Hi, welcome to the Books of the Book series here on 3ABN. 00:00:21.12\00:00:24.05 We're exploring the gospel of Mathew. 00:00:24.09\00:00:26.52 It's been a delightful experience 00:00:26.55\00:00:28.19 so far getting into scripture seeking God's 00:00:28.22\00:00:31.46 word, understanding Him. 00:00:31.49\00:00:33.36 I want to thank our teacher 00:00:33.40\00:00:34.73 Ranko Stefanovic, for being with us. 00:00:34.73\00:00:36.16 Ranko, it's being great to have you with us. 00:00:36.20\00:00:38.10 You're professor of New Testament 00:00:38.13\00:00:39.47 at Andrew's University for Theological Seminary. 00:00:39.50\00:00:42.17 It's wonderful to study scripture together, isn't it? 00:00:42.20\00:00:44.21 Yes, Glenn and it's a great joy 00:00:44.24\00:00:47.88 to be with you here to participate in this program. 00:00:47.91\00:00:51.01 You teach at Andrews University 00:00:51.05\00:00:52.68 there in the department of Religion 00:00:52.71\00:00:55.28 and I know that you've a great passion for ministry. 00:00:55.32\00:00:59.09 It's just a joy. Let's get right into God's word. 00:00:59.12\00:01:01.99 First we wanna seek the Lord. 00:01:02.02\00:01:03.89 We need His guidance. 00:01:03.93\00:01:05.26 So let's pray together. 00:01:05.29\00:01:06.83 Father, before we open Your word, 00:01:06.86\00:01:08.80 before we open our mouths and talk about it. 00:01:08.83\00:01:11.47 We wanna be sure that we're in harmony 00:01:11.50\00:01:13.23 with You, so we come to You now. 00:01:13.27\00:01:15.77 Take anything that might pull us away from You 00:01:15.80\00:01:19.17 and God we just wanna surrender our lives. 00:01:19.21\00:01:21.54 We commit ourselves to You as we study 00:01:21.58\00:01:23.91 Your word once again, in Jesus name, amen. 00:01:23.95\00:01:28.58 Well, Ranko, we've been looking at the movement 00:01:28.62\00:01:31.19 of the story of Jesus in the gospel according to Mathew. 00:01:31.22\00:01:34.26 And we've brought our guests 00:01:34.29\00:01:38.03 and our visitors and our listeners, 00:01:38.06\00:01:40.86 our viewers all up to Chapter 16. 00:01:40.90\00:01:44.10 What's the story been so far? 00:01:44.13\00:01:45.70 Tell us about the Jesus 00:01:45.73\00:01:47.07 that we've met in Mathew up to Chapter 16. 00:01:47.10\00:01:49.74 Yes, the very beginning we saw the Jesus 00:01:49.77\00:01:53.11 began His ministry by preaching 00:01:53.14\00:01:56.48 and teaching people in synagogues. 00:01:56.51\00:02:00.12 But evidently His teaching 00:02:00.15\00:02:02.28 did not side well with the Pharisees. 00:02:02.32\00:02:05.65 And in some later period of Jesus' ministry, 00:02:05.69\00:02:10.03 we have a strong opposition 00:02:10.06\00:02:12.33 of the Pharisees with His teaching. 00:02:12.36\00:02:14.50 So we saw that Jesus moves to the hill area in the open, 00:02:14.56\00:02:19.27 open field there teaching people. 00:02:19.30\00:02:21.67 But the Pharisees are there watching Him constantly. 00:02:21.70\00:02:24.77 Then we know that John the Baptists was beheaded. 00:02:24.81\00:02:29.04 Evidently, it was very, very hard on Jesus, 00:02:29.08\00:02:31.28 and Jesus saw the death of John the Baptist, 00:02:31.31\00:02:35.25 His own death that He anticipated to come. 00:02:35.28\00:02:38.79 And then we saw that feeding 5,000 people 00:02:38.82\00:02:42.49 and the attempt of Satan, okay to track side Jesus 00:02:42.52\00:02:48.33 from His determination to go, to die on the cross, 00:02:48.36\00:02:52.77 to die on behalf of human beings. 00:02:52.80\00:02:54.64 So, from that time on we see the opposition is increasing. 00:02:54.67\00:02:58.41 Threat is everywhere. 00:02:58.44\00:03:00.38 Spies are everywhere and we see Jesus 00:03:00.41\00:03:05.01 coming into open confrontation with the Pharisees. 00:03:05.05\00:03:08.18 Actually that opposition was initiated by the Pharisees. 