Welcome back, we're exploring the two great commandments 00:00:01.33\00:00:04.43 that Jesus explains 00:00:04.47\00:00:06.94 and declaresin Matthew, Chapter 22. 00:00:06.97\00:00:10.77 Ranko, you've, you've helped us understand a little bit 00:00:10.81\00:00:13.74 but I sense some more here. 00:00:13.78\00:00:15.18 And I also sense this is personal. 00:00:15.21\00:00:17.81 Yeah, Glenn, I hope that the viewers will notice 00:00:17.85\00:00:22.12 that I'm very charismatic about this 00:00:22.15\00:00:26.52 in talking bout this passage 00:00:26.55\00:00:28.22 because when I talk about my previous life, 00:00:28.26\00:00:32.33 um, I had hard time in loving people 00:00:32.36\00:00:36.73 and relating to people and actually, 00:00:36.77\00:00:39.30 God used this passage to change my own life. 00:00:39.33\00:00:44.31 That's why this passage is so much important to me 00:00:44.34\00:00:48.68 and I would like share 00:00:48.71\00:00:50.05 actually in dealing with this text I want to share 00:00:50.08\00:00:53.21 with the viewers how God changed my own life. 00:00:53.25\00:00:55.72 Glenn, you know, when we talked to department 00:00:55.75\00:00:57.89 usually I'm perceived by students to be a loving teacher 00:00:57.92\00:01:00.66 Actually, it happened about thirty years ago 00:01:00.69\00:01:03.56 they would not have such opinion about me. 00:01:03.59\00:01:05.66 I believe that God can change everybody, 00:01:05.69\00:01:08.43 God changed me 00:01:08.46\00:01:09.86 and dear viewers, I just want to tell you 00:01:09.90\00:01:12.17 if God was able to change me God can also change you. 00:01:12.20\00:01:17.11 All right, so we've explored the fact 00:01:17.14\00:01:19.11 that these two commandments are very much connected. 00:01:19.14\00:01:22.11 So Glenn, the first commandment, 00:01:22.14\00:01:24.35 I don't want now to talk too much about others, 00:01:24.38\00:01:27.48 because evidently Christians, 00:01:27.52\00:01:29.65 they try to have that right relationships with God 00:01:29.68\00:01:32.95 they're struggling, but we can notice 00:01:32.99\00:01:35.56 and I believe that the viewers will agree with me 00:01:35.59\00:01:37.96 that the problem that we have in our lives is how generally 00:01:37.99\00:01:43.57 to relate to other people. 00:01:43.60\00:01:45.27 These are struggles of all us. 00:01:45.30\00:01:46.90 How can I love my enemy? 00:01:46.94\00:01:48.64 How can I do the people 00:01:48.67\00:01:50.07 when they don't treat me justly etcetera? 00:01:50.11\00:01:52.37 How to practice it? 00:01:52.41\00:01:53.74 So let's try to see what we have in the text. 00:01:53.78\00:01:55.74 Ranko, you're implying that we even though we're convert, 00:01:55.78\00:01:59.18 even though we're baptized there're still some struggles. 00:01:59.21\00:02:01.98 There are strugglers 00:02:02.02\00:02:03.35 and genuine Christians are struggling with this. 00:02:03.39\00:02:05.55 Wherever I go people are asking me 00:02:05.59\00:02:07.22 many, many questions about how to apply, 00:02:07.26\00:02:10.13 how to put in-- 00:02:10.16\00:02:11.49 Scripture's realistic here. 00:02:11.53\00:02:12.86 Yes, so Glenn, let's go to the second commandment, 00:02:12.89\00:02:15.23 "you shall love your neighbor as yourself." 00:02:15.26\00:02:17.50 By the way if we go to the book, 00:02:17.53\00:02:19.47 to the, to James, 00:02:19.50\00:02:22.90 James, Chapter 2, verse 8. 