Amen. 00:01:13.09\00:01:16.42 Wanna welcome back Dr. Ranko Stefanovic. 00:01:16.45\00:01:18.73 Ranko, dear friend and colleague 00:01:18.76\00:01:20.31 at Andrew's University, 00:01:20.34\00:01:21.71 you are professor of the New Testament. 00:01:21.74\00:01:23.46 You served as a pastor, you're now seminary professor. 00:01:23.49\00:01:27.41 What is that about the scripture 00:01:27.44\00:01:28.81 that just draws your heart 00:01:28.84\00:01:30.21 and especially this Book of Matthew? 00:01:30.24\00:01:33.17 The Bible affects human lives. 00:01:33.20\00:01:37.18 You cannot read it and stay indifferent. 00:01:37.21\00:01:41.70 It changed your life? It changed my life completely. 00:01:41.73\00:01:43.59 And it continues to change and impact it. 00:01:43.62\00:01:45.77 Now we are looking at the Gospel 00:01:45.80\00:01:47.17 according to Matthew. 00:01:47.20\00:01:48.57 Last time we had little bit of an introduction, 00:01:48.60\00:01:50.64 we saw that Matthew inspired 00:01:50.67\00:01:53.02 by the Holy Spirit is writing to, 00:01:53.05\00:01:56.07 probably a predominantly Jewish audience, 00:01:56.10\00:01:58.43 although it's a timeless book. 00:01:58.46\00:02:00.71 It's appealed to every generation even does today. 00:02:00.74\00:02:04.00 And He's wanting to tell us something 00:02:04.03\00:02:06.10 about the kingdom of God, 00:02:06.13\00:02:09.11 the kingdom of Heaven rather 00:02:09.14\00:02:10.51 and a focus on Jesus as our Lord and Savior and King. 00:02:10.54\00:02:14.57 We looked at the fact 00:02:14.60\00:02:15.97 that there's five blocks of material. 00:02:16.00\00:02:18.10 That they kinda remind 00:02:18.13\00:02:19.50 the Jewish reader of the Pentateuch. 00:02:19.53\00:02:22.39 Now, when we open the book we begin reading, 00:02:22.42\00:02:25.89 I want to just read the first part of the beginning. Please. 00:02:25.92\00:02:28.40 And see if you have reaction here, 00:02:28.43\00:02:30.00 the first verse we all get into Matthew 1:1. 00:02:30.03\00:02:34.36 "The book of genealogy of Jesus Christ, 00:02:34.39\00:02:36.82 the son of David, the son of Abraham". 00:02:36.85\00:02:39.28 Now we're all with you till that part, 00:02:39.31\00:02:40.78 but then verse 2 "Abraham begat Isaac, 00:02:40.81\00:02:44.40 Isaac begat Jacob, Jacob begat Judah 00:02:44.43\00:02:47.13 and his brothers, Judah begat Phares 00:02:47.16\00:02:49.42 and Zara by Tamar, Phares begat" 00:02:49.45\00:02:51.73 right about now, people falling asleep. 00:02:51.76\00:02:55.73 What a strange way for us, 00:02:55.76\00:02:57.73 to think a beginning a book by a genealogy. 00:02:57.76\00:03:02.73 What's so important about genealogy? 00:03:02.76\00:03:04.77 Okay, I have to admit when I was a young person, 00:03:04.80\00:03:09.58 by the age 12, I have read my Bible three times through, 00:03:09.61\00:03:14.23 but I must admit there are some portions of the Bible 00:03:14.26\00:03:16.63 that I came to read I simply skip it, 00:03:16.66\00:03:20.25 and this was one of those sections the first 17 verses 00:03:20.28\00:03:23.07 I would simply skip and keep on reading. 00:03:23.10\00:03:26.84 But let me tell you something, 00:03:26.87\00:03:29.33 when you write a book like the Gospel of Matthew, 00:03:29.36\00:03:34.21 you put the most important 00:03:34.24\00:03:36.93 and the most significant things at the very beginning. 00:03:36.96\00:03:39.68 Okay, but for us genealogies aren't very important. 00:03:39.71\00:03:41.94 I know it. See, among the Jewish people, 00:03:41.97\00:03:45.05 genealogy was very important. 