We are exploring the birth of Jesus 00:00:01.01\00:00:03.30 in the record of Book of Matthew. 00:00:03.31\00:00:05.25 We have noticed Mary's response 00:00:05.26\00:00:07.53 and Joseph's response of faith and obedience. 00:00:07.54\00:00:10.25 Now we are entering into Chapter 2 and 00:00:10.26\00:00:13.16 we are seeing these, these Arab philosophers 00:00:13.17\00:00:15.86 from the East who are coming, 00:00:15.87\00:00:17.63 they've come to Jerusalem, Ranko. 00:00:17.64\00:00:19.93 Why do they go there? And what are they looking for? 00:00:19.94\00:00:22.74 What's their question they are seeking after God? 00:00:22.75\00:00:24.72 You know, usually when Bible readers 00:00:24.73\00:00:28.09 they read this event, they think that 00:00:28.10\00:00:30.32 we have here a story that does not fit to reality. 00:00:30.33\00:00:33.34 They've said, you know, Judea was a small country 00:00:33.35\00:00:35.95 and the birth of one child that later 00:00:35.96\00:00:38.38 became the leader, you know Gudhrabai, 00:00:38.39\00:00:40.70 does not fit to reality. 00:00:40.71\00:00:42.13 I just want to read something 00:00:42.14\00:00:44.60 to the readers is, you know, 00:00:44.61\00:00:46.82 Jesus died somewhere in the year 33, 00:00:46.83\00:00:50.19 up to time you know, 00:00:50.20\00:00:52.30 31 okay. 31, yeah. 00:00:52.31\00:00:55.28 I would like something we have from 00:00:55.29\00:00:57.66 two Roman historians, one was Tacitus who lived 00:00:57.67\00:01:01.56 from 60 AD to 120 and another one was 00:01:01.57\00:01:05.04 Suetonius from 75 to 160 00:01:05.05\00:01:07.83 to telling us something very significant. 00:01:07.84\00:01:09.79 They are Roman historians, 00:01:09.80\00:01:11.43 have nothing to do with Jewish race. 00:01:11.44\00:01:13.66 They said there was a firm persuasion 00:01:13.67\00:01:16.53 that at this very time, the East was to grow 00:01:16.54\00:01:20.44 powerful and the rulers coming from Judea were 00:01:20.45\00:01:23.88 to acquire universal empire. 00:01:23.89\00:01:26.15 Suetonius, there had spread over all the Orient an old 00:01:26.16\00:01:31.51 and established belief, it was faith at that time 00:01:31.52\00:01:34.60 for men coming from Judaea to rule the world. 00:01:34.61\00:01:37.80 Scripture elsewhere it says, in the fullness of time, 00:01:37.81\00:01:40.20 that's the right time there is an expectation. 00:01:40.21\00:01:42.27 Believe me, notice of the coming of the Messiah 00:01:42.28\00:01:46.59 was not to just confine to Judea. 00:01:46.60\00:01:48.88 The Romans were very much familiar, through out 00:01:48.89\00:01:51.79 the Roman Empire they were very much familiar 00:01:51.80\00:01:54.41 about what the Jewish people were expecting to come 00:01:54.42\00:01:57.55 to come there and to happen in Judea. 00:01:57.56\00:01:59.99 There's an expectancy, there is a hope. 00:02:00.00\00:02:02.10 Yeah, So these magi, they saw the star, 00:02:02.11\00:02:06.58 but they saw did also the Hebrew Scriptures. 00:02:06.59\00:02:11.44 May I just pause there for a moment, because, 00:02:11.45\00:02:14.00 usually we're so familiar with the Christians, 00:02:14.01\00:02:16.93 Christmas story because of the pageants we see 00:02:16.94\00:02:19.30 and the shepherds and the wise men come at about 00:02:19.31\00:02:22.16 the same time. Yeah. 00:02:22.17\00:02:23.25 There's a difference in time there. 00:02:23.26\00:02:25.79 Actually we must say that, between verse 25 of 00:02:25.80\00:02:31.02 Chapter 1 and what happens in Chapter 2 probably weeks, 00:02:31.03\00:02:35.79 it could be even month that they passed. 