00:03:08.22\00:03:11.52 Okay and it is with that thought 00:03:11.55\00:03:14.19 we are now coming to Chapter 16. 00:03:14.22\00:03:18.19 As we begin Chapter 16, Ranko. 00:03:18.23\00:03:20.60 The first verse tells us the Pharisees and Sadducees came. 00:03:20.63\00:03:23.70 It'd probably be good for us to pause 00:03:23.73\00:03:25.43 and make sure we kind of recognize these two groups. 00:03:25.47\00:03:27.90 tell us, Pharisees, Sadducees, 00:03:27.94\00:03:30.44 are they are quite different. 00:03:30.47\00:03:31.81 Tell us about them. 00:03:31.84\00:03:33.17 Actually at the time of Jesus in 1st Century. 00:03:33.21\00:03:36.44 They're two religious parties if we can call them. 00:03:36.48\00:03:40.48 Some people call them sects there in Palestine 00:03:40.52\00:03:44.32 of which Pharisees and Sadducees were probably 00:03:44.35\00:03:48.62 the most prominent ones. 00:03:48.66\00:03:52.73 Pharisees was the group 00:03:52.76\00:03:57.40 that had the strong determination 00:03:57.43\00:04:02.54 to study the will of God, the Torah, okay. 00:04:02.57\00:04:06.68 And in the same way to instruct 00:04:06.71\00:04:08.34 the people into the will of God. 00:04:08.38\00:04:11.08 So they started they dedicated themselves to study 00:04:11.11\00:04:14.05 the Torah and they went all around 00:04:14.08\00:04:17.09 and most of them were laymen. 00:04:17.12\00:04:18.75 They went all around to instruct 00:04:18.79\00:04:20.76 the people and they did not want 00:04:20.79\00:04:23.22 the Babylonian exile to be repeated. 00:04:23.26\00:04:25.29 Now, there was another threat its Rome 00:04:25.33\00:04:27.73 there and they thought that they're faithful God 00:04:27.76\00:04:30.53 and entire Israel comeback to God and to the Torah. 00:04:30.57\00:04:33.54 That God will somehow visit His people and deliver them. 00:04:33.57\00:04:38.37 They really were faithful to this scripture 00:04:38.41\00:04:42.01 most of them where good people. 00:04:42.04\00:04:45.01 However there is special group of Pharisees 00:04:45.05\00:04:48.58 that were there in Jerusalem, they were wealthy ones 00:04:48.62\00:04:51.19 and they were not the ones 00:04:51.22\00:04:54.49 who are positive characters in the four gospels. 00:04:54.52\00:04:59.16 Sadducees was a priestly class. 00:04:59.19\00:05:03.26 Not all priests were Sadducees, okay. 00:05:03.30\00:05:06.90 Okay. But all Sadducees were priests. 00:05:06.94\00:05:09.47 They were wealthy ones. 00:05:09.50\00:05:11.07 By the way when we read the gospel says, 00:05:11.11\00:05:14.21 they really are stealing money from people. 00:05:14.24\00:05:16.78 They use advantage of the temple 00:05:16.81\00:05:19.31 they develop entire business there around the temple. 00:05:19.35\00:05:22.88 They were very liberal in the teachings. 00:05:22.92\00:05:25.09 All their goal was to protect their wealth 00:05:25.12\00:05:28.26 and to take as much money from people as possible. 00:05:28.29\00:05:32.46 The two parties they did not like each other. 00:05:32.49\00:05:36.70 But there is something very interesting is. 00:05:36.73\00:05:39.00 In their effort to destroy Jesus, 00:05:39.03\00:05:41.70 see these two groups are mentioned here together. 00:05:41.74\00:05:45.24 Now the Sadducees, they compromise more with Romans 00:05:45.27\00:05:50.11 in order to keep their system going, 00:05:50.15\00:05:52.75 their scheme that they had of the temple. 00:05:52.78\00:05:54.65 But they were centered more in Jerusalem. 00:05:54.68\00:05:56.85 That's why they don't have as much of a conflict 00:05:56.89\00:05:58.82 with Jesus early in His ministry. 00:05:58.85\00:06:00.86 But Jesus was now became a threat to them, 00:06:00.89\00:06:03.46 because they're afraid if something 00:06:03.49\00:06:05.89 happens because of Jesus teachings and the Romans 00:06:05.93\00:06:08.46 come to punish the-- people etc., who'll suffer? 