00:02:22.94\00:02:25.21 He calls, "you shall love your neighbor as yourself, 00:02:25.24\00:02:27.74 as the royal commandment." 00:02:27.78\00:02:29.48 By the way, do you know, that several times 00:02:29.51\00:02:33.11 in the New Testament this royal commandment, 00:02:33.15\00:02:35.88 "you shall love your neighbor as yourself" 00:02:35.92\00:02:37.39 is repeated in New Testament. 00:02:37.42\00:02:38.79 Never the first four, only this. 00:02:38.82\00:02:41.36 Evidently this is what people are struggling about. 00:02:41.39\00:02:43.79 So let's go to that. 00:02:43.83\00:02:45.16 Glenn, you need now to help me. 00:02:45.19\00:02:47.23 You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 00:02:47.30\00:02:50.73 How many parts do you have in this commandment? 00:02:50.77\00:02:54.24 I don't want to put you on the spot. 00:02:54.27\00:02:55.60 It's 3 parts. 00:02:55.64\00:02:57.04 Which are the 3 parts? 00:02:57.07\00:02:58.41 The first part is the imperative. 00:02:58.44\00:03:00.58 I don't like to use the expression, command. 00:03:00.61\00:03:03.14 This is not command, imperative, you shall love. 00:03:03.18\00:03:06.61 The next one, the question is, 00:03:06.65\00:03:09.05 whom, whom shall I love? 00:03:09.08\00:03:11.49 The answer is, your neighbor 00:03:11.52\00:03:14.19 and the third part is how shall I love? 00:03:14.22\00:03:17.63 And the answer is, as you love yourself, 00:03:17.66\00:03:22.70 and I know that many aspects of this, 00:03:22.73\00:03:26.74 what we just presented, is misunderstood. 00:03:26.77\00:03:28.77 So let's go piece by piece. 00:03:28.80\00:03:30.87 The first one is, you shall love. 00:03:30.91\00:03:35.58 You see, the word you shall love, 00:03:35.61\00:03:39.05 that Jesus employed here 00:03:39.08\00:03:40.78 is found here in the gospel of Matthew. 00:03:40.82\00:03:42.85 It's actually the word agapao, 00:03:42.88\00:03:45.35 from which the word agape comes. 00:03:45.39\00:03:47.29 This word is, refers to the love 00:03:47.32\00:03:50.29 which is actually of divine origin, 00:03:50.33\00:03:54.40 unknown to ancient Greeks. 00:03:54.46\00:03:56.43 It's specifically the biblical concept, 00:03:56.46\00:04:00.47 you see that love, agape love, 00:04:00.50\00:04:03.07 that only God possesses. 00:04:03.10\00:04:04.91 We're not born with that love, 00:04:04.94\00:04:06.41 it's actually imparted to us as a,as a gift from God. 00:04:06.44\00:04:10.81 Okay these-- 00:04:10.85\00:04:12.18 Ranko, if I, if I might just intrude here for a moment. 00:04:12.21\00:04:14.92 Please, please. 00:04:14.95\00:04:16.28 I think many times people feel that love is a feeling. 00:04:16.32\00:04:19.25 But I don't feel like loving them. 00:04:19.29\00:04:20.92 This is not about, about feeling, 00:04:20.96\00:04:23.32 you see, this is the gift from God. 00:04:23.36\00:04:24.93 This love is all inclusive. 00:04:24.96\00:04:28.23 You remember when we talked in the Sermon 00:04:28.26\00:04:30.70 on the Mount is we have to love all people as God, 00:04:30.73\00:04:34.64 thus we have to be perfect as God. 00:04:34.67\00:04:36.30 Because He gives His rain, 00:04:36.34\00:04:38.04 He gives His sun to both good and evil. 00:04:38.07\00:04:40.44 It includes all people. 00:04:40.48\00:04:41.88 Number one, it's all inclusive. 00:04:41.91\00:04:43.68 Second, it's unconditional. 