Hi, I'm Glenn Russell. 00:00:22.37\00:00:23.58 Welcome to our special series on the Book of Matthew. 00:00:23.59\00:00:27.43 This is one of the exciting series 00:00:27.44\00:00:30.06 here at 3ABN entitled Books of the Book. 00:00:30.07\00:00:33.15 I'm sure you'll enjoy a fascinating journey 00:00:33.16\00:00:35.45 through the Gospel of Matthew. 00:00:35.46\00:00:37.31 We'll be exploring the book from beginning to end looking 00:00:37.32\00:00:40.09 at key ideas and passages with our guest and teacher, 00:00:40.10\00:00:44.18 Dr Ranko Stefanovic. 00:00:44.19\00:00:45.85 Before we begin let's enter into prayer. 00:00:45.86\00:00:50.40 Lord, before we open your word, 00:00:50.41\00:00:52.79 we ask that you'll open our hearts. 00:00:52.80\00:00:55.20 We need you to come and teach us and guide us 00:00:55.21\00:00:57.44 into the deeper things of Your word, 00:00:57.45\00:00:59.47 for Your glory, in Jesus' name, amen. 00:00:59.48\00:01:03.46 Now, let's meet our teacher. 00:01:03.47\00:01:05.15 I'm so glad to welcome Dr Ranko Stefanovic. 00:01:05.16\00:01:07.85 Ranko is a beloved teacher, author, pastor and speaker. 00:01:07.86\00:01:14.38 You teach at the Andrews University Theological Seminary, 00:01:14.39\00:01:17.47 Professor of New Testament. 00:01:17.48\00:01:18.80 Ranko, welcome dear friend and colleague, 00:01:18.81\00:01:21.37 and tell us a little bit about this process 00:01:21.38\00:01:24.66 that we are getting into about exploring 00:01:24.67\00:01:26.35 the Book of Matthew, What's it all about? 00:01:26.36\00:01:29.05 As we know everybody who reads the Bible 00:01:29.06\00:01:33.45 is aware that there are four gospels in the Bible. All right. 00:01:33.46\00:01:38.88 But when you read those four gospels, 00:01:38.89\00:01:42.46 there are some many similarities, 00:01:42.47\00:01:45.32 and there are many differences between them. 00:01:45.33\00:01:48.39 The first three gospels Matthew, Mark and Luke 00:01:48.40\00:01:52.34 are very much alike. 00:01:52.35\00:01:53.90 We call them synoptics. 00:01:53.91\00:01:56.37 While the Gospel of John is little bit different, 00:01:56.38\00:02:00.07 the early Christians they called it spiritual gospel, 00:02:00.08\00:02:03.01 because it contained some spiritual insight into 00:02:03.02\00:02:06.17 the life of Jesus that's not found 00:02:06.18\00:02:08.82 in the first three synoptic gospel. 00:02:08.83\00:02:10.77 Let me just explain to the -- viewers the word 'synoptic', 00:02:10.78\00:02:13.89 it's actually Greek. 00:02:13.90\00:02:15.91 The Greek word 'syn' or 'sone' means together 00:02:15.92\00:02:19.05 or with, an optic which is related optic, 00:02:19.06\00:02:22.92 it simply means seen together. 00:02:22.93\00:02:25.14 So it's a reference to the first three gospels 00:02:25.15\00:02:28.31 that they describe the life of Jesus 00:02:28.32\00:02:31.76 through the same glasses something we look at. 00:02:31.77\00:02:33.67 Now, Ranko, the word 'gospel' where do we get that from? 00:02:33.68\00:02:38.91 Yeah. The word 'gospel' simply in the original language 00:02:38.92\00:02:43.85 Greek means the good news. 00:02:43.86\00:02:46.06 And it is good news. It's a good news 00:02:46.07\00:02:47.78 about Jesus Christ. 00:02:47.79\00:02:49.40 So at the very beginning the word referred 00:02:49.41\00:02:52.04 to the preaching of the gospel, 00:02:52.05\00:02:53.77 you know, in the early Christians after the ascension 00:02:53.78\00:02:56.99 of Jesus to the heavenly places, they went around to proclaim 00:02:57.00\00:03:00.78 the good news about Jesus Christ who came down to the earth, 00:03:00.79\00:03:05.79 He ascended there to the heavenly places. 00:03:05.80\00:03:08.18 That was the good news about the salvation 00:03:08.19\00:03:10.28 that all the human beings 00:03:10.29\00:03:11.73 they could have through Jesus Christ. 