Hi, and welcome to "The Book of the Book" series 00:00:21.48\00:00:24.25 on "The Gospel of Matthew." 00:00:24.29\00:00:25.62 We're here studying scripture with Ranko Stefanovic, 00:00:25.65\00:00:29.86 New Testament professor 00:00:29.89\00:00:31.23 at Andrew's University Theological Seminary. 00:00:31.26\00:00:33.19 Ranko, it's a joy to study God's word together, isn't it? 00:00:33.23\00:00:35.63 Yes, Glenn, and I'm so glad that we can see love, 00:00:35.66\00:00:40.34 friendship here during this series 00:00:40.37\00:00:42.60 that is so much important. 00:00:42.64\00:00:44.61 We--you are teaching there at Andrew's University 00:00:44.64\00:00:47.34 in the Department of Religion. 00:00:47.38\00:00:48.91 We were in that department for number of years, 00:00:48.94\00:00:51.48 I think nine or ten years. 00:00:51.51\00:00:54.12 And I know how great impact you made on my own children 00:00:54.15\00:00:58.55 while teaching there at Andrew's Academy. 00:00:58.59\00:01:00.46 Oh, I think it's mutual. 00:01:00.49\00:01:01.92 My children loved your teaching as well. 00:01:01.96\00:01:04.63 You're a camp meeting speaker and scholar, 00:01:04.66\00:01:07.30 but a student of scripture. 00:01:07.36\00:01:08.66 And that's what we want to do there. That's what-- 00:01:08.70\00:01:10.03 We're just sitting here with our Bibles together 00:01:10.07\00:01:12.43 setting God's word and we're so glad 00:01:12.47\00:01:14.37 that each of you can join us. 00:01:14.40\00:01:16.20 It's been an exciting journey so far 00:01:16.24\00:01:18.04 as we've been going through Matthew. 00:01:18.07\00:01:20.11 I think you really enjoy, and learn and grow 00:01:20.14\00:01:24.05 as God speaks to us through His word today. 00:01:24.08\00:01:26.58 Let's get into the text after prayer. 00:01:26.61\00:01:29.35 Ranko, would you lead us in prayer 00:01:29.38\00:01:30.72 that God will guide us in our study? Yes. Yes. 00:01:30.75\00:01:32.99 Our Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us 00:01:33.02\00:01:37.96 this beautiful Gospel, Gospel of Matthew, 00:01:37.99\00:01:41.40 as we are going now trying to understand 00:01:41.43\00:01:43.70 those different texts in this Gospel. 00:01:43.73\00:01:47.00 Please give us the sermon and the Holy Spirit 00:01:47.04\00:01:49.94 to guide us in understanding, 00:01:49.97\00:01:51.87 when sometimes difficult statements 00:01:51.91\00:01:53.61 that we find in the text. 00:01:53.64\00:01:55.54 Thank you for Your help, thank you for being with us. 00:01:55.58\00:01:58.35 And we pray all of this 00:01:58.38\00:02:00.12 in the precious name of our savior, 00:02:00.15\00:02:01.95 Jesus Christ, amen. Amen. 00:02:01.98\00:02:05.62 Well, we've been following the path of Jesus' ministry. 00:02:05.65\00:02:10.23 It's taken us from His genealogy and His birth, 00:02:10.26\00:02:14.23 His baptism, the temptations, 00:02:14.30\00:02:16.30 His early ministry, His ministry in Galilee. 00:02:16.33\00:02:18.93 But now He is moving geographically 00:02:18.97\00:02:20.87 towards Jerusalem. Jerusalem. 00:02:20.90\00:02:22.47 He is moving towards the cross. Yes. 00:02:22.50\00:02:25.27 And the shadow of the cross leans 00:02:25.31\00:02:27.71 over all these pages, doesn't it? 00:02:27.74\00:02:29.44 As we get into these Chapters. 00:02:29.48\00:02:30.88 And Jesus knew that after the cross, 00:02:30.91\00:02:34.92 He will ascend there to heaven, 00:02:34.95\00:02:36.28 He will leave His disciples. 