That's right, right. 00:01:24.26\00:01:26.31 And you've traveled in various parts of the world, 00:01:26.34\00:01:28.25 the people are watching, people are listening, 00:01:28.28\00:01:30.15 it's touching lives, and we know 00:01:30.18\00:01:32.74 God's been blessing, so that's tremendous. 00:01:32.77\00:01:35.28 Now, Ranko Stefanovic, 00:01:35.31\00:01:36.68 we're studying the book of Matthew. 00:01:36.71\00:01:38.22 We've gone through the first few chapters 00:01:38.25\00:01:39.94 and this time tell us 00:01:39.97\00:01:41.48 what we're gonna be exploring this time. 00:01:41.51\00:01:43.03 Actually we concluded the section 00:01:43.06\00:01:45.76 on the baptism of Jesus 00:01:45.79\00:01:47.44 with the proclamation that the Father made. 00:01:47.47\00:01:50.42 This is my beloved Son, 00:01:50.45\00:01:54.83 and then after that the Holy Spirit comes 00:01:54.86\00:01:58.20 as a dove up on Jesus equipping, 00:01:58.23\00:02:01.24 enabling Jesus now to start public ministry. 00:02:01.27\00:02:04.26 Actually these two things this is my beloved Son. Yes. 00:02:04.29\00:02:07.83 And the coming of the Holy Spirit is 00:02:07.86\00:02:09.59 exactly the beginning of chapter four. Okay. 00:02:09.62\00:02:13.15 We have the Holy Spirit takes Jesus to the wilderness 00:02:13.18\00:02:17.85 and Sonship of Jesus is now tested today. 00:02:17.88\00:02:20.13 Okay, and before we go there 00:02:20.16\00:02:21.53 we want that same spirit to help us. 00:02:21.56\00:02:22.93 Let's pray together that God will guide us. 00:02:22.96\00:02:25.38 Lord, as we get into Your word once again, 00:02:25.41\00:02:28.64 please come into our hearts and to our minds, 00:02:28.67\00:02:31.17 speak to us through Your word. 00:02:31.20\00:02:33.67 We believe that the Bible is an inspired book 00:02:33.70\00:02:37.99 and that this, these writings, these precious gifts to us 00:02:38.02\00:02:42.86 are a way for us to hear Your voice. 00:02:42.89\00:02:45.23 So we need You to speak, in Jesus name we pray. Amen. 00:02:45.26\00:02:50.01 So a high point and the experience 00:02:50.04\00:02:53.97 the baptism of Jesus, you would expect to be 00:02:54.00\00:02:57.40 a soaring success from then on. 00:02:57.43\00:02:59.88 But chapter four takes us 00:02:59.91\00:03:01.28 a little different direction, doesn't it? 00:03:01.31\00:03:03.04 You know, so many times I meet very good Christians 00:03:03.07\00:03:08.10 and they come to me they said, I'd like to be rebaptized. 00:03:08.13\00:03:10.90 They said, you know, I was baptized 00:03:10.93\00:03:13.51 and I had many problems in my spiritual life. 00:03:13.54\00:03:17.06 Would you now, I would like to be rebaptized. 00:03:17.09\00:03:19.05 I said, why? 00:03:19.08\00:03:21.39 Because they hope when they are baptized 00:03:21.42\00:03:24.29 all the spiritual problems will disappear from their lives. 00:03:24.32\00:03:28.07 Actually I've to persuade them 00:03:28.10\00:03:29.50 that baptism will not prevent the devil to tempt them 00:03:29.53\00:03:36.24 and to create problems in their lives. 00:03:36.27\00:03:38.27 Actually when you are baptized -when you're baptized, 00:03:38.30\00:03:41.17 it's a good avenue of temptations 00:03:41.20\00:03:43.14 for Satan to come to you. 00:03:43.17\00:03:44.54 This is exactly what happened in Jesus life. 00:03:44.57\00:03:47.05 Let's read a little bit of chapter four. 00:03:47.08\00:03:48.95 Can you read the first 11 actually verses? 00:03:48.98\00:03:50.92 All right. Matthew 4:1. 00:03:50.95\00:03:55.55 "Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit 00:03:55.58\00:03:57.15 into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 00:03:57.18\00:04:00.00 When he had fasted forty days and forty nights, 00:04:00.03\00:04:02.59 afterwards he was hungry. 