We're back in the Gospel of Matthew, 00:00:01.01\00:00:02.27 exploring the meaning of Matthew 5:48. 00:00:02.28\00:00:05.20 Ranko Stefanovic, help us to understand 00:00:05.21\00:00:06.99 a little bit more of the context leading up to this verse. 00:00:07.00\00:00:10.32 So we saw that Jesus is dealing here with popular concept, 00:00:10.33\00:00:15.32 what is right and what is not right. 00:00:15.33\00:00:17.65 And He mentions that the followers, 00:00:17.66\00:00:19.71 His followers, the citizens of the kingdom, 00:00:19.72\00:00:22.37 they don't behave according to the popular concept of morality. 00:00:22.38\00:00:27.79 Their relationship with God, 00:00:27.80\00:00:29.85 the right living is defined by God's standards. 00:00:29.86\00:00:33.69 And now Jesus comes to the last synthesis. 00:00:33.70\00:00:37.11 Glenn, Let's go to verse 48, what He said. 00:00:37.12\00:00:40.07 He said-- Verse 48. All right. 00:00:40.08\00:00:41.49 48, he says, "Therefore you are to be perfect 00:00:41.50\00:00:46.37 as your Heavenly Father is perfect." 00:00:46.38\00:00:50.34 You ask about this text. 00:00:50.35\00:00:51.77 Glenn, what is probably the keyword here in this text? 00:00:51.78\00:00:55.88 Well, the first word "Therefore." 00:00:55.89\00:00:57.39 "Therefore." What does it mean "Therefore?" 00:00:57.40\00:00:59.07 Now many people say the keyword is perfect. 00:00:59.08\00:01:01.38 Glenn, you please very often. 00:01:01.39\00:01:02.90 Can you stand there on the pulpit and begin sermon, 00:01:02.91\00:01:05.34 and you begin sermon "Therefore"? 00:01:05.35\00:01:08.30 We would have no context. 00:01:08.31\00:01:09.35 There's no context, "Therefore" always comes 00:01:09.36\00:01:11.73 after something that was said before and you build it. 00:01:11.74\00:01:14.80 Actually another word for "Therefore", 00:01:14.81\00:01:16.47 it means, in the light of the foregoing 00:01:16.48\00:01:18.51 what we've just said. 00:01:18.52\00:01:19.85 Let me now make a conclusion. 00:01:19.86\00:01:21.81 So it means this word, 00:01:21.82\00:01:23.05 "You are to be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect." 00:01:23.06\00:01:26.32 Is the conclusion, what Jesus said before, 00:01:28.11\00:01:30.36 and it is found in the context of the last, these antithesis. 00:01:30.37\00:01:34.08 So, can you read from verse 43. 00:01:34.09\00:01:36.86 "You've heard that it was said, 00:01:36.87\00:01:39.00 'You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.' 00:01:39.01\00:01:41.27 But I say it to you, love your enemies 00:01:41.28\00:01:43.45 and bless those who curse you, 00:01:43.46\00:01:44.84 do good to those who hate you, 00:01:44.85\00:01:47.04 and pray for those who spitefully use you 00:01:47.05\00:01:49.32 and persecute you that you may be 00:01:49.33\00:01:51.90 sons of your Father in heaven. 00:01:51.91\00:01:54.33 For He makes the Sun rise on the evil and the good, 00:01:54.34\00:01:57.79 and sends rain on the just and the unjust. 00:01:57.80\00:02:01.12 For if you love those who love you, 00:02:01.13\00:02:02.55 what reward have you? 00:02:02.56\00:02:04.19 Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 00:02:04.20\00:02:07.46 And if you greet your brethren only, 00:02:07.47\00:02:10.32 what do you do more than others? 00:02:10.33\00:02:12.08 Do not even the tax collectors do this? 00:02:12.09\00:02:14.87 Therefore, you shall be perfect, 00:02:14.88\00:02:17.61 just as your Father in heaven is perfect." 00:02:17.62\00:02:19.51 Okay, let's address one issue, 00:02:19.52\00:02:21.93 it was number of years ago, 00:02:21.94\00:02:23.74 that some people who read the Gospel they said, 00:02:23.75\00:02:26.07 "You see the Gospel, 00:02:26.08\00:02:27.09 they don't give the historical reality." 