00:03:11.74\00:03:14.55 But it was after, mostly likely Mark 00:03:14.56\00:03:17.32 if you open the Gospel of Mark Chapter 1, 00:03:17.33\00:03:19.94 Mark refers to his book as the gospel of Jesus Christ, 00:03:19.95\00:03:24.65 so after that from singular gospel, it came the plural 00:03:24.66\00:03:30.38 usage of the gospels with reference 00:03:30.39\00:03:33.37 to the four accounts of the life of Jesus. 00:03:33.38\00:03:36.65 So the proclamation became the writings. 00:03:36.66\00:03:38.84 It's been the writings. 00:03:38.85\00:03:40.64 It's for the- it's for the same purposes. 00:03:40.65\00:03:42.73 It's for the preaching of the good news about Jesus Christ. 00:03:42.74\00:03:46.67 Now, as we think about this gospel according to Matthew, 00:03:46.68\00:03:50.06 we're reminded who's really the author he wrote, 00:03:50.07\00:03:52.51 but God is the author. 00:03:52.52\00:03:54.17 And what is he helping us to see what picture of Jesus? 00:03:54.18\00:03:57.76 What does he wanting us to know? 00:03:57.77\00:03:58.89 See in order to answer that question, 00:03:58.90\00:04:03.57 first we've to ask another question is -- 00:04:03.58\00:04:05.51 why do we have four gospels? 00:04:05.52\00:04:07.67 Everybody who teaches four gospels, we know that sometimes 00:04:07.68\00:04:10.90 it's not easy to do - do it. 00:04:10.91\00:04:14.51 Why? Because there are some, 00:04:14.52\00:04:15.86 sometimes slight differences, etcetera. 00:04:15.87\00:04:19.16 So, why do we have four gospels? 00:04:19.17\00:04:21.18 We've to understand that the four gospels 00:04:21.19\00:04:24.95 were written by four individuals, 00:04:24.96\00:04:28.58 and they had each one of them had a particular 00:04:28.59\00:04:32.45 kind of people in mind to whom they wrote. 00:04:32.46\00:04:36.12 So, the four gospels are four portraits of Jesus 00:04:36.13\00:04:41.22 addressing different needs and circumstances 00:04:41.23\00:04:45.65 of those original readers who read them. 00:04:45.66\00:04:48.89 So, one Savior, four gospels. Four gospels. 00:04:48.90\00:04:51.77 And we would expect that they'd be a little bit 00:04:51.78\00:04:53.78 different because if not, why have four of them. 00:04:53.79\00:04:56.41 If they're just gonna be a copy of each other. 00:04:56.42\00:04:58.20 Actually, in the book, very good book 00:04:58.21\00:05:01.43 titled The Selected Messages. 00:05:01.44\00:05:04.73 There is something very interesting, it says 00:05:04.74\00:05:06.71 "In our Bible, we might ask, why we need Matthew, 00:05:06.72\00:05:10.81 Mark, Luke, and John in the gospels. 00:05:10.82\00:05:13.57 Why need the Acts of the Apostles, 00:05:13.58\00:05:15.39 and variety of writers in the Epistles, 00:05:15.40\00:05:17.59 go over the same thing? 00:05:17.60\00:05:19.18 There are sometimes "petition." 00:05:19.19\00:05:22.76 He says, the Lord gave His Word in just the way 00:05:22.77\00:05:26.04 He wanted it to come. 00:05:26.05\00:05:27.75 He gave it through different writers, 00:05:27.76\00:05:30.07 and now it's significant, each having his own individuality, 00:05:30.08\00:05:34.40 going through the same history. 00:05:34.41\00:05:37.13 Their testimonies are brought together in one book. 00:05:37.14\00:05:40.70 They do not represent things in just the same style. 00:05:40.71\00:05:44.29 Each has an experience of his own, and this diversity 00:05:44.30\00:05:47.89 broadens and deepens the -- knowledge that is brought out 00:05:47.90\00:05:52.10 to meet the necessities of varied minds. 00:05:52.11\00:05:55.25 So, we'll put four gospels together, 00:05:55.26\00:05:57.36 we'd really have the -- complete picture of Jesus 00:05:57.37\00:05:59.68 that appeals to different people 00:05:59.69\00:06:01.78 in their needs of circumstances. 