It's always a joy to do ministry together. 00:01:35.99\00:01:38.36 And I can't wait to get into the scripture here. 00:01:38.39\00:01:40.76 Ranko, lead us in pray 00:01:40.80\00:01:42.10 that we may have God's guidance as we study. 00:01:42.13\00:01:45.63 "Our Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us 00:01:45.67\00:01:50.34 this wonderful Gospel written by disciple by name, Matthew. 00:01:50.37\00:01:57.91 Father, we are learning here about unique picture 00:01:57.95\00:02:01.12 of Jesus Christ and we want that Jesus who was then, 00:02:01.15\00:02:05.35 become our own savior now and today. 00:02:05.39\00:02:09.46 So please speak to us and give us the thoughts 00:02:09.49\00:02:13.03 that the Holy Spirit can impact 00:02:13.06\00:02:15.13 in understanding the life of Jesus Christ 00:02:15.16\00:02:18.10 and to understand how great savior He is to us today. 00:02:18.13\00:02:21.40 We pray all of this in His precious name, Amen." 00:02:21.44\00:02:25.47 Amen. Ranko, it's been a wonderful journey 00:02:25.51\00:02:28.34 so far in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:02:28.38\00:02:29.78 I'm looking forward to what God has for us this time. 00:02:29.81\00:02:32.61 Where are we in the story of Jesus? 00:02:32.65\00:02:36.55 You know, as we move through the Gospel of Matthew, 00:02:36.58\00:02:42.12 as he is portraying Jesus and His ministry of earth, 00:02:42.16\00:02:46.16 there is one thing that we have to keep in mind 00:02:46.19\00:02:50.20 that which is going on there with Jesus 00:02:50.23\00:02:52.37 and His ministry was a part of the great controversy. 00:02:52.40\00:02:56.60 Yes. That even started there in heaven 00:02:56.64\00:03:00.38 between God and Satan. 00:03:00.41\00:03:02.68 And Satan, he knew 00:03:02.71\00:03:05.65 that Jesus would one day come to this earth, 00:03:05.68\00:03:08.78 to his kingdom there, 00:03:08.82\00:03:10.19 he was waiting for that opportunity. 00:03:10.22\00:03:12.39 So we have everyday of Jesus ministry, 00:03:12.42\00:03:15.69 can I say even every minute of Jesus ministry, 00:03:15.72\00:03:18.56 was just under a scrutiny of Satan 00:03:18.59\00:03:22.46 and watch to prevent the Jesus ministry. 00:03:22.50\00:03:25.57 You know why Jesus came, to die? 00:03:25.60\00:03:27.97 To save his people from their sin. 00:03:28.00\00:03:30.14 And Satan was making a constant effort 00:03:30.17\00:03:33.61 how to prevent that ministry of Jesus 00:03:33.64\00:03:37.01 and the redemption that He wanted 00:03:37.05\00:03:38.55 to provide for human beings. 00:03:38.58\00:03:40.18 It is with that thought 00:03:40.22\00:03:41.55 that we are coming here to Chapter 14. 00:03:41.58\00:03:43.28 Doesn't that make His victory and sinlessness 00:03:43.32\00:03:46.79 so much more wonderful? Yes. 00:03:46.82\00:03:48.76 Because he's under such attack. 00:03:48.79\00:03:50.36 That attack is not only directly towards him, 00:03:50.39\00:03:52.53 it's directed towards others. 00:03:52.56\00:03:54.20 See, Glenn, first what Satan did, 00:03:54.23\00:03:58.37 he turned to Jewish leaders. That is why 00:03:58.40\00:04:01.80 Jewish nations are against Jesus. 00:04:01.84\00:04:04.37 When we go further on, 00:04:04.41\00:04:06.57 he tried even to use Jesus own family, 00:04:06.61\00:04:09.21 his brothers against Jesus. 00:04:09.24\00:04:11.01 He did everything, everything to prevent Jesus 00:04:11.05\00:04:13.92 and His ministry. 