Welcome back. We're exploring Matthew Chapter 14, 00:00:01.33\00:00:03.57 in the book of the Bible series here. 00:00:03.60\00:00:05.57 Ranko, we've talked about Jesus' compassion 00:00:05.60\00:00:07.47 for the multitudes, but He also cared about individuals. 00:00:07.50\00:00:10.87 Yes. Actually we already mentioned before the disciples 00:00:10.91\00:00:15.24 was very strange bunch of people. 00:00:15.28\00:00:18.41 They all had different issues and problems. 00:00:18.45\00:00:20.45 Their main interest was who will be 00:00:20.48\00:00:21.92 the first in the kingdom of God, et cetera, 00:00:21.95\00:00:24.45 and what the kind of patience, Jesus show towards them. 00:00:24.49\00:00:28.22 And it is actually the love of Jesus 00:00:28.26\00:00:31.23 that transformed their lives and these bunch of people, 00:00:31.26\00:00:34.83 I mean...It's-- they are actually 00:00:34.86\00:00:39.77 the core of the Christian church, 00:00:39.80\00:00:41.14 the foundation of the Christian church. 00:00:41.17\00:00:42.64 They are a lot like us 00:00:42.67\00:00:44.01 with their problems and their issues. 00:00:44.04\00:00:45.37 And we have the story of Peter, 00:00:45.41\00:00:47.01 who--a very familiar story who is drowning 00:00:47.04\00:00:50.31 and he cries out Lord save me. 00:00:50.35\00:00:52.65 Ranko, does God ever ignore that cry, Lord saved me? 00:00:52.68\00:00:56.92 Oh, I can say about my personal life, 00:00:56.95\00:01:00.56 how many times I was sinking. 00:01:00.59\00:01:02.66 And it was by my fault. 00:01:04.86\00:01:08.23 And when I cried to God, the Lord helped me, boy, 00:01:08.26\00:01:11.50 he's always, he's always there. 00:01:11.53\00:01:14.14 He hears the prayers of God's people. 00:01:14.17\00:01:16.64 And I would like to tell the viewers, 00:01:16.67\00:01:20.14 whatever your problem in life is, 00:01:20.18\00:01:22.84 that whatever that sinking means for you, 00:01:22.88\00:01:26.21 when you turn to God-- Yes. 00:01:26.25\00:01:27.92 And you ask for help, believe me your prayer 00:01:27.95\00:01:30.82 will not be left unanswered. Amen. 00:01:30.85\00:01:33.82 That's the God we serve. 00:01:33.86\00:01:35.42 Let's go on to Chapter 15, Ranko. 00:01:35.46\00:01:38.23 Let's explore a little bit the central issue 00:01:38.26\00:01:40.80 seems to be issues of tradition, 00:01:40.83\00:01:42.63 defilement, and so forth. 00:01:42.66\00:01:44.40 Help us understand that. 00:01:44.43\00:01:45.77 Actually it is interesting what just happened 00:01:45.80\00:01:48.00 just prior to that is Jesus feeds 5,000 people 00:01:48.04\00:01:53.84 with few loaves of bread and little fish. 00:01:53.88\00:01:57.01 If I'm there, I would really say, 00:01:57.05\00:02:01.05 this is demonstration of God's power. Yeah. 00:02:01.08\00:02:03.82 But you remember we were talking about the Pharisees. 00:02:03.85\00:02:07.26 They were breaking their relationship 00:02:07.29\00:02:08.62 with the Holy Spirit. 00:02:08.66\00:02:09.99 They were sinking deeper and deeper in their unbelief. 00:02:10.03\00:02:13.80 They're not looking about miracle of Jesus 00:02:13.83\00:02:15.83 as demonstration of that divine power. 00:02:15.86\00:02:19.37 They try to find something else. 00:02:19.40\00:02:21.27 So I would like you learn, if you can read from verse 1 00:02:21.30\00:02:23.87 as long as you can, then we will talk about that. Okay. 00:02:23.91\00:02:27.51 Its evidence that every part of God's revelation 00:02:27.54\00:02:30.85 through Jesus they're resistant. 00:02:30.88\00:02:32.28 They're resistant, yes. 00:02:32.31\00:02:34.28 Matthew Chapter 15 verse 1. 00:02:34.32\00:02:36.38 "Then the scribes and Pharisees, 00:02:36.42\00:02:37.75 who were from Jerusalem, came to Jesus saying, 00:02:37.79\00:02:40.32 why do your disciples transgress 00:02:40.36\00:02:42.72 the tradition of the elders? 