Welcome to the Books of the Book. 00:00:18.98\00:00:20.68 We're exploring the gospel of Matthew, and that exploration 00:00:20.72\00:00:24.05 has brought us all the way down to Chapter 28. 00:00:24.09\00:00:27.86 We're going to be exploring this last chapter of the gospel 00:00:27.89\00:00:31.43 of Matthew. 00:00:31.46\00:00:32.83 I'm Glenn Russell, Professor of Religion at Andrews University, 00:00:32.86\00:00:35.50 here with friend and colleague, Professor Ranko Stefanovic, 00:00:35.53\00:00:39.37 who teaches at the Theological Seminary at Andrews University. 00:00:39.40\00:00:42.70 Ranko, it's hard to believe that we've been following Jesus here 00:00:42.74\00:00:46.88 into the 28th Chapter. 00:00:46.91\00:00:48.64 It's a wonderful journey, and although we want to press 00:00:48.68\00:00:52.65 into the text, I also want to say, thank you to the viewers, 00:00:52.68\00:00:56.62 and thank you to 3ABN. 00:00:56.65\00:00:58.02 It's just been a joy to partner together here. 00:00:58.05\00:01:00.76 This experience of studying scripture in-depth; 00:01:00.79\00:01:03.99 what a wonderful series idea! 00:01:04.03\00:01:06.33 You don't want to miss all the other series on the other books 00:01:06.36\00:01:09.03 of the scripture. 00:01:09.06\00:01:10.43 May God bless this ministry of 3ABN, and this series 00:01:10.47\00:01:13.57 in a very special way. 00:01:13.60\00:01:14.97 Wouldn't you agree Ranko? 00:01:15.00\00:01:16.37 Glenn, there is something I can with confidence, 00:01:16.40\00:01:19.51 We were here taping a series on the life of Jesus according to 00:01:19.54\00:01:23.51 the gospel of Matthew. 00:01:23.55\00:01:24.91 But being here with all these wonderful people at 3ABN; 00:01:24.95\00:01:29.08 actually seeing on their faces the reflection of Jesus' 00:01:29.12\00:01:33.46 character and His love; this is actually how I felt during these 00:01:33.49\00:01:37.13 days, taping, taping this series and being with them. 00:01:37.16\00:01:39.89 I really, really appreciate their ministry; 00:01:39.93\00:01:42.53 what they are doing. 00:01:42.56\00:01:43.93 Amen. 00:01:43.97\00:01:45.33 And one more time, let's get into God's Word with prayer. 00:01:45.37\00:01:47.77 Let's bow together. 00:01:47.80\00:01:49.17 Father we thank You for the privilege of studying Your Word. 00:01:49.20\00:01:53.11 We have the freedom to take Your Word and read it, 00:01:53.14\00:01:55.98 ponder it, pray over it, wrestle with it, struggle to understand 00:01:56.01\00:02:01.02 it, but most of all be moved, transformed, 00:02:01.05\00:02:04.19 and changed by Your Word. 00:02:04.22\00:02:05.59 Thank You for this privilege we have. 00:02:05.62\00:02:07.89 In Jesus' name, Amen. 00:02:07.92\00:02:09.66 Amen. 00:02:09.69\00:02:11.06 We're at the 28th Chapter. 00:02:11.09\00:02:14.00 We've been noticing, pondering, reflecting, meditating, 00:02:14.00\00:02:19.57 on those sacred scenes of Jesus on the cross. 00:02:19.60\00:02:24.71 And we find at last that Jesus breathes His last, 00:02:24.74\00:02:29.68 and He's buried. 00:02:29.71\00:02:31.08 There's this special resurrection that we've 00:02:31.11\00:02:32.88 talked about. 00:02:32.91\00:02:34.28 And now let's see the rest of the story, because Christianity 00:02:34.32\00:02:38.15 doesn't end with the cross. 00:02:38.19\00:02:39.55 Yeah. 00:02:39.59\00:02:40.96 Glenn, before we go to Chapter 28, let's just reflect a little 00:02:40.99\00:02:45.59 bit on the last several verses of Chapter 27. 00:02:45.63\00:02:50.83 We saw when Jesus was buried, praise God, when Jesus died, 00:02:50.87\00:02:57.57 okay, now He was to be buried. 00:02:57.61\00:02:59.41 God did not allow to happen to Jesus' body what usually 00:02:59.44\00:03:04.05 happened to the criminals. 