Welcome back, you remember we've been pondering 00:00:01.33\00:00:03.57 what Jesus meant when he said, 00:00:03.60\00:00:05.80 "Come on unto Me and take My yoke upon you, 00:00:05.83\00:00:08.20 and I'll give you rest". 00:00:08.24\00:00:09.77 Let's explore a little bit more 00:00:09.80\00:00:11.37 about this yoke of Jesus. 00:00:11.41\00:00:13.31 So let's be it reminded one more time. 00:00:13.34\00:00:15.51 Among the Jewish people, 00:00:15.54\00:00:17.88 the metaphor of yoke was used 00:00:17.91\00:00:21.22 for the observance of the torah of the law, okay. 00:00:22.68\00:00:26.72 So it's how I live my life with God's law? 00:00:26.76\00:00:28.86 Actually, Jesus used that concept. 00:00:28.89\00:00:31.69 Jesus--also the rest of the New Testament, 00:00:31.73\00:00:35.40 we heard that concept. 00:00:35.43\00:00:36.77 Let's just see the two texts, 00:00:36.80\00:00:38.77 the Book of Acts, Chapter 15 verse 10. 00:00:38.80\00:00:41.07 Oh, you're jumping right into 00:00:41.10\00:00:42.44 the middle of the conflict? Yes. 00:00:42.47\00:00:43.94 In the early church about what should the converts do? 00:00:43.97\00:00:47.31 How much should they follow God's law? 00:00:47.34\00:00:49.61 Acts Chapter 15-- Verse 10. 00:00:49.64\00:00:52.15 "Now therefore why do you test God, 00:00:53.21\00:00:55.88 by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples, 00:00:55.92\00:00:58.59 which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 00:00:58.62\00:01:01.29 So what was the yoke of that 00:01:01.32\00:01:03.83 actually Peter and James are referring here in the text? 00:01:03.86\00:01:07.13 What was that yoke actually Peter was talking? 00:01:07.20\00:01:08.80 What was the yoke? 00:01:08.83\00:01:10.17 Yoke was really the Pharisaic system, 00:01:10.20\00:01:13.70 trying to dissect the law of God 00:01:14.87\00:01:16.71 and focus on so many details. 00:01:16.74\00:01:18.84 Actually, they made such system 00:01:18.87\00:01:20.44 that people could hardly practice all those details. 00:01:20.48\00:01:24.18 It was a heavy burden put on their shoulder. 00:01:24.21\00:01:27.18 Let's remember that legalism is a problem 00:01:27.22\00:01:30.95 of the misuse of the law. 00:01:30.99\00:01:32.32 The law as we saw earlier, 00:01:32.35\00:01:33.69 Jesus didn't come to do away with it. 00:01:33.72\00:01:35.39 Everything about to do's and don'ts etc. 00:01:35.42\00:01:38.63 So, the law is not put away. 00:01:38.66\00:01:40.00 Jesus doesn't say throw your yoke away. 00:01:40.03\00:01:41.76 He says "I've a new way for you to live". 00:01:41.80\00:01:43.50 Let's go another text, Galatians 5:1. 00:01:43.53\00:01:47.74 Okay and we're dealing Galatians deals 00:01:47.77\00:01:50.27 with some of the same issues. 00:01:50.31\00:01:51.64 The same concept. The same concept. 00:01:51.67\00:01:53.44 Galatians 5:1, "Stand fast therefore 00:01:53.48\00:01:56.08 in the liberty by which Christ has made you free, 00:01:56.11\00:01:58.68 and do not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage." 00:01:58.71\00:02:01.95 What was the problem with Galatians? 00:02:01.98\00:02:04.02 First they received the gospel 00:02:04.05\00:02:05.85 and after that they went 00:02:05.89\00:02:07.22 to that Pharisaic system of the laws 00:02:07.26\00:02:10.03 to get and Paul told them you were in slavery 00:02:10.06\00:02:13.96 and you're going now back 00:02:14.00\00:02:15.30 putting that yoke up on yourself, 00:02:15.33\00:02:16.93 so it's clearly the observance of the-- 00:02:16.97\00:02:18.97 Of the yoke of bondage. 