Welcome back, we're exploring the genealogy of Jesus, 00:00:01.40\00:00:04.24 found in Matthew Chapter 1. 00:00:04.27\00:00:06.27 Ranko, let's go back into this a little bit further. 00:00:06.30\00:00:09.18 What else do we need to know about this genealogy, 00:00:09.21\00:00:11.22 in terms of its background, this was-- 00:00:11.25\00:00:13.82 these Old Testament echoes, that you mentioned? 00:00:13.85\00:00:15.69 Tell us little more about that. 00:00:15.72\00:00:17.17 If the intention of the Holy Spirit, 00:00:17.20\00:00:20.27 who inspired Matthew to begin His Gospel of genealogy 00:00:20.30\00:00:24.94 and put it at the very beginning, 00:00:24.97\00:00:26.53 you know, you put at the very beginning, 00:00:26.56\00:00:28.11 the things that are the most important. 00:00:28.14\00:00:30.43 That sets the tone, for the rest of the book. 00:00:30.46\00:00:34.33 Then, we really have to go to the Old Testament, 00:00:34.36\00:00:38.34 to the Book of Genesis and find out 00:00:38.37\00:00:41.03 about the meaning of genealogy, 00:00:41.06\00:00:42.56 there in order to understand the meaning of genealogy, 00:00:42.59\00:00:45.22 in Matthew Chapter 1. 00:00:45.25\00:00:46.62 So, Glenn, now you have to help me, okay. 00:00:46.65\00:00:49.25 We have in Gospel of Matthew-- 00:00:49.28\00:00:51.68 in the Book of Genesis, Chapter 1. 00:00:51.71\00:00:54.05 God created the heaven and earth, 00:00:54.08\00:00:56.44 okay, in six days, on the seventh day He rested. 00:00:56.47\00:00:59.98 And then, God wanted to establish 00:01:00.01\00:01:01.79 that working relationships with human beings. 00:01:01.82\00:01:05.62 Telling them, as long as you work with Me, 00:01:05.65\00:01:08.75 you'll be happy here in the Garden of Eden. 00:01:08.78\00:01:11.39 And then, we know sin came. 00:01:11.42\00:01:14.69 Genesis Chapter 3 and destroyed everything. 00:01:14.72\00:01:18.47 So in Chapter 2, verse 1, we have the book of genealogy. 00:01:18.50\00:01:22.34 It's the beginning with the history 00:01:22.37\00:01:23.96 of the planet earth, and God's effort to establish 00:01:23.99\00:01:27.81 the working relationships, with human beings. 00:01:27.84\00:01:30.92 Then the crush, the sin came. 00:01:30.95\00:01:34.43 Now, we know what happened as the consequences of sin. 00:01:34.46\00:01:37.86 Now we come to remember, the second reference 00:01:37.89\00:01:40.86 to the book of genealogy is chapter 5. 00:01:40.89\00:01:43.26 One is before the coming of sin, 00:01:43.29\00:01:45.28 another one after coming of sin. 00:01:45.31\00:01:47.85 You see, even though, the human beings fell into sin 00:01:47.88\00:01:52.80 and the sin according to Apostle Paul, 00:01:52.83\00:01:55.34 enter into all human beings, because all have sinned. 00:01:55.37\00:01:58.97 God wanted, still to keep the knowledge of Himself 00:01:59.00\00:02:03.73 among the human beings 00:02:03.76\00:02:05.13 and to work for their salvation. 00:02:05.16\00:02:06.62 Any idea, what is the method 00:02:06.65\00:02:08.85 that God used in order to do it? 00:02:08.88\00:02:11.59 So you're saying, He hasn't given up on them? No. 00:02:11.62\00:02:13.96 He is still reaching out, He is working to intervene? 00:02:13.99\00:02:16.74 How? Okay. 00:02:16.77\00:02:18.14 By means of genealogy. 00:02:18.17\00:02:20.47 In Genesis 5:1, He says, 00:02:20.50\00:02:23.88 now this is the beginning-- this is the book of genealogy, 00:02:23.91\00:02:28.36 genealogy of Adam. 00:02:28.39\00:02:30.16 See, God had genealogy, let's explain genealogy. 