Hi, I'm Glenn Russell, 00:00:21.63\00:00:22.71 welcome to our exploration of the gospel of Matthew. 00:00:22.72\00:00:27.36 This is part of 3ABN series entitled Books of the Book. 00:00:27.37\00:00:31.07 And it's been a fascinating journey so far, 00:00:31.08\00:00:33.61 with our teacher Dr. Ranko Stefanovic, 00:00:33.62\00:00:36.25 as we've been digging in through this wonderful, wonderful book. 00:00:36.26\00:00:39.96 There is just so many under, depths of meaning that, 00:00:39.97\00:00:43.32 we're not even able to touch so much of it. 00:00:43.33\00:00:45.67 And especially today we'll find that challenge. 00:00:45.68\00:00:47.34 We're into one of the most powerful passages, 00:00:47.35\00:00:50.21 the sermon on the mount of Jesus in Matthew Chapter 5. 00:00:50.22\00:00:53.12 Ranko, it's a marvelous thing to explore, this sermon. 00:00:53.13\00:01:00.12 You've preached a lot of sermons. 00:01:00.13\00:01:01.81 I've preached a few. 00:01:01.82\00:01:04.04 Never have I ever been able to match 00:01:04.05\00:01:06.97 the beauty, the depth, the symmetry. 00:01:06.98\00:01:09.25 This is just a marvelous document, isn't it? 00:01:09.26\00:01:12.34 Yeah, no wonder that even many in non-Christians 00:01:12.35\00:01:18.22 and I lived in completely different political system 00:01:18.23\00:01:22.93 that was fighting against God. 00:01:22.94\00:01:24.96 But actually they stick to the Sermon on the Mount, 00:01:24.97\00:01:27.05 they said, this is the masterpiece, 00:01:27.06\00:01:29.02 how people, people should live. 00:01:29.03\00:01:31.08 And really here we have, that Jesus describes, 00:01:31.09\00:01:34.82 the characteristics of the citizens of His kingdom. 00:01:34.83\00:01:37.73 It's a masterpiece, 00:01:37.74\00:01:38.71 we need the master to help us understand. 00:01:38.72\00:01:40.44 Let's pray together. 00:01:40.45\00:01:42.10 Lord, as we go through Your word. 00:01:42.11\00:01:44.48 We want Your word to come through to us. 00:01:44.49\00:01:47.23 Not human opinions, not our own speculations 00:01:47.24\00:01:51.87 we want to understand what You have 00:01:51.88\00:01:54.46 given to us in the scriptures. 00:01:54.47\00:01:57.37 Lord, be with us now as we study, 00:01:57.38\00:01:59.78 as we explore, as we learn and most of all, 00:01:59.79\00:02:02.24 may we be doers of your word, in Jesus name, amen. 00:02:02.25\00:02:06.81 Ranko, we've been walking through the gospel of Matthew. 00:02:06.82\00:02:09.20 We're in Chapter 5, we've seen that Jesus presents here 00:02:09.21\00:02:12.49 these beatitude a radically new way of looking at life. 00:02:12.50\00:02:16.67 A new way of living, a new way of thinking 00:02:16.68\00:02:18.96 about God and following Him, 00:02:18.97\00:02:21.27 a way they will turn us into light 00:02:21.28\00:02:24.02 and salt to make a difference. 00:02:24.03\00:02:25.55 You see, Glenn, as we mentioned, 00:02:25.56\00:02:27.94 ancient Greeks they believed that the people 00:02:27.95\00:02:31.51 are spared [02:31] of how much of farthey're blessed. 00:02:31.52\00:02:34.60 The Jews were not quite different. 00:02:34.61\00:02:36.91 Wealth was a sign from God. 00:02:36.92\00:02:39.00 Yeah. Poverty was a curse. 00:02:39.01\00:02:42.41 But Jesus radically changes this concept, 00:02:44.90\00:02:47.87 telling that people are not 00:02:47.88\00:02:51.09 because of external circumstances. 00:02:51.10\00:02:53.77 People are because of their internal relationships, 00:02:53.78\00:02:57.53 their internal connection with God. 00:02:57.54\00:02:59.93 What God did that's not around them, 00:02:59.94\00:03:02.76 what God does personally with them. 00:03:02.77\00:03:06.23 All right, let's go on now with Matthew Chapter 5 00:03:06.24\00:03:08.52 and I like to read verses 17 through 20. 00:03:08.53\00:03:12.55 "Do not think that I came to destroy 00:03:12.56\00:03:14.19 the Law or the Prophets." 