Amen. 00:01:22.54\00:01:24.88 Well, Ranko, we've been moving through this Gospel of Matthew, 00:01:25.95\00:01:29.38 authored by God, written by Matthew 00:01:29.42\00:01:32.05 under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. 00:01:32.09\00:01:33.86 We've worked our way through the first few chapters, 00:01:33.89\00:01:36.59 all the way up through the Sermon on the Mount, 00:01:36.62\00:01:38.43 that's where we finished last time. 00:01:38.46\00:01:41.20 We had a chance to see Jesus 00:01:41.23\00:01:42.63 as the greatest teacher of all time. Yes. 00:01:42.66\00:01:45.07 The depth of His teachings, 00:01:45.10\00:01:46.67 the insights that He provided, powerful. 00:01:46.70\00:01:49.24 But now we're moving into Chapter 8. 00:01:49.27\00:01:50.91 What's ahead for us? 00:01:50.94\00:01:52.27 Yes, we saw already in Chapter 4, 00:01:52.31\00:01:57.38 that the Gospel indicates that the activities of Jesus 00:01:57.41\00:02:01.88 were made of His teachings. Yes. 00:02:01.92\00:02:04.49 And preachings, and then His healing 00:02:04.52\00:02:07.36 and other activities helping people. 00:02:07.39\00:02:11.09 In the last two programs, 00:02:11.13\00:02:13.06 we saw the first of the set of the teachings of Jesus, 00:02:13.09\00:02:17.07 the Sermon on the Mount. Right. 00:02:17.10\00:02:19.20 So, now after that, after that same formula 00:02:19.23\00:02:21.87 when Jesus finished all His sayings. 00:02:21.90\00:02:25.44 Now we have Jesus putting His teachings into practice. 00:02:25.47\00:02:29.84 So, we have Chapters 8 and 9, 00:02:29.88\00:02:32.25 where we see the healing and other activities of Jesus. 00:02:32.28\00:02:35.42 Let's be sure we didn't miss that, 00:02:35.45\00:02:36.79 putting His teachings into practice. 00:02:36.82\00:02:38.55 So, there's a close connection. Close connection between that. 00:02:38.59\00:02:40.52 Through His teachings and the activities. 00:02:40.56\00:02:42.22 So, give us an idea of the activities 00:02:42.26\00:02:44.19 that we find here in Chapter 8 and 9. 00:02:44.23\00:02:46.66 Yes, Chapter 8 and 9, 00:02:46.70\00:02:48.96 has very nice structure and very nice conclusion 00:02:49.00\00:02:51.70 that we will come in few moments there, 00:02:51.73\00:02:54.07 but it's organized nicely. 00:02:54.10\00:02:55.50 So, this section is about 00:02:55.54\00:02:57.24 the practical aspect of Jesus' Ministry, 00:02:57.27\00:02:59.91 but it's organized in very nice way. 00:02:59.94\00:03:02.31 And it goes in this way 00:03:02.34\00:03:03.68 "There is a miracle that Jesus does, 00:03:03.71\00:03:05.51 healing and then instructions about the discipleship, 00:03:05.55\00:03:10.82 then miracles of Jesus, then discipleship 00:03:10.85\00:03:13.56 and it goes on through all these Chapters. 00:03:13.59\00:03:15.92 This very significant in the light 00:03:17.33\00:03:19.03 would comes after Chapter 9 00:03:19.06\00:03:20.83 and we will see the concluding text of Chapter 9 00:03:20.86\00:03:23.16 is now Jesus sends His disciples. 00:03:23.20\00:03:25.80 So, whenever Jesus did some healings, 00:03:25.83\00:03:28.50 He wanted somehow to set an example to His disciples 00:03:28.54\00:03:33.21 what they're supposed to do, 00:03:33.24\00:03:34.81 to continue actually His ministry here-- 00:03:34.84\00:03:38.28 So, it's practical training in fact- 00:03:38.31\00:03:39.75 Very practical training, yes. All right, very good. 00:03:39.78\00:03:42.15 Is there a portion of script, 00:03:42.18\00:03:43.52 you would like us to read as we get started? 00:03:43.55\00:03:46.35 Actually Glenn, I would really like to start 00:03:46.39\00:03:49.09 with the concluding text of these two Chapters. Okay. 00:03:49.12\00:03:54.83 And we will come to this text again, 00:03:54.86\00:03:56.67 you know, to make connection with Chapter 10. 