00:02:30.19\00:02:33.29 It means God has a lineage of His faithful people, 00:02:33.32\00:02:38.60 throughout history, who were faithful to Him. 00:02:38.63\00:02:42.24 And it is through those people, 00:02:42.27\00:02:43.64 through that genealogy, Adam's genealogy, 00:02:43.67\00:02:46.22 that God wanted to preserve 00:02:46.25\00:02:47.77 the knowledge of Himself 00:02:47.80\00:02:49.23 to work for the salvation of human beings. 00:02:49.26\00:02:52.24 See, God did not leave 00:02:52.27\00:02:53.64 the human beings alone, but then what happened? 00:02:53.67\00:02:55.76 So He works through this family tree 00:02:55.79\00:02:57.64 to preserve the knowledge of the truth, okay. 00:02:57.67\00:03:00.30 But then we have, Satan was doing very similar. 00:03:00.33\00:03:03.58 He made the counterfeit genealogy. 00:03:03.61\00:03:05.51 We have that evil genealogy, the genealogy of Cain. Cain. 00:03:05.54\00:03:09.70 Tell me, which genealogy succeeded? 00:03:09.73\00:03:13.65 Well, we certainly see this coming 00:03:13.68\00:03:16.82 all the way down to the time of Jesus. 00:03:16.85\00:03:18.58 No. Actually the flood came, 00:03:18.61\00:03:21.85 have they seen the genealogy, 00:03:21.88\00:03:23.95 finally concluded with the flood. 00:03:23.98\00:03:26.57 Only Noah and his family stayed faithful, 00:03:26.60\00:03:29.53 but the entire earth became corrupted. 00:03:29.56\00:03:31.93 So the flood came and brought 00:03:31.96\00:03:33.95 the end of the generation of the-- 00:03:33.98\00:03:36.00 So God's family tree. 00:03:36.03\00:03:37.92 What does God do after the flood? 00:03:37.95\00:03:42.08 We have the new, the beginning of a new genealogy, 00:03:42.11\00:03:46.60 the genealogy of Noah. 00:03:46.63\00:03:49.07 So the same purpose, the same reason 00:03:49.10\00:03:51.77 but at the same time, Satan, 00:03:51.80\00:03:53.27 creates his own genealogy, the new genealogy 00:03:53.30\00:03:56.42 that try to do something at the Tower of Babel. 00:03:56.45\00:04:00.08 Yeah. To make the name beings, 00:04:00.11\00:04:01.82 to prevent God's plan, that he wanted 00:04:01.85\00:04:03.69 to accomplish through his genealogy. 00:04:03.72\00:04:05.99 And finally, we have that God's plan 00:04:06.02\00:04:08.02 almost failed with the Tower of Babel. 00:04:08.05\00:04:11.88 Then, we have God makes the beginning 00:04:11.91\00:04:14.84 of a new genealogy of Abraham. 00:04:14.87\00:04:17.39 Telling him that, through your offspring, 00:04:17.42\00:04:20.19 through your genealogy, 00:04:20.22\00:04:21.59 all the people of the earth will be blessed. 00:04:21.62\00:04:25.75 It is through Abraham, that we have the beginning 00:04:25.78\00:04:27.93 of that Old Testament genealogy, 00:04:27.96\00:04:29.81 that we call the people of Israel. 00:04:29.84\00:04:33.13 What can we say, Glenn, about that genealogy? 00:04:33.16\00:04:35.49 And for the Hebrews, for the Jews, 00:04:35.52\00:04:37.16 this would have been the most important one. 00:04:37.19\00:04:39.14 But that genealogy, was the history, 00:04:39.17\00:04:42.08 of a constant failure. 00:04:42.11\00:04:45.29 Failures, repeatedly. 00:04:45.32\00:04:46.69 Which actually concluded with the Babylonian exile. 00:04:46.72\00:04:50.87 So now, what is the purpose of this Matthew genealogy? 00:04:50.90\00:04:55.00 So can my genealogy save me, 00:04:55.03\00:04:57.16 can my family tree make all the difference, Ranko? 00:04:57.19\00:05:00.01 Matthew want to tell his readers, his, his readers, 00:05:00.04\00:05:03.96 is that it is through that genealogy. 