00:02:27.10\00:02:29.60 Among the Jewish people at the time of Jesus, 00:02:29.61\00:02:31.94 there was never, never teaching. 00:02:31.95\00:02:35.27 "You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemies." 00:02:35.28\00:02:37.94 However, with the discovery of the Qumran writings, 00:02:37.95\00:02:41.78 it came to the light that those people, 00:02:41.79\00:02:44.49 they really were teaching is 00:02:44.50\00:02:46.38 "You should hate the sons of darkness 00:02:46.39\00:02:50.58 and love only the sons of light." 00:02:50.59\00:02:53.47 So finally it was brought to the light 00:02:53.48\00:02:55.78 that actually this concept was very much present 00:02:55.79\00:02:59.88 among the Jewish people at the time of the Jesus. 00:02:59.89\00:03:02.61 And now Jesus goes on what is that we have here. 00:03:02.62\00:03:05.88 What is the popular standard according to Jesus? 00:03:07.01\00:03:09.16 The popular standard is that "You love your enemies," 00:03:09.17\00:03:14.59 that "You don't love your enemies. 00:03:14.60\00:03:15.85 You just love those who are very, very close to you. 00:03:15.86\00:03:19.71 And isn't that the way much of the world operates today. 00:03:19.72\00:03:22.25 We see many societies and cultures 00:03:22.26\00:03:23.99 that still practice that way. 00:03:24.00\00:03:25.64 Okay, let me tell you, Jesus said, 00:03:25.65\00:03:27.90 if I'm a Christian and I'm white, 00:03:27.91\00:03:32.44 and I love only people who are of same skin color as I am, 00:03:32.45\00:03:37.27 then what is the difference between me 00:03:37.28\00:03:39.35 and those who are not Christians? 00:03:39.36\00:03:40.94 This is what they're doing. 00:03:40.95\00:03:42.88 If I like only people who love me, 00:03:42.89\00:03:45.87 who treat me well, who are very close to me, 00:03:45.88\00:03:48.63 neglect others people, that's what everybody does. 00:03:48.64\00:03:51.58 Yeah. Believe me, even, even the most criminals, 00:03:51.59\00:03:55.27 they know to love their families and to their friends. 00:03:55.28\00:03:58.36 But you see, the difference between Christians 00:03:58.37\00:04:01.18 and those who do not follow Jesus Christ 00:04:01.19\00:04:03.61 is that they love both good and bad people. 00:04:03.62\00:04:07.45 They love tax collectors, they love the righteous people, 00:04:07.46\00:04:10.29 they love everybody because of that love of Jesus 00:04:10.30\00:04:13.34 that is in their life. 00:04:13.35\00:04:14.77 And after that... and then Jesus said in verse 47, 00:04:14.78\00:04:19.11 "If you greet only your brothers, 00:04:19.12\00:04:23.36 what are you better than Gentiles." 00:04:23.37\00:04:25.13 Because they are doing, doing in the same way. 00:04:25.14\00:04:28.07 Verse 46 "If you love only those who love you, 00:04:29.15\00:04:33.64 who respect you, what reward do you have? 00:04:33.65\00:04:37.56 Do not even the tax collectors do the same?" 00:04:37.57\00:04:40.89 It seems, Ranko, that you're saying 00:04:40.90\00:04:42.84 in many cases people were saying 00:04:42.85\00:04:44.30 "Well, let me compare my love 00:04:44.31\00:04:45.65 with what everybody else is doing?" Yeah. 00:04:45.66\00:04:47.75 But Jesus is now entering, introducing a new measurement, 00:04:47.76\00:04:51.85 "Don't measure yourself by what everyone else is doing", 00:04:51.86\00:04:54.29 but here it says, "As your Father in Heaven." 00:04:54.30\00:04:56.92 Apparently the Father loves differently with the rain, 00:04:56.93\00:04:59.92 and the just and the unjust. 00:04:59.93\00:05:01.24 The Father treats people differently. 