Welcome back to our study of the resurrection of our Lord 00:00:01.33\00:00:04.90 and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:00:04.93\00:00:06.43 Ranko, this was such a vital historical event 00:00:06.47\00:00:11.14 central to the New Testament. 00:00:11.17\00:00:14.28 Glenn, when we are talking about the resurrection of Jesus, 00:00:14.31\00:00:18.58 we are talking about one of the legends. 00:00:18.61\00:00:21.68 The product of the imagination of a certain group of people. 00:00:22.52\00:00:27.32 Today we have a problem. 00:00:27.36\00:00:32.19 People who are even educated who doubt that the miraculous 00:00:32.23\00:00:38.83 resurrection can even happen. 00:00:38.87\00:00:40.47 The consequence is Jesus did not resurrect. 00:00:40.50\00:00:44.74 However, the early disciples, and the followers of Jesus 00:00:44.77\00:00:50.85 did not have any problem with that. Yeah! Why? 00:00:50.88\00:00:53.55 Actually, I would like, Glenn, that we go to one of the 00:00:54.55\00:00:57.52 Biblical texts. It's not in the gospel of Matthew. 00:00:58.29\00:00:59.65 It's about the apostle Paul. 00:00:59.69\00:01:02.72 The apostle Paul, you know, was not a follower of Jesus. 00:01:02.76\00:01:05.99 He was not among those early, early disciples. 00:01:06.03\00:01:08.76 He actually joined the group a little bit later. 00:01:08.80\00:01:11.73 But for Paul there was not any doubt that the crucified Jesus 00:01:11.77\00:01:16.50 whom he preached actually resurrected. 00:01:16.54\00:01:18.84 And let's see what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:1-8. 00:01:18.87\00:01:24.78 This is such a great passage because it combines 00:01:24.81\00:01:27.12 the importance and the reality. Yes, yes. 00:01:27.15\00:01:29.18 For I delivered to you as of first importance 00:01:30.15\00:01:33.86 what I also received,... 00:01:33.89\00:01:35.26 And now we find really the essence of New Testament 00:01:35.29\00:01:37.53 preaching. This is what the gospel is. 00:01:38.09\00:01:39.46 This is what it is. 00:01:39.49\00:01:40.86 ...that Christ died for our sins in accordance 00:01:40.90\00:01:42.40 with the scriptures; (first event), that He was buried, 00:01:42.43\00:01:45.70 (and thirdly), that He was raised on the third day 00:01:45.73\00:01:49.54 in accordance with the Scriptures, 00:01:49.57\00:01:51.07 and that He appeared to Cephas, and the twelve. 00:01:51.11\00:01:53.07 Glenn, sorry for interrupting you. 00:01:53.11\00:01:54.88 I just have to take a few moments. 00:01:54.91\00:01:56.85 I'm taking advantage of that. 00:01:56.88\00:01:59.45 What was the core of the early gospel 00:01:59.48\00:02:03.89 that the disciples preached? 00:02:03.92\00:02:05.29 Death, burial, and the resurrection of Jesus. 00:02:05.32\00:02:09.79 Please, I'd like to turn the attention of the viewers today. 00:02:09.82\00:02:12.39 What is the core today of the Christian's belief? 00:02:12.43\00:02:15.80 What is it that we talk the most and celebrate even 00:02:15.83\00:02:18.60 for several weeks? It's the birth of Jesus. 00:02:19.37\00:02:20.74 Christmas. 00:02:20.77\00:02:22.14 When Easter comes we just mention it one weekend, etc. 00:02:22.17\00:02:27.41 But we pay; somehow we reverse the meaning of that. 00:02:27.44\00:02:30.51 Of course, the birth of Jesus is important. 