Welcome to the Books of the Books series here on 3ABN. 00:00:20.18\00:00:23.69 I'm Glenn Russell professor of religion 00:00:23.72\00:00:25.59 Andrews University here with friend and scholar, 00:00:25.62\00:00:29.16 colleague, Dr. Ranko Stefanovich. 00:00:29.19\00:00:31.73 Ranko you teach at the theological seminary. 00:00:31.76\00:00:34.36 I'm an under grad teacher 00:00:34.36\00:00:35.70 but we had some good years of teaching 00:00:35.73\00:00:37.57 together in the religion department. 00:00:37.60\00:00:39.93 Ranko, we're exploring this Book of Mathew. 00:00:39.97\00:00:42.70 We've come to these powerful chapters 00:00:42.74\00:00:46.04 and I just have to say for both of us 00:00:46.07\00:00:48.38 as we're exploring this you just kind of feel 00:00:48.41\00:00:51.48 human language isn't adequate. 00:00:51.51\00:00:53.11 It filled us with awe and also trembling 00:00:53.15\00:00:57.79 because we are dealing something I'm afraid 00:00:57.82\00:01:01.69 we are not able to understand completely. 00:01:01.72\00:01:04.06 These are sacred passages. All of scripture 00:01:04.09\00:01:06.59 is and these just bring us to the very heart of God 00:01:06.63\00:01:09.76 as we see Jesus. 00:01:09.80\00:01:11.13 In the book of Desire of Ages, 00:01:11.17\00:01:12.50 actually we read that this is a subject 00:01:12.53\00:01:15.24 we'll try to understand through all eternity. 00:01:15.27\00:01:17.67 -Yes. -So who are we now that-- 00:01:17.71\00:01:19.84 Well, let's try to understand little bit more of it today 00:01:19.87\00:01:22.98 and let's enter into prayer 00:01:23.01\00:01:24.78 that God can help us in that process. 00:01:24.81\00:01:27.58 Lord, we--we recognize our short comings, 00:01:27.62\00:01:31.52 our inability to grasp the infinite love 00:01:31.55\00:01:35.42 of Your Son Jesus Christ. 00:01:35.46\00:01:37.49 But we pray that the person the Holy Spirit will be with us. 00:01:37.53\00:01:40.83 May we be drawn to you through the study of Your word. 00:01:40.86\00:01:44.73 We know that you've given us scriptures, 00:01:44.77\00:01:46.57 so that we cannot just argue about it or debate, 00:01:46.60\00:01:49.87 but actually be drawn to you to commit our lives 00:01:49.90\00:01:52.77 to you as our Savior, to be faithful to you. 00:01:52.81\00:01:55.84 May that be our experience in Jesus name we pray, amen. 00:01:55.88\00:02:00.62 Now we have seen the journey of Jesus to the cross, 00:02:00.65\00:02:05.85 He's come through the Lord's supper experience. 00:02:05.89\00:02:09.26 We've seen Him in the garden and that that momentous struggle 00:02:09.29\00:02:14.66 with the fate of humanity hanging in the balance 00:02:14.73\00:02:18.03 and Jesus surrenders His life, His will to the cross. 00:02:18.07\00:02:23.34 Coming out of that experience 00:02:23.37\00:02:26.54 we find the attack of the mob with Judas. 00:02:26.57\00:02:30.71 I'm marvel--you know, it's just a small point here, 00:02:30.75\00:02:33.55 but when Judas comes and kisses him 00:02:33.58\00:02:35.68 and Jesus says to him, "friend." 00:02:35.72\00:02:38.12 I mean, what forgiving, you know, Judas has gone too far. 00:02:38.15\00:02:41.96 The devil has come in to him as the scripture said, 00:02:41.99\00:02:43.96 but Jesus still doesn't brush him aside. 00:02:43.99\00:02:46.33 Now we come down to the arrest and trials of Jesus. 00:02:46.36\00:02:50.53 May I pick up Mathew Chapter 26 00:02:50.57\00:02:53.27 starting with verse 57. -Please. 00:02:53.30\00:02:56.07 "Then those who had seized Jesus 00:02:56.10\00:02:57.51 led him to Caiaphas the high priest, 00:02:57.54\00:03:00.71 where the scribes and the elders had gathered." 00:03:00.74\00:03:02.81 And may be should pause right here, Ranko. 00:03:02.84\00:03:06.21 People might get confused, 'cause it 00:03:06.25\00:03:07.58 mentions a couple of priests, Who were they? Caiaphas, 00:03:07.62\00:03:10.29 Annas, and so forth. 00:03:10.32\00:03:13.12 Among the Jewish people, there was always a high priest. 