Amen. Amen. 00:01:52.71\00:01:57.18 Ranko, before we go into our study for the today, 00:01:57.21\00:02:01.28 could you please take us back and help us get an overview? 00:02:01.32\00:02:05.19 Many times we read these parts of the Bible 00:02:05.22\00:02:06.96 we don't recognize the timeframe 00:02:06.99\00:02:08.66 when the last week of Jesus' life 00:02:08.69\00:02:10.73 would often call the Passion Week. Yes. 00:02:10.76\00:02:13.13 Walk us through the each day, Sunday through Friday. 00:02:13.16\00:02:16.33 What happened and when it took place? Okay. 00:02:16.36\00:02:17.70 So we want to make clear 00:02:17.73\00:02:19.80 that we are dealing with the last week of Jesus' life 00:02:19.83\00:02:24.61 before the crucifixion. So we started-- 00:02:24.64\00:02:28.41 okay, the last portion 00:02:28.44\00:02:29.98 of the Gospel of Mathew by reading about Jesus 00:02:30.01\00:02:33.95 who riding the donkey entered Jerusalem there. 00:02:33.98\00:02:38.05 Okay. The triumphal entry. 00:02:38.09\00:02:40.62 Actually that event took place on Sunday. 00:02:40.66\00:02:46.09 Most likely on Monday the following day 00:02:46.13\00:02:50.03 Jesus went there to the temple to cleanse the temple. 00:02:50.07\00:02:55.14 It was followed by the cursing of the victory in which 00:02:55.17\00:02:59.01 Jesus announced the destiny of the leaders of the nations. 00:02:59.04\00:03:04.81 And we had a long debate 00:03:04.85\00:03:06.82 and controversies with the Pharisees. 00:03:06.85\00:03:08.62 You remember that, they were chasing 00:03:08.65\00:03:10.29 after Jesus trying to confuse Him 00:03:10.32\00:03:12.15 with the questions et cetera. 00:03:12.19\00:03:13.52 And to trap him, yeah. That was on Monday. 00:03:13.56\00:03:16.12 Then on Tuesday the following day 00:03:16.16\00:03:19.03 probably few more traps of the Pharisees. 00:03:19.06\00:03:24.23 And on that day on Tuesday Jesus made-- 00:03:24.27\00:03:28.84 okay, that speech against the Pharisees and telling them, 00:03:28.87\00:03:34.18 "Now your house will be left desolate on that day." 00:03:34.21\00:03:38.11 For the last time Jesus walked out of the temple, 00:03:38.15\00:03:42.82 went to the Mount of Olives. 00:03:42.85\00:03:45.62 The disciples asked Him that question 00:03:45.65\00:03:48.26 about the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem 00:03:48.29\00:03:51.83 and also about the sign of His coming. 00:03:51.86\00:03:54.60 All of these things happened on Tuesday. 00:03:54.63\00:03:57.70 After Tuesday Jesus did not return 00:03:57.73\00:04:03.34 to the city or to the temple. 00:04:03.37\00:04:05.04 By the way, Glenn, we were in Jerusalem there. 00:04:05.07\00:04:07.61 I myself, I was in the city 00:04:07.64\00:04:09.64 and finally I decided to go with my wife 00:04:09.68\00:04:13.31 to walk to the place called Bethany 00:04:13.35\00:04:16.28 which is about two miles, I think, 00:04:16.32\00:04:18.15 if I remember it's not far away. 00:04:18.19\00:04:20.06 It took me and my wife probably 00:04:20.09\00:04:21.62 about 45 minutes to walk there. 00:04:21.66\00:04:24.39 But when you walk from the Mount of Olives 00:04:24.43\00:04:26.63 it's even much, much closer. 00:04:26.66\00:04:28.23 So Jesus from the Mount of Olives, 00:04:28.26\00:04:30.63 He walked with His disciples to Bethany-- 00:04:30.67\00:04:33.40 Who was in Bethany there? His beloved friends. 00:04:33.44\00:04:36.17 His beloved friends, Mary and Martha. 00:04:36.20\00:04:38.44 We know the resurrection of Lazarus. 00:04:38.47\00:04:41.24 So on Wednesday actually Jesus was in Bethany. 00:04:41.28\00:04:47.75 So now Glenn, what we are reading here 00:04:47.78\00:04:49.68 in chapter 26 verses 1, can we say 1:19, 00:04:49.72\00:04:57.59 actually all of these things they happen on Wednesday 00:04:57.63\00:05:01.50 while Jesus was there in Bethany. 