Welcome back. 00:00:01.33\00:00:02.66 We're comparing Peter's experience with that of Judas. 00:00:02.70\00:00:05.43 And we've noticed that both seemed--initially, 00:00:05.47\00:00:09.04 superficially, you might think they both repented. 00:00:09.07\00:00:11.54 But Judas really repented over the fact 00:00:11.57\00:00:14.44 that it didn't workout. 00:00:14.48\00:00:15.81 The consequences were not as he intended. 00:00:15.84\00:00:18.18 Peter's heart was repentant but not Judas. 00:00:18.21\00:00:21.58 Judas never repented. 00:00:21.62\00:00:22.95 See when we read there in the Garden of Gethsemane, 00:00:22.98\00:00:25.75 when Judas with that mob approach Jesus, 00:00:25.79\00:00:31.33 Jesus addressed him as friend. 00:00:31.36\00:00:32.69 And he could see that loving face, forgiving face of Jesus. 00:00:32.73\00:00:38.53 Peter after three times of denial of Jesus, 00:00:38.57\00:00:46.07 he sees the same face, the same expression. 00:00:46.11\00:00:49.58 Jesus could not say anything to him but there is very, 00:00:49.61\00:00:52.51 very interesting is that the same face of Jesus 00:00:52.55\00:00:56.89 brings one person to repent. 00:00:56.92\00:00:58.45 He felt so guilty for what he did to Jesus. 00:00:58.49\00:01:03.46 His heart is broken. His heart was broken. 00:01:03.49\00:01:05.66 He wanted to cry because of that. 00:01:05.69\00:01:07.40 But another reaction that we have, 00:01:07.40\00:01:11.73 that one off Judas actually-- he made him to be sorry, 00:01:11.77\00:01:18.17 to repent because of the consequences, 00:01:18.21\00:01:20.14 you know, what he did to Jesus. Yes. 00:01:20.18\00:01:23.35 Now we must press on with the story. 00:01:23.38\00:01:25.28 Please. 00:01:25.31\00:01:26.65 And they take the money from Judas 00:01:26.68\00:01:28.15 and buy a potter's field and then it says in verse 11, 00:01:28.18\00:01:32.49 Now Jesus stood before the Governor, 00:01:32.52\00:01:34.52 and the Governor asked Him. 00:01:34.56\00:01:35.89 So now we've gone to another phase. 00:01:35.92\00:01:37.49 Actually, we really have to read verses one and two. 00:01:37.53\00:01:39.69 Okay, when morning came, all the chief priests 00:01:39.73\00:01:42.16 and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus 00:01:42.20\00:01:44.60 to put him to death. 00:01:44.63\00:01:45.97 And they bound him and led him away 00:01:46.00\00:01:47.57 and delivered him to Pilate, the governor. 00:01:47.60\00:01:49.54 Ranko, just one more time, just very briefly, 00:01:49.57\00:01:52.04 what are a few things that indicate 00:01:52.07\00:01:53.71 the illegality of this trial? 00:01:53.74\00:01:56.01 It was at night, that was one of the factors 00:01:56.04\00:01:58.38 and that was illegal, a night trial. 00:01:58.41\00:02:00.72 There're few things we have to keep in mind. 00:02:00.75\00:02:03.12 What were the duties of the Sanhedrin? 00:02:03.15\00:02:06.92 Sanhedrin was intended to act as a council for defense 00:02:06.96\00:02:11.56 of a guilty person, to defend 00:02:11.59\00:02:13.16 guilty person before the Romans. 00:02:13.19\00:02:15.03 What do we have here? 00:02:15.06\00:02:16.40 The accusers. 00:02:16.43\00:02:18.43 Second one, the sentence could not be executed 00:02:18.47\00:02:22.00 on the same day as a trial, 00:02:22.04\00:02:23.41 but they were so eager to bring 00:02:23.44\00:02:25.37 Jesus very early in the morning 00:02:25.41\00:02:27.41 and the execution is done the same day, 00:02:27.44\00:02:31.21 before the sunset, before the Passover starts. 