We're back discovering and exploring the marvelous 00:00:01.56\00:00:05.70 love of Jesus on the cross for you and for me. 00:00:05.73\00:00:08.57 Let's continue on with Matthew Chapter 27. 00:00:08.60\00:00:12.31 Jesus comes to the place of the cross. 00:00:12.34\00:00:14.71 It's early morning, it says here 00:00:14.74\00:00:18.41 in verse 45, the sixth hour. 00:00:18.45\00:00:20.65 What time would that be, Ranko? 00:00:20.68\00:00:22.05 Sixth hour would be noon. Because Jews, 00:00:22.08\00:00:26.02 they count the time from 6 in the morning. 00:00:26.05\00:00:28.39 But some things that happened earlier in the morning, 00:00:28.42\00:00:30.99 let's go back and notice. 00:00:31.03\00:00:32.39 He arrives there at the cross and he is nailed to the cross 00:00:32.43\00:00:37.47 and it's interesting to notice how the people respond. 00:00:37.50\00:00:41.80 And in verse 39 of Mathew 27, 00:00:41.84\00:00:44.24 "And those who passed by deride him, 00:00:44.27\00:00:46.27 wagging their heads saying, 00:00:46.31\00:00:47.68 He who would destroy the temple 00:00:47.71\00:00:49.08 and build in three days, save yourself 00:00:49.11\00:00:50.88 If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross." 00:00:50.91\00:00:53.21 What they are saying is really true. 00:00:53.25\00:00:55.08 He couldn't be the Savior and come down from the cross. 00:00:55.12\00:00:58.99 Actually the more serious statement is, 00:00:59.02\00:01:00.82 the one who helped others, he cannot help himself. 00:01:00.86\00:01:05.53 That was actually what Jesus mission was, 00:01:05.56\00:01:08.20 to come to save us, but he could not use 00:01:08.23\00:01:11.23 His divine prerogative to help himself. 00:01:11.27\00:01:18.64 And a few technical things which has to mention is, 00:01:18.67\00:01:21.71 we go to Jerusalem, we can be very much certain 00:01:21.74\00:01:26.98 about the place where Jesus was crucified. 00:01:27.02\00:01:30.22 It's called here Golgotha 00:01:30.25\00:01:32.35 or Calvary, which is one Latin, 00:01:32.39\00:01:34.62 another one is Aramaic, is the same place. 00:01:34.66\00:01:39.13 It's probably the place that is marked today 00:01:39.16\00:01:41.20 by the church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. 00:01:41.23\00:01:45.20 It's most likely-- their own evidences were that, 00:01:45.23\00:01:48.34 that place was outside of the city wall. 00:01:48.37\00:01:53.34 Second thing is Jesus was on the cross 00:01:53.38\00:01:56.34 for about six hours He was crucified 00:01:56.38\00:02:01.05 at the 3rd hour, which was 9 in the morning. 00:02:01.08\00:02:04.22 So the trial was very early in the morning. 00:02:04.25\00:02:07.22 And He died at 9 hour, 00:02:07.26\00:02:11.06 which was actually 3 in the afternoon. 00:02:11.09\00:02:13.86 So, he was--actually, it's very interesting is, 00:02:13.90\00:02:17.63 when we read the gospels, 00:02:17.67\00:02:19.77 the gospels did not put too much emphasis 00:02:19.80\00:02:22.70 on the physical suffering of Jesus. 00:02:22.74\00:02:25.31 For instance, Gibson's movie, it's there. 00:02:25.34\00:02:28.51 Jesus was much shorter time 00:02:28.54\00:02:33.08 on the cross than other criminals. 00:02:33.11\00:02:34.48 Usually criminals would be there 00:02:34.52\00:02:36.28 on the cross for several days. 00:02:36.32\00:02:38.49 In fact, that's why the Roman soldiers 00:02:38.52\00:02:40.02 came to break the legs. To break the legs. 00:02:40.06\00:02:41.66 So they couldn't flee away overnight or something. 