00:03:45.08\00:03:47.25 You know genealogies were done and kept with priest, 00:03:47.28\00:03:51.16 so people knew where they belonged especially 00:03:51.19\00:03:53.43 if the person was fit for the priestly ministry. 00:03:53.46\00:03:57.57 And there are some parts of the world today 00:03:57.60\00:03:59.19 where genealogy is very much-- much important 00:03:59.22\00:04:02.01 so that you can trace your origin where you belong to. 00:04:02.04\00:04:05.37 Infact Josephus begins his autobiography 00:04:05.40\00:04:08.08 with the genealogy to prove your purity, 00:04:08.11\00:04:10.48 your credibility, your credential. 00:04:10.51\00:04:12.77 If my great grandfather was a significant 00:04:12.80\00:04:15.41 rich person known in the world, 00:04:15.44\00:04:18.27 I would be so eager to trace my genealogy 00:04:18.30\00:04:20.63 to remind people who actually I am 00:04:20.66\00:04:23.11 and where I came from. 00:04:23.14\00:04:24.63 However, genealogy in the Gospel of Matthew 00:04:24.66\00:04:31.09 is not the real genealogy. 00:04:31.12\00:04:32.96 You suggesting there's gonna be some 00:04:32.99\00:04:34.74 fascinating things in this Genealogy. 00:04:34.77\00:04:36.49 First how does genealogy begin? 00:04:36.52\00:04:38.85 This is the Book of genealogy of Jesus Christ, 00:04:38.88\00:04:42.13 the son of David, and then you have the son of Abraham. 00:04:42.16\00:04:46.13 First David is not the son of Abraham, 00:04:46.16\00:04:48.95 the generation generations between the two. 00:04:48.98\00:04:51.72 Why the son of David, 00:04:51.75\00:04:53.29 because in the Gospel of Matthew, 00:04:53.32\00:04:55.10 Jesus is the king, who came to the earth 00:04:55.13\00:04:58.93 and it refers to that promise given to David 00:04:58.96\00:05:02.12 that God will have his offspring 00:05:02.15\00:05:04.83 who will sit on the throne of David and rule forever. 00:05:04.86\00:05:09.42 But the son of Abraham refers to the covenant promise 00:05:09.45\00:05:13.46 that God made to Abraham that through his seed, 00:05:13.49\00:05:17.40 through his offspring, all the nations 00:05:17.43\00:05:20.28 of the earth will be blessed. 00:05:20.31\00:05:22.13 So the begin of the genealogy is to tell us 00:05:22.16\00:05:25.65 that actually those promises made to David 00:05:25.68\00:05:28.35 and to Abraham are now to come to be true. 00:05:28.38\00:05:32.11 So a Jewish reader, reading this in the first century 00:05:32.14\00:05:35.19 would be amazed to see the claim from the first verse. 00:05:35.22\00:05:38.38 Jesus has the right to be a king 00:05:38.41\00:05:40.60 and He's the fulfillment of the covenant promises, 00:05:40.63\00:05:42.79 the one they will be looking forward to. 00:05:42.82\00:05:44.19 Let's keep in mind 00:05:44.22\00:05:45.59 to whom the Gospel of Matthew was originally written. 00:05:45.62\00:05:48.06 When we go to the Gospel of Luke, 00:05:48.09\00:05:49.94 Luke also has genealogy in Chapter 3, 00:05:49.97\00:05:52.76 but he does not begin with David or Abraham. 00:05:52.79\00:05:56.98 Actually he concludes he got in a reverse order, 00:05:57.01\00:05:59.70 but he concludes with Adam and the son of God, 00:05:59.73\00:06:02.66 because in the Gospel, you remember, 00:06:02.69\00:06:04.42 the Gospel of Luke was written to non Jews 00:06:04.45\00:06:06.95 so he wanted to show that Jesus 00:06:06.98\00:06:08.92 was actually a Savior of the entire humankind. 