00:02:31.25\00:02:33.92 The next one, the hearing could not be heard 00:02:33.95\00:02:36.69 during the night. 00:02:36.72\00:02:38.05 That's exactly where they did it. 00:02:38.09\00:02:39.42 And the final one, trial could not be held 00:02:39.45\00:02:41.59 on eve of the Sabbath or on eve of the festival day. 00:02:41.62\00:02:46.66 This, you see, they broke all the rules and regulations. 00:02:46.70\00:02:52.47 So now it moves from just a Jewish trial or hearing. 00:02:52.50\00:02:57.14 Now we get the Romans involved. 00:02:57.17\00:02:58.74 So one more time let's be reminded, 00:02:58.77\00:03:01.48 a Roman procurator-- he was put by Romans 00:03:01.51\00:03:06.25 in charge of Judea, instead of Herod the great's son, 00:03:06.28\00:03:12.02 Archelaus, who was expelled from Romans 00:03:12.05\00:03:15.36 after few years of his terrible, terrible rule there in-- 00:03:15.39\00:03:20.00 So now Pilate was in charge. 00:03:20.03\00:03:21.76 We have to keep in mind 00:03:21.80\00:03:23.26 that Pilate did not reside in Jerusalem. 00:03:23.30\00:03:27.50 His residence was in Caesarea, 00:03:27.54\00:03:31.91 so he resided there. 00:03:31.94\00:03:33.81 When we go to Caesarea, there are so many ruins there. 00:03:33.84\00:03:37.55 We can see how magnificent place, 00:03:37.58\00:03:40.45 you know, Herod the Great built in honors of Caesar. 00:03:40.48\00:03:45.12 But during-- at the time of festivals, 00:03:45.15\00:03:49.62 when many Jews from all over the Roman Empire 00:03:49.66\00:03:53.96 came there to Jerusalem, the procurator 00:03:54.00\00:03:57.60 would come there to Jerusalem 00:03:57.63\00:03:59.43 and reside in Herod's palace there. 00:03:59.47\00:04:01.97 Why? 00:04:02.00\00:04:03.34 Because it was during the festivals that the Jewish 00:04:03.37\00:04:05.81 people would retell all the stories 00:04:05.84\00:04:10.21 of their expectations of the Messiah. 00:04:10.25\00:04:12.21 And it was the best opportunity for them that the riot starts 00:04:12.25\00:04:16.18 in the rebellion against the Romans. 00:04:16.22\00:04:17.72 So the procurator would come there to Jerusalem 00:04:17.75\00:04:20.82 just to watch, to be sure that everything, 00:04:20.86\00:04:23.22 everything is okay. 00:04:23.26\00:04:24.63 That's why Pilate, at that time, was in Jerusalem. 00:04:24.66\00:04:27.60 And the Roman authorities are not gonna be impressed 00:04:27.66\00:04:31.10 by a religious argument among Jesus and the Pharisees. 00:04:31.13\00:04:35.27 What they're concerned about is these people 00:04:35.30\00:04:38.07 rising up in rebellion. 00:04:38.11\00:04:39.44 Because there were--there'd been many rebellions. 00:04:39.47\00:04:41.34 There had been many attempts. 00:04:41.38\00:04:43.01 Being assigned to rule over the Jews was not an easy task. 00:04:43.04\00:04:46.55 So we see the situation changing. 00:04:46.58\00:04:51.45 So can you read from verse 11 00:04:51.49\00:04:53.42 that you see how the trial took place. 00:04:53.46\00:04:55.09 Now Jesus stood before the Governor, 00:04:55.12\00:04:56.69 and the Governor asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" 00:04:56.73\00:04:59.56 and Jesus said, "You have said so." 00:04:59.59\00:05:02.20 But when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, 00:05:02.23\00:05:05.00 He made no answer. 