Welcome, to the "Books of the Books," series. 00:00:21.15\00:00:23.92 You're on 3ABN. 00:00:23.95\00:00:25.32 We're exploring the gospel of Mathew, 00:00:25.35\00:00:28.02 inspired by the Holy Spirit, written for our benefit. 00:00:28.06\00:00:32.03 As we spent time in this word, we're just drawn to the savior 00:00:32.06\00:00:36.63 who is painted and portrayed 00:00:36.67\00:00:38.50 in such beautiful word pictures here, gospel of Mathew. 00:00:38.53\00:00:42.04 I would like to welcome back Dr. Ranko Stefanovic. 00:00:42.07\00:00:45.51 Ranko, as a professor of New Testament, 00:00:45.54\00:00:48.74 all scripture is inspired by God 00:00:48.78\00:00:51.51 but there are certain books that draw you 00:00:51.55\00:00:52.98 and there're certain things about certain books. 00:00:53.01\00:00:55.72 What is it about the gospel of Mathew 00:00:55.75\00:00:57.42 that especially appeals to you? 00:00:57.45\00:00:59.12 We already stated that the gospel of Mathew 00:00:59.15\00:01:01.79 is the gospel for the Church. 00:01:01.82\00:01:04.66 Telling us how Christians should live 00:01:04.69\00:01:08.13 and behave in the church. 00:01:08.16\00:01:10.23 That's just the main point. 00:01:10.27\00:01:11.83 What a wonderful portrait we have here. 00:01:11.87\00:01:14.77 Let's ask God to guide us as we continue on. 00:01:14.80\00:01:18.51 Lord as we study now we need you 00:01:18.54\00:01:22.11 to open our eyes and to open our hearts. 00:01:22.14\00:01:25.41 We want not just to be informed, Lord, 00:01:25.45\00:01:27.82 but also inspired to follow you more clearly, 00:01:27.85\00:01:31.19 more closely, more dearly. 00:01:31.22\00:01:33.42 So, Lord, please come and teach us, 00:01:33.46\00:01:35.82 through your spirit, we pray. 00:01:35.86\00:01:37.29 In Jesus' name, Amen. Amen. 00:01:37.33\00:01:39.69 As we've been following the path of Jesus. 00:01:39.73\00:01:44.10 A path that took him from birth through baptism, 00:01:44.13\00:01:47.74 through temptations, through ministry 00:01:47.77\00:01:50.54 in Galilee of teaching and working miracles 00:01:50.57\00:01:54.01 and healings--now, we find his steps have turned. 00:01:54.04\00:01:57.48 They're headed towards Jerusalem. 00:01:57.51\00:01:58.98 He is in Jerusalem now, He's had a triumphal entry 00:01:59.01\00:02:02.65 and the opposition has been at every side. 00:02:02.68\00:02:08.52 Everywhere he turns they're looking to catch him. 00:02:08.56\00:02:11.09 They're looking to trap him as we saw from the test. 00:02:11.13\00:02:14.86 As we come to Chapter 23 this time and 24, 00:02:14.93\00:02:18.70 Ranko, what's ahead for us? 00:02:18.73\00:02:20.30 Yeah, Chapter 23 is actually the climax. 00:02:20.34\00:02:26.94 Upto this point Jesus is always kind toward Pharisees. 00:02:26.98\00:02:31.75 He tried to answer them 00:02:31.78\00:02:33.18 but they're sinking deeper and deeper. 00:02:33.21\00:02:37.39 The animosity against Jesus. 00:02:37.42\00:02:41.26 Evidently there was nothing more to be done. 00:02:41.29\00:02:44.46 But let me tell you 00:02:44.49\00:02:45.83 that patience of Jesus was not in vain. 00:02:45.86\00:02:49.60 Some of these Pharisees, that they were Pentecost 00:02:49.63\00:02:53.44 as we read the Book of Acts, 00:02:53.47\00:02:55.14 they really responded the call of Holy Spirit. 00:02:55.17\00:02:58.71 When Peter preached that famous sermon 00:02:58.74\00:03:01.74 and they became Christians. 