00:04:02.62\00:04:05.11 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, 00:04:05.14\00:04:08.32 "If you are the Son of God, 00:04:08.35\00:04:10.36 command that these stones become bread." 00:04:10.39\00:04:13.14 But He answered and said, 00:04:13.17\00:04:15.02 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:04:15.05\00:04:18.65 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. 00:04:18.68\00:04:22.39 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, 00:04:22.42\00:04:25.39 set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 00:04:25.42\00:04:26.85 and said to Him, 00:04:26.88\00:04:28.25 "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. 00:04:28.28\00:04:30.38 For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you, 00:04:30.41\00:04:33.25 and in their hands they shall bear you up, 00:04:33.28\00:04:35.53 Lest you dash your foot against a stone.'" 00:04:35.56\00:04:38.46 Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 00:04:38.49\00:04:40.31 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God. 00:04:40.34\00:04:41.94 And again, the devil took Him up 00:04:41.97\00:04:43.52 on an exceedingly high mountain, 00:04:43.55\00:04:45.69 and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 00:04:45.72\00:04:48.24 And he said to Him, 00:04:48.27\00:04:49.73 "All these things I will give You 00:04:49.76\00:04:52.06 if You will fall down and worship me." 00:04:52.09\00:04:54.17 Then Jesus said to him, 00:04:54.20\00:04:55.57 "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 00:04:55.60\00:04:58.26 'You shall worship the Lord your God, 00:04:58.29\00:05:00.29 and Him only shall you serve. 00:05:00.32\00:05:02.38 Then the devil left Him, and behold, 00:05:02.41\00:05:04.29 angels came and ministered to Him." What a scene. Yeah. 00:05:04.32\00:05:09.01 Right, this is a scene hidden from human experience. 00:05:09.04\00:05:13.18 Matthew only knows about this 00:05:13.21\00:05:14.58 through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. 00:05:14.61\00:05:16.41 No one else is there, Jesus is alone He's in the wilderness, 00:05:16.44\00:05:20.76 the Holy Spirit is with Him. 00:05:20.79\00:05:22.16 And if we're gonna face temptation 00:05:22.19\00:05:23.56 we better be led by the spirit. 00:05:23.59\00:05:25.19 Glenn, do you remember when we mention in the beginning 00:05:25.22\00:05:27.90 about the purpose of the gospel of Matthew. 00:05:27.93\00:05:29.96 He came to save His people from their sins. 00:05:29.99\00:05:33.03 How to save them from their sins 00:05:33.06\00:05:34.81 to go through the experience of His people 00:05:34.84\00:05:37.14 in order to save them. 00:05:37.17\00:05:38.75 So let's go, just in few moments to the Old Testament 00:05:38.78\00:05:42.04 about experience of God's peoples. 00:05:42.07\00:05:45.36 They went there to Egypt. All right. 00:05:45.39\00:05:47.86 Then from Egypt they had to go through water, 00:05:47.89\00:05:51.42 to go to the wilderness how long were they in wilderness? 00:05:51.45\00:05:53.95 Forty years and then there in the wilderness 00:05:53.98\00:05:57.56 they tempted God constantly. 00:05:57.59\00:06:01.82 There after the wilderness 00:06:01.85\00:06:03.96 they went there to the mount there, 00:06:03.99\00:06:05.52 there were given the Ten Commandments. 00:06:05.55\00:06:07.40 Do you notice something? 00:06:07.43\00:06:08.80 This is exactly how the Holy Spirit 00:06:08.83\00:06:12.20 through Matthew organized the life of Jesus is. 00:06:12.23\00:06:15.43 So you're showing parallels. 00:06:15.46\00:06:16.83 Jesus came out of Egypt, you remember that? 00:06:16.86\00:06:20.13 Then the next episode is, He goes to the water. 