Hi, I'm Glenn Russell. 00:00:22.30\00:00:23.30 Welcome to our program, 00:00:23.31\00:00:25.44 exploring the wonderful Book of Matthew. 00:00:25.45\00:00:28.89 It's part of the 3ABN series 00:00:28.90\00:00:30.45 entitled "The Books of the Book." 00:00:30.46\00:00:32.92 I like you to meet our guest, teacher, Dr. Ranko Stefanovic. 00:00:32.93\00:00:37.08 Ranko, you teach at 00:00:37.09\00:00:38.12 Andrews University Theological Seminary. 00:00:38.13\00:00:41.02 We're exploring a fascinating book, 00:00:41.03\00:00:42.63 what draws you to this Gospel of Matthew? 00:00:42.64\00:00:44.70 You've been mentioning 00:00:44.71\00:00:45.85 how it's one that you've been teaching this for a few years 00:00:45.86\00:00:49.20 and does it get old, 00:00:49.21\00:00:50.74 does it get to something like where you feel you know it all, 00:00:50.75\00:00:53.07 are you still discovering new things? 00:00:53.08\00:00:54.83 Actually, I have been teaching Gospel of Matthew 00:00:54.84\00:00:56.62 for about 17 years, 00:00:56.63\00:00:59.10 and every time when I teach that class 00:00:59.11\00:01:03.25 I always something to learn for my students, 00:01:03.26\00:01:05.47 it's a wonderful book. 00:01:05.48\00:01:06.79 Of course, every Gospel is beautiful in its own way. 00:01:06.80\00:01:10.51 Every part of scripture is that way, isn't it? 00:01:10.52\00:01:12.41 Oh yeah. The more we explore, 00:01:12.42\00:01:13.61 the more God keeps bringing us new treasures. 00:01:13.62\00:01:15.96 It's a wonderful gift. 00:01:15.97\00:01:17.55 Let's begin with prayer, 00:01:17.56\00:01:18.60 as we continue in our study of scripture. 00:01:18.61\00:01:21.87 Lord, we ask that You will guide us. 00:01:21.88\00:01:24.31 We need You to teach us. 00:01:24.32\00:01:25.79 We cannot know You except 00:01:25.80\00:01:27.80 that You have chosen to reveal yourself to us. 00:01:27.81\00:01:30.79 May we treasure this gift of revelation. 00:01:30.80\00:01:33.61 The Revelation of Jesus our Savior 00:01:33.62\00:01:36.00 through the pages of scripture. 00:01:36.01\00:01:37.86 In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. 00:01:37.87\00:01:41.49 All right, Ranko, we have been leading up 00:01:41.50\00:01:44.02 to this great passage we're going to get into today. 00:01:44.03\00:01:47.31 We've seen Jesus began his ministry with the Baptism, 00:01:47.32\00:01:51.40 taken into the wilderness and tempted, 00:01:51.41\00:01:53.64 and then He begins His ministry in Galilee. 00:01:53.65\00:01:55.76 Now we come to Matthew Chapter 5. 00:01:55.77\00:01:59.01 Tell us a little bit about this. 00:01:59.02\00:02:02.48 It was earlier in our series 00:02:02.49\00:02:06.90 in introducing the Gospel of Matthew, 00:02:06.91\00:02:08.56 we saw that the emphasis of the Gospel of Matthew 00:02:08.57\00:02:11.56 is on the two-fold aspect of Jesus ministry. 00:02:11.57\00:02:16.50 Jesus ministry consisted 00:02:16.51\00:02:17.92 according to the Gospel of Matthew 00:02:17.93\00:02:19.09 in teaching and preaching 00:02:19.10\00:02:22.02 and healing people, and helping them in their needs. 00:02:22.03\00:02:27.28 Helping them in a practical way. 00:02:27.29\00:02:30.38 This is how the Gospel of Matthew is organized. 00:02:30.39\00:02:33.00 We mentioned that Matthew consist of five major blocks 00:02:33.01\00:02:38.69 and here we are dealing with the first major block, 00:02:38.70\00:02:42.23 which is known as "The Sermon on the Mount" 00:02:42.24\00:02:45.31 Chapters 5 to 7. 00:02:45.32\00:02:47.77 Do you remember that formula saying, 00:02:47.78\00:02:50.76 "When Jesus finished all these sayings, 00:02:50.77\00:02:52.86 now Jesus goes to put it into the practice, 00:02:52.87\00:02:56.07 helping people in their needs." 00:02:56.08\00:02:58.82 So Chapters 8 and 9, 00:02:58.83\00:03:01.70 so we are dealing with that first major block of the book. 00:03:01.71\00:03:05.60 So five major sections. 