00:06:08.50\00:06:11.03 They'll suffer because all their wealth will be gone. 00:06:11.07\00:06:13.47 So He's threatening. 00:06:13.50\00:06:14.84 He's threatening to them. 00:06:14.87\00:06:16.20 Jesus' teaching present a threat. 00:06:16.24\00:06:17.81 The same was with the Pharisees. 00:06:17.84\00:06:19.17 They were rich Pharisees, they're from Jerusalem. 00:06:19.21\00:06:21.94 So these two opposing groups unite to come after Jesus. 00:06:21.98\00:06:25.55 Unite together. They didn't like but the common 00:06:25.58\00:06:28.85 course actually united them together. 00:06:28.88\00:06:31.82 All right where should we go in Chapter 16? 00:06:31.85\00:06:34.06 Yeah, we go Chapter 16 00:06:34.09\00:06:35.72 and you'll see that we don't want now 00:06:35.76\00:06:37.69 to go detail by detail, but they are there Jesus 00:06:37.73\00:06:42.10 and asking question after the question, 00:06:42.13\00:06:44.13 group after group trying to confuse Jesus. 00:06:44.17\00:06:47.17 You know, somehow that they have a material later 00:06:47.20\00:06:50.37 to accuse him, how He was deceiving people. 00:06:50.41\00:06:53.51 How He was against the Mosaic Law etc. 00:06:53.54\00:06:57.05 But praise God Jesus was always able to respond to them. 00:06:57.08\00:07:01.12 So they were not able really to hard upon Jesus there. 00:07:01.15\00:07:05.12 It's interesting that He tells His disciples. 00:07:05.15\00:07:08.36 Verse 6 of Chapter 16, 00:07:08.39\00:07:10.79 "Take heed and beware of the leaven 00:07:10.83\00:07:12.76 of the Pharisees and Sadducees." 00:07:12.79\00:07:15.03 So He's giving a warning to His disciples. 00:07:15.06\00:07:17.80 These religious leaders especially Pharisees, 00:07:17.83\00:07:19.83 they were well looked up to. 00:07:19.87\00:07:22.04 So, Glenn, do you remember that when Jesus 00:07:22.07\00:07:25.37 gave that warning about blasphemy 00:07:25.41\00:07:29.94 against the Holy Spirit and part to bless in. 00:07:29.98\00:07:31.78 It was in the context 00:07:31.81\00:07:33.18 of the confrontation with the Pharisees. 00:07:33.21\00:07:36.28 So from that time on really the Pharisees are sinking, 00:07:36.32\00:07:38.95 sinking there in their unbelief. 00:07:38.99\00:07:41.46 And now with the text that you just read Jesus 00:07:41.49\00:07:44.99 makes the public statement of other Pharisees. 00:07:45.03\00:07:47.46 Jesus reveals the intentions. 00:07:47.50\00:07:50.47 He is not sparing them any longer. 00:07:50.50\00:07:53.07 So you see the confrontation is everywhere. 00:07:53.10\00:07:56.87 Threat to Jesus is everywhere. 00:07:56.91\00:07:59.64 John the Baptist is there. 00:07:59.67\00:08:01.51 By the way if we go back Ezekiel Chapter 14, Glenn. 00:08:01.54\00:08:05.28 What do you read there in verses 1 and 2, Chapter 14? 00:08:05.31\00:08:11.45 "At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports 00:08:11.49\00:08:13.82 about Jesus and he said to his servants, 00:08:13.86\00:08:16.02 "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! 00:08:16.06\00:08:18.93 Therefore these powers are at work" 00:08:18.96\00:08:21.23 Okay, so, what we have even Herod 00:08:21.26\00:08:23.90 is becoming interest in Jesus. 00:08:23.93\00:08:25.63 This is Herod who killed John the Baptist. 00:08:25.67\00:08:30.51 Evidently now he is seeking Jesus 00:08:30.54\00:08:32.21 because keeping in mind his territory thousand, 00:08:32.24\00:08:35.14 thousand people are following Jesus. 00:08:35.18\00:08:37.31 So Jesus is threat to him. 00:08:37.35\00:08:39.45 And evidently Jesus became concerned about His ministry. 00:08:39.48\00:08:44.95 He knew that Satan is messing up. 00:08:44.99\00:08:48.26 So Jesus now decides to do something. 