00:02:35.80\00:02:38.28 How do you know that? Probably viewers 00:02:38.29\00:02:40.31 would like to know that. 00:02:40.32\00:02:41.50 Number one is we read when the magis 00:02:41.51\00:02:45.49 they came there to Bethlehem, where did they 00:02:45.50\00:02:48.05 find Joseph and Mary? Not in a stable. 00:02:48.06\00:02:52.06 They found in a house, but in Gospel of Luke, Jesus 00:02:52.07\00:02:54.88 was not born in a house, He was born in the stable. 00:02:54.89\00:02:57.52 So evidently by that time, Joseph and Mary, 00:02:57.53\00:02:59.90 moved to a house where they lived. 00:02:59.91\00:03:01.76 And they came because they had seen the star. 00:03:01.77\00:03:04.22 It would take sometime to come to travel 00:03:04.23\00:03:06.78 Second thing is, in the conclusion of Chapter 2, 00:03:06.79\00:03:09.38 when Herod found out from magis about 00:03:09.39\00:03:14.81 the birth of the new king, he decided to kill 00:03:14.82\00:03:18.90 all children up to two years of age. 00:03:18.91\00:03:21.01 Why up to two years of age? He knew that the child was 00:03:21.02\00:03:24.50 born just few days before or may be week. 00:03:24.51\00:03:28.32 Because it said everyone week or two 00:03:28.33\00:03:29.67 Or may be that night that the boy was born. 00:03:29.68\00:03:32.67 Why would he kill all those children up to 00:03:32.68\00:03:34.86 two years of age? But second thing is 00:03:34.87\00:03:36.94 in Gospel of Luke, when Joseph and Mary came there 00:03:36.95\00:03:41.16 to Jerusalem with Jesus, they were so poor, 00:03:41.17\00:03:46.04 they could not offer a lamb there as a sacrifice. 00:03:46.05\00:03:49.97 They, you know, as a poor people 00:03:49.98\00:03:51.69 they were two births there. 00:03:51.70\00:03:53.77 If really the magi they came prior to that, 00:03:53.78\00:03:57.92 they would be very rich people with those gifts. 00:03:57.93\00:04:00.52 So evidently all the evidences that 00:04:00.53\00:04:02.96 indicate to us that the magi came 00:04:02.97\00:04:05.44 may be weeks after that. 00:04:05.45\00:04:07.12 Again we see God's mercy, Jesus has come, 00:04:07.13\00:04:10.46 the shepherds have responded. 00:04:10.47\00:04:12.55 You'd think the nation would be responding. 00:04:12.56\00:04:15.45 Do we see a nation that's so glad their hope 00:04:15.46\00:04:18.08 is finally fulfilled? The people are curious 00:04:18.09\00:04:21.06 and they are rushing to learn more. 00:04:21.07\00:04:22.59 So can you imagine the Messiah was born. 00:04:22.60\00:04:25.63 His people were waiting for His coming. 00:04:25.64\00:04:29.81 He came to save them from their sins 00:04:29.82\00:04:32.12 and nobody was waiting for Him. 00:04:32.13\00:04:35.15 Who were those in the Gospel of Matthew that 00:04:35.16\00:04:37.39 were waiting for him, actually the Gentiles, 00:04:37.40\00:04:40.28 not only that they waited, that they were in Jerusalem, 00:04:40.29\00:04:43.27 they have to travel several weeks from Mesopotamia 00:04:43.28\00:04:46.77 to come there to welcome the new born king. 00:04:46.78\00:04:50.41 When the seekers come, they come to Jerusalem, 00:04:50.42\00:04:53.08 who did they see and what did they find out? 00:04:53.09\00:04:54.96 Yeah, they saw the Scribes, they saw the people 00:04:54.97\00:04:57.40 but they saw such a great in difference. 00:04:57.41\00:04:59.50 I want just go back to what you said last time, 00:04:59.51\00:05:02.04 the people with genealogy. 00:05:02.05\00:05:03.36 They go to those people with genealogy. 