00:05:03.99\00:05:07.68 And, can I say, out of that genealogy, 00:05:07.71\00:05:10.76 Jesus Christ came. 00:05:10.79\00:05:12.69 And he says, this is the book of genealogy 00:05:12.72\00:05:15.43 of Jesus Christ came. 00:05:15.46\00:05:18.67 He came out of that genealogy. 00:05:18.70\00:05:20.35 So the coming of Jesus is actually the climax 00:05:20.38\00:05:24.80 of that Old Testament genealogies. 00:05:24.83\00:05:29.61 Now, as you ask that question is, 00:05:29.64\00:05:32.74 what this the concluding text 00:05:32.77\00:05:36.62 of the genealogy in Matthew Chapter 1. 00:05:36.65\00:05:39.94 Actually the Bible student recognize, 00:05:39.97\00:05:42.71 that actually its verse 21, functions as the conclusion 00:05:42.74\00:05:47.29 and as the climax of this genealogy 00:05:47.32\00:05:50.56 in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:05:50.59\00:05:51.96 Can you just read? 00:05:51.99\00:05:53.36 All that family tree leads us down to Mathew 1:21. 00:05:53.39\00:05:56.92 "And she shall bring forth a son, 00:05:56.95\00:06:00.19 and you shall call his name Jesus, 00:06:00.22\00:06:02.59 for he will save his people from their sins." 00:06:02.62\00:06:04.42 Sin, so you see-- 00:06:04.45\00:06:05.82 That's the hope, that's the common end-- 00:06:05.85\00:06:07.22 So, you see, Jesus is the last one 00:06:07.25\00:06:10.54 in that list of genealogy. 00:06:10.57\00:06:13.23 I would like you Glenn, to pay something 00:06:13.26\00:06:15.66 very, very important is, its verse 16. 00:06:15.69\00:06:18.93 Usually, we don't pay too much attention to this, 00:06:18.96\00:06:22.58 if we go from verse two, what do we see? 00:06:22.61\00:06:26.00 "Abraham bore Isaac, Isaac bore Jacob, 00:06:26.03\00:06:29.63 Jacob bore Judah" and this is what the entire genealogy. 00:06:29.66\00:06:32.78 It shows that something, those individuals, 00:06:32.81\00:06:36.56 they have to do something with the next, 00:06:36.59\00:06:39.65 with the descendants who came after them. 00:06:39.68\00:06:41.84 They came, because they bore them. 00:06:41.87\00:06:43.94 But when we come to verse 16, it says, 00:06:43.97\00:06:46.76 "Jacob bore Joseph, the husband of Mary, 00:06:46.79\00:06:52.29 by whom Jesus was born, 00:06:52.32\00:06:56.44 who is called the Messiah Christ." 00:06:56.47\00:06:58.30 So now, a careful reader will notice, wait, 00:06:58.33\00:07:00.73 there's a shift, something's happening. 00:07:00.76\00:07:03.04 So what is the shift? 00:07:03.07\00:07:04.44 You see, before you have all this active verb, 00:07:04.47\00:07:07.68 Abraham bore, Isaac bore, 00:07:07.71\00:07:09.58 David bore but Joseph had nothing 00:07:09.61\00:07:12.36 to do with the birth of Jesus. 00:07:12.39\00:07:15.15 Joseph did not bare Jesus. 00:07:15.18\00:07:18.53 And, we'll see in the next program 00:07:18.56\00:07:19.93 about the birth of Jesus. About the birth of Jesus. 00:07:19.96\00:07:21.33 But, this is a great miracle. 00:07:21.36\00:07:23.90 Because Mary became pregnant, because of the Holy Spirit, 00:07:23.93\00:07:27.26 not because of the sexual relationships with Joseph. 00:07:27.29\00:07:31.19 So really Jesus came out of that genealogy, 00:07:31.22\00:07:36.56 but he is not out of the genealogy, 00:07:36.59\00:07:39.79 does it make sense? 00:07:39.82\00:07:41.19 Yes, it does. 00:07:41.22\00:07:42.59 And I do wanna ask you here, 00:07:42.62\00:07:43.99 just very briefly, Ranko. 