Hi, I'm Glenn Russell. 00:00:21.91\00:00:23.42 Welcome to another in the series of Books of the Book. 00:00:23.43\00:00:27.67 This is a series exploring the gospel according to Matthew. 00:00:27.68\00:00:31.42 I like you to meet our guest teacher, Dr. Ranko Stefanovic. 00:00:31.43\00:00:34.55 Ranko, welcome, glad to have you back again. 00:00:34.56\00:00:36.96 This is another in the series. 00:00:36.97\00:00:39.14 It's been fascinating so far to 00:00:39.15\00:00:41.29 begin to get into this wonderful book. 00:00:41.30\00:00:43.42 We got more ahead. 00:00:43.43\00:00:45.39 Welcome, glad to have you with us. 00:00:45.40\00:00:47.21 Glenn, it's so nice. 00:00:47.22\00:00:49.03 We were in the same department as teachers, 00:00:49.04\00:00:50.89 we're coming for about nine years 00:00:50.90\00:00:53.32 and it's so nice now to be together here 00:00:53.33\00:00:56.04 and open the word of God. 00:00:56.05\00:00:57.72 Now let's ask God to lead us in that process. 00:00:57.73\00:01:00.44 Let's begin with prayer. 00:01:00.45\00:01:02.46 Lord, thank You for the assurance. 00:01:02.47\00:01:04.59 Wherever two or three are gathered 00:01:04.63\00:01:07.05 You're also gathered to teach us from Your word. 00:01:07.06\00:01:10.15 We asked that Your Spirit may guide us and teach us. 00:01:10.16\00:01:12.75 In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Amen. 00:01:12.76\00:01:16.28 Ranko, we're talking about the gospel according to Matthew. 00:01:16.29\00:01:19.65 Matthew is writing to a--originally 00:01:19.66\00:01:23.99 to a predominantly Jewish audience 00:01:24.00\00:01:25.83 and he's showing that Jesus is 00:01:25.84\00:01:27.41 the fulfillment of all their hopes, 00:01:27.42\00:01:29.61 all their wishes, all their dreams. 00:01:29.62\00:01:32.01 Just as we would say today, 00:01:32.02\00:01:33.35 Jesus is the fulfillment of all that we could wish for. 00:01:33.36\00:01:36.80 But more than that, he's showing us 00:01:36.81\00:01:38.24 that Jesus has a particular role, 00:01:38.25\00:01:40.59 has an identity as one from the Father, 00:01:40.60\00:01:43.90 and now we've moved through Chapter one 00:01:43.91\00:01:47.01 with the genealogy of Chapter two 00:01:47.02\00:01:48.89 with his birth and now where are we going this time? 00:01:48.90\00:01:52.16 Glenn, I think that it is very important 00:01:53.21\00:01:56.07 to underscore something is. 00:01:56.08\00:01:58.06 You see the gospel of Matthew 00:01:58.07\00:01:59.89 was originally written to certain people 00:01:59.90\00:02:04.46 who were of Jewish background. 00:02:04.47\00:02:07.23 So the language of the gospel of 00:02:07.24\00:02:08.74 Matthew appealed to them. 00:02:08.75\00:02:11.70 And this, similar could be said about 00:02:11.71\00:02:14.98 every book of the Bible. 00:02:14.99\00:02:16.50 But, even though the Bible was written to certain people, 00:02:16.51\00:02:19.99 it was not written only for them, 00:02:20.00\00:02:22.48 it was written for all people 00:02:22.49\00:02:24.24 including us who lived there. 00:02:24.25\00:02:25.91 This is very, very important. 00:02:25.92\00:02:28.19 So in order to understand how that Bible 00:02:28.20\00:02:31.00 speaks to us today, first we have to understand 00:02:31.01\00:02:33.19 the language, the issues 00:02:33.20\00:02:36.14 that the book address to the original readers, 00:02:36.15\00:02:38.65 and then it replied the message to us today. 00:02:38.66\00:02:41.10 So there is ancient and yet a contemporary meaning. 00:02:41.11\00:02:44.82 It's timeless, but it's also timely, 00:02:44.83\00:02:46.89 it has a place and time. 00:02:46.90\00:02:48.72 All right, what are we going to explore this time? 00:02:48.73\00:02:50.93 You see so far, we saw that Jesus came, 00:02:50.94\00:02:54.51 what genealogy couldn't do, 00:02:54.52\00:02:56.04 Jesus came to save His people from their sins. 00:02:56.05\00:02:58.68 We saw last time how He came. 00:02:58.69\00:03:01.21 He was born as a baby in Bethlehem. 