We're back in the Gospel of Mathew, 00:00:01.33\00:00:02.73 exploring Chapter 4, seeking to understand, 00:00:02.76\00:00:06.30 more of the insights that we can gain 00:00:06.33\00:00:07.97 from the temptations of Jesus. 00:00:08.00\00:00:10.57 Ranko, as we look at these temptations, 00:00:10.61\00:00:12.74 we see some things about the work of the devil. 00:00:12.77\00:00:15.28 He quotes scripture, so we can't just assume 00:00:15.31\00:00:18.01 that anyone who refers the Bible 00:00:18.05\00:00:20.05 is necessarily following God's will. 00:00:20.08\00:00:22.78 And he misquotes it and he seems to get out issues. 00:00:22.82\00:00:26.25 Now, how can he say here, 00:00:26.29\00:00:28.49 you know, in the third temptation, 00:00:28.52\00:00:30.69 you know, I'll give you all these kingdoms of the world. 00:00:30.73\00:00:33.70 Where they his? They were. 00:00:33.73\00:00:35.90 Can I just before we deal with that to finish 00:00:35.93\00:00:38.13 the subject that--that we as is though. 00:00:38.17\00:00:41.17 We're dealing with, first, three temptations of Jesus. 00:00:41.20\00:00:44.97 If Jesus failed at this point, 00:00:45.01\00:00:48.81 we would not have the cross. 00:00:48.84\00:00:51.15 We would not have the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:00:51.18\00:00:53.45 We would not have the four Gospels. 00:00:53.48\00:00:56.02 So this was the most decisive battle. 00:00:56.05\00:00:58.49 And I want to assure the readers, 00:00:58.52\00:01:01.06 what we have here, is the reversal 00:01:01.09\00:01:03.53 of the appearance of sin at the beginning of Genesis, 00:01:03.56\00:01:06.76 where Adam failed Paul said. In those three areas. 00:01:06.80\00:01:10.07 Because Jesus won the victory, 00:01:10.10\00:01:11.87 so can you remind us one more time, 00:01:11.90\00:01:14.04 the three aspects of the temptation? 00:01:14.07\00:01:15.44 The lust of the eyes. 00:01:15.47\00:01:18.24 The lust of the flesh and the pride of life. 00:01:18.27\00:01:21.71 This is exactly how the sin came into this world. 00:01:21.74\00:01:25.08 Glenn, can you open Genesis 3:6? Genesis Chapter 3. 00:01:25.11\00:01:30.92 We can't understand what is going on. 00:01:30.95\00:01:32.79 Otherwise those temptations, they you know, 00:01:32.82\00:01:34.72 do not have too much significance. 00:01:34.76\00:01:36.99 So you're suggesting that 00:01:37.03\00:01:38.39 Jesus succeeds where others have failed. 00:01:38.43\00:01:40.26 Yeah. Jesus, actually, we have a reversal here, 00:01:40.30\00:01:43.70 of the coming of sin into this world. 00:01:43.73\00:01:45.37 With the human beings where Adam, actually failed, 00:01:45.40\00:01:48.87 Jesus won the victory 00:01:48.90\00:01:50.27 in order to save His people from their sins. 00:01:50.31\00:01:51.71 And you know, we better say hallelujah. Oh, yes. 00:01:51.74\00:01:53.94 You know, without this, this is our hope. 00:01:53.98\00:01:55.78 Can you read 3:6, Genesis? 00:01:55.81\00:01:57.28 Genesis 3:6. All right. 00:01:57.31\00:01:59.95 So when the woman saw that, the tree was good. 00:02:00.05\00:02:02.85 She saw that the tree was good. 00:02:02.88\00:02:04.25 She saw. That was pleasing to the eyes. 00:02:04.29\00:02:07.36 So the first was good for food, to eat. 00:02:07.39\00:02:10.53 What is that, the lust of the flesh? The next one. 00:02:10.56\00:02:13.29 It was pleasing with the eyes, 00:02:13.33\00:02:14.63 and a tree desirable to make one wise. 00:02:14.66\00:02:16.77 The pride of life and pleasing to the eyes, 00:02:16.80\00:02:19.10 it's the lust of eyes. 00:02:19.13\00:02:21.20 And she took of its fruit and ate it. 00:02:21.24\00:02:23.44 How did the first sin come? 00:02:23.47\00:02:25.81 Through the lust of eyes, 00:02:25.84\00:02:27.51 the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. 