00:02:42.76\00:02:44.79 For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread." 00:02:44.83\00:02:47.40 Glenn, can I interrupt you here for a while. 00:02:47.40\00:02:49.90 I don't know is the simply speculations, 00:02:49.93\00:02:52.37 but their belief is based on the reality. 00:02:52.40\00:02:54.37 When did the Pharisees see that disciples 00:02:54.40\00:02:59.41 eating with unwashed bread? 00:02:59.44\00:03:00.84 I believe it was a death miracle. 00:03:00.88\00:03:02.98 You remember that Jesus broke the bread, 00:03:03.01\00:03:04.88 gave to the disciples they had to distribute to people 00:03:04.91\00:03:07.02 and they were eating there, I believe, 00:03:07.05\00:03:09.02 I believe that this is a reflection, 00:03:09.05\00:03:10.59 maybe I'm wrong but I see strong connection here. 00:03:10.62\00:03:13.96 They don't look what Jesus was doing, 00:03:13.99\00:03:16.22 what God was doing for those people. 00:03:16.26\00:03:18.16 They were interested in something else, 00:03:18.19\00:03:19.96 and this is very, very sad situation. 00:03:20.00\00:03:21.63 You've got a strong point. 00:03:21.66\00:03:23.00 There's always someone to criticize your miracle. 00:03:23.03\00:03:24.53 Of course, of course. All right. 00:03:24.57\00:03:26.47 He said to them, "Why do you also transgress 00:03:26.50\00:03:29.37 the commandments of God, because of your tradition. 00:03:29.40\00:03:31.94 For God commanded, saying, 00:03:31.97\00:03:33.61 Honor your father and your mother, 00:03:33.64\00:03:35.61 and He who curseth his father and mother, 00:03:35.64\00:03:38.08 let him be put to death. 00:03:38.11\00:03:39.58 But you say, whoever says to his mother or father, 00:03:39.61\00:03:42.62 whatever profit you might have received 00:03:42.65\00:03:44.32 from me is a gift to God. 00:03:44.35\00:03:46.55 Then he need not honor his father and mother. 00:03:46.59\00:03:49.42 Thus you have made the commandment of God 00:03:49.46\00:03:51.43 of no effect by your tradition." 00:03:51.46\00:03:55.16 Until verse-- Hypocrites. 00:03:55.20\00:03:57.03 Well did Isaiah prophesy about you saying, 00:03:57.07\00:03:59.07 "These people draw near to me with their mouth, 00:03:59.10\00:04:02.27 and honor me with their lips, 00:04:02.30\00:04:03.94 but their heart is far from me and in vain they worship me, 00:04:03.97\00:04:07.18 teaching as doctrines the commandments of men." 00:04:07.21\00:04:10.35 When he had called the multitude to Himself, 00:04:10.38\00:04:13.35 he said to them, "hear and understand, 00:04:13.38\00:04:16.22 not what goes into the mouth defiles a man, 00:04:16.25\00:04:18.52 but what comes out of the mouth, 00:04:18.55\00:04:19.89 and this defiles a man." 00:04:19.92\00:04:21.79 Then His disciples came and said to Him, 00:04:21.82\00:04:23.99 "Do You know that the Pharisees were offended 00:04:24.03\00:04:26.33 when they heard these sayings?" 00:04:26.36\00:04:27.66 But He answered and said, 00:04:27.73\00:04:29.16 "Every plant which my Father has planted will be uprooted-- 00:04:29.20\00:04:32.03 has not planted will be uprooted. 00:04:32.07\00:04:34.07 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. 00:04:34.10\00:04:37.74 And if the blind leads the blind 00:04:37.77\00:04:39.34 both will fall into the ditch." Until verse 20. 00:04:39.37\00:04:42.91 Then Peter answered and said to Him, 00:04:42.94\00:04:44.48 "Explain this miracle to us." 00:04:44.51\00:04:46.72 Excuse me this parable, back to the parables again. 00:04:46.75\00:04:49.85 So Jesus said, "Are you also still without understanding? 00:04:49.88\00:04:54.19 Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth 00:04:54.22\00:04:56.73 goes into the stomach and is eliminated, 00:04:56.76\00:04:58.56 but those things which come out of the mouth 00:04:58.59\00:05:01.16 and come from the heart, they defile a man. 00:05:01.20\00:05:04.40 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, 00:05:04.43\00:05:07.34 murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, 00:05:07.37\00:05:10.01 false witness, and blasphemies. 