00:02:30.55\00:02:34.22 But actually it is the death of Jesus, and the resurrection 00:02:34.82\00:02:39.92 that provides the Christians with the hope that our future 00:02:39.95\00:02:44.66 is determined, that our future is settled with God, because He 00:02:44.69\00:02:50.57 paid the ransom for us on the cross of Calvary. 00:02:50.60\00:02:53.44 In the Scriptures those two events are tied together. 00:02:53.47\00:02:55.70 Those three events: the cross, the burial, the resurrection, 00:02:55.74\00:02:58.64 are all tired together. 00:02:58.67\00:03:00.11 So let's see how certain this is. 00:03:00.14\00:03:01.91 And that he appeared to Cephas, or Peter, then to the twelve, 00:03:01.94\00:03:05.21 then he appeared to more than five hundred brethren 00:03:05.25\00:03:07.35 at one time; most of whom are still alive,... 00:03:07.38\00:03:10.02 Witnesses: over five hundred. 00:03:10.05\00:03:12.55 ...though some have fallen asleep. 00:03:12.59\00:03:15.36 Then he appeared to James; then to all the apostles. 00:03:15.39\00:03:17.69 Last of all, as to one ultimately born, 00:03:17.73\00:03:20.60 he appeared also to me. 00:03:20.63\00:03:21.96 Why, why early Christians? 00:03:22.00\00:03:24.00 Why did the early Christians have any problem 00:03:24.03\00:03:26.00 with the resurrection of Jesus? 00:03:26.03\00:03:27.40 Come on, Glenn, you can have two or three people; 00:03:27.44\00:03:29.97 can they lie? Of course! Yeah. 00:03:30.01\00:03:31.84 You can even have five people and they can lie. 00:03:31.87\00:03:34.24 You can have ten people and they can bring something 00:03:34.28\00:03:37.95 that never happened. 00:03:37.98\00:03:39.55 But when you compare them you can be sure that they lied. 00:03:39.58\00:03:42.85 But if you have, he doesn't say five hundred...It's more than. 00:03:42.88\00:03:46.22 ...more than five hundred, plus twelve, plus a few others, 00:03:47.16\00:03:51.73 plus women... Yes. 00:03:51.76\00:03:54.93 ...believe me that testimony is trustworthy. 00:03:54.93\00:03:57.47 There's not any doubt that something like that happened. 00:03:57.50\00:04:00.87 And we'll see a great testimony is what they do about it. 00:04:00.90\00:04:03.64 It changes their lives completely. 00:04:03.67\00:04:05.17 It changes their lives! Now let's go back to Matthew. 00:04:05.21\00:04:08.24 So the Christian's faith is based on the firm foundation. 00:04:08.28\00:04:11.25 Our Lord really is risen. 00:04:11.51\00:04:14.42 And let's go back to Matthew Chapter 28. Please. 00:04:14.45\00:04:17.25 The women, who really couldn't in the court of law be 00:04:17.75\00:04:20.62 witnesses, so we need some men to come along 00:04:20.66\00:04:22.62 and help as witnesses. 00:04:22.66\00:04:24.49 So who are the first missionaries? The women. 00:04:24.53\00:04:26.03 In the gospel they were women of the gospel that Paul talks 00:04:27.13\00:04:29.56 about in 1 Corinthians in Chapter 15. 00:04:29.60\00:04:31.97 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy 00:04:32.00\00:04:35.10 and ran to tell his disciples. 00:04:35.14\00:04:36.57 Verse 9 of Matthew 28. 00:04:36.60\00:04:38.57 And behold Jesus met them and said, Hail. 00:04:38.61\00:04:40.81 And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshipped him. 00:04:40.84\00:04:44.68 Ranko, you've lost your parents. 00:04:44.71\00:04:46.78 I've lost my parents. 00:04:46.82\00:04:48.15 There's a cemetery in Berrien Springs where my mother 00:04:48.18\00:04:51.39 and father are buried. 00:04:51.42\00:04:53.32 The resurrection is not a doctrine; it's our hope. 00:04:53.36\00:04:55.49 It's a blessed hope, as Paul says in Thessalonians. 