We're back in the Gospel of Matthew, 00:00:01.33\00:00:02.66 exploring the meaning of Matthew 5:48. 00:00:02.70\00:00:05.13 Ranko Stefanovic, help us to understand 00:00:05.17\00:00:06.94 a little bit more of the context leading up to this verse. 00:00:06.97\00:00:10.27 So we saw that Jesus is dealing here with popular concept, 00:00:10.31\00:00:15.28 what is right and what is not right. 00:00:15.31\00:00:17.61 And He mentions that the followers, 00:00:17.65\00:00:19.65 His followers, the citizens of the kingdom, 00:00:19.68\00:00:22.32 they don't behave according to the popular concept of morality. 00:00:22.35\00:00:27.72 Their relationship with God, 00:00:27.76\00:00:29.79 the right living is defined by God's standards. 00:00:29.82\00:00:33.63 And now Jesus comes to the last synthesis. 00:00:33.66\00:00:37.03 Glenn, Let's go to verse 48, what He said. 00:00:37.07\00:00:39.97 He said-- Verse 48. All right. 00:00:40.00\00:00:41.40 48, he says, "Therefore you are to be perfect 00:00:41.44\00:00:46.27 as your Heavenly Father is perfect." 00:00:46.31\00:00:50.25 You ask about this text. 00:00:50.28\00:00:51.68 Glenn, what is probably the keyword here in this text? 00:00:51.71\00:00:55.78 Well, the first word "Therefore." 00:00:55.82\00:00:57.32 "Therefore." What does it mean "Therefore?" 00:00:57.35\00:00:58.99 Now many people say the keyword is perfect. 00:00:59.02\00:01:01.36 Glenn, you please very often. 00:01:01.39\00:01:02.89 Can you stand there on the pulpit and begin sermon, 00:01:02.92\00:01:05.33 and you begin sermon "Therefore"? 00:01:05.36\00:01:08.23 We would have no context. 00:01:08.26\00:01:09.60 There's no context, "Therefore" always comes 00:01:09.63\00:01:11.67 after something that was said before and you build it. 00:01:11.70\00:01:14.74 Actually another word for "Therefore", 00:01:14.77\00:01:16.40 it means, in the light of the foregoing 00:01:16.44\00:01:18.44 what we've just said. 00:01:18.47\00:01:19.81 Let me now make a conclusion. 00:01:19.84\00:01:21.74 So it means this word, 00:01:21.78\00:01:23.11 "You are to be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect." 00:01:23.14\00:01:26.28 Is the conclusion, what Jesus said before, 00:01:28.05\00:01:30.32 and it is found in the context of the last, these antithesis. 00:01:30.35\00:01:34.02 So, can you read from verse 43. 00:01:34.06\00:01:36.79 "You've heard that it was said, 00:01:36.83\00:01:38.96 'You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.' 00:01:38.99\00:01:41.20 But I say it to you, love your enemies 00:01:41.23\00:01:43.37 and bless those who curse you, 00:01:43.40\00:01:44.77 do good to those who hate you, 00:01:44.80\00:01:46.97 and pray for those who spitefully use you 00:01:47.00\00:01:49.24 and persecute you that you may be 00:01:49.27\00:01:51.81 sons of your Father in heaven. 00:01:51.84\00:01:54.24 For He makes the Sun rise on the evil and the good, 00:01:54.28\00:01:57.71 and sends rain on the just and the unjust. 00:01:57.75\00:02:01.08 For if you love those who love you, 00:02:01.12\00:02:02.52 what reward have you? 00:02:02.55\00:02:04.19 Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 00:02:04.22\00:02:07.46 And if you greet your brethren only, 00:02:07.49\00:02:10.29 what do you do more than others? 00:02:10.33\00:02:12.06 Do not even the tax collectors do this? 00:02:12.09\00:02:14.83 Therefore, you shall be perfect, 00:02:14.86\00:02:17.57 just as your Father in heaven is perfect." 00:02:17.60\00:02:19.47 Okay, let's address one issue, 00:02:19.50\00:02:21.87 it was number of years ago, 00:02:21.90\00:02:23.67 that some people who read the Gospel they said, 00:02:23.71\00:02:26.01 "You see the Gospel, 00:02:26.04\00:02:27.38 they don't give the historical reality." 