00:05:10.04\00:05:12.21 These are the things which defile a man, 00:05:12.24\00:05:14.68 but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man." 00:05:14.71\00:05:18.41 Okay, we have here very interesting episode 00:05:18.45\00:05:22.48 from the life of Jesus. 00:05:22.52\00:05:24.19 And unfortunately many Christians 00:05:24.22\00:05:26.32 are taking these episodes 00:05:26.35\00:05:28.16 they're joining these with very similar 00:05:28.19\00:05:30.93 from Mark Chapter 7, and Mark has one sentence 00:05:30.96\00:05:34.56 that he added that his own interpretation there, 00:05:34.56\00:05:37.43 they put it together to show how the coming of Jesus. 00:05:37.47\00:05:40.90 And his instructions the commandment 00:05:40.94\00:05:42.60 that Jesus gave actually Christians 00:05:42.64\00:05:45.14 are allowed to eat everything and that the dietary laws 00:05:45.17\00:05:48.78 of the Old Testament were abolished by Jesus. 00:05:48.81\00:05:52.38 Unfortunately such an interpretation 00:05:52.41\00:05:55.45 is not supported by the texts. 00:05:55.48\00:05:58.12 So in order to understand 00:05:58.15\00:05:59.49 what is going there in the text, 00:05:59.52\00:06:01.02 we have to analyze the parable, 00:06:01.06\00:06:03.22 what was the problem? 00:06:03.26\00:06:04.83 The Pharisees were watching the disciples, 00:06:04.86\00:06:08.26 how they were eating, so there was a food there, 00:06:08.30\00:06:10.93 they would come from outside, they are in the room. 00:06:10.97\00:06:13.64 They would grab the food and eat it. 00:06:13.67\00:06:16.24 Keep in mind. 00:06:16.27\00:06:17.61 According to the Jewish practice and their law, 00:06:17.64\00:06:22.18 Pharisaic Law, the disciples were supposed 00:06:22.21\00:06:25.31 first to wash their hands. 00:06:25.35\00:06:29.05 And let's clarify this is not an issue 00:06:29.08\00:06:30.52 about cleanliness here. This is about religious defile. 00:06:30.55\00:06:33.46 And we know that before we eat, 00:06:33.49\00:06:35.82 we have to wash our hands. 00:06:35.86\00:06:37.19 For sanitation but not for holiness. 00:06:37.23\00:06:38.63 But it is not about that. 00:06:38.66\00:06:40.36 It's very important to understand 00:06:40.40\00:06:41.93 what is washing meant? 00:06:41.96\00:06:43.30 You know, according to the Pharisaic rule, 00:06:43.33\00:06:45.87 you would put just in small container 00:06:45.90\00:06:48.57 just small like this, you would put water, 00:06:48.60\00:06:51.31 this we are talking about. 00:06:51.34\00:06:53.14 And then you would take it, you would put, 00:06:53.17\00:06:56.04 your hands like this and pour out the water 00:06:56.08\00:06:58.71 just a little bit, just a small amount of water, 00:06:58.75\00:07:00.98 it's not about washing. 00:07:01.02\00:07:02.48 You have to get these, so that water will go down 00:07:02.52\00:07:05.92 and that's spiritual uncleanness 00:07:05.95\00:07:07.56 would be washed from your hands going down. 00:07:07.59\00:07:10.19 And then you are ritually clean to eat, that water. 00:07:10.23\00:07:13.56 We are not dealing here with hygiene. 00:07:13.60\00:07:16.70 We are not dealing here about something 00:07:16.73\00:07:18.27 that today are, you know, 00:07:18.30\00:07:19.73 parents are teaching their children. 00:07:19.77\00:07:21.24 We are dealing with ritual that people established 00:07:21.27\00:07:25.54 and now the Pharisees are criticizing Jesus 00:07:25.57\00:07:28.98 that his disciples were eating 00:07:29.01\00:07:31.85 with those ritually unclean hands. 00:07:31.88\00:07:34.78 But there is something interesting 00:07:34.82\00:07:36.15 that Jesus points here, He says, 00:07:36.18\00:07:37.85 "You are criticizing My disciples 00:07:37.89\00:07:40.52 they are breaking the tradition, 00:07:40.56\00:07:42.32 at the same time you are breaking the law of God, 00:07:42.36\00:07:47.23 because of your tradition." 