00:03:13.15\00:03:17.76 But in the first century as Palestine the Jews 00:03:17.79\00:03:22.63 were under the Roman occupation, 00:03:22.66\00:03:25.77 the priest was not only a religious figure. 00:03:25.80\00:03:29.60 Do you remember we talk about the Sadducees? 00:03:29.64\00:03:31.77 Sadducees also claim political power, 00:03:31.81\00:03:35.41 so the high priest was also the president 00:03:35.44\00:03:40.72 of the Jewish parliament of that time 00:03:40.75\00:03:43.85 known as the Sanhedrin. 00:03:43.89\00:03:45.82 You noticed in the text it says that they took him 00:03:45.85\00:03:49.59 to the house of Caiaphas were the scribes 00:03:49.62\00:03:52.76 and the elders were gathered together. 00:03:52.79\00:03:55.36 Sanhedrin comes from Greek, it means 70. 00:03:55.40\00:03:59.50 So Caiaphas is the high priest. His father in law is Annas. 00:03:59.53\00:04:04.67 Is Annas--actually he retired. -Yes. 00:04:04.71\00:04:07.58 So he was not official the high priest, 00:04:07.61\00:04:09.94 but you know, when you have a person 00:04:09.98\00:04:11.51 who is the high priest and political Jewish leader 00:04:11.55\00:04:15.32 I mean, for a long time he had a great impact 00:04:15.35\00:04:19.99 and influence on people. 00:04:20.02\00:04:22.29 You see, we are not talking about modern times 00:04:22.32\00:04:24.39 where person is the president, 00:04:24.43\00:04:25.76 after that, he does not have the any authoritative power. 00:04:25.79\00:04:29.80 Those ancient times you had authoritative power 00:04:29.83\00:04:33.80 as long as you live. 00:04:33.84\00:04:36.14 -The influence is still there. -Yes. 00:04:36.17\00:04:37.81 Let's pick it up now with verse 58. 00:04:37.84\00:04:39.57 "But Peter followed him at a distance 00:04:39.61\00:04:41.34 as far as the courtyard of the high priest, 00:04:41.38\00:04:43.81 and going inside he set with the guards to see the end. 00:04:43.85\00:04:47.35 Now the chief priests, and the whole council 00:04:47.38\00:04:48.95 sought false testimony against Jesus, 00:04:48.98\00:04:51.22 that they might put him to death." 00:04:51.25\00:04:52.75 What are we seeing so far? 00:04:52.79\00:04:54.42 The trial is getting set up, 00:04:54.46\00:04:56.29 but they're not seeking truth, aren't they? 00:04:56.32\00:04:57.96 No, Sanhedrin would take place in the temple-- 00:04:57.99\00:05:04.33 And again remind us the Sanhedrin 00:05:04.37\00:05:06.60 is kind of the combination of the church headquarters and-- 00:05:06.63\00:05:12.41 -And political power. -The Supreme Court. 00:05:12.44\00:05:18.28 But very often we have Jewish sources indicate 00:05:18.31\00:05:22.52 that very often Sanhedrin could have a meeting 00:05:22.55\00:05:26.86 in the house of the high priest. 00:05:26.89\00:05:29.82 If we go to Israel today, 00:05:29.86\00:05:32.86 there is a traditional house of high priest 00:05:32.89\00:05:36.67 and we have a many, many evidences 00:05:36.70\00:05:39.30 that really this could be that real house of the high priest 00:05:39.33\00:05:43.41 and this is true then you go, 00:05:43.44\00:05:44.77 Glenn, I don't know if you visit at their place, 00:05:44.81\00:05:46.54 you go there to the basement. 00:05:46.57\00:05:48.24 By the way there is still original stairways 00:05:48.28\00:05:50.75 leading to Caiaphas house that are from the first century. 00:05:50.78\00:05:54.08 Glenn, when you are there, then you understand 00:05:54.12\00:05:55.88 if this is really Caiaphas house this were the stairways 00:05:55.92\00:05:58.89 by which Jesus climbed as He was taken to Caiaphas house 00:05:58.92\00:06:03.12 and that basement was the place were Jesus was held. 00:06:03.16\00:06:07.23 You know, they took Him probably about midnight 00:06:07.30\00:06:10.67 or maybe 2 in the morning 00:06:10.70\00:06:13.54 Sanhedrin met early in the morning, 00:06:13.57\00:06:16.47 so Jesus for few hours was locked there 00:06:16.50\00:06:19.87 in the basement of Caiaphas house, 00:06:19.91\00:06:22.21 but just to mention one more detail is 00:06:22.24\00:06:25.01 Sanhedrin had the meeting. 