00:05:01.25\00:05:03.31 You see what we have here is, my Christianity, 00:05:03.32\00:05:08.28 my relations with people is not defined by the popular culture. 00:05:08.29\00:05:12.78 Yes. By the popular behavior, 00:05:12.79\00:05:14.26 and attitude that people have in the world, 00:05:14.27\00:05:16.90 is defined by the way how God treats people. 00:05:16.91\00:05:20.58 And how is that God treats people in verse 45, 00:05:20.59\00:05:24.44 "So that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; 00:05:24.45\00:05:27.84 for He causes the Sun to rise on the evil and the good, 00:05:27.85\00:05:31.70 and sends the rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." 00:05:31.71\00:05:34.09 And now let's go to verse 48, "Therefore," 00:05:34.10\00:05:39.00 if God loves old people, 00:05:39.01\00:05:42.90 good and bad, righteous and unrighteous, 00:05:42.91\00:05:45.60 God loves, therefore you are supposed to be perfect 00:05:45.61\00:05:52.59 as your Father who is in Heaven. 00:05:52.60\00:05:54.34 So verse 48, Glenn, is not about the moral perfection 00:05:54.35\00:05:59.20 as God is sinless, I must become sinless. 00:05:59.21\00:06:02.79 If that's the text, then Jesus puts 00:06:02.80\00:06:04.87 something to us which is impossible. 00:06:04.88\00:06:07.62 Jesus never taught it. 00:06:07.63\00:06:09.12 Actually the same text, you remember that we mentioned 00:06:09.13\00:06:12.30 that there is another version 00:06:12.31\00:06:13.38 of the "Sermon on The Mount" in the Gospel of Luke. 00:06:13.39\00:06:15.91 In Chapter 6, verse 36 of the Gospel of Luke, 00:06:15.92\00:06:19.78 the same statement, the same quote that Jesus made says, 00:06:19.79\00:06:23.98 "Be merciful just as your Father is merciful." 00:06:23.99\00:06:30.34 This is what perfection is. 00:06:30.35\00:06:31.79 It means, treat people, be perfect in your attitude 00:06:31.80\00:06:36.24 toward people as God is with regard. 00:06:36.25\00:06:38.87 You know, there is an old Gospel song 00:06:38.88\00:06:40.00 that has come to my mind as you're sharing that, 00:06:40.01\00:06:42.18 there is a wideness in God's mercy. Yes. 00:06:42.19\00:06:44.58 Sometimes we as Christians haven't reflected that wideness, 00:06:44.59\00:06:48.02 that generosity, that graciousness of God. 00:06:48.03\00:06:52.98 Ranko, we don't have much more time-- 00:06:52.99\00:06:54.26 But Glenn, Glenn, when I know how God is patience, 00:06:54.27\00:06:58.25 patient with me, I know what God did for me, my sin 00:06:58.26\00:07:01.87 despite the fact that I did not deserve it 00:07:01.88\00:07:04.73 and now I had become a Christian 00:07:04.74\00:07:07.37 and I try to put people down, 00:07:07.38\00:07:09.53 because of their shortcomings, because of sins. 00:07:09.54\00:07:12.42 No, Jesus said, "Be merciful as your Father is merciful." 00:07:12.43\00:07:18.07 All right, where else do we need to go? 00:07:19.75\00:07:21.42 We have to go to the rest of the Sermon on the Mount" 00:07:21.43\00:07:23.28 in a few minutes that is left. 00:07:23.29\00:07:25.48 Actually the entire "Sermon on the Mount" 00:07:25.49\00:07:27.44 is it goes according to so called chiastic structure. 00:07:27.45\00:07:31.63 When the first part matches the last part, 00:07:31.64\00:07:33.79 the next one, the next one, 00:07:33.80\00:07:35.38 and we come to the center, 00:07:35.39\00:07:36.71 center usually the most important. 00:07:36.72\00:07:38.55 Do you know what comes at the center 00:07:38.56\00:07:39.95 of "The Sermon on the Mount?" 00:07:39.96\00:07:40.96 I have here this chiastic structure in my notes, 00:07:40.97\00:07:43.74 actually is the Lord's prayer. 