00:03:01.78\00:03:03.55 So we have encouragement to never give up on people. 00:03:03.58\00:03:07.48 Jesus never gave up but Jesus finally 00:03:07.52\00:03:10.15 had to make the public statement 00:03:10.19\00:03:11.59 about those Pharisees who really persisted 00:03:11.62\00:03:15.32 in the unbelief and the rejection of Jesus. 00:03:15.36\00:03:19.19 Actually they were those Pharisees 00:03:19.23\00:03:20.96 who until the very end 00:03:21.00\00:03:22.46 actually even brought Jesus to the cross. 00:03:22.50\00:03:24.77 Yes, yes and-- 00:03:24.80\00:03:26.43 It's not about all the Pharisees. 00:03:26.47\00:03:28.27 Many Pharisees, as we make statement, 00:03:28.30\00:03:31.27 became Christians later but significant number of them 00:03:31.31\00:03:34.84 together usually should- leaders, 00:03:34.88\00:03:37.05 they persisted and it was the time 00:03:37.08\00:03:39.71 for Jesus finally to expose them. 00:03:39.75\00:03:42.22 We must remember that 00:03:42.25\00:03:43.62 this is the close of his Earthly ministry. 00:03:43.65\00:03:46.52 And when He was crucified and raise 00:03:46.55\00:03:51.06 and will then soon ascend, people will be left wondering, 00:03:51.09\00:03:55.10 which is the correct path? Who really knows God? 00:03:55.13\00:03:59.57 Who is telling us about God? Is it Jesus? 00:03:59.60\00:04:03.37 Or is it what the Pharisees and the leaders have told? 00:04:03.41\00:04:05.71 So He's got to make it very clear to the public, 00:04:05.74\00:04:08.38 to the crowds, what is the true path. 00:04:08.41\00:04:11.78 And it's a strong message here. 00:04:11.81\00:04:14.75 Now Ranko, you're invited to go and speak many places. 00:04:14.78\00:04:17.62 I doubt if you've ever use this as your opening sermon. 00:04:17.65\00:04:20.49 No. It's a tough message. 00:04:20.52\00:04:22.99 Let's try to get little bit of the flavor 00:04:23.02\00:04:25.09 But I would like to remind us what we read 00:04:25.13\00:04:27.76 in the "Desire of Ages." Can you say? 00:04:27.76\00:04:30.17 Yes, certainly we want to remember 00:04:30.20\00:04:32.57 that Jesus spoke even these woes. 00:04:32.60\00:04:35.20 We call this chapter the woes in love. 00:04:35.24\00:04:38.14 There was tears in His voice as He's reaching out. 00:04:38.17\00:04:40.84 But let's listen to the words. 00:04:40.88\00:04:43.38 You know, many times we think 00:04:43.41\00:04:45.05 about winning friends and influencing people. 00:04:45.08\00:04:47.85 There's a books even on the subject and so forth. 00:04:47.88\00:04:49.95 This is not a sermon to preach 00:04:49.98\00:04:52.05 for the first time you're dealing with people. 00:04:52.09\00:04:54.42 This is the last call. 00:04:54.46\00:04:56.69 This is a time when you've got lay it all down 00:04:56.73\00:05:00.06 and say okay folks these are the issues, 00:05:00.10\00:05:02.26 now you've got to make a decision. 00:05:02.30\00:05:03.83 Glenn, we don't have even something close 00:05:03.87\00:05:06.87 to this at the beginning of Jesus ministry 00:05:06.90\00:05:09.20 No. Do you remember 00:05:09.24\00:05:10.57 even when we were in Chapter 12? 00:05:10.61\00:05:12.07 When the Pharisees they made that statement, 00:05:12.11\00:05:14.64 a blasphemy, against the Holy Spirit. 00:05:14.68\00:05:17.48 When Jesus talked about unpardonable sin 00:05:17.51\00:05:22.32 we never have any condemnation 00:05:22.35\00:05:24.42 from Jesus nothing, nothing even close. 