00:06:25.05\00:06:26.65 Why did they have that meeting during the night? 00:06:26.68\00:06:29.28 Because they did an illegal act. 00:06:29.32\00:06:32.12 Sanhedrin, we said, it was the Supreme Court, 00:06:32.15\00:06:37.06 but really they did not have any judicial power and authority. 00:06:37.09\00:06:43.00 They couldn't examine the person, 00:06:43.03\00:06:46.27 present the accusations, 00:06:46.30\00:06:48.17 but it's the Roman authority, the procurator 00:06:48.20\00:06:50.87 at that time was Pilate, 00:06:50.91\00:06:52.44 he could really accept or reject those accusations 00:06:52.47\00:06:56.78 and only the Roman authority, 00:06:56.81\00:06:59.38 the procurator could sentence somebody to death, 00:06:59.41\00:07:02.72 so they were aware of that. 00:07:02.75\00:07:04.35 But they wanted to do something more, 00:07:04.39\00:07:05.99 that's why they decided to make 00:07:06.02\00:07:07.46 an illegal trial during the night. 00:07:07.49\00:07:11.06 And we'll see that they're dependent on the Romans 00:07:11.09\00:07:13.43 as you said for the death penalty 00:07:13.46\00:07:15.40 and they've got to find some charges 00:07:15.43\00:07:16.87 that the Romans will accept. -But what charges? 00:07:16.90\00:07:19.63 They've got religious issues here, 00:07:19.67\00:07:21.04 but it'll change and they'll become 00:07:21.07\00:07:22.60 more political in their refinement. 00:07:22.64\00:07:24.97 Now we understand why they tempted Jesus with the taxes. 00:07:25.01\00:07:28.11 Can you imagine if Jesus failed with that--boy, it's enough 00:07:28.14\00:07:31.91 just to go to Pilate and say, you see this is the person 00:07:31.95\00:07:34.68 we selected the people or refused to pay taxes, 00:07:34.72\00:07:37.89 that was enough to be crucified. 00:07:37.92\00:07:40.19 But they did not have anything. 00:07:40.22\00:07:42.99 Now these steps that you mentioned, Peter followed them 00:07:43.02\00:07:46.63 also a bit behind Jesus. What happens in his story? 00:07:46.66\00:07:52.00 So you have two part of the play. 00:07:53.94\00:07:58.54 They're in the courtyard. 00:07:58.57\00:08:01.41 They're bringing all those false witnesses 00:08:01.44\00:08:03.58 as we are reading in the text, all accusations. 00:08:03.61\00:08:06.05 They could not really find any charges against Jesus. 00:08:06.08\00:08:09.55 They could say, you know, He was teaching, 00:08:09.58\00:08:12.35 He is selecting people against our traditions et cetera. 00:08:12.39\00:08:16.26 But the Romans authorities would not by, 00:08:16.29\00:08:18.23 they say this is your private matter. 00:08:18.26\00:08:20.86 Let's read what the text says 00:08:20.90\00:08:22.33 here in verse 59 just on that point. 00:08:22.36\00:08:24.63 "Now the chief priest and the whole council 00:08:24.67\00:08:26.20 sought false witnesses against Jesus, 00:08:26.23\00:08:28.74 that they might put him to death, 00:08:28.77\00:08:30.21 but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward." 00:08:30.24\00:08:33.41 So people were coming making up things, 00:08:33.44\00:08:35.18 but they had to find someone who had just the right point. 00:08:35.21\00:08:37.21 They could not. 00:08:37.25\00:08:38.75 Actually Jesus provided the point to them 00:08:38.78\00:08:42.88 after everything, you know, then the high priest says, 00:08:42.92\00:08:45.35 boy, you are not responding. 00:08:45.39\00:08:47.69 Why would Jesus respond? There was nothing true. 00:08:47.72\00:08:50.06 And then Jesus made that statement in verse 64, 00:08:50.09\00:08:52.89 Glenn, can you read it? -All right. 00:08:52.93\00:08:54.66 "And Jesus said to him, 'You have said so,'" 00:08:54.73\00:08:57.20 because the question came, "'Are you the Messiah?' 