00:04:13.95\00:04:15.38 Now there is a very sad event that took place, 00:04:15.42\00:04:21.16 that really marks somehow a turning around 00:04:21.19\00:04:24.29 a point in Jesus ministry 00:04:24.33\00:04:26.46 and what was going on from this time on, 00:04:26.49\00:04:29.63 it's the death of John the Baptist. 00:04:29.66\00:04:32.30 So please I would really like to ask you, 00:04:32.33\00:04:34.54 if you can read Chapter 14, verses 1:12. 00:04:34.57\00:04:38.34 And we should remember that John the Baptist, 00:04:38.37\00:04:40.24 was one that had introduced Jesus. Introduced Jesus. 00:04:40.28\00:04:43.98 And prepared the way and is a relative. 00:04:44.01\00:04:47.85 "At that time Herod the Tetrarch heard 00:04:47.88\00:04:49.82 the reports about Jesus and said to his servants, 00:04:49.85\00:04:52.35 'This is John the Baptist, he has risen from the dead, 00:04:52.39\00:04:55.19 and therefore these powers are at work in him.' 00:04:55.22\00:04:58.69 For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, 00:04:58.73\00:05:01.16 and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, 00:05:01.20\00:05:03.23 his brother Philip's wife because John had said to him, 00:05:03.26\00:05:06.47 It is not lawful for you to have her. 00:05:06.50\00:05:09.10 And although he wanted to put him to death, 00:05:09.14\00:05:10.94 he feared the multitude, 00:05:10.97\00:05:12.77 because they counted him as a prophet. 00:05:12.81\00:05:15.44 But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, 00:05:15.48\00:05:17.25 the daughter of Herodias 00:05:17.28\00:05:18.98 danced before them and pleased Herod. 00:05:19.01\00:05:22.05 Therefore he promised with an oath 00:05:22.08\00:05:24.72 to give her whatever she might ask. 00:05:24.75\00:05:27.79 So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, 00:05:27.82\00:05:31.13 'give me John the Baptist's head on a platter.' 00:05:31.16\00:05:34.10 And the king was sorry, 00:05:34.10\00:05:35.53 Nevertheless because of the oath's 00:05:35.56\00:05:38.17 and because of those who sat with him, 00:05:38.20\00:05:40.30 he commanded it to be given to her. 00:05:40.34\00:05:42.37 So he sent and had John beheaded in prison, 00:05:42.40\00:05:45.41 and his head was brought on a platter 00:05:45.44\00:05:47.58 and given to the girl 00:05:47.61\00:05:49.04 and she brought it to her mother. 00:05:49.08\00:05:50.98 Then his disciples came and carried away the body 00:05:51.01\00:05:54.28 and buried it and they went and told Jesus." 00:05:54.32\00:05:57.49 What a terrible brutal tragedy! 00:05:57.52\00:06:00.42 Actually, the event that is portrayed here 00:06:00.46\00:06:04.63 is not only in the Gospels, 00:06:04.66\00:06:06.16 we know that the Jewish historian, Josephus, 00:06:06.19\00:06:09.06 actually he noticed this event. 00:06:09.10\00:06:11.17 When John the Baptist was beheaded, 00:06:11.20\00:06:14.40 actually the news spread throughout Galilee and Judea. 00:06:14.44\00:06:18.81 This was a very significant, significant event. 00:06:18.84\00:06:22.31 Herod, that is mentioned here, was Herod Agrippa, 00:06:22.34\00:06:27.75 Antipas, the son of Herod the great, 00:06:27.78\00:06:32.25 that notorious ruler that tried to kill Jesus, 00:06:32.29\00:06:35.36 you know by killing those children there in Bethlehem. 00:06:35.39\00:06:39.29 But evidently the Herod here 00:06:39.33\00:06:40.73 was nothing better than his father. 00:06:40.76\00:06:43.53 According to Josephus, 00:06:43.57\00:06:45.00 he was so much afraid of John the Baptist 00:06:45.03\00:06:47.84 because people were holding him as a prophet. 