00:04:55.52\00:04:58.03 Can I say something else? You say it's hope. 00:04:58.06\00:04:59.43 I would just, Glenn, add one more element. 00:05:00.13\00:05:02.50 Resurrection is a personal experience. 00:05:02.53\00:05:05.23 If you have any doubt about the resurrection of Jesus; 00:05:05.27\00:05:08.50 that He is alive, please surrender your life to Him. 00:05:08.54\00:05:14.88 Establish a relationship with Him, and you will have strong 00:05:14.91\00:05:17.95 evidence that our Lord is still alive. 00:05:17.98\00:05:21.35 He is real. 00:05:21.38\00:05:23.39 His promise is real, and one day we will see Him at the 00:05:23.42\00:05:29.79 Second Coming of Christ. 00:05:29.82\00:05:31.19 You know you almost feel like breaking out into that 00:05:31.23\00:05:33.60 great gospel song, He Lives. He lives. 00:05:33.63\00:05:35.60 I serve a risen Savior. 00:05:36.03\00:05:37.50 That's what we're finding here in this wonderful story. 00:05:37.53\00:05:41.40 Jesus says, Don't be afraid. 00:05:41.44\00:05:44.67 They have worshipped Him; but there is something more. 00:05:44.71\00:05:47.81 The gospel isn't done. 00:05:47.84\00:05:49.21 We have a risen Savior. 00:05:49.24\00:05:50.88 And they're worshipping that risen Lord, 00:05:50.91\00:05:52.81 but there's something else that's left. 00:05:52.85\00:05:54.32 Ranko, they have a task. They have a purpose. 00:05:54.35\00:05:55.72 Actually for me, since I was a child, Verse 10 left an 00:05:56.79\00:06:03.09 impression on my mind. 00:06:03.12\00:06:04.49 Can you imagine, the disciples were sleeping 00:06:04.53\00:06:06.90 in the garden of Gethsemane. 00:06:06.93\00:06:08.26 When Jesus was arrested they fled away leaving Jesus. 00:06:08.30\00:06:11.67 Full of doubts; boy what a bunch! 00:06:11.70\00:06:16.00 Ha ha ha, just like us! 00:06:16.04\00:06:17.51 But listen, the first thing; this is the first message. 00:06:17.54\00:06:21.88 These are actually the first words of Jesus 00:06:21.91\00:06:24.01 after His resurrection. 00:06:24.05\00:06:25.41 He says, Do not be afraid. 00:06:25.45\00:06:28.02 Go and tell my disciples, my brethren, Jesus called them. 00:06:28.05\00:06:34.59 Remember we talked about "if your brother sins"; 00:06:34.62\00:06:37.93 what Jesus said. Go to Galilee. 00:06:38.79\00:06:41.03 I will meet you there. 00:06:41.06\00:06:43.90 He restores Peter. 00:06:45.00\00:06:46.40 He commissions the disciples. 00:06:46.43\00:06:48.34 What a loving Lord. 00:06:48.37\00:06:50.14 And then how does the gospel of Matthew end? 00:06:50.17\00:06:54.74 Would you read Verses 16-20? 00:06:54.78\00:06:57.01 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain 00:06:57.05\00:07:01.02 to which Jesus had directed them. 00:07:01.05\00:07:02.58 And when they saw him they worshipped him. 00:07:02.62\00:07:05.22 Again, they worshipped Him... 00:07:05.25\00:07:06.62 Worship always goes with the fact that Jesus resurrected. 00:07:06.65\00:07:10.33 Yes. ...but some doubted. 00:07:10.36\00:07:11.73 And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven 00:07:11.76\00:07:15.63 and on earth has been given to me. 00:07:15.66\00:07:17.73 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them 00:07:17.77\00:07:22.90 in the name of the Father, and of the Son, 00:07:22.94\00:07:25.21 and of the Holy Spirit: Teaching them to observe all that 00:07:25.24\00:07:28.24 I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, 00:07:28.28\00:07:31.85 to the end of the age. 00:07:31.88\00:07:33.42 What a promise! 