00:02:27.54\00:02:31.08 So, now Jesus comes, 00:02:31.11\00:02:33.18 this is His first step to save His people from their sins. 00:02:33.21\00:02:37.39 It is exactly where the first human couple failed, 00:02:37.42\00:02:42.49 opening, okay, the door for sin 00:02:42.52\00:02:46.19 and temptation in this world. 00:02:46.23\00:02:47.83 Jesus had to win the victory. 00:02:47.86\00:02:49.83 So we have first temptation that you mentioned. 00:02:49.86\00:02:52.30 If you're Son of God, 00:02:52.33\00:02:54.54 say to these stones to become bread. 00:02:54.57\00:02:56.37 What is this? 00:02:56.40\00:02:58.01 It's the lust of the flesh, okay. 00:02:58.04\00:03:02.04 Then after that Jesus put, sorry, 00:03:02.08\00:03:05.15 the devil put Jesus on the top of the mountain. 00:03:05.18\00:03:07.98 And he shows him all the kingdom of this world. 00:03:08.02\00:03:10.59 I will give it to you all these things, 00:03:10.62\00:03:13.46 okay, whatever you see. 00:03:13.49\00:03:15.52 Actually, these words are really the lust of the eyes. 00:03:15.56\00:03:18.39 And after that he said to Jesus, 00:03:18.43\00:03:20.73 and he put him there on the pinnacle of the temple. 00:03:20.76\00:03:23.63 Jump down, throw yourself, 00:03:23.67\00:03:25.83 when you jump down from the temple, 00:03:25.87\00:03:27.54 people will applaud to you 00:03:27.57\00:03:29.04 and tell you 'Jesus the Messiah'. 00:03:29.07\00:03:31.24 This is 'Superman,' this is 'Hero'. 00:03:31.27\00:03:33.38 You know, this is the Son of Man from the Book of Daniel. 00:03:33.41\00:03:36.81 You know, coming with the clouds, 00:03:36.85\00:03:38.21 nothing can happen to him. 00:03:38.25\00:03:39.61 Actually, this was the pride of life. 00:03:39.65\00:03:41.92 This was actually, the three aspects of the temptations 00:03:41.95\00:03:45.79 that Jesus had to go through in order to save 00:03:45.82\00:03:48.39 His people from their sins. 00:03:48.42\00:03:50.16 And not only the first couple have failed, 00:03:50.19\00:03:52.13 but we have all failed. Yes. 00:03:52.16\00:03:53.83 What does this portrait of the temptations of Jesus 00:03:53.86\00:03:56.70 tell you about Jesus as our sin-bearer as the sinless one? 00:03:56.73\00:04:01.80 What picture should we be sure that we have of Him? 00:04:01.84\00:04:03.97 Actually that's what the Bible says, 00:04:04.01\00:04:06.24 that Jesus took all our sins upon Himself. 00:04:06.27\00:04:10.15 You see, we are tempted, 00:04:10.18\00:04:11.51 and I would like to tell the viewers 00:04:11.55\00:04:13.85 and I am not saying to you, 00:04:13.88\00:04:15.35 but I'm saying also about myself. We're all sinners. 00:04:15.38\00:04:18.89 We all have different temptations in our life, 00:04:18.92\00:04:21.16 and believe me so many times, 00:04:21.19\00:04:22.99 I'm asking God always for guidance. 00:04:23.02\00:04:24.96 There's so many times, I feel sorry, 00:04:24.99\00:04:26.59 because I did not succeed, etc. 00:04:26.63\00:04:29.03 But Matthew Chapter 4, give me 00:04:29.06\00:04:31.27 that strong assurance that my Savior. Yes. 00:04:31.30\00:04:35.97 Overcame those temptations. 