00:06:20.16\00:06:25.08 There is announcement, this is my son by the way 00:06:25.11\00:06:28.40 the same what God said to Moses. Yes. 00:06:28.43\00:06:30.92 Coming--bring my son out of Egypt, 00:06:30.95\00:06:34.57 okay, Then Jesus went to the wilderness there 00:06:34.60\00:06:37.48 and it is we will see in the next presentation 00:06:37.51\00:06:40.43 He delivers explains the law of God there 00:06:40.46\00:06:42.79 from the mount there, sermon on the mount. 00:06:42.82\00:06:46.41 Actually Jesus how He has presented is really going 00:06:46.44\00:06:49.26 through experience of His people in order to save them. 00:06:49.29\00:06:51.94 And what understatement of scripture. Yes. 00:06:51.97\00:06:55.35 You know, He fasted forty days and He's hungry. 00:06:55.38\00:06:58.80 I'm sure He was much more than hungry. Okay. 00:06:58.83\00:07:01.53 And the devil comes to Him. 00:07:01.56\00:07:03.65 Now what do we learn about the devil in this passage? 00:07:03.68\00:07:06.52 What do we learn? 00:07:06.55\00:07:07.92 We see something about Jesus, 00:07:07.95\00:07:09.32 but we also learn something about the devil. 00:07:09.35\00:07:10.90 You know today we live in the world when Christians 00:07:10.93\00:07:14.52 out there becoming skeptic about Satan, 00:07:14.55\00:07:17.75 so we don't use the word Satan any longer. 00:07:17.78\00:07:20.24 We don't use the word demons any longer. 00:07:20.27\00:07:22.84 We are talking about physiological issues 00:07:22.87\00:07:25.21 that people have emotionally 00:07:25.24\00:07:27.17 you know, some chemicals within our body 00:07:27.20\00:07:29.15 that make us to be like this or this. 00:07:29.18\00:07:32.37 But when we read the Bible, Satan is a real person. 00:07:32.40\00:07:36.37 He is the enemy of God and he is the enemy of God's people. 00:07:36.40\00:07:40.66 By the way he was the one who wanted to defeat Jesus 00:07:40.69\00:07:44.38 at the beginning of his ministry. 00:07:44.41\00:07:46.52 So Jesus is baptized that glorious event, 00:07:46.55\00:07:50.13 the Father speaks from heaven. 00:07:50.16\00:07:51.87 Now He is at the other extreme, famished and hungry 00:07:51.90\00:07:55.97 and the devil comes to attack Him 00:07:56.00\00:07:57.37 when He is most vulnerable. 00:07:57.40\00:07:58.77 Actually in the book 'Desire of Ages' 00:07:58.80\00:08:01.75 the book that you referred already page 114, 00:08:01.78\00:08:05.42 there is something very interesting if you read 00:08:05.45\00:08:07.24 the Jesus went to the wilderness to be alone. 00:08:07.27\00:08:10.63 He wanted now--you know when we see 00:08:10.66\00:08:13.07 about any great man in the Bible 00:08:13.10\00:08:15.83 before they went to that ministry 00:08:15.86\00:08:17.54 that God appointed them to do. 00:08:17.57\00:08:19.28 First they would go to some place 00:08:19.31\00:08:20.90 to prepare themselves with God, 00:08:20.93\00:08:22.94 that's what Jesus did He went there to the wilderness. 00:08:22.97\00:08:25.78 So Jesus went there to contemplate His mission 00:08:25.81\00:08:28.35 and work by fasting and prayer, 00:08:28.38\00:08:31.31 He was to brace Himself for the blood stained path, 00:08:31.34\00:08:34.71 He must travel. 00:08:34.74\00:08:36.11 But now the sentence is, but Satan knew, 00:08:36.14\00:08:39.46 that the Savior had gone into the wilderness 00:08:39.49\00:08:42.37 and he thought this to be best time to approach Him. 00:08:42.40\00:08:45.52 When did He approach Him? 00:08:45.55\00:08:47.72 When Jesus was very hungry after 40 days 00:08:47.75\00:08:50.96 He had to be very hungry. 00:08:50.99\00:08:52.77 And you know, Ranko, sometimes in my ministry 00:08:52.80\00:08:54.80 I'm sure you've run in the same question 00:08:54.83\00:08:56.28 people kind of say, well Jesus had an advantage over us. 00:08:56.31\00:09:02.07 But really He is the biggest target there's ever been. 00:09:02.10\00:09:05.07 The devil loves to defeat you and I, 00:09:05.10\00:09:06.86 but if he can get Jesus to fail 00:09:06.89\00:09:08.71 and this was not charade or play or a drama, 00:09:08.74\00:09:12.25 this was the real possibility. 