00:03:14.20\00:03:15.22 Now, we must remember, Jesus speaking. 00:03:15.23\00:03:17.53 "I did not come to destroy the law of the prophets, 00:03:17.54\00:03:20.50 I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 00:03:20.51\00:03:23.07 For assuredly, I say to you, 00:03:23.08\00:03:25.24 till heaven and earth pass away, 00:03:25.25\00:03:27.30 one jot or one tittle will by no means 00:03:27.31\00:03:30.42 pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 00:03:30.43\00:03:34.35 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least 00:03:34.36\00:03:36.03 of these commandments, and teaches men to do so 00:03:36.04\00:03:38.61 shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven. 00:03:38.62\00:03:41.27 But whoever does them and teaches them, 00:03:41.28\00:03:44.49 he should be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 00:03:44.50\00:03:46.55 For I say to you that unless you're righteousness 00:03:46.56\00:03:50.25 exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, 00:03:50.26\00:03:53.22 you will by no means enter heaven." 00:03:53.23\00:03:55.58 Now let me just ask one question, 00:03:55.59\00:03:57.86 the people of Jesus day 00:03:57.87\00:04:00.09 thought that the Pharisees were pretty good folks. 00:04:00.10\00:04:02.36 We don't have the same view today. 00:04:02.37\00:04:04.17 But they thought that the Pharisees were pretty good. 00:04:04.18\00:04:06.24 Jesus is raising another standard. 00:04:06.25\00:04:08.67 Actually Pharisees were very good people. 00:04:08.68\00:04:12.11 They were very-- 00:04:12.12\00:04:13.09 But you see when people read the Bible 00:04:13.10\00:04:15.64 they get different picture of the Pharisees, 00:04:15.65\00:04:18.07 and so many times unfortunately in Christians they say, 00:04:18.08\00:04:21.33 you see the gospel as they do not present 00:04:21.34\00:04:24.02 the correct picture of the Pharisees. 00:04:24.03\00:04:25.85 That's not true. 00:04:25.86\00:04:27.24 The gospel is they do not deal 00:04:27.25\00:04:28.69 with the Pharisees in general terms. 00:04:28.70\00:04:30.98 They deal with special groups of the Pharisees. 00:04:30.99\00:04:33.72 You see the Pharisees and Sadducees 00:04:33.73\00:04:35.49 they hated each other. 00:04:35.50\00:04:36.76 They don't like each other. 00:04:36.77\00:04:37.98 They can't understand each other. 00:04:37.99\00:04:39.17 Their philosophy mindset was completely different. 00:04:39.18\00:04:41.41 But in the gospels you have always certain Pharisees 00:04:41.42\00:04:44.88 and the Sadducees they're always together. 00:04:44.89\00:04:48.66 Jesus addresses a particular group of the Pharisees. 00:04:48.67\00:04:53.28 Not all the Pharisees in general. 00:04:53.29\00:04:55.09 Many Pharisees actually they accept Jesus 00:04:55.10\00:04:57.83 like Nicodemus or Joseph of Arimathea. 00:04:57.84\00:05:03.37 And in the Book of Acts 00:05:03.38\00:05:04.41 many Pharisees they became Christians, yes. 00:05:04.42\00:05:06.40 But they often were in conflict 00:05:06.41\00:05:07.92 with Jesus over the issue of law. 00:05:07.93\00:05:09.57 Help us see now, 00:05:09.58\00:05:10.82 how does Jesus address the issue of the law. 00:05:10.83\00:05:13.98 Did Jesus come to do away with the law? 00:05:13.99\00:05:17.00 Jesus makes very clear that actually 00:05:17.01\00:05:21.83 He did not come to abolish the law. 00:05:21.84\00:05:24.59 This is strange that many Christians 00:05:24.60\00:05:26.19 go in the Sermon on the Mount. 00:05:26.20\00:05:27.84 Actually they argue when Jesus came 00:05:27.85\00:05:31.38 that He brought the end to the law. 00:05:31.39\00:05:35.12 But Jesus makes very clear, 00:05:35.13\00:05:36.57 but we have something to admit, 00:05:36.58\00:05:38.16 what kind of law, the law does Jesus talking about? 