00:07:43.75\00:07:46.60 Do you know what is at the center of the Lord's prayer? 00:07:46.61\00:07:51.07 It's how to forgive to people, 00:07:51.08\00:07:53.81 forgive them their debts as God has forgiven to us our debts. 00:07:53.82\00:07:59.89 Actually, this is really what the entire sermon is all about. 00:07:59.90\00:08:03.88 As we are making survey through that is what Jesus, 00:08:03.89\00:08:07.80 Jesus try to show in rest of the sermon is, 00:08:07.81\00:08:11.04 when we have relationship with God, 00:08:11.05\00:08:13.35 when we are the citizens of the kingdom. 00:08:13.36\00:08:17.19 when we pray, it will not be public to make display, 00:08:17.20\00:08:22.16 we are praying to God. Okay. 00:08:22.17\00:08:24.52 When we help people, it will not to be 00:08:24.53\00:08:26.78 because I want my business to prosper, 00:08:26.79\00:08:29.66 because I see human needs, I want to help. 00:08:29.67\00:08:32.12 When I fast, it's because of my relationship with God. 00:08:32.13\00:08:35.44 It's not to make, to make it public. 00:08:35.45\00:08:37.83 When I belong to God, the end of Chapter 6, 00:08:37.84\00:08:42.25 I don't worry about tomorrow, 00:08:42.26\00:08:44.87 I plan my life what I will do tomorrow. 00:08:44.88\00:08:48.25 I try to organize my life but I don't worry 00:08:48.26\00:08:51.61 because all my life is put into God's hands. 00:08:51.62\00:08:56.44 I know that God cares as he cares 00:08:56.45\00:08:58.32 according to the end of this text. 00:08:58.33\00:09:00.71 God cares for birds, 00:09:00.72\00:09:02.26 God cares for grass in the field, 00:09:02.27\00:09:04.74 God cares for flowers, etcetera. 00:09:04.75\00:09:08.07 God cares for me and Jesus said 00:09:08.08\00:09:10.92 "But seek first the kingdom," 00:09:10.93\00:09:14.17 we are the citizens of the kingdom. 00:09:14.18\00:09:16.06 "Seek the kingdom and His righteousness 00:09:16.07\00:09:19.18 and all these things will be provided to you." 00:09:19.19\00:09:22.45 There is this constant balance between 00:09:22.46\00:09:25.12 the vertical and the horizontal, 00:09:25.13\00:09:27.27 our relationship with others, our relationship with God. 00:09:27.28\00:09:29.92 And they are constantly intersecting 00:09:29.93\00:09:31.42 here throughout the sermon. 00:09:31.43\00:09:32.42 And this sorted relationship with God 00:09:32.43\00:09:34.97 always results this sorted relationship 00:09:34.98\00:09:37.54 with fellow human beings. 00:09:37.55\00:09:40.22 Now we have the conclusion of the "Sermon on the Mount." 00:09:40.23\00:09:42.01 All right. Let's go to it. 00:09:42.02\00:09:43.12 Do you remember how we began the sermon? 00:09:43.13\00:09:45.31 There is the difference between those 00:09:45.32\00:09:47.13 whose life is defined by their relationship with God, 00:09:49.08\00:09:54.13 they are blessed, they have a joy in these life 00:09:54.14\00:09:58.55 and from those whose journey these lives 00:09:58.56\00:10:02.50 is defined by external circumstances. 00:10:02.51\00:10:05.22 Now this is exactly how the "Sermon on the Mount" concludes. 00:10:05.23\00:10:08.79 Glenn, can you do it? Very-- 00:10:08.80\00:10:11.47 Okay, let's go to story of the two builders. 