00:02:41.69\00:02:43.46 But they were surprised actually that Jesus was there 00:02:43.49\00:02:46.76 when they approached after six hours. 00:02:46.80\00:02:48.33 It was very unusual, what is telling us 00:02:48.36\00:02:51.00 that the emphasis on the gospel 00:02:51.03\00:02:52.93 is not on the physical suffering of Jesus. 00:02:52.97\00:02:56.17 It was on his mental and emotional. 00:02:56.20\00:02:58.77 When Jesus died, it was not just 00:02:58.81\00:03:01.74 because of the physical suffering. 00:03:01.78\00:03:04.15 That famous phrase that Jesus died of broken heart, 00:03:04.18\00:03:08.45 it was the weight of the sins of the humanity 00:03:08.48\00:03:11.45 that was placed on Him and He died 00:03:11.49\00:03:15.16 because of the broken heart, you know, 00:03:15.19\00:03:17.93 to save people from their sins. 00:03:17.96\00:03:20.06 Ranko, you mentioned that we have very little 00:03:20.10\00:03:21.96 evidence of exactly how crucifixion was. 00:03:22.00\00:03:24.77 But there has been a discovery that can give us 00:03:24.80\00:03:27.04 some light on this very important subject. 00:03:27.07\00:03:29.44 Tell us about it. Yes, praise God. 00:03:29.47\00:03:31.94 We have at least one finding from the first century 00:03:31.97\00:03:39.41 that give us little bit of glimpse into how terrible 00:03:39.45\00:03:45.35 and agonizing the experience of crucified 00:03:45.39\00:03:48.19 people on the cross was. 00:03:48.22\00:03:49.89 Actually, in 1968, a discovery 00:03:49.92\00:03:53.80 in Jerusalem was found of the -- 00:03:53.83\00:03:57.67 containing bones of a young man. 00:03:57.70\00:04:01.70 You know even his name, 00:04:01.74\00:04:03.10 by name of John the son of Eleazar. 00:04:03.14\00:04:06.81 He was crucified in the first century. 00:04:06.84\00:04:09.24 We mentioned already that crucified 00:04:09.28\00:04:12.28 people were not allowed to be buried. 00:04:12.31\00:04:16.05 But most likely the family of this young man, 00:04:16.08\00:04:20.36 his parents, were very rich. 00:04:20.39\00:04:23.02 So they were able to bribe the Roman authorities 00:04:23.06\00:04:26.80 and to purchase the body of their son 00:04:26.83\00:04:31.40 and to bury him properly. By the way, 00:04:31.43\00:04:34.60 when I was in Jerusalem, if you go 00:04:34.64\00:04:36.04 to the Rockefeller Museum there, 00:04:36.07\00:04:37.71 we see the remnants of the bones of that young man 00:04:37.74\00:04:41.08 and we learn something. 00:04:41.11\00:04:42.64 Says that he was fastened to the cross with three nails. 00:04:42.68\00:04:48.25 Okay? Two of them were on the forearm. 00:04:48.28\00:04:50.72 So it was not here. It was here, right here. 00:04:50.75\00:04:53.39 Because here if you put the nail, 00:04:53.42\00:04:55.99 there is not too much, I mean, 00:04:56.02\00:04:57.39 there is a pain but not too much. 00:04:57.43\00:04:58.76 When you put here, it's agonizing pain. 00:04:58.79\00:05:02.10 But I still cannot erase from my mind 00:05:02.13\00:05:07.40 what I saw about the third nail. 00:05:07.44\00:05:10.47 And please I'd like to demonstrate a little bit-- 00:05:10.51\00:05:12.61 So you're talking about nails in the feet. 00:05:12.64\00:05:14.51 Feet. Usually, people think that the nail went here, 00:05:14.54\00:05:18.41 but actually he was fastened on the cross and put away. 00:05:18.45\00:05:22.75 His body was completely twisted 00:05:22.78\00:05:26.22 and very huge nail was put here, 00:05:26.25\00:05:29.96 through this bone here, through this joint here 00:05:29.99\00:05:32.79 and come here 00:05:32.83\00:05:34.30 and that's how He was nailed on the cross. 