00:05:03.37\00:05:06.00 Yes, He came to save them. 00:05:06.01\00:05:07.05 Now did the Priests and Rabbis have the facts, 00:05:07.06\00:05:10.56 did they have the truth, did they have the knowledge? 00:05:10.57\00:05:12.71 Yes, actually when the question was, 00:05:12.72\00:05:17.38 where will the Messiah be born? 00:05:17.39\00:05:20.49 They said in Bethlehem. They knew it. 00:05:20.50\00:05:23.38 Actually we have all the evidences that 00:05:23.39\00:05:25.28 the Jewish people based from Daniel Chapter 9, 00:05:25.29\00:05:28.05 they knew approximate the time 00:05:28.06\00:05:30.04 when the Messiah would be born. 00:05:30.05\00:05:31.56 Can you ever think but they were not waiting for Him. 00:05:31.57\00:05:33.99 There is a warning for us, isn't it? 00:05:34.00\00:05:35.47 Oh yeah. I'm so many times afraid 00:05:35.48\00:05:38.81 when we started the Bible, we know 00:05:38.82\00:05:40.99 what the future will bring. 00:05:41.00\00:05:42.13 I'm afraid that the future can happen, 00:05:42.14\00:05:44.71 but it will not fit to my expectations. 00:05:44.72\00:05:48.24 How it's important to study the Bible as it is, 00:05:48.25\00:05:51.46 not study and bring our ideas and our concepts-- 00:05:51.47\00:05:55.12 So we can know the signs and we can know the prophecies, 00:05:55.13\00:05:58.79 but still miss the Savior. Yes. 00:05:58.80\00:06:01.45 What a tragic experience? Now, 00:06:01.46\00:06:05.06 of course Herod, gets involved in the process. 00:06:05.07\00:06:06.92 What's his concern? He is a king, 00:06:06.93\00:06:09.42 what does he care about a baby being born? 00:06:09.43\00:06:10.97 You know, the readers who lived there 00:06:10.98\00:06:13.87 in the first century, when they read all 00:06:13.88\00:06:21.03 these account of Jesus birth, 00:06:21.04\00:06:22.88 they couldn't escape something, because 00:06:22.89\00:06:25.05 Josephus who was Jewish historian, 00:06:25.06\00:06:29.47 but he became later Romans. 00:06:29.48\00:06:31.97 Actually he described that before Moses was born 00:06:31.98\00:06:36.96 that the magi they said to Pharaoh, you know, that 00:06:36.97\00:06:42.63 a leader will come and He will take your throne, 00:06:42.64\00:06:46.08 He will be threat to you and according to 00:06:46.09\00:06:48.47 the Jewish rendition is Pharaoh wanted to 00:06:48.48\00:06:50.97 kill Moses, because he was threat to his throne. 00:06:50.98\00:06:54.22 The same situation is here. 00:06:54.23\00:06:56.37 Herod was much more concerned about his throne. 00:06:56.38\00:07:00.25 Probably few words should be said about Herod. 00:07:00.26\00:07:04.59 We know that he killed his wife, his beloved wife, 00:07:04.60\00:07:09.79 that he was obsessed with her beauty 00:07:09.80\00:07:11.74 and so he killed her. 00:07:11.75\00:07:12.90 He killed his two favorite sons. 00:07:12.91\00:07:15.15 For Herod to kill several innocent children 00:07:15.16\00:07:19.89 there in Bethlehem was nothing strange, 00:07:19.90\00:07:22.68 simply to preserve his rule, his rule on the throne. 00:07:22.69\00:07:28.06 Actually the history is telling us 00:07:28.07\00:07:30.10 before Herod died, you know, that he gathered, 00:07:30.11\00:07:33.16 he assembled, all the Jewish leaders, 00:07:33.17\00:07:36.02 he put them in jail, put them on side, 00:07:36.03\00:07:37.92 and he said the moment you hear that I died 00:07:37.93\00:07:41.96 I want to kill everybody there, 00:07:41.97\00:07:43.77 crying in the country, otherwise people will 00:07:43.78\00:07:46.49 not cry when I die. 00:07:46.50\00:07:47.51 See it fits his character what he was doing 00:07:47.52\00:07:50.71 there with reference to Jesus. 