00:02:27.41\00:02:29.54 Among the Jewish people at the time of Jesus, 00:02:29.58\00:02:31.88 there was never, never teaching. 00:02:31.91\00:02:35.22 "You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemies." 00:02:35.25\00:02:37.89 However, with the discovery of the Qumran writings, 00:02:37.92\00:02:41.72 it came to the light that those people, 00:02:41.76\00:02:44.43 they really were teaching is 00:02:44.46\00:02:46.33 "You should hate the sons of darkness 00:02:46.36\00:02:50.50 and love only the sons of light." 00:02:50.53\00:02:53.37 So finally it was brought to the light 00:02:53.40\00:02:55.70 that actually this concept was very much present 00:02:55.74\00:02:59.81 among the Jewish people at the time of the Jesus. 00:02:59.84\00:03:02.58 And now Jesus goes on what is that we have here. 00:03:02.61\00:03:05.85 What is the popular standard according to Jesus? 00:03:06.98\00:03:09.15 The popular standard is that "You love your enemies," 00:03:09.18\00:03:14.56 that "You don't love your enemies. 00:03:14.59\00:03:15.92 You just love those who are very, very close to you. 00:03:15.96\00:03:19.69 And isn't that the way much of the world operates today. 00:03:19.73\00:03:22.20 We see many societies and cultures 00:03:22.23\00:03:23.93 that still practice that way. 00:03:23.97\00:03:25.60 Okay, let me tell you, Jesus said, 00:03:25.63\00:03:27.84 if I'm a Christian and I'm white, 00:03:27.87\00:03:32.37 and I love only people who are of same skin color as I am, 00:03:32.41\00:03:37.21 then what is the difference between me 00:03:37.25\00:03:39.28 and those who are not Christians? 00:03:39.31\00:03:40.88 This is what they're doing. 00:03:40.92\00:03:42.82 If I like only people who love me, 00:03:42.85\00:03:45.82 who treat me well, who are very close to me, 00:03:45.85\00:03:48.59 neglect others people, that's what everybody does. 00:03:48.62\00:03:51.53 Yeah. Believe me, even, even the most criminals, 00:03:51.56\00:03:55.20 they know to love their families and to their friends. 00:03:55.23\00:03:58.27 But you see, the difference between Christians 00:03:58.30\00:04:01.17 and those who do not follow Jesus Christ 00:04:01.20\00:04:03.61 is that they love both good and bad people. 00:04:03.64\00:04:07.44 They love tax collectors, they love the righteous people, 00:04:07.48\00:04:10.28 they love everybody because of that love of Jesus 00:04:10.31\00:04:13.31 that is in their life. 00:04:13.35\00:04:14.75 And after that... and then Jesus said in verse 47, 00:04:14.78\00:04:19.09 "If you greet only your brothers, 00:04:19.12\00:04:23.32 what are you better than Gentiles." 00:04:23.36\00:04:25.09 Because they are doing, doing in the same way. 00:04:25.13\00:04:28.03 Verse 46 "If you love only those who love you, 00:04:29.10\00:04:33.60 who respect you, what reward do you have? 00:04:33.64\00:04:37.51 Do not even the tax collectors do the same?" 00:04:37.54\00:04:40.84 It seems, Ranko, that you're saying 00:04:40.88\00:04:42.78 in many cases people were saying 00:04:42.81\00:04:44.25 "Well, let me compare my love 00:04:44.28\00:04:45.61 with what everybody else is doing?" Yeah. 00:04:45.65\00:04:47.68 But Jesus is now entering, introducing a new measurement, 00:04:47.72\00:04:51.79 "Don't measure yourself by what everyone else is doing", 00:04:51.82\00:04:54.22 but here it says, "As your Father in Heaven." 00:04:54.26\00:04:56.86 Apparently the Father loves differently with the rain, 00:04:56.89\00:04:59.86 and the just and the unjust. 00:04:59.89\00:05:01.26 The Father treats people differently. 