Hi, I'm Glenn Russell. 00:00:22.25\00:00:23.59 Welcome to our program, 00:00:23.62\00:00:25.39 exploring the wonderful Book of Matthew. 00:00:25.42\00:00:28.82 It's part of the 3ABN series 00:00:28.86\00:00:30.39 entitled "The Books of the Book." 00:00:30.43\00:00:32.86 I like you to meet our guest, teacher, Dr. Ranko Stefanovic. 00:00:32.89\00:00:37.00 Ranko, you teach at 00:00:37.03\00:00:38.37 Andrews University Theological Seminary. 00:00:38.40\00:00:40.94 We're exploring a fascinating book, 00:00:40.97\00:00:42.54 what draws you to this Gospel of Matthew? 00:00:42.57\00:00:44.61 You've been mentioning 00:00:44.64\00:00:45.97 how it's one that you've been teaching this for a few years 00:00:46.01\00:00:49.11 and does it get old, 00:00:49.14\00:00:50.65 does it get to something like where you feel you know it all, 00:00:50.68\00:00:52.98 are you still discovering new things? 00:00:53.01\00:00:54.75 Actually, I have been teaching Gospel of Matthew 00:00:54.78\00:00:56.52 for about 17 years, 00:00:56.55\00:00:59.02 and every time when I teach that class 00:00:59.05\00:01:03.22 I always something to learn for my students, 00:01:03.26\00:01:05.46 it's a wonderful book. 00:01:05.49\00:01:06.83 Of course, every Gospel is beautiful in its own way. 00:01:06.86\00:01:10.47 Every part of scripture is that way, isn't it? 00:01:10.50\00:01:12.37 Oh yeah. The more we explore, 00:01:12.40\00:01:13.74 the more God keeps bringing us new treasures. 00:01:13.77\00:01:15.90 It's a wonderful gift. 00:01:15.94\00:01:17.51 Let's begin with prayer, 00:01:17.54\00:01:18.87 as we continue in our study of scripture. 00:01:18.91\00:01:21.81 Lord, we ask that You will guide us. 00:01:21.84\00:01:24.25 We need You to teach us. 00:01:24.28\00:01:25.75 We cannot know You except 00:01:25.78\00:01:27.75 that You have chosen to reveal yourself to us. 00:01:27.78\00:01:30.75 May we treasure this gift of revelation. 00:01:30.79\00:01:33.56 The Revelation of Jesus our Savior 00:01:33.59\00:01:35.96 through the pages of scripture. 00:01:35.99\00:01:37.79 In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. 00:01:37.83\00:01:41.40 All right, Ranko, we have been leading up 00:01:41.43\00:01:43.93 to this great passage we're going to get into today. 00:01:43.97\00:01:47.24 We've seen Jesus began his ministry with the Baptism, 00:01:47.27\00:01:51.31 taken into the wilderness and tempted, 00:01:51.34\00:01:53.54 and then He begins His ministry in Galilee. 00:01:53.58\00:01:55.68 Now we come to Matthew Chapter 5. 00:01:55.71\00:01:58.91 Tell us a little bit about this. 00:01:58.95\00:02:02.45 It was earlier in our series 00:02:02.48\00:02:06.89 in introducing the Gospel of Matthew, 00:02:06.92\00:02:08.52 we saw that the emphasis of the Gospel of Matthew 00:02:08.56\00:02:11.53 is on the two-fold aspect of Jesus ministry. 00:02:11.56\00:02:16.43 Jesus ministry consisted 00:02:16.46\00:02:17.87 according to the Gospel of Matthew 00:02:17.90\00:02:19.23 in teaching and preaching 00:02:19.27\00:02:21.97 and healing people, and helping them in their needs. 00:02:22.00\00:02:27.24 Helping them in a practical way. 00:02:27.28\00:02:30.31 This is how the Gospel of Matthew is organized. 00:02:30.35\00:02:32.95 We mentioned that Matthew consist of five major blocks 00:02:32.98\00:02:38.62 and here we are dealing with the first major block, 00:02:38.65\00:02:42.19 which is known as "The Sermon on the Mount" 00:02:42.22\00:02:45.26 Chapters 5 to 7. 00:02:45.29\00:02:47.73 Do you remember that formula saying, 00:02:47.76\00:02:50.67 "When Jesus finished all these sayings, 00:02:50.70\00:02:52.77 now Jesus goes to put it into the practice, 00:02:52.80\00:02:55.97 helping people in their needs." 00:02:56.00\00:02:58.74 So Chapters 8 and 9, 00:02:58.77\00:03:01.68 so we are dealing with that first major block of the book. 00:03:01.71\00:03:05.58 So five major sections. 