00:08:57.23\00:08:59.73 'You have said so, but I tell you, 00:08:59.77\00:09:01.54 hereafter, you will see the son of man 00:09:01.57\00:09:03.34 seated at the right hand of power 00:09:03.37\00:09:05.41 and coming in the clouds of heaven.'" 00:09:05.44\00:09:06.81 -What did high priest do? -Oh, boy. 00:09:06.84\00:09:09.11 "Then the high priest tore his robes and said, 00:09:09.14\00:09:12.11 'He has uttered blasphemy. 00:09:12.15\00:09:13.72 Why do we still need witnesses? You have heard his blasphemy.'" 00:09:13.75\00:09:16.42 So two things they now found. 00:09:16.45\00:09:17.95 You see, we as a nation chosen by God, 00:09:17.99\00:09:23.69 we have now clear evidence that He's doing blasphemy, 00:09:23.73\00:09:27.76 because he is claiming that he would come 00:09:27.83\00:09:31.97 at the right hand of the power. 00:09:32.00\00:09:33.34 What did they refer to, to Daniel Chapter 7, 00:09:33.37\00:09:35.77 we know that in Jewish writings, Daniel Chapter 7, 00:09:35.80\00:09:38.71 when you have one like a son of man 00:09:38.74\00:09:41.08 coming before God there and to him 00:09:41.11\00:09:44.05 was given all the power and the authority. 00:09:44.08\00:09:47.78 So they said, you see, Jesus claimed to be 00:09:47.82\00:09:50.65 that son of man of Daniel Chapter 3 00:09:50.69\00:09:54.29 which was actually the messianic figure with that. 00:09:54.32\00:09:57.33 But second thing is when you claim to sit 00:09:57.36\00:10:00.53 at the right hand of the power, 00:10:00.56\00:10:03.23 it means you claim to be that Messiah 00:10:03.26\00:10:05.53 who would sit on the throne of David 00:10:05.57\00:10:08.27 and they had the arguments to accuse Jesus that actually 00:10:08.30\00:10:11.44 He was that usurper who wanted to claim that power for himself 00:10:11.47\00:10:15.94 to establish that kingdom, 00:10:15.98\00:10:17.91 in other words to rebel against Romans. 00:10:17.95\00:10:20.05 So we have here two clear points what they try to do with Jesus. 00:10:20.08\00:10:25.15 And of course, they turn against Him and the high priest 00:10:25.19\00:10:29.06 in a mocking sense of purity tears his robes. 00:10:29.09\00:10:33.23 And they spit and they slap him 00:10:33.26\00:10:35.43 and say, "Prophesy against you" and so forth. 00:10:35.46\00:10:37.47 But that was not hard for Jesus. 00:10:37.50\00:10:39.60 He counted on that. 00:10:39.63\00:10:41.04 He made decision in Garden Gethsemane. 00:10:41.07\00:10:42.94 But actually, there was a significant hate that came, 00:10:42.97\00:10:49.98 not from those people. 00:10:50.01\00:10:52.71 It's from Jesus beloved disciple by name of Peter. 00:10:52.75\00:10:55.95 Glenn, can you just reflect that? 00:10:55.98\00:10:57.32 "Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard 00:10:57.35\00:10:59.15 and maid came to him and said, 00:10:59.19\00:11:00.59 'You also were with Jesus, the Galileans.'" 00:11:00.62\00:11:02.59 Now Galileans were known for their language. 00:11:02.62\00:11:05.89 The Galileans were not the most sophisticated 00:11:05.93\00:11:08.60 and she's picked up some accent and she senses 00:11:08.63\00:11:11.63 who he is and she perhaps recognizes him. 00:11:11.67\00:11:14.50 Like people recognize me, as soon as I'm talking to people 00:11:14.54\00:11:17.31 they recognize me where I am from, yeah. 00:11:17.34\00:11:19.44 This man was with Jesus of Nazareth. 00:11:19.47\00:11:21.38 And he denies that and now there's with an oath, 00:11:21.41\00:11:23.78 and he says no and after a little while more, came up 00:11:23.81\00:11:26.98 and said the same and then it says in verse 74, 00:11:27.02\00:11:31.72 "Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, 00:11:31.75\00:11:34.76 'I do not know the man.' And immediately the cock crowed. 00:11:34.79\00:11:38.09 and Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, 00:11:38.13\00:11:40.16 before the cock crews, you will deny me three times 00:11:40.20\00:11:42.56 and he went out, and wept bitterly." 