00:05:05.03\00:05:06.57 Then Pilate said to Him, "Do you not hear many things 00:05:06.60\00:05:09.60 they testify against You?" 00:05:09.64\00:05:11.17 But He gave him no answer, not even a single charge, 00:05:11.21\00:05:14.28 so that the governor wondered greatly. 00:05:14.31\00:05:18.58 We have to understand that the trial took place 00:05:18.61\00:05:23.42 in certain building. 00:05:23.45\00:05:27.46 The tradition favors the tower of Antonia. 00:05:27.49\00:05:31.29 That actually was near the temple 00:05:31.33\00:05:34.36 and marked the beginning of Via Dolorosa, that place. 00:05:34.40\00:05:40.00 However, the evidence supports that praetorian 00:05:40.04\00:05:42.90 was in the palace of Herod, 00:05:42.94\00:05:45.54 where Roman procurators resided 00:05:45.57\00:05:48.41 during those days of the festival, 00:05:48.44\00:05:50.31 there in Jerusalem. 00:05:50.35\00:05:52.61 So, you know, they brought Jesus early in the morning, 00:05:52.65\00:05:55.35 you know, the Roman governors and procurators 00:05:55.38\00:05:59.69 they like--they were drinking and spending, you know, 00:05:59.72\00:06:03.49 good part of the night in drinking and having fun. 00:06:03.53\00:06:06.83 But in the morning they wanted to sleep. 00:06:06.86\00:06:10.20 So Pilate was not happy that they woke him up. 00:06:10.23\00:06:14.44 And what was the accusation? 00:06:14.47\00:06:18.01 We saw it. 00:06:18.04\00:06:19.37 He was the one who claimed to sit 00:06:19.41\00:06:21.14 at the right hand of God. 00:06:21.18\00:06:22.51 He's that messianic figure. He claimed to be king. 00:06:22.54\00:06:24.65 So Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" 00:06:24.68\00:06:29.58 If you are, then only one consequences. 00:06:29.62\00:06:32.95 So the sentence is already pronounced. 00:06:32.99\00:06:35.89 But Jesus does not answer. 00:06:35.92\00:06:38.13 And Pilate is surprised, "Why don't you respond?" 00:06:38.16\00:06:42.33 in verse 18. 00:06:42.36\00:06:43.90 "Do you see how many people are testifying against you?" 00:06:43.93\00:06:46.40 So, Glenn, what's going on? 00:06:46.43\00:06:48.14 It's interesting, Pilate is trying to get at the truth, 00:06:48.17\00:06:51.27 but Jesus is not speaking here. 00:06:51.31\00:06:55.88 And really, we are just focusing here 00:06:55.91\00:06:58.91 on the account in Matthew, 00:06:58.95\00:07:01.05 but we when we look-- when we read also John, 00:07:01.08\00:07:03.85 because John was evidently present there and also Luke, 00:07:03.89\00:07:08.22 we see many, many more details. 00:07:08.26\00:07:11.06 Actually, Pilate was making every effort 00:07:11.09\00:07:17.90 to appeal to the emotions, 00:07:17.93\00:07:21.10 to the feelings of the people, to their senses, 00:07:21.14\00:07:23.41 that they were doing wrong 00:07:23.44\00:07:25.27 but actually nothing, nothing helped. 00:07:25.31\00:07:27.68 Finally, what he did according to other gospels, 00:07:27.71\00:07:29.74 he scourged Jesus. 00:07:29.78\00:07:31.28 We'll talk about scourging little bit later. 00:07:31.31\00:07:33.21 But finally he decided to make a final move 00:07:33.25\00:07:39.75 and very important act. 00:07:39.79\00:07:42.39 And what was that, Glenn, please would you read 00:07:42.42\00:07:48.63 from verse 18 to verse 25--to 26. 