00:02:36.32\00:02:38.69 But evidently the disciples were not ready. 00:02:38.72\00:02:41.26 They were supposed to continue to work with Jesus Christ. 00:02:41.29\00:02:44.29 But evidently their focus was not on the mission. 00:02:44.33\00:02:47.86 Their focus was on themselves, 00:02:47.93\00:02:50.00 who will get the most benefit in the kingdom of heaven 00:02:50.03\00:02:54.94 that Jesus would establish. All right. 00:02:54.97\00:02:57.31 Today we're going to explore Matthew 19. 00:02:57.34\00:02:59.91 But let's go back and catch the flow just bit, little bit. 00:02:59.94\00:03:02.88 In Chapter 18, we noticed that, 00:03:02.91\00:03:05.88 "God wants us to love the least, 00:03:05.91\00:03:08.82 those who are on the fringes on the edges. 00:03:08.85\00:03:11.55 Even those in the church that may seem to be the lest, 00:03:11.59\00:03:14.89 the less spiritual or the least talented 00:03:14.92\00:03:17.93 or the least capable." 00:03:17.96\00:03:19.29 And part of that loving is how we treat them 00:03:19.33\00:03:22.26 when they slip, when they stumble, 00:03:22.30\00:03:23.63 when there's a lost sheep, you know. 00:03:23.67\00:03:25.77 And he ties in this discussion of church disciple 00:03:25.80\00:03:29.74 in Matthew Chapter 18, 00:03:29.77\00:03:31.67 with a parable about forgiveness. 00:03:31.71\00:03:33.27 Tell us a little bit about that parable. 00:03:33.31\00:03:34.81 You know, Glenn, there is one thing that amazes me. 00:03:34.84\00:03:38.91 God said that through Moses to the people of Israel, 00:03:38.95\00:03:41.52 you'll always have poor people and yourself. 00:03:41.55\00:03:45.69 When you go to the New Testament 00:03:45.72\00:03:47.06 evidently Jesus does something more. 00:03:47.09\00:03:49.96 We will always have people who have spiritual progress. 00:03:49.99\00:03:54.10 We will have in our midst. 00:03:54.10\00:03:55.50 Sometimes they write in the mirror, 00:03:55.53\00:03:56.90 the ones we struggle. 00:03:56.93\00:03:58.37 And the question is how to relate in the church 00:03:58.40\00:04:02.00 that is actually the visible manifestation 00:04:02.04\00:04:05.81 of the kingdom of heaven on earth. 00:04:05.84\00:04:08.18 Actually this is what Matthew 18 is all about is, 00:04:08.21\00:04:13.38 "if we have the people who have the spiritual progress, 00:04:13.42\00:04:16.28 people who fall even in sin." 00:04:16.32\00:04:19.25 Jesus says, "You who are spiritual, 00:04:19.29\00:04:21.36 you're supposed to go and find those people 00:04:21.39\00:04:24.69 and restore them into the fellowship 00:04:24.73\00:04:26.73 of that kingdom of heaven." 00:04:26.76\00:04:30.00 Realizing what Jesus' calling into, 00:04:30.03\00:04:32.80 Peter comes and ask question. 00:04:32.83\00:04:35.10 And in the ancient world as in much of the world today, 00:04:35.14\00:04:38.84 revenge and honor and respect are very high priorities. 00:04:38.87\00:04:42.18 And he comes and he says, 00:04:42.21\00:04:43.55 "Now how many times should I ask a brother to-- 00:04:43.58\00:04:45.91 you know, how many times can I forgive?" 00:04:45.95\00:04:48.12 It says in Matthew Chapter 18 verse 21. 00:04:48.15\00:04:51.62 Peter came up and said to Him, 00:04:51.65\00:04:52.99 "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, 00:04:53.02\00:04:56.59 and I forgive him?" 00:04:56.62\00:04:57.96 So it's about a brother, not someone else. 00:04:57.99\00:04:59.49 But it's--when a brother sins against me 00:04:59.53\00:05:02.23 and Peter gives a suggestion. 