Hi and welcome to the Books of the Books series here on 3ABN. 00:00:22.22\00:00:25.19 We're exploring the Gospel of Matthew. 00:00:25.22\00:00:27.52 I am Glenn Russell, Professor of Religion at Andrews University, 00:00:27.56\00:00:30.79 here with a friend 00:00:30.83\00:00:32.16 and Seminary Professor, Dr. Ranko Stefanovich. 00:00:32.19\00:00:35.16 Ranko, it's been a wonderful journey 00:00:35.20\00:00:36.87 going through the gospel of Mathew. 00:00:36.90\00:00:39.17 Some how, it just touches my life and I am sure, 00:00:39.20\00:00:41.84 yours each time we get into scripture. 00:00:41.87\00:00:43.74 Yes, I've been teaching Gospel of Matthew 00:00:43.77\00:00:46.34 and doing much deeper research 00:00:46.37\00:00:49.04 into this book for about seventeen years. 00:00:49.08\00:00:51.55 And every time, even today and even during 00:00:51.58\00:00:54.48 the taping of this series, every time the detail 00:00:54.52\00:00:58.89 here and detail there that impacts my life 00:00:58.92\00:01:01.96 and make think and to come much closer to Jesus Christ. 00:01:01.99\00:01:05.36 It's a wonderful gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:01:05.39\00:01:07.20 The wonderful privilege to study God's word. Yes. 00:01:07.23\00:01:09.53 Let's ask God to direct our study here today. 00:01:09.56\00:01:13.07 Lord as we come into your presence, 00:01:13.10\00:01:17.27 we don't want to rush in with our ideas and our opinions. 00:01:17.31\00:01:19.64 We want to pause and ask 00:01:19.67\00:01:21.68 that you'll take away any preconceptions. 00:01:21.71\00:01:24.15 May we hear your word. 00:01:24.18\00:01:26.15 May we listen carefully for your voice. 00:01:26.18\00:01:28.85 In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Amen. 00:01:28.88\00:01:32.75 You know, Ranko, we've been taking this journey 00:01:32.79\00:01:35.06 with Jesus through the gospel of Mathew 00:01:35.09\00:01:37.43 and we've come up to the very end of His earthly ministry. 00:01:37.46\00:01:41.33 Now we can't say the end of His life because though his life 00:01:41.36\00:01:44.30 ended He's a resurrected by lord. 00:01:44.33\00:01:46.27 But we see the end of His earthly ministry 00:01:46.30\00:01:48.54 here just about the time of the cross. 00:01:48.57\00:01:51.91 And He's just concluded 00:01:51.94\00:01:53.27 the Lord's Supper with his disciples. 00:01:53.31\00:01:55.38 You know there is just a little thought from the east 00:01:55.41\00:01:57.45 that I think can be worthwhile here. 00:01:57.48\00:01:59.95 In the Middle East where I grew up, 00:02:00.05\00:02:01.88 if you share a meal with someone, 00:02:01.92\00:02:04.75 especially someone who has harmed you, 00:02:04.79\00:02:07.46 you're extending forgiveness and friendship. 00:02:07.49\00:02:09.69 And I marvel of fact that Jesus, till the very end, 00:02:09.72\00:02:13.06 keeps reaching out to Judas. 00:02:13.09\00:02:14.96 He knows what he will do. 00:02:15.00\00:02:16.46 He understands he's the betrayer. 00:02:16.50\00:02:17.83 He reveals he is a betrayer. 00:02:17.87\00:02:19.37 But He still keeps reaching out to him. 00:02:19.40\00:02:21.34 One more chance, but instead Judas turns away. 00:02:21.37\00:02:27.14 Actually when we are talking about the Lord's Supper, 00:02:27.18\00:02:30.31 we forget to one aspect. 00:02:30.35\00:02:33.15 The meaning of a meal eating together as you just mentioned. 00:02:33.18\00:02:37.05 You know, while we are here taping this series 00:02:37.09\00:02:39.42 we made several, you know, visits together 00:02:39.45\00:02:42.16 to eat to eat together. 00:02:42.19\00:02:43.56 As you eat there are bonds that are created. 00:02:43.59\00:02:45.99 When we go to the gospel of John, 00:02:46.03\00:02:47.86 actually this last supper begins with statement of John 00:02:47.86\00:02:51.63 that Jesus knew that the hour has, come and that He loved 00:02:51.67\00:02:56.00 those who're with Him as He loved them in the beginning. 