Welcome back, we're here in Hebrews chapter 5, verse 7, 00:00:01.33\00:00:05.73 "In the days of His flesh, Jesus offered up prayers 00:00:05.77\00:00:08.44 and supplications with loud cries and tears 00:00:08.47\00:00:12.27 to him who was able to save Him from death, 00:00:12.31\00:00:14.94 and He was heard for His godly fear." 00:00:14.98\00:00:17.01 Glenn, we have here a few details 00:00:19.41\00:00:22.58 that we have to keep in mind in order to understand 00:00:22.62\00:00:25.42 what was going on in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:00:25.45\00:00:27.72 So we already noticed that gospel says 00:00:27.76\00:00:31.99 that Jesus went about stones throw-- 00:00:32.03\00:00:34.96 at least one hundred yards, it's during the night 00:00:35.00\00:00:39.80 but the disciples were able clearly to hear Jesus 00:00:39.83\00:00:44.97 praying and the words of that prayer. 00:00:45.01\00:00:49.94 Hebrews says, thatJesus was praying with the loud crying. 00:00:49.98\00:00:56.02 We don't here an ordinary prayer of Jesus, you know, 00:00:56.05\00:00:58.75 "Father be with me," falling down on the ground. 00:00:58.79\00:01:02.22 It was a cry of agony it was aloud cry. 00:01:02.26\00:01:05.83 So, Glenn, what was going on here in the scene? 00:01:05.86\00:01:08.86 Because this is the crucial issue of His whole life, 00:01:08.90\00:01:11.53 His whole ministry and all of human history. 00:01:11.57\00:01:15.30 This is where Jesus has to face the fact 00:01:15.34\00:01:19.94 that he cannot be the messiah without the cross. 00:01:19.97\00:01:23.91 But can you realize something? 00:01:23.95\00:01:25.28 You know, as we were going through the life of Jesus 00:01:25.31\00:01:27.52 in the gospel of Mathew, we see a constant effort of Satan 00:01:27.55\00:01:32.22 to prevent Jesus to go there to the cross. 00:01:32.25\00:01:36.46 But now in the Garden of Gethsemane, 00:01:36.49\00:01:39.69 evidently Satan with all his army is there. 00:01:39.73\00:01:44.60 We are here dealing with a most decisive battle, 00:01:44.63\00:01:49.54 or actually point of the battle, that great controversy. 00:01:49.57\00:01:54.11 The most decisive moment has come and no wonder, 00:01:54.14\00:01:58.61 can you imagine that pressure on Jesus 00:01:58.65\00:02:01.38 knowing the Satan is there. 00:02:01.42\00:02:03.42 The demonic forces are there 00:02:03.45\00:02:05.05 and there is Satan almost invisible form there, 00:02:05.09\00:02:08.62 picking up on Jesus. 00:02:08.66\00:02:09.99 By the way I will really like this moment to read 00:02:10.03\00:02:14.36 a statement that made great impact on me from the book, 00:02:14.36\00:02:17.80 "Desire of Ages" page 690. 00:02:17.83\00:02:21.50 It says, "Jesus was praying in agony. 00:02:21.54\00:02:25.44 The faith of humanity trembled in the balance. 00:02:25.47\00:02:29.44 Christ might even now 00:02:29.48\00:02:31.58 refuse to drink the cup apportioned to guilty man. 00:02:31.61\00:02:36.28 It was not yet too late. 00:02:36.32\00:02:38.52 He might wipe the bloody sweat from His brow, 00:02:38.55\00:02:41.82 and leave man to perish in his iniquity. 00:02:41.86\00:02:44.59 He might say, let the transgressor 00:02:44.63\00:02:46.63 receive the penalty of his sin, and I will go back to My Father. 00:02:46.66\00:02:51.83 Will the Son of God drink 00:02:51.87\00:02:53.60 the bitter cup of humiliation and agony? 00:02:53.64\00:02:56.47 Will the innocent suffer the consequences 00:02:56.50\00:02:59.01 of the curse of sin, to save the guilty? 00:02:59.04\00:03:02.61 The words fall tremblingly from the pale lips of Jesus, 00:03:02.64\00:03:07.12 'O My Father, if this cup may not pass away from Me, 00:03:07.15\00:03:14.29 except I drink it, Thy will be done.'" 00:03:14.32\00:03:20.43 I am sorry, Glenn, I cannot contemplate of everything 00:03:20.46\00:03:25.80 what was going on there in Garden of Gethsemane. 