00:03:01.22\00:03:04.15 Now the time has come for Jesus 00:03:04.16\00:03:07.65 to begin his public, public ministry. 00:03:07.66\00:03:11.15 But there was somebody who came to announce 00:03:11.16\00:03:14.79 the coming of the Messiah. 00:03:14.80\00:03:16.73 The name of that person is John the Baptist. 00:03:16.74\00:03:19.64 This is actually what we read in Matthew Chapter 3. 00:03:19.65\00:03:23.58 So Glenn, I would really like to ask you, 00:03:23.59\00:03:26.71 if you can read Chapter 3, verses 1 to 6 00:03:26.72\00:03:30.69 and may be in sentence were to tell us 00:03:30.70\00:03:32.59 what we have in the rest up to verse 5. 00:03:32.60\00:03:36.15 All right, but first I'd like to 00:03:36.16\00:03:37.39 ask you very briefly a question. 00:03:37.40\00:03:39.39 Many people would wonder, how come there's not much 00:03:39.40\00:03:41.76 about Jesus early life, His years as a teenager, 00:03:41.77\00:03:45.86 young adult, goes from his birth to his ministry 00:03:45.87\00:03:48.53 with John and started there, why? 00:03:48.54\00:03:51.72 Because the Bible does not concern everything about Jesus. 00:03:51.73\00:03:55.75 What the Bible concern is, why Jesus came? 00:03:55.76\00:03:58.85 How He came? 00:03:58.86\00:04:00.37 See the reason that we read about His birth 00:04:00.38\00:04:02.25 is to understand that Jesus didn't came like 00:04:02.26\00:04:05.42 an ordinary human being, born as a result of 00:04:05.43\00:04:08.27 sexual relationships between a male and female. 00:04:08.28\00:04:12.02 Actually, He came because 00:04:12.03\00:04:13.86 the Holy Spirit made the inception, etc. 00:04:13.87\00:04:18.45 And now we see how He came 00:04:18.46\00:04:20.41 to save His people with climax to the cross. 00:04:20.42\00:04:23.80 So, the Bible is concerned of this. 00:04:23.81\00:04:25.56 Unfortunately, we would like to ask 00:04:25.57\00:04:27.30 many questions about Jesus and the Bible is quiet, 00:04:27.31\00:04:29.97 and that's the reason why in the second century those 00:04:29.98\00:04:33.03 apocryphal gospels appear, trying to fill that gap. 00:04:33.04\00:04:36.52 And fortunately, those things are not in the Bible. 00:04:36.53\00:04:38.61 Something will wait for heaven, won't we. Yes, yes. 00:04:38.62\00:04:40.98 Now you said something about some silence 00:04:40.99\00:04:43.75 and there has been some silence for a period of centuries. 00:04:43.76\00:04:48.02 Yeah. Okay. 00:04:48.03\00:04:49.56 You would like us to go now to John Chapter 3. 00:04:49.57\00:04:51.47 3:1, 2, 2-6. All right. 00:04:51.48\00:04:55.06 In those days John the Baptist came preaching 00:04:55.07\00:04:57.26 in the wilderness of Judea and saying, 00:04:57.27\00:04:59.79 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 00:04:59.82\00:05:03.02 For this is He who is spoken of by the prophet Isaiah saying, 00:05:03.03\00:05:06.98 'the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 00:05:06.99\00:05:09.69 prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.' 00:05:09.70\00:05:12.62 "Now John Himself was clothed in camel's hair 00:05:13.84\00:05:16.52 with a leather belt around his waist, 00:05:16.53\00:05:18.30 and his food was locusts and wild honey. 00:05:18.31\00:05:20.88 Then Jews from all Judea 00:05:20.89\00:05:22.57 and all the region around the Jordan 00:05:22.58\00:05:25.19 went out to Him and were baptized by Him 00:05:25.20\00:05:28.23 in the Jordan, confessing their sins. 00:05:28.24\00:05:31.69 But when he saw many of the Pharisees 00:05:31.70\00:05:33.23 and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, 00:05:33.24\00:05:36.16 "brood of vipers, who warned you 00:05:36.17\00:05:37.83 to flee from the wrath to come? 00:05:37.84\00:05:39.81 Therefore bear fruit worthy of repentance 00:05:39.82\00:05:42.78 and do not say to yourselves, we have Abraham as our father, 00:05:42.79\00:05:46.04 for I say to you that God is able to 00:05:46.05\00:05:48.50 raise up children to Abraham from these very stones." 