00:03:05.61\00:03:08.35 These courses are teachings and the narratives. Yes. 00:03:08.38\00:03:10.89 And we're looking at the first major teaching section. 00:03:10.92\00:03:13.59 Major teaching of Jesus. 00:03:13.62\00:03:14.96 Actually, it's really describing 00:03:14.99\00:03:17.06 who and what the citizens of the kingdoms are. All right. 00:03:17.09\00:03:22.20 It would be good for us to read some of this, wouldn't it? 00:03:22.23\00:03:23.77 Oh, yes. 00:03:23.80\00:03:25.63 Glenn, before we go on. Okay. 00:03:25.67\00:03:28.67 In order to make the full meaning 00:03:28.70\00:03:30.67 of "The Sermon on the Mount" 00:03:30.71\00:03:32.04 we have something to mention, 00:03:32.07\00:03:34.18 that so many readers of the Gospels, 00:03:34.21\00:03:38.11 they do not realize 00:03:38.15\00:03:40.05 whenever we talk about Sermon on the Mount 00:03:40.08\00:03:41.62 is always Matthew Chapters 5 to 7, 00:03:41.65\00:03:44.65 but not too many readers of the Bible realize 00:03:44.69\00:03:46.89 that there is also another similar Sermon 00:03:46.92\00:03:50.53 that is actually found, let me go over there, 00:03:50.56\00:03:52.93 that is found in the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 6. 00:03:52.96\00:03:56.40 Okay. Verses 20 to 49. 00:03:56.43\00:04:00.80 Many liberal scholars, they say, you see, 00:04:02.94\00:04:06.98 we have two similar sermons but they're quite different. 00:04:07.01\00:04:12.71 Well, there's disagreements. 00:04:12.75\00:04:14.08 Jesus actually never preached one sermon. 00:04:14.12\00:04:16.18 Matthew collected some sayings of Jesus, 00:04:16.22\00:04:18.09 who collected some sayings of Jesus, 00:04:18.12\00:04:19.99 they made it sermons. 00:04:20.02\00:04:21.36 Actually I disagree with that. 00:04:21.39\00:04:23.63 I will suggest to you, you know, 00:04:23.66\00:04:26.13 Jesus was a preacher 00:04:26.16\00:04:27.76 and Glenn, you are a preacher, I'm a preacher, 00:04:27.83\00:04:30.13 I travel, we travel throughout the world. 00:04:30.17\00:04:33.27 I make one sermon and I don't preach 00:04:33.30\00:04:35.97 in new place always new sermon. 00:04:36.00\00:04:40.18 So many times I repeat my sermon 00:04:40.21\00:04:42.81 in several different, different places. 00:04:42.84\00:04:44.85 Because it applies. It applies. 00:04:44.88\00:04:46.48 However, I change a little bit of that. 00:04:46.51\00:04:49.22 I adjust that sermon to the needs of my audience. 00:04:49.25\00:04:53.92 You see if Jesus worked for three and a half years, 00:04:53.96\00:04:56.32 how much is that? It's approximately 1,260 days. 00:04:56.36\00:05:01.33 How many sermons did Jesus preach? 00:05:01.36\00:05:02.83 If He preached only twice a week. 00:05:02.86\00:05:04.63 Jesus preached several hundreds sermons. 00:05:04.67\00:05:07.44 Evidently Jesus didn't not every time preach a new sermon. 00:05:07.47\00:05:11.64 He would take the sermons He preached before or a speech 00:05:11.67\00:05:14.64 that He made before and He would repeat it 00:05:14.68\00:05:18.91 but apply it to the context of His audience. 00:05:18.95\00:05:22.58 So Matthew and Mark they contain two different sermons. 00:05:22.62\00:05:27.52 Similar content, how do we know that? 00:05:27.56\00:05:29.19 Matthew has three Chapters. 00:05:29.22\00:05:32.16 Luke has only 29 verses. 00:05:32.19\00:05:35.66 But there is something else, 00:05:35.70\00:05:37.03 if we go to Luke Chapter 6 verse 17, 00:05:37.07\00:05:40.20 it says that when Jesus delivered this speech, 00:05:40.24\00:05:42.87 He was in the plain. It was not on the mount. 00:05:42.90\00:05:46.44 On the level place. On the level place. 00:05:46.47\00:05:48.98 Okay. And, and, there is a difference between, 00:05:49.01\00:05:52.68 so you believe that Jesus preached 00:05:52.71\00:05:54.28 on two different occasions similar content, 00:05:54.32\00:05:56.55 but we should notice something, there is also basic difference, 00:05:56.58\00:05:59.89 the question is, why did Matthew choose this long sermon, 00:05:59.92\00:06:04.16 and Luke, the shorter sermon. 