00:03:56.70\00:03:59.83 But our verses from 35 to 40 of Chapter 9. 00:03:59.87\00:04:04.27 All right Matthew 9:35 and following. Yes. 00:04:04.31\00:04:06.88 "Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, 00:04:06.91\00:04:09.74 teaching in their synagogues, 00:04:09.78\00:04:11.35 preaching the gospel of the kingdom, 00:04:11.38\00:04:13.48 and healing every sickness 00:04:13.52\00:04:15.65 and every disease among the people. 00:04:15.68\00:04:18.65 But when he saw the multitudes, 00:04:18.69\00:04:20.69 he was moved with compassion for them, 00:04:20.72\00:04:23.59 because they were weary and scattered like sheep 00:04:23.63\00:04:26.39 having no shepherd. 00:04:26.43\00:04:28.00 Then he said to his disciples, 00:04:28.03\00:04:29.96 "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 00:04:30.00\00:04:33.64 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest, 00:04:33.67\00:04:35.67 to send out labors into the harvest". 00:04:35.70\00:04:38.11 We saw earlier in Chapter 4:23 that Jesus 00:04:39.54\00:04:44.95 was going all around Galilee there and healing people. 00:04:44.98\00:04:48.05 And now 35, He is actually, 00:04:48.08\00:04:50.05 almost word by word repetition of this text, 00:04:50.09\00:04:53.39 which indicates that Chapter 4:23 00:04:53.42\00:04:57.26 and Chapter 9:29 they function as an envelope, 00:04:57.29\00:05:01.33 what we say inclusio. Okay. 00:05:01.36\00:05:04.63 The beginning and the conclusion is the same, 00:05:04.67\00:05:07.40 what comes between it's really, can we say a case study. 00:05:07.44\00:05:12.51 It's a practical application of this 00:05:12.54\00:05:15.54 that Jesus was going around teaching 00:05:15.58\00:05:17.85 and preaching and now healing there. 00:05:17.88\00:05:20.65 But they're like us as we-- we are not able 00:05:20.68\00:05:23.52 in these two Chapters to go through 00:05:23.55\00:05:26.69 all these healings activities of Jesus. 00:05:26.72\00:05:28.89 I believe that the viewers will do it for themselves. 00:05:28.92\00:05:32.46 But I would like to take few minutes 00:05:32.49\00:05:34.83 really to focus here on verse 36. 00:05:34.83\00:05:38.07 It sets the tone, it provides the framework 00:05:38.10\00:05:41.34 for everything that Jesus was doing. 00:05:41.37\00:05:43.44 It says "Seeing the people, He, Jesus felt compassion for them, 00:05:43.47\00:05:49.98 compassion for them, because they were distressed 00:05:50.01\00:05:53.52 and dispirited like sheep without the shepherds". 00:05:53.55\00:05:58.65 When Jesus did all those healing activities and helping people, 00:05:58.69\00:06:05.19 there was only one motive that moved Jesus to do it 00:06:05.23\00:06:09.73 and what was that? It was compassion. Compassion. 00:06:09.76\00:06:12.17 Now this word compassion we think of-- 00:06:12.20\00:06:14.14 we can break it down say compassions 00:06:14.17\00:06:16.00 literally a passion for someone else. 00:06:16.04\00:06:18.91 Help us understand the background of that word. 00:06:18.94\00:06:20.68 I see so many times even preachers, 00:06:20.71\00:06:22.68 when they preach about, about these text, 00:06:22.71\00:06:24.71 when they use the word compassion, 00:06:24.75\00:06:26.72 and the way how they refer to that, it's usually like pity. 00:06:26.75\00:06:30.72 But if we go to original languages, 00:06:31.79\00:06:34.46 the Greek word is prugismi, it's not really about pity. 00:06:34.49\00:06:40.70 If we want to translate that word in a literal way, 00:06:40.73\00:06:42.83 it means lets, can you translate 00:06:42.86\00:06:45.50 these text literally said "seeing people". 