Welcome back. We've been exploring 00:00:01.33\00:00:03.03 this marvelous parable in Matthew Chapter 20. 00:00:03.06\00:00:06.70 It deals with the issue of salvation. 00:00:06.74\00:00:08.67 You know, Ranko, as we were talking about, 00:00:08.70\00:00:10.47 I was thinking about my parents 00:00:10.51\00:00:12.17 who spent their entire lives in mission service. 00:00:12.21\00:00:16.28 My dad spent four years in prison camp. 00:00:16.31\00:00:19.11 They served from the beginning of their lives. 00:00:19.15\00:00:21.42 They were the early morning laborers. 00:00:21.45\00:00:24.25 And then, you compare the thief on the cross. 00:00:24.29\00:00:28.09 Last moment-- He's messed up. 00:00:28.12\00:00:29.46 His life is a mess. He gives his heart to Jesus. 00:00:29.49\00:00:33.73 And yet, the same God gives the gift of salvation to both. 00:00:33.76\00:00:38.60 Actually, last year, I also buried my own father. 00:00:38.63\00:00:42.34 He knew Christ for exactly 60 years. 00:00:45.57\00:00:50.28 When he became a Christian, 00:00:50.31\00:00:51.65 his life was changed completely. 00:00:51.68\00:00:54.22 He embraced the Gospel message. 00:00:54.25\00:00:57.79 The only talk that he knew it was about Jesus Christ 00:00:57.82\00:01:01.39 what He did for me and he died. 00:01:01.42\00:01:03.79 But I meet very nice people 00:01:03.83\00:01:06.09 and may be they are some of those 00:01:06.13\00:01:08.50 among our viewers who may be, 00:01:08.53\00:01:11.13 are already the advanced age. 00:01:11.17\00:01:14.84 They heard about the Gospel message 00:01:14.87\00:01:16.84 and they wonder if God can forgive them, 00:01:16.87\00:01:19.21 if God can accept them. 00:01:19.24\00:01:22.11 I would like to tell you that the Gospel of Matthew is a-- 00:01:22.14\00:01:26.48 has a very encouraging message to all of us. 00:01:26.51\00:01:30.69 Even if you are 50, 60 and 80, 00:01:30.72\00:01:34.49 God is calling you come to Him. 00:01:34.52\00:01:39.09 That's no matter how long you have known Jesus Christ. 00:01:39.13\00:01:42.70 Of course, it will be good if you know Jesus Christ 00:01:42.73\00:01:44.97 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago. 00:01:45.00\00:01:47.74 But if this now an opportunity is take that opportunity, 00:01:47.77\00:01:52.61 accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior. 00:01:52.64\00:01:55.78 Salvation and His acceptance 00:01:55.81\00:01:58.05 is not based about your worst 00:01:58.08\00:02:00.32 on the years of the service. 00:02:00.35\00:02:02.25 It is on your complete dedication to Him 00:02:02.28\00:02:06.05 and to His service. 00:02:06.09\00:02:07.42 So if we come early in the day or at 5 o' clock, 00:02:07.46\00:02:10.09 we still receive this gift that comes from God. 00:02:10.13\00:02:12.26 Now after the parable Jesus presses towards Jerusalem. 00:02:12.29\00:02:16.53 It says in verse 17, He took the disciples aside. 00:02:16.56\00:02:20.37 Now in the past, 00:02:20.40\00:02:21.74 He had spoken about His death in a general way. 00:02:21.77\00:02:24.44 He gets more specific now. 00:02:24.47\00:02:26.07 He tells very, very clearly verse 18 00:02:26.11\00:02:28.91 "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, 00:02:28.94\00:02:30.61 and the Son of Man will be delivered up 00:02:30.65\00:02:32.18 to the Chief Priests and to the Scribes. 00:02:32.21\00:02:34.22 They will condemn him to death and deliver him 00:02:34.25\00:02:36.79 to the Gentiles to be mocked, and scourged, and crucified 00:02:36.82\00:02:39.79 and he will rise on the third day." 00:02:39.82\00:02:42.02 It's very clear. 00:02:42.06\00:02:43.39 It said that the Gentiles will mock and scourge him. 00:02:43.43\00:02:46.26 Jesus actually told them everything in detail 00:02:46.29\00:02:49.56 what--what will happen to him. 00:02:49.60\00:02:51.27 There was no any, any doubt. 