00:07:47.30\00:07:49.00 And Jesus is using here 00:07:49.03\00:07:50.97 a practical example of what they did. 00:07:51.00\00:07:53.30 The person would make-- 00:07:53.34\00:08:00.41 had the duty to support his parents, 00:08:00.44\00:08:03.78 he would take that money, bring to the church. 00:08:03.81\00:08:05.91 He would not support the parents 00:08:05.95\00:08:07.28 but because of the tradition that was not, 00:08:07.32\00:08:09.12 you know, against the law of God. 00:08:09.15\00:08:10.85 Yeah, let's catch that point. 00:08:10.89\00:08:12.79 Out of hardheadedness, they would pretend 00:08:12.82\00:08:15.09 they're giving to God what they should have done 00:08:15.12\00:08:17.16 to care for their parents. Yes. 00:08:17.19\00:08:19.29 So what was Jesus response is? 00:08:19.33\00:08:24.60 It does not defile the person what goes into our body, 00:08:24.63\00:08:28.40 what comes out of the body, 00:08:28.44\00:08:30.91 it's not there, it's here is. 00:08:30.94\00:08:33.91 Here Jesus is not talking about clean or unclean food. 00:08:33.94\00:08:38.08 The text makes very clear in verse 20, 00:08:38.11\00:08:41.05 the--verse 19 and 20, 00:08:41.08\00:08:43.69 "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, 00:08:43.72\00:08:46.09 murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, 00:08:46.12\00:08:49.89 false witness, slanders, these are the things 00:08:49.92\00:08:52.93 which defile the man," 00:08:52.96\00:08:54.30 but to eat with unwashed hands, 00:08:54.36\00:08:57.10 Jesus is not talking here about the dietary laws. 00:08:57.13\00:09:00.67 He's talking about the Jewish tradition 00:09:00.70\00:09:03.24 eating with unwashed hands. 00:09:03.27\00:09:05.81 Okay, if Jesus says this does not defile 00:09:05.84\00:09:08.58 the human beings, so this text cannot be taken, 00:09:08.61\00:09:11.41 you know, in support of any abolishment 00:09:11.45\00:09:14.12 of those dietary laws 00:09:14.15\00:09:15.75 that are so clearly specified there in the Old Testament. 00:09:15.78\00:09:19.75 So when Matthew quotes Isaiah and says, 00:09:19.79\00:09:23.89 "And in vain they worship me," 00:09:23.93\00:09:25.69 teaching his commandments, 00:09:25.73\00:09:28.06 teaching his doctrines and commandments of men, 00:09:28.10\00:09:30.10 he's really showing that their traditions, 00:09:30.13\00:09:32.57 their layers of rules were taking people away 00:09:32.60\00:09:37.31 from really following God. 00:09:37.34\00:09:38.77 Actually verse 18, what you are saying here, 00:09:38.81\00:09:41.18 Jesus says, where is that every plant--yeah, 00:09:41.21\00:09:47.25 verse 13, Jesus said, 00:09:47.28\00:09:50.25 "Every plant which My heavenly Father 00:09:50.29\00:09:54.16 did not plant shall be uprooted." 00:09:54.19\00:09:55.92 What is the plant that any tradition 00:09:55.96\00:09:58.13 that people established that is contrary to the law of God? 00:09:58.16\00:10:03.16 It did not come from God 00:10:03.20\00:10:05.03 and God will probably by the passing of the time, 00:10:05.07\00:10:07.94 God will make it obsolete and take away from people. 00:10:07.97\00:10:12.71 Glenn, can I ask you one question? 00:10:12.74\00:10:14.94 If we really here with the tradition, 00:10:14.98\00:10:16.91 is tradition important or not? 00:10:16.95\00:10:19.05 All of us have tradition, in fact, 00:10:19.08\00:10:21.02 good traditions are a blessing in our life. 00:10:21.05\00:10:23.02 Should the church have tradition? Sure. 00:10:23.05\00:10:25.55 So when we come to the church 00:10:25.59\00:10:27.96 and we begin first with singing hymns 00:10:27.99\00:10:31.99 and after that we kneel down and we pray, 00:10:32.03\00:10:35.20 that's, it's not in the Bible, we don't have such order, 00:10:35.23\00:10:38.20 is that important? Of course it is. 00:10:38.23\00:10:40.27 In most of our western part of the world, 00:10:40.30\00:10:42.50 we go to church 11 o'clock service, we call it. Sure. 00:10:42.54\00:10:45.17 Who decided 11 o'clock? 