00:03:25.83\00:03:27.67 I have tears in my eyes. 00:03:27.70\00:03:29.67 That I cannot be grateful to my savior 00:03:29.70\00:03:32.34 what he put the stake there in order to save you and me. 00:03:32.37\00:03:36.95 We are talking about cross, 00:03:36.98\00:03:39.98 and rightly doing that, but Jesus agony on the cross 00:03:40.02\00:03:44.39 actually begin here in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:03:44.42\00:03:47.06 You cannot separate the two. 00:03:47.09\00:03:49.09 And this is the extension of that Philippian, chapter 2. 00:03:49.12\00:03:53.80 Philippians, chapter 2. That condescension. 00:03:53.83\00:03:56.00 He stepped down, he stepped down even to the death. 00:03:56.03\00:03:58.43 To the point of death. 00:03:58.47\00:03:59.80 And we see the beginning of the separation. 00:03:59.83\00:04:02.14 It will come to its fullness on the cross. 00:04:02.17\00:04:04.51 But he is being pulled away from his father 00:04:04.54\00:04:07.14 as he bears our sins. 00:04:07.18\00:04:08.78 You know then people talk about Garden of Gethsemane 00:04:08.81\00:04:11.25 they said, you know, "Jesus was God of course, 00:04:11.28\00:04:13.55 He knew that the grave could not hold him." 00:04:13.58\00:04:16.89 But keep in mind here we have a clear 00:04:16.92\00:04:20.66 that human aspect of Jesus, you know, 00:04:20.69\00:04:24.76 I wanted at this point to say something to the viewers 00:04:24.79\00:04:28.83 and among the Christians there is a belief 00:04:28.86\00:04:32.50 that death is actually nothing terrible to be afraid of. 00:04:32.53\00:04:36.47 The death is simply transition from this life 00:04:36.50\00:04:39.54 into that next life to go when human soul leaves the body 00:04:39.57\00:04:44.11 and you know human beings they continue to live. 00:04:44.15\00:04:48.25 Actually Swiss scholar Oscar Cullman, 00:04:48.28\00:04:53.82 he wrote a book on immortality of the soul 00:04:53.86\00:04:56.49 and he uses the situation of Jesus. 00:04:56.52\00:04:59.13 And he says, if death is really nothing terrible, 00:04:59.16\00:05:02.83 it's just transition from this life into the next one, 00:05:02.86\00:05:06.53 then why was Jesus so much afraid of death? 00:05:06.57\00:05:10.77 Much afraid to die? He is telling that the death, 00:05:10.81\00:05:15.38 actually death, is an enemy of the human race. 00:05:15.41\00:05:20.45 The biblical teaching of death is it is the enemy. 00:05:20.48\00:05:24.19 And we cannot take death lightly. 00:05:24.22\00:05:26.19 By the way there is only one instance that Jesus, 00:05:26.22\00:05:30.53 actually two instances, that Jesus cried. 00:05:30.56\00:05:33.93 One when Lazarus died, and second one 00:05:33.96\00:05:37.40 at the destiny of Jerusalem 00:05:37.43\00:05:40.77 what was supposed to happen to them it's again over death. 00:05:40.80\00:05:44.67 The only, the only instances. 00:05:44.71\00:05:47.04 So death is an enemy of the human race 00:05:47.08\00:05:51.05 but there is another point is, 00:05:51.08\00:05:53.08 but the death is a conquered enemy. 00:05:53.11\00:05:58.49 Because God himself, by becoming human being, 00:05:58.52\00:06:03.32 went through the experience of death. 00:06:03.36\00:06:06.33 And by his own death he defeated that enemy 00:06:06.36\00:06:10.43 so that you and me, we all, have that hope 00:06:10.47\00:06:14.60 that death is not the last word of the human race. 00:06:14.64\00:06:19.97 One day the last enemy will be defeated totally and completely 00:06:20.01\00:06:24.35 at the second coming of Jesus Christ. 00:06:24.38\00:06:27.98 That's what we see on this side. 00:06:28.02\00:06:29.82 But at that time He could not see 00:06:29.85\00:06:31.95 beyond the cross except by faith. 