00:05:24.45\00:05:27.46 But this is really the climax. 00:05:27.49\00:05:30.73 Let's get a little bit of the flavor. 00:05:30.76\00:05:32.96 We won't read all of this but I like to read a selection 00:05:32.99\00:05:36.13 so you can catch some of the thrust 00:05:36.16\00:05:40.37 some of the energy of this passage. 00:05:40.40\00:05:42.34 "Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, 00:05:42.37\00:05:44.77 'the scribes and Pharisees sit on Moses' seat. 00:05:44.81\00:05:47.61 So you practice and observe whatever they tell you. 00:05:47.64\00:05:50.35 But don't do what they do, 00:05:50.38\00:05:52.08 for they preach but do not practice.'" 00:05:52.11\00:05:54.48 We should pause right there, many times we think 00:05:54.52\00:05:57.15 that everything the Pharisees taught was wrong. No. 00:05:57.19\00:05:59.42 No. Jesus agrees with many of those teachings. 00:05:59.45\00:06:02.59 Much of what they thought was good. 00:06:02.62\00:06:04.56 But He says something about the way they're living. 00:06:04.59\00:06:07.30 Jesus actually calls them hypocrites. 00:06:07.36\00:06:10.03 We will go to verse 20-- 13, verse 27. 00:06:10.07\00:06:14.40 Actually 13, 15 where else? 27, how many times? 00:06:14.44\00:06:18.37 23, 25, 27, 29, how many times 00:06:18.41\00:06:24.81 Jesus used the word hypocrite. 00:06:24.85\00:06:27.65 Actually hypocrite was the word, 00:06:27.68\00:06:29.02 in the 1st century among Ancient Greeks, for actors. 00:06:29.05\00:06:32.35 Who in normal life they were one thing 00:06:32.39\00:06:35.02 when they were before people acting, 00:06:35.06\00:06:36.96 they were completely different things. 00:06:36.99\00:06:38.79 This is actually what the Pharisees were doing. 00:06:38.83\00:06:40.83 They were teaching many right things, 00:06:40.86\00:06:43.93 but there behavior was much louder 00:06:43.97\00:06:47.17 than what they were talking. 00:06:47.20\00:06:49.57 So they're wearing a mask. 00:06:49.60\00:06:50.94 They're pretending to be what they aren't. 00:06:50.97\00:06:52.31 And in honesty we would have to pause 00:06:52.34\00:06:54.31 and say there's a little bit of hypocrisy, 00:06:54.34\00:06:56.18 may be more than that, in each of us. 00:06:56.21\00:06:57.85 Oh, yeah. 00:06:57.88\00:06:59.21 We seldom show people our real true character 00:06:59.25\00:07:02.32 and Jesus takes off the masks here. 00:07:02.35\00:07:05.42 "They preach but they do practice. 00:07:05.45\00:07:08.16 They bind heavy burdens hard to bear, 00:07:08.19\00:07:10.06 lay them on men's shoulders. 00:07:10.09\00:07:11.56 They themselves will not move them with a finger." 00:07:11.59\00:07:14.36 So, the compassion of Christ is here. 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.97 He is speaking about the compassionless leadership 00:07:17.00\00:07:20.60 at that time. Verse 13, 00:07:20.64\00:07:23.27 "But woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! 00:07:23.30\00:07:25.57 You shut the kingdom of heaven against men. 00:07:25.61\00:07:28.04 For you neither enter yourselves 00:07:28.08\00:07:30.55 nor allow those who would enter to go in. 00:07:30.58\00:07:33.01 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, 00:07:33.05\00:07:36.99 for you traverse sea and land to make a single proselyte, 00:07:37.02\00:07:40.92 and when he becomes a proselyte or a convert 00:07:40.96\00:07:43.73 you make him twice as much a child of Hell as you are." 00:07:43.76\00:07:46.80 Ranko, these are hard statements. 