00:06:45.53\00:06:49.34 The inner organs of Jesus 00:06:50.77\00:06:53.48 they were moved, the inner organ. 00:06:53.51\00:06:57.55 You know in ancient times inner organs, 00:06:57.58\00:07:01.38 they played significant role in human lives, 00:07:01.42\00:07:04.15 that's ancient concept. 00:07:04.19\00:07:05.69 See we are so much Greek minded. 00:07:05.72\00:07:07.79 We use our mind everything. Yeah. 00:07:07.82\00:07:10.26 When we love, when we make a decision, 00:07:10.29\00:07:12.86 when decisions, when we, whatever we do, 00:07:12.89\00:07:15.43 it's always focus on our mind. 00:07:15.46\00:07:17.53 But if you go to the Bible, people think by their hearts, 00:07:17.57\00:07:22.44 people know by their hearts. 00:07:22.47\00:07:24.21 Whatever people do it's with their heart, 00:07:24.24\00:07:26.51 so inner organs were really the focus 00:07:26.54\00:07:30.88 of the entire human personality. 00:07:30.91\00:07:34.48 You know, we have something from the practical human life, 00:07:34.52\00:07:38.85 that, that we have practical indication 00:07:38.89\00:07:41.59 what it means organs to be moved. 00:07:41.62\00:07:43.86 You're telling us sensitive nurturing, caring aspect. 00:07:43.89\00:07:47.73 So, its mother, mother child. 00:07:47.76\00:07:49.53 You know, you know when you have a mother 00:07:49.56\00:07:51.40 something happens to the child, what happens? 00:07:51.43\00:07:53.23 The pain that she feels it's not here, 00:07:53.27\00:07:55.74 the pain is inside. 00:07:55.77\00:07:57.34 You feel like your inner organs are moved. Yes, yes. 00:07:57.37\00:08:01.58 Actually this is exactly what happened here 00:08:01.61\00:08:04.75 with reference to Jesus. 00:08:04.78\00:08:06.11 When Jesus saw the people, when He saw their needs, 00:08:06.15\00:08:10.12 with so many sick people, so many, 00:08:10.15\00:08:12.05 Remember another occasion people are hungry. 00:08:12.09\00:08:14.62 People are oppressed with those heavy taxes, 00:08:14.66\00:08:16.83 when Jesus saw, but much more. 00:08:16.86\00:08:19.03 People are oppressed by that burden of sin. 00:08:19.06\00:08:23.33 When Jesus saw them, 00:08:23.37\00:08:24.93 the Bible says His inner organs were moved. 00:08:24.97\00:08:29.10 And Jesus decided to help them, 00:08:29.14\00:08:30.67 well, what kind of a Savior 00:08:30.71\00:08:33.11 we have here in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:08:33.14\00:08:35.54 And this is exactly what I was thinking, 00:08:35.58\00:08:37.38 you know, we may feel like 00:08:37.41\00:08:38.75 we are suffering, we are struggling. 00:08:38.78\00:08:41.08 Jesus senses that compassion, He reaches out to us, 00:08:41.12\00:08:44.32 He feels our pain. 00:08:44.35\00:08:46.25 We say that so quickly, but it's a powerful promise. 00:08:46.29\00:08:49.76 You know, I'm asking myself a question, 00:08:49.79\00:08:53.16 you know, the early Christians 00:08:53.19\00:08:54.50 the New Testament was not composed yet. 00:08:54.56\00:08:57.23 Evidently Christians in Antioch of Syria, 00:08:57.27\00:09:00.27 they were the primary audience of that, of that Gospel. 00:09:01.40\00:09:04.34 You know, the only picture of Jesus they had 00:09:04.37\00:09:07.08 was the portrayal of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:09:07.11\00:09:11.71 What kind of Jesus they could understand and believe in. 00:09:11.75\00:09:16.89 Jesus who cared for their personal needs. 00:09:16.92\00:09:21.26 I think I mentioned this to you before, 00:09:22.72\00:09:24.99 I like to mention to the viewers. 00:09:25.03\00:09:26.59 When I was a young pastor, 00:09:26.63\00:09:28.43 I was very nervous to stand 00:09:28.46\00:09:30.53 in front of people and to preach. 