00:06:04.19\00:06:05.86 Glenn, you'll do it in Chapter 5 of Matthew, 00:06:05.89\00:06:09.26 I'll do Luke 6, just few things. 00:06:09.30\00:06:11.47 Can you read Chapter 5 verse 3 of Matthew? 00:06:11.50\00:06:15.40 Matthew Chapter 5, verse 3, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, 00:06:15.44\00:06:18.84 for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." 00:06:18.87\00:06:20.38 This is in Matthew, the same, the attitude, 00:06:20.41\00:06:23.51 let's see how it sounds in Luke Chapter 6, verse 20, 00:06:23.55\00:06:27.12 "Blessed are you who are poor for yours is the kingdom." 00:06:27.15\00:06:31.02 What is the basic difference? Something is missing. 00:06:31.05\00:06:34.09 It's here are those who are poor in spirit, 00:06:34.12\00:06:37.33 here those who are really poor. 00:06:37.36\00:06:39.33 Yeah. Just one more item. 00:06:39.36\00:06:42.73 Can you read verse 6 of Matthew Chapter 5? 00:06:42.76\00:06:45.73 Okay. "Blessed are those 00:06:45.77\00:06:47.10 who hunger and thirst for righteousness, 00:06:47.14\00:06:49.17 for they shall be filled." 00:06:49.20\00:06:50.54 What about verse 21 in Luke? 00:06:50.57\00:06:52.64 "Blessed are you who hunger now." 00:06:52.67\00:06:55.78 What is missing? Righteousness. 00:06:55.81\00:06:58.05 You see when Jesus preached to the gentiles, 00:06:58.08\00:07:01.12 according to the Gospel of Luke, 00:07:01.15\00:07:02.48 He cared about the physical needs. 00:07:02.52\00:07:04.99 When He preached to those Pharisees, 00:07:05.02\00:07:06.89 et cetera, and the Jews, 00:07:06.92\00:07:09.82 He cared about their spiritual needs. 00:07:09.86\00:07:11.93 That's why we need both the sermons. 00:07:11.96\00:07:14.00 We need both for balance, don't we? 00:07:14.00\00:07:15.93 I'll tell the viewers as we are going through 00:07:15.96\00:07:17.87 "The sermon on the Mount" you will say, boy, 00:07:17.90\00:07:19.73 my needs are not spiritual, I am faithful to God, 00:07:19.77\00:07:22.60 I love God so much, but nobody knows when they come home. 00:07:22.64\00:07:25.87 I don't have money to pay my electricity, 00:07:25.91\00:07:27.71 my power will be cut off, 00:07:27.74\00:07:29.08 or doctors told me a few days ago 00:07:29.11\00:07:32.28 that I have few more weeks to live, et cetera. 00:07:32.31\00:07:35.22 I need something, there is a Savior, 00:07:35.25\00:07:37.82 God meets with people where they are. 00:07:37.85\00:07:40.02 When people have needs, Jesus comes to them 00:07:40.06\00:07:44.03 and addresses their personal needs that they have. 00:07:44.06\00:07:47.66 All right. So Jesus preaches in Matthew 5. 00:07:47.66\00:07:52.60 Yes. A Sermon on the Mount. 00:07:52.63\00:07:54.20 Yes. What should we know about this? 00:07:54.24\00:07:56.74 Actually both in Luke and Matthew, both sermons, 00:07:56.77\00:08:01.31 they begin with special section, we call them the beatitudes. 00:08:01.34\00:08:05.71 Why the beatitudes, because there are eight sayings 00:08:05.75\00:08:11.62 and each sayings begins with one single word, 00:08:11.65\00:08:14.16 which is in our English translation blessed. 00:08:14.19\00:08:16.32 Glenn, would you read those beatitudes? 00:08:16.36\00:08:17.69 And by the way, 00:08:17.73\00:08:19.06 beatitudes is kind of a made up word, isn't it? 00:08:19.09\00:08:20.93 Actually we will come to that after reading-- 00:08:20.96\00:08:23.16 Sure, Matthew Chapter 5 verse 1. Actually 1 to 12. 00:08:23.20\00:08:27.60 "And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, 00:08:27.64\00:08:30.44 and when He had seated, His disciples came to Him. 00:08:30.47\00:08:34.01 Then He opened His mouth, and taught them saying, 00:08:34.04\00:08:36.85 Blessed are the poor in spirit, 00:08:36.88\00:08:39.11 for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 00:08:39.15\00:08:41.12 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 00:08:41.15\00:08:44.19 Blessed are the meek, 00:08:44.22\00:08:45.75 for they shall inherit the earth. 