00:02:56.04\00:02:59.07 And actually this meal strengthened those bones 00:02:59.11\00:03:02.28 between--so the communal service it's also lovely dinner 00:03:02.31\00:03:07.88 when people come much closer to each other 00:03:07.92\00:03:11.42 and much closer to God. 00:03:11.45\00:03:12.79 So as we worship with our fellow believers 00:03:12.82\00:03:15.46 and have a communion service, the Lord's Supper, 00:03:15.49\00:03:17.63 the bonds of faith and the bonds of fellowship 00:03:17.66\00:03:19.96 must be strengthened. 00:03:20.00\00:03:21.30 That's why we shouldn't avoid that experience. 00:03:21.33\00:03:23.33 Sometimes you'll feel, 00:03:23.37\00:03:24.70 "Eh, it's a little uncomfortable," so they miss it. 00:03:24.73\00:03:26.63 But it's rich experience. 00:03:26.67\00:03:28.00 Now, from that supper we go out to that dark experience 00:03:28.04\00:03:34.94 that Jesus had in Gethsemane. 00:03:34.98\00:03:36.68 Let's enter into that journey with Him. 00:03:36.71\00:03:38.98 So let us make a brief survey to see what was going on. 00:03:39.01\00:03:45.02 So after eating the last Passover with His disciples, 00:03:45.05\00:03:50.99 Jesus and the eleven they left the upper room. 00:03:51.03\00:03:56.23 Glenn, how many times you visit Jerusalem there? 00:03:56.26\00:03:59.77 And it's very hard to talk 00:03:59.80\00:04:01.60 about that without visualizing what happened. 00:04:01.64\00:04:04.61 Jesus left the city. 00:04:04.64\00:04:06.64 We still--when you go there, there're remnants 00:04:06.68\00:04:09.81 there of those stairways by which Jesus 00:04:09.84\00:04:14.28 was going down from the city. 00:04:14.32\00:04:16.35 So leaving the city they descended 00:04:16.38\00:04:18.75 down to the Kidron Valley. 00:04:18.79\00:04:21.49 And then they had to climb little bit 00:04:21.52\00:04:23.93 toward the Mount of Olives. 00:04:23.96\00:04:25.63 But in the foot of the Mount of Olives, 00:04:25.66\00:04:28.50 on the western side, there was one garden. 00:04:28.53\00:04:33.23 This is how the gospel call it. 00:04:33.27\00:04:35.07 It was called Gethsemane. 00:04:35.10\00:04:37.77 Probably, that place belonged to one of the friends of Jesus. 00:04:37.81\00:04:43.04 So very often, after very stormy days debating 00:04:43.08\00:04:50.92 with the Pharisees, Jesus needed the place to be alone 00:04:50.95\00:04:54.56 and to pray there, you know, 00:04:54.59\00:04:56.76 to have communication the Father. 00:04:56.79\00:04:58.36 Jesus would go to that place. 00:04:58.39\00:05:00.53 That place was very much familiar to Jesus 00:05:00.56\00:05:02.96 and the disciples because when Judas wanted to take that mob 00:05:03.00\00:05:07.24 to arrest Jesus he knew exactly where Jesus was. 00:05:07.27\00:05:11.07 So it was not difficult for them to find Jesus. 00:05:11.11\00:05:14.64 By the way Gethsemane means "Olive press." 00:05:14.68\00:05:19.95 Because the place was filled with Olive trees 00:05:19.98\00:05:24.79 there at the slope of the Mount of Olives. 00:05:24.82\00:05:26.76 That's why we called the Mount of Olives. 00:05:26.79\00:05:32.39 Those Olive trees that originally stood there 00:05:32.43\00:05:36.13 we know that few decades later 00:05:36.16\00:05:38.40 all those trees were cut by Romans. 00:05:38.43\00:05:40.87 In order to set to fire to destroy the city and the temple. 00:05:40.90\00:05:46.21 But out of the roots of those old trees new trees came out. 00:05:46.24\00:05:51.91 So we have somehow few gigantic Olive trees 00:05:51.95\00:05:56.95 that feature that place. 