We want to, to serve you faithfully. 00:01:53.71\00:01:57.61 We want to learn more of you 00:01:57.65\00:01:58.98 and as we're studying your scriptures, 00:01:59.01\00:02:01.15 may we hear your voice. 00:02:01.18\00:02:02.75 May we be drawn to you as our Lord and Savior. 00:02:02.78\00:02:05.45 As you move to the cross in these chapters, 00:02:05.49\00:02:08.86 may we be moved to follow you there. 00:02:08.89\00:02:10.96 In Jesus name, we pray. 00:02:10.99\00:02:12.69 Amen. 00:02:12.73\00:02:15.20 We've been following Jesus journey 00:02:15.23\00:02:16.93 through Galilee now as He's heading 00:02:16.97\00:02:19.30 towards Jerusalem and He has just dealt 00:02:19.33\00:02:22.54 with the story of the rich young ruler 00:02:22.57\00:02:24.97 who came and asked what must I do to be saved 00:02:25.01\00:02:28.08 and the disciples were a little concerned 00:02:28.11\00:02:30.65 about this issue and they are wondering 00:02:30.68\00:02:33.88 will there be a reward? 00:02:33.92\00:02:35.25 Will there be a benefit for following Jesus 00:02:35.28\00:02:38.12 and He tells them a parable. 00:02:38.15\00:02:40.39 Actually it's really the introduction to chapter 20. 00:02:40.42\00:02:43.96 One more time, let me remind, 00:02:43.99\00:02:45.59 the viewer says that when we started 00:02:45.63\00:02:47.73 the Bible, lets be careful 00:02:47.76\00:02:49.73 not just to stay within one chapter 00:02:49.76\00:02:52.00 because Matthew never divided 00:02:52.03\00:02:53.67 His gospel in to chapters. 00:02:53.70\00:02:55.54 Because chapter 20 is connected 00:02:55.57\00:02:59.44 with the previous text and the text that follows 00:02:59.47\00:03:03.58 chapter 20 builds on that so, so its very, very important 00:03:03.61\00:03:08.38 to keep that, that context of the text 00:03:08.42\00:03:12.19 in order to get the full message. 00:03:12.22\00:03:13.66 So, Glenn, I would really like to ask you 00:03:13.69\00:03:15.69 if you can read verses 27 to 30. 00:03:15.72\00:03:18.46 All right. Mathew Chapter 18 and we'll start with-- 00:03:18.49\00:03:21.30 No, 19-- Excuse me, 19, yes. 00:03:21.33\00:03:23.13 Chapter 19 verse 27 and following. 00:03:23.16\00:03:26.60 "Then Peter said in reply, 00:03:26.63\00:03:28.67 'Lord we have left everything and followed you. 00:03:28.70\00:03:30.57 What then shall we receive?' 00:03:30.61\00:03:32.51 Jesus said to them, truly I say to you 00:03:32.54\00:03:34.94 in the new world, when the son of man 00:03:34.98\00:03:36.85 shall sit on his glorious throne, 00:03:36.88\00:03:39.05 you who have followed me will also sit on 12 thrones, 00:03:39.08\00:03:43.02 judging the 12 tribes of Israel 00:03:43.05\00:03:45.32 and everyone who has left houses 00:03:45.35\00:03:47.06 or brothers or sisters or mother or father 00:03:47.09\00:03:49.12 or children or lands for my sake 00:03:49.16\00:03:51.99 will receive a 100 fold 00:03:52.03\00:03:53.56 and inherit eternal life, 00:03:53.60\00:03:55.40 but many that are first, 00:03:55.43\00:03:57.20 will be last and the last will be first. 00:03:57.23\00:04:00.04 So, Glenn, what is now the context? 00:04:00.07\00:04:02.17 You see the rich young man became sad-- 00:04:02.20\00:04:07.98 And turned away. 00:04:08.01\00:04:09.34 And turned away and Peter looks at him 00:04:09.38\00:04:12.75 and they say, "Wow, who can be saved 00:04:12.78\00:04:17.79 and Jesus answers in verse 26, 00:04:17.82\00:04:20.99 "With people this is impossible, 00:04:21.02\00:04:23.76 but with God all things are possible." 