00:05:48.51\00:05:51.95 Yes. Quite a character. 00:05:51.96\00:05:54.73 So a very unusual person appeared, 00:05:54.74\00:05:57.48 by the way this very unusual person, 00:05:57.49\00:06:00.00 unknown person in the gospel of Matthew. 00:06:00.01\00:06:02.21 We want to learn more about that person, 00:06:02.22\00:06:04.11 we have to read those at the gospel of Luke. 00:06:04.12\00:06:06.23 He was actually a relative of Jesus. 00:06:07.34\00:06:10.85 Was it common in this time period for God 00:06:10.86\00:06:13.43 to be sending prophets, Ranko? 00:06:13.44\00:06:15.54 See the problem is when we read 00:06:15.55\00:06:19.09 the Jewish writings from the time previous to-- 00:06:19.10\00:06:24.65 prior to this period we read that 00:06:24.66\00:06:27.23 they said this is the time of Malachi. 00:06:27.24\00:06:30.53 They said, there has not been a prophet among us. 00:06:30.54\00:06:34.74 The Jews believe strongly we have so many 00:06:34.75\00:06:39.91 indications in our writings that actually 00:06:39.92\00:06:42.37 the last prophet, the prophetic voice, 00:06:42.38\00:06:44.61 the last time was called prophet Malachi. 00:06:44.62\00:06:46.83 So can you imagine now a person appeared 00:06:46.84\00:06:49.66 dressed as the Old Testament prophets. 00:06:49.67\00:06:52.88 His message that he started preaching 00:06:52.89\00:06:55.24 was the message of the Old Testament prophets 00:06:55.25\00:06:58.38 and the results were the results 00:06:58.39\00:07:00.29 of the Old Testament prophets, 00:07:00.30\00:07:01.71 immediately people recognized 00:07:01.72\00:07:04.57 that God once again visited his people. 00:07:04.58\00:07:08.34 So there's a continuity and God is at work again. 00:07:08.35\00:07:11.12 Yes. Because something has happened. 00:07:11.13\00:07:13.84 But you see the question is why John the Baptist, 00:07:13.85\00:07:17.07 of course, we always say, 00:07:17.08\00:07:18.64 he came to prepare the way for the Messiah. 00:07:18.65\00:07:21.49 But there is one expression, 00:07:21.50\00:07:23.45 actually metaphorical section, 00:07:23.46\00:07:25.89 the John, he use when people ask him, who are you? 00:07:25.90\00:07:30.86 Actually, this is another quotation 00:07:30.87\00:07:33.65 from the Old Testament prophecies. 00:07:33.66\00:07:35.27 This time from the book of Isaiah. 00:07:35.28\00:07:37.56 He says, "the voice of the one crying 00:07:37.57\00:07:40.68 in the wilderness make ready 00:07:40.69\00:07:42.84 the way of the Lord, make his path straight." 00:07:42.85\00:07:46.38 And I know, the casual readers 00:07:46.39\00:07:48.48 they don't see anything significant, 00:07:48.49\00:07:50.40 but if we lived in the first century and those ancient times, 00:07:50.41\00:07:55.02 we would easily catch the significance of this statement. 00:07:56.56\00:08:00.39 By the way I'm coming from the part of the world 00:08:00.40\00:08:03.59 that it's border between the west and the east. 00:08:03.60\00:08:08.01 So I lived among the people with that eastern mentality 00:08:08.02\00:08:11.50 and I myself, I lived within that mentality. 00:08:11.51\00:08:14.85 Actually I was in one part of the world, 00:08:14.86\00:08:17.53 I lived for about two years and my brother took me 00:08:17.54\00:08:20.40 to one place to see something. 00:08:20.41\00:08:23.18 We were driving for about, let's say about 10 miles. 00:08:23.19\00:08:26.95 It was a fantastic road, but not maintained. 