages, 00:06:31.82\00:06:34.49 the Greek word is prugismi, it's not really about pity. 00:06:34.50\00:06:40.71 If we want to translate that word in a literal way, 00:06:40.72\00:06:42.90 it means lets, can you translate 00:06:42.91\00:06:45.54 these text literally said "seeing people". 00:06:45.55\00:06:49.39 The inner organs of Jesus 00:06:50.83\00:06:53.53 they were moved, the inner organ. 00:06:53.54\00:06:57.60 You know in ancient times inner organs, 00:06:57.61\00:07:01.37 they played significant role in human lives, 00:07:01.38\00:07:04.15 that's ancient concept. 00:07:04.16\00:07:05.68 See we are so much Greek minded. 00:07:05.69\00:07:07.77 We use our mind everything. Yeah. 00:07:07.78\00:07:10.25 When we love, when we make a decision, 00:07:10.26\00:07:12.84 when decisions, when we, whatever we do, 00:07:12.85\00:07:15.45 it's always focus on our mind. 00:07:15.46\00:07:17.54 But if you go to the Bible, people think by their hearts, 00:07:17.55\00:07:22.45 people know by their hearts. 00:07:22.46\00:07:24.24 Whatever people do it's with their heart, 00:07:24.25\00:07:26.53 so inner organs were really the focus 00:07:26.54\00:07:30.91 of the entire human personality. 00:07:30.92\00:07:34.49 You know, we have something from the practical human life, 00:07:34.50\00:07:38.88 that, that we have practical indication 00:07:38.89\00:07:41.62 what it means organs to be moved. 00:07:41.63\00:07:43.88 You're telling us sensitive nurturing, caring aspect. 00:07:43.89\00:07:47.76 So, its mother, mother child. 00:07:47.77\00:07:49.59 You know, you know when you have a mother 00:07:49.60\00:07:51.44 something happens to the child, what happens? 00:07:51.45\00:07:53.28 The pain that she feels it's not here, 00:07:53.29\00:07:55.80 the pain is inside. 00:07:55.81\00:07:57.38 You feel like your inner organs are moved. Yes, yes. 00:07:57.39\00:08:01.57 Actually this is exactly what happened here 00:08:01.58\00:08:04.75 with reference to Jesus. 00:08:04.76\00:08:06.03 When Jesus saw the people, when He saw their needs, 00:08:06.04\00:08:10.09 with so many sick people, so many, 00:08:10.10\00:08:12.05 Remember another occasion people are hungry. 00:08:12.06\00:08:14.60 People are oppressed with those heavy taxes, 00:08:14.61\00:08:16.80 when Jesus saw, but much more. 00:08:16.81\00:08:19.00 People are oppressed by that burden of sin. 00:08:19.01\00:08:23.36 When Jesus saw them, 00:08:23.37\00:08:24.96 the Bible says His inner organs were moved. 00:08:24.97\00:08:29.14 And Jesus decided to help them, 00:08:29.15\00:08:30.70 well, what kind of a Savior 00:08:30.71\00:08:33.12 we have here in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:08:33.13\00:08:35.55 And this is exactly what I was thinking, 00:08:35.56\00:08:37.41 you know, we may feel like 00:08:37.42\00:08:38.71 we are suffering, we are struggling. 00:08:38.72\00:08:41.11 Jesus senses that compassion, He reaches out to us, 00:08:41.12\00:08:44.33 He feels our pain. 00:08:44.34\00:08:46.29 We say that so quickly, but it's a powerful promise. 00:08:46.30\00:08:49.79 You know, I'm asking myself a question, 00:08:49.80\00:08:53.17 you know, the early Christians 00:08:53.18\00:08:54.39 the New Testament was not composed yet. 00:08:54.40\00:08:57.27 Evidently Christians in Antioch of Syria, 00:08:57.28\00:09:00.27 they were the primary audience of that, of that Gospel. 00:09:01.45\00:09:04.33 You know, the only picture of Jesus they had 00:09:04.34\00:09:07.07 was the portrayal of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:09:07.08\00:09:11.69 What kind of Jesus they could understand and believe in. 00:09:11.70\00:09:16.86 Jesus who cared for their personal needs. 00:09:16.87\00:09:21.25 I think I mentioned this to you before, 00:09:22.72\00:09:24.97 I like to mention to the viewers. 