00:02:51.30\00:02:52.80 But the next story tells us they didn't quite get it. 00:02:52.83\00:02:55.00 But they didn't get it. 00:02:55.04\00:02:56.44 Not only that, we know when we read 00:02:56.47\00:02:58.94 the end of the Gospels, how much they were 00:02:58.97\00:03:01.11 disappointed when Jesus was crucified. 00:03:01.14\00:03:03.11 They did not get anything. 00:03:03.14\00:03:05.01 And actually this is a great way for me personally. 00:03:05.05\00:03:07.98 And to all of us, ask so many times 00:03:08.02\00:03:11.15 we can be obsessed with some of our ideas, 00:03:11.19\00:03:14.32 what we have been believed for years, 00:03:14.36\00:03:16.46 what we have known for years. 00:03:16.49\00:03:17.83 When the message of the Bible comes to us, 00:03:17.86\00:03:20.96 when Jesus Christ knocks on the door of our hearts, 00:03:21.00\00:03:24.07 we don't get it. 00:03:24.10\00:03:25.43 Because it's very, very much important 00:03:25.47\00:03:28.04 to surrender ourselves to God 00:03:28.07\00:03:30.17 and ask God to emptiness of anything that prevent us 00:03:30.21\00:03:35.91 to accept Him as our personal savior. 00:03:35.94\00:03:37.91 But, Ranko, the story of the mother of the sons of Zebedee, 00:03:37.95\00:03:43.55 James and John coming, 00:03:43.59\00:03:45.45 and kind of manipulating in the background, 00:03:45.49\00:03:47.79 she's got a family connection. 00:03:47.82\00:03:50.09 She can work it and you know in the East, 00:03:50.13\00:03:52.19 you don't say no to mother. 00:03:52.23\00:03:54.23 So she calms and she wants to give the special place. 00:03:54.30\00:03:56.67 They really don't understand where Jesus is heading. 00:03:56.70\00:04:00.57 Yeah, actually Jesus is making very clear. 00:04:00.60\00:04:04.14 We are going to Jerusalem. 00:04:04.17\00:04:07.61 The Gentiles will kill Me there. 00:04:07.64\00:04:10.95 They will scourge Me. They will kill Me. 00:04:10.98\00:04:12.58 Actually, He really provides in details 00:04:12.61\00:04:15.42 what will happen to Him in Jerusalem. 00:04:15.45\00:04:17.89 But the disciples did not get it. 00:04:17.92\00:04:20.26 He's talking about cross. 00:04:20.29\00:04:21.66 They are remembering what He said about thrones 00:04:21.69\00:04:24.26 and they wanna make sure they get the right thone. 00:04:24.29\00:04:26.93 How does He respond to them? 00:04:26.96\00:04:28.26 So just few chapters earlier, 00:04:28.30\00:04:30.43 they came to Jesus asking Him. 00:04:30.47\00:04:32.60 When He establishes His kingdom, 00:04:32.63\00:04:34.00 they would like to be the prime ministers 00:04:34.04\00:04:35.77 one on the right, another one on the left. 00:04:35.80\00:04:37.87 Evidently, they were unsuccessful. 00:04:37.91\00:04:39.91 What are they now doing? 00:04:39.94\00:04:41.28 They're sending their own mother to persuade 00:04:41.31\00:04:43.55 Jesus to give them permanent place in His kingdom. 00:04:43.58\00:04:47.72 Well, now the other disciples are upset probably in part 00:04:47.75\00:04:50.92 because they didn't think of this idea, 00:04:50.95\00:04:52.55 this strategy, you know? 00:04:52.59\00:04:54.32 And Jesus speaks about 00:04:54.36\00:04:55.69 a purpose of this mission in verse 28, 00:04:55.72\00:04:57.99 Ranko, it's so important. Let's read that. 00:04:58.03\00:05:00.90 Actually from 26 would be nice. All right. 00:05:00.93\00:05:03.70 It shall not be so among you 00:05:03.73\00:05:05.53 but whoever would be great among 00:05:05.57\00:05:06.94 you must be your servant 00:05:06.97\00:05:08.40 and whoever would be first among you, 00:05:08.44\00:05:09.97 must be your slave even as the son of man 00:05:10.01\00:05:12.97 came not be served but to serve 00:05:13.01\00:05:15.48 and to give His life as a ransom for many. 00:05:15.51\00:05:18.78 What a beautiful statement. Powerful, powerful. 