00:03:04.08\00:03:05.45 The Bible says that the person by the name of Joseph, 00:03:05.48\00:03:10.82 from Arimathea, who was evidently a rich Pharisee. 00:03:10.85\00:03:15.39 According to the other gospels he was joined with Nicodemus. 00:03:15.42\00:03:19.69 They came. 00:03:19.73\00:03:21.03 They were very rich people, believe me. 00:03:21.06\00:03:22.86 They paid a large amount of money to Pilate in order to 00:03:22.90\00:03:28.37 get the body of Jesus, and to prepare His body 00:03:28.40\00:03:33.61 for a proper burial. 00:03:33.64\00:03:35.41 And again, according to prophecy, He's laid in a new 00:03:35.44\00:03:37.68 tomb, as prophecy had said, wrapped and laid there 00:03:37.71\00:03:42.68 in the tomb that Friday on the preparation day, as it says in 00:03:42.72\00:03:46.55 Verse 62. 00:03:46.59\00:03:47.96 It's a tragic thing to think that those who crucified 00:03:47.99\00:03:52.16 rushed home to keep the Sabbath, with such a startling lack of 00:03:52.19\00:03:57.07 understanding of the events that they had been part of. 00:03:57.10\00:03:59.33 So when did this happen? 00:03:59.37\00:04:00.84 It happened before the sunset on Friday. 00:04:00.87\00:04:04.81 According to the Biblical counting is days begin 00:04:04.84\00:04:10.38 with sunset. 00:04:10.41\00:04:13.21 So Jesus was buried and now the Sabbath began. 00:04:13.25\00:04:20.92 When we go to Chapter 28, Verse 1, it was after 00:04:20.96\00:04:27.40 the Sabbath. 00:04:27.46\00:04:29.60 Okay? 00:04:29.63\00:04:31.00 At the beginning of the new week. 00:04:31.03\00:04:33.10 On the first day of the week there is the resurrection. 00:04:33.13\00:04:36.30 Where is Jesus between Friday and Sunday? 00:04:36.34\00:04:40.71 He is in the tomb. 00:04:40.74\00:04:43.31 The gospel of Luke, Chapter 23, the last verses, provide some 00:04:43.35\00:04:48.28 additional information there that Jesus was actually arrested 00:04:48.32\00:04:54.79 on the Sabbath day according to the law. 00:04:54.82\00:04:57.86 Here we have a fantastic picture. 00:04:57.89\00:05:00.23 We are reminded in the book of Genesis, Chapters 1 and 2, 00:05:00.26\00:05:09.84 that when God created the heaven and earth in six days, 00:05:09.87\00:05:15.38 then God rested on the Sabbath day after that weeks work. 00:05:15.41\00:05:24.69 So now the same God, who has become flesh, 00:05:24.72\00:05:29.62 after accomplishing His mission of re-creation, 00:05:29.66\00:05:35.16 mission of redemption, okay. 00:05:35.20\00:05:38.33 On Friday He goes to rest. 00:05:38.37\00:05:41.40 Unfortunately, many Christians are using arguments that Sunday 00:05:41.44\00:05:46.91 is a very important day to celebrate and to rest, 00:05:46.94\00:05:49.98 and that Sunday replaced the Sabbath because of Jesus' 00:05:50.01\00:05:53.25 resurrection. 00:05:53.28\00:05:54.65 However, the gospels clearly, clearly state that the reason 00:05:54.68\00:05:59.29 why Jesus did not resurrect on the Sabbath was because He kept 00:05:59.32\00:06:03.56 the sanctity of the Sabbath according to the law. 00:06:03.59\00:06:07.20 He resurrected on Sunday because Sunday is the day of work. 00:06:07.23\00:06:12.03 But He rested according to the law of God following the path 00:06:12.07\00:06:16.60 of work He did at the beginning, after the creation week when He 00:06:16.64\00:06:20.84 rested on the Sabbath. 00:06:20.88\00:06:22.34 So it's after the Sabbath toward the dawn of the first day 00:06:22.38\00:06:25.25 of the week. 00:06:25.28\00:06:26.65 So we don't need to wonder when Sabbath is. 00:06:26.68\00:06:28.05 Yes. 00:06:28.08\00:06:29.45 It's before the first day; it's the end of the week. 00:06:29.48\00:06:30.85 Alright, if I might read Matthew 28... 00:06:30.89\00:06:33.12 Please. 