00:08:48.29\00:08:51.79 And this is actually the beginning 00:08:51.83\00:08:53.19 of our new section that we have. 00:08:53.23\00:08:54.96 I will really like to ask you Glenn, 00:08:55.00\00:08:56.53 if you can read verses 13 to 20 of Chapter 16. 00:08:56.56\00:08:59.60 And here we find one of the greatest questions 00:08:59.63\00:09:02.04 that can ever be asked. 00:09:02.07\00:09:03.41 Great questions, it's a very significant important text. 00:09:03.44\00:09:05.31 The Christians have debated about this text. 00:09:05.34\00:09:07.98 Many views were developed on base of this text. 00:09:08.01\00:09:11.78 We would like to take some time. 00:09:11.81\00:09:13.62 "When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, 00:09:13.65\00:09:16.65 He asked His disciples, saying, 00:09:16.69\00:09:18.65 Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am? 00:09:18.69\00:09:23.53 So they said." Well, "Some say John the Baptist, 00:09:23.56\00:09:26.09 some say, Elijah, and others Jeremiah 00:09:26.13\00:09:28.73 or one of the prophets. 00:09:28.76\00:09:30.50 He said to them, But who do you say that I am? 00:09:30.53\00:09:34.50 Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, 00:09:34.54\00:09:37.67 the Son of the living God. 00:09:37.71\00:09:39.41 Jesus answered and said to him, 00:09:39.44\00:09:40.88 Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, 00:09:40.91\00:09:43.68 for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, 00:09:43.71\00:09:46.15 but My Father who is in heaven. 00:09:46.18\00:09:48.48 I also say to you that you are Peter, 00:09:48.52\00:09:50.65 and on this rock I will build My church, 00:09:50.69\00:09:52.79 and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 00:09:52.82\00:09:56.29 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, 00:09:56.32\00:09:58.73 whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, 00:09:58.76\00:10:01.90 whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 00:10:01.93\00:10:04.63 Then He commanded His disciples 00:10:04.67\00:10:06.20 that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Messiah." 00:10:06.23\00:10:09.54 Okay, in the light of the background 00:10:09.57\00:10:12.17 that we just described. 00:10:12.21\00:10:14.31 Jesus decides to go, 00:10:14.34\00:10:15.81 He says to the district of Caesarea Philippi. 00:10:15.84\00:10:20.42 Philippi. Okay, let us explain a little bit 00:10:20.45\00:10:21.78 about this territory, this is very important. 00:10:21.82\00:10:24.52 You know, Herod the great the one who tried 00:10:24.55\00:10:26.86 to kill Jesus when He was born. 00:10:26.89\00:10:29.29 After his death because of his bad reputation 00:10:29.32\00:10:33.26 that Herod had the Romans 00:10:33.29\00:10:34.93 did not want to appoint one of his sons 00:10:34.93\00:10:38.27 to be the ruler of entire Palestine as Herod was. 00:10:38.30\00:10:42.24 They actually divide Palestine into three major 00:10:42.27\00:10:45.71 parts in among his three sons. 00:10:45.74\00:10:49.44 So we have Archelaus who was there in Judea. 00:10:49.48\00:10:53.98 He very soon was replaced by procreators. 00:10:54.02\00:10:59.19 Then there Galilee was actually--he's oldest, 00:10:59.22\00:11:04.69 second oldest son which was Herod Antipas. 00:11:04.73\00:11:07.56 This is the one that we just read in verse 14. 00:11:07.60\00:11:10.63 But there is the third you know, 00:11:10.67\00:11:12.00 who killed John the Baptist but the third son 00:11:12.03\00:11:14.90 which was Herod Phillip. 00:11:14.94\00:11:16.54 He was completely there on the territory of modern Syria. 00:11:16.57\00:11:19.44 He was in that territory. 00:11:19.47\00:11:22.01 He was completely different person 00:11:22.04\00:11:24.45 from the rest of Herod's. 00:11:24.48\00:11:25.81 He was very peaceful ruler. 