We're back in the Gospel of Mathew, 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 exploring Chapter 4, seeking to understand, 00:00:02.80\00:00:06.37 more of the insights that we can gain 00:00:06.40\00:00:08.03 from the temptations of Jesus. 00:00:08.06\00:00:10.64 Ranko, as we look at these temptations, 00:00:10.67\00:00:12.78 we see some things about the work of the devil. 00:00:12.81\00:00:15.34 He quotes scripture, so we can't just assume 00:00:15.37\00:00:18.07 that anyone who refers the Bible 00:00:18.10\00:00:20.11 is necessarily following God's will. 00:00:20.14\00:00:22.84 And he misquotes it and he seems to get out issues. 00:00:22.87\00:00:26.30 Now, how can he say here, 00:00:26.33\00:00:28.54 you know, in the third temptation, 00:00:28.57\00:00:30.76 you know, I'll give you all these kingdoms of the world. 00:00:30.79\00:00:33.75 Where they his? They were. 00:00:33.78\00:00:35.99 Can I just before we deal with that to finish 00:00:36.02\00:00:38.23 the subject that--that we as is though. 00:00:38.26\00:00:41.27 We're dealing with, first, three temptations of Jesus. 00:00:41.30\00:00:45.05 If Jesus failed at this point, 00:00:45.08\00:00:48.89 we would not have the cross. 00:00:48.92\00:00:51.22 We would not have the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:00:51.25\00:00:53.53 We would not have the four Gospels. 00:00:53.56\00:00:56.12 So this was the most decisive battle. 00:00:56.15\00:00:58.59 And I want to assure the readers, 00:00:58.62\00:01:01.07 what we have here, is the reversal 00:01:01.10\00:01:03.55 of the appearance of sin at the beginning of Genesis, 00:01:03.58\00:01:06.79 where Adam failed Paul said. In those three areas. 00:01:06.82\00:01:10.11 Because Jesus won the victory, 00:01:10.14\00:01:11.93 so can you remind us one more time, 00:01:11.96\00:01:14.10 the three aspects of the temptation? 00:01:14.13\00:01:15.50 The lust of the eyes. 00:01:15.53\00:01:18.30 The lust of the flesh and the pride of life. 00:01:18.33\00:01:21.75 This is exactly how the sin came into this world. 00:01:21.78\00:01:25.13 Glenn, can you open Genesis 3:6? Genesis Chapter 3. 00:01:25.16\00:01:30.96 We can't understand what is going on. 00:01:30.99\00:01:32.83 Otherwise those temptations, they you know, 00:01:32.86\00:01:34.78 do not have too much significance. 00:01:34.81\00:01:37.06 So you're suggesting that 00:01:37.09\00:01:38.46 Jesus succeeds where others have failed. 00:01:38.49\00:01:40.33 Yeah. Jesus, actually, we have a reversal here, 00:01:40.36\00:01:43.78 of the coming of sin into this world. 00:01:43.81\00:01:45.44 With the human beings where Adam, actually failed, 00:01:45.47\00:01:48.95 Jesus won the victory 00:01:48.98\00:01:50.35 in order to save His people from their sins. 00:01:50.38\00:01:51.79 And you know, we better say hallelujah. Oh, yes. 00:01:51.82\00:01:54.04 You know, without this, this is our hope. 00:01:54.07\00:01:55.88 Can you read 3:6, Genesis? 00:01:55.91\00:01:57.37 Genesis 3:6. All right. 00:01:57.40\00:02:00.02 So when the woman saw that, the tree was good. 00:02:00.05\00:02:02.87 She saw that the tree was good. 00:02:02.90\00:02:04.27 She saw. That was pleasing to the eyes. 00:02:04.30\00:02:07.37 So the first was good for food, to eat. 00:02:07.40\00:02:10.55 What is that, the lust of the flesh? The next one. 00:02:10.58\00:02:13.30 It was pleasing with the eyes, 00:02:13.33\00:02:14.70 and a tree desirable to make one wise. 00:02:14.73\00:02:16.81 The pride of life and pleasing to the eyes, 00:02:16.84\00:02:19.17 it's the lust of eyes. 00:02:19.20\00:02:21.26 And she took of its fruit and ate it. 00:02:21.29\00:02:23.48 How did the first sin come? 00:02:23.51\00:02:25.85 Through the lust of eyes, 00:02:25.88\00:02:27.55 the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. 