00:05:56.99\00:05:59.12 And some of those trees really 00:05:59.15\00:06:01.19 they can be traced back to that time, 00:06:01.22\00:06:03.86 even though we don't have originally trees, 00:06:03.89\00:06:05.99 but the trees that they came out, you know? 00:06:06.03\00:06:08.63 Specially that one, the gigantic tree 00:06:08.66\00:06:11.10 that is surrounded by that iron fence there, I had opportunity 00:06:11.13\00:06:17.67 to get a special permission with my wife 00:06:17.71\00:06:19.94 and to go there to touch the tree. 00:06:19.97\00:06:22.94 It was a special feeling 00:06:22.98\00:06:24.71 and Glenn, what we are talking is it really fill us with awe, 00:06:24.75\00:06:28.68 with a reverence because we are not now dealing 00:06:28.72\00:06:32.19 with every days activities and life of Jesus. 00:06:32.22\00:06:36.22 We're dealing with those last moments of Jesus life 00:06:36.26\00:06:40.00 when that destiny of entire human race 00:06:40.03\00:06:43.30 was there at a stake. 00:06:43.33\00:06:44.93 And I wanna emphasize what you said it was Jesus' 00:06:44.97\00:06:47.87 habit often to go there in prayer, yes. 00:06:47.90\00:06:50.31 He doesn't have a home address. 00:06:50.34\00:06:51.77 He doesn't have a quite place He can go to in prayer. 00:06:51.81\00:06:54.54 And the disciples usually had the routine 00:06:54.58\00:06:56.81 of perhaps praying with Him for a little while 00:06:56.85\00:06:59.55 and then they would fall asleep and He would continue. 00:06:59.58\00:07:01.72 So they're expecting another usual night. Right.. 00:07:01.75\00:07:05.29 Praying with Jesus for some-- a little while 00:07:05.32\00:07:07.36 and then they're asleep and He'll continue. 00:07:07.39\00:07:09.22 Jesus would pray the whole night they would be sleeping 00:07:09.26\00:07:11.83 the whole night and the morning they will join. 00:07:11.86\00:07:13.46 That this is what we expected. 00:07:13.50\00:07:15.43 That's our expectation. 00:07:15.46\00:07:16.80 But there was something else that happened 00:07:16.83\00:07:18.17 and I would like, Glenn, 00:07:18.20\00:07:19.53 to ask you if you would be willing to read 00:07:19.57\00:07:23.24 first from--sorry, its verse 36 to 46. 00:07:23.27\00:07:29.54 So we are in the gospel of Matthew, Chapter 26, 00:07:29.58\00:07:33.25 continuing the chain of events 00:07:33.28\00:07:37.55 after the Lord's Supper and verses 36 to 46. 00:07:37.59\00:07:43.49 Please, would you read it? 00:07:43.53\00:07:45.66 "Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, 00:07:45.69\00:07:49.33 and He said to His disciples, 00:07:49.36\00:07:51.10 'Sit here, while I go yonder and pray.' 00:07:51.13\00:07:54.14 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, 00:07:54.17\00:07:57.74 He began to be sorrowful and troubled. 00:07:57.77\00:08:01.41 Then He said to them, 'My soul is very sorrowful, 00:08:01.44\00:08:04.28 even to death, remain here, and watch with Me.' 00:08:04.31\00:08:09.15 And going a little further he fell on his face and prayed, 00:08:09.18\00:08:12.99 'My Father, if it is possible, 00:08:13.02\00:08:15.62 let this cup pass from me, nevertheless, 00:08:15.66\00:08:18.99 not as I will, but as thou will.' 00:08:19.03\00:08:21.83 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. 00:08:21.86\00:08:24.33 And He said to Peter, 00:08:24.37\00:08:26.53 'So, could you not watch with me one hour? 00:08:26.57\00:08:29.80 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. 00:08:29.84\00:08:32.91 The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.' 00:08:32.94\00:08:37.18 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, 00:08:37.21\00:08:39.91 'My Father, if this cannot pass unless 00:08:39.95\00:08:43.32 I drink it, thy will be done.' 00:08:43.35\00:08:46.45 And again He came and found them sleeping, 00:08:46.49\00:08:48.19 for their eyes were heavy. 00:08:48.22\00:08:50.86 So, leaving them again, He went away and prayed 00:08:50.89\00:08:53.70 for the third time, saying the same words. 00:08:53.73\00:08:58.10 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, 00:08:58.13\00:09:01.77 'Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? 