00:07:44.02\00:07:45.39 Verse 17, it talks about these generations, 00:07:45.42\00:07:47.99 it says that there were 14 from Abraham to David, 00:07:48.02\00:07:51.30 14 from David to captivity, 00:07:51.33\00:07:53.32 and 14 from the captivity to Christ. 00:07:53.35\00:07:55.80 There is a structure here. 00:07:55.83\00:07:57.20 Yes. Actually the Holy Spirit through Matthew 00:07:57.23\00:08:02.61 makes periodization of history. 00:08:02.64\00:08:05.04 We have three periods, but you know, 00:08:05.07\00:08:07.08 to make it you had to take few Israelite kings out. 00:08:07.11\00:08:10.26 Okay, evidently, this is theological purpose, 00:08:10.29\00:08:13.52 not really the purpose of genealogy. 00:08:13.55\00:08:16.13 And the Bible students have been always 00:08:16.16\00:08:18.02 struggling with meaning of that. 00:08:18.05\00:08:19.99 What is the purpose of this 14, 14, 14? 00:08:20.02\00:08:23.92 And there is only one satisfactory solution, 00:08:23.95\00:08:26.37 is because it's the key name here is David. 00:08:26.40\00:08:31.41 And we know that, in Hebrew, 00:08:31.44\00:08:34.27 the name of David consists of those three consonants. 00:08:34.30\00:08:38.21 D.V.D. in Hebrew alphabet this is four, 00:08:38.24\00:08:43.61 this is four. Four plus four, it's eight. 00:08:43.64\00:08:47.21 And the middle one V is actually six, 00:08:47.24\00:08:50.39 so you have the number, 14. 00:08:50.42\00:08:51.79 So, the number 14 in three groups, 00:08:51.82\00:08:53.35 and three letters in the name. 00:08:53.38\00:08:54.75 Because in the Gospel of Matthew, 00:08:54.78\00:08:56.15 the name of David is very significant. 00:08:56.18\00:08:58.06 Jesus is always the son of David. 00:08:58.09\00:09:00.07 He is the king sitting on the throne of David. 00:09:00.10\00:09:04.17 So, they need to show that in Jesus Christ, 00:09:04.20\00:09:06.52 all those Jewish expectations, of the son of David, 00:09:06.55\00:09:10.44 who'll come in the reigning justice actually was fulfilled. 00:09:10.47\00:09:13.73 And you see what a story? 00:09:13.76\00:09:15.13 Here you go from, from the great king David, 00:09:15.16\00:09:19.09 down to the captivity of the Babylon. 00:09:19.12\00:09:21.66 And what a disappoint from Abraham 00:09:21.69\00:09:23.43 to David, all the hope. 00:09:23.46\00:09:25.53 Now, the hope is destroyed into captivity and then, 00:09:25.56\00:09:29.10 the last one brings you to Jesus. 00:09:29.13\00:09:31.13 So, did you notice in verse 21, 00:09:31.16\00:09:33.59 "His name will be Jesus", 00:09:33.62\00:09:35.56 which is actually the Hebrew name Yeshua. 00:09:35.59\00:09:40.65 And Yeshua means "Yahweh saves". 00:09:40.68\00:09:44.10 So, His name is supposed to be Yeshua, 00:09:44.13\00:09:47.02 Jesus which means, "He will save 00:09:47.05\00:09:50.60 His people from their sins". 00:09:50.63\00:09:53.07 You know, the question is, why genealogy? 00:09:53.10\00:09:59.55 Is genealogy important? 00:09:59.58\00:10:02.16 According to the Old Testament, it is important. 00:10:02.19\00:10:05.81 Unfortunately, in the Old Testament times, 00:10:05.84\00:10:08.35 people made genealogy to be a means of salvation. 00:10:08.38\00:10:11.76 Ranko, I'm gonna wrap this up quickly, 00:10:11.79\00:10:13.46 but it's moving to the point of this, 00:10:13.49\00:10:15.86 of--what if I say my family tree's a mess, 00:10:15.89\00:10:19.73 this world's a mess? 00:10:19.76\00:10:21.13 How does this, what does this teach me? 00:10:21.16\00:10:22.80 You see, genealogy is not an excuse for what I am. 00:10:22.83\00:10:27.46 What genealogy cannot do for us? 00:10:27.49\00:10:29.43 By the way, when we read the genealogy, 00:10:29.46\00:10:31.78 I'd like to invite viewers to open the Gospel of Matthew. 