00:10:11.48\00:10:13.32 Twenty four. 00:10:13.33\00:10:14.33 Matthew 7:24, "Therefore whoever hears 00:10:14.34\00:10:16.69 these sayings of Mine, and does them, 00:10:16.70\00:10:18.95 I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock, 00:10:18.96\00:10:22.05 and the rain descended and the floods came, 00:10:22.06\00:10:24.08 and the winds blew and beat on that house, 00:10:24.09\00:10:26.34 and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 00:10:26.35\00:10:30.10 But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine 00:10:30.11\00:10:31.85 and does not do them, will be like a foolish man 00:10:31.86\00:10:34.59 who built his house on the sand, 00:10:34.60\00:10:35.99 and the rain descend, and the floods came, 00:10:36.00\00:10:38.42 and the winds blew and beat on that house and it fell. 00:10:38.43\00:10:41.63 And great was its fall. 00:10:41.64\00:10:44.15 And so it was, when Jesus ended these sayings, 00:10:44.16\00:10:46.48 that the people were astonished at His teaching, 00:10:46.49\00:10:48.65 for He taught them as one having authority, 00:10:48.66\00:10:51.43 and not as the scribes." 00:10:51.44\00:10:52.73 So, Glenn, we have here two houses and two builders. 00:10:52.74\00:10:57.22 Okay, one house is built on sand, 00:10:57.23\00:10:59.20 you know, when we were in Israel there. 00:10:59.21\00:11:01.38 To build on the sand it's so convenient, 00:11:01.39\00:11:03.25 you just do quickly there in the sand, etcetera. 00:11:03.26\00:11:05.53 you put there, you can build 00:11:05.54\00:11:06.82 that house very, very fast, etcetera. 00:11:06.83\00:11:09.21 But in Palestine in the time of Jesus, 00:11:09.22\00:11:11.34 if you wanted to have a stable house, 00:11:11.35\00:11:13.52 you have to carry all that material 00:11:13.53\00:11:15.21 on your shoulder there on the rock. 00:11:15.22\00:11:16.73 It was very inconvenient. Yes. 00:11:16.74\00:11:18.40 And finally, you build those two houses. 00:11:18.41\00:11:20.51 There is no difference between the two houses. 00:11:20.52\00:11:22.39 It seems. There is no difference. 00:11:23.88\00:11:25.78 Yeah. They're all etcetera. 00:11:25.79\00:11:27.08 But how do you know about the quality of those houses. 00:11:28.50\00:11:30.97 Jesus said, when the storm comes, 00:11:30.98\00:11:34.88 when the flood comes, only the house that is built 00:11:34.89\00:11:38.96 on the foundation of Jesus Christ on the rock 00:11:38.97\00:11:42.33 because in the Bible God is the rock. 00:11:42.34\00:11:45.22 Jesus is the rock. 00:11:45.23\00:11:47.10 Only the house that is built on him, 00:11:47.11\00:11:49.30 you see the sand are the external circumstances of life. 00:11:49.31\00:11:52.94 If my Christianity, if my happiness is built 00:11:52.95\00:11:57.86 on the popular concept of the world in which I live. 00:11:57.87\00:12:01.52 Build on external circumstances, 00:12:01.53\00:12:04.44 of course, I can be good Christian 00:12:04.45\00:12:06.55 when everything is okay. 00:12:06.56\00:12:08.29 But when hardship comes into my life, 00:12:08.30\00:12:11.13 then the difference will be shown. 00:12:11.14\00:12:14.11 Actually, it is with these two metaphors 00:12:14.12\00:12:17.41 that Jesus makes an appeal to His listeners to tell them, 00:12:17.42\00:12:22.56 "You have to make the choice, what is the foundation? 00:12:22.57\00:12:27.56 On which you are building the house of your life." 00:12:27.57\00:12:31.23 It's a great question for each one of us, Ranko 00:12:31.24\00:12:33.09 to think about how we're building our lives? 00:12:33.10\00:12:35.44 What's our foundation? 00:12:35.45\00:12:37.27 Glenn, I would like to conclude with this, 00:12:37.28\00:12:39.79 to invite our viewers-- is the question is, 00:12:39.80\00:12:43.42 what is the foundation 00:12:43.43\00:12:45.38 upon which you are building your house? 00:12:45.39\00:12:49.07 I know that in my life, 00:12:49.08\00:12:51.17 so many times I built on the external circumstances. 00:12:51.18\00:12:55.12 When accepted Jesus Christ as my personal savior, 00:12:55.13\00:12:58.50 everything made the difference. 00:12:58.51\00:12:59.95 Please, choose Jesus Christ today. 00:12:59.96\00:13:03.06