00:05:34.73\00:05:37.80 So can you imagine, I mean, 00:05:37.83\00:05:39.67 when he was hanging on that cross there. 00:05:39.70\00:05:43.17 When you go to the museum, 00:05:43.20\00:05:45.17 there is an astonishing scenery that you can see. 00:05:45.21\00:05:49.44 Evidently, they could not pull out the nail, 00:05:49.48\00:05:54.18 you know, to bury him. 00:05:54.22\00:05:55.88 So they cut the piece of the cross. 00:05:55.92\00:06:01.82 And it was in such condition that 00:06:01.86\00:06:03.63 this young man was buried. And of course, 00:06:03.66\00:06:07.36 one of the terrible things about 00:06:07.40\00:06:08.73 crucifixion was actually, a person couldn't breathe 00:06:08.76\00:06:11.50 and they would have to push themselves up. 00:06:11.53\00:06:14.04 Imagine with that spike through your ankles. 00:06:14.07\00:06:17.04 Actually, really, when the person 00:06:17.07\00:06:19.17 was on the cross, the person could easily die 00:06:19.21\00:06:21.08 because the pressure was so much, 00:06:21.11\00:06:22.81 he could not breathe. 00:06:22.84\00:06:24.21 So what they put there, on that vertical 00:06:24.25\00:06:29.62 beam on the cross, they would put here 00:06:29.65\00:06:31.39 support to keep the person alive as long as possible. 00:06:31.42\00:06:36.02 So that person would suffer and die in the agonizing pain. 00:06:36.06\00:06:40.33 But so many times when we watch 00:06:40.36\00:06:42.36 the picture of crucified Jesus on the cross, 00:06:42.40\00:06:45.23 it looks so nice that almost you like to be there. 00:06:45.27\00:06:48.47 But we have to understand that actually, 00:06:48.50\00:06:50.71 the person was stripped of the clothes, of the robes. 00:06:50.74\00:06:54.48 We read it clearly in the Gospel of Matthew 00:06:54.51\00:06:56.85 and other gospels. The person was on the cross 00:06:56.88\00:06:59.41 completely naked. 00:06:59.45\00:07:02.38 The humiliation was total. Actually, Glenn, 00:07:02.42\00:07:05.69 this is what explains what happened at noon, 00:07:05.72\00:07:08.82 actually, in the sixth hour. What do-- 00:07:08.86\00:07:10.96 If I may read Mathew 27 verse 45 and following. 00:07:10.99\00:07:14.93 "Now from the sixth hour there was darkness 00:07:14.93\00:07:17.10 over all the land until the ninth hour." 00:07:17.13\00:07:19.73 So let's remember, He's been on the cross for three hours, 00:07:19.77\00:07:22.40 now moves to the next stage 00:07:22.44\00:07:24.87 and darkness surrounds the cross. 00:07:24.91\00:07:26.51 So there was mocking, there was, you know, 00:07:26.54\00:07:29.28 laughing, torture, spitting on Jesus, 00:07:29.31\00:07:31.85 accusations, all kind. But now happened something, 00:07:31.88\00:07:34.48 what was that--Now we even see nature responding. 00:07:34.52\00:07:37.35 "About the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, 00:07:37.39\00:07:41.12 'Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?' That is, 'My God, My God, 00:07:41.16\00:07:45.39 why have you forsaken me?' 00:07:45.43\00:07:47.13 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, 00:07:47.20\00:07:49.53 This man is calling Elijah.' And one of them 00:07:49.56\00:07:51.97 at once ran and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar. 00:07:52.00\00:07:54.84 Put it on a reed and gave Him to drink. 00:07:54.87\00:07:56.60 But the others said, 'Wait, 00:07:56.64\00:07:58.01 let us see whether Elijah will come and save him. 00:07:58.04\00:08:00.84 '" What an attitude. So what happened at noon? 00:08:00.88\00:08:03.95 Darkness, why darkness? We have to understand 00:08:03.98\00:08:08.05 that the Father was still close to His son there. 