00:05:18.81\00:05:21.28 What Jesus made the statement 00:05:21.32\00:05:22.65 at His kingdom is not about the prestige, 00:05:22.68\00:05:25.79 is not about getting power to rule over the people. 00:05:25.82\00:05:29.59 If you really want to have 00:05:29.62\00:05:31.53 a permanent place in the kingdom, 00:05:31.56\00:05:34.03 it means you want to be servant, 00:05:34.10\00:05:36.56 to serve to the needs of people, 00:05:36.60\00:05:38.97 to bring the salvation, 00:05:39.00\00:05:40.50 to bring Jesus Christ in the lives. 00:05:40.54\00:05:42.57 Actually, if you want to be the follower of Jesus, 00:05:42.60\00:05:46.61 you have to follow in the footsteps of the master, 00:05:46.64\00:05:49.28 because Jesus came not with the power, 00:05:49.31\00:05:51.98 He came to be the servant 00:05:52.01\00:05:53.62 and to save people from their sins 00:05:53.65\00:05:56.05 as we read at the beginning of the chapter 00:05:56.08\00:05:57.79 and Jesus repeats it in verse 28. 00:05:57.82\00:06:01.49 And His mission to be a ransom 00:06:01.52\00:06:03.12 for many is what takes us in Chapter 21 00:06:03.16\00:06:06.23 to the entry into Jerusalem. 00:06:06.26\00:06:08.60 May I read some of that, 00:06:08.63\00:06:09.96 and when they drew near to Jerusalem, 00:06:10.00\00:06:11.67 and came to Bethany, to the Mount of Olives, 00:06:11.70\00:06:13.94 then Jesus sent His disciples, 00:06:13.97\00:06:15.44 two off them saying to them 00:06:15.47\00:06:16.81 go into the village opposite you, 00:06:16.84\00:06:18.24 and immediately you will find 00:06:18.27\00:06:19.61 a donkey tied in a colt with her, untie them, 00:06:19.64\00:06:22.11 and bring them to me. 00:06:22.14\00:06:23.48 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 00:06:23.51\00:06:25.75 The Lord has needed them, 00:06:25.78\00:06:27.45 and he will send them immediately. 00:06:27.48\00:06:29.45 This took place to fulfill 00:06:29.48\00:06:30.85 what was spoken by the prophet saying 00:06:30.89\00:06:32.85 tell the daughter of Zion, 00:06:32.89\00:06:34.22 'Behold, your king is coming humble, 00:06:34.26\00:06:36.06 and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, 00:06:36.09\00:06:38.39 the foal of a donkey. 00:06:38.43\00:06:39.96 The disciples went, 00:06:40.00\00:06:41.30 and did as Jesus had directed them. 00:06:41.33\00:06:42.93 They brought the donkey, 00:06:42.96\00:06:44.30 and the colt, and put their garments on them, 00:06:44.33\00:06:46.00 and He sat there on most of the crowds, 00:06:46.03\00:06:47.97 spread their garments on the road 00:06:48.00\00:06:49.64 and others cut branches from the trees 00:06:49.67\00:06:51.87 and spread them on the road and the crowds 00:06:51.91\00:06:54.01 that went before Him and followed Him shouted 00:06:54.04\00:06:56.28 "Hosanna!" to the son of David. 00:06:56.31\00:06:59.08 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:06:59.11\00:07:01.82 Hosanna in the highest.' 00:07:01.85\00:07:04.22 And when He entered Jerusalem, 00:07:04.25\00:07:05.59 all of the city was stirred saying who is this? 00:07:05.62\00:07:09.72 And the crowd said, 00:07:09.76\00:07:11.09 "This is the Prophet Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee. 00:07:11.13\00:07:15.06 Now, Ranko, one question I have is, 00:07:15.10\00:07:17.20 He is going to Jerusalem. 00:07:17.23\00:07:18.60 He knows the cross is ahead Him, 00:07:18.63\00:07:20.47 but He asks about these animals, why? 00:07:20.50\00:07:23.44 Number one is again, again, 00:07:25.54\00:07:28.78 we have the same truth in Gospel of Matthew. 00:07:28.81\00:07:31.58 It's verse 4. 00:07:31.61\00:07:33.72 This took place in order 00:07:33.75\00:07:35.55 that the prophecy can be fulfilled. 00:07:35.58\00:07:38.79 Now in many of the pagan nations, 00:07:38.82\00:07:41.19 a king would come riding on a warhorse, 00:07:41.22\00:07:43.73 very much a warrior and so forth. 