00:06:08.95\00:06:12.43 So we have an idea here that Jesus is the one 00:06:12.46\00:06:15.92 who has the right to be on the throne. Yes. 00:06:15.95\00:06:18.58 Now Matthew will spend the rest book showing 00:06:18.61\00:06:20.68 He's the different kind of king 00:06:20.71\00:06:22.08 than they expected. Yes. 00:06:22.11\00:06:23.48 And secondly, He's the covenant for fulfillment, 00:06:23.51\00:06:25.85 He's the Messiah they have been longing for, 00:06:25.88\00:06:27.60 we'll see much more of that. 00:06:27.63\00:06:29.00 What else should we notice 00:06:29.03\00:06:30.40 in the way the genealogy is structured? 00:06:30.43\00:06:31.89 Glenn, this genealogy, 00:06:31.92\00:06:34.63 the primary reason of this genealogy 00:06:34.66\00:06:37.45 is not really to trace, 00:06:37.48\00:06:40.53 that to least going up to Abraham. 00:06:40.56\00:06:43.45 How do you know that? 00:06:43.48\00:06:44.85 Because this is not an ordinary genealogy 00:06:44.88\00:06:47.79 for which reasons, you know when you have genealogies, 00:06:47.82\00:06:50.20 it's very, very important that all names 00:06:50.23\00:06:52.50 in the list are included. 00:06:52.53\00:06:54.90 However, when we read the Gospel of Matthew, 00:06:54.93\00:06:58.22 this genealogy is there're several names 00:06:58.25\00:07:01.59 that are not mentioned. 00:07:01.62\00:07:03.97 And this is usually 00:07:04.00\00:07:05.37 what the Bible students want to understand 00:07:05.40\00:07:07.42 and the question is why? 00:07:07.45\00:07:09.12 Why certain names are taken out? 00:07:09.15\00:07:12.04 But there is much more. 00:07:12.07\00:07:13.68 You will notice in this Geneo, 00:07:13.71\00:07:15.49 usually in Jewish genealogy, men they bear children. 00:07:15.52\00:07:20.89 You see, Abraham. 00:07:20.92\00:07:22.74 You're not speaking biologically? 00:07:22.77\00:07:24.25 No biologically. In geneology. 00:07:24.28\00:07:25.65 But his because its men that counts in Genealogy. 00:07:25.68\00:07:29.24 But what here unusual is, that four women 00:07:29.27\00:07:33.46 actually are mentioned, and let me give their names, 00:07:33.49\00:07:37.11 in verse 3 its Tamar. 00:07:37.14\00:07:40.08 Yes and Tamar is not usually one 00:07:40.11\00:07:43.05 that we teach our children much about. 00:07:43.08\00:07:44.45 No, no. Then in verse 5 it's Ruth, 00:07:44.48\00:07:47.63 Moabite, Tamar was Canaanite, 00:07:47.66\00:07:51.90 Rahab was Canaanite, in verse 5 as well. 00:07:51.93\00:07:55.95 And then we have something very unusual in verse 6. 00:07:55.98\00:07:59.99 There is one that is mentioned not by name, 00:08:00.02\00:08:04.52 as the wife of the one the she was-- 00:08:04.55\00:08:07.75 the woman that was the wife of Uriah Hittite. 00:08:07.78\00:08:10.35 Doesn't even say Bathsheba. 00:08:10.38\00:08:12.14 The mother of Solomon. 00:08:12.17\00:08:13.95 And usually the Bible students, 00:08:13.98\00:08:15.35 they ask the question why? 00:08:15.38\00:08:17.42 Why such a genealogy is? 00:08:17.45\00:08:19.66 There is something about these women 00:08:19.69\00:08:24.37 that we can learn. 00:08:24.40\00:08:26.78 Number one, they are all non Israelites. 00:08:26.81\00:08:30.69 So you are talking about Gentiles whose-- 00:08:30.72\00:08:33.39 were usually outside, you know, 00:08:33.42\00:08:35.24 if you gonna be priest here to prove your tree 00:08:35.27\00:08:37.21 went all the way back to Aaron 00:08:37.24\00:08:39.00 and now in Jesus genealogy you have Gentiles, non Jews. 00:08:39.03\00:08:43.80 And there is something more. How can that be possible? 00:08:43.83\00:08:45.97 All these four women they had their men 00:08:46.00\00:08:50.15 in their life prior to the one mentioned in the genealogy. 