00:03:05.61\00:03:08.37 These courses are teachings and the narratives. Yes. 00:03:08.38\00:03:10.92 And we're looking at the first major teaching section. 00:03:10.93\00:03:13.60 Major teaching of Jesus. 00:03:13.61\00:03:14.85 Actually, it's really describing 00:03:14.86\00:03:17.09 who and what the citizens of the kingdoms are. All right. 00:03:17.10\00:03:22.26 It would be good for us to read some of this, wouldn't it? 00:03:22.27\00:03:23.82 Oh, yes. 00:03:23.83\00:03:25.69 Glenn, before we go on. Okay. 00:03:25.70\00:03:28.72 In order to make the full meaning 00:03:28.73\00:03:30.72 of "The Sermon on the Mount" 00:03:30.73\00:03:31.78 we have something to mention, 00:03:31.79\00:03:34.23 that so many readers of the Gospels, 00:03:34.24\00:03:38.17 they do not realize 00:03:38.18\00:03:40.09 whenever we talk about Sermon on the Mount 00:03:40.10\00:03:41.67 is always Matthew Chapters 5 to 7, 00:03:41.68\00:03:44.72 but not too many readers of the Bible realize 00:03:44.73\00:03:46.95 that there is also another similar Sermon 00:03:46.96\00:03:50.59 that is actually found, let me go over there, 00:03:50.60\00:03:52.99 that is found in the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 6. 00:03:53.00\00:03:56.47 Okay. Verses 20 to 49. 00:03:56.48\00:04:00.83 Many liberal scholars, they say, you see, 00:04:02.96\00:04:06.99 we have two similar sermons but they're quite different. 00:04:07.00\00:04:12.73 Well, there's disagreements. 00:04:12.74\00:04:13.99 Jesus actually never preached one sermon. 00:04:14.00\00:04:16.22 Matthew collected some sayings of Jesus, 00:04:16.23\00:04:18.11 who collected some sayings of Jesus, 00:04:18.12\00:04:20.00 they made it sermons. 00:04:20.01\00:04:21.24 Actually I disagree with that. 00:04:21.25\00:04:23.64 I will suggest to you, you know, 00:04:23.65\00:04:26.15 Jesus was a preacher 00:04:26.16\00:04:27.82 and Glenn, you are a preacher, I'm a preacher, 00:04:27.83\00:04:30.20 I travel, we travel throughout the world. 00:04:30.21\00:04:33.31 I make one sermon and I don't preach 00:04:33.32\00:04:36.04 in new place always new sermon. 00:04:36.05\00:04:40.24 So many times I repeat my sermon 00:04:40.25\00:04:42.87 in several different, different places. 00:04:42.88\00:04:44.91 Because it applies. It applies. 00:04:44.92\00:04:46.52 However, I change a little bit of that. 00:04:46.53\00:04:49.26 I adjust that sermon to the needs of my audience. 00:04:49.27\00:04:53.98 You see if Jesus worked for three and a half years, 00:04:53.99\00:04:56.39 how much is that? It's approximately 1,260 days. 00:04:56.40\00:05:01.36 How many sermons did Jesus preach? 00:05:01.38\00:05:02.86 If He preached only twice a week. 00:05:02.87\00:05:04.66 Jesus preached several hundreds sermons. 00:05:04.67\00:05:07.45 Evidently Jesus didn't not every time preach a new sermon. 00:05:07.46\00:05:11.65 He would take the sermons He preached before or a speech 00:05:11.66\00:05:14.67 that He made before and He would repeat it 00:05:14.68\00:05:18.94 but apply it to the context of His audience. 00:05:18.95\00:05:22.61 So Matthew and Mark they contain two different sermons. 00:05:22.62\00:05:27.54 Similar content, how do we know that? 00:05:27.55\00:05:29.21 Matthew has three Chapters. 00:05:29.22\00:05:32.18 Luke has only 29 verses. 00:05:32.19\00:05:35.71 But there is something else, 00:05:35.72\00:05:36.92 if we go to Luke Chapter 6 verse 17, 00:05:36.93\00:05:40.24 it says that when Jesus delivered this speech, 00:05:40.25\00:05:42.94 He was in the plain. It was not on the mount. 00:05:42.95\00:05:46.48 On the level place. On the level place. 00:05:46.49\00:05:49.04 Okay. And, and, there is a difference between, 00:05:49.05\00:05:52.74 so you believe that Jesus preached 00:05:52.75\00:05:54.33 on two different occasions similar content, 00:05:54.34\00:05:56.61 but we should notice something, there is also basic difference, 00:05:56.62\00:05:59.93 the question is, why did Matthew choose this long sermon, 00:05:59.94\00:06:04.15 and Luke, the shorter sermon. 