00:09:12.28\00:09:14.24 A real enemy, a real temptation 00:09:14.27\00:09:17.01 and a real victory that Jesus won. Yes. 00:09:17.04\00:09:19.79 We're not playing here games. 00:09:19.82\00:09:22.33 It was something real that happen, 00:09:22.36\00:09:24.52 Jesus confronted the real Satan there in the wilderness. 00:09:24.55\00:09:27.56 I mean can you imagine two of them 00:09:27.59\00:09:28.96 they knew each other from the heavenly places 00:09:28.99\00:09:31.52 there from the beginning, 00:09:31.55\00:09:32.92 now there was a more decisive. 00:09:32.95\00:09:35.03 By the way, the word that is used here in Hebrew 00:09:35.06\00:09:38.97 that Satan came to tempt Jesus is the same word perazzo, 00:09:39.00\00:09:45.00 that is used in the gospel of Luke 00:09:45.03\00:09:47.61 with the reference to the Garden of Gethsemane 00:09:47.64\00:09:50.52 and Jesus said, the time has come 00:09:50.55\00:09:52.12 for Son of Man to be tempted. 00:09:52.15\00:09:54.72 He's telling us you see so many times 00:09:54.75\00:09:56.16 we are talking of Garden of Gethsemane, 00:09:56.19\00:09:58.30 how Jesus was tempted. 00:09:58.33\00:09:59.71 And actually the destiny of all human beings 00:09:59.74\00:10:02.85 were at stake there in Garden of Gethsemane. 00:10:02.88\00:10:04.94 By the way, what happen here in the wilderness, 00:10:04.97\00:10:07.99 it's equal to the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:10:08.02\00:10:10.83 Actually it was the decisive point you see, 00:10:10.86\00:10:13.90 at the baptism the Father make the announcement 00:10:13.93\00:10:17.18 this is My Son. 00:10:17.21\00:10:19.25 Now the Sonship of Jesus had to be tempted. 00:10:19.28\00:10:22.30 Would Jesus use what He had as the Son of God? 00:10:22.33\00:10:28.93 Would He use that for Himself 00:10:28.96\00:10:32.04 for His own advantage when He needed-- 00:10:32.07\00:10:34.87 Let's make true we're not missing the question. 00:10:34.90\00:10:37.30 The temptations deal them with Jesus methods, 00:10:37.33\00:10:40.93 His use of His identity and who He is 00:10:40.96\00:10:43.75 and His power in His ministry. 00:10:43.78\00:10:46.16 According to Philippians okay, 00:10:46.19\00:10:49.23 Jesus had to empty Himself 00:10:49.26\00:10:50.97 of all divine prerogatives and privileges He had. 00:10:51.00\00:10:53.40 He had to become as ordinary human beings 00:10:53.43\00:10:56.43 to show us that the victory over sin is possible, 00:10:56.46\00:11:00.31 and how the victory over sin is possible. 00:11:00.34\00:11:03.80 So He came to human experience to become as one of us. 00:11:03.83\00:11:09.18 As a man living in this life 00:11:09.21\00:11:12.31 He had to depend on the divine assistance 00:11:12.34\00:11:16.13 and help as every ordinary being. 00:11:16.16\00:11:18.85 When He was hungry, He had to go through our experience. 00:11:18.88\00:11:22.46 He couldn't make a miracle to feed Himself. 00:11:22.49\00:11:25.91 If He used His divine prerogatives 00:11:25.94\00:11:29.09 in anyway for Himself, 00:11:29.12\00:11:30.59 His mission would fail and Satan knew it, 00:11:30.62\00:11:32.74 that's why he came to tempt Him there. 00:11:32.77\00:11:34.14 So first temptation deals with, 00:11:34.17\00:11:36.40 Jesus will You use Your powers for Your own benefit. 00:11:36.43\00:11:40.42 Well, Glenn, can I ask you something? 00:11:40.45\00:11:42.06 The first temptation of Jesus is the reference to food 00:11:42.09\00:11:45.87 is there something that comes to our mind 00:11:45.90\00:11:48.75 about certain temptation that comes with your food? 00:11:48.78\00:11:51.24 Aren't these the essential issues? 