00:09:24.98\00:09:26.59 When I was a young pastor, 00:09:26.60\00:09:28.44 I was very nervous to stand 00:09:28.45\00:09:30.55 in front of people and to preach. 00:09:30.56\00:09:32.93 I mean, this was for me a terrible thing, 00:09:32.94\00:09:34.52 that's a reason I didn't want to go to pastoral ministry. 00:09:34.53\00:09:37.14 And then there was one elderly pastor, 00:09:37.15\00:09:39.11 he tried to encourage me. 00:09:39.12\00:09:40.63 He said "Ranko, why are you nervous?" 00:09:40.64\00:09:43.47 I said, "Are you nervous?" 00:09:43.48\00:09:44.47 No, I'm never, never nervous, I said how is that so. 00:09:44.48\00:09:47.21 He said, when I stand in front of people, 00:09:47.22\00:09:49.05 when I want to serve them and to preach them, 00:09:49.06\00:09:51.31 I just imagine that I have pumpkins in front of myself. 00:09:51.32\00:09:54.38 Pumpkins? Pumpkins. 00:09:54.39\00:09:56.05 Their heads like pumpkins. 00:09:56.06\00:09:57.50 So then I reacted, you know, I was young pastor to talk 00:09:57.51\00:10:00.85 and I say boy what kind of sermon 00:10:00.86\00:10:04.13 did you preach to those pumpkins. 00:10:04.14\00:10:06.98 You see if you really want to reach 00:10:06.99\00:10:09.32 the heart of the people, they are not pumpkins. 00:10:09.33\00:10:13.04 They are living beings, that they are humans 00:10:13.05\00:10:15.29 who have their particular needs. 00:10:15.30\00:10:17.36 When Jesus saw those people, He don't see pumpkins, 00:10:17.37\00:10:19.89 He saw human needs with particular needs. 00:10:19.90\00:10:22.21 And His inner organs were moved in order to help them. 00:10:22.22\00:10:25.42 It's a beautiful picture of the caring Savior, 00:10:25.43\00:10:27.57 who senses the pain of this world 00:10:27.58\00:10:30.54 and He's the same Lord and Savior today. 00:10:30.55\00:10:32.69 He continues to respond to the needs of people in this world. 00:10:32.70\00:10:37.14 Now it talks about them being like sheep without a shepherd, 00:10:37.15\00:10:40.14 weary and scattered. Yes. 00:10:40.15\00:10:42.14 Instead of going now to all these activities of Jesus, 00:10:43.51\00:10:47.71 I would like just to focus Glenn, to one particular, 00:10:47.72\00:10:51.00 it's representative case for all other healing activities 00:10:51.01\00:10:54.21 is Chapter 9 verses 1 to 8 00:10:54.22\00:10:56.29 and I would appreciate if you, if you read these verses. 00:10:56.30\00:10:58.81 So we're looking at several, 00:10:58.82\00:11:00.34 we've looked at several miracles. 00:11:00.35\00:11:03.27 Let's take a sample now. 00:11:04.35\00:11:05.40 But this one, this one is representative. Okay. 00:11:05.41\00:11:07.95 "So He got into a boat and crossed over, 00:11:08.90\00:11:10.95 and came to His own city. 00:11:10.96\00:11:13.58 Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. 00:11:13.59\00:11:16.20 When Jesus saw their faith, 00:11:16.21\00:11:19.10 He said to the paralytic, "Son, be of good cheer, 00:11:19.11\00:11:22.20 your sins are forgiven you." 00:11:22.21\00:11:23.90 And at once some of the scribes within themselves said, 00:11:23.91\00:11:27.46 "This Man blasphemes!" 00:11:27.47\00:11:29.15 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, 00:11:29.16\00:11:31.75 "Why do you think evil in your hearts? 00:11:31.76\00:11:33.69 For which is easier, to say Your sins are forgiven you,' 00:11:33.70\00:11:36.53 or to say, 'Arise and walk'? 00:11:36.54\00:11:39.85 But that you may know that the Son of God 00:11:39.86\00:11:41.42 has power on earth to forgive sins." 00:11:41.43\00:11:44.23 Then He said to the paralytic, 00:11:44.24\00:11:45.91 "Arise, take up your bed, and go to your home." 00:11:45.92\00:11:49.09 And he arose and departed to his house. 