00:07:50.72\00:07:52.09 I understand, there's even a saying that 00:07:52.10\00:07:53.50 "It is safer to be his dog than his family member" 00:07:53.51\00:07:56.15 because if you are a rival, he will eliminate you. 00:07:56.16\00:07:59.47 So we have here in Chapter 2, 00:07:59.48\00:08:01.21 who is the true king of Israel, 00:08:01.22\00:08:03.16 isn't that the question? 00:08:03.17\00:08:04.26 Yes. Who is the king? 00:08:04.27\00:08:05.26 Is it Herod or does God have someone else? 00:08:05.27\00:08:08.04 No, actually Herod is here as upper of God's authority. 00:08:08.05\00:08:12.52 He is the one that Satan is using to prevent God's plan, 00:08:12.53\00:08:15.88 to accomplish God's purposes on earth. 00:08:15.89\00:08:20.35 Now, Herod was very crafty about what he does. 00:08:20.36\00:08:22.93 He doesn't reveal his motivation. 00:08:22.94\00:08:26.57 He says to the wise men, 00:08:26.58\00:08:27.58 oh I want to worship him too. 00:08:27.59\00:08:28.97 But you know, there is something 00:08:28.98\00:08:33.07 so beautiful here that I cannot but to mention it, 00:08:33.08\00:08:37.04 so many times when we, situation in the world, 00:08:37.05\00:08:40.99 we wonder if God is still in control. 00:08:41.00\00:08:45.44 When we see here what's going on, 00:08:45.45\00:08:46.97 the Messiah is born and now 00:08:46.98\00:08:50.01 there is a threat to his life, even had 00:08:50.02\00:08:52.12 to flee there to Egypt. Where is God? 00:08:52.13\00:08:56.39 But believe me God is still in charge, 00:08:56.40\00:09:00.01 God is still in control. 00:09:00.02\00:09:02.42 According to Matthew, even Jesus had to 00:09:02.43\00:09:05.17 flee there to Egypt, it was 00:09:05.18\00:09:06.79 for the prophecy to be fulfilled. 00:09:06.80\00:09:08.25 Could we spend a moment, you mentioned earlier about 00:09:08.26\00:09:11.30 the gifts that these wise men bring 00:09:11.31\00:09:14.81 and we say three kings, but we don't know the number, 00:09:14.82\00:09:17.29 that's part of our stories that have developed. 00:09:17.30\00:09:19.51 But they do bring three gifts, what are they? 00:09:19.52\00:09:22.54 What could they have been used for? 00:09:22.55\00:09:24.06 How are they helpful? 00:09:24.07\00:09:25.41 Actually they were very expensive gifts and 00:09:25.42\00:09:29.72 people are trying to make different theories of gold, 00:09:29.73\00:09:34.29 frankincense and myrrh etc. 00:09:34.30\00:09:36.69 I really don't want to go with that, 00:09:36.70\00:09:38.65 sometimes it can be very, very speculative, 00:09:38.66\00:09:41.97 but really those three gifts can refer to the threefold 00:09:41.98\00:09:46.18 aspect of Jesus ministry in the office. 00:09:46.19\00:09:48.90 He's the king, He's the priest and He' a judge. 00:09:48.91\00:09:52.55 And it shows how God provides because of those 00:09:52.56\00:09:54.67 gifts become the means for them to escape to Egypt. 00:09:54.68\00:09:57.38 Can you imagine, not only the Messiah, 00:09:57.39\00:09:59.56 was not waited for in Jerusalem 00:09:59.57\00:10:02.84 by His own people, but He had to go and flee 00:10:02.85\00:10:06.34 and to find the protection in the Gentile territory 00:10:06.35\00:10:08.74 which was actually Egypt today. 00:10:08.75\00:10:10.73 What Jesus' say, but God made a provision 00:10:10.74\00:10:13.58 with the gifts of those magi, so that 00:10:13.59\00:10:17.31 Joseph and Mary could for certain period of time 00:10:17.32\00:10:20.25 live there in Egypt, in order to survive? 