00:06:33.15\00:06:34.52 ...Verse 1 and following; Now after the Sabbath toward the 00:06:34.56\00:06:36.56 dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene 00:06:36.59\00:06:38.59 and the other Mary went to see the sepulcher. 00:06:38.63\00:06:40.93 You see they'd buried Him. 00:06:40.96\00:06:42.40 They hadn't had a chance to anoint Him, and embalm Him, 00:06:42.43\00:06:46.07 and prepare Him fully for His burial. 00:06:46.10\00:06:48.64 And we should pause and notice that... 00:06:48.67\00:06:50.24 It was done in a great rush. 00:06:50.27\00:06:51.87 ...in a hurry, yes, and they wanted to finish the job. 00:06:51.91\00:06:54.34 Yes. 00:06:54.38\00:06:55.74 And, of course, burial is very important to a Hebrew. 00:06:55.78\00:06:57.71 Yeah. 00:06:57.75\00:06:59.11 What is done to a body when somebody dies is very; 00:06:59.15\00:07:00.78 it's important to all of us emotionally, but especially 00:07:00.82\00:07:03.02 for a Hebrew. 00:07:03.05\00:07:04.42 Even Joseph when he died said take care of my bones. 00:07:04.45\00:07:06.55 You know, take them up to... 00:07:06.59\00:07:07.96 And very special people would do it; trained people 00:07:07.99\00:07:10.69 for that job. 00:07:10.73\00:07:12.09 They knew how to do it. 00:07:12.13\00:07:13.50 So they'd come to do this sad work. 00:07:13.53\00:07:16.36 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: and an angel 00:07:16.40\00:07:18.93 of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back 00:07:18.97\00:07:21.57 the stone and sat upon it. 00:07:21.60\00:07:23.34 We just have to say, this is another marvelous case of 00:07:23.37\00:07:26.78 scriptures brevity. 00:07:26.81\00:07:28.18 If you and I were writing all the details, imagine, 00:07:28.21\00:07:31.55 there's a great earthquake, and an angel of the Lord descends 00:07:31.58\00:07:35.12 from heaven. 00:07:35.15\00:07:36.52 And, you know Ranko, I just think that all the angels wanted 00:07:36.55\00:07:39.75 to have that opportunity. 00:07:39.79\00:07:41.16 Oh yeah! 00:07:41.19\00:07:42.56 I bet when God the Father said, I need someone to go, 00:07:42.59\00:07:44.59 they all raised their hand. 00:07:44.63\00:07:45.99 I mean that's my imagination. 00:07:46.03\00:07:47.40 They all wanted to go and release our Savior. 00:07:47.40\00:07:50.43 The angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and rolled back 00:07:50.47\00:07:52.90 the stone, and then he sat upon it. 00:07:52.93\00:07:54.37 His appearance was like lightening; 00:07:54.40\00:07:55.87 his raiment was white as snow. 00:07:55.90\00:07:58.01 For fear of him the guards trembled and became 00:07:58.04\00:08:00.91 like dead men. 00:08:00.94\00:08:02.31 It's interesting to notice everything that was done 00:08:02.34\00:08:05.25 to keep Jesus in the tomb becomes proof that He was raised 00:08:05.28\00:08:09.42 from the tomb. 00:08:09.45\00:08:10.82 Glenn, can we understand Satan? 00:08:10.85\00:08:12.22 Please tell; explain to me. 00:08:14.32\00:08:18.03 Constantly during 31/2 years of Jesus' ministry 00:08:18.79\00:08:22.56 Satan is doing everything to prevent Jesus from going 00:08:22.60\00:08:26.33 to the cross. 00:08:26.37\00:08:27.70 Yes. 00:08:27.74\00:08:29.10 Finally Jesus is on the cross and Satan is doing everything 00:08:29.14\00:08:32.27 to pull Him down from the cross. 00:08:32.31\00:08:35.18 Remember that; not to die. 00:08:35.21\00:08:37.35 Now finally Jesus dies and He's in the tomb. 00:08:37.38\00:08:39.71 Now he does everything to keep Jesus there in the tomb. 00:08:39.75\00:08:43.75 And look what was done. 00:08:43.79\00:08:45.15 He was placed in the tomb. 00:08:45.19\00:08:46.65 There's a seal placed upon it. 00:08:46.69\00:08:48.09 There's soldiers placed around it. 00:08:48.12\00:08:50.09 Some people today wonder, did the resurrection really happen? 