00:11:49.10\00:11:51.37 And when the multitudes saw 00:11:51.38\00:11:52.59 they marveled and glorified God, 00:11:52.60\00:11:55.37 who had given such power to men." 00:11:55.38\00:11:57.50 Okay, so what do we have here? 00:11:57.51\00:11:59.33 There is a sick person, paralytic. 00:11:59.34\00:12:01.82 What did he need? He need a heeling. Not all. 00:12:01.83\00:12:05.38 Physical healing that's and much more. 00:12:05.39\00:12:08.62 That's what he needed. 00:12:08.63\00:12:09.67 But can you imagine instead of telling 00:12:09.68\00:12:12.46 the person get up and be healed, Jesus tells him 00:12:12.47\00:12:16.93 "Your sins are forgiven". 00:12:16.94\00:12:20.22 And that's what provoked their action of the Pharisees. 00:12:20.23\00:12:23.53 This is a representative case for all other healings. 00:12:23.54\00:12:26.77 You know, the normal word 00:12:26.78\00:12:28.58 for healing in Greek is "Therapeo". 00:12:28.59\00:12:31.52 That is used therapy, use in medicine. 00:12:33.56\00:12:36.15 But there is another word which is actually the keyword 00:12:36.16\00:12:39.50 in the Gospel for the healing activities of Jesus, 00:12:39.51\00:12:42.27 and that's the Greek word "sozo". Sozo. 00:12:42.28\00:12:45.05 Sozo can be translated into English in two different ways. 00:12:45.06\00:12:48.72 It can be translated as save, to save, 00:12:48.73\00:12:52.56 or can be translated as to heal. 00:12:52.57\00:12:54.91 So, so many times when you, 00:12:56.42\00:12:57.94 when the word is used in the Gospels, 00:12:57.95\00:12:59.95 you don't know which word to translate. 00:12:59.96\00:13:02.21 So, which concept is correct? 00:13:04.10\00:13:06.36 This case indicates that actually 00:13:06.37\00:13:08.84 the word has both meanings in-- the two meanings 00:13:08.85\00:13:12.92 in the healing activities of Jesus. 00:13:12.93\00:13:15.34 When Jesus healed people physically, 00:13:15.35\00:13:19.28 He also healed them spiritually. 00:13:19.29\00:13:22.88 When people are forgiven, they were healed. 00:13:22.89\00:13:26.92 When people were healed, they were at the same time forgiven. 00:13:26.93\00:13:31.80 There is a close relationship in the Bible 00:13:31.81\00:13:35.50 between physical and spiritual. 00:13:35.51\00:13:38.08 And that's the holistic view- That's the holistic view of- 00:13:38.09\00:13:40.68 So, Jesus with His compassion, 00:13:40.69\00:13:42.58 this compassion is not just for their physical condition. 00:13:42.59\00:13:45.79 He cares about this man's 00:13:45.80\00:13:47.53 and, of course, when He says that they could, 00:13:47.54\00:13:50.22 that he should be healed, 00:13:50.23\00:13:51.47 it raises the issue of Jesus identity. 00:13:51.48\00:13:53.58 What right does He have to-- 00:13:53.59\00:13:54.81 Glenn, just to take few moments. Okay. 00:13:54.82\00:13:56.82 Before we, we make a break. 00:13:56.83\00:13:59.27 What is the event that follows this healing of Jesus, 00:13:59.28\00:14:03.31 it's the calling of Matthew. Matthew. 00:14:03.32\00:14:05.69 Matthew was a tax collector there, 00:14:05.70\00:14:07.50 cheating on people, stealing money from people. 00:14:07.51\00:14:10.41 He did not have a problem with physical health. 00:14:10.42\00:14:15.40 But Jesus comes gives him a call, 00:14:15.41\00:14:17.56 that person had remorse, 00:14:17.57\00:14:19.03 that person has spiritual struggle. 00:14:19.04\00:14:21.37 And then Jesus calls him, follow me, 00:14:21.38\00:14:24.32 that person needed spiritual healing 00:14:24.33\00:14:28.24 "sozo" the word is applied. 00:14:28.25\00:14:30.16 You see after the spiritual healing 00:14:30.17\00:14:32.05 and his sins are forgiven. 00:14:32.06\00:14:33.75 Finally he had also the physical healing 00:14:33.76\00:14:36.11 that impacted his entire life. 00:14:36.12\00:14:38.43 Oh, good, this is a wonderful view of a compassionate Savior. 00:14:38.44\00:14:41.22 We're gonna come right back for more right after our break. 00:14:41.23\00:14:44.26