00:10:31.81\00:10:35.60 And God name after the name, 00:10:35.63\00:10:37.63 and to go to the Old Testament time, 00:10:37.66\00:10:39.48 and you will see that each one of these names, 00:10:39.51\00:10:43.05 has the history, the history of struggle, 00:10:43.08\00:10:45.93 a history of falling into sin. 00:10:45.96\00:10:48.95 Each one of these names, 00:10:48.98\00:10:51.23 really there is something attached to their name. 00:10:51.26\00:10:54.72 That really asks us this question, 00:10:54.75\00:10:56.49 what kind of genealogy is this? 00:10:56.52\00:10:59.92 But, I just want to tell you, 00:10:59.95\00:11:01.40 genealogy cannot save anybody. 00:11:01.43\00:11:04.94 Actually, the key text, Matthew 1:21, 00:11:04.97\00:11:07.37 is to tell us, that His name is Jesus, 00:11:07.40\00:11:11.57 because, what genealogy could not do, okay. 00:11:11.60\00:11:15.67 He came to save, His people from their sins. 00:11:15.70\00:11:21.60 One more time, He came to save 00:11:21.63\00:11:24.80 His people from their sins. 00:11:24.83\00:11:28.00 Which people? The people that are here, 00:11:28.03\00:11:30.52 in the genealogy, Jesus came to save, 00:11:30.55\00:11:34.40 you see, David and Bathsheba-- 00:11:34.43\00:11:36.17 So, you're saying if Jesus came 00:11:36.20\00:11:38.67 to save people like Tamar, 00:11:38.70\00:11:41.21 if Jesus came to save someone like Rahab? 00:11:41.24\00:11:43.50 David, Solomon, Rahab. 00:11:43.53\00:11:45.37 A prostitute, David a murderer and adulterer, 00:11:45.40\00:11:48.51 if He came to save those-- 00:11:48.54\00:11:50.74 He can save me. He can save me. 00:11:50.77\00:11:52.15 Yes. So Jesus came to save His people. 00:11:52.18\00:11:56.39 We are a part of His people. 00:11:56.42\00:11:57.99 Friends, we need genealogy. 00:11:58.02\00:12:00.06 We need to belong. 00:12:00.09\00:12:01.48 God has always, His genealogy, His people. 00:12:01.51\00:12:05.20 It is through His people, God wants to proclaim 00:12:05.23\00:12:08.27 the knowledge of Himself, that everlasting gospel. 00:12:08.30\00:12:11.63 Today, God has His genealogy 00:12:11.66\00:12:13.45 and He would like, through His people, 00:12:13.48\00:12:15.76 to proclaim the message of Jesus Christ. 00:12:15.79\00:12:18.88 That Jesus Christ is coming very, very soon. 00:12:18.91\00:12:22.33 We need the genealogy, but we have to understand, 00:12:22.36\00:12:25.46 that genealogy cannot save us. 00:12:25.49\00:12:27.62 We need Jesus Christ, because He is the only one, 00:12:27.65\00:12:32.13 who is able to save people from their sins. 00:12:32.16\00:12:36.47 And this is that great message. 00:12:36.50\00:12:38.40 This is the great comfort that comes 00:12:38.43\00:12:40.78 to me from the Gospel of Matthew. 00:12:40.81\00:12:42.56 Now, we see why Matthew under the inspiration 00:12:42.59\00:12:45.78 of the Holy Spirit, he begins his book 00:12:45.81\00:12:48.63 with genealogy to tell us, that what human beings, 00:12:48.66\00:12:52.83 they cannot do for my salvation, 00:12:52.86\00:12:54.64 what I, cannot do for my salvation. 00:12:54.67\00:12:57.40 Our hope is only in the one, whose name is Jesus, 00:12:57.43\00:13:02.31 because He is the one who can save 00:13:02.34\00:13:06.05 His people, from their sins. 00:13:06.08\00:13:08.32 So I would like to tell the viewers, 00:13:08.35\00:13:10.88 if you are in despair.