00:05:01.30\00:05:03.30 You see what we have here is, my Christianity, 00:05:03.33\00:05:08.27 my relations with people is not defined by the popular culture. 00:05:08.30\00:05:12.77 Yes. By the popular behavior, 00:05:12.81\00:05:14.24 and attitude that people have in the world, 00:05:14.28\00:05:16.88 is defined by the way how God treats people. 00:05:16.91\00:05:20.55 And how is that God treats people in verse 45, 00:05:20.58\00:05:24.42 "So that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; 00:05:24.45\00:05:27.82 for He causes the Sun to rise on the evil and the good, 00:05:27.86\00:05:31.69 and sends the rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." 00:05:31.73\00:05:34.03 And now let's go to verse 48, "Therefore," 00:05:34.10\00:05:38.93 if God loves old people, 00:05:38.97\00:05:42.84 good and bad, righteous and unrighteous, 00:05:42.87\00:05:45.54 God loves, therefore you are supposed to be perfect 00:05:45.57\00:05:52.55 as your Father who is in Heaven. 00:05:52.58\00:05:54.28 So verse 48, Glenn, is not about the moral perfection 00:05:54.32\00:05:59.15 as God is sinless, I must become sinless. 00:05:59.19\00:06:02.79 If that's the text, then Jesus puts 00:06:02.82\00:06:04.89 something to us which is impossible. 00:06:04.93\00:06:07.60 Jesus never taught it. 00:06:07.66\00:06:09.10 Actually the same text, you remember that we mentioned 00:06:09.13\00:06:12.27 that there is another version 00:06:12.30\00:06:13.64 of the "Sermon on The Mount" in the Gospel of Luke. 00:06:13.67\00:06:15.90 In Chapter 6, verse 36 of the Gospel of Luke, 00:06:15.94\00:06:19.77 the same statement, the same quote that Jesus made says, 00:06:19.81\00:06:23.95 "Be merciful just as your Father is merciful." 00:06:23.98\00:06:30.32 This is what perfection is. 00:06:30.35\00:06:31.75 It means, treat people, be perfect in your attitude 00:06:31.79\00:06:36.22 toward people as God is with regard. 00:06:36.26\00:06:38.86 You know, there is an old Gospel song 00:06:38.89\00:06:40.23 that has come to my mind as you're sharing that, 00:06:40.26\00:06:42.13 there is a wideness in God's mercy. Yes. 00:06:42.16\00:06:44.53 Sometimes we as Christians haven't reflected that wideness, 00:06:44.57\00:06:47.97 that generosity, that graciousness of God. 00:06:48.00\00:06:52.94 Ranko, we don't have much more time-- 00:06:52.97\00:06:54.31 But Glenn, Glenn, when I know how God is patience, 00:06:54.34\00:06:58.18 patient with me, I know what God did for me, my sin 00:06:58.21\00:07:01.88 despite the fact that I did not deserve it 00:07:01.92\00:07:04.75 and now I had become a Christian 00:07:04.79\00:07:07.39 and I try to put people down, 00:07:07.42\00:07:09.56 because of their shortcomings, because of sins. 00:07:09.59\00:07:12.43 No, Jesus said, "Be merciful as your Father is merciful." 00:07:12.46\00:07:18.03 All right, where else do we need to go? 00:07:19.73\00:07:21.40 We have to go to the rest of the Sermon on the Mount" 00:07:21.44\00:07:23.27 in a few minutes that is left. 00:07:23.30\00:07:25.47 Actually the entire "Sermon on the Mount" 00:07:25.51\00:07:27.41 is it goes according to so called chiastic structure. 00:07:27.44\00:07:31.61 When the first part matches the last part, 00:07:31.65\00:07:33.78 the next one, the next one, 00:07:33.82\00:07:35.35 and we come to the center, 00:07:35.38\00:07:36.72 center usually the most important. 00:07:36.75\00:07:38.52 Do you know what comes at the center 00:07:38.55\00:07:39.92 of "The Sermon on the Mount?" 00:07:39.95\00:07:41.29 I have here this chiastic structure in my notes, 00:07:41.32\00:07:43.73 actually is the Lord's prayer. 