00:04:23.79\00:04:26.09 So Peter now became encouraged 00:04:26.13\00:04:28.16 and he said yeah, the Lord. 00:04:28.20\00:04:29.60 You see this young men did not want 00:04:29.63\00:04:31.87 to leave his procession in order to follow you 00:04:31.90\00:04:35.97 but we have left everything and Jesus was-- 00:04:36.00\00:04:39.91 And that was an honest statement. 00:04:39.94\00:04:41.28 An honest statement but Jesus says, 00:04:42.68\00:04:44.81 yes, whoever leaves everything in this world 00:04:44.85\00:04:48.78 for the sake of the kingdom 00:04:48.82\00:04:50.89 in the kingdom of God, he will receive much, 00:04:50.92\00:04:55.12 much more than he had to sacrifice 00:04:55.16\00:04:57.76 and to leave in this life. 00:04:57.79\00:04:59.46 And I am sure many of us have asked 00:04:59.49\00:05:01.10 that same question. 00:05:01.13\00:05:02.46 Jesus I've paid a price for following you. 00:05:02.50\00:05:06.23 What's the benefit? Will it be worth it 00:05:06.27\00:05:09.00 to follow Jesus that's their question, isn't it? 00:05:09.04\00:05:11.84 And who knows, maybe, this rich ruler, 00:05:11.87\00:05:17.25 young ruler want they maybe he repented, 00:05:17.28\00:05:20.95 came back to Christ who knows that-- 00:05:20.98\00:05:22.32 We don't know, yes. 00:05:22.35\00:05:23.69 But Jesus said many who were now first, 00:05:23.72\00:05:26.55 will be the last, 00:05:26.59\00:05:29.26 okay? And the last first. 00:05:29.29\00:05:30.83 The rich young ruler he was first, 00:05:30.86\00:05:34.20 I mean, he obeyed all the commandments. 00:05:34.23\00:05:36.03 He was the first, but he would be the last. 00:05:36.06\00:05:37.93 But those who were last, they were not taken 00:05:37.97\00:05:40.20 seriously by the Pharisees like the disciples. 00:05:40.24\00:05:42.70 But they will be the first 00:05:42.74\00:05:44.07 and now Jesus in order to illustrate it, 00:05:44.11\00:05:46.78 now he says the following parable. 00:05:46.81\00:05:48.68 Glenn, would be good that we read this parable, okay? 00:05:48.71\00:05:51.11 All right. Mathew chapter 20 verse 1. 00:05:51.15\00:05:54.95 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder 00:05:54.98\00:05:57.15 who went out early in the morning 00:05:57.19\00:05:58.52 to hire laborers for his vineyard." 00:05:58.55\00:06:00.46 And we should say this is a very common practice. 00:06:00.49\00:06:03.19 Yeah. You'd go out looking for workers for-- 00:06:03.22\00:06:04.96 To the market place there. 00:06:04.99\00:06:06.33 Yes, still in many parts of the world. 00:06:06.36\00:06:08.70 I was in Cairo last year 00:06:08.73\00:06:10.57 and you see men waiting for work that day. 00:06:10.60\00:06:13.44 They're sitting on the sidewalk 00:06:13.47\00:06:14.90 waiting for someone to hire them. 00:06:14.94\00:06:16.27 Especially we go to near east, it's still common. 00:06:16.30\00:06:18.31 You go to the market there, people even begging you, 00:06:18.34\00:06:20.34 asking you for a job that's, that's very normal. 00:06:20.38\00:06:22.84 And after agreeing with the laborers 00:06:22.88\00:06:24.51 for a denarius for a day, 00:06:24.55\00:06:26.31 he sent them into his vineyard. 