00:06:47.87\00:06:50.27 He was afraid for his throne 00:06:50.31\00:06:52.27 and evidently he tried to find any excuse 00:06:52.31\00:06:54.91 to kill the John the Baptist 00:06:54.94\00:06:56.28 and he took that opportunity and he killed John. 00:06:56.31\00:07:00.05 We see something of Jesus, 00:07:00.08\00:07:02.98 you referred a couple of lessons ago 00:07:03.02\00:07:04.82 about Jesus compassion. 00:07:04.85\00:07:06.49 How does He respond to this sad news? 00:07:06.52\00:07:11.29 Actually, there is one phrase to tell us everything in, 00:07:11.33\00:07:15.80 in verse 13, the first phrase. 00:07:15.83\00:07:19.33 "When Jesus heard of it, he departed from there." 00:07:19.37\00:07:22.20 Where did he go? 00:07:22.24\00:07:23.71 "By boat to a deserted place by Himself." 00:07:23.74\00:07:27.18 Far away from everybody. 00:07:27.21\00:07:29.61 Evidently, in the death of John the Baptist, 00:07:29.64\00:07:33.62 Jesus saw a precursor of His own death. 00:07:33.65\00:07:39.72 Jesus saw that His ministry very, 00:07:39.75\00:07:42.16 very soon will come to its end. 00:07:42.19\00:07:44.63 By the way, from this point on, 00:07:44.66\00:07:46.39 very short time passed until the time of Jesus death. 00:07:46.43\00:07:50.13 Even though, I think the viewers 00:07:50.17\00:07:53.00 should not be confused with the fact 00:07:53.03\00:07:54.54 that we have how many more than 10 Chapters, 00:07:54.57\00:07:56.74 14 Chapters up to that point is. 00:07:56.77\00:07:58.31 This is not the time indication here, 00:07:58.34\00:08:00.91 we just start talking about short time 00:08:00.94\00:08:02.78 from this point on until Jesus was-- 00:08:02.81\00:08:04.41 Few months. And Jesus was very much 00:08:04.45\00:08:07.02 concerned about his own ministry and what will happen 00:08:07.05\00:08:10.69 and can you imagine, we are dealing here 00:08:10.72\00:08:12.62 with a human nature of Christ, 00:08:12.65\00:08:15.29 concern that He had, 00:08:15.32\00:08:16.66 He rendered to the secluded place there, 00:08:16.69\00:08:19.03 where nobody was there to contemplate 00:08:19.06\00:08:21.30 about the future of his ministry 00:08:21.33\00:08:23.23 and what will happen to Him in the last day 00:08:23.26\00:08:25.17 of His ministry when He has to die on the cross. 00:08:25.20\00:08:27.64 And we could pause and be very aware 00:08:27.67\00:08:29.40 that we may need to do the same thing 00:08:29.44\00:08:31.44 when bad news comes when we hear of sorrows. 00:08:31.47\00:08:35.61 We just need to come away sometime. 00:08:35.64\00:08:37.65 Just yesterday, I got news 00:08:37.68\00:08:39.01 that a friend of mine had passed away 00:08:39.05\00:08:40.68 half way around the world, 00:08:40.72\00:08:42.18 I need to spend just a little time with God, 00:08:42.22\00:08:44.55 there's sometimes when we just got to tell Jesus 00:08:44.59\00:08:46.79 because no one else understands. 00:08:46.82\00:08:48.62 Jesus Himself went 00:08:48.66\00:08:50.66 to His Father to be alone with Him. 00:08:50.69\00:08:52.93 But Glenn, Jesus went to the seclude place 00:08:52.96\00:08:57.53 but there is something very interesting that I notice. 00:08:57.57\00:09:01.04 What do we have in the rest of verse 13? 00:09:01.07\00:09:04.77 Was he, was he alone there? 00:09:04.81\00:09:06.54 "But when the multitude heard it, 00:09:06.57\00:09:08.21 they followed Him on foot from the cities. 00:09:08.24\00:09:10.71 And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude, 00:09:10.75\00:09:13.65 He was moved with compassion." 