00:05:01.53\00:05:05.73 And then just a preview on Thursday 00:05:05.77\00:05:08.67 we have the Lord's Supper and Gethsemane 00:05:08.70\00:05:12.24 that night and the cross on Friday--Yes. 00:05:12.27\00:05:14.14 Just to fill out the-- Yes. 00:05:14.18\00:05:15.51 We wanted so far that our viewers 00:05:15.54\00:05:18.11 know how the last week of life of Jesus 00:05:18.15\00:05:21.12 will get to provide the chronology of that. 00:05:21.15\00:05:23.12 So while Jesus was in Bethany, evidently the Pharisees, 00:05:23.15\00:05:27.12 you know, they missed Jesus' company. 00:05:27.16\00:05:30.99 For this, several days they were constantly chasing after Jesus. 00:05:31.03\00:05:34.36 Now Jesus-- where is Jesus? 00:05:34.40\00:05:36.23 And then something happened from verse one to five. 00:05:36.26\00:05:39.47 "Now when Jesus had finished all these sayings--" 00:05:39.50\00:05:41.14 You remember that phrase when Jesus finished, 00:05:41.17\00:05:44.07 it always marked the blocks, 00:05:44.11\00:05:45.67 you know, of those sayings of Jesus. 00:05:45.71\00:05:47.54 "He said to His disciples, 00:05:47.58\00:05:49.31 'You know that after two days the Passover is coming, 00:05:49.34\00:05:51.88 and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.' 00:05:51.91\00:05:55.05 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people 00:05:55.08\00:05:57.72 gathered in the palace of the high priest, 00:05:57.75\00:05:59.65 who was called Caiaphas. 00:05:59.69\00:06:01.66 and took counsel together in order to arrest 00:06:01.69\00:06:04.26 Jesus by stealth and kill him. 00:06:04.29\00:06:06.46 But they said, 'Not during the feast, 00:06:06.49\00:06:09.23 lest there be a tumult among the people.'" 00:06:09.26\00:06:11.63 By the way they didn't have an address for Jesus. No. 00:06:11.67\00:06:14.64 He is an itinerant. Yeah. 00:06:14.67\00:06:16.81 So they are now determined, "We have to do away with Jesus." 00:06:16.84\00:06:22.48 But what about this not because of the people, 00:06:22.51\00:06:25.95 they're fearful of the crowd. 00:06:25.98\00:06:28.05 Interesting how people can be an excuse. 00:06:28.08\00:06:32.39 Now as they are-- can I say 00:06:32.42\00:06:37.03 as they are having a meeting trying to decide 00:06:37.06\00:06:39.39 what to do with Jesus? 00:06:39.43\00:06:40.76 Jesus is there in Bethany. 00:06:40.80\00:06:43.03 And He's invited to attend most likely dinner or lunch 00:06:43.06\00:06:49.00 at the home of Simon, the former leper that Jesus healed him. 00:06:49.04\00:06:52.81 And evidently, the person prepared the meal 00:06:52.84\00:06:56.44 as a token of his gratefulness to Jesus and then, 00:06:56.48\00:07:00.35 something happen, Glenn. 00:07:00.38\00:07:01.72 This is fantastic. We have to read it verse 6-13. 00:07:01.75\00:07:05.29 "Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, 00:07:05.32\00:07:08.92 a woman came upon Him 00:07:08.96\00:07:10.79 with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, 00:07:10.83\00:07:13.90 and she poured it on His head, 00:07:13.93\00:07:15.93 as He sat at the table. 00:07:15.96\00:07:17.83 But when the disciples saw it, 00:07:17.87\00:07:19.50 they were indignant, saying, "Why this waste? 00:07:19.53\00:07:23.41 For this ointment might have been sold for a large sum, 00:07:23.44\00:07:26.68 and given to the poor." 00:07:26.71\00:07:28.58 But Jesus, aware of this, 00:07:28.61\00:07:29.94 said to them "Why do you trouble this woman? 00:07:29.98\00:07:33.35 For she has done a beautiful thing to Me. 00:07:33.38\00:07:36.25 For you always have the poor with you, 00:07:36.28\00:07:38.65 but you will not always have me. 00:07:38.69\00:07:40.56 In pouring this ointment on my body 00:07:40.59\00:07:42.49 she has done it to prepare Me for burial. 