00:07:33.45\00:07:36.02 This is according to the gospel of Matthew. 00:07:36.05\00:07:38.22 The last commission that Jesus gave to His disciples. 00:07:38.25\00:07:43.09 You know that I'm alive. 00:07:43.12\00:07:45.13 You know that I resurrected. 00:07:45.16\00:07:47.23 Take this message and proclaim to others; to whom? 00:07:47.23\00:07:52.13 to all nations. 00:07:52.17\00:07:54.20 Dear viewers, to all nations; to all people on the earth; 00:07:54.24\00:07:58.44 you and me included. 00:07:58.47\00:07:59.87 The promise is both spatial and temporal. 00:07:59.91\00:08:03.08 It's to all the earth, and it's through all time. What more. 00:08:03.11\00:08:07.38 So, go to preach to all people, including me. Yes. 00:08:07.42\00:08:09.88 But when that message reaches my heart where am I supposed to go? 00:08:09.92\00:08:14.36 Now the great commission implies to me; let me now go 00:08:14.39\00:08:17.56 and proclaim that gospel that Jesus died, He resurrected, 00:08:17.59\00:08:23.13 He ascended there to the heavenly places. 00:08:23.16\00:08:26.84 Yes. 00:08:27.84\00:08:29.20 And His presence is with us always. 00:08:29.24\00:08:32.67 How long all of this? 00:08:32.71\00:08:34.08 Until the very end of the age. 00:08:34.11\00:08:35.84 We believe that we live at the end of the age. 00:08:35.88\00:08:40.92 So His promise is still valid and of concern 00:08:40.95\00:08:43.82 to each one of us. 00:08:43.85\00:08:45.49 We're to become disciples and then go and make disciples... 00:08:45.52\00:08:48.96 Yes. of the one that we're following: Jesus our Savior. 00:08:49.46\00:08:52.19 Now Ranko, we've taken quite a journey here, and we've only 00:08:52.23\00:08:56.26 touched a few things. 00:08:56.30\00:08:57.67 We certainly can't feel that all of the gospel of Matthew 00:08:57.70\00:09:02.47 has been explored. 00:09:02.50\00:09:03.87 What should we think about now as we come to these last verses? 00:09:03.91\00:09:08.78 What should be next? 00:09:08.81\00:09:10.55 We should continue to study. 00:09:10.58\00:09:11.95 We should continue to pray. 00:09:11.98\00:09:13.52 Friends, when we reflect on what we have covered so far 00:09:13.55\00:09:18.89 from the gospel of Matthew, there is one thing 00:09:18.92\00:09:20.92 that we understand. 00:09:20.96\00:09:22.46 Jesus came to save His people from their sins. 00:09:22.49\00:09:25.16 He died for us. 00:09:25.19\00:09:26.56 And He is offering to us that great salvation, 00:09:26.59\00:09:30.13 and that salvation, what Jesus did for us, is understandable, 00:09:30.17\00:09:35.10 expensive, very expensive. 00:09:35.14\00:09:37.64 It cost the death of the Son of God. 00:09:37.67\00:09:40.38 But at the same time it is free. 00:09:40.41\00:09:42.94 It's not cheap; it's very expensive. 00:09:42.98\00:09:44.91 But it is freely offered to us. 00:09:44.95\00:09:48.48 As we went through the gospel of Matthew we could just touch 00:09:48.52\00:09:54.12 here and there some texts. 00:09:54.16\00:09:56.06 We could not cover all the Biblical texts. 00:09:56.09\00:10:00.26 And the purpose of this series was not to instruct us, 00:10:00.30\00:10:03.77 and to tell us everything, that we can know about Jesus 00:10:03.80\00:10:07.20 from the gospel of Matthew. 00:10:07.24\00:10:08.64 It's simply to stimulate us; to move us for further study. 