00:06:01.79\00:06:03.13 So, the very diversity gives us the richness. Yes. 00:06:03.14\00:06:06.21 Christ is so - so wonderful, it can't be explained 00:06:06.22\00:06:09.34 in just one reference. Okay. 00:06:09.35\00:06:11.62 So, you've said a little bit about why, who and - and when, 00:06:11.63\00:06:16.71 and the Bible wasn't just written for us today, 00:06:16.72\00:06:20.39 it had an original audience. Help us with that. 00:06:20.40\00:06:22.66 So, the Gospel of Matthew, like, the other gospels 00:06:22.67\00:06:25.93 and the entire New Testaments written about 2,000 years ago. 00:06:25.94\00:06:30.38 Not today. And, when we study the Bible, 00:06:30.39\00:06:34.82 they are so called five Ws questions 00:06:34.83\00:06:37.88 that we have to ask ourselves. 00:06:37.89\00:06:40.06 So, if that question begins with W, who wrote? 00:06:40.07\00:06:44.62 To Whom it was written? 00:06:44.63\00:06:47.12 Sometimes, it's important when and where. 00:06:47.13\00:06:49.99 Sometimes, it's not. 00:06:50.00\00:06:51.98 But the last question is the most significant. 00:06:51.99\00:06:54.88 Why was the book written? 00:06:54.89\00:06:58.79 So, let's deal with the first one, who wrote. 00:06:58.80\00:07:01.20 All right, tell us about Matthew? 00:07:01.21\00:07:03.08 See, the early Christian, they named this gospel 00:07:03.09\00:07:07.64 this book to be the Gospel of Matthew. 00:07:07.65\00:07:10.55 It means it was written by a person, 00:07:10.56\00:07:13.06 inspired by the Holy Spirit, moved by the Holy Spirit 00:07:13.07\00:07:16.26 by name of Matthew. 00:07:16.27\00:07:18.44 We don't know too much about him. 00:07:18.45\00:07:21.21 But, when we read the gospel and we'll come to that text, 00:07:21.22\00:07:24.66 Matthew actually was a -- tax collector, and he joined, 00:07:24.67\00:07:29.50 he was invited by Jesus. 00:07:29.51\00:07:31.27 That appeal of Jesus, forgiving voice of Jesus 00:07:31.28\00:07:34.03 made - made such a great impact on him, 00:07:34.04\00:07:36.60 so he decided to follow Jesus, 00:07:36.61\00:07:38.42 and he became the follower of Jesus. 00:07:38.43\00:07:41.07 Something very interesting is, when we open 00:07:41.08\00:07:44.21 Gospel of Matthew he introduces 00:07:44.22\00:07:46.07 himself as Matthew, tax collector. 00:07:46.08\00:07:50.02 But if we go to Mark Chapter 2, 14 to 17, 00:07:50.03\00:07:54.29 we would not read these texts now and Luke 00:07:54.30\00:07:56.57 Chapter 5, 27 to 32, these gospels 00:07:56.58\00:08:01.60 they know him as Levi or Levia. 00:08:01.61\00:08:05.80 So, Levi clearly points to an origin. Yes. 00:08:05.81\00:08:09.23 Why? Because, you see we've the list 00:08:09.24\00:08:12.74 of the twelve disciples. 00:08:12.75\00:08:14.83 In that list, you have Matthew, but in Mark and Luke, 00:08:14.84\00:08:18.21 you don't have Matthew you have Levi, 00:08:18.22\00:08:20.04 and it's always tax collector. 00:08:20.05\00:08:21.83 So, this is the reason we know 00:08:21.84\00:08:23.33 that he had actually two names. 00:08:23.34\00:08:25.25 So, we get a little idea that he has a Jewish background. 00:08:25.26\00:08:27.95 Yes. And this will come into importance 00:08:27.96\00:08:30.15 as we think about his audience. 00:08:30.16\00:08:32.12 By the way we will come 00:08:32.13\00:08:33.64 in the conclusion of today's series. 00:08:33.65\00:08:35.95 And we will see how much he refers to the Old Testament 00:08:35.96\00:08:40.73 just to show that -- Jesus was the fulfillment 00:08:40.74\00:08:43.85 of the Old Testament's prophecies. 00:08:43.86\00:08:45.98 Now, the question is, to whom did he write? 