00:04:36.00\00:04:38.31 He told me, that the victory 00:04:38.34\00:04:40.51 over sin is possible, that's number one. 00:04:40.54\00:04:44.21 And number two, he showed me 00:04:44.25\00:04:46.61 how the victory is possible. How? 00:04:46.65\00:04:50.05 Relying not on my method, on my own way, 00:04:50.09\00:04:54.96 the way how I think that I should succeed in life. 00:04:54.99\00:04:57.86 It's only relying and trusting God. 00:04:57.89\00:05:00.40 Putting my trust in God. 00:05:00.43\00:05:02.16 Never should be an excuse for us to just live in sin. 00:05:02.20\00:05:06.80 And yet there is a tremendous joy, 00:05:06.84\00:05:09.60 tremendous reassurance, to know 00:05:09.64\00:05:11.77 that Jesus has succeeded in every place. 00:05:11.81\00:05:14.61 Actually, I reminded, I think I heard 00:05:14.64\00:05:16.88 that Martin Luther said it, he said, 00:05:16.91\00:05:19.41 when I look at myself, I cannot believe that 00:05:19.45\00:05:23.18 I can be saved and be victor or save. 00:05:23.22\00:05:28.22 But when I look in Jesus, 00:05:28.26\00:05:29.79 I cannot imagine that I'm not saved. Yeah. 00:05:29.82\00:05:33.70 This is the beauty, the beauty of Jesus. 00:05:33.73\00:05:35.13 How can we be lost if we have a Savior like this, 00:05:35.16\00:05:37.30 unless we choose to just ignore Him. 00:05:37.33\00:05:39.10 What a wonderful Savior? 00:05:39.13\00:05:40.70 We wanna go a little bit further in Matthew Chapter 4. 00:05:40.74\00:05:44.77 It says that He went out from there, 00:05:44.81\00:05:47.78 what takes place next? 00:05:47.81\00:05:50.21 Actually, now Jesus begins His public ministry. 00:05:50.25\00:05:53.21 You see his Sonship was pronounced at the baptism. 00:05:53.25\00:05:57.55 His Sonship was tested. 00:05:57.59\00:06:00.36 Now, He has proven what kind of Messiah He would be? 00:06:00.39\00:06:04.63 But the way, do you notice here something. 00:06:04.66\00:06:07.50 What was the purpose of this temptation 00:06:07.56\00:06:09.33 that Satan was doing, 00:06:09.36\00:06:10.73 trying to prevent Jesus to go to the cross? 00:06:10.77\00:06:16.04 You don't need to go to the cross. Sure. 00:06:16.07\00:06:19.37 Do this following things. Take the easy way. 00:06:19.41\00:06:21.74 And I will give all this to you and ever. 00:06:21.78\00:06:24.48 By the way, from this moment on, 00:06:24.51\00:06:27.15 up to the end of Jesus ministry, 00:06:27.18\00:06:29.45 Satan is doing everything to prevent Jesus to the cross. 00:06:29.48\00:06:33.12 Do you remember? 00:06:33.15\00:06:34.52 In Mathew, you will come to that Matthew Chapter 16, 00:06:34.56\00:06:36.86 He even use His beloved disciple by name of Peter 00:06:36.89\00:06:40.93 to prevent Him to go the cross. 00:06:40.96\00:06:42.86 And Jesus had to call Peter, 00:06:42.90\00:06:44.57 go behind me Satan because Jesus saw Peter, 00:06:44.60\00:06:48.04 being used by Satan to prevent Jesus to go to the cross. 00:06:48.07\00:06:51.67 When even Jesus finally was on the cross, 00:06:51.71\00:06:55.71 Satan tried to pull Him down 00:06:55.74\00:06:57.11 from the cross. Come down, come down. 00:06:57.15\00:06:58.51 People were shouting come down and we'll believe in You. 00:06:58.55\00:07:02.65 That was a constant, constant effort, 00:07:02.68\00:07:05.52 effort to prevent Jesus to go to the cross. 00:07:05.55\00:07:08.22 Once, Jesus won the victory over that first temptation, 00:07:08.26\00:07:12.69 where the human beings failed at the beginning. 00:07:12.73\00:07:15.56 Now, Jesus is ready to go 00:07:15.60\00:07:17.77 and to start His public ministry. 00:07:17.80\00:07:19.50 So we see a victorious, triumphant Savior coming forth. 00:07:19.53\00:07:22.74 It says that, let me just read Chapter 4:12. 