00:08:26.96\00:08:30.42 There was a lot of grass 00:08:30.43\00:08:31.86 and I said to my brother, there is no single car. 00:08:31.87\00:08:34.49 He said, just wait you will see it. 00:08:34.50\00:08:36.13 We came to the end of that road beautiful pavement, etc. 00:08:36.14\00:08:40.71 and there was a house, it was a mansion. 00:08:40.72\00:08:42.91 Beautiful, then there nobody lived there. 00:08:44.05\00:08:47.50 Some windows were broken, etc., 00:08:47.51\00:08:50.21 so I said, what's going on? 00:08:50.22\00:08:52.59 This road, this road just led only 00:08:52.60\00:08:54.25 to this house, there's nothing else. 00:08:54.26\00:08:56.08 He said, you know, when the US President 00:08:56.09\00:08:58.42 came to visit here this country, this road was built for him 00:08:58.43\00:09:02.45 and this mansion was built for him. 00:09:02.46\00:09:05.69 So when he left, it was abandoned, 00:09:05.70\00:09:08.46 nobody lived there and suddenly this text came to me. 00:09:08.47\00:09:11.80 You see in ancient times when the king, 00:09:11.81\00:09:14.06 when the ruler would go to visit 00:09:14.07\00:09:16.20 a part of his kingdom what did people do? 00:09:16.21\00:09:18.75 They actually fixed the roads. 00:09:18.76\00:09:21.43 There are some roads they were very, you know, curved, etc. 00:09:21.44\00:09:24.49 They tried to make it straight. 00:09:24.50\00:09:26.19 They provided good pavement, why? 00:09:26.20\00:09:28.66 Because the king is coming. 00:09:28.67\00:09:30.83 When the king is coming, you've to fix the road 00:09:30.84\00:09:33.59 so that the king has safe, you know, 00:09:33.60\00:09:36.49 journey and travel to that part of his kingdom. 00:09:36.50\00:09:40.34 Actually, the saying from the prophet Isaiah, 00:09:40.35\00:09:44.55 that Matthew inspired by the Holy Spirit 00:09:44.56\00:09:47.53 implies to John Baptist was exactly there 00:09:47.54\00:09:50.99 by keeping in mind that ancient custom 00:09:51.00\00:09:54.89 that is used here metaphorically. 00:09:54.90\00:09:56.49 The messiah is coming and the role of John 00:09:56.50\00:09:59.91 the Baptist was actually to fix, 00:09:59.92\00:10:02.44 to prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah. 00:10:02.45\00:10:06.09 All right, so the idea of his preparatory role, 00:10:06.10\00:10:09.62 of course that means if somebody 00:10:09.63\00:10:10.91 is coming after, if you're preparing. 00:10:10.92\00:10:12.67 You're preparing for something, 00:10:12.68\00:10:14.04 but let's explore a little bit more 00:10:14.05\00:10:15.76 about this role of John the Baptist. 00:10:15.77\00:10:18.41 He's dressed a certain way, 00:10:18.42\00:10:19.82 he's eating certain food, he has a certain message. 00:10:19.83\00:10:23.04 Let's explore that little bit more, Ranko. 00:10:23.05\00:10:25.10 John appeared evidently like 00:10:28.23\00:10:33.84 Prophet Elijah of the Old Testament. 00:10:33.85\00:10:36.91 You know that Elijah he lived some 00:10:36.92\00:10:39.15 isolated place there, etc., 00:10:39.16\00:10:41.94 and we have in the conclusion 00:10:41.95\00:10:45.18 of the Hebrew Scriptures, The Book of Malachi. 00:10:45.19\00:10:49.10 You know, the last verse of our Masoretic 00:10:49.11\00:10:54.05 text of the Old Testament is that before 00:10:54.06\00:10:57.38 the terrible day of the Lord comes, 00:10:59.08\00:11:01.17 God will send Mosses and Elijah 00:11:01.18\00:11:04.39 and they will turn the hearts of 00:11:04.40\00:11:05.85 parents, fathers, toward their sons, 00:11:05.86\00:11:08.68 and sons with their fathers. 00:11:08.69\00:11:10.91 So the Jewish people could easily recognize 00:11:10.92\00:11:15.40 in the coming of John the Baptist, 00:11:15.41\00:11:18.68 in the message that He preached. 