00:07:46.83\00:07:48.83 You know, I teach a antibiotics class 00:07:48.86\00:07:50.73 and every once in a while I'll assign a student 00:07:50.77\00:07:53.00 to preach on this passage. 00:07:53.03\00:07:54.37 They have a hard time because this doesn't sound like 00:07:54.40\00:07:57.94 Jesus meek and mild. 00:07:57.97\00:07:59.31 This doesn't sound like the sweet and loving Jesus. 00:07:59.34\00:08:02.44 It seems harsh to say 00:08:02.48\00:08:04.18 "you make someone twice the son of hell as you are," 00:08:04.21\00:08:06.82 I don't think most preachers walk into the pulpit 00:08:06.85\00:08:09.45 and say something like that. We have to find out why? 00:08:09.48\00:08:11.65 "Woe to you blind guides" Verse 23, 00:08:11.69\00:08:15.36 "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" 00:08:15.39\00:08:18.59 Actually 23, is really-- 00:08:18.63\00:08:21.00 Let's look at that one little further. 00:08:21.03\00:08:22.90 It's somehow in nutshell 00:08:22.93\00:08:25.10 everything what Jesus said in verse 23. 00:08:25.13\00:08:27.60 "For you tithe, mint, and dill and cumin, 00:08:27.64\00:08:31.07 and you've neglected the weightier matters 00:08:31.11\00:08:32.94 of the law, justice and mercy and faith." 00:08:32.97\00:08:35.84 What's the weightier matters? What's the deeper things? 00:08:35.88\00:08:40.25 Care about people. It's that horizontal relation. 00:08:40.28\00:08:43.59 That's what we are talking. That's the main thread in-- 00:08:43.62\00:08:47.16 He's not saying it's wrong to tithe. 00:08:47.19\00:08:48.62 He is not saying it's wrong to do any of those things. 00:08:48.66\00:08:50.66 But if we do those really just actions 00:08:50.69\00:08:52.83 and we forget our relationship with one and another. 00:08:52.86\00:08:56.43 You see the observance of the law, 00:08:56.46\00:08:58.73 paying tithe and everything, is not a substitute 00:08:58.77\00:09:03.34 for the way how we treat the people. 00:09:03.37\00:09:05.44 You've said a lot right there. 00:09:05.47\00:09:07.24 Verse 25, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! 00:09:07.28\00:09:11.08 You cleanse outside of the cup and of the plate, 00:09:11.11\00:09:14.48 but inside they are full of extortion and rapacity." 00:09:14.52\00:09:18.19 So everything is up to the end of the chapter about-- 00:09:18.22\00:09:20.49 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, 00:09:20.52\00:09:22.42 white-washed tombs. 00:09:22.46\00:09:23.93 You're like dead men's bones. 00:09:23.96\00:09:25.63 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! 00:09:25.66\00:09:28.70 Truly I say to you all this 00:09:28.73\00:09:31.10 will come upon this generation." 00:09:31.13\00:09:32.67 But he concludes, we have to go to verses 37 00:09:32.70\00:09:36.50 This text now is very important. 00:09:36.54\00:09:37.91 Yes it's very precious. 00:09:37.94\00:09:39.27 Glenn, can you, can you read it. 00:09:39.31\00:09:40.64 "Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets, 00:09:40.68\00:09:43.51 stoning those who were sent to you. 00:09:43.55\00:09:45.48 "We should pause and think about Jesus' tone. 00:09:45.51\00:09:49.28 What was in His eyes? What was in his heart? 00:09:49.32\00:09:51.42 Ranko He was trying to wake people up. 00:09:51.45\00:09:53.29 If you're home was on fire 00:09:53.32\00:09:55.36 and you're fast asleep in the middle of night. 