00:08:08.08\00:08:11.05 So we have here the heaven's intervention, 00:08:11.09\00:08:13.49 even the sun darkened. Why? To cover Jesus, 00:08:13.52\00:08:18.69 to hide Him from the eyes of the people 00:08:18.73\00:08:21.26 being humiliated there on the cross. 00:08:21.30\00:08:23.16 So for three hours, 00:08:23.20\00:08:24.57 people could hardly even see Jesus. 00:08:24.60\00:08:27.47 The darkness was so dense there. 00:08:27.50\00:08:30.34 And, you know, we should pause right here to notice, 00:08:30.37\00:08:32.64 sometimes in our experience, 00:08:32.67\00:08:34.84 God may seem far away just like 00:08:34.88\00:08:37.05 He seemed so far from Jesus. 00:08:37.08\00:08:40.52 But He was right there beside. 00:08:40.55\00:08:42.28 The sin blotted His presence out. 00:08:42.32\00:08:45.49 But the Father was with the Son. 00:08:45.52\00:08:47.46 He never abandoned Jesus, 00:08:47.49\00:08:49.19 even though the experience was so difficult. 00:08:49.22\00:08:51.63 And we should remember that in our own lives, 00:08:51.66\00:08:53.19 sometimes we just can't see God. 00:08:53.23\00:08:55.10 It doesn't mean He's not there. 00:08:55.13\00:08:56.90 It means that there's a darkness that comes. 00:08:56.93\00:08:59.00 My Father, my Father, why have you forsaken me? 00:08:59.03\00:09:01.74 The Father did not forsake-- But He felt forsaken. 00:09:01.77\00:09:05.91 He couldn't see beyond the cross. 00:09:05.94\00:09:08.51 Only faith hung on. And, Glenn, 00:09:08.54\00:09:10.48 I would like to go to the final point. 00:09:10.51\00:09:12.61 And finally Jesus died. Verse 50, what was going on? 00:09:12.65\00:09:16.89 "And Jesus cried again with a loud voice, 00:09:16.92\00:09:18.92 and yielded up His spirit. 00:09:18.95\00:09:20.59 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, 00:09:20.62\00:09:22.86 from top to bottom. And the earth shook, 00:09:22.89\00:09:24.56 and the rocks were split. The tombs were opened. 00:09:24.59\00:09:27.03 And many bodies of the saints 00:09:27.03\00:09:28.60 who had fallen asleep were raised." 00:09:28.63\00:09:30.63 We should notice at the ninth hour, 00:09:30.67\00:09:33.30 at 3 o'clock, was the time of what, the Passover lamb? 00:09:33.34\00:09:36.00 Passover lamb. The slaying of the Lamb. 00:09:36.04\00:09:38.31 Has been fulfilled with Jesus-- 00:09:38.34\00:09:39.74 You know, for centuries, the Jewish people 00:09:39.77\00:09:44.25 were offering that sacrificial lamb on the altar 00:09:44.28\00:09:48.42 and with every Passover, they would eat that lamb 00:09:48.45\00:09:51.99 and take the blood and put there on the doorpost. 00:09:52.02\00:09:57.56 And now at the moment, you see that the Lamb of God, 00:09:57.59\00:10:02.33 the real Lamb finally died, 00:10:02.36\00:10:06.50 was offered on the altar 00:10:06.53\00:10:09.24 for the sins of all people who lived before. 00:10:09.27\00:10:12.07 You remember? Yes. 00:10:12.11\00:10:13.48 The beginning of the gospel of Matthew, 00:10:13.51\00:10:14.88 Jesus came to save His people from their sins. 00:10:14.91\00:10:17.41 Now that salvation is there provided, and now, 00:10:17.45\00:10:20.62 all the function of the temple, 00:10:20.65\00:10:22.22 all the lessons that the temple-- 00:10:23.85\00:10:25.69 that the rituals in the temple were teaching people 00:10:25.72\00:10:29.19 actually came to the end. 00:10:29.22\00:10:30.59 You don't need anymore animal sacrifices. 00:10:30.63\00:10:33.03 You don't need the animal blood because 00:10:33.06\00:10:35.10 now the live sacrifice, the live sacrifice of 00:10:35.13\00:10:38.53 Jesus Christhas been offer. 