00:08:45.99\00:08:50.21 This is what people are doing their best 00:08:50.22\00:08:53.53 in order to understand, but the suggestion was made 00:08:53.54\00:08:57.32 since he was a Jew, he lived there in Palestine, 00:08:57.33\00:09:01.36 and we know that after the persecution of Christians 00:09:01.37\00:09:04.90 in Jerusalem, many Christians they fled. 00:09:04.91\00:09:07.82 They scattered all around. 00:09:07.83\00:09:09.46 But most of Christians they lived in antichrist area. 00:09:09.47\00:09:13.00 That's why today most Bible students 00:09:13.01\00:09:17.24 they think that the Gospe of Matthew was written 00:09:17.25\00:09:20.51 in anti agency area and for the needs of the church. 00:09:20.54\00:09:26.09 Now, it's very natural for us in ministry 00:09:26.10\00:09:29.82 to wanna reach our own people. Yeah. 00:09:29.83\00:09:32.53 What would be, I'm sure we're gonna explore 00:09:32.54\00:09:35.59 some of the thing, what would be some of the ideas 00:09:35.60\00:09:37.26 that he would need to deal with, he would need to address 00:09:37.27\00:09:40.50 certain objections and concerns in the process. 00:09:40.51\00:09:42.22 So, as we study through this book of Matthew, 00:09:42.23\00:09:45.27 we're going to see that he addresses 00:09:45.28\00:09:47.53 those specific things that helped him. 00:09:47.54\00:09:49.54 You know, one of the obligate things 00:09:49.55\00:09:55.02 when we read the Gospel of Matthew, 00:09:55.03\00:09:57.20 we have always those long debates with the Pharisees. 00:09:57.21\00:10:02.15 And what was always the issue 00:10:02.16\00:10:03.94 about how to observe the law. 00:10:03.95\00:10:07.34 The issue was not should the law be observed or not. 00:10:07.35\00:10:10.52 Unfortunately, many Christians they try 00:10:10.53\00:10:12.69 to read it that way, no. 00:10:12.70\00:10:14.56 I wanna make sure we'd talked that Ranko, 00:10:14.57\00:10:16.45 you said the issue is not to keep the law 00:10:16.46\00:10:18.23 and not the issue is how to keep the law. 00:10:18.24\00:10:19.94 How to keep the law. 00:10:19.95\00:10:21.23 Critical point. So, can you imagine 00:10:21.24\00:10:23.56 when you address your church and most church members 00:10:23.57\00:10:26.86 were Jewish, significant number of them were Pharisees. 00:10:26.87\00:10:32.87 So, when you write that gospel, one more 00:10:32.88\00:10:35.36 time I would like to underline, guided by the Holy Spirit. 00:10:35.37\00:10:39.02 Yes. You want to address the needs of those people 00:10:39.03\00:10:41.89 who are legalist who had become Christians 00:10:41.90\00:10:45.53 but they still live with that mindset 00:10:45.54\00:10:48.83 of their pre-conversion experience and journey, 00:10:48.84\00:10:52.95 and Matthew really puts a strong emphasis on that, 00:10:52.96\00:10:55.79 and when we come to those texts we will see how 00:10:55.80\00:10:59.97 Matthew deal with those issues in his gospel. 00:10:59.98\00:11:04.03 Is there some dimension of structure and so forth, 00:11:04.04\00:11:09.51 was this just dictation from God that he wrote down 00:11:09.52\00:11:12.17 every word or does it - do we see that as a holy man 00:11:12.18\00:11:15.56 of God as scripture says "moved by the Holy Spirit", 00:11:15.57\00:11:17.41 he wrote, God's the author he's the human-writer. 00:11:17.42\00:11:21.36 You know, there's one thing that I learnt about my God 00:11:21.37\00:11:28.10 that He always meets people where they are. 00:11:28.11\00:11:35.51 When we come to Chapter 5 of the Gospel of Matthew 00:11:35.52\00:11:38.75 it will be so obviously, God always meet people, 00:11:38.76\00:11:43.21 and God speaks to the people within their own experience. 00:11:43.22\00:11:50.70 When we study the four gospels, and I'm sorry 00:11:50.71\00:11:54.26 we do not have a time of that but please 00:11:54.27\00:11:55.84 allow me just few moments to reflect on that. 00:11:55.85\00:11:59.19 We have four gospels. 00:11:59.20\00:12:01.55 Matthew evidently wrote to the people who are coming 00:12:01.56\00:12:05.44 from Jewish background. 