00:08:45.79\00:08:47.42 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, 00:08:47.46\00:08:51.36 for they shall be filled. 00:08:51.39\00:08:53.53 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. 00:08:53.56\00:08:56.70 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 00:08:56.73\00:09:00.47 Blessed are the peacemakers, 00:09:00.50\00:09:02.27 for they shall be called the sons of God. 00:09:02.30\00:09:04.91 Blessed are those who are persecuted 00:09:04.94\00:09:06.51 for righteousness' sake, 00:09:06.54\00:09:07.94 for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 00:09:07.98\00:09:10.35 Blessed are you when they revile you 00:09:11.35\00:09:14.38 and persecute you and say all kinds of evil 00:09:14.42\00:09:17.35 against you falsely from my sake. 00:09:17.39\00:09:19.92 Rejoice and be exceeding glad, 00:09:19.95\00:09:22.22 for your great is a reward in heaven, 00:09:22.26\00:09:23.76 for so they persecuted the prophets 00:09:23.79\00:09:25.99 who were before you." 00:09:26.03\00:09:27.56 Okay. So we see, we have eight sayings. 00:09:27.60\00:09:31.30 Each one begins with the word "Blessed" in English. 00:09:31.33\00:09:34.67 And I hope that the readers will understand 00:09:34.70\00:09:36.71 what I'm trying to say. 00:09:36.74\00:09:38.71 All those who are bilingual, they know that sometimes 00:09:38.74\00:09:42.01 when you try to translate something 00:09:42.04\00:09:43.45 from one language to another, then the words, that they fit. 00:09:43.48\00:09:48.35 So sometimes you have to use one sentence 00:09:48.38\00:09:50.02 in order to explain that word. 00:09:50.05\00:09:52.59 In Greek, the language in which the Gospel of Matthew 00:09:52.62\00:09:56.69 was written, actually contains the word makarios, 00:09:56.73\00:10:00.90 which is translated as the word "Blessed." 00:10:00.93\00:10:04.20 Another alternative word 00:10:04.23\00:10:05.57 for the word makarios is "Happy." 00:10:05.60\00:10:09.50 By the way, usually English speaking people-- 00:10:09.54\00:10:14.51 don't know that in English we have standard English word, 00:10:14.54\00:10:18.71 which is called makarism 00:10:18.75\00:10:20.15 that comes from the Greek word makarios. 00:10:20.18\00:10:22.58 Makarism simply means happiness. 00:10:22.62\00:10:25.42 But we really have to understand the word, 00:10:25.45\00:10:27.76 the root of these words. 00:10:27.79\00:10:30.59 Among ancient Greeks, the word makarios meant 00:10:30.63\00:10:35.73 that the person was spared 00:10:35.76\00:10:38.97 of all hardships of life and here is the point. 00:10:39.00\00:10:43.67 When a person have a happy family, 00:10:43.71\00:10:47.01 good bank account, I mean, money-- 00:10:47.04\00:10:48.98 was rich, when everything went good in his life, 00:10:49.01\00:10:53.72 ancient Greeks would say you see this person is makarios. 00:10:53.75\00:10:57.22 A good life. Good life, 00:10:57.25\00:11:00.26 this is among ancient Greeks. 00:11:00.29\00:11:03.76 What did we notice here in "The Sermon on the Mount?" 00:11:03.79\00:11:06.90 Who are those who are makarios? 00:11:06.93\00:11:10.50 You'll forgive me, I'm using the word makarios, 00:11:10.53\00:11:12.60 in order to get the full sense 00:11:12.63\00:11:15.27 of the meaning of this word. You are not spared. 00:11:15.30\00:11:18.24 Those who are hungry and thirsty in, 00:11:18.27\00:11:19.77 Luke, or righteousness, those who are poor, 00:11:19.81\00:11:23.01 those who are persecuted, those who are. 00:11:23.04\00:11:26.72 Glenn, now let me ask you one question. 00:11:26.75\00:11:28.08 I would like to ask the viewers, 00:11:28.12\00:11:29.52 just to start for a moment to think, 00:11:29.55\00:11:31.75 was Jesus unrealistic? 