00:07:43.76\00:07:46.59 Do you know what is at the center of the Lord's prayer? 00:07:46.63\00:07:51.00 It's how to forgive to people, 00:07:51.03\00:07:53.77 forgive them their debts as God has forgiven to us our debts. 00:07:53.80\00:07:59.84 Actually, this is really what the entire sermon is all about. 00:07:59.87\00:08:03.88 As we are making survey through that is what Jesus, 00:08:03.91\00:08:07.82 Jesus try to show in rest of the sermon is, 00:08:07.85\00:08:11.05 when we have relationship with God, 00:08:11.09\00:08:13.36 when we are the citizens of the kingdom. 00:08:13.39\00:08:17.19 when we pray, it will not be public to make display, 00:08:17.23\00:08:22.13 we are praying to God. Okay. 00:08:22.16\00:08:24.50 When we help people, it will not to be 00:08:24.53\00:08:26.77 because I want my business to prosper, 00:08:26.80\00:08:29.64 because I see human needs, I want to help. 00:08:29.67\00:08:32.11 When I fast, it's because of my relationship with God. 00:08:32.14\00:08:35.41 It's not to make, to make it public. 00:08:35.44\00:08:37.81 When I belong to God, the end of Chapter 6, 00:08:37.85\00:08:42.22 I don't worry about tomorrow, 00:08:42.25\00:08:44.85 I plan my life what I will do tomorrow. 00:08:44.89\00:08:48.22 I try to organize my life but I don't worry 00:08:48.26\00:08:51.59 because all my life is put into God's hands. 00:08:51.63\00:08:56.40 I know that God cares as he cares 00:08:56.43\00:08:58.27 according to the end of this text. 00:08:58.30\00:09:00.74 God cares for birds, 00:09:00.77\00:09:02.27 God cares for grass in the field, 00:09:02.30\00:09:04.74 God cares for flowers, etcetera. 00:09:04.77\00:09:08.08 God cares for me and Jesus said 00:09:08.11\00:09:10.95 "But seek first the kingdom," 00:09:10.98\00:09:14.18 we are the citizens of the kingdom. 00:09:14.22\00:09:16.08 "Seek the kingdom and His righteousness 00:09:16.12\00:09:19.19 and all these things will be provided to you." 00:09:19.22\00:09:22.46 There is this constant balance between 00:09:22.49\00:09:25.13 the vertical and the horizontal, 00:09:25.16\00:09:27.30 our relationship with others, our relationship with God. 00:09:27.30\00:09:29.90 And they are constantly intersecting 00:09:29.93\00:09:31.40 here throughout the sermon. 00:09:31.43\00:09:32.77 And this sorted relationship with God 00:09:32.80\00:09:34.94 always results this sorted relationship 00:09:34.97\00:09:37.51 with fellow human beings. 00:09:37.54\00:09:40.21 Now we have the conclusion of the "Sermon on the Mount." 00:09:40.24\00:09:41.98 All right. Let's go to it. 00:09:42.01\00:09:43.35 Do you remember how we began the sermon? 00:09:43.38\00:09:45.28 There is the difference between those 00:09:45.31\00:09:47.12 whose life is defined by their relationship with God, 00:09:49.05\00:09:54.12 they are blessed, they have a joy in these life 00:09:54.16\00:09:58.53 and from those whose journey these lives 00:09:58.56\00:10:02.43 is defined by external circumstances. 00:10:02.46\00:10:05.17 Now this is exactly how the "Sermon on the Mount" concludes. 00:10:05.20\00:10:08.74 Glenn, can you do it? Very-- 00:10:08.77\00:10:11.41 Okay, let's go to story of the two builders. 