00:09:55.39\00:09:57.66 You don't want me just knocking on the door quietly. 00:09:57.69\00:10:01.26 You want me to shout. You want me to cry. 00:10:01.30\00:10:03.33 Whatever it takes to wake you up and say. 00:10:03.37\00:10:05.47 Your building is collapsing. 00:10:05.50\00:10:07.77 And their system was about to come down. 00:10:07.80\00:10:10.37 Actually what Jesus tried to say, "I tried to help you? 00:10:10.41\00:10:13.54 I did everything. You did not accept it. 00:10:13.58\00:10:16.48 Now the consequences will come to that." 00:10:16.51\00:10:19.05 And actually this is the introduction 00:10:19.08\00:10:20.58 to our next subject that we would will like to go. 00:10:20.62\00:10:22.72 I want those of you, who are listening, 00:10:22.75\00:10:24.52 to hear Jesus' words and His heart. 00:10:24.55\00:10:28.39 I believe sometimes the most difficult love 00:10:28.42\00:10:31.93 is the love of letting go. 00:10:31.96\00:10:33.90 You may have had a situation, relationship in your life. 00:10:33.93\00:10:36.40 A son, a loved one. You tried to reach them. 00:10:36.43\00:10:40.57 You tried to reach them and eventually 00:10:40.60\00:10:42.50 you had to honor their choice. 00:10:42.54\00:10:44.57 God does the same thing. He honors our choice. 00:10:44.61\00:10:46.98 And yet Jesus' heart is broken. 00:10:47.01\00:10:48.88 "O Jerusalem, killing the prophets, 00:10:48.91\00:10:51.08 stoning those who were sent to you, 00:10:51.11\00:10:52.65 how often I would have gathered your children together, 00:10:52.68\00:10:55.62 as a hen gathers her broods 00:10:55.65\00:10:57.12 under her wing and you would not. 00:10:57.15\00:10:59.22 Behold your house is forsaken and desolate." 00:10:59.25\00:11:03.69 This is his last public declaration 00:11:03.73\00:11:05.59 here for the crowds. "For I tell you, 00:11:05.63\00:11:07.96 you will not see me again. 00:11:07.96\00:11:09.73 Until you say blessed is he 00:11:09.76\00:11:11.67 who comes in name in Lord." 00:11:11.70\00:11:13.30 So, Glenn, let us try to see what we have here. 00:11:13.34\00:11:18.44 The disciples are there and they're listening 00:11:18.47\00:11:21.61 to what Jesus is to saying, "I tried Jerusalem, 00:11:21.64\00:11:26.61 everything to do in order to do bring you myself." 00:11:26.65\00:11:30.32 I mean and he's using even this metaphor 00:11:30.35\00:11:33.82 of a hen and chicken. 00:11:33.86\00:11:35.79 "And I do, I try to do everything 00:11:35.82\00:11:37.69 to put you under the wings of my protection. 00:11:37.73\00:11:41.13 Therefore your house," which is evidently the temple, 00:11:41.16\00:11:45.17 "will be left to you desolate." 00:11:45.20\00:11:48.37 The disciples are listening there 00:11:48.40\00:11:50.34 We have to understand 00:11:50.37\00:11:51.91 something very, very important. 00:11:51.94\00:11:54.78 That the Jewish people were very much familiar 00:11:54.81\00:11:59.28 with the Old Testament promises. 00:11:59.31\00:12:01.52 Let's keep in mind that in the gospel of Mathew 00:12:01.55\00:12:04.95 everything that the Jesus does is the fulfillment 00:12:04.99\00:12:08.62 of the Old Testament prophecies. Mathew wrote it. 00:12:08.66\00:12:11.23 So Mathew was so much in the-- 00:12:11.26\00:12:13.50 and they were listening to what Jesus said. 00:12:13.53\00:12:15.23 According to those Old Testament prophecy, 00:12:15.26\00:12:19.20 one day God will bless Israel and Palestine, 00:12:19.23\00:12:25.84 Jerusalem will be established. 