00:06:26.35\00:06:28.18 And going out about the third hour, 00:06:28.22\00:06:29.88 he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 00:06:29.92\00:06:32.35 and to them he said, 00:06:32.39\00:06:33.72 'You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right, 00:06:33.76\00:06:35.82 I will give you.' So they went. 00:06:35.86\00:06:38.19 Going out again about the sixth hour 00:06:38.23\00:06:40.86 and the ninth hour, he did the same. 00:06:40.90\00:06:43.50 And about the eleventh hour, 00:06:43.53\00:06:45.10 he went out and found others standing, 00:06:45.13\00:06:46.77 and he said to them, 00:06:46.80\00:06:48.14 'Why do you stand here idle all day?' 00:06:48.17\00:06:49.80 They said to him, 'Because no one has hired us.' 00:06:49.84\00:06:52.07 He said to them, 'Go into my vineyard also.' 00:06:52.11\00:06:55.98 And when the evening came, 00:06:56.01\00:06:57.35 the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, 00:06:57.38\00:06:59.05 'Call the laborers and pay them their wages, 00:06:59.08\00:07:01.62 beginning with the last, up to the first.' 00:07:01.65\00:07:04.75 Now that should--we should be alert to that point. 00:07:04.79\00:07:07.52 There's some reason for the last to the first. 00:07:07.56\00:07:10.26 "And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, 00:07:10.29\00:07:14.36 each one of them received the denarius. 00:07:14.40\00:07:17.53 Now when the first came, 00:07:17.57\00:07:18.90 they thought they would receive more, 00:07:18.93\00:07:20.84 but each of them also received a denarius. 00:07:20.87\00:07:23.87 And on receiving it, 00:07:23.91\00:07:25.24 they grumbled at the householder, saying, 00:07:25.27\00:07:27.24 'These last worked only one hour, 00:07:27.28\00:07:29.41 and you have made them equal to us 00:07:29.44\00:07:31.11 who have borne the burden of the day 00:07:31.15\00:07:32.68 and the scorching heat.' He replied to them, 00:07:32.71\00:07:35.85 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong, 00:07:35.88\00:07:38.49 did I not agree with you for a denarius? 00:07:38.52\00:07:41.29 Take what belongs to you, and go, 00:07:41.32\00:07:43.69 I choose to give to this last as I give to you. 00:07:43.73\00:07:48.30 Am I not allowed to do 00:07:48.33\00:07:50.23 what I choose with what belongs to me? 00:07:50.27\00:07:52.40 Or do you begrudge my generosity?' 00:07:52.43\00:07:54.80 So the last will be first, and the first will be last." 00:07:54.84\00:07:58.34 We come right back to that book end statement. 00:07:58.37\00:08:00.51 So verse 16 is actually a repetition of verse 30 00:08:00.54\00:08:06.58 of the previous chapter 00:08:06.61\00:08:07.95 so telling us that the parable of the Jesus said 00:08:07.98\00:08:12.35 he has stated it's related to what is before. 00:08:12.39\00:08:15.72 So let's put it in the context. 00:08:15.76\00:08:18.86 Who are those who were the first starting working, 00:08:18.89\00:08:22.86 who are those who are the last? I don't know. 00:08:22.90\00:08:26.00 Maybe this young ruler 00:08:26.03\00:08:27.37 who was so perfect in keeping the law 00:08:27.40\00:08:29.54 maybe he could be that who really worked hard. 00:08:29.57\00:08:32.94 He work very, very much. 00:08:32.97\00:08:35.34 What about Peter and the apostles? Could they be? 00:08:35.38\00:08:38.85 Peter said you see we have left everything. 00:08:38.88\00:08:41.25 They could counter themselves. 00:08:41.28\00:08:42.98 What about some of the Pharisees 00:08:43.02\00:08:44.39 who were the first to obey every rule. Yes. 00:08:44.42\00:08:47.22 But the point that Jesus made it here, 00:08:47.26\00:08:49.62 He says that a man went there 00:08:49.66\00:08:51.13 to the marketplace looking for laborers. 