00:02:27.58\00:02:31.12 So, now Jesus comes, 00:02:31.15\00:02:33.25 this is His first step to save His people from their sins. 00:02:33.28\00:02:37.45 It is exactly where the first human couple failed, 00:02:37.48\00:02:42.56 opening, okay, the door for sin 00:02:42.59\00:02:46.24 and temptation in this world. 00:02:46.27\00:02:47.88 Jesus had to win the victory. 00:02:47.91\00:02:49.91 So we have first temptation that you mentioned. 00:02:49.94\00:02:52.40 If you're Son of God, 00:02:52.43\00:02:54.61 say to these stones to become bread. 00:02:54.64\00:02:56.47 What is this? 00:02:56.50\00:02:58.10 It's the lust of the flesh, okay. 00:02:58.13\00:03:02.08 Then after that Jesus put, sorry, 00:03:02.11\00:03:05.16 the devil put Jesus on the top of the mountain. 00:03:05.19\00:03:07.99 And he shows him all the kingdom of this world. 00:03:08.02\00:03:10.60 I will give it to you all these things, 00:03:10.63\00:03:13.47 okay, whatever you see. 00:03:13.50\00:03:15.53 Actually, these words are really the lust of the eyes. 00:03:15.56\00:03:18.42 And after that he said to Jesus, 00:03:18.45\00:03:20.74 and he put him there on the pinnacle of the temple. 00:03:20.77\00:03:23.69 Jump down, throw yourself, 00:03:23.72\00:03:25.90 when you jump down from the temple, 00:03:25.93\00:03:27.58 people will applaud to you 00:03:27.61\00:03:29.08 and tell you 'Jesus the Messiah'. 00:03:29.11\00:03:31.29 This is 'Superman,' this is 'Hero'. 00:03:31.32\00:03:33.43 You know, this is the Son of Man from the Book of Daniel. 00:03:33.46\00:03:36.87 You know, coming with the clouds, 00:03:36.90\00:03:38.27 nothing can happen to him. 00:03:38.30\00:03:39.67 Actually, this was the pride of life. 00:03:39.70\00:03:41.96 This was actually, the three aspects of the temptations 00:03:41.99\00:03:45.84 that Jesus had to go through in order to save 00:03:45.87\00:03:48.43 His people from their sins. 00:03:48.46\00:03:50.20 And not only the first couple have failed, 00:03:50.23\00:03:52.18 but we have all failed. Yes. 00:03:52.21\00:03:53.88 What does this portrait of the temptations of Jesus 00:03:53.91\00:03:56.79 tell you about Jesus as our sin-bearer as the sinless one? 00:03:56.82\00:04:01.83 What picture should we be sure that we have of Him? 00:04:01.86\00:04:04.00 Actually that's what the Bible says, 00:04:04.03\00:04:06.25 that Jesus took all our sins upon Himself. 00:04:06.28\00:04:10.15 You see, we are tempted, 00:04:10.18\00:04:11.55 and I would like to tell the viewers 00:04:11.58\00:04:13.87 and I am not saying to you, 00:04:13.90\00:04:15.37 but I'm saying also about myself. We're all sinners. 00:04:15.40\00:04:18.92 We all have different temptations in our life, 00:04:18.95\00:04:21.18 and believe me so many times, 00:04:21.21\00:04:23.00 I'm asking God always for guidance. 00:04:23.03\00:04:24.99 There's so many times, I feel sorry, 00:04:25.02\00:04:26.60 because I did not succeed, etc. 00:04:26.63\00:04:29.07 But Matthew Chapter 4, give me 00:04:29.10\00:04:31.33 that strong assurance that my Savior. Yes. 00:04:31.36\00:04:36.04 Overcame those temptations. 