00:12:25.87\00:12:28.81 Okay, the Messiah would come 00:12:28.84\00:12:32.25 establish his kingdom and Jerusalem, 00:12:32.28\00:12:36.65 with its temple will become the centre of the World. 00:12:36.69\00:12:42.39 By the way there are numerous Old Testament passages 00:12:42.42\00:12:46.13 that talks about the centrality of Jerusalem 00:12:46.16\00:12:49.30 with its temple in the future Messianic Kingdom. 00:12:49.33\00:12:53.00 There are maps, you had Jerusalem at the side. 00:12:53.03\00:12:55.47 Actually no temple- 00:12:55.50\00:13:03.45 it's the end of the world. 00:13:03.48\00:13:04.88 Without the temple, no temple no Messianic Kingdom. 00:13:04.91\00:13:07.62 The end of the temple is the end of the world. 00:13:07.65\00:13:13.19 the disciples are listening to what Jesus is saying. 00:13:13.22\00:13:16.79 But you know you listen something you don't want 00:13:16.83\00:13:19.43 suddenly to interrupt Jesus and ask questions. 00:13:19.46\00:13:22.93 But then they were leaving Jerusalem-- 00:13:22.96\00:13:24.73 by the way, this was Jesus' last time in the temple. 00:13:24.77\00:13:30.07 Jesus is leaving. As they were leaving the temple 00:13:30.11\00:13:32.71 we still have that original stairways there in Jerusalem. 00:13:32.74\00:13:35.68 They were coming out going through the door. 00:13:35.71\00:13:38.38 But disciples they wanted to have a kind 00:13:38.41\00:13:41.42 to start conversation with Jesus. 00:13:41.45\00:13:43.22 To ask him what he mean 00:13:43.25\00:13:44.59 "your house will be left to desolate?" 00:13:44.62\00:13:46.59 And I would like just to take some moments 00:13:46.62\00:13:48.69 to read the first three verses because this is very important 00:13:48.72\00:13:51.56 to understand for what is coming after that. 00:13:51.59\00:13:54.73 And just before we read I want to make sure 00:13:54.76\00:13:56.30 we understand Jesus did not give up. 00:13:56.33\00:13:58.53 Because he still went to the cross. 00:13:58.57\00:14:01.04 For those very Pharisees. 00:14:01.07\00:14:02.60 For those very people who were not responding 00:14:02.64\00:14:04.71 at that time, many did respond later. 00:14:04.74\00:14:07.18 Mathew 24 verse 1, "Jesus left the temple 00:14:07.21\00:14:10.75 and He is going away, when his disciples came 00:14:10.78\00:14:12.75 to point out to Him the buildings of the temple. 00:14:12.78\00:14:15.35 But he answered them, 'You see all these do you not. 00:14:15.38\00:14:19.35 Truly I said you there were not be left here 00:14:19.39\00:14:22.79 one stone upon another that will not be not be thrown.'" 00:14:22.82\00:14:25.89 What a shock it must have been. 00:14:25.93\00:14:27.66 And the verse 3, "As He sat upon the Mount of Olives, 00:14:27.66\00:14:31.03 the disciples came to him privately and saying, 00:14:31.07\00:14:33.13 'Tell us when will this be. And what will be the signs 00:14:33.17\00:14:36.50 of your coming and of the close of the age.'" 00:14:36.54\00:14:39.37 Let's deal with this text after the break. 00:14:39.41\00:14:41.38 All right, Ranko, it's so good to explore this. 00:14:41.41\00:14:45.05 You've stirred up some questions. 00:14:45.08\00:14:46.41 We're gonna come right back after our break 00:14:46.45\00:14:48.05 to go into one of these most powerful chapters, Mathew 24. 00:14:48.08\00:14:51.52 You won't want to miss this, we'll be right back. 00:14:51.55\00:14:53.82