00:08:50.13\00:08:53.70 Christianity is based on historical events, Ranko. 00:08:53.73\00:08:57.37 If the resurrection didn't take place, what does Paul say? 00:08:57.40\00:09:01.57 What benefit is that? 00:09:01.60\00:09:03.81 We have no reason for our faith. 00:09:03.84\00:09:05.21 If Jesus did not resurrect then there is no resurrection. 00:09:05.24\00:09:08.58 And, unfortunately, that's the reason why many Christians 00:09:08.61\00:09:12.18 do not talk about the resurrection. 00:09:12.21\00:09:13.95 It's because of that; they doubt. 00:09:13.98\00:09:16.82 They have a problem with Jesus' resurrection. 00:09:16.85\00:09:19.35 To deny the resurrection of Jesus is to deny the general 00:09:19.39\00:09:22.52 resurrection that one day God's people will experience 00:09:22.56\00:09:27.23 at the Second Coming of Christ. 00:09:27.30\00:09:28.63 So we have a Centurion and soldiers guarding a dead body, 00:09:28.66\00:09:31.73 and the angel comes. 00:09:33.54\00:09:35.24 And the other gospels give us more details. 00:09:35.27\00:09:38.34 Matthew does not dwell on those. 00:09:38.37\00:09:39.94 But Matthew introduces us to the fact that an angel remains 00:09:39.97\00:09:44.41 there and says to the women, Don't be afraid. 00:09:44.45\00:09:47.08 I know you seek Jesus who was crucified. 00:09:47.12\00:09:50.15 By the way, isn't that who we should all seek; 00:09:50.19\00:09:52.59 Jesus who was crucified? 00:09:52.62\00:09:54.09 He is not here: for he has risen as he said. 00:09:54.12\00:09:57.19 Come, and see the place where he lay. 00:09:57.23\00:09:58.83 Then quickly go and tell his disciples. 00:09:58.86\00:10:01.00 Wasn't it strange that it's a woman who's the first one 00:10:01.03\00:10:04.20 to give testimony? 00:10:04.23\00:10:05.60 Actually, the gospel of Matthew begins with women. 00:10:05.63\00:10:09.50 Yes. 00:10:09.54\00:10:10.91 Remember they're included in genealogy. 00:10:10.94\00:10:12.31 Now these women are the first ones to go there to the tomb, 00:10:12.34\00:10:19.08 and to carry the news all around that the Savior is not there. 00:10:19.11\00:10:24.42 By the way, one of the most touching moments for me was when 00:10:24.45\00:10:27.79 I was there in Jerusalem. 00:10:27.82\00:10:29.42 There is a place that some people thought could be 00:10:29.46\00:10:37.23 the tomb of Jesus. 00:10:37.27\00:10:39.87 Today we know that it was not the tomb of Jesus. 00:10:39.90\00:10:42.14 But, you know, the garden... 00:10:42.17\00:10:44.11 The very scene... 00:10:44.14\00:10:45.51 It's very nice to go there. 00:10:45.54\00:10:47.11 You know that it did not happen there. 00:10:47.14\00:10:48.68 But there is something that I still visualize in my eyes 00:10:48.71\00:10:52.75 that tomb that they discovered with that, you know, 00:10:52.78\00:10:56.62 stone that was rolled over the entrance there. 00:10:56.65\00:10:59.12 But there is something that they made there in the 00:10:59.15\00:11:00.79 inscription; it's very emotional. 00:11:00.82\00:11:02.76 They said, He's not here. 00:11:02.79\00:11:05.73 He is risen. 00:11:05.76\00:11:07.13 When you look there, Glenn, you know you and me, we know many, 00:11:07.13\00:11:13.34 many religions in this world. 00:11:13.37\00:11:15.60 And I grew up among people who were not Christians. 00:11:15.64\00:11:20.54 I lived in different parts of the world; 00:11:20.58\00:11:23.38 living among people of different religions. 00:11:23.41\00:11:25.95 And we talked about their founders who were really 00:11:25.98\00:11:28.42 good, good, good men. 00:11:28.45\00:11:30.29 But they would always point to their tombs 00:11:30.32\00:11:33.05 where they were buried. 00:11:33.09\00:11:34.46 They'd go and they made pilgrimages there, etc. 00:11:34.49\00:11:36.59 It's so nice when I talk about the founder of my religion. 