00:12:05.45\00:12:07.98 So, how would you try to portray Jesus 00:12:07.99\00:12:12.57 to communicate the gospel of Jesus Christ, 00:12:12.58\00:12:15.51 the good news about Jesus Christ, 00:12:15.52\00:12:16.80 I would like to communicate to them 00:12:16.81\00:12:18.59 in the language that they can understand. 00:12:18.60\00:12:20.37 Sure. But the sources and the ideas 00:12:20.38\00:12:22.68 that are important things. Exactly. 00:12:22.69\00:12:24.31 Then, we have the second gospel, is written by Mark. 00:12:24.32\00:12:29.06 Mark lived there in Rome, by the way I would really like 00:12:29.07\00:12:32.35 to stimulate the viewers when they study the Gospel of Mark, 00:12:32.36\00:12:35.20 just to take Chapter 1 and to see how many times 00:12:35.21\00:12:38.95 in the Gospel of Mark the word immediately is used. 00:12:38.96\00:12:42.36 It's used about forty times, 4-0. 00:12:42.37\00:12:46.79 In other three gospels, Matthew, Luke and John, 00:12:46.80\00:12:50.38 that we, I mean, just Matthew has 78 long chapters, 00:12:50.39\00:12:53.66 so Luke 24 long chapters, John 21 long chapters, 00:12:53.67\00:12:58.60 Matthew has 16 short chapters 40 times. 00:12:58.61\00:13:01.89 In other three gospels, the word 'immediately' 00:13:01.90\00:13:04.51 is used 14 times together. 00:13:04.52\00:13:07.28 So, what is dynamic of the gospel is, 00:13:07.29\00:13:09.09 when you write to the Christians in Rome 00:13:09.10\00:13:11.39 who were persecuted, you don't know 00:13:11.40\00:13:13.50 if they will be able to wait the following day. 00:13:13.51\00:13:17.97 I'd never think is immediately in the life of Jewish. 00:13:17.98\00:13:20.24 Luke, you know, the Luke is the only gospel writer 00:13:20.25\00:13:24.03 who was not a Jew, he is a Gentile, 00:13:24.04\00:13:27.79 he writes to the Gentiles and his gospel addresses 00:13:27.80\00:13:32.52 a situation of Gentiles those who are among Jews. 00:13:32.53\00:13:36.64 Four people outcast from the society, women. 00:13:36.65\00:13:43.08 When we read the Gospel of Luke, it's very interesting. 00:13:43.09\00:13:46.62 Only in the Gospel of Luke, we've the parable 00:13:46.63\00:13:49.04 of the Good Samaritan, Richman and Lazarus, 00:13:49.05\00:13:54.41 the conversion of Zaccheus. 00:13:54.42\00:13:57.44 All those things. 00:13:57.45\00:13:58.57 The Prodigal Son, the Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin 00:13:58.58\00:14:03.51 are found in the Gospel of Luke Chapter 15. 00:14:03.52\00:14:07.12 Just one moment is, when we - they are on the cross, 00:14:07.13\00:14:09.85 when you read Matthew, Mark and John, 00:14:09.86\00:14:13.50 two criminals were crucified with Jesus on the cross, 00:14:13.51\00:14:16.69 but suddenly one of those two criminals repents 00:14:16.70\00:14:19.61 and Jesus promised to him one day 00:14:19.62\00:14:21.89 to be with Jesus in paradise. 00:14:21.90\00:14:22.91 So its only in Luke, but John wrote 00:14:22.92\00:14:24.82 to the second generation of Christians. 00:14:24.83\00:14:26.73 So, you see the flavor of that, it's - 00:14:26.74\00:14:28.41 It's a beautiful prospective, Ranko. 00:14:28.42\00:14:31.48 We're gonna take a break in just a moment, 00:14:31.49\00:14:33.30 but I want our listeners to think about 00:14:33.31\00:14:35.19 what you just said that God cared so much 00:14:35.20\00:14:38.42 that He wants us each to know Christ 00:14:38.43\00:14:40.60 in a way that you can understand Him. 00:14:40.63\00:14:42.41 It shows the great magnanimity of God. 00:14:42.42\00:14:44.50 He speaks to us in the way that we can understand it. 00:14:44.51\00:14:48.41 Look tremendous. We're gonna take a break, 00:14:48.42\00:14:49.88 I will be right back. Thanks for joining us. 00:14:49.89\00:14:52.04