00:11:51.27\00:11:53.74 Actually it's the Garden of Eden. 00:11:53.77\00:11:57.07 The way how sin came 00:11:57.10\00:11:58.47 in this world came through forth. 00:11:58.50\00:12:01.82 But I'd like us Glenn to go to something else. 00:12:01.85\00:12:05.57 When we read the Book of Hebrews 00:12:05.60\00:12:07.02 and it's in close relationships with Matthew Chapter 4 00:12:07.05\00:12:11.67 and it tell us that Jesus when He came down to this earth, 00:12:11.70\00:12:16.59 He was tempted with every aspect of sin as we are, 00:12:16.62\00:12:21.23 but He did not commit sin. 00:12:21.26\00:12:23.00 And so many times I meet Christians 00:12:23.03\00:12:25.86 and when they read these texts, 00:12:25.89\00:12:28.06 they think that Jesus had to be tempted 00:12:28.09\00:12:32.21 in every detail of sin. 00:12:32.24\00:12:34.72 I don't need to remind our viewers 00:12:34.75\00:12:37.39 that Jesus was not tempted with reference to drugs, 00:12:37.42\00:12:41.10 watching porno, internet or movies etcetera that. 00:12:41.13\00:12:45.27 Then what is the meaning of this? 00:12:45.30\00:12:47.94 Actually the first temptations of Jesus 00:12:47.97\00:12:51.83 are very instructive to this point. 00:12:51.86\00:12:54.74 First we have to ask our self that question, 00:12:54.77\00:12:57.35 what are those temptations? 00:12:57.38\00:12:58.99 How does the Bible define sin? 00:12:59.02\00:13:01.13 I would like us, Glenn, first to go to one probably 00:13:01.16\00:13:04.75 crucial Biblical text to explain us how temptations, 00:13:04.78\00:13:08.94 how--actually we are tempted. 00:13:08.97\00:13:10.64 What is the nature of that temptation 00:13:10.67\00:13:12.43 and what is actually the concept of sin? 00:13:12.46\00:13:14.91 It's First John 2:16. Okay, First John 2:16. Yes. 00:13:14.94\00:13:20.61 And we're looking now at the issues, 00:13:20.64\00:13:23.09 the categories and the issues-- 00:13:23.12\00:13:24.49 Categories of sin. Okay. 00:13:24.52\00:13:25.89 In order to understand what is in Matthew Chapter 4. 00:13:25.92\00:13:27.41 "For all that is in the world.'' 00:13:27.44\00:13:29.42 He's describing wilderness now. 00:13:29.45\00:13:31.75 "Lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, 00:13:31.78\00:13:35.08 and the pride of life 00:13:35.11\00:13:36.48 is not of the Father but is of the world." 00:13:36.51\00:13:37.88 So three things it says, lust of the flesh, 00:13:37.91\00:13:41.43 lust of the eyes, and the pride of life 00:13:41.46\00:13:42.95 is not of the Father but is of the world. 00:13:42.98\00:13:44.92 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; 00:13:44.95\00:13:47.06 but he who does the will of God abides forever." 00:13:47.09\00:13:48.86 So actually, all the sin condition 00:13:48.89\00:13:50.63 that human beings can summarize in these three ways. 00:13:50.66\00:13:54.72 It has to do with our eyes, lust of the eyes, 00:13:54.75\00:13:57.46 it has to do with our flesh and with the pride of life. 00:13:57.49\00:14:01.60 By the way, it is through all these that we are tempted. 00:14:01.63\00:14:06.11 You see these are three major temptations. 00:14:06.14\00:14:08.71 All other temptations at the subgroups 00:14:08.74\00:14:12.86 of this doesn't make sense. Yes. 00:14:12.89\00:14:15.18 Everything is result of the obvious. 00:14:15.21\00:14:18.64 You're also suggesting here that Jesus is in the wilderness, 00:14:18.67\00:14:22.11 but back then there was an issue in a garden 00:14:22.14\00:14:25.63 and we want to come to that in just a moment. 00:14:25.66\00:14:27.73 So we're gonna take a break right here. 00:14:27.76\00:14:29.18 We're gonna go back and look at some of the other temptations 00:14:29.21\00:14:31.56 right after the break, we'll be right back. 00:14:31.59\00:14:33.24