00:09:01.80\00:09:04.44 Behold the hours at hand, and the Son of Man 00:09:04.47\00:09:07.08 is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 00:09:07.11\00:09:09.48 Rise, let us be going see, my betrayer is at hand.'" 00:09:09.51\00:09:14.85 What a scene? What a scene? 00:09:14.88\00:09:17.55 So what we have here it is Jesus came with His disciples 00:09:19.05\00:09:24.43 there in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:09:24.46\00:09:26.49 As you mentioned they expect the just usual routine. 00:09:26.53\00:09:30.40 They would go there, find little comfortable place, 00:09:30.43\00:09:33.97 comfortable you know, to sleep there. 00:09:34.00\00:09:36.44 And they knew what the master was doing. 00:09:36.47\00:09:38.34 He would go, little bit, far away from them and to sleep. 00:09:38.37\00:09:42.34 But this time something is different. 00:09:42.38\00:09:44.11 What is different? 00:09:44.15\00:09:45.48 Jesus takes those three disciples. 00:09:45.51\00:09:49.02 In gospel of Matthew and other gospels 00:09:49.05\00:09:52.25 they were three very close to Jesus. 00:09:52.29\00:09:54.96 There is something very interesting. 00:09:54.99\00:09:57.23 When I was young pastor I was always taught. 00:09:57.26\00:10:00.40 Please, when you are there in the church 00:10:00.43\00:10:02.46 you cannot have close friends 00:10:02.50\00:10:04.20 you have to treat all people equal. 00:10:04.23\00:10:06.90 But somehow my response was always even 00:10:06.94\00:10:09.70 Jesus had the church. 00:10:09.74\00:10:11.27 Had the twevle disciples and so many others 00:10:11.31\00:10:13.24 but He needed three people. 00:10:13.27\00:10:14.88 You need somebody very close 00:10:14.91\00:10:18.45 that sometimes you can talk to, sometimes that you can pray 00:10:18.48\00:10:21.55 and actually this is what happened. 00:10:21.58\00:10:23.32 But there is one element 00:10:23.35\00:10:25.09 that I would like here to underline. 00:10:25.12\00:10:27.46 You see Matthew, provides the description 00:10:27.49\00:10:31.06 about what is going on. 00:10:31.09\00:10:32.86 When you see it there is something 00:10:32.89\00:10:35.16 always missing in this description 00:10:35.20\00:10:37.30 of Gethsemane, why? 00:10:37.33\00:10:38.67 Because Matthew was one of those, 00:10:38.70\00:10:41.50 how many, eight, without Judas, okay, 00:10:41.54\00:10:44.51 who were sleeping there. 00:10:44.54\00:10:46.41 But when we go to the Gospel of John, 00:10:46.44\00:10:48.51 John was one of those three. 00:10:48.54\00:10:50.45 John provides the firsthand description, 00:10:50.48\00:10:54.62 account what took place. 00:10:54.65\00:10:56.52 And also we have some information coming from Luke 00:10:56.55\00:11:00.12 and we know that Luke got the most of his information 00:11:00.16\00:11:03.29 from Paul and also from Peter. 00:11:03.32\00:11:05.93 So the firsthand experience 00:11:05.96\00:11:07.56 and we would really like few times to reflect 00:11:07.60\00:11:11.77 to those other accounts to see what was going on. 00:11:11.80\00:11:14.97 So, Glenn, Jesus was there and please 00:11:15.00\00:11:17.94 what now happened there. 00:11:17.97\00:11:19.31 Well, your point about going with these three, 00:11:19.34\00:11:22.11 who were His closest friend. 00:11:22.14\00:11:23.85 And I think, we see a time when Jesus needed their support. 00:11:23.88\00:11:29.38 And that tells us something about humanness of Jesus. 00:11:29.42\00:11:32.49 Sometimes we get the impression that this was just a script 00:11:32.52\00:11:36.56 that He was going through He wasn't really suffering. 00:11:36.59\00:11:39.36 That really the cross-- He couldn't have failed. 00:11:39.39\00:11:42.13 But we're entering into the hinge of history. 00:11:42.16\00:11:45.17 This is the most critical point in human history, 00:11:45.20\00:11:47.74 in these hours you're leading up to the cross. 00:11:47.77\00:11:49.84 But there is something very unusual and--the disciples 00:11:49.87\00:11:54.58 were very slow to understand. 