00:10:38.57\00:10:39.93 But there is also the second point. 00:10:39.97\00:10:41.70 When Jesus died, there was an earthquake. 00:10:41.74\00:10:43.97 What happened, Glenn, with the earthquake? 00:10:44.01\00:10:46.01 This is a detail that's often neglected. 00:10:46.04\00:10:47.98 The earth shook, and verse 51 "The tombs were opened. 00:10:48.01\00:10:51.58 And many bodies of the saints 00:10:51.61\00:10:52.98 who had fallen asleep were raised. 00:10:53.01\00:10:54.85 Coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, 00:10:54.88\00:10:57.39 they went into the holy city and appeared to many." 00:10:57.42\00:11:00.56 It's very hard to deal here with this text 00:11:00.59\00:11:02.79 because it's not clear 00:11:02.82\00:11:04.26 if those people were resurrected 00:11:04.29\00:11:07.60 at the moment Jesus died 00:11:07.60\00:11:08.96 or at the time of His resurrection. 00:11:09.00\00:11:11.37 When I look Greek text carefully, 00:11:11.40\00:11:14.20 it indicates the moment Jesus died, 00:11:14.24\00:11:16.74 the tombs were opened and they resurrected 00:11:16.77\00:11:20.94 most likely at the resurrection of Jesus, 00:11:20.98\00:11:24.01 which was on Sunday. 00:11:24.05\00:11:25.41 They went there to Jerusalem to show themselves 00:11:25.45\00:11:28.55 there to the people and actually this group-- 00:11:28.58\00:11:32.72 people were very much curious about. 00:11:32.75\00:11:35.12 Who were those people? And the few things 00:11:35.16\00:11:39.23 that the rest of the Bible indicates was, 00:11:39.26\00:11:42.90 most likely we are dealing here 00:11:42.93\00:11:44.70 with the prominent 00:11:44.73\00:11:47.57 personalities of the Old Testament. 00:11:47.60\00:11:50.61 Who knows? Maybe David, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, 00:11:50.64\00:11:54.31 prominent personalities of the Old Testament. 00:11:54.34\00:11:56.78 They were resurrected. What did they do? 00:11:56.81\00:11:59.58 They went there to Jerusalem, telling people, 00:11:59.61\00:12:02.72 you crucified the promised one. 00:12:02.75\00:12:04.69 You see we are talking about the day of Pentecost, 00:12:04.72\00:12:08.12 how 3,000 people responded, 5,000 people responded. 00:12:08.16\00:12:12.79 There was not any emotional outbreak at Peter's preaching 00:12:12.83\00:12:17.00 Actually, those people repented 00:12:17.03\00:12:18.80 and the ground was prepare with powerful 00:12:18.83\00:12:22.67 testimony of this resurrected saints. 00:12:22.70\00:12:25.14 Just to the viewers, most likely, 00:12:25.17\00:12:27.71 these resurrected saints, they ascended with Jesus 00:12:27.74\00:12:31.98 to the heavenly places, according to Ephesians 00:12:32.01\00:12:34.92 Chapter 4 and they were the ones 00:12:34.95\00:12:37.19 presented in the Book of Revelation as 24 elders 00:12:37.22\00:12:40.49 there before the throne of God. You go. 00:12:40.52\00:12:43.29 So we see this incredible experience. 00:12:43.32\00:12:46.63 Jesus had said I have the keys of heaven 00:12:46.66\00:12:50.20 and of death and when He dies the graves open. 00:12:50.23\00:12:53.77 Actually, these resurrected saints were the first 00:12:53.80\00:12:57.14 fruit of Jesus' resurrection, telling us that 00:12:57.17\00:13:01.68 one day we accept today Jesus Christ as our Savior. 00:13:01.71\00:13:04.91 We will one day resurrect, 00:13:04.95\00:13:06.98 and be with Jesus there in the heavenly 00:13:07.02\00:13:09.28 places through all eternity. Amen. 00:13:09.32\00:13:11.05