00:08:51.16\00:08:54.00 When did he go there? We don't know. 00:08:54.00\00:08:56.77 But the fact that he said that he went 00:08:56.80\00:08:59.30 for a second time after-- 00:08:59.33\00:09:02.67 He was early the first time he was. 00:09:02.70\00:09:04.07 Yeah. He said in third hour, 00:09:04.11\00:09:06.01 we have to understand what third hour is 00:09:06.04\00:09:07.68 and with the Jewish people, 00:09:07.71\00:09:09.54 the day started at 6:00 in the morning so 7:00 a.m. 00:09:09.58\00:09:14.55 would be the first hour, 8:00 a.m. 00:09:14.58\00:09:17.69 would be the second, okay? 00:09:17.72\00:09:20.32 And the third hour would be 9:00 a.m. 00:09:20.36\00:09:23.26 So he went at 9:00 in the morning. 00:09:23.29\00:09:25.86 Then after that, he went when? 00:09:25.89\00:09:27.96 At the sixth hour which will be noon. 00:09:27.96\00:09:31.27 Then he went at the ninth hour, which will be 3:00 p.m. 00:09:31.30\00:09:35.67 and the 11 hour would be 5:00 p.m. 00:09:35.70\00:09:39.07 Almost quitting time. They worked only for one hour. 00:09:39.11\00:09:44.85 Ranko, I have, I have worked in this kind of situation 00:09:44.88\00:09:47.68 where you hope someone hires you 00:09:47.72\00:09:49.35 and you know you're gonna get paid by the hour. 00:09:49.38\00:09:51.49 You're not gonna get the same wages. Sure. 00:09:51.52\00:09:54.16 So the question is he said what is right 00:09:54.19\00:09:57.23 I will give it to you. 00:09:57.26\00:09:58.59 What was right to pay to them? 00:09:58.63\00:10:00.33 We know the time of Jesus. 00:10:00.36\00:10:02.16 If you work one day, 00:10:02.20\00:10:03.73 there was something very right to be paid 00:10:03.77\00:10:06.47 and what was that one denarius, 00:10:06.50\00:10:08.57 which was daily wage. 00:10:08.60\00:10:10.01 Very generous, very established standard 00:10:10.04\00:10:13.81 and norm to pay person for daily work 00:10:13.84\00:10:18.68 so there was no issue with regard to that. 00:10:18.71\00:10:21.52 But we have a great surprise here in the story. 00:10:21.55\00:10:25.29 What's going on, Glenn? It's interesting. 00:10:25.32\00:10:27.22 At the beginning, He arranges the price. 00:10:27.26\00:10:29.26 Later, he says I'll pay you what's right. That's right. 00:10:29.29\00:10:31.56 So they have to trust that he's gonna be fair with them. 00:10:31.59\00:10:34.50 They know they don't expect to get a full wage. 00:10:34.56\00:10:36.73 But there is no fairness here. 00:10:36.77\00:10:38.83 Well, the fact that he arranges 00:10:38.87\00:10:44.01 how they're gonna get paid is very intentional, isn't it? 00:10:44.04\00:10:46.81 Yeah. If he had just paid 00:10:46.84\00:10:48.51 the first ones first and they left, 00:10:48.54\00:10:50.31 they would've gotten the denarius 00:10:50.35\00:10:51.68 that they had agreed to. 00:10:51.71\00:10:53.05 The contract was fulfilled. 00:10:53.08\00:10:54.45 They would've gone home happy. 00:10:54.48\00:10:56.38 But now, when they are at the end of the line, 00:10:56.42\00:10:58.19 and they see those who worked an hour, 00:10:58.22\00:10:59.55 are getting what they expected, 00:10:59.59\00:11:01.26 they know they're gonna get more. 00:11:01.29\00:11:02.62 So those who worked for only one hour, 00:11:02.66\00:11:05.63 they got the denarius. A day's wage. 00:11:05.66\00:11:08.03 So if he, those who came the first one, 00:11:08.06\00:11:10.47 they expected, boy, if they got denarius, 00:11:10.50\00:11:14.54 boy, at least 12 times more. 00:11:14.57\00:11:16.50 At least, double in the day 00:11:16.54\00:11:18.81 and they were surprised actually 00:11:18.84\00:11:20.71 when they received the same amount 00:11:20.74\00:11:23.81 as those who came in the last moment. 00:11:23.85\00:11:26.98 May I say they weren't just surprised they were offended? 00:11:27.02\00:11:29.75 Yeah. They were upset and the way they speak 00:11:29.78\00:11:33.12 to the master is quite interesting, the householder. 