00:10:20.26\00:10:23.96 How God always makes provision. 00:10:23.97\00:10:26.25 I suspected you'll bring this out in future lessons 00:10:26.26\00:10:29.47 about how Jesus repeats some of the history of Israel 00:10:29.48\00:10:32.67 and correlation between those two. 00:10:32.68\00:10:35.51 Actually I would like to take one minute 00:10:35.52\00:10:37.19 to address it, because we have it here 00:10:37.20\00:10:40.48 the significance of the Old Testament 00:10:40.49\00:10:42.38 quotations in Matthew 2. 00:10:42.39\00:10:44.05 Just quickly Matthew 2:15, what do we have at 2:15. 00:10:44.06\00:10:49.07 Yes and there was. 00:10:49.08\00:10:50.83 Out of Egypt I called my son. 00:10:50.84\00:10:54.28 Then we have in 2:6, we have you, 00:10:54.29\00:10:58.75 Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, 00:10:58.76\00:11:00.30 who are not the least among the leaders of Judah, 00:11:00.31\00:11:03.64 For out of you shall come forth 00:11:03.65\00:11:05.61 a ruler who will shepherd My people Israel. 00:11:05.62\00:11:09.53 And then in verse 2:18, a voice from 00:11:09.54\00:11:12.68 Jeremiah prophecy, A voice was heard in Ramah, 00:11:12.69\00:11:16.15 weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping 00:11:16.16\00:11:18.85 for her children and she refused to be 00:11:18.86\00:11:21.38 comforted because they were no more. 00:11:21.39\00:11:23.55 By the way we know that all these are three quotations 00:11:23.56\00:11:26.93 from the Old Testament and they refer 00:11:26.94\00:11:29.25 to three greatest events in history. 00:11:29.26\00:11:33.56 Matthew 2:15 is quotation from Hosea 11:1 00:11:33.57\00:11:37.66 it refers to Exodus. 00:11:37.67\00:11:39.03 Then we have Matthew 2:6 from Micah 5:2, 00:11:39.04\00:11:43.55 it refers to the kingdom of David. 00:11:43.56\00:11:45.66 You know Bethlehem David was born. 00:11:45.67\00:11:47.25 Then we have Matthew 2:18 is quotation 00:11:47.26\00:11:50.72 from Jeremiah 31:15 its reference to the Exile. 00:11:50.73\00:11:55.14 So what is the point that we have here, 00:11:55.15\00:11:57.21 you know, Jesus came to save His people 00:11:57.22\00:12:00.23 from their sins. How? 00:12:00.24\00:12:01.51 Because he identifies Himself with them. 00:12:01.52\00:12:06.52 We saw the genealogy, the history of God's people 00:12:06.53\00:12:10.48 in the past was the history of constant failure. 00:12:10.49\00:12:13.84 But Jesus, in order to save them, 00:12:13.85\00:12:15.89 He steps into the situation where they failed, 00:12:15.90\00:12:19.29 He won the victory and that's the way 00:12:19.30\00:12:22.04 how He came to save His people from their sins. 00:12:22.05\00:12:25.61 As we conclude what should we hold on to 00:12:25.62\00:12:29.15 from this story of the birth of Jesus? 00:12:29.16\00:12:31.28 What does this say to you and to me as readers today? 00:12:31.29\00:12:35.47 So today, when we read the Gospel of Matthew, 00:12:35.48\00:12:40.51 we can learn something yes. 00:12:40.52\00:12:42.16 We saw that the Gospel of Matthew began 00:12:42.17\00:12:44.57 with rejection of Jesus by His own people 00:12:44.58\00:12:49.03 that actually He came to save. 00:12:49.04\00:12:52.25 What is that hope for me 00:12:52.26\00:12:54.57 as I read the Gospel of Matthew? 00:12:54.58\00:12:57.27 So many times I feel in my life I have constant 00:12:57.28\00:12:59.97 rejection of Jesus, but He still loves me 00:12:59.98\00:13:02.27 and He loves His own people in the past and He's ready 00:13:02.28\00:13:04.95 to save me from my own sin. What a Savior. 00:13:04.96\00:13:08.36