00:08:50.18\00:08:55.67 You know all those four women are the wives 00:08:55.70\00:08:58.16 of those mentioned genealogy are Israelites, 00:08:58.19\00:09:00.18 but all of them they had husband 00:09:00.21\00:09:03.17 or they were involved with a man 00:09:03.20\00:09:05.51 before the one mentioned in the genealogy. 00:09:05.54\00:09:08.30 Why is that? See this is not usual genealogy. 00:09:08.33\00:09:11.74 Its purpose is to tell us the salvation 00:09:11.77\00:09:15.36 is not limited to the Jews. 00:09:15.39\00:09:17.17 It deal with the universality of salvation 00:09:17.20\00:09:20.13 and actually he's telling us 00:09:20.16\00:09:22.47 also the scope of the salvation. 00:09:22.50\00:09:25.83 Actually Jesus came to save the sinners. 00:09:25.86\00:09:29.01 So you are saying in spite of the fact 00:09:29.04\00:09:30.61 that one is a prostitute, 00:09:30.64\00:09:32.09 one is involved with immorality, 00:09:32.12\00:09:34.86 others have other issues, still God is working. 00:09:34.89\00:09:38.57 Yeah, but there is much more. All right. 00:09:38.60\00:09:41.54 When we read this genealogy 00:09:41.57\00:09:44.78 and probably for the sake of time, 00:09:44.81\00:09:46.89 we don't have time to read all those 17 verses. 00:09:46.92\00:09:51.01 But when you read genealogy from verse one all up to 17, 00:09:51.04\00:09:54.38 that's not really Genealogy, 00:09:54.41\00:09:55.83 it's the history of the people of Israel. 00:09:55.86\00:09:59.43 Now, you--are you taking that from the structure 00:09:59.46\00:10:02.22 that it's the history of Israel? 00:10:02.25\00:10:03.66 No, it's from the very, very genealogy. 00:10:03.69\00:10:06.01 You know, in Jewish Genealogy 00:10:06.04\00:10:07.41 number one women are not mentioned, never its man. 00:10:07.44\00:10:10.60 Second one, it's only this person bore that one 00:10:10.63\00:10:15.20 and he bore another one, but we have here 00:10:15.23\00:10:17.88 certain events mentioned in genealogy. 00:10:17.91\00:10:21.22 So the events are mentioned, 00:10:21.25\00:10:23.82 so to show that actually this genealogy 00:10:23.85\00:10:26.40 is really the history of God's people 00:10:26.43\00:10:29.28 in the Old Testament times what makes 00:10:29.31\00:10:31.41 this genealogy very, very unique. 00:10:31.44\00:10:33.37 So, so Ranko, you suggest that within this family tree, 00:10:33.40\00:10:36.47 this genealogy, there's specific time period breaks, 00:10:36.50\00:10:40.88 that are telling us that through this salvation, 00:10:40.91\00:10:43.69 through this experience of history 00:10:43.72\00:10:45.41 God is working at salvation. 00:10:45.44\00:10:47.35 He will use all kinds of people. 00:10:47.38\00:10:49.97 They know that you are still asking a question 00:10:50.00\00:10:52.12 what is then the purpose of this Genealogy? 00:10:52.15\00:10:54.34 What is the genealogy all about? 00:10:54.37\00:10:56.39 Okay can we talk about that? 00:10:56.42\00:10:57.93 Let's do it. What genealogy is? 00:10:57.96\00:10:59.33 Okay, when we read today 00:10:59.36\00:11:01.56 especially when we read in English translation 00:11:01.59\00:11:04.10 it doesn't make too much sense. 00:11:04.13\00:11:06.48 I have here in my Bible the record of the genealogy, 00:11:06.51\00:11:09.99 some other Bibles they use different expressions. 00:11:10.02\00:11:14.24 New King James Bible says 00:11:14.27\00:11:16.72 'this is the book of genealogy'. 