00:04:43.71\00:04:47.08 I love this love agape not because people love me 00:04:47.12\00:04:54.86 but so many times despite the fact they love me. 00:04:54.89\00:04:58.19 When I was a young person an idea came to my mind. 00:04:58.23\00:05:03.13 I heard something very similar and it brought me to think. 00:05:03.16\00:05:05.93 This love is like a rose, flower, okay, a rose. 00:05:05.97\00:05:10.51 You know, you take rose from the bush, 00:05:10.54\00:05:12.51 you put to your nostrils, 00:05:12.54\00:05:14.41 boy, such a very nice aroma. 00:05:14.44\00:05:17.11 Then you take that rose, put it down on the ground, 00:05:17.15\00:05:20.32 you trample, put in the dust, do what ever you want. 00:05:20.35\00:05:23.32 Take that rose, put back to your nostrils, 00:05:23.35\00:05:26.82 it's still the same aroma. 00:05:26.86\00:05:28.62 This is what this love is all about. 00:05:28.66\00:05:31.03 This is what Jesus did. 00:05:31.06\00:05:32.73 He loved His disciples whether they were good 00:05:32.76\00:05:35.96 or sometimes they struggle with issues. 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.07 He loved even Jerusalem that rejected Him. 00:05:38.10\00:05:41.24 He cried over Jerusalem, even on the cross 00:05:41.27\00:05:43.67 when He was being crucified. 00:05:43.71\00:05:45.17 "Father, forgive them 00:05:45.21\00:05:46.54 because they don't know what they do." 00:05:46.57\00:05:48.01 This is the first one. 00:05:48.04\00:05:49.44 But the second one also provide clarification to the first one. 00:05:49.48\00:05:53.38 Who are those that we are to love? 00:05:53.42\00:05:58.39 You shall love it. 00:05:58.42\00:05:59.75 The answer is, your neighbor. 00:05:59.79\00:06:02.66 Actually, the Greek word Plesion, 00:06:02.69\00:06:05.73 that is used, let me translate in English 00:06:05.76\00:06:08.13 as the word neighbor is a correct translation. 00:06:08.16\00:06:11.40 In my language the word, believes me, means neighbor. 00:06:11.43\00:06:15.54 But what is the meaning of the word neighbor, Glenn? 00:06:15.57\00:06:18.01 It's old English. 00:06:18.04\00:06:20.68 What is the meaning of neig--neighhbor? 00:06:20.71\00:06:23.65 We usually think of the one who's near by. 00:06:23.68\00:06:25.11 Somebody who's... 00:06:25.15\00:06:26.48 This is exactly what Jesus taught. 00:06:26.51\00:06:28.68 You see, it's very easy to me to stand here 00:06:28.72\00:06:31.62 in front of camera and say to our viewers, 00:06:31.65\00:06:34.52 I love you. 00:06:34.56\00:06:36.69 It's very easy to love people who are faraway from me, 00:06:36.73\00:06:40.33 I don't know them. 00:06:40.36\00:06:43.20 And so many times I hear stories about the mission field 00:06:43.23\00:06:47.84 People are hungry, people are suffering. 00:06:47.87\00:06:49.50 can be so, you know, 00:06:49.54\00:06:51.84 caught with my emotions and take my wallet 00:06:51.87\00:06:54.81 and take money to send to the mission field. 00:06:54.84\00:06:56.58 But when I'm here in the classroom, 00:06:56.61\00:06:58.21 when I see my neighbor, 00:06:58.25\00:07:00.28 the student who's there in there 00:07:00.32\00:07:01.95 who's suffering financially, then I calculate, 00:07:01.98\00:07:04.79 he doesn't know to deal with the money, etcetera. 00:07:04.82\00:07:07.09 its much easier in our lives to love people who are faraway 00:07:07.12\00:07:11.89 than those who are our neighbors. 