00:02:19.00\00:02:20.34 You're saying that there is a radical difference 00:02:20.37\00:02:22.27 between how Jesus says we live our lives 00:02:22.30\00:02:24.44 and how the religious establishment at the time. 00:02:24.47\00:02:26.94 Keep in mind here 00:02:26.98\00:02:28.74 that actually Jesus talks about My yoke. 00:02:28.78\00:02:33.21 So there is My yoke. What does it mean? 00:02:33.25\00:02:35.58 There is also somebody else's yoke. 00:02:35.62\00:02:38.59 So Jesus here makes contrast--makes contrast 00:02:38.62\00:02:42.02 between the Pharisaic observance of the law, 00:02:42.06\00:02:45.76 the yoke of the Pharisees that they try to put 00:02:45.79\00:02:48.46 on the people and His own yoke 00:02:48.50\00:02:50.47 and what was the difference, Glenn? 00:02:50.50\00:02:52.33 The Pharisaic law was very heavy, oppressing yoke. 00:02:52.37\00:02:57.54 The yoke that Jesus offered, 00:02:57.57\00:02:59.01 the way how to observe the law was very light, 00:02:59.04\00:03:01.84 it was very delightful, as David said 00:03:01.88\00:03:04.08 "Your law is the light to my soul." 00:03:04.11\00:03:08.38 It's significant that He doesn't say 00:03:08.42\00:03:09.78 come just to the yoke, He says come to Me. 00:03:09.82\00:03:11.99 Come to Me. Come to Me. 00:03:12.02\00:03:13.69 And this yoke is here connected 00:03:13.72\00:03:16.32 with the word arrest. 00:03:16.36\00:03:18.96 The word arrest, it really a solution 00:03:18.99\00:03:21.20 to the Sabbath and this is exactly. 00:03:21.23\00:03:22.93 You see the problem is, when we started 00:03:22.96\00:03:25.07 the Gospel of Matthew, we always depend 00:03:25.10\00:03:29.07 on the division of the gospel in two Chapters. 00:03:29.10\00:03:31.91 Matthew never divided his gospel into Chapters. 00:03:31.94\00:03:35.01 The chapters were invented much, much later period 00:03:35.04\00:03:39.48 that are very useful to us, for our convenience. 00:03:39.51\00:03:41.62 But the problem is so many times, 00:03:41.65\00:03:43.42 we don't make connection between the previous chapter 00:03:43.45\00:03:46.22 and the chapter that follows. 00:03:46.25\00:03:47.99 Actually, this is exactly, Glenn, what do we have-- 00:03:48.02\00:03:50.53 So you're hinting, we need to see the connection-- 00:03:50.56\00:03:52.23 We've to see the connection 00:03:52.26\00:03:53.60 because this text is introduction to Chapter 12. 00:03:53.63\00:03:56.60 Let me read the end of Chapter 11. 00:03:56.63\00:03:59.03 "For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." 00:03:59.07\00:04:01.34 He has just talked about coming 00:04:01.37\00:04:02.84 and finding rest for your souls and then Chapter 12. 00:04:02.87\00:04:05.84 "At that time, Jesus went 00:04:05.87\00:04:07.21 through the grainfields on the Sabbath. 00:04:07.24\00:04:09.14 And what happened text? All right. 00:04:09.18\00:04:10.65 And his disciples were hungry, 00:04:10.68\00:04:12.01 and began to pluck grains of--heads of grain to eat. 00:04:12.05\00:04:15.45 And when the Pharisees saw it, 00:04:15.48\00:04:19.19 they said to him, look, 00:04:19.22\00:04:20.76 your disciples are doing what is not lawful 00:04:20.79\00:04:22.72 to do on the Sabbath. 