00:07:48.66\00:07:56.60 And I might now add that Jesus 00:07:56.64\00:07:58.57 did have a conversation with Pilate. 00:07:58.61\00:08:00.34 We see through the other gospels, 00:08:00.38\00:08:02.08 in which He is really reaching out to him. 00:08:02.11\00:08:06.15 The one who is--he thinks he holds Jesus life in his hand, 00:08:06.18\00:08:10.42 Jesus says, no, you don't. 00:08:10.45\00:08:11.79 Actually, there're many things. 00:08:11.82\00:08:13.15 When we read the gospel of Luke, 00:08:13.19\00:08:14.59 there're two trials before Herod-- 00:08:14.62\00:08:16.76 before Pilate, Pilate did not want to be involved-- 00:08:16.79\00:08:20.83 He's looking for a way out. 00:08:20.86\00:08:22.16 He sent him to Herod Antipas who was at that time 00:08:22.20\00:08:24.53 in Jerusalem for the festival. 00:08:24.57\00:08:26.67 So Antipas send Jesus back to Pilate. 00:08:26.70\00:08:29.70 I mean, we see that Pilate had great struggles 00:08:29.74\00:08:34.34 within himself. 00:08:34.38\00:08:35.71 He did not want to do-- that cruel man 00:08:35.74\00:08:37.91 who crucified so many people, killed them, 00:08:37.95\00:08:39.98 many innocent people. 00:08:40.02\00:08:41.95 He now tried to save people. 00:08:41.98\00:08:43.69 And now he is moving to the final act 00:08:43.72\00:08:45.19 and it's from verse 20. 00:08:45.22\00:08:47.36 He finally figures the way out. Yeah. 00:08:47.39\00:08:49.69 And it says, "Now at the feast the governor 00:08:49.72\00:08:51.99 was accustomed to release to the crowd 00:08:52.03\00:08:56.00 one prisoner whom they wanted. 00:08:56.03\00:08:57.53 And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas." 00:08:57.57\00:09:01.47 Is that the only way that he's known, Ranko? 00:09:01.50\00:09:03.71 Barabbas, we have that name here. 00:09:03.74\00:09:06.98 I would state it after the text. 00:09:07.01\00:09:09.18 Sorry, sorry. 00:09:09.21\00:09:10.55 "And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 00:09:10.58\00:09:13.92 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to him, 00:09:13.95\00:09:16.89 'Whom do you want me to release for you, Barabbas 00:09:16.92\00:09:19.82 or Jesus who's called the Christ?' 00:09:19.85\00:09:22.22 " So he gives them the choice, 00:09:22.26\00:09:23.59 "Who do you want me to release?" 00:09:23.63\00:09:24.96 "For he knew that it was out of envy 00:09:24.99\00:09:26.63 that they had delivered him up. 00:09:26.66\00:09:27.96 Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, 00:09:28.00\00:09:29.86 his wife sent word to him, 'Have nothing to do with 00:09:29.90\00:09:32.67 that righteous man, for I have had suffered 00:09:32.70\00:09:34.90 much over him today in a dream.' 00:09:34.94\00:09:36.74 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded 00:09:36.77\00:09:38.84 the people to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 00:09:38.87\00:09:42.28 The governor asked again, "Which of the two 00:09:42.31\00:09:45.55 do you want me to release to you?" 00:09:45.58\00:09:47.42 And they said, 'Barabbas.' 00:09:47.45\00:09:48.78 Pilate said to them, 'Then what shall I do 00:09:48.82\00:09:50.79 with Jesus who is called the Christ? 00:09:50.82\00:09:52.35 And they said, 'Let him be crucified!' 00:09:52.39\00:09:54.69 And he said, 'Why, what evil has he done?' 00:09:54.72\00:09:58.49 They shouted all the more, 'Let him be crucified!' 00:09:58.53\00:10:01.10 'Let him be crucified!'" 