00:07:22.77\00:07:26.24 "Now when Jesus heard that John was put in prison, 00:07:26.27\00:07:28.61 he departed to Galilee and so forth." 00:07:28.64\00:07:31.01 What's the significance of that He went to Galilee? 00:07:31.05\00:07:33.25 Is this just about geography? 00:07:33.28\00:07:34.65 Please, you can read up to verse 17. 00:07:34.68\00:07:37.15 Okay. Please. 00:07:37.19\00:07:38.55 "And leaving Nazareth, he came to dwell in Capernaum 00:07:38.59\00:07:42.32 which is by the sea, 00:07:42.36\00:07:43.73 in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali 00:07:43.76\00:07:45.93 that it might be fulfilled what was spoken, 00:07:45.96\00:07:47.66 by the prophet Isaiah." 00:07:47.73\00:07:49.40 Saying verse 15, "The land of Zebulun 00:07:49.43\00:07:52.20 and the land of Naphtali by the way of the sea, 00:07:52.23\00:07:55.40 beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 00:07:55.44\00:07:58.81 The people, who sat in darkness, 00:07:58.84\00:08:00.68 have seen a great light, 00:08:00.71\00:08:02.31 and upon those who sat on the region, 00:08:02.34\00:08:03.88 and shadow of death light has dawned. 00:08:03.91\00:08:06.95 From that time Jesus, began to preach and to say, 00:08:06.98\00:08:09.75 repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 00:08:09.78\00:08:12.32 Actually, Glenn, are we aware, that from this moment, 00:08:12.35\00:08:17.43 when Jesus made the first step in His ministry, 00:08:17.46\00:08:19.79 trying to preach the Gospel. 00:08:19.83\00:08:21.96 Or, up to the time, 00:08:22.00\00:08:23.37 just few weeks before His crucifixion. 00:08:23.40\00:08:26.94 All the time, almost three-and half years, 00:08:26.97\00:08:30.41 Jesus ministry was confined to Galilee, 00:08:30.44\00:08:33.54 except when Jesus made short trips to Jerusalem, 00:08:33.58\00:08:37.75 or to other territories. 00:08:37.78\00:08:39.41 It was just very short trips. 00:08:39.45\00:08:41.05 Actually, Jesus mission was completely there-- 00:08:41.08\00:08:43.59 there in Galilee. 00:08:43.62\00:08:45.29 But we have then to understand-- What's Galilee? 00:08:45.32\00:08:49.29 About Galilee. Actually, let me just illustrate little bit. 00:08:49.32\00:08:53.19 You know, Galilee had the north and had a south. 00:08:53.23\00:08:57.73 South was Judaea; north was 00:08:57.77\00:09:00.14 the territory of two tribes, Zebulun and Naphtali. 00:09:00.17\00:09:03.91 We're talking about territory around the Sea of Galilee; 00:09:03.94\00:09:08.04 down was Dead Sea and Judaea, etc. 00:09:08.08\00:09:11.78 If you go there down to Judaea, 00:09:11.81\00:09:14.98 you know, rocky area, Judean desert. 00:09:15.02\00:09:17.99 If you go to the north, around Sea of Galilee, 00:09:18.02\00:09:20.06 it's a fertile ground. 00:09:20.09\00:09:23.29 Farmers, actually all these oranges, etc, 00:09:23.32\00:09:26.59 you know, that were coming from Israel, 00:09:26.63\00:09:28.53 would come from that part of the world. 00:09:28.56\00:09:30.83 But the problem was, that people who lived in Galilee, 00:09:30.87\00:09:34.37 they were not really Jews. 00:09:34.40\00:09:35.87 They were not descendants of Abraham. 00:09:35.90\00:09:38.21 You know, with those 10 tribes-- Yes. 00:09:38.24\00:09:40.68 were deported from Palestine, the king of Assyria hided it. 00:09:40.71\00:09:45.08 After that, the king of Assyria 00:09:45.11\00:09:46.48 brought these pagan people, nations, 00:09:46.51\00:09:49.75 and he settled them there into the territory. 00:09:49.78\00:09:52.55 Okay, so people, who lived in the territory 00:09:52.59\00:09:54.82 were not really the descendants of Abraham. 