00:11:18.69\00:11:20.75 The fulfillment of this Old Testament prophecy 00:11:20.76\00:11:24.25 and that's why you have a lot of people 00:11:24.26\00:11:28.38 running there to listen to John Baptist message. 00:11:28.39\00:11:30.94 So there is a tremendous surge of expectation. 00:11:30.95\00:11:34.90 What they've been hoping for, 00:11:34.91\00:11:36.23 longing for, this Messiah, his deliver. 00:11:36.24\00:11:40.04 Now something is happening 00:11:40.05\00:11:41.60 is giving him idea He's coming soon. 00:11:41.61\00:11:43.69 Actually, when you see the context of 00:11:43.70\00:11:46.59 John the Baptist message, it's actually 00:11:46.60\00:11:49.38 the content of Elijah's message. 00:11:49.39\00:11:52.26 I mean it's really cut to the truth. 00:11:52.27\00:11:54.48 What is the key word of John the Baptist message? 00:11:54.49\00:11:57.76 Said, repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 00:11:57.77\00:12:03.82 I know Christians are using very often the word repent. 00:12:03.83\00:12:09.20 And we have all kind of ideas 00:12:09.21\00:12:11.06 and so many times people are asking me, 00:12:11.07\00:12:12.89 what is the meaning of repentance? 00:12:12.90\00:12:14.62 Is that repentance a genuine repentance, 00:12:14.63\00:12:16.97 un-genuine repentance, so called repentance? 00:12:16.98\00:12:19.47 You know people have, we've to understand 00:12:19.48\00:12:21.66 that Hebrew word shuv simply means turn around. 00:12:21.67\00:12:27.47 A person is going in certain direction 00:12:28.80\00:12:32.65 like in the parable of the prodigal son. 00:12:32.66\00:12:35.93 And the person comes to his senses 00:12:35.94\00:12:38.75 and the person makes turn around 00:12:38.76\00:12:42.03 and going back to God, that's what repentance. 00:12:42.04\00:12:43.90 So it's a U-turn and about phase. 00:12:43.91\00:12:45.97 In the New Testament, metanoia, 00:12:45.98\00:12:48.93 it means to change your mind, 00:12:48.94\00:12:50.92 you follow after your mind changed. 00:12:50.93\00:12:52.70 This is in the prodigal son. 00:12:52.71\00:12:53.92 He came to his senses and he said 00:12:53.93\00:12:57.05 I'm going back to my Father. 00:12:57.06\00:12:59.53 This is what repentance is. 00:12:59.54\00:13:00.99 So, John the Baptist message was, 00:13:01.00\00:13:03.60 you are away from God. 00:13:03.61\00:13:06.15 You're disobedient to God. 00:13:06.16\00:13:07.81 You see they were not -- 00:13:07.85\00:13:09.97 they once welcomed the messiah, etc. 00:13:09.98\00:13:12.21 So, John the Baptist said you have to make 00:13:12.22\00:13:14.34 that significant around in your life. 00:13:14.35\00:13:17.16 You've to come back to God and that's how 00:13:17.17\00:13:20.17 the coming of the messiah will be meaningful to you. 00:13:20.18\00:13:23.57 And so that whole message is summed up in that second verse, 00:13:23.58\00:13:26.44 "repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 00:13:26.45\00:13:29.86 It was calling for a radical change of Abraham. 00:13:29.87\00:13:32.65 They expected others to repent, 00:13:32.66\00:13:34.51 but this is a message you need to repent. 00:13:35.89\00:13:39.41 And then, and then, if you see the rest, 00:13:39.42\00:13:42.63 all kind of people were coming to listen 00:13:42.64\00:13:45.32 to John the Baptist, but his message was, 00:13:45.33\00:13:49.05 turn around in your relationship with God, 00:13:49.06\00:13:52.36 look into the world in completely different way. 00:13:52.37\00:13:55.31 Change the course of your action 00:13:55.32\00:13:57.68 and try to correct the things that you have done in the past. 00:13:57.69\00:14:00.44 That was actually the message of John the Baptist. 00:14:00.45\00:14:02.27 And we're gonna get much more into 00:14:03.53\00:14:04.72 the meaning of repentance right after our break. 00:14:04.73\00:14:06.96