00:11:36.62\00:11:42.86 To tell them, I'm sorry. 00:11:42.90\00:11:44.97 I cannot make any pilgrimage. 00:11:45.00\00:11:47.17 I cannot go to His tomb. 00:11:47.20\00:11:49.54 He's not there! 00:11:49.57\00:11:51.54 He's not at the tomb! 00:11:51.57\00:11:52.94 It's empty! 00:11:52.97\00:11:54.34 Actually, I don't need to make a pilgrimage. 00:11:54.38\00:11:56.54 Uh huh. 00:11:56.58\00:11:57.95 Even here, as we are taping, wherever I go I can lift my head 00:11:57.98\00:12:03.92 there toward Him, and give Him thanks for what He did 00:12:03.95\00:12:07.06 because He is alive! 00:12:07.09\00:12:09.39 The reality of the cross is verified by the stone being 00:12:09.42\00:12:15.26 rolled, you know, Ranko some people say, well, maybe He 00:12:15.30\00:12:18.43 fainted; maybe He just went unconscious for awhile 00:12:18.47\00:12:22.27 and came back. 00:12:22.30\00:12:23.67 How would He roll the stone away after being scourged? 00:12:23.71\00:12:25.61 Some other people say, Maybe it was in a different place. 00:12:25.64\00:12:28.51 Why didn't they present the body? 00:12:28.54\00:12:31.01 The resurrection of Jesus is a great dilemma for the leaders 00:12:31.05\00:12:34.85 of the people. 00:12:34.88\00:12:36.25 Actually, the gospel writers, we're not just talking about 00:12:36.28\00:12:38.09 the gospel of Matthew, we are talking in general terms. 00:12:38.12\00:12:40.62 They want to assure us that Jesus indeed died. 00:12:40.66\00:12:45.46 How do you know that? 00:12:45.49\00:12:46.86 They said, you know, the bodies of the crucified people could 00:12:46.90\00:12:54.87 not be on the cross during the Sabbath day 00:12:54.90\00:12:57.41 or during the festivals. 00:12:57.44\00:12:58.81 That's why Pilot ordered to break the bones of those people, 00:12:58.84\00:13:02.64 you know, so they could not support themselves any longer 00:13:02.68\00:13:06.41 and finally they would die. 00:13:06.45\00:13:09.15 By the way, that young man, John's son, Ezekiel, between 00:13:09.18\00:13:14.02 that we just mentioned was; his bones were broken. 00:13:14.06\00:13:17.93 So it confirms what we read there in the gospels. 00:13:17.99\00:13:21.73 So they broke the bones of those two criminals. 00:13:21.76\00:13:25.23 They came to Jesus; they saw that he died already. 00:13:25.27\00:13:28.74 Keep in mind, they are experts. 00:13:28.77\00:13:30.14 They know if the person is alive or not. 00:13:30.17\00:13:31.94 But in order to confirm the death of Jesus; actually they 00:13:31.97\00:13:35.04 pierce His body. 00:13:35.08\00:13:36.44 And according to the gospel of John, water mixed with blood, 00:13:36.48\00:13:39.78 which was the sign of death, actually came out of the body 00:13:39.81\00:13:43.45 of Jesus. 00:13:43.49\00:13:44.85 So it was very clear that Jesus was dead when He was buried. 00:13:44.89\00:13:47.92 And if you've had your side pierced, and your hands nailed, 00:13:47.96\00:13:51.26 then your ankles driven through with a spike, and you've been 00:13:51.29\00:13:54.56 scourged, there's no way; He was dead. 00:13:54.60\00:13:58.43 There's no question about it. 00:13:58.47\00:13:59.83 The Romans were experts at killing people. 00:13:59.87\00:14:01.40 Jesus was dead. 00:14:01.44\00:14:02.80 But we could say much more about that. 00:14:02.84\00:14:04.54 Let's move, Ranko to... 00:14:04.57\00:14:05.94 Till after the break. 00:14:05.97\00:14:07.34 Let's move to the impact of the resurrection, 00:14:07.38\00:14:11.21 and other evidences. 00:14:11.28\00:14:12.88 There were others who saw the risen Lord afterwards. 00:14:12.91\00:14:15.38 We're going to come back to that right after our break. 00:14:15.42\00:14:17.85 We'll be right back. 00:14:17.89\00:14:19.25