00:09:54.86\00:09:57.43 It was few decades, before Jesus is, 00:09:57.46\00:10:00.33 that Alexander by name, one of the Jewish kings, 00:10:00.36\00:10:06.47 he forcibly circumcised those people around Shechem, 00:10:06.50\00:10:10.34 so make them to be-- to be Jewish. 00:10:10.37\00:10:13.27 But the problem with these people, 00:10:13.31\00:10:14.68 they were not, never accepted 00:10:14.71\00:10:16.08 by the Pharisees to be Jews. Sure. 00:10:16.11\00:10:18.05 They were outcast, they were rejected. 00:10:18.08\00:10:21.42 Another thing is, they were there in the north. 00:10:21.45\00:10:24.59 Whenever, the enemies of Israel would come to invade Palestine, 00:10:24.62\00:10:28.99 who was the first target? Galileans, okay. 00:10:29.02\00:10:33.40 They were the first target. 00:10:33.43\00:10:34.83 When the enemies were cut, leaving Palestine. 00:10:34.86\00:10:37.60 Who was the last group that actually, 00:10:37.63\00:10:40.70 they express their anger against? 00:10:40.74\00:10:42.60 They were Galileans. 00:10:42.64\00:10:44.17 But something else? 00:10:44.21\00:10:46.31 Since, it was a fertile ground. 00:10:46.34\00:10:48.18 They took about farmers. 00:10:48.21\00:10:50.18 Romans imposed heavy taxes on those people. 00:10:50.21\00:10:54.42 So Romans would take taxes. 00:10:54.45\00:10:57.12 Herod, who made all those building projects, 00:10:57.15\00:11:01.09 another taxes and then tax collectors 00:11:01.12\00:11:03.46 who were collecting those taxes, 00:11:03.49\00:11:06.93 were stealing money from those people for themselves. 00:11:06.96\00:11:08.90 Can you imagine that? 00:11:08.93\00:11:10.30 Those people suffered, so much in that--that area. 00:11:10.33\00:11:17.14 And Jesus came to those people to preach the Gospel. 00:11:17.17\00:11:21.98 So in the text of Isaiah, we read that actually people 00:11:22.01\00:11:26.58 who were sitting in darkness, they saw great light, 00:11:26.61\00:11:29.78 that light came to him and they responded to light. 00:11:29.82\00:11:32.82 Jesus was rejected in Jerusalem, 00:11:32.85\00:11:34.99 but if people embrace to Jesus, they founded Him. 00:11:35.02\00:11:38.23 They recognized him, the great Savior who came, 00:11:38.26\00:11:41.23 when the light shown, people responded to that light. 00:11:41.26\00:11:44.80 Ranko, you're suggesting that God 00:11:44.83\00:11:47.30 came to those who rejected. Those who are outcast. 00:11:47.34\00:11:50.57 He's still doing the same thing today, isn't He? 00:11:50.61\00:11:52.54 You see, Jesus does not have elite, 00:11:52.57\00:11:55.94 a special people that He favors. 00:11:55.98\00:11:58.35 All those people who need the Savior, 00:11:58.38\00:12:01.98 who need Jesus Christ, Jesus come to them. 00:12:02.02\00:12:05.62 And that's why, the beginning of Jesus ministry 00:12:05.65\00:12:08.92 and almost the conclusion of His ministry 00:12:08.96\00:12:11.39 actually happened there, there in Galilee. 00:12:11.43\00:12:14.30 What a Savior? What a Savior? 00:12:14.36\00:12:17.40 He comes to those who need him most. Yes. 00:12:17.43\00:12:21.04 Ranko, as we wrap this up, 00:12:21.07\00:12:23.87 it's the repentance, is the kingdom of heaven. 00:12:23.91\00:12:26.24 How do you see Jesus in these two scenes here? 00:12:26.27\00:12:29.04 Yes. I would like to make the final word to the viewers. 00:12:29.08\00:12:32.05 May be you say, you recognize yourself and say, 00:12:32.08\00:12:34.75 I am the one sitting in darkness, 00:12:34.78\00:12:36.75 on the valley and the shadow of death. 00:12:36.79\00:12:39.02 I feel like Galileans. 00:12:