00:11:54.61\00:11:56.81 For the first time, in accompany with them, 00:11:56.85\00:12:03.62 Jesus does not go faraway to pray. 00:12:03.65\00:12:05.85 He says to His disciples 00:12:05.89\00:12:08.19 please, would you somehow pray with me? 00:12:08.22\00:12:13.60 He's asking for their prayers as well. 00:12:13.63\00:12:18.53 He has said, "My soul is very sorrowful, 00:12:18.57\00:12:20.84 even to death remained and watch with me." 00:12:20.87\00:12:22.77 And Passover was a feast of watching. 00:12:22.80\00:12:25.61 It was all about watching. 00:12:25.64\00:12:27.48 They should have sensed the timing. 00:12:27.51\00:12:29.81 I believe the devil is working hard here. 00:12:29.84\00:12:31.98 And prior to death he was talking to them constantly, 00:12:32.01\00:12:35.58 "We are going to Jerusalem to die." 00:12:35.62\00:12:37.19 Then after last time, "the time, 00:12:37.22\00:12:39.12 the hour has come and let's go there." 00:12:39.15\00:12:41.56 They knew but still they did not understand. 00:12:41.59\00:12:44.23 And what a lesson that is to us because 00:12:44.26\00:12:46.29 there's times in our life 00:12:46.33\00:12:47.66 when we don't sense what time it is, 00:12:47.66\00:12:49.40 we don't know what tomorrow brings. 00:12:49.43\00:12:51.37 We don't know what's ahead and we need to spend 00:12:51.40\00:12:54.17 those times in prayer with God. 00:12:54.20\00:12:55.57 Jesus is trying to lead them they didn't recognize the time. 00:12:55.60\00:12:59.41 And so they missed this opportunity to strengthen 00:12:59.44\00:13:01.81 themselves and it would have been wonderful if they had. 00:13:01.84\00:13:04.95 How often we missed God's timing also. 00:13:04.98\00:13:08.08 And now there're here a few details 00:13:08.12\00:13:10.29 that we have to mention. 00:13:10.32\00:13:11.65 According to the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 20 to 41, 00:13:11.69\00:13:14.49 it says, "That Jesus went far away 00:13:14.52\00:13:20.06 from them about a stones thrown." 00:13:20.10\00:13:23.87 How far is that, Glenn? 00:13:23.90\00:13:25.37 One hundred yards? Maybe. 00:13:25.40\00:13:28.27 This is very important element 00:13:28.30\00:13:29.64 that usually the readers of the Bible 00:13:29.67\00:13:32.04 they do not pay attention. 00:13:32.07\00:13:33.41 That's one detail, how far? 00:13:33.44\00:13:35.01 He was some distance from them. 00:13:35.04\00:13:38.91 Now we read, he said, verse 39, 00:13:38.95\00:13:42.82 "He went little beyond them fell on His face and He prayed, 00:13:42.85\00:13:47.42 'My father if it is possible let these cup pass 00:13:47.46\00:13:51.33 from me, yet not as I will but as you will.'" 00:13:51.36\00:13:54.96 And then we read it in Gospel of Matthew 00:13:55.00\00:13:57.00 we don't get the full picture. 00:13:57.03\00:13:58.97 But there're few texts, one text is the gospel of Luke. 00:13:59.00\00:14:03.74 The same Chapter 20 to 44 when we read, 00:14:03.77\00:14:08.11 that actually there was a sweat mixed with the blood 00:14:08.14\00:14:14.58 that was coming out of His skin. 00:14:14.62\00:14:16.58 That's one, but another element is, 00:14:16.62\00:14:19.92 Glenn, I would like to ask you if you can read 00:14:19.95\00:14:22.42 Hebrews Chapter 5, verse 7. 00:14:22.46\00:14:26.09 This is another text. We have two texts. 00:14:26.13\00:14:29.00 When we put those texts together 00:14:29.03\00:14:31.33 we can see the agony that Jesus suffer there 00:14:31.37\00:14:33.54 in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:14:33.57\00:14:34.90 Hebrews Chapter five. Yeah, verse seven. 00:14:34.94\00:14:39.04 We're here in Hebrews, Chapter five, 00:14:39.07\00:14:40.58 but Ranko I think we'll take a break 00:14:40.61\00:14:42.01 we'll comeback to explore this text. 00:14:42.04\00:14:43.81 We will be right back after a break, stay tuned. 00:14:43.85\00:14:46.38