00:09:13.68\00:09:15.62 Even his grieving is interrupted. 00:09:15.65\00:09:17.65 So can you imagine, did Jesus say 00:09:17.69\00:09:19.75 please leave Me alone, 00:09:19.79\00:09:22.02 you know, I need to be by Myself, 00:09:22.06\00:09:25.46 I have issues and problems. 00:09:25.49\00:09:27.66 Can you imagine? 00:09:27.73\00:09:29.03 What is the expression for compassion, 00:09:29.06\00:09:31.93 His inner organs were moved. 00:09:31.97\00:09:36.57 So that the worry and care about Himself 00:09:36.60\00:09:39.77 disappear from Jesus because the needs of the people 00:09:39.81\00:09:43.21 were much more important 00:09:43.24\00:09:45.11 than His own situation in which He was. 00:09:45.15\00:09:47.92 Boy I learned something from this. 00:09:47.95\00:09:49.32 What a heart of love. 00:09:49.35\00:09:50.69 So many times we, as Christians, 00:09:50.72\00:09:53.69 we are so much concerned about ourselves, 00:09:53.72\00:09:56.46 we are concerned about our own situations, 00:09:56.49\00:09:59.46 about own problem and we find it as excuse 00:09:59.49\00:10:02.30 why we do not, you know, 00:10:02.33\00:10:03.97 carry the witness about Christ to others as 00:10:04.00\00:10:07.90 after learning about Jesus Christ, 00:10:07.94\00:10:09.57 is the needs of others are much important 00:10:09.60\00:10:12.67 than our own needs 00:10:12.71\00:10:14.34 and when we show compassion toward others, 00:10:14.38\00:10:17.21 it effects our inner spiritual life here. 00:10:17.25\00:10:20.25 But there is something else, 00:10:20.28\00:10:21.72 I'm sorry for interrupting you. 00:10:21.75\00:10:23.08 No, no, please. 00:10:23.12\00:10:24.45 Not only that Jesus was not alone 00:10:24.49\00:10:25.82 with reference with the people, 00:10:25.85\00:10:27.62 keep in mind, you can go to the secluded place 00:10:27.66\00:10:30.69 and if you think, you are alone 00:10:30.73\00:10:32.06 but you are not alone, who is there? 00:10:32.09\00:10:34.23 Is the devil. The devil--the devil never, 00:10:34.30\00:10:39.67 never left Jesus by ourselves. 00:10:39.70\00:10:41.74 So what happened, people were hungry there, 00:10:41.77\00:10:44.97 Jesus showed compassion 00:10:45.01\00:10:46.41 and we know that he fed 5,000 people 00:10:46.44\00:10:49.58 with few loafs of bread and fish. 00:10:49.61\00:10:53.65 Okay. The Christians usually are familiar with this story 00:10:53.68\00:10:58.39 but then comes verse 22. 00:10:58.42\00:11:00.99 What do we have in verse 22? 00:11:01.02\00:11:02.62 "Immediately Jesus made His disciple 00:11:02.66\00:11:04.33 get into the boat 00:11:04.36\00:11:05.69 and go before Him to the other side, 00:11:05.73\00:11:07.46 while he sent the multitudes away." That's surprise. 00:11:07.50\00:11:10.10 He's just had this incredible meal, 00:11:10.13\00:11:12.17 tremendous response, 00:11:12.20\00:11:13.90 what a response that people must have had! 00:11:13.94\00:11:16.44 Okay, Glenn, if people are hungry 00:11:16.47\00:11:20.64 and I feed them, 00:11:20.68\00:11:22.14 isn't that not an opportunity to open the word of God 00:11:22.18\00:11:26.11 and to teach those people 00:11:26.15\00:11:27.48 and now because they see a miracle 00:11:27.52\00:11:29.65 that's so receptive, why suddenly, 00:11:29.68\00:11:32.52 actually Matthew different then Mark, 00:11:32.55\00:11:36.69 hardly uses the word 'immediately'. Mm-hmm. 00:11:36.73\00:11:40.66 When he uses the word immediately, it's immediately, 00:11:40.70\00:11:43.40 there is something that happened, 00:11:43.43\00:11:45.90 that prompted Jesus to tell His disciples 00:11:45.93\00:11:48.40 go there to the boat, 00:11:48.44\00:11:49.77 let swim the other side of lake, 00:11:49.80\00:11:51.14 leading people, why? 00:11:51.17\00:11:54.41 There was something to do with the response of the people. 