00:07:42.52\00:07:44.93 Truly, I say to you, 00:07:44.96\00:07:46.83 wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, 00:07:46.86\00:07:49.66 what she has done will be told in memory of her." 00:07:49.70\00:07:52.73 Okay. It's very important when we started this event 00:07:52.77\00:07:58.74 also to go to the Gospel of John Chapter 12 00:07:58.77\00:08:02.18 because in John Chapter 12 00:08:02.21\00:08:04.01 we have few more details that Matthew does mention here. 00:08:04.05\00:08:08.22 Keep in mind that John was always 00:08:08.25\00:08:10.05 one of the three very close to Jesus 00:08:10.09\00:08:12.15 so he knew some details that evidently 00:08:12.19\00:08:15.76 Mathew did not have access. 00:08:15.79\00:08:17.86 And what are--what are the details that we have? 00:08:17.89\00:08:21.36 Number one we have here a woman in Gospel of John 00:08:21.40\00:08:25.80 that woman has a name. 00:08:25.83\00:08:28.97 It's the sister of Lazarus, Mary, okay? 00:08:29.00\00:08:33.94 Another thing is John chapter 12 is telling us 00:08:33.98\00:08:39.21 that actually she spent about three hundred dinari 00:08:39.25\00:08:43.49 or denarius to buy this perfume. 00:08:43.52\00:08:47.32 Almost a year's wage. 00:08:47.36\00:08:48.69 So if one denarius is daily wage so-- 00:08:48.72\00:08:54.20 Your salary--She worked all year in order to buy. 00:08:57.17\00:09:01.74 So we have here some details. Why did she do it? 00:09:01.77\00:09:05.11 Evidently as a token of her thankfulness 00:09:05.14\00:09:09.21 and gratitude to Jesus what He did for her personally. 00:09:09.24\00:09:15.62 If Mary was indeed that woman out 00:09:15.65\00:09:19.99 which Jesus cast out those demons, etcetera, 00:09:20.02\00:09:25.06 that she had very, very problematic past. 00:09:25.09\00:09:28.30 She was very much, much forgiven. 00:09:28.33\00:09:31.07 And also what Jesus did for her brother, 00:09:31.10\00:09:33.64 you know, resurrection of Lazarus. 00:09:33.67\00:09:35.84 It was actually her precious gift. 00:09:35.87\00:09:39.21 You know, when you buy a gift the person 00:09:39.24\00:09:41.31 that you love, you don't try to save money. 00:09:41.34\00:09:44.35 You do your most-- you try to do your best 00:09:44.38\00:09:48.05 because you love that person. 00:09:48.08\00:09:49.68 And this is what she did for her beloved teacher 00:09:49.72\00:09:54.26 as a token of gratitude for what He did for her. 00:09:54.29\00:09:58.59 We'll see that she had one motivation which Jesus accepts 00:09:58.63\00:10:02.43 but He even indicates 00:10:02.46\00:10:03.80 it has more meaning than she understood. 00:10:03.83\00:10:05.53 Yeah. Actually He said, 00:10:05.57\00:10:08.34 "She anointed me actually prepare me for my burial 00:10:08.37\00:10:13.11 because some thing was to happen very, very soon." 00:10:13.14\00:10:17.05 How thankful we are that 00:10:17.08\00:10:18.41 she was obedient to the spirit leading her. 00:10:18.45\00:10:21.25 Now not all the disciples were thrilled with this decision. 00:10:21.28\00:10:24.62 And it becomes pivotal in Judas' response. 00:10:24.65\00:10:28.56 Actually it is a game 00:10:28.59\00:10:30.79 that we have to go to the Gospel of John, 00:10:30.83\00:10:34.46 because here it said that some of the disciples protested. 00:10:34.46\00:10:39.33 "Why we do not take this money 00:10:39.37\00:10:41.20 and distribute to the poor people?" 00:10:41.24\00:10:42.67 And Jesus was-- actually John provides 00:10:42.70\00:10:45.71 another detail that not all disciples did it. 00:10:45.74\00:10:49.58 It was Judas, himself, who protested. 00:10:49.61\00:10:52.11 They may have agreed with some of it. Yes. 00:10:52.15\00:10:53.95 And, you know, the book Desire of Ages 00:10:53.98\00:10:55.35 has a wonderful insight that tells us 00:10:55.38\00:10:57.45 that many of the conflict among the disciples 00:10:57.49\00:11:00.09 when they argued about who is the greatest 00:11:00.12\00:11:01.99 were started by Judas, stirred by his spirit. 00:11:02.02\00:11:04.33 You know, He always knew how to do it. Yes. 00:11:04.36\00:11:07.96 You know, keep in mind he was very influential, 00:11:08.00\00:11:10.33 he was educated person. 