00:05:38.17\00:05:43.52 It says, the law and the prophets 00:05:46.12\00:05:48.12 actually this is not about really Ten Commandments. 00:05:48.13\00:05:50.76 The law and the prophets in the Bible 00:05:50.77\00:05:52.92 means actually the entire Old Testament. 00:05:52.93\00:05:56.47 So Jesus came not to abolish the Old Testament, 00:05:56.48\00:06:01.85 its significance and meaning, Jesus came to fulfill 00:06:01.86\00:06:05.71 all those Old Testament prophecies. 00:06:05.72\00:06:07.49 Do you remember we talk, 00:06:07.50\00:06:08.57 that the purpose of the gospel of Matthew 00:06:08.58\00:06:10.38 is to show that actually Jesus was the fulfillment 00:06:10.39\00:06:13.73 of all those Old Testament prophecies. 00:06:13.74\00:06:16.87 Of course, a part 00:06:16.88\00:06:19.56 of that Old Testament are the commandments. 00:06:19.57\00:06:22.14 The Ten Commandments that are later 00:06:22.15\00:06:24.36 elaborated in the text. 00:06:24.37\00:06:25.72 And He repeatedly says, 00:06:25.73\00:06:27.08 "you've heard that it was said, but I say to you." 00:06:27.09\00:06:29.19 "But I say to you..." Actually the key text here is, 00:06:29.20\00:06:33.99 "I say to you," it's a verse 20. 00:06:34.00\00:06:38.59 "I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses 00:06:38.60\00:06:44.09 that of the scribes and Pharisees, 00:06:44.10\00:06:46.78 you will not enter the kingdom of heaven." 00:06:46.79\00:06:52.05 Then something I learned, very interesting. 00:06:52.06\00:06:53.97 I don't know if you notice it. 00:06:53.98\00:06:55.76 That Jesus does not indicate 00:06:55.77\00:06:57.83 the Pharisees did not have righteousness. 00:06:57.84\00:07:01.28 They had the righteousness. 00:07:01.29\00:07:03.50 They really were engaged 00:07:03.51\00:07:06.46 in studying the Torah and the law. 00:07:06.47\00:07:09.23 But what was the problem? 00:07:09.24\00:07:11.03 They tried to stick to the letter of the law. 00:07:11.04\00:07:14.30 The law says, you shall not kill. 00:07:14.31\00:07:16.72 They did not kill. 00:07:16.73\00:07:18.14 But Jesus indicates here in all these passages 00:07:18.15\00:07:21.99 that actually a person can be guilty of killing 00:07:22.00\00:07:26.55 without taking somebody's life. 00:07:26.56\00:07:29.59 So he's taking it to deeper level 00:07:29.60\00:07:32.05 and restoring the meaning, 00:07:32.06\00:07:33.12 because it must have been bit of a shock for His listeners. 00:07:33.13\00:07:36.91 For them to hear, look you got to be more spiritual 00:07:36.92\00:07:40.74 than the most spiritual person they knew or more religious 00:07:40.75\00:07:43.52 than the most religious people they knew. 00:07:43.53\00:07:45.32 How is that possible? 00:07:45.33\00:07:46.42 No, actually here it comes 00:07:46.43\00:07:48.70 a radical shock to all the Pharisees. 00:07:48.71\00:07:53.31 Jesus first said, I did not come 00:07:53.32\00:07:56.07 to abolish the law and the prophets. 00:07:56.08\00:07:58.34 Second, He recognizes 00:07:58.35\00:08:00.19 the righteousness of the Pharisees. 00:08:00.20\00:08:02.59 But actually Jesus, can I say that, 00:08:02.60\00:08:05.14 Jesus is more legalist than the Pharisees. 00:08:05.15\00:08:08.36 You better explain that one, Ronko. 00:08:08.37\00:08:09.85 It's better. Why? 00:08:09.86\00:08:11.73 Because for Jesus it's not only not to commit adultery 00:08:11.74\00:08:16.29 to have physical act of sexual relationships. 00:08:16.30\00:08:20.62 Jesus said that the person can commit adultery 00:08:20.63\00:08:23.82 even in his own thoughts. 00:08:23.83\00:08:25.80 So Jesus goes much, much deeper. 00:08:25.81\00:08:27.93 You see Jesus does-- 00:08:27.94\00:08:30.20 the difference between the Jesus and the Pharisees 00:08:30.21\00:08:32.29 is that the Pharisees paid attention 00:08:32.30\00:08:35.18 to the external performance of the law. 00:08:35.19\00:08:38.64 Jesus internalizes the law and he intensifies the law. 00:08:38.65\00:08:44.05 Do you see the difference? Yes. 00:08:44.06\00:08:45.13 I wanna catch and make sure we catch these two words. 