00:07:43.76\00:07:45.33 Have you ever seen any picture of Rome-- 00:07:45.36\00:07:47.10 Roman general or any prominent 00:07:47.13\00:07:50.13 ancient ruler riding on a donkey? 00:07:50.17\00:07:53.60 No, I think, no. 00:07:53.64\00:07:54.97 A donkey is the beast of burden. 00:07:55.00\00:07:56.37 It's the common laborer's animal. 00:07:56.40\00:07:58.47 Yeah. It's the animal of poor people. 00:07:58.51\00:08:00.81 Yes, living there in the mountain areas 00:08:00.84\00:08:03.28 and you can use the donkey. 00:08:03.31\00:08:04.71 But it's not reserved for the ruler. 00:08:04.75\00:08:07.88 So Jesus is still arriving. 00:08:07.92\00:08:09.82 He is as a king entering city, city of Jerusalem. 00:08:09.85\00:08:14.52 But according to the prophecy, 00:08:14.56\00:08:16.89 He came--actually this is the elaboration 00:08:16.93\00:08:18.93 what we arrived. 00:08:18.96\00:08:20.30 Jesus came not to be served, but to serve, 00:08:20.33\00:08:24.43 He is coming as a servant. 00:08:24.47\00:08:26.70 in order to fulfill that prophecy. 00:08:26.74\00:08:28.54 And He's wanting to change 00:08:28.57\00:08:29.90 their understanding of what the messiah was, 00:08:29.94\00:08:31.94 because other sections of the prophets, 00:08:31.97\00:08:33.88 the prophecy of Zachariah 00:08:33.91\00:08:35.71 described a conquering king and so forth, 00:08:35.74\00:08:38.15 but this section it is chosen here, 00:08:38.18\00:08:40.82 it speaks to that servant role. 00:08:40.85\00:08:42.68 Let's put it in this way. 00:08:42.72\00:08:44.62 The prophecy was telling us 00:08:44.65\00:08:46.09 the messiah would come into His own city, city Jerusalem. 00:08:46.12\00:08:51.83 He would sit on the throne of David. 00:08:51.86\00:08:54.93 So according to the Gospel of Matthew, 00:08:54.96\00:08:57.47 when people saw Jesus entering Jerusalem, 00:08:57.50\00:09:00.57 they recognized the fulfillment of the prophecy. 00:09:00.60\00:09:03.81 The Messiah is coming into-- He is entering His city. 00:09:03.84\00:09:10.58 However, so they had the fulfillment of the prophecy. 00:09:10.61\00:09:15.02 However, the lesson that Jesus told them, 00:09:15.05\00:09:17.29 He did not come to establish the earthly kingdom. 00:09:17.32\00:09:20.09 He did not come like, like a powerful ruler on the horse. 00:09:20.12\00:09:24.43 His mission was not in His power and authority. 00:09:24.46\00:09:27.66 His mission was in servanthood. 00:09:27.73\00:09:30.10 He came to save people from their sins. 00:09:30.17\00:09:32.30 So its freedom from sin rather than 00:09:32.33\00:09:34.14 freedom from Rome that is His primary focus. 00:09:34.17\00:09:37.61 They recognized this is a great event. 00:09:37.64\00:09:40.58 Hosanna to the son of David, 00:09:40.61\00:09:42.24 blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:09:42.28\00:09:44.41 Hosanna to the highest. 00:09:44.45\00:09:45.88 What attributes they are giving. 00:09:45.91\00:09:47.85 Now they still don't quite understand 00:09:47.88\00:09:49.28 because all they say is that He is a Prophet. 00:09:49.32\00:09:50.89 Actually you could expect 00:09:50.92\00:09:52.25 that Jesus would-- would be real. 00:09:52.29\00:09:54.16 You see finally they recognize Him 00:09:54.19\00:09:56.12 as the promised king. 00:09:56.16\00:09:57.56 However, when we go to other Synoptic Gospels, 00:09:57.59\00:09:59.73 I think its Luke or Mark. 00:09:59.76\00:10:01.06 I forget it. They said, 00:10:01.10\00:10:02.96 "At that shouting when Jesus saw the city, 00:10:03.00\00:10:05.90 He started weeping." 00:10:05.93\00:10:08.90 Because He knew that people 00:10:08.94\00:10:11.27 were shouting to Him for wrong reason. 00:10:11.31\00:10:13.44 They were shouting Hosanna. 00:10:13.48\00:10:15.04 Just few days later, they are shouting crucify Him 00:10:15.08\00:10:18.21 and crucify because their hopes 00:10:18.25\00:10:20.38 were not fulfilled into that earthly kingdom. 