00:06:04.16\00:06:05.86 Glenn, you'll do it in Chapter 5 of Matthew, 00:06:05.87\00:06:09.30 I'll do Luke 6, just few things. 00:06:09.31\00:06:11.48 Can you read Chapter 5 verse 3 of Matthew? 00:06:11.49\00:06:15.41 Matthew Chapter 5, verse 3, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, 00:06:15.42\00:06:18.85 for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." 00:06:18.86\00:06:20.38 This is in Matthew, the same, the attitude, 00:06:20.39\00:06:23.53 let's see how it sounds in Luke Chapter 6, verse 20, 00:06:23.54\00:06:27.15 "Blessed are you who are poor for yours is the kingdom." 00:06:27.16\00:06:31.03 What is the basic difference? Something is missing. 00:06:31.04\00:06:34.11 It's here are those who are poor in spirit, 00:06:34.12\00:06:37.36 here those who are really poor. 00:06:37.37\00:06:39.36 Yeah. Just one more item. 00:06:39.37\00:06:42.79 Can you read verse 6 of Matthew Chapter 5? 00:06:42.80\00:06:45.80 Okay. "Blessed are those 00:06:45.81\00:06:46.80 who hunger and thirst for righteousness, 00:06:46.81\00:06:49.24 for they shall be filled." 00:06:49.25\00:06:50.32 What about verse 21 in Luke? 00:06:50.33\00:06:52.69 "Blessed are you who hunger now." 00:06:52.70\00:06:55.83 What is missing? Righteousness. 00:06:55.84\00:06:58.10 You see when Jesus preached to the gentiles, 00:06:58.11\00:07:01.12 according to the Gospel of Luke, 00:07:01.13\00:07:02.44 He cared about the physical needs. 00:07:02.45\00:07:04.96 When He preached to those Pharisees, 00:07:04.97\00:07:06.87 et cetera, and the Jews, 00:07:06.88\00:07:09.80 He cared about their spiritual needs. 00:07:09.81\00:07:11.90 That's why we need both the sermons. 00:07:11.91\00:07:13.99 We need both for balance, don't we? 00:07:14.00\00:07:15.95 I'll tell the viewers as we are going through 00:07:15.96\00:07:17.89 "The sermon on the Mount" you will say, boy, 00:07:17.90\00:07:19.77 my needs are not spiritual, I am faithful to God, 00:07:19.78\00:07:22.64 I love God so much, but nobody knows when they come home. 00:07:22.65\00:07:25.89 I don't have money to pay my electricity, 00:07:25.90\00:07:27.74 my power will be cut off, 00:07:27.75\00:07:29.10 or doctors told me a few days ago 00:07:29.11\00:07:32.30 that I have few more weeks to live, et cetera. 00:07:32.31\00:07:35.23 I need something, there is a Savior, 00:07:35.24\00:07:37.85 God meets with people where they are. 00:07:37.86\00:07:40.03 When people have needs, Jesus comes to them 00:07:40.04\00:07:44.04 and addresses their personal needs that they have. 00:07:44.05\00:07:47.70 All right. So Jesus preaches in Matthew 5. 00:07:47.71\00:07:52.66 Yes. A Sermon on the Mount. 00:07:52.67\00:07:54.25 Yes. What should we know about this? 00:07:54.26\00:07:56.78 Actually both in Luke and Matthew, both sermons, 00:07:56.79\00:08:01.30 they begin with special section, we call them the beatitudes. 00:08:01.31\00:08:05.69 Why the beatitudes, because there are eight sayings 00:08:05.70\00:08:11.61 and each sayings begins with one single word, 00:08:11.62\00:08:14.15 which is in our English translation blessed. 00:08:14.16\00:08:16.32 Glenn, would you read those beatitudes? 00:08:16.33\00:08:17.49 And by the way, 00:08:17.50\00:08:18.54 beatitudes is kind of a made up word, isn't it? 00:08:18.55\00:08:20.90 Actually we will come to that after reading-- 00:08:20.91\00:08:23.18 Sure, Matthew Chapter 5 verse 1. Actually 1 to 12. 00:08:23.19\00:08:27.63 "And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, 00:08:27.64\00:08:30.47 and when He had seated, His disciples came to Him. 00:08:30.48\00:08:34.03 Then He opened His mouth, and taught them saying, 00:08:34.04\00:08:36.87 Blessed are the poor in spirit, 00:08:36.88\00:08:39.15 for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 00:08:39.16\00:08:41.14 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 00:08:41.15\00:08:44.20 Blessed are the meek, 00:08:44.21\00:08:45.77 for they shall inherit the earth. 