00:08:45.14\00:08:47.72 Internalizing and intensifying. 00:08:47.73\00:08:50.30 It's a higher standard. But it's an internal standard. 00:08:50.31\00:08:53.66 In that sense what I say 00:08:53.67\00:08:55.51 that Jesus is more legalist than the Pharisees. 00:08:55.52\00:08:58.19 But in positive way, you know, not in negative way. 00:08:58.20\00:09:01.83 Now there is so much here in this Sermon on the Mount 00:09:01.84\00:09:05.15 that we could talk about that's so powerful. 00:09:05.16\00:09:08.39 Every Christian should read this regularly. 00:09:08.40\00:09:10.22 Oh yeah. Regularly, regularly. 00:09:10.23\00:09:12.30 But theirs is also some puzzling parts. 00:09:12.31\00:09:15.90 Matthew Chapter 5, verse 48 for example. Yeah. 00:09:15.91\00:09:20.42 Is one that there is a lot of struggles over. 00:09:20.43\00:09:24.53 Can you help us with that one a little bit, 00:09:24.54\00:09:26.14 because, you know, true or false 00:09:26.15\00:09:29.06 if you ask your students this question? 00:09:29.07\00:09:30.94 Does God want us to be perfect? 00:09:30.95\00:09:33.11 You know, some people say no we should strive our best 00:09:33.12\00:09:36.85 and then we'll quote this phrase. 00:09:36.86\00:09:39.36 So can we move up to that 00:09:39.37\00:09:41.36 and lead us into that discussion. 00:09:41.37\00:09:43.17 You see, Glenn, the starting point 00:09:43.18\00:09:45.57 for understanding of this what Jesus said in 5:48 00:09:47.04\00:09:50.08 it's really verse 20. 00:09:50.09\00:09:51.79 If your righteousness does not exceed 00:09:51.80\00:09:56.67 the righteousness of the Pharisees. 00:09:56.68\00:09:59.00 You know, I would like to remind our viewers 00:09:59.01\00:10:02.29 that we talk about that before we understand 00:10:02.30\00:10:04.80 what the text means to us today. 00:10:04.81\00:10:07.86 We have to understand 00:10:07.87\00:10:09.76 what the text meant to those people of this time. 00:10:09.80\00:10:13.62 If we want really to make this text relevant to us, 00:10:13.63\00:10:15.91 we can ask what kind of righteousness. 00:10:15.92\00:10:18.97 My right shouldn't exceed the right of the Pharisees. 00:10:18.98\00:10:21.17 We don't have the Pharisees today. 00:10:21.18\00:10:23.40 But let's make sense of that, 00:10:23.41\00:10:25.03 what was the righteousness of the Pharisees? 00:10:25.04\00:10:27.25 Jesus said in verse 21, 00:10:27.26\00:10:29.22 "You have heard you shall not commit the murder." 00:10:29.23\00:10:33.02 But in verse 22, Jesus says, 00:10:33.03\00:10:36.10 "Whoever is angry with his brother. 00:10:36.11\00:10:40.04 He is already guilty of murder." 00:10:40.05\00:10:44.82 Or we go to verse 27, 00:10:44.83\00:10:48.74 "You have heard it was said 00:10:48.75\00:10:50.32 you shall not commit adultery." 00:10:50.33\00:10:52.41 And you can say, you know, I'm pure. 00:10:52.42\00:10:56.56 I'm not guilty I never commit adultery. 00:10:56.57\00:10:58.75 But Jesus said at the judgment day 00:10:58.76\00:11:00.86 many will be found guilty of adultery 00:11:00.87\00:11:03.30 because they did not have an opportunity to do it 00:11:03.31\00:11:06.28 but they did everything in the thoughts. 00:11:06.29\00:11:10.43 Then in verse 31 Jesus talks about a common way 00:11:10.44\00:11:14.73 among the Pharisees to the verse 00:11:14.74\00:11:16.39 why for any reason. 00:11:16.40\00:11:18.07 But that Jesus said, and you see, 00:11:18.08\00:11:20.10 we call it antithesis. 00:11:20.11\00:11:21.28 Jesus said, you heard this is the popular opinion. 