00:06:31.99\00:06:34.32 And the devil as you have said was pressing upon him 00:06:34.36\00:06:36.52 and saying look it's not worth it. Yeah. 00:06:36.56\00:06:39.19 It's not worth--why you gonna go through all this? 00:06:39.23\00:06:41.86 And you can imagine the devil saying something like, 00:06:41.90\00:06:43.73 "look, I sinned in heaven and I was cast out 00:06:43.77\00:06:46.74 and now you're gonna carry the sins of the world?" 00:06:46.77\00:06:49.27 Not only had that Satan pointed to him, 00:06:49.30\00:06:52.21 "you are dieing, for whom? 00:06:52.24\00:06:54.14 For those people just in few hours they will shout, 00:06:54.18\00:06:57.98 'crucify him, crucify him.' 00:06:58.01\00:06:59.61 You want to die for bunch of your disciples there? 00:06:59.65\00:07:02.95 They're sleeping they then do not care about you." 00:07:02.98\00:07:05.72 Jesus had all the reason to say to pack things seems 00:07:05.75\00:07:09.76 and go for journey to return where he came from. 00:07:09.79\00:07:14.56 But praise God, I'm moved with emotion, 00:07:14.60\00:07:20.37 he decided to go to cross because I was on his mind. 00:07:20.40\00:07:26.31 And dear viewers, you were on his mind. 00:07:26.34\00:07:29.41 He saw you and me that one day 00:07:29.44\00:07:34.02 we will accept that merits of his sacrifice. 00:07:34.05\00:07:37.42 We'll accept him as our personal savior. 00:07:37.45\00:07:42.12 And he made the decision, "I am going to the cross 00:07:42.16\00:07:46.06 to save those-- for human beings." 00:07:46.09\00:07:48.16 I know that he died for me. Glenn, He died for you. 00:07:48.20\00:07:51.87 He died for each one of us. It's love that compelled him. 00:07:51.90\00:07:54.77 It's the love. That's the only explanation. 00:07:54.80\00:07:58.01 And it was love that faced such loneliness. 00:07:58.04\00:08:00.21 He goes through this alone. Yes. 00:08:00.24\00:08:04.48 So Jesus made decision He came there 00:08:04.51\00:08:06.48 to his disciples over they're sleeping. 00:08:06.51\00:08:09.08 They don't understand what is going on 00:08:09.12\00:08:11.55 and dear viewers, while you are now watching this program 00:08:11.59\00:08:15.69 you'll just--watching this program and you look one 00:08:15.72\00:08:18.73 strange accent here and our human efforts to illustrate, 00:08:18.76\00:08:23.26 to explain what is written in the gospel of Mathew. 00:08:23.30\00:08:26.50 But as you're watching this program 00:08:26.53\00:08:28.80 you don't understand that 00:08:28.84\00:08:30.51 what is going on behind the scene. 00:08:30.54\00:08:32.54 There is a struggle for you soul. That's right. 00:08:32.57\00:08:34.91 There is Satan who like to destruct you. 00:08:34.94\00:08:37.38 What was going on there in Garden of Gethsemane. 00:08:37.41\00:08:40.75 It was just a part of that great controversy 00:08:40.78\00:08:44.65 that we still participant in that warfare. 00:08:44.69\00:08:48.09 And the surrender of Jesus' will is a critical point. 00:08:48.12\00:08:53.46 He had a choice to make 00:08:53.50\00:08:56.10 and he surrendered his will to the Father's will. 00:08:56.13\00:08:59.07 And so we each have a choice. Yes, to make. 00:08:59.10\00:09:02.50 We also, just like our savior, need to decide, 00:09:02.54\00:09:05.44 "will we surrender to God's will? 00:09:05.47\00:09:06.94 Will we give God our lives?" 00:09:06.98\00:09:08.61 And that's the point of Gethsemane. 00:09:08.64\00:09:10.81 I am so thankful for the Jesus lead the way. 00:09:10.85\00:09:13.15 I am so thankful of that my savior said, 00:09:13.18\00:09:15.02 "yes I will go." Not an easy thing. 00:09:15.05\00:09:18.59 History hung in the balance as you said. 00:09:18.62\00:09:22.02 This is a cosmic destiny. 00:09:22.06\00:09:25.56 But he makes a decision to be faithful to God, 00:09:25.59\00:09:28.40 to be faithful to his mission and his purpose. 00:09:28.43\00:09:30.57 He said," I came to seek and to save the lost." 00:09:30.60\00:09:34.47 So as Jesus was talking to his disciples. 