00:10:01.13\00:10:02.73 Can you imagine what's going on? 00:10:04.67\00:10:07.20 All demonic forces are stirring up people to do it. 00:10:07.24\00:10:10.84 But Pilate wants to do something. 00:10:10.87\00:10:13.44 Can you imagine that cruel man, 00:10:13.48\00:10:15.24 try to appeal to their emotions and to their feelings? 00:10:15.28\00:10:18.51 So what does he do? 00:10:18.55\00:10:20.75 He brings another prisoner and his name is Barabbas. 00:10:20.78\00:10:25.55 What is the meaning of the name Barabbas? 00:10:25.59\00:10:27.52 It's Aramaic. 00:10:27.56\00:10:29.19 Bar, it means the son, and Abba father, 00:10:29.22\00:10:33.19 son of the father, he puts in there. 00:10:33.23\00:10:36.20 By the way, we have some ancient versions 00:10:36.23\00:10:40.90 of the New Testament translate into Syriac and Coptic language. 00:10:40.94\00:10:45.74 Actually they have something very interesting there. 00:10:45.77\00:10:48.01 They state that Barabbas name was actually Yeshua, 00:10:48.04\00:10:53.78 which is Jesus. 00:10:53.82\00:10:55.48 So his name was Jesus Barabbas. 00:10:55.52\00:10:58.79 So they're left with a clear choice 00:10:58.82\00:11:00.72 between these two individuals. 00:11:00.76\00:11:02.09 We really have to explain who Barabbas was. 00:11:02.12\00:11:04.29 We know that he was probably like that man 00:11:04.33\00:11:08.76 who beat, and you know, harmed that person 00:11:08.80\00:11:14.00 in the parable of the good Samaritan. 00:11:14.04\00:11:17.24 They were robbers. They are bandits there. 00:11:17.27\00:11:20.24 They put all people in terror everywhere 00:11:20.28\00:11:24.98 and he was sentenced to death 00:11:25.01\00:11:27.55 and Pilate said, let me put that man, 00:11:27.58\00:11:30.35 the people would not choose him because they knew 00:11:30.39\00:11:32.59 how much they suffered because of him. 00:11:32.62\00:11:35.02 I will by this way I will save Jesus Christ. 00:11:35.06\00:11:38.69 But amazingly and here comes the moment. 00:11:38.73\00:11:41.60 Can you imagine, Pilate stands there 00:11:41.63\00:11:45.20 and he says "Do you want me 00:11:45.23\00:11:47.27 to release to you Jesus the Messiah?" 00:11:47.30\00:11:51.27 You're waiting for him or Jesus Barabbas. 00:11:51.31\00:11:56.95 And what was the decision that people made? 00:11:56.98\00:11:59.05 And it's very clear that Pilate knew 00:11:59.08\00:12:01.55 that Jesus was innocent, and so did the crowd 00:12:01.58\00:12:03.92 and so did the priest. 00:12:03.95\00:12:05.69 And yet, as you said, the devil stirs them up. 00:12:05.72\00:12:08.42 Give us Jesus Barabbas. 00:12:08.46\00:12:10.06 What shall I do with Jesus the Messiah, crucify Him? 00:12:10.09\00:12:13.33 Why? 00:12:13.36\00:12:14.66 There is no answer, there is no reason, 00:12:14.73\00:12:16.13 crucify Him, crucify Him, 00:12:16.16\00:12:18.30 His blood upon us and our children. 00:12:18.33\00:12:22.24 What is going on? 00:12:22.27\00:12:23.77 I would like to say to the viewers, 00:12:23.81\00:12:30.11 2,000 years ago, the Jewish leaders, 00:12:30.15\00:12:32.75 they had to make decision. 00:12:32.78\00:12:35.15 Jesus Barabbas or Jesus called Christ. 00:12:35.18\00:12:39.55 Today we face the same decision. 00:12:39.59\00:12:44.09 Are we going to accept Jesus Christ 00:12:44.13\00:12:47.13 as our personal savior? 00:12:47.20\00:12:48.60 Choice is our. 00:12:48.63\00:12:50.30