00:05:02.26\00:05:04.20 Okay, Glenn, let's keep in mind 00:05:04.23\00:05:06.03 that this is reference to verse 15. That's right. 00:05:06.07\00:05:08.70 You see, if you go to verse 15, 00:05:08.74\00:05:10.57 "if your brother sins," actually in Greek says, 00:05:10.61\00:05:14.31 "against you go and try to save the brother." 00:05:14.34\00:05:20.58 So now Peter says, "so how many times?" 00:05:20.62\00:05:23.49 If the person slips away, if the person sins, 00:05:23.52\00:05:27.02 how many times am I supposed to do it? 00:05:27.06\00:05:29.36 And among the Jewish people in the first century 00:05:29.39\00:05:33.26 there was a teaching believe according to the Rabbis, 00:05:33.29\00:05:36.93 you're supposed to forgive three times. 00:05:36.97\00:05:40.37 And that was generous compared to the Pagans 00:05:40.40\00:05:42.20 which was "eye for an eye." Yes. 00:05:42.24\00:05:43.97 Law of revenge. So they're doing better. 00:05:44.01\00:05:46.57 But Peter, I wanted to be very generous, not three times. 00:05:46.61\00:05:51.88 He said, seven times hoping that 00:05:51.91\00:05:54.58 Jesus will tap on his shoulder and He say, 00:05:54.62\00:05:57.79 "oh, Peter, you are so generous." 00:05:57.82\00:06:00.32 But you know, what was the answer 00:06:00.36\00:06:01.76 that Jesus gave to Peter? 00:06:01.79\00:06:04.26 Well, Jesus responses, 00:06:04.29\00:06:05.69 "I don't say to you seven times but seventy times so." 00:06:05.73\00:06:09.70 I don't know, I have-- something very interesting 00:06:09.73\00:06:15.30 that I discovered because the warning 00:06:15.34\00:06:17.84 that we find here in verse 22 00:06:17.87\00:06:20.88 is really the reflection of Daniel Chapter 9. 00:06:20.91\00:06:25.38 When God used seventy times seven 00:06:25.41\00:06:30.65 as a metaphoric saying of the great forgiveness, 00:06:30.69\00:06:36.39 of course, this is the prophecy 00:06:36.42\00:06:39.59 a day for year, there, there. 00:06:39.63\00:06:41.43 But the very saying, 00:06:41.46\00:06:43.00 the very concept seventy times seven 00:06:43.03\00:06:45.27 refers to the great forgiveness 00:06:45.30\00:06:47.80 that God wanted to show to His people 00:06:47.84\00:06:49.57 and this is exactly what Jesus get his-- 00:06:49.60\00:06:51.64 So when we're tempted to say, "How long should I forgive?" 00:06:51.67\00:06:54.58 Jesus is saying, "Well, look at how long 00:06:54.61\00:06:57.01 God has forgiven you." 00:06:57.05\00:06:58.38 It's a great- It's a God standard. 00:06:58.41\00:06:59.75 It's a great forgiveness. 00:06:59.78\00:07:01.18 And now to illustrate Peter was confused completely. 00:07:01.22\00:07:04.32 I mean can you imagine seven generous? 00:07:04.35\00:07:06.35 Now Jesus is great forgiveness and now we have the parable. 00:07:06.39\00:07:09.62 What is Glenn, parable all about? 00:07:09.66\00:07:11.96 "Therefore the kingdom of heaven 00:07:11.99\00:07:13.43 may be compared to a king 00:07:13.46\00:07:14.76 who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 00:07:14.83\00:07:16.40 When he began the reckoning, 00:07:16.43\00:07:17.93 one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents 00:07:17.97\00:07:20.34 and he could not pay. 00:07:20.37\00:07:21.94 His Lord ordered him to be sold 00:07:21.97\00:07:24.01 with his wife and children all that he had 00:07:24.04\00:07:26.11 and payment to be made. 00:07:26.14\00:07:27.74 So the servant fell on his knees 00:07:27.78\00:07:29.14 and pouring him, Lord have patience with me 00:07:29.18\00:07:31.78 and I will pay you everything. 