00:10:08.67\00:10:12.64 Am I correct, Glenn? 00:10:12.67\00:10:14.71 We've really been just on the edges of an ocean of truth. Yes. 00:10:14.74\00:10:18.35 And we're humbled by this experience. 00:10:18.81\00:10:21.02 I want to encourage you, viewer. 00:10:21.05\00:10:22.78 Spend some time in God's Word; dig deeper. 00:10:22.82\00:10:25.49 That's the whole purpose of this Books of the Book series; 00:10:25.52\00:10:28.69 to have us go deeper into God's Word. 00:10:28.72\00:10:30.69 There's so much more to explore. 00:10:30.73\00:10:32.66 But, Ranko, if I may, we talked about the close of the age. 00:10:32.69\00:10:38.00 Now Matthew doesn't go into that close of the age, 00:10:38.03\00:10:41.07 but we've got to go to Revelation for a little bit. 00:10:41.10\00:10:44.54 How does this story end? 00:10:44.57\00:10:47.28 You see, during this series we try to have a glimpse 00:10:47.31\00:10:51.71 into the face of Jesus. 00:10:51.75\00:10:54.62 I wonder how the disciples felt, you know, watching that 00:10:54.65\00:10:58.89 face of Jesus from day to day, from day to day. 00:10:58.92\00:11:02.72 There is one special song that I cherish. 00:11:02.76\00:11:06.63 I like to listen to that song. 00:11:06.66\00:11:08.16 I was not there in that multitude watching people 00:11:08.20\00:11:13.44 ascending there to the heavenly places. 00:11:13.47\00:11:15.67 I wonder how the disciples felt when Jesus was ascending there 00:11:15.70\00:11:18.97 to the heavenly places. 00:11:19.01\00:11:20.38 But certainly I want to be in that multitude who see Jesus 00:11:20.41\00:11:27.48 when He comes down from heaven for the second time. 00:11:27.52\00:11:31.95 As you mentioned in the book of Revelation, in Chapter 21 00:11:31.99\00:11:35.56 and in Chapter 22, we read that one day we will have that great 00:11:35.59\00:11:41.20 opportunity and privilege to watch and to see the face of 00:11:41.23\00:11:45.83 Jesus and to watch that face through all eternity. 00:11:45.87\00:11:48.24 What a privilege! 00:11:48.27\00:11:49.84 I want to be sure to be there. 00:11:49.87\00:11:51.91 There's nothing in this world that would make me want to 00:11:51.94\00:11:56.41 miss that experience of seeing my Savior face to face. 00:11:56.44\00:11:59.95 And, Glenn, we will not have a need of the gospel of Matthew, 00:12:00.05\00:12:05.99 or Luke, or Mark, or John any longer. 00:12:06.02\00:12:09.66 We don't need that any longer because we will see Him 00:12:09.69\00:12:13.23 face to face. 00:12:13.26\00:12:14.60 We've been looking, as Paul says, through the glass darkly. 00:12:14.63\00:12:19.40 But there will come a day when that, the sickness, the disease, 00:12:19.43\00:12:26.37 all those things that Revelation 21 and 22 talks about; 00:12:26.41\00:12:29.41 it'll be a new day, a new world, but the same Savior. 00:12:29.44\00:12:33.78 We see here how the Holy Spirit used one person who had a very, 00:12:33.82\00:12:39.72 very problematic past: a tax collector 00:12:39.75\00:12:41.62 by the name of Matthew. 00:12:41.66\00:12:43.22 He used his talents, inspired him, motivated him, to write 00:12:43.26\00:12:49.00 that account of the life of Jesus. 00:12:49.03\00:12:51.27 Please take this gospel and study for yourself to get much 00:12:51.30\00:12:56.74 deeper insight into the life of Jesus, until He comes again, 00:12:56.77\00:13:01.21 and we'll be with Him through all eternity. 00:13:01.24\00:13:03.61