00:11:25.85\00:11:28.55 So many times I mean several times 00:11:28.58\00:11:31.32 when Jesus experienced threat, 00:11:31.35\00:11:34.99 when Jesus needed some rest, to rest in peace. 00:11:35.02\00:11:40.03 Jesus would go here to this territory to little bit relax. 00:11:40.06\00:11:44.00 Jesus needed some times you know for Himself. 00:11:44.03\00:11:48.37 And that's evidently reason 00:11:48.40\00:11:51.14 in view of the threat all around Jesus. 00:11:51.17\00:11:53.78 Jesus decided to go there to Caesarea Philippi 00:11:53.81\00:11:58.98 to be alone with His disciples 00:11:59.01\00:12:01.72 there to spend some restful time there. 00:12:01.75\00:12:04.02 And this question that He asked the disciples. 00:12:04.05\00:12:06.32 Who do you say that I am? 00:12:06.35\00:12:07.69 I know, I know for me personally 00:12:07.72\00:12:09.06 that was probably the greatest life question, 00:12:09.09\00:12:11.83 I've to think through. 00:12:11.86\00:12:13.43 As a young man I remember pondering who is Jesus? 00:12:13.46\00:12:18.20 Is He God? Is He who he says He is? 00:12:18.23\00:12:21.90 Do I believe His word? 00:12:21.94\00:12:23.54 This is the essential question. 00:12:23.57\00:12:25.17 Is there enough evidence to accept Him as my Savior? 00:12:25.21\00:12:27.84 And the disciples had to go on record. 00:12:27.88\00:12:29.74 And of course, Peter speaks up. 00:12:29.78\00:12:31.88 Yeah, you say, who the people would say that I am. 00:12:31.91\00:12:36.02 We saw Herod said, he's the John the Baptist. 00:12:36.05\00:12:38.72 Other people you know, they said some of the prophets. 00:12:38.75\00:12:42.29 But then Jesus says to His disciples 00:12:42.32\00:12:43.86 this is what the people say about me. 00:12:43.89\00:12:46.80 But what do you really? 00:12:46.83\00:12:48.36 Keep in mind, we are now approaching 00:12:48.40\00:12:50.83 to those final days of Jesus' ministry. 00:12:50.87\00:12:54.34 We will see that verse 21. 00:12:54.37\00:12:57.37 It's actually the point from which Jesus 00:12:57.41\00:13:00.41 is now going to Jerusalem to die. 00:13:00.44\00:13:01.78 Just we are talking about the last few weeks 00:13:01.81\00:13:03.91 of Jesus' ministry. Keep in mind. 00:13:03.95\00:13:06.28 Jesus is about to die. 00:13:06.31\00:13:09.12 After His death there is ascension to heaven. 00:13:09.15\00:13:12.79 Jesus will leave His disciples. 00:13:12.82\00:13:14.66 The disciples are supposed to continue His ministry, 00:13:14.69\00:13:18.29 so that Jesus want to be clear 00:13:18.33\00:13:21.60 with them that they know who He is. 00:13:21.63\00:13:24.47 So He's asking them. 00:13:24.50\00:13:26.27 So what do you say, that I am? 00:13:26.30\00:13:28.50 No, it's not enough just to say, 00:13:28.54\00:13:31.11 Jesus was a good man. 00:13:31.14\00:13:32.77 He was a great teacher as Jesus 00:13:32.81\00:13:35.68 was something more than a good man, 00:13:35.71\00:13:38.01 something more than what a teacher is. 00:13:38.05\00:13:40.95 And the question that Jesus asked His disciples, 00:13:40.98\00:13:43.79 He's asking to each one of us today. 00:13:43.82\00:13:45.82 Exactly and the answer you were the Christ, Messiah. 00:13:45.85\00:13:49.09 What do you say that I am? 00:13:49.12\00:13:50.69 Doesn't matter what other people say. 00:13:50.73\00:13:52.13 Is it your conviction? What do you say that I am? 00:13:52.16\00:13:54.86 And this word, Christ meaning messiah, 00:13:54.93\00:13:56.73 the son of a living God. 00:13:56.77\00:13:58.10 So Peter gives a good answer. 00:13:58.13\00:13:59.80 Yes. It's a great answer. 00:13:59.83\00:14:01.90 I want to hear what Jesus has to say about Peter's answer. 00:14:01.94\00:14:04.31 We're gonna be right back after a break to explore 00:14:04.34\00:14:06.57 one of the most important passages 00:14:06.61\00:14:08.64 in this section of Mathew. 00:14:08.68\00:14:10.01 We'll be right back after the break. 00:14:10.05\00:14:11.45