00:07:31.81\00:07:33.98 And out of pity for him, 00:07:34.02\00:07:35.35 the Lord of that servant released him 00:07:35.38\00:07:37.12 and forgave the debt." 00:07:37.15\00:07:39.05 Boy, if only the story stop there, 00:07:39.09\00:07:40.46 it'd be such a beautiful story. Yeah, fantastic. 00:07:40.49\00:07:42.52 But unfortunately it continues. 00:07:42.56\00:07:44.96 But that same servant, "As he went out, 00:07:44.99\00:07:47.03 came across one of his fellow servants 00:07:47.03\00:07:49.43 who owed him a hundred denarii, 00:07:49.46\00:07:51.07 and seized him by the throat, and said, 'Pay what you owe.' 00:07:51.10\00:07:55.30 So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, 00:07:55.34\00:07:58.11 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' 00:07:58.14\00:08:00.81 But he refused. 00:08:00.84\00:08:02.24 And he went and put him in prison 00:08:02.28\00:08:03.61 until he should pay his debt. 00:08:03.65\00:08:05.38 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, 00:08:05.41\00:08:07.45 they were greatly distressed, 00:08:07.48\00:08:08.82 and they went and reported to their Lord 00:08:08.85\00:08:10.19 all that had taken place. 00:08:10.22\00:08:11.89 Then his Lord summoned him and said to him, 00:08:11.92\00:08:14.36 'You wicked servant! 00:08:14.39\00:08:15.72 I forgave you all that debt because you besought me 00:08:15.76\00:08:18.69 and you should not have mercy on your fellow servant 00:08:18.73\00:08:21.33 as I had mercy on you?' 00:08:21.36\00:08:23.00 And in anger his Lord delivered him to the jailers 00:08:23.03\00:08:25.80 until he should pay all his debt. 00:08:25.83\00:08:27.90 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, 00:08:27.94\00:08:31.07 if you do not forgive your brother from the heart." 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.07 Now we need to remember that parables 00:08:33.11\00:08:34.94 not every detail is an allegory. 00:08:34.98\00:08:37.25 Actually-- God has not liked this. 00:08:37.28\00:08:39.11 Actually verse 35 tell us the purpose. 00:08:39.15\00:08:41.75 What will happen to us 00:08:41.78\00:08:43.42 if we do not forgive our brothers? 00:08:43.45\00:08:45.19 Keep in mind that Peter asked Jesus, 00:08:45.22\00:08:48.92 "how many times should I forgive to my brother?" 00:08:48.96\00:08:52.36 And Jesus moves from the number 00:08:52.39\00:08:55.23 to the practical application. 00:08:55.26\00:08:56.60 By the way, how much did the person, 00:08:56.63\00:09:00.37 the servant owed to his master. 00:09:00.40\00:09:03.37 He says, "ten thousand talents." 00:09:03.41\00:09:05.94 Please, so many times when we read the Bible, 00:09:05.97\00:09:10.68 we--it's not clear to ask what meaning of that, 00:09:10.71\00:09:14.38 ten thousand talents. 00:09:14.42\00:09:16.05 In the time of Jesus, Galilee, Judea 00:09:16.08\00:09:20.56 and another territory known as Idumea, 00:09:20.59\00:09:23.59 altogether, okay, their taxes were 600 talents. 00:09:23.63\00:09:31.47 Here we're talking about 00:09:31.50\00:09:32.83 ten thousand talents how many? 00:09:32.87\00:09:35.44 How many years of taxes just from that territory? 