00:10:20.42\00:10:22.38 That's right. Let's remember 00:10:22.42\00:10:23.85 that this is the first of the Passion Week 00:10:23.89\00:10:25.92 and very soon the crowd will change 00:10:25.95\00:10:28.29 how fickle the crowd is. 00:10:28.32\00:10:29.82 But, you know, you said, 00:10:29.86\00:10:31.23 we might expect Jesus to be happy 00:10:31.26\00:10:32.99 and certainly if you think about the disciples, 00:10:33.03\00:10:34.93 they must have enjoyed this. 00:10:34.93\00:10:36.50 Probably, Judas the most. 00:10:36.53\00:10:38.50 Now at last, we've come. 00:10:38.53\00:10:40.00 Everything looks good, 00:10:40.04\00:10:41.37 but then He does this strange thing 00:10:41.40\00:10:43.04 of going into the temple and cleansing the temple. 00:10:43.07\00:10:46.88 Ranko, you would've thought the disciples would say, 00:10:46.91\00:10:49.51 okay, now look, you've come to Jerusalem. 00:10:49.54\00:10:51.61 The crowds are accepting you. 00:10:51.65\00:10:53.08 Work with the Pharisees a little bit. 00:10:53.11\00:10:55.52 You know, compromise a bit with Sadducees Jesus. 00:10:55.55\00:10:58.32 This is the time for you to set up your kingdom. 00:10:58.35\00:11:00.76 Actually, we go and see 00:11:00.79\00:11:04.86 the picture of Ancient temple in Jerusalem 00:11:04.89\00:11:07.56 is we know that the temple had several courts. 00:11:07.60\00:11:12.93 The first court was known as the court of the Gentiles. 00:11:12.97\00:11:18.01 Into that section of the temple, 00:11:18.04\00:11:21.28 all Gentiles could come. 00:11:21.31\00:11:22.68 That's all where they could come. 00:11:22.71\00:11:24.05 The next one was the court of the Jews-- 00:11:24.08\00:11:27.62 the court of women were women could come, 00:11:27.65\00:11:29.95 the next one the court of Jews, Israelites 00:11:29.98\00:11:33.72 and then after the court of the priest. 00:11:33.76\00:11:36.26 The Gentiles could come only into the first section. 00:11:36.29\00:11:40.30 At the door of the next section, 00:11:40.33\00:11:41.86 there was an inscription that any Gentile 00:11:41.90\00:11:44.43 who would go through this door, 00:11:44.47\00:11:46.00 will be responsible for his own death. 00:11:46.03\00:11:49.60 That temple that God established 00:11:49.64\00:11:51.17 to be the house of prayer to all nations. 00:11:51.21\00:11:55.44 Actually, the greedy Sadducees, 00:11:55.48\00:11:57.45 they made it to the place 00:11:57.48\00:11:59.18 to steal money, money from people. 00:11:59.21\00:12:02.85 When Jesus came, 00:12:02.88\00:12:04.22 He came to save His people from their sins. 00:12:04.25\00:12:06.19 He wanted to save all people and what He could see 00:12:06.22\00:12:09.92 there were greedy Sadducees. 00:12:09.96\00:12:12.96 There was nothing for the Gentiles 00:12:12.99\00:12:15.03 that they could learn about the God of Israel, 00:12:15.06\00:12:17.67 about those promises of salvation 00:12:17.70\00:12:19.67 that is actually offered to them. 00:12:19.70\00:12:22.14 This was the only new occasion that made Jesus angry 00:12:22.17\00:12:25.04 and provoked the action that He did. 00:12:25.07\00:12:26.91 We don't have time to explore it 00:12:26.94\00:12:28.28 but the bearing fig tree acted 00:12:28.31\00:12:30.05 out parable is exactly 00:12:30.08\00:12:31.75 what the temple would become. 00:12:31.78\00:12:33.82 Jesus comes to cleanse the temple. 00:12:33.85\00:12:35.48 Ranko, it's the second time. 00:12:35.52\00:12:36.85 What does that tell us about 00:12:36.89\00:12:38.22 our lives just for a little devotional thought, 00:12:38.25\00:12:40.46 Jesus comes to cleanse the temple. 00:12:40.49\00:12:42.42 Yes, Jesus wants to cleanse us as well. 00:12:42.46\00:12:45.56 He does not look always at our mistakes, 00:12:45.59\00:12:48.46 our shortcomings because He is Savior, 00:12:48.50\00:12:50.67 He wants to save us. 00:12:50.70\00:12:52.50