00:09:30.57\00:09:32.90 I mean, this was for me a terrible thing, 00:09:32.93\00:09:34.50 that's a reason I didn't want to go to pastoral ministry. 00:09:34.54\00:09:37.11 And then there was one elderly pastor, 00:09:37.14\00:09:39.07 he tried to encourage me. 00:09:39.11\00:09:40.61 He said "Ranko, why are you nervous?" 00:09:40.64\00:09:43.45 I said, "Are you nervous?" 00:09:43.48\00:09:44.81 No, I'm never, never nervous, I said how is that so. 00:09:44.85\00:09:47.18 He said, when I stand in front of people, 00:09:47.22\00:09:49.02 when I want to serve them and to preach them, 00:09:49.05\00:09:51.29 I just imagine that I have pumpkins in front of myself. 00:09:51.32\00:09:54.36 Pumpkins? Pumpkins. 00:09:54.39\00:09:56.02 Their heads like pumpkins. 00:09:56.06\00:09:57.49 So then I reacted, you know, I was young pastor to talk 00:09:57.53\00:10:00.83 and I say boy what kind of sermon 00:10:00.86\00:10:04.07 did you preach to those pumpkins. 00:10:04.10\00:10:06.94 You see if you really want to reach 00:10:06.97\00:10:09.27 the heart of the people, they are not pumpkins. 00:10:09.30\00:10:12.97 They are living beings, that they are humans 00:10:13.01\00:10:15.24 who have their particular needs. 00:10:15.28\00:10:17.31 When Jesus saw those people, He don't see pumpkins, 00:10:17.35\00:10:19.85 He saw human needs with particular needs. 00:10:19.88\00:10:22.15 And His inner organs were moved in order to help them. 00:10:22.18\00:10:25.35 It's a beautiful picture of the caring Savior, 00:10:25.39\00:10:27.52 who senses the pain of this world 00:10:27.56\00:10:30.49 and He's the same Lord and Savior today. 00:10:30.53\00:10:32.63 He continues to respond to the needs of people in this world. 00:10:32.66\00:10:37.07 Now it talks about them being like sheep without a shepherd, 00:10:37.10\00:10:40.07 weary and scattered. Yes. 00:10:40.10\00:10:42.04 Instead of going now to all these activities of Jesus, 00:10:43.44\00:10:47.61 I would like just to focus Glenn, to one particular, 00:10:47.64\00:10:50.91 it's representative case for all other healing activities 00:10:50.95\00:10:54.12 is Chapter 9 verses 1 to 8 00:10:54.15\00:10:56.22 and I would appreciate if you, if you read these verses. 00:10:56.25\00:10:58.72 So we're looking at several, 00:10:58.75\00:11:00.32 we've looked at several miracles. 00:11:00.36\00:11:03.26 Let's take a sample now. 00:11:04.33\00:11:05.66 But this one, this one is representative. Okay. 00:11:05.69\00:11:07.93 "So He got into a boat and crossed over, 00:11:08.80\00:11:10.90 and came to His own city. 00:11:10.93\00:11:13.54 Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. 00:11:13.57\00:11:16.14 When Jesus saw their faith, 00:11:16.17\00:11:19.04 He said to the paralytic, "Son, be of good cheer, 00:11:19.07\00:11:22.14 your sins are forgiven you." 00:11:22.18\00:11:23.85 And at once some of the scribes within themselves said, 00:11:23.88\00:11:27.42 "This Man blasphemes!" 00:11:27.45\00:11:29.08 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, 00:11:29.12\00:11:31.69 "Why do you think evil in your hearts? 00:11:31.72\00:11:33.62 For which is easier, to say Your sins are forgiven you,' 00:11:33.66\00:11:36.49 or to say, 'Arise and walk'? 00:11:36.52\00:11:39.79 But that you may know that the Son of God 00:11:39.83\00:11:41.33 has power on earth to forgive sins." 00:11:41.36\00:11:44.13 Then He said to the paralytic, 00:11:44.17\00:11:45.83 "Arise, take up your bed, and go to your home." 00:11:45.87\00:11:49.00 And he arose and departed to his house. 00:11:49.04\00:11:51.27 And when the multitudes saw 00:11:51.31\00:11:52.64 they marveled and glorified God, 00:11:52.67\00:11:55.28 who had given such power to men." 00:11:55.31\00:11:57.41 Okay, so what do we have here? 00:11:57.45\00:11:59.25 There is a sick person, paralytic. 