00:04:36.07\00:04:38.36 He told me, that the victory 00:04:38.39\00:04:40.56 over sin is possible, that's number one. 00:04:40.59\00:04:44.26 And number two, he showed me 00:04:44.29\00:04:46.68 how the victory is possible. How? 00:04:46.71\00:04:50.11 Relying not on my method, on my own way, 00:04:50.14\00:04:55.01 the way how I think that I should succeed in life. 00:04:55.04\00:04:57.90 It's only relying and trusting God. 00:04:57.93\00:05:00.39 Putting my trust in God. 00:05:00.42\00:05:02.20 Never should be an excuse for us to just live in sin. 00:05:02.23\00:05:06.82 And yet there is a tremendous joy, 00:05:06.85\00:05:09.64 tremendous reassurance, to know 00:05:09.67\00:05:11.80 that Jesus has succeeded in every place. 00:05:11.83\00:05:14.62 Actually, I reminded, I think I heard 00:05:14.65\00:05:16.91 that Martin Luther said it, he said, 00:05:16.94\00:05:19.43 when I look at myself, I cannot believe that 00:05:19.46\00:05:23.20 I can be saved and be victor or save. 00:05:23.23\00:05:28.24 But when I look in Jesus, 00:05:28.27\00:05:29.80 I cannot imagine that I'm not saved. Yeah. 00:05:29.83\00:05:33.72 This is the beauty, the beauty of Jesus. 00:05:33.75\00:05:35.20 How can we be lost if we have a Savior like this, 00:05:35.23\00:05:37.36 unless we choose to just ignore Him. 00:05:37.39\00:05:39.17 What a wonderful Savior? 00:05:39.20\00:05:40.75 We wanna go a little bit further in Matthew Chapter 4. 00:05:40.78\00:05:44.84 It says that He went out from there, 00:05:44.87\00:05:47.83 what takes place next? 00:05:47.86\00:05:50.28 Actually, now Jesus begins His public ministry. 00:05:50.31\00:05:53.28 You see his Sonship was pronounced at the baptism. 00:05:53.31\00:05:57.61 His Sonship was tested. 00:05:57.64\00:06:00.33 Now, He has proven what kind of Messiah He would be? 00:06:00.36\00:06:04.60 But the way, do you notice here something. 00:06:04.63\00:06:07.50 What was the purpose of this temptation 00:06:07.53\00:06:09.34 that Satan was doing, 00:06:09.37\00:06:10.74 trying to prevent Jesus to go to the cross? 00:06:10.77\00:06:16.05 You don't need to go to the cross. Sure. 00:06:16.08\00:06:19.41 Do this following things. Take the easy way. 00:06:19.44\00:06:21.77 And I will give all this to you and ever. 00:06:21.80\00:06:24.49 By the way, from this moment on, 00:06:24.52\00:06:27.18 up to the end of Jesus ministry, 00:06:27.21\00:06:29.46 Satan is doing everything to prevent Jesus to the cross. 00:06:29.49\00:06:33.14 Do you remember? 00:06:33.17\00:06:34.54 In Mathew, you will come to that Matthew Chapter 16, 00:06:34.57\00:06:36.88 He even use His beloved disciple by name of Peter 00:06:36.91\00:06:40.94 to prevent Him to go the cross. 00:06:40.97\00:06:42.92 And Jesus had to call Peter, 00:06:42.95\00:06:44.62 go behind me Satan because Jesus saw Peter, 00:06:44.65\00:06:48.10 being used by Satan to prevent Jesus to go to the cross. 00:06:48.13\00:06:51.74 When even Jesus finally was on the cross, 00:06:51.77\00:06:55.77 Satan tried to pull Him down 00:06:55.80\00:06:57.17 from the cross. Come down, come down. 00:06:57.20\00:06:58.57 People were shouting come down and we'll believe in You. 00:06:58.60\00:07:02.65 That was a constant, constant effort, 00:07:02.68\00:07:05.50 effort to prevent Jesus to go to the cross. 00:07:05.53\00:07:08.20 Once, Jesus won the victory over that first temptation, 00:07:08.23\00:07:12.69 where the human beings failed at the beginning. 00:07:12.72\00:07:15.59 Now, Jesus is ready to go 00:07:15.62\00:07:17.79 and to start His public ministry. 00:07:17.82\00:07:19.52 So we see a victorious, triumphant Savior coming forth. 00:07:19.55\00:07:22.76 It says that, let me just read Chapter 4:12. 00:07:22.79\00:07:26.26 "Now when Jesus heard that John was put in prison, 00:07:26.29\00:07:28.62 he departed to Galilee and so forth." 