00:07:11.93\00:07:14.60 Glenn, who's your first neighbor? 00:07:14.63\00:07:18.23 Right in your own home. 00:07:18.27\00:07:19.60 Your wife, next one, children. 00:07:19.63\00:07:21.67 Do you know that it is the most difficult thing 00:07:21.70\00:07:24.37 to love my wife and my children? 00:07:24.41\00:07:26.94 And it might be sometimes difficult for them to love us. 00:07:26.98\00:07:30.18 When we go to restaurant 00:07:30.21\00:07:31.81 and how easy to offer the chair 00:07:31.85\00:07:35.25 to another person, etcetera, 00:07:35.28\00:07:37.19 but when my wife comes, how do I treat her? 00:07:37.22\00:07:39.92 I remember so many times and I know that God forgave me. 00:07:39.95\00:07:43.99 I try, I was always patience 00:07:44.03\00:07:46.83 with young people, trying to help them. 00:07:46.86\00:07:48.70 When they ask me question 00:07:48.73\00:07:50.07 I will sit, let me explain to you 00:07:50.10\00:07:51.43 and then I come home, I'm tired 00:07:51.47\00:07:52.80 and my own children ask me something question, 00:07:52.83\00:07:55.30 please leave me alone, I'm tired. 00:07:55.34\00:07:57.11 You know, who's next my neighbor? 00:08:01.48\00:08:03.65 My neighbor, next house they are. 00:08:03.68\00:08:05.28 I'm coming from the part of the world 00:08:05.31\00:08:07.45 where neighbors are always fighting against each other. 00:08:07.48\00:08:09.65 She can came to my side, you know. 00:08:09.68\00:08:11.92 Who's next of my neighbor? 00:08:11.95\00:08:15.52 The people that are working there. 00:08:15.56\00:08:17.06 When you come for the first time 00:08:17.09\00:08:18.99 to your office, everybody is nice. 00:08:19.03\00:08:21.30 You love everybody, 00:08:21.33\00:08:22.66 but when you become familiar with people, 00:08:22.70\00:08:24.90 when they're close to them, 00:08:24.93\00:08:26.27 when they're really your neighbors. 00:08:26.30\00:08:27.64 That's the test. 00:08:27.67\00:08:29.00 This is the test of my love. 00:08:29.04\00:08:30.97 I know, my wife watch me preaching about this 00:08:31.01\00:08:34.61 and then I would, I would sit in my car 00:08:34.64\00:08:37.65 there in PMCA on campus of Andrews University. 00:08:37.68\00:08:40.55 I'm going to the church, Sabbath morning, 00:08:40.58\00:08:42.05 I'm driving my car and suddenly front of me 00:08:42.08\00:08:44.05 there's that, that shiny car flip flop me 00:08:44.09\00:08:47.16 cut the way, I almost hit there, 00:08:47.19\00:08:49.76 you know, that car 00:08:49.79\00:08:51.36 and there is something, that anger within me. 00:08:51.39\00:08:54.10 You know, students from Andrews 00:08:54.13\00:08:55.50 driving there without thinking 00:08:55.53\00:08:56.87 and my wife said, keep in mind 00:08:56.90\00:08:58.23 at that this moment he is very close to you, 00:08:58.27\00:09:00.57 he's your neighbor 00:09:00.60\00:09:01.94 And suddenly how my attitude changes. 00:09:01.97\00:09:04.77 Yes. 00:09:04.81\00:09:06.14 My neighbor. 00:09:06.17\00:09:07.58 Actually, I remember when I preachedthere in Chicago 00:09:07.61\00:09:11.75 I preached about that and I try to tell people, 00:09:11.78\00:09:14.25 you see, it's very hard to love our neighbors 00:09:14.28\00:09:16.92 But if you want to love people, 00:09:16.95\00:09:18.95 you have to make them your neighbors. 00:09:18.99\00:09:21.32 It makes sense?