00:10:45.21\00:10:46.54 There's no scripture about that. 00:10:46.57\00:10:48.64 See, Glenn, tradition is important. Mm-hmm. 00:10:48.68\00:10:52.68 It comes from human experience 00:10:52.71\00:10:54.18 but the problem is when tradition becomes 00:10:54.22\00:10:57.95 the law of God and goes beyond the scriptures. 00:10:57.99\00:11:02.79 We know that many Christians in this world today, 00:11:02.82\00:11:05.69 they don't go to the Bible. 00:11:05.73\00:11:07.30 They simply try to find the answer to the question. 00:11:07.30\00:11:10.47 What we have been doing for centuries 00:11:10.50\00:11:12.80 and doing and we are breaking the law of God 00:11:12.83\00:11:15.94 because of our tradition is. 00:11:15.97\00:11:18.57 Jesus tried to tell us here, 00:11:18.61\00:11:20.64 the tradition will not save us, 00:11:20.68\00:11:23.01 it's only we stick to the law of God 00:11:23.04\00:11:25.08 and if we take what God said as the most important, 00:11:25.11\00:11:27.95 what the God says, the word of God 00:11:27.98\00:11:29.62 is the measure of everything 00:11:29.65\00:11:30.99 which we are doing in our lives. 00:11:31.02\00:11:32.35 By the way, we have the next text 00:11:32.39\00:11:33.72 that actually here follows. 00:11:33.76\00:11:35.09 The next story is such an amazing story. 00:11:35.12\00:11:37.59 It's especially close to me. 00:11:37.63\00:11:39.23 I grew up in the country of Lebanon, 00:11:39.26\00:11:40.90 which is where it takes place. 00:11:40.93\00:11:42.70 Uh, "Then Jesus went out from there 00:11:42.73\00:11:44.53 and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 00:11:44.57\00:11:46.60 And He meets a woman a Canaanite." 00:11:46.63\00:11:49.00 The Jews have been rejecting, 00:11:49.04\00:11:50.37 resisting many of the people of the Jews. 00:11:50.41\00:11:52.47 "But now a Canaanite woman comes 00:11:52.51\00:11:54.28 from the region says have mercy on me, 00:11:54.31\00:11:56.78 O Lord, Son of David." 00:11:56.81\00:11:58.18 What a sweet sound that must have been in His ears 00:11:58.21\00:12:00.62 to have someone who's recognizing Him. 00:12:00.65\00:12:02.68 "My daughter is severely demon-possessed." 00:12:02.72\00:12:04.85 But His response of shocking, tell us about it, Ranko. 00:12:04.89\00:12:07.66 Yes. Uh, it's so interesting is here 00:12:07.69\00:12:12.93 that this woman comes to Jesus, 00:12:12.96\00:12:15.23 she wants to have, you know, healing for her daughter, 00:12:15.26\00:12:18.07 but Jesus said, "I'm sent just for the lost sheep of Israel." 00:12:18.10\00:12:22.27 Evidently it was here the test of the faith of this woman 00:12:22.30\00:12:27.01 but what kind of faith she manifested here, 00:12:27.04\00:12:29.94 that actually it is through her faith 00:12:29.98\00:12:32.55 that she received the answer that Jesus gave to her 00:12:32.58\00:12:36.45 and what she was looking for, 00:12:36.48\00:12:38.62 finally she found the Jesus Christ. 00:12:38.65\00:12:39.99 The shock of her surprise when he responds this way. 00:12:40.02\00:12:43.69 There must have been something in His eyes, 00:12:43.73\00:12:45.26 something in His voice that gave her some hope. 00:12:45.29\00:12:47.76 That He is saying these prejudice things 00:12:47.83\00:12:50.03 that His disciples believe, 00:12:50.07\00:12:51.57 but there's something else that gave her hope. 00:12:51.60\00:12:53.47 She was put on by people as unclean, 00:12:53.50\00:12:56.94 she was an outcast. She was rejected. 00:12:56.97\00:13:00.04 But Jesus Christ never rejects anybody. 00:13:00.08\00:13:03.71 I would like to say to the viewers, 00:13:03.75\00:13:06.25 I don't know what and the way people look up on you 00:13:06.28\00:13:10.75 but praise God we have a wonderful savior 00:13:10.79\00:13:13.29 and we always find a great friend and savior in Him. 00:13:13.32\00:13:16.93