00:08:45.78\00:08:47.45 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, 00:08:47.46\00:08:51.38 for they shall be filled. 00:08:51.39\00:08:53.55 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. 00:08:53.56\00:08:56.76 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 00:08:56.77\00:09:00.45 Blessed are the peacemakers, 00:09:00.46\00:09:02.27 for they shall be called the sons of God. 00:09:02.28\00:09:04.89 Blessed are those who are persecuted 00:09:04.90\00:09:06.50 for righteousness' sake, 00:09:06.51\00:09:07.94 for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 00:09:07.95\00:09:10.32 Blessed are you when they revile you 00:09:11.32\00:09:14.38 and persecute you and say all kinds of evil 00:09:14.39\00:09:17.34 against you falsely from my sake. 00:09:17.35\00:09:19.91 Rejoice and be exceeding glad, 00:09:19.92\00:09:22.21 for your great is a reward in heaven, 00:09:22.22\00:09:23.76 for so they persecuted the prophets 00:09:23.77\00:09:25.99 who were before you." 00:09:26.00\00:09:27.54 Okay. So we see, we have eight sayings. 00:09:27.55\00:09:31.33 Each one begins with the word "Blessed" in English. 00:09:31.34\00:09:34.69 And I hope that the readers will understand 00:09:34.70\00:09:36.72 what I'm trying to say. 00:09:36.73\00:09:38.74 All those who are bilingual, they know that sometimes 00:09:38.75\00:09:42.04 when you try to translate something 00:09:42.05\00:09:43.46 from one language to another, then the words, that they fit. 00:09:43.47\00:09:48.36 So sometimes you have to use one sentence 00:09:48.37\00:09:50.03 in order to explain that word. 00:09:50.04\00:09:52.60 In Greek, the language in which the Gospel of Matthew 00:09:52.61\00:09:56.70 was written, actually contains the word makarios, 00:09:56.71\00:10:00.91 which is translated as the word "Blessed." 00:10:00.92\00:10:04.24 Another alternative word 00:10:04.25\00:10:05.44 for the word makarios is "Happy." 00:10:05.45\00:10:09.55 By the way, usually English speaking people-- 00:10:09.56\00:10:14.56 don't know that in English we have standard English word, 00:10:14.57\00:10:18.76 which is called makarism 00:10:18.77\00:10:20.21 that comes from the Greek word makarios. 00:10:20.22\00:10:22.63 Makarism simply means happiness. 00:10:22.64\00:10:25.47 But we really have to understand the word, 00:10:25.48\00:10:27.81 the root of these words. 00:10:27.82\00:10:30.65 Among ancient Greeks, the word makarios meant 00:10:30.66\00:10:35.81 that the person was spared 00:10:35.82\00:10:39.07 of all hardships of life and here is the point. 00:10:39.08\00:10:43.77 When a person have a happy family, 00:10:43.78\00:10:47.08 good bank account, I mean, money-- 00:10:47.09\00:10:49.08 was rich, when everything went good in his life, 00:10:49.09\00:10:53.81 ancient Greeks would say you see this person is makarios. 00:10:53.82\00:10:57.31 A good life. Good life, 00:10:57.32\00:11:00.26 this is among ancient Greeks. 00:11:00.27\00:11:03.79 What did we notice here in "The Sermon on the Mount?" 00:11:03.80\00:11:06.90 Who are those who are makarios? 00:11:06.91\00:11:10.54 You'll forgive me, I'm using the word makarios, 00:11:10.55\00:11:12.67 in order to get the full sense 00:11:12.68\00:11:15.32 of the meaning of this word. You are not spared. 00:11:15.33\00:11:18.28 Those who are hungry and thirsty in, 00:11:18.29\00:11:19.84 Luke, or righteousness, those who are poor, 00:11:19.85\00:11:23.08 those who are persecuted, those who are. 00:11:23.09\00:11:26.78 Glenn, now let me ask you one question. 00:11:26.79\00:11:28.09 I would like to ask the viewers, 00:11:28.10\00:11:29.57 just to start for a moment to think, 00:11:29.58\00:11:31.80 was Jesus unrealistic? 