00:11:16.75\00:11:19.45 You see, so many times it doesn't mean too much to us, 00:11:19.48\00:11:25.69 but for the Christian who were of Jewish origins, 00:11:25.72\00:11:29.05 who had their Bible as the Old Testament, 00:11:29.08\00:11:32.05 that expression would bring to their mind something else. 00:11:32.08\00:11:36.01 So Glenn, I've would like you to help me. 00:11:36.04\00:11:39.61 We can open the Book of Genesis 2:4. 00:11:39.64\00:11:44.01 Okay Genesis 2:4. Genesis 2:4. 00:11:44.04\00:11:47.49 Speaking of the wise men coming? 00:11:47.52\00:11:50.09 No, no, the Book of Genesis. 00:11:50.12\00:11:51.67 Genesis 2:4 excuse me, I'm so much in Matthew. 00:11:51.70\00:11:54.48 Yeah, we have chapter 1 00:11:54.51\00:11:56.80 we have the creation of heaven 00:11:56.83\00:11:58.27 and earth in seven days. 00:11:58.30\00:12:01.36 And now in chapter 2 verse 4 we have the explanation 00:12:01.39\00:12:05.82 in detail of the creation that God did 00:12:05.85\00:12:08.35 in chapter 1, so let's read. 00:12:08.38\00:12:10.38 "This is the history of Heaven's and the Earth 00:12:10.41\00:12:12.30 when they were created and the day 00:12:12.33\00:12:14.29 that the Lord God made the Earth and the Heaven's." 00:12:14.32\00:12:17.05 I just wanted to tell you, 00:12:17.08\00:12:18.45 we have problem here with this translation is. 00:12:18.48\00:12:21.07 In Hebrew it says 'this is the book of genealogy 00:12:21.10\00:12:24.96 of the heaven and the earth'. 00:12:24.99\00:12:26.99 In Hebrew, the same is inceptal change 00:12:27.02\00:12:30.20 which is actually the Greek 00:12:30.23\00:12:31.60 translation of the Old Testament. 00:12:31.63\00:12:34.54 Can you also read chapter 5 verse 1? 00:12:34.57\00:12:36.86 Chapter 5 of Genesis and verse 1. 00:12:36.89\00:12:41.13 'This is the book of genealogy of Adam.' 00:12:41.16\00:12:44.60 So if these are the only two places 00:12:44.63\00:12:47.65 in the Old Testament when this expression is found 00:12:47.68\00:12:50.99 'This is the Book of Genealogy' 00:12:51.02\00:12:53.38 only two times in the Old Testament, 00:12:53.41\00:12:55.13 its Genesis 2:4 and Genesis 5:1. 00:12:55.16\00:12:59.14 So tell me when the first century readers 00:12:59.17\00:13:01.58 of Jewish origin when they read Matthew 1:1 00:13:01.61\00:13:06.32 This is the book of genealogy of Jesus Christ, 00:13:06.35\00:13:08.71 what could come to their mind? 00:13:08.74\00:13:10.11 The echoes of those-- 00:13:10.14\00:13:11.51 The echoes of Genesis 2:4. 00:13:11.54\00:13:12.91 So now there's a question. 00:13:12.94\00:13:14.48 If Matthew indeed use this expression 00:13:14.51\00:13:17.94 from the Old Testament and wanted to use 00:13:17.97\00:13:22.22 to communicate the message to his readers 00:13:22.25\00:13:24.91 in the language that echoes the Old Testament, 00:13:24.94\00:13:28.56 then what is the purpose of all of this? 00:13:28.59\00:13:32.01 What is the message that the Holy Spirit 00:13:32.04\00:13:34.57 through Matthew wanted to communicate 00:13:34.60\00:13:37.82 to those Christians who lived there in the first century? 00:13:37.85\00:13:40.99 You're suggesting that the message 00:13:41.02\00:13:42.39 is lot more than biology? 00:13:42.42\00:13:43.79 Yes. And we will do it in just short time. 00:13:43.82\00:13:47.24 So we have been explaining the genealogy of Jesus. 00:13:47.27\00:13:50.14 There's lots more here and we are gonna come back 00:13:50.17\00:13:51.85 to that in just a moment. 00:13:51.88\00:13:53.29 After a break here with Ranko Stefanovic 00:13:53.32\00:13:55.75 in the Book of Matthew. 00:13:55.78\00:13:57.22