00:09:35.47\00:09:38.51 It's something that the person, 00:09:38.54\00:09:41.61 one individual cannot pay. It's an impossible pay. 00:09:41.64\00:09:44.18 It's an impossible pay. All right. 00:09:44.21\00:09:45.58 But you see, another person owe to this servant 00:09:45.61\00:09:51.09 whom it was forgiven, 100 denarii, 00:09:51.12\00:09:55.36 denarius actually was a daily wage. 00:09:55.39\00:09:59.26 One hundred, we're talking about three months of salary. 00:09:59.29\00:10:02.53 For one person compare to the taxes of a whole region. 00:10:02.56\00:10:05.10 For one person is. 00:10:05.13\00:10:06.47 So Jesus tried something to tell us here is 00:10:06.50\00:10:10.14 the person was forgiven, 00:10:10.17\00:10:11.51 something that he could not repay at all. 00:10:11.54\00:10:15.28 It was forgiven to him. 00:10:15.31\00:10:17.81 On another side he could not forgive to the person 00:10:17.85\00:10:19.98 something that was really not too much. 00:10:20.02\00:10:22.55 It was too much. It was series. 00:10:22.58\00:10:24.42 Jesus never diminishes. 00:10:24.45\00:10:26.09 And you know, put less than significance of that. 00:10:26.12\00:10:30.13 It is that. 00:10:30.16\00:10:31.49 But in comparison, what God has done for me. 00:10:31.53\00:10:35.73 And what I'm supposed to forgive to my brother, 00:10:35.76\00:10:39.30 keep in mind, expression is my brother or my sister is, 00:10:39.33\00:10:42.64 it cannot be compared with what heart did to me. 00:10:42.67\00:10:45.11 So let's make sure we catch the picture 00:10:45.14\00:10:46.78 and that is that our debt to God, 00:10:46.81\00:10:50.58 is so immense we can never repay it. 00:10:50.61\00:10:53.35 Glenn, you know--But sometimes the little offenses 00:10:53.38\00:10:55.78 that someone does to us, in comparison-- 00:10:55.82\00:10:59.45 You see, we're talking about the little offences. 00:10:59.49\00:11:01.86 There is no offence, 00:11:01.89\00:11:04.33 that my brother can do to me so great. 00:11:04.36\00:11:08.63 In comparison, you see, Glenn, 00:11:08.66\00:11:10.73 I can owe to you $1,000. 00:11:10.77\00:11:12.60 Boy, $1,000 is big, huh? It's your wish-- 00:11:12.63\00:11:14.74 It's one cheque, it's one cheque that-- 00:11:14.77\00:11:16.67 that we receive in salary and it's big. 00:11:16.71\00:11:19.67 But can you imagine, and understand 00:11:19.71\00:11:21.04 that somebody gave me one million dollars 00:11:21.08\00:11:25.28 then $1,000 really it's not the big deal at all. 00:11:25.31\00:11:29.72 See when we focus on ourselves in the church 00:11:29.75\00:11:32.35 on the issues what people to do to me, 00:11:32.39\00:11:34.42 it's a big deal. 00:11:34.46\00:11:35.79 But when I focus on God, when I focus on Christ, 00:11:35.82\00:11:38.63 what Christ did to me, how much I'm forgiven? 00:11:38.66\00:11:42.20 Then all those offences, they really become 00:11:42.23\00:11:45.27 almost insignificant in the light what God did for me. 00:11:45.30\00:11:48.70 We need to move on, but let's hold the thought 00:11:48.74\00:11:51.57 that also remember this is tidy 00:11:51.61\00:11:54.34 and with how we treat those in the church 00:11:54.38\00:11:56.24 in terms of discipline, those who have slipped, 00:11:56.28\00:11:58.38 those who have not followed faithfully. 00:11:58.41\00:12:02.45 Let's have that forgiving spirit. 