00:07:28.65\00:07:31.02 What's the significance of that He went to Galilee? 00:07:31.05\00:07:33.27 Is this just about geography? 00:07:33.30\00:07:34.67 Please, you can read up to verse 17. 00:07:34.70\00:07:37.16 Okay. Please. 00:07:37.19\00:07:38.56 "And leaving Nazareth, he came to dwell in Capernaum 00:07:38.59\00:07:42.36 which is by the sea, 00:07:42.39\00:07:43.76 in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali 00:07:43.79\00:07:45.96 that it might be fulfilled what was spoken, 00:07:45.99\00:07:47.71 by the prophet Isaiah." 00:07:47.74\00:07:49.45 Saying verse 15, "The land of Zebulun 00:07:49.48\00:07:52.27 and the land of Naphtali by the way of the sea, 00:07:52.30\00:07:55.45 beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 00:07:55.48\00:07:58.86 The people, who sat in darkness, 00:07:58.89\00:08:00.67 have seen a great light, 00:08:00.70\00:08:02.31 and upon those who sat on the region, 00:08:02.34\00:08:03.85 and shadow of death light has dawned. 00:08:03.88\00:08:06.93 From that time Jesus, began to preach and to say, 00:08:06.96\00:08:09.75 repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 00:08:09.78\00:08:12.30 Actually, Glenn, are we aware, that from this moment, 00:08:12.33\00:08:17.41 when Jesus made the first step in His ministry, 00:08:17.44\00:08:19.78 trying to preach the Gospel. 00:08:19.81\00:08:21.99 Or, up to the time, 00:08:22.02\00:08:23.39 just few weeks before His crucifixion. 00:08:23.42\00:08:26.95 All the time, almost three-and half years, 00:08:26.98\00:08:30.42 Jesus ministry was confined to Galilee, 00:08:30.45\00:08:33.56 except when Jesus made short trips to Jerusalem, 00:08:33.59\00:08:37.78 or to other territories. 00:08:37.81\00:08:39.43 It was just very short trips. 00:08:39.46\00:08:41.06 Actually, Jesus mission was completely there-- 00:08:41.09\00:08:43.59 there in Galilee. 00:08:43.62\00:08:45.30 But we have then to understand-- What's Galilee? 00:08:45.33\00:08:49.31 About Galilee. Actually, let me just illustrate little bit. 00:08:49.34\00:08:53.22 You know, Galilee had the north and had a south. 00:08:53.25\00:08:57.80 South was Judaea; north was 00:08:57.83\00:09:00.11 the territory of two tribes, Zebulun and Naphtali. 00:09:00.14\00:09:03.88 We're talking about territory around the Sea of Galilee; 00:09:03.91\00:09:08.03 down was Dead Sea and Judaea, etc. 00:09:08.06\00:09:11.77 If you go there down to Judaea, 00:09:11.80\00:09:14.96 you know, rocky area, Judean desert. 00:09:14.99\00:09:17.96 If you go to the north, around Sea of Galilee, 00:09:17.99\00:09:20.04 it's a fertile ground. 00:09:20.07\00:09:23.29 Farmers, actually all these oranges, etc, 00:09:23.32\00:09:26.59 you know, that were coming from Israel, 00:09:26.62\00:09:28.54 would come from that part of the world. 00:09:28.57\00:09:30.85 But the problem was, that people who lived in Galilee, 00:09:30.88\00:09:34.38 they were not really Jews. 00:09:34.41\00:09:35.90 They were not descendants of Abraham. 00:09:35.93\00:09:38.23 You know, with those 10 tribes-- Yes. 00:09:38.26\00:09:40.71 were deported from Palestine, the king of Assyria hided it. 00:09:40.74\00:09:45.09 After that, the king of Assyria 00:09:45.12\00:09:46.50 brought these pagan people, nations, 00:09:46.53\00:09:49.77 and he settled them there into the territory. 00:09:49.80\00:09:52.57 Okay, so people, who lived in the territory 00:09:52.60\00:09:54.86 were not really the descendants of Abraham. 