00:11:31.81\00:11:33.30 Glenn, would you be honest with me? 00:11:33.31\00:11:36.72 When you don't have money to pay your bills, 00:11:36.73\00:11:41.61 do you say, "I am blessed?" 00:11:41.62\00:11:44.50 We would call that kind of person out of touch. 00:11:44.51\00:11:47.70 Actually, they are attend-- Upside down. 00:11:47.71\00:11:49.29 I've never seen a student who does not have money 00:11:49.30\00:11:52.37 to pay his tuition and he must leave. 00:11:52.38\00:11:55.23 I don't think, we rejoice in our poverty very much. 00:11:55.24\00:11:57.89 And he say--but you see the Christians 00:11:57.90\00:11:59.94 are so many times unrealistic, you know, 00:11:59.95\00:12:02.29 you know, I am blessed because I'm poor. 00:12:02.30\00:12:05.56 Did you hear anybody to say, you know, 00:12:05.57\00:12:07.23 doctor told me I have few more weeks to live, 00:12:07.24\00:12:09.79 I'm so much blessed. So what is that, 00:12:09.80\00:12:13.24 that Jesus tried to say here with His beatitudes. 00:12:13.25\00:12:17.23 Did Jesus try to be unrealistic to say, 00:12:17.24\00:12:20.53 those people who are hungry, 00:12:20.54\00:12:22.85 who are thirsty, people who are poor, 00:12:22.86\00:12:25.89 people who suffer hardships in this life, 00:12:25.90\00:12:27.90 they are blessed. This is not what Jesus tried to say. 00:12:27.91\00:12:31.04 Actually if you really want to translate 00:12:31.05\00:12:33.21 these beatitudes from original Greek, 00:12:33.22\00:12:36.54 it should be "You are blessed or you are happy, 00:12:36.55\00:12:40.88 despite the fact that you are poor, 00:12:40.89\00:12:45.88 that you are hungry, that you are persecute," 00:12:45.89\00:12:48.44 that's the difference. You are not blessed 00:12:48.45\00:12:51.02 because you are poor, you are blessed 00:12:51.03\00:12:54.19 despite the fact that you are poor, 00:12:54.20\00:12:55.69 that you are hungry, that you, that you face 00:12:55.70\00:12:58.46 the difficulties of this life and it makes difference. 00:12:58.47\00:13:01.14 So you have a joy despite what happens to you? 00:13:01.15\00:13:04.00 Yes. So what is the point that Jesus tried to make? 00:13:04.01\00:13:07.82 When we accept Jesus as our personal savior, 00:13:07.83\00:13:12.09 when we are accepted by God, 00:13:12.10\00:13:15.02 when we become God's children, 00:13:15.03\00:13:17.54 God never promised to us 00:13:17.55\00:13:20.58 that we will be spared of hardships of life. 00:13:20.59\00:13:23.84 God never told us that he will take us 00:13:23.85\00:13:26.27 out of the difficulties of life, 00:13:26.28\00:13:29.65 what God promised to us is, Jesus said, 00:13:29.66\00:13:32.94 in the world you will have tribulation, 00:13:32.95\00:13:35.37 is that what Jesus said? That's right. 00:13:35.38\00:13:36.87 What God promised to us when we have to go 00:13:36.88\00:13:40.01 through the difficulties and hardships of life, 00:13:40.02\00:13:44.67 God will be with us, not that He will take us 00:13:44.68\00:13:47.67 out of that, He will be working with us 00:13:47.68\00:13:50.62 through the difficulties of life. 00:13:50.63\00:13:51.85 As the Psalm said, "Even if I had to work 00:13:51.86\00:13:55.02 through the valley of the shadow of death, 00:13:55.03\00:13:57.46 You will be with me." 00:13:57.47\00:13:59.71 Knowing that God is with me, 00:13:59.72\00:14:03.20 will make me blessed, give me the assurance 00:14:03.21\00:14:06.62 that I'm not forgotten, that I'm not forsaken by God, 00:14:06.63\00:14:10.59 that God is with me. 00:14:10.60\00:14:12.93 The external circumstances 00:14:12.94\00:14:14.76 will not define my relationship with God, 00:14:14.77\00:14:17.34 my relationship with God 00:14:17.35\00:14:19.01 will define the circumstances in which we are. 00:14:19.02\00:14:22.32 Ranko, you've raised some questions in my mind. Yes. 00:14:22.33\00:14:24.75 We've got to come back to right after our break. 00:14:24.76\00:14:27.12 We'll be right back. 00:14:27.13\00:14:28.39