00:11:21.29\00:11:26.12 This is the popular view. 00:11:26.13\00:11:27.82 But Jesus said, the Christians are not those 00:11:27.83\00:11:31.84 who behave according to the popular morality, 00:11:31.85\00:11:36.07 according to the popular standard of honesty, 00:11:36.08\00:11:39.36 the popular way of life. 00:11:39.37\00:11:41.58 The Christians behave by asking the question, 00:11:41.59\00:11:44.74 is this God's will for us? 00:11:44.75\00:11:47.86 What is God's will for me to do in this life? 00:11:47.87\00:11:51.22 And now we're coming to you question, 00:11:51.23\00:11:54.29 the last of all these things Jesus said, 00:11:54.30\00:11:57.32 "You have heard that it was said." 00:11:57.33\00:12:00.19 Verse 38, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. 00:12:00.20\00:12:06.86 Jesus here quotes 00:12:06.87\00:12:08.28 the Old Testament law. Old Testament law. 00:12:08.29\00:12:10.86 But you see, that Old Testament law 00:12:10.87\00:12:12.94 was given to the court and to the judges. 00:12:12.95\00:12:17.12 Not to, for personal relationship among the people. 00:12:17.13\00:12:20.82 Unfortunately, all this antithesis here 00:12:20.83\00:12:23.57 they do not deal with the law of God, 00:12:23.58\00:12:25.11 they deal with the forsake system of the law. 00:12:25.12\00:12:29.65 Their interpretation, the interpretation of the law, 00:12:29.66\00:12:32.35 that was the standard that was the norm 00:12:32.36\00:12:34.37 that they established in the society, 00:12:34.38\00:12:36.16 but the followers of Jesus, 00:12:36.17\00:12:38.15 can I say, the Christians today. 00:12:38.16\00:12:39.80 They do not behave according to the popular standard 00:12:39.81\00:12:43.10 that the people sets, they behave according 00:12:43.11\00:12:45.76 to the standard that God set for them. 00:12:45.77\00:12:49.18 So it means it's not minimum, 00:12:49.19\00:12:52.23 it's not about the letter of the law, 00:12:52.24\00:12:56.17 it's about that inner attitude toward God. 00:12:56.18\00:12:58.30 Can you explain that one? 00:12:58.31\00:13:00.33 See I got married very long ago, 00:13:00.34\00:13:03.28 next year will be our fortieth anniversary. 00:13:03.29\00:13:06.77 I marry to the beautiful wife and we got married. 00:13:06.78\00:13:13.30 We did not write any rule 00:13:13.31\00:13:16.32 that I will have to follow 00:13:16.33\00:13:17.69 in order to be legally right before my wife. 00:13:17.70\00:13:21.67 But I still keep all those rules, why? 00:13:21.68\00:13:24.67 Because I love my wife. 00:13:24.68\00:13:26.95 In my marriage, I am not trying to do minimum, 00:13:26.96\00:13:30.90 you see, the birthday comes 00:13:30.91\00:13:32.60 I have to buy something to my wife. 00:13:32.61\00:13:34.21 Let me go and buy something for five dollars 00:13:34.22\00:13:36.54 and something to do for my wife. 00:13:36.55\00:13:38.05 I try to do something, 00:13:38.06\00:13:39.55 the best and the most that I can buy for my wife. 00:13:39.56\00:13:42.67 Does it make sense? I hope she's listening. 00:13:42.68\00:13:44.40 Because my relationship with my wife 00:13:44.41\00:13:46.49 are defined by that inner connection, 00:13:46.50\00:13:49.67 inner relationships that we have. 00:13:49.68\00:13:51.74 In that way your righteousness exceeds 00:13:51.75\00:13:56.06 that minimum that you can do. 00:13:56.07\00:13:57.56 This is exactly what the Pharisees were doing. 00:13:57.57\00:14:00.54 Were keeping a very relationship perspective. Yes. 00:14:00.55\00:14:03.65 That our attitudes, our behavior's 00:14:03.66\00:14:05.91 not the only measurement. 00:14:05.92\00:14:07.51 It's also the motivation behind it, 00:14:07.52\00:14:09.66 the desire the relationship with it. 00:14:09.67\00:14:11.87 Well, you've still not fully answered 00:14:11.88\00:14:13.71 the question to my satisfaction. 00:14:13.72\00:14:15.36 So dig into it a little bit more 00:14:15.37\00:14:17.59 right after our break here, we'll be right back. 00:14:17.60\00:14:19.65