00:04:22.76\00:04:24.36 But He said to them have ye not read 00:04:24.39\00:04:26.93 that David did when he was hungry, 00:04:26.96\00:04:30.30 he and those who were with him. 00:04:30.33\00:04:32.43 How they entered the House of the Lord 00:04:32.47\00:04:34.44 and ate the showbread, 00:04:34.47\00:04:35.80 which was not lawful for him to eat, 00:04:35.84\00:04:37.84 nor for those who were with him, 00:04:37.87\00:04:39.54 but only for the priests? 00:04:39.57\00:04:41.01 Or have you not read in the law, 00:04:41.04\00:04:43.68 of the Sabbath the priests in the temple 00:04:43.71\00:04:45.68 profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? 00:04:45.71\00:04:49.28 Yet I say to you, that in this place 00:04:49.32\00:04:51.52 there is one greater than the temple. 00:04:51.55\00:04:54.36 But if you'd known what this means, 00:04:54.39\00:04:55.99 I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, 00:04:56.02\00:04:58.39 you would not have condemned the guiltless. 00:04:58.43\00:05:00.20 For the Sabbath-- for the Son of Man, 00:05:00.23\00:05:03.16 this is the point, for the Son of Man 00:05:03.20\00:05:05.27 is the Lord even of the Sabbath. 00:05:05.30\00:05:07.00 Can I mention something else? 00:05:07.04\00:05:08.74 We've the next event that follows. What was that? 00:05:08.77\00:05:11.61 The same case, Jesus comes with the synagogue 00:05:11.64\00:05:14.34 and there is there a sick man 00:05:14.38\00:05:16.58 with paralyzed hand 00:05:16.61\00:05:18.01 and the same Jesus wants to heal that person 00:05:18.05\00:05:20.45 and the Pharisees, they criticize Him. 00:05:20.48\00:05:22.75 So we've this connection between rest and Sabbath. 00:05:22.78\00:05:25.05 Now, we're gonna see about His Sabbath keeping. 00:05:25.09\00:05:27.19 Yeah, so actually, these two events, 00:05:27.22\00:05:30.49 they really are follow up 00:05:31.73\00:05:34.36 on that concluding text of Revelation 11 00:05:34.40\00:05:37.20 to contrast in practical way, 00:05:37.23\00:05:39.40 the yoke, the Jesus offered to his disciples 00:05:39.43\00:05:42.90 and the yoke of the Pharisees 00:05:42.94\00:05:44.74 that was really heavy based on the rules, on details. 00:05:44.77\00:05:49.81 You know, that actually really that law became 00:05:49.84\00:05:53.18 a heavy burden to everybody 00:05:53.21\00:05:55.75 who tried to practice that law. 00:05:55.78\00:05:57.22 So the Sabbath-- the way Jesus uses Sabbath 00:05:57.25\00:06:00.76 and keeps the Sabbath is a window 00:06:00.79\00:06:02.76 which we're understanding. Now-- 00:06:02.79\00:06:04.13 You see the opening word is at that time 00:06:04.16\00:06:05.89 in the verse 11, at that time and what time? 00:06:05.93\00:06:08.30 The time when Jesus made the statement 00:06:08.33\00:06:10.57 "Take my yoke upon yourself". 00:06:10.60\00:06:12.33 At that time, this is what happened. 00:06:12.37\00:06:14.40 So, Jesus tried to teach people something. 00:06:14.44\00:06:16.10 Now it was Jesus regular practice 00:06:16.14\00:06:18.57 of preaching and healing. 00:06:18.61\00:06:20.64 We see some Sabbath healings here, 00:06:20.68\00:06:22.54 help us understand the connection. 00:06:22.58\00:06:24.25 Glenn, we've to advertise something 00:06:24.28\00:06:27.02 to emphasize something. 00:06:27.05\00:06:29.08 When people read the Gospel of Matthew, 00:06:29.12\00:06:30.65 they had the impression that Jesus tried 00:06:30.69\00:06:32.72 to do away with the law. 00:06:32.75\00:06:34.09 No, Jesus never intended that. 00:06:34.12\00:06:35.86 Remember the Sermon on the Mount, 00:06:35.89\00:06:37.23 "I did not come to abolish the law". 