00:11:54.44\00:11:57.05 The people. And then we have 00:11:57.08\00:11:58.95 through the Gospel of John Chapter 6 00:11:58.98\00:12:00.92 to find explanation, 00:12:00.95\00:12:02.28 Matthew does not talk, talk about that. 00:12:02.32\00:12:04.29 And when we read the Gospel of Matthew, 00:12:04.32\00:12:06.79 when people saw the miracle that Jesus did, 00:12:06.82\00:12:09.89 they said, this is the kind of a king that we need, 00:12:09.92\00:12:14.20 we will not work, we will arrest 00:12:14.23\00:12:16.53 and He will provide food, food for us. 00:12:16.56\00:12:19.33 Let us make Him the king 00:12:19.37\00:12:21.77 and all our economic problems will be solved. 00:12:21.80\00:12:25.44 Actually it is at that moment that Jesus recognized 00:12:25.47\00:12:29.31 the effort of Satan to prevent Him 00:12:29.34\00:12:32.81 to go to the cross 00:12:32.85\00:12:34.92 and to accomplish His mission in an easy way. 00:12:34.95\00:12:37.92 Do you remember? Very similar 00:12:37.95\00:12:39.29 to what he tried to do with Jesus 00:12:39.32\00:12:41.36 with those first three temptations. 00:12:41.39\00:12:44.16 And you see, Jesus need not succumb 00:12:44.19\00:12:46.19 to that popular demand, 00:12:46.23\00:12:48.23 Jesus recognized here an effort of Satan 00:12:48.26\00:12:51.13 to prevent Him to go to the cross 00:12:51.17\00:12:53.80 and immediately Jesus departed from that place. 00:12:53.84\00:12:57.17 Actually God always succeed, God is always victor, 00:12:57.21\00:13:01.08 God always, always wins 00:13:01.11\00:13:02.71 and Satan's plan at this moment failed completely. 00:13:02.74\00:13:07.65 They wanted to make Messiah a king 00:13:07.68\00:13:09.35 but they didn't understand. 00:13:09.38\00:13:11.19 Jesus has to redefine their understanding of Messiah 00:13:11.22\00:13:14.62 and to redefine their understanding of the Kingdom. 00:13:14.66\00:13:17.53 Because imagine, if they could have a leader 00:13:17.56\00:13:19.19 who would feed them and clothe them 00:13:19.23\00:13:21.40 and raise them from, do all these things, 00:13:21.43\00:13:23.37 they could overcome any army, 00:13:23.40\00:13:24.73 they could finally have their national state again. 00:13:24.77\00:13:27.34 But you know, Jesus went to another place, 00:13:27.37\00:13:31.24 then people come there to visit Jesus. 00:13:31.27\00:13:34.78 Again Jesus shows the compassion. 00:13:34.81\00:13:36.71 Jesus is always there to help people. 00:13:36.75\00:13:38.91 Boy, what kind of Jesus Christ 00:13:38.95\00:13:41.82 is present in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:13:41.85\00:13:43.52 Jesus who really cares about the needs of people. 00:13:43.55\00:13:46.42 He does not look at our mistakes that we made. 00:13:46.45\00:13:50.69 Sometimes our ill intensions that we make, 00:13:50.73\00:13:53.96 really Jesus looks deep there in our heart, 00:13:54.00\00:13:56.90 He sees our needs and He cares for us. 00:13:56.93\00:14:00.20 We're gonna learn a lot more 00:14:00.24\00:14:01.57 about the compassion of Jesus 00:14:01.60\00:14:02.94 in just a moment right after a break. 00:14:02.97\00:14:04.57 We'll be right back. 00:14:04.61\00:14:05.94