00:11:10.37\00:11:11.87 He knew how to manipulate it with human minds. 00:11:11.90\00:11:14.54 Evidently, this event-- okay, 00:11:14.57\00:11:18.67 I would like to put it in this way. 00:11:18.71\00:11:20.24 On the same day when Mary brought to Jesus 00:11:20.28\00:11:26.88 a precious gift of love. That same day, see, 00:11:26.92\00:11:31.22 three hundred denarius and the annual salary. 00:11:31.25\00:11:34.72 At the same moment Judas made decision 00:11:34.76\00:11:37.96 to go to betray his master 00:11:37.99\00:11:40.33 for how much for a price of a slave. 00:11:40.36\00:11:43.63 Is it a tragedy and irony? They're in the same room. 00:11:43.67\00:11:47.84 They were both close to the savior 00:11:47.87\00:11:50.14 but two different responses. So now we go to-- 00:11:50.17\00:11:52.94 And Jesus says that, "She's done a beautiful thing to me." 00:11:52.97\00:11:55.51 He understood something, 00:11:55.54\00:11:58.68 somehow the Holy Spirit prompted Mary 00:11:58.71\00:12:01.65 to do something as a preview of His burial. 00:12:01.68\00:12:05.09 So what was that-- what is the problem with Judas? 00:12:05.12\00:12:08.22 Well he's never-- Jesus is never anointed later. 00:12:08.26\00:12:10.73 They don't get to Him in time. 00:12:10.76\00:12:12.76 Actually, Judas-- Judas, 00:12:12.79\00:12:15.06 he joined the group for a wrong reason. 00:12:15.10\00:12:18.80 He hoped because he was the most influential 00:12:18.83\00:12:20.87 when Jesus establishes His kingdom, 00:12:20.90\00:12:22.97 by the way all the disciples 00:12:23.00\00:12:24.47 hope something to happen to them, 00:12:24.51\00:12:26.01 you know, but he assumed 00:12:26.04\00:12:28.51 the first place is reserve for him there in the kingdom. 00:12:28.54\00:12:31.58 But when he saw that Jesus was doing nothing 00:12:31.61\00:12:36.42 to take opportunity and grasp the power. 00:12:36.45\00:12:40.22 By the way in the Gospel of John chapter 6, 00:12:40.26\00:12:42.99 we read clearly that actually it was Judas 00:12:43.02\00:12:45.49 who prompted the people and inspire them, 00:12:45.53\00:12:47.56 you know, to make Jesus king by force. 00:12:47.60\00:12:50.00 He was the one always behind 00:12:50.03\00:12:51.73 the scene working all those things. 00:12:51.77\00:12:56.54 But now there is also in Gospel of Luke Chapter 22 verse 3, 00:12:56.57\00:13:01.98 we read something that there is not it's not found in Mathew 26. 00:13:02.01\00:13:07.45 It said at that moment Satan entered into Judas. 00:13:07.48\00:13:13.12 It's Luke Chapter 22 verse 3. 00:13:13.15\00:13:16.12 And Might we mention that this is not the first time. 00:13:16.16\00:13:18.99 As you've said Judas had been beside Jesus 00:13:19.03\00:13:23.10 part of his ministry. How close, Ranko, 00:13:23.13\00:13:25.80 how close he was? 00:13:25.83\00:13:27.67 But day by day he resisted the Holy Spirit. 00:13:27.70\00:13:30.57 Now his life is completely given over. 00:13:30.61\00:13:33.27 Do you remember that we're talking about unpardonable sin? 00:13:33.31\00:13:36.58 This is exactly. Judas was resisting the influence 00:13:36.61\00:13:41.45 of the Holy Spirit constantly, constantly, constantly. 00:13:41.48\00:13:43.92 And this is what unpardonable sin is. 00:13:43.95\00:13:46.39 He put himself into the position that actually 00:13:46.42\00:13:49.16 the Holy Spirit could not do for him anything more. 00:13:49.19\00:13:52.99 Now he'll be used by the devil. 00:13:53.03\00:13:54.36 So, the--Satan is entering him-- before we go to the break, 00:13:54.40\00:13:58.70 can we just see what is-- okay 00:13:58.73\00:14:01.54 or maybe to wait for the break. Okay. 00:14:01.57\00:14:03.51 Well, there is much more here in the story. 00:14:03.54\00:14:05.64 We're gonna come back. Don't go away. 00:14:05.67\00:14:07.51 Yes. We will be right back after the break. 00:14:07.54\00:14:09.24