00:12:02.48\00:12:03.92 Okay, Ranko, we've got-- If everybody in the church 00:12:03.95\00:12:05.69 thinks how much I am forgiven, 00:12:05.72\00:12:07.59 we would not have too many problems 00:12:07.62\00:12:10.13 among the members of the community of believers. Yes. 00:12:10.16\00:12:13.80 Now Jesus moves from Galilee and enters into Judea. 00:12:13.83\00:12:17.77 So we're in Chapter 19? Yes. 00:12:17.80\00:12:19.67 And the Pharisees come. 00:12:19.70\00:12:22.44 We're gonna come to the question in a moment, 00:12:22.47\00:12:24.44 but give us a little background. 00:12:24.47\00:12:25.81 They come with a question of Jesus about divorce. 00:12:25.84\00:12:29.68 What's the background that we should know about it? 00:12:29.71\00:12:31.68 Yeah, Chapter 19 begins, 00:12:31.71\00:12:33.48 "when Jesus had finished these words," 00:12:33.52\00:12:35.65 do you remember that? 00:12:35.68\00:12:37.02 It marks the fourth block of the Gospel of Matthew. 00:12:37.05\00:12:41.39 You know, in the first century among Jews-- 00:12:41.42\00:12:45.73 you know, the Jewish people always have the rabbis, 00:12:45.76\00:12:48.56 the rabbi, that rabbi dies 00:12:48.60\00:12:51.27 the most prominent people of him, 00:12:51.30\00:12:54.47 he would succeed him 00:12:54.50\00:12:56.00 and he would be the next rabbi et cetera. 00:12:56.04\00:12:57.81 However in the first century 00:12:57.84\00:12:59.17 there was something very interesting 00:12:59.21\00:13:01.01 and with the Jewish people, 00:13:01.04\00:13:02.88 they had pair of rabbis for certain period of time. 00:13:02.91\00:13:08.65 And when Jesus was born, and when Jesus was child, 00:13:08.68\00:13:14.09 there was--there two rabbis, pair of rabbis, 00:13:14.12\00:13:16.96 one was Shammai and another one was Hillel. 00:13:16.99\00:13:21.43 They were very prominence, especially Hillel. 00:13:21.46\00:13:23.43 Hillel was liberal. Shammai was very conservative. 00:13:23.47\00:13:27.84 This is what the Torah says, and let's hold it. 00:13:27.87\00:13:31.97 And people were coming to Hillel and asking him, 00:13:32.01\00:13:36.11 "Can I divorce my wife?" 00:13:36.14\00:13:37.48 He said, you know, "you can divorce your wife, 00:13:37.51\00:13:39.61 even if you are displeased 00:13:39.65\00:13:41.82 because of the lunch that should prepared to you." 00:13:41.85\00:13:44.02 And the reason, you're free to do it. 00:13:44.05\00:13:47.36 Shammai, he said, "No. 00:13:47.39\00:13:51.23 It can only be very serious reason, the adultery. 00:13:51.26\00:13:54.83 You can go and divorce your wife." 00:13:54.86\00:13:58.30 So you're talking about the disciples, 00:13:58.33\00:14:00.97 the pupils, they were debating among themselves. 00:14:01.00\00:14:04.47 So now the question that Jesus was asked 00:14:04.51\00:14:08.78 was actually attempting Jesus in which side He will side, 00:14:08.81\00:14:13.21 we have to understand this context 00:14:13.25\00:14:14.72 and we'll see more and more in few minutes-- 00:14:14.75\00:14:16.35 So the Pharisees come to find out 00:14:16.38\00:14:18.42 which school of thought do you agree with 00:14:18.45\00:14:20.06 and it's a trap. 00:14:20.09\00:14:21.42 Because either way his answer would go, they would get him. 00:14:21.46\00:14:23.36 And they could--they could argue with Jesus. Yes. 00:14:23.39\00:14:26.86 So let's find out more about how that trap, 00:14:26.90\00:14:28.76 that question works and Jesus intriguing answer 00:14:28.80\00:14:31.90 when we come back right after our break. 00:14:31.93\00:14:33.50 We'll be right back. 00:14:33.54\00:14:35.44