00:10:11.44\00:10:13.27 Twenty four. 00:10:13.31\00:10:14.64 Matthew 7:24, "Therefore whoever hears 00:10:14.68\00:10:16.64 these sayings of Mine, and does them, 00:10:16.68\00:10:18.88 I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock, 00:10:18.91\00:10:21.98 and the rain descended and the floods came, 00:10:22.02\00:10:24.02 and the winds blew and beat on that house, 00:10:24.05\00:10:26.29 and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 00:10:26.32\00:10:30.06 But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine 00:10:30.09\00:10:31.79 and does not do them, will be like a foolish man 00:10:31.83\00:10:34.50 who built his house on the sand, 00:10:34.56\00:10:35.90 and the rain descend, and the floods came, 00:10:35.93\00:10:38.33 and the winds blew and beat on that house and it fell. 00:10:38.37\00:10:41.54 And great was its fall. 00:10:41.57\00:10:44.07 And so it was, when Jesus ended these sayings, 00:10:44.11\00:10:46.41 that the people were astonished at His teaching, 00:10:46.44\00:10:48.58 for He taught them as one having authority, 00:10:48.61\00:10:51.35 and not as the scribes." 00:10:51.38\00:10:52.71 So, Glenn, we have here two houses and two builders. 00:10:52.75\00:10:57.12 Okay, one house is built on sand, 00:10:57.15\00:10:59.12 you know, when we were in Israel there. 00:10:59.15\00:11:01.36 To build on the sand it's so convenient, 00:11:01.39\00:11:03.22 you just do quickly there in the sand, etcetera. 00:11:03.26\00:11:05.49 you put there, you can build 00:11:05.53\00:11:06.86 that house very, very fast, etcetera. 00:11:06.90\00:11:09.16 But in Palestine in the time of Jesus, 00:11:09.20\00:11:11.30 if you wanted to have a stable house, 00:11:11.33\00:11:13.47 you have to carry all that material 00:11:13.50\00:11:15.17 on your shoulder there on the rock. 00:11:15.20\00:11:16.67 It was very inconvenient. Yes. 00:11:16.71\00:11:18.34 And finally, you build those two houses. 00:11:18.37\00:11:20.44 There is no difference between the two houses. 00:11:20.48\00:11:22.34 It seems. There is no difference. 00:11:23.81\00:11:25.71 Yeah. They're all etcetera. 00:11:25.75\00:11:27.08 But how do you know about the quality of those houses. 00:11:28.45\00:11:30.92 Jesus said, when the storm comes, 00:11:30.95\00:11:34.82 when the flood comes, only the house that is built 00:11:34.86\00:11:38.89 on the foundation of Jesus Christ on the rock 00:11:38.93\00:11:42.23 because in the Bible God is the rock. 00:11:42.26\00:11:45.13 Jesus is the rock. 00:11:45.17\00:11:47.00 Only the house that is built on him, 00:11:47.04\00:11:49.20 you see the sand are the external circumstances of life. 00:11:49.24\00:11:52.84 If my Christianity, if my happiness is built 00:11:52.87\00:11:57.78 on the popular concept of the world in which I live. 00:11:57.81\00:12:01.48 Build on external circumstances, 00:12:01.52\00:12:04.42 of course, I can be good Christian 00:12:04.45\00:12:06.52 when everything is okay. 00:12:06.55\00:12:08.26 But when hardship comes into my life, 00:12:08.29\00:12:11.09 then the difference will be shown. 00:12:11.13\00:12:14.10 Actually, it is with these two metaphors 00:12:14.10\00:12:17.37 that Jesus makes an appeal to His listeners to tell them, 00:12:17.40\00:12:22.50 "You have to make the choice, what is the foundation? 00:12:22.54\00:12:27.51 On which you are building the house of your life." 00:12:27.54\00:12:31.18 It's a great question for each one of us, Ranko 00:12:31.21\00:12:33.05 to think about how we're building our lives? 00:12:33.08\00:12:35.38 What's our foundation? 00:12:35.42\00:12:37.22 Glenn, I would like to conclude with this, 00:12:37.25\00:12:39.72 to invite our viewers-- is the question is, 00:12:39.75\00:12:43.36 what is the foundation 00:12:43.39\00:12:45.33 upon which you are building your house? 00:12:45.36\00:12:49.00 I know that in my life, 00:12:49.03\00:12:51.07 so many times I built on the external circumstances. 00:12:51.10\00:12:55.04 When accepted Jesus Christ as my personal savior, 00:12:55.07\00:12:58.41 everything made the difference. 00:12:58.44\00:12:59.87 Please, choose Jesus Christ today. 00:12:59.91\00:13:03.04