00:09:34.50\00:09:37.81 As they were trying to wake up He says "just look." 00:09:37.84\00:09:42.68 And suddenly, you know, it was very dark. 00:09:42.71\00:09:46.61 But suddenly lights appeared, who was coming? 00:09:46.65\00:09:49.85 May I read verse 47 as following? Please, Glenn. 00:09:49.88\00:09:52.45 "While He was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, 00:09:52.49\00:09:56.12 and with him great crowd with swords and clubs 00:09:56.16\00:09:58.93 from the chief priest and the elders of the people. 00:09:58.96\00:10:01.53 Now the betrayer had given them signs saying, 00:10:01.56\00:10:03.80 'the one I shall kiss is the man, cease him.' 00:10:03.83\00:10:07.60 And he came up to Jesus at once he said, 00:10:07.64\00:10:09.97 'hail master,' and he kissed him. 00:10:10.01\00:10:13.64 And Jesus said to him, 'friend, 00:10:13.68\00:10:17.85 why are you here? 00:10:17.88\00:10:19.88 'Then I came up and laid hands on Jesus he ceased them 00:10:19.91\00:10:22.42 and behold one of those who were with Jesus 00:10:22.45\00:10:25.49 stretched out his hand and drew his sword 00:10:25.52\00:10:27.69 and struck the slave of the high priest 00:10:27.72\00:10:29.96 and cut off his ear. 00:10:29.99\00:10:31.69 Jesus said to him, 'put your sword back in its place. 00:10:31.73\00:10:34.56 For all who have taken the sword will perish by the sword 00:10:34.60\00:10:37.20 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my father? 00:10:37.23\00:10:39.83 And he will at once send, 00:10:39.87\00:10:41.34 send me more than twelve legions of angels. 00:10:41.37\00:10:44.87 But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled? 00:10:44.91\00:10:46.94 That it must be so." The constant feature of the-- 00:10:46.98\00:10:50.11 everything is-- the scripture to be fulfilled. 00:10:50.15\00:10:54.05 Now when Judas comes, Ranko, 00:10:54.08\00:10:56.99 and he brings this motley crowd, this mob, 00:10:57.02\00:11:04.66 it's such a paradox they couldn't come 00:11:04.69\00:11:06.80 during the day time because the crowds would react. 00:11:06.83\00:11:09.86 So they have to come at night as cowards. 00:11:09.90\00:11:13.40 Actually from this point on everything what's going on 00:11:13.44\00:11:17.47 in the gospel of Mathew and also in other gospel is, 00:11:17.51\00:11:22.48 the arrest in Gethsemane, 00:11:22.51\00:11:24.45 the trial in the high priest's house there, 00:11:24.48\00:11:28.15 a trial before Pilate, irregularity after irregularity. 00:11:28.18\00:11:33.62 Nothing is regular here. 00:11:33.66\00:11:35.36 The Jewish leaders were determined 00:11:35.39\00:11:38.36 to destroy Jesus, Can I say? 00:11:38.39\00:11:41.80 This was not about blood and flesh. 00:11:41.83\00:11:47.54 They're being used. Satan-- 00:11:47.57\00:11:50.71 they simply function as agents in Satan's hands. 00:11:50.74\00:11:53.21 And I think in our next program we'll explore 00:11:53.24\00:11:55.48 some of the illegalities of the trials and the arrest. 00:11:55.51\00:11:59.91 But then begins with something, 00:11:59.95\00:12:01.85 one of the most prominent disciples 00:12:01.88\00:12:03.92 is participant in that. 00:12:03.95\00:12:05.29 And we will see-- With the kiss-- 00:12:05.32\00:12:06.69 We will see next time another disciples, 00:12:06.72\00:12:09.32 prominent disciples-- What is going on? 00:12:09.36\00:12:12.59 Praise God we have a wonderful savior, Amen. 00:12:12.63\00:12:15.53 Who did not look his own conformity, his own good. 00:12:15.56\00:12:20.94 He came down to die for you and me. 00:12:20.97\00:12:24.54 That's the main reason why He came. 00:12:24.57\00:12:29.11 And as we're studying this topic we can say 00:12:29.14\00:12:31.88 "Thank you Jesus for everything that you have done for us." 00:12:31.91\00:12:35.45