00:11:59.28\00:12:01.78 What did he need? He need a heeling. Not all. 00:12:01.82\00:12:05.35 Physical healing that's and much more. 00:12:05.39\00:12:08.59 That's what he needed. 00:12:08.62\00:12:09.96 But can you imagine instead of telling 00:12:09.99\00:12:12.43 the person get up and be healed, Jesus tells him 00:12:12.46\00:12:16.87 "Your sins are forgiven". 00:12:16.90\00:12:20.17 And that's what provoked their action of the Pharisees. 00:12:20.20\00:12:23.47 This is a representative case for all other healings. 00:12:23.51\00:12:26.71 You know, the normal word 00:12:26.74\00:12:28.51 for healing in Greek is "Therapeo". 00:12:28.54\00:12:31.48 That is used therapy, use in medicine. 00:12:33.52\00:12:36.08 But there is another word which is actually the keyword 00:12:36.12\00:12:39.45 in the Gospel for the healing activities of Jesus, 00:12:39.49\00:12:42.22 and that's the Greek word "sozo". Sozo. 00:12:42.26\00:12:44.99 Sozo can be translated into English in two different ways. 00:12:45.03\00:12:48.63 It can be translated as save, to save, 00:12:48.66\00:12:52.47 or can be translated as to heal. 00:12:52.50\00:12:54.84 So, so many times when you, 00:12:56.34\00:12:57.84 when the word is used in the Gospels, 00:12:57.87\00:12:59.87 you don't know which word to translate. 00:12:59.91\00:13:02.18 So, which concept is correct? 00:13:04.08\00:13:06.35 This case indicates that actually 00:13:06.38\00:13:08.82 the word has both meanings in-- the two meanings 00:13:08.85\00:13:12.89 in the healing activities of Jesus. 00:13:12.92\00:13:15.32 When Jesus healed people physically, 00:13:15.36\00:13:19.26 He also healed them spiritually. 00:13:19.29\00:13:22.83 When people are forgiven, they were healed. 00:13:22.86\00:13:26.87 When people were healed, they were at the same time forgiven. 00:13:26.90\00:13:31.74 There is a close relationship in the Bible 00:13:31.77\00:13:35.44 between physical and spiritual. 00:13:35.48\00:13:38.01 And that's the holistic view- That's the holistic view of- 00:13:38.05\00:13:40.62 So, Jesus with His compassion, 00:13:40.65\00:13:42.52 this compassion is not just for their physical condition. 00:13:42.55\00:13:45.72 He cares about this man's 00:13:45.75\00:13:47.49 and, of course, when He says that they could, 00:13:47.52\00:13:50.16 that he should be healed, 00:13:50.19\00:13:51.53 it raises the issue of Jesus identity. 00:13:51.56\00:13:53.53 What right does He have to-- 00:13:53.56\00:13:54.86 Glenn, just to take few moments. Okay. 00:13:54.93\00:13:56.73 Before we, we make a break. 00:13:56.77\00:13:59.17 What is the event that follows this healing of Jesus, 00:13:59.20\00:14:03.30 it's the calling of Matthew. Matthew. 00:14:03.34\00:14:05.67 Matthew was a tax collector there, 00:14:05.71\00:14:07.48 cheating on people, stealing money from people. 00:14:07.51\00:14:10.38 He did not have a problem with physical health. 00:14:10.41\00:14:15.38 But Jesus comes gives him a call, 00:14:15.42\00:14:17.55 that person had remorse, 00:14:17.59\00:14:19.02 that person has spiritual struggle. 00:14:19.05\00:14:21.36 And then Jesus calls him, follow me, 00:14:21.39\00:14:24.29 that person needed spiritual healing 00:14:24.33\00:14:28.20 "sozo" the word is applied. 00:14:28.23\00:14:30.10 You see after the spiritual healing 00:14:30.13\00:14:32.00 and his sins are forgiven. 00:14:32.03\00:14:33.70 Finally he had also the physical healing 00:14:33.74\00:14:36.07 that impacted his entire life. 00:14:36.10\00:14:38.37 Oh, good, this is a wonderful view of a compassionate Savior. 00:14:38.41\00:14:41.18 We're gonna come right back for more right after our break. 00:14:41.21\00:14:44.21