00:11:33.15\00:11:36.12 You know, these last worked 00:11:36.16\00:11:37.96 only one hour you made them 00:11:37.99\00:11:39.33 equal to us who have what? 00:11:39.36\00:11:41.00 Who have borne the burden of the day 00:11:41.03\00:11:42.76 and the scorching heat. 00:11:42.80\00:11:45.47 They seem to misunderstand the intentions of the master. 00:11:45.50\00:11:50.37 Why is He doing this, Ranko? What's His point? 00:11:50.41\00:11:52.94 Why is He overly generous? 00:11:52.97\00:11:55.84 What is the issue here really? 00:11:55.88\00:11:57.65 Its verse 12. 00:11:57.68\00:11:59.01 Verse 11-12. 00:12:01.78\00:12:03.12 When they received one denarius, were they deserved? 00:12:03.15\00:12:08.29 The master did not cheat on them. No. 00:12:08.32\00:12:12.63 They really got what is-- but they said verse 12. 00:12:12.66\00:12:16.93 'These last men have worked only one hour, 00:12:16.97\00:12:20.64 and you made them equal to us 00:12:20.67\00:12:23.24 who have borne the burden 00:12:23.27\00:12:25.57 and the scorching heat of the day.' 00:12:25.61\00:12:29.48 We worked, since we worked, 00:12:29.51\00:12:32.41 we have to be rewarded for what we work. 00:12:32.45\00:12:36.32 What is the answer that the person gives? 00:12:36.35\00:12:40.02 He said friend, I am not doing you wrong, 00:12:40.06\00:12:43.76 did you not agree with me for a denarius? 00:12:43.79\00:12:47.23 Take what is yours, and go, 00:12:47.23\00:12:49.46 But I wish to give to these last men, the same as you. 00:12:49.50\00:12:52.60 It is not lawful of me to do what I wish what is my own. 00:12:52.63\00:12:56.84 Now the last statement is, 00:12:56.87\00:12:58.41 Or is your eye envious because I am generous? 00:12:58.44\00:13:04.51 We have to honestly say 00:13:04.55\00:13:06.51 we would've reacted as these labors did. 00:13:06.55\00:13:09.38 Come on, you know-- That's our human nature. 00:13:09.42\00:13:13.22 If I do eight times, nine times 00:13:13.25\00:13:16.83 what someone else does and they get the same pay, 00:13:16.86\00:13:19.93 we would not consider that justice. 00:13:19.96\00:13:21.93 This is beyond justice, isn't it? 00:13:21.96\00:13:23.87 Where is it telling us about the heart of God? 00:13:23.90\00:13:26.50 Glenn, we are dealing here with the gospel. 00:13:26.53\00:13:29.94 Gospel is not about how much I worked. 00:13:29.97\00:13:34.91 Is not about how much I deserved. 00:13:34.94\00:13:37.71 Let's keep something in mind. 00:13:37.75\00:13:40.25 Those people, even those who worked all day, 00:13:40.28\00:13:42.75 they did not get what they deserved. 00:13:42.78\00:13:45.75 The fact that they got a job 00:13:45.79\00:13:48.02 was the grace and the mercy of this person is. 00:13:48.06\00:13:52.86 You see the gospel message and salvation is not based on 00:13:52.89\00:13:56.70 what we worked, what we deserve. 00:13:56.73\00:14:00.94 It's everything because of the grace of God. 00:14:00.97\00:14:03.91 Glenn, do we have here a reminder of the text 00:14:03.94\00:14:07.04 that comes from Paul, we are saved by grace? Yes. 00:14:07.08\00:14:11.61 It's not according to the works that we can boast, everything 00:14:11.65\00:14:15.72 is because of the grace of God 00:14:15.75\00:14:17.15 more about that after the break. 00:14:17.19\00:14:18.95 It's not a wage. It's a gift of the generous God. 00:14:18.99\00:14:22.56 We're gonna come back to explore 00:14:22.59\00:14:23.93 a little bit more of Mathew Chapter 20. 00:14:23.96\00:14:26.23 Don't miss it. We'll be right back after our break. 00:14:26.26\00:14:28.53