00:11:31.79\00:11:33.25 Glenn, would you be honest with me? 00:11:33.29\00:11:36.66 When you don't have money to pay your bills, 00:11:36.69\00:11:41.53 do you say, "I am blessed?" 00:11:41.56\00:11:44.40 We would call that kind of person out of touch. 00:11:44.43\00:11:47.60 Actually, they are attend-- Upside down. 00:11:47.64\00:11:49.20 I've never seen a student who does not have money 00:11:49.24\00:11:52.27 to pay his tuition and he must leave. 00:11:52.31\00:11:55.14 I don't think, we rejoice in our poverty very much. 00:11:55.18\00:11:57.81 And he say--but you see the Christians 00:11:57.85\00:11:59.85 are so many times unrealistic, you know, 00:11:59.88\00:12:02.28 you know, I am blessed because I'm poor. 00:12:02.32\00:12:05.55 Did you hear anybody to say, you know, 00:12:05.59\00:12:07.22 doctor told me I have few more weeks to live, 00:12:07.26\00:12:09.76 I'm so much blessed. So what is that, 00:12:09.79\00:12:13.23 that Jesus tried to say here with His beatitudes. 00:12:13.26\00:12:17.17 Did Jesus try to be unrealistic to say, 00:12:17.20\00:12:20.47 those people who are hungry, 00:12:20.50\00:12:22.80 who are thirsty, people who are poor, 00:12:22.84\00:12:25.84 people who suffer hardships in this life, 00:12:25.87\00:12:27.84 they are blessed. This is not what Jesus tried to say. 00:12:27.88\00:12:30.98 Actually if you really want to translate 00:12:31.01\00:12:33.15 these beatitudes from original Greek, 00:12:33.18\00:12:36.48 it should be "You are blessed or you are happy, 00:12:36.52\00:12:40.82 despite the fact that you are poor, 00:12:40.86\00:12:45.83 that you are hungry, that you are persecute," 00:12:45.86\00:12:48.36 that's the difference. You are not blessed 00:12:48.40\00:12:50.93 because you are poor, you are blessed 00:12:50.97\00:12:54.10 despite the fact that you are poor, 00:12:54.14\00:12:55.60 that you are hungry, that you, that you face 00:12:55.64\00:12:58.37 the difficulties of this life and it makes difference. 00:12:58.41\00:13:01.11 So you have a joy despite what happens to you? 00:13:01.14\00:13:03.98 Yes. So what is the point that Jesus tried to make? 00:13:04.01\00:13:07.78 When we accept Jesus as our personal savior, 00:13:07.82\00:13:12.05 when we are accepted by God, 00:13:12.09\00:13:14.99 when we become God's children, 00:13:15.02\00:13:17.53 God never promised to us 00:13:17.56\00:13:20.56 that we will be spared of hardships of life. 00:13:20.60\00:13:23.80 God never told us that he will take us 00:13:23.83\00:13:26.20 out of the difficulties of life, 00:13:26.23\00:13:29.60 what God promised to us is, Jesus said, 00:13:29.64\00:13:32.87 in the world you will have tribulation, 00:13:32.91\00:13:35.31 is that what Jesus said? That's right. 00:13:35.34\00:13:36.81 What God promised to us when we have to go 00:13:36.85\00:13:39.95 through the difficulties and hardships of life, 00:13:39.98\00:13:44.62 God will be with us, not that He will take us 00:13:44.65\00:13:47.62 out of that, He will be working with us 00:13:47.66\00:13:50.56 through the difficulties of life. 00:13:50.59\00:13:51.93 As the Psalm said, "Even if I had to work 00:13:51.96\00:13:54.93 through the valley of the shadow of death, 00:13:54.96\00:13:57.37 You will be with me." 00:13:57.40\00:13:59.63 Knowing that God is with me, 00:13:59.67\00:14:03.17 will make me blessed, give me the assurance 00:14:03.20\00:14:06.61 that I'm not forgotten, that I'm not forsaken by God, 00:14:06.64\00:14:10.58 that God is with me. 00:14:10.61\00:14:12.91 The external circumstances 00:14:12.95\00:14:14.75 will not define my relationship with God, 00:14:14.78\00:14:17.32 my relationship with God 00:14:17.35\00:14:18.99 will define the circumstances in which we are. 00:14:19.02\00:14:22.29 Ranko, you've raised some questions in my mind. Yes. 00:14:22.32\00:14:24.73 We've got to come back to right after our break. 00:14:24.76\00:14:27.10 We'll be right back. 00:14:27.13\00:14:28.43