00:11:42.60\00:11:44.83 Glenn, I would like to read another text, 00:11:44.87\00:11:47.37 very close to that. 00:11:47.40\00:11:49.47 If you can read verse 00:11:49.50\00:11:53.54 three to six of the next chapter 27. 00:11:53.58\00:12:00.82 "When Judas, his betrayer, saw that He was condemned, 00:12:01.82\00:12:04.49 he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver 00:12:04.52\00:12:08.02 to the chief priest and the elders. 00:12:08.06\00:12:09.99 Saying, 'I have sinned and betraying innocent blood.' 00:12:10.03\00:12:12.96 And they said, 'What is that to us? 00:12:12.99\00:12:14.56 See to it yourself.' 00:12:14.60\00:12:16.06 And throwing down the pieces of sliver 00:12:16.10\00:12:17.63 in the temple he departed, 00:12:17.67\00:12:19.00 and he went and hanged himself. 00:12:19.03\00:12:20.80 But the chief priest taking the pieces of sliver said, 00:12:20.84\00:12:23.84 'It is not lawful to put them into the treasure, 00:12:23.87\00:12:25.84 for they are blood money.'" 00:12:25.87\00:12:27.21 And then they go out and buy the potter's field. 00:12:27.24\00:12:29.31 So who of these two had committed more terrible sin? 00:12:29.34\00:12:35.45 There is a lot of similarities between Peter and Judas 00:12:35.48\00:12:37.65 both were disciples, both had every opportunity 00:12:37.69\00:12:40.39 to hear Jesus preach, 00:12:40.42\00:12:41.76 both had been sent out as missionaries. 00:12:41.79\00:12:44.09 Both had seen the miracles of Jesus, 00:12:44.13\00:12:46.19 but their experience is different. 00:12:46.23\00:12:47.73 But can you imagine Peter three times swearing, 00:12:47.76\00:12:52.33 using oath, I do not know Him. 00:12:52.37\00:12:55.54 When we are talking about the greatness of sin, 00:12:55.57\00:13:00.58 I don't see the difference, but that there is a difference. 00:13:00.61\00:13:05.58 What Peter did was because of the fear, 00:13:05.61\00:13:09.55 of the weakness of his flesh. 00:13:09.58\00:13:11.15 You know, Peter was always fast to talk 00:13:11.19\00:13:13.76 and after that he will start thinking about 00:13:13.79\00:13:15.82 what he was talking, so it was his-- 00:13:15.86\00:13:19.89 with Peter there was not impulse weakness at a moment. 00:13:19.93\00:13:24.60 Actually, it was something that, that not Peter sorry Judas, 00:13:24.63\00:13:29.54 the Judas was something building, 00:13:29.57\00:13:31.31 building his character from the very beginning 00:13:31.34\00:13:33.71 when he joined to Jesus. 00:13:33.74\00:13:35.44 So there's a calculated resistance 00:13:35.48\00:13:37.41 rather than a weakness of the flesh. 00:13:37.45\00:13:39.35 And you see that, but still there was 00:13:39.38\00:13:41.65 an opportunity for Judas to repent. 00:13:41.68\00:13:43.82 Do you remember Jesus called him "friend"? 00:13:43.85\00:13:46.55 -Friend. -What is the difference? 00:13:46.59\00:13:48.76 The difference is that Peter repented genuinely 00:13:48.79\00:13:55.33 and we know that he was forgiven. 00:13:55.36\00:13:58.57 Judas, he repented but that was never, 00:13:58.60\00:14:01.44 never genuine, genuine repentance. 00:14:01.47\00:14:04.67 And we see that Jesus looked at Peter 00:14:04.71\00:14:06.78 and loved him and he must have felt such disappointment 00:14:06.81\00:14:11.41 and yet He looks in love at Peter. 00:14:11.45\00:14:13.01 And this is what drove Peter out into the darkness 00:14:13.05\00:14:15.78 to weep and to cry, but let's remember 00:14:15.82\00:14:17.62 that Peter has that repentance experience 00:14:17.65\00:14:20.59 and Jesus had prophesied. He said "when you fall, 00:14:20.62\00:14:24.39 when you come back, I'll restore you to brethren." 00:14:24.43\00:14:27.23 Jesus had already said that He'll be with Peter. 00:14:27.23\00:14:30.07 So remember you may have stumbled 00:14:30.10\00:14:31.53 and fallen a little bit like Peter, 00:14:31.57\00:14:33.40 but your Savior will still be with you. 00:14:33.44\00:14:34.94 We're gonna explore this a little bit more 00:14:34.97\00:14:36.37 right after our break, we'll be right back. 00:14:36.40\00:14:38.57