00:09:54.89\00:09:57.43 It was few decades, before Jesus is, 00:09:57.46\00:10:00.34 that Alexander by name, one of the Jewish kings, 00:10:00.37\00:10:06.51 he forcibly circumcised those people around Shechem, 00:10:06.54\00:10:10.40 so make them to be-- to be Jewish. 00:10:10.43\00:10:13.34 But the problem with these people, 00:10:13.37\00:10:14.74 they were not, never accepted 00:10:14.77\00:10:16.14 by the Pharisees to be Jews. Sure. 00:10:16.17\00:10:18.10 They were outcast, they were rejected. 00:10:18.13\00:10:21.47 Another thing is, they were there in the north. 00:10:21.50\00:10:24.63 Whenever, the enemies of Israel would come to invade Palestine, 00:10:24.66\00:10:29.03 who was the first target? Galileans, okay. 00:10:29.06\00:10:33.45 They were the first target. 00:10:33.48\00:10:34.91 When the enemies were cut, leaving Palestine. 00:10:34.94\00:10:37.70 Who was the last group that actually, 00:10:37.73\00:10:40.78 they express their anger against? 00:10:40.81\00:10:42.69 They were Galileans. 00:10:42.72\00:10:44.25 But something else? 00:10:44.28\00:10:46.39 Since, it was a fertile ground. 00:10:46.42\00:10:48.25 They took about farmers. 00:10:48.28\00:10:50.25 Romans imposed heavy taxes on those people. 00:10:50.28\00:10:54.50 So Romans would take taxes. 00:10:54.53\00:10:57.20 Herod, who made all those building projects, 00:10:57.23\00:11:01.11 another taxes and then tax collectors 00:11:01.14\00:11:03.49 who were collecting those taxes, 00:11:03.52\00:11:06.96 were stealing money from those people for themselves. 00:11:06.99\00:11:08.95 Can you imagine that? 00:11:08.98\00:11:10.35 Those people suffered, so much in that--that area. 00:11:10.38\00:11:17.18 And Jesus came to those people to preach the Gospel. 00:11:17.21\00:11:22.04 So in the text of Isaiah, we read that actually people 00:11:22.07\00:11:26.64 who were sitting in darkness, they saw great light, 00:11:26.67\00:11:29.85 that light came to him and they responded to light. 00:11:29.88\00:11:32.87 Jesus was rejected in Jerusalem, 00:11:32.90\00:11:35.04 but if people embrace to Jesus, they founded Him. 00:11:35.07\00:11:38.28 They recognized him, the great Savior who came, 00:11:38.31\00:11:41.31 when the light shown, people responded to that light. 00:11:41.34\00:11:44.90 Ranko, you're suggesting that God 00:11:44.93\00:11:47.40 came to those who rejected. Those who are outcast. 00:11:47.43\00:11:50.67 He's still doing the same thing today, isn't He? 00:11:50.70\00:11:52.64 You see, Jesus does not have elite, 00:11:52.67\00:11:56.04 a special people that He favors. 00:11:56.07\00:11:58.44 All those people who need the Savior, 00:11:58.47\00:12:02.00 who need Jesus Christ, Jesus come to them. 00:12:02.03\00:12:05.63 And that's why, the beginning of Jesus ministry 00:12:05.66\00:12:08.94 and almost the conclusion of His ministry 00:12:08.97\00:12:11.42 actually happened there, there in Galilee. 00:12:11.45\00:12:14.35 What a Savior? What a Savior? 00:12:14.38\00:12:17.45 He comes to those who need him most. Yes. 00:12:17.48\00:12:21.08 Ranko, as we wrap this up, 00:12:21.11\00:12:23.93 it's the repentance, is the kingdom of heaven. 00:12:23.96\00:12:26.30 How do you see Jesus in these two scenes here? 00:12:26.33\00:12:29.10 Yes. I would like to make the final word to the viewers. 00:12:29.13\00:12:32.10 May be you say, you recognize yourself and say, 00:12:32.13\00:12:34.80 I am the one sitting in darkness, 00:12:34.83\00:12:36.82 on the valley and the shadow of death. 00:12:36.85\00:12:39.08 I feel like Galileans. 00:12:39.11\00:12:41.23 Praise God, that's why we need the Savior 00:12:41.26\00:12:43.94 and the Savior came to save just as one, of you and me. 00:12:43.97\00:12:48.31