00:06:37.26\00:06:40.60 There is no any discussion 00:06:40.63\00:06:42.00 whether the law of God should be observed or not. 00:06:42.03\00:06:45.33 Here is what the question of the validity of the Sabbath. 00:06:45.37\00:06:48.77 Actually, Jesus tried to affirm the Sabbath. 00:06:48.80\00:06:52.71 He tried to make the Sabbath to be a delight 00:06:52.74\00:06:56.71 that holy day that people can really enjoy 00:06:56.75\00:07:00.35 and even if there are some people 00:07:00.38\00:07:02.32 who needed a special assistance, 00:07:02.35\00:07:04.45 people who needed a special help, 00:07:04.49\00:07:06.55 special healing on the Sabbath, 00:07:06.59\00:07:08.36 Jesus was willing to do it on the Sabbath, 00:07:08.39\00:07:11.89 to make that Sabbath 00:07:11.93\00:07:13.80 very memorable to those people 00:07:13.83\00:07:15.63 who had a special encounter 00:07:15.66\00:07:17.17 with Jesus Christ on that particular day. 00:07:17.20\00:07:19.00 But often times, we know that 00:07:19.03\00:07:20.40 He waited till the evening, sun down after, 00:07:20.44\00:07:23.47 but on some occasions. 00:07:23.51\00:07:24.97 So these are very intentional healings. 00:07:25.01\00:07:27.11 See we're dealing some Christians, 00:07:27.14\00:07:28.48 they said, you see Jesus tried to go 00:07:28.51\00:07:30.01 away with the Sabbath. 00:07:30.05\00:07:31.38 You see that's not the case. 00:07:31.41\00:07:32.75 But there're some people, they said, no, 00:07:32.78\00:07:34.35 but on Sabbath, we can do all kind of good works. 00:07:34.38\00:07:37.35 No, Jesus did not try to teach it. 00:07:37.39\00:07:39.72 Glenn, can you open the Gospel of Matthew? 00:07:39.75\00:07:43.22 Which is actually Chapter 8, is it verse 26? 00:07:44.69\00:07:48.43 No, 16. 00:07:48.46\00:07:49.86 Okay, 8:16? Yeah, Matthew 8:16. 00:07:49.90\00:07:52.80 Matthew 8:16. You see. 00:07:52.83\00:07:55.30 And we're finding more about what the usual practice was. 00:07:55.34\00:07:58.24 "When evening can come, they brought to him 00:07:58.27\00:08:00.51 many who were demon-possessed 00:08:00.54\00:08:02.01 and he cast out spirits with a word 00:08:02.04\00:08:03.98 and he healed all who were sick." 00:08:04.01\00:08:05.65 So what we're Finding--? 00:08:05.68\00:08:07.02 So, Jesus did not do regular healing on the Sabbath. 00:08:07.05\00:08:10.29 He did it during the week, 00:08:10.32\00:08:13.29 but Jesus always made exception, 00:08:13.32\00:08:16.22 people were the most important. 00:08:16.26\00:08:17.93 There were some special needs to restore 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.50 somebody's health or to help certain people. 00:08:20.53\00:08:22.96 Jesus did it even in the Sabbath, 00:08:23.00\00:08:24.67 but this was not his regular work that he did. 00:08:24.70\00:08:28.94 It's a marvelous thing to see God through Jesus. 00:08:30.34\00:08:34.31 Healing lives on the Sabbath day, 00:08:34.34\00:08:36.28 He just--is that compassion again? 00:08:36.31\00:08:38.25 He didn't want people suffering. 00:08:38.28\00:08:39.71 He saw people suffering and wanted to heal 00:08:39.75\00:08:42.78 and He's telling us something about following Jesus, 00:08:42.82\00:08:45.99 keeping the law, following God, 00:08:46.02\00:08:47.79 is demonstrated through His life. 00:08:47.82\00:08:49.16 Actually, this is what made now Pharisees 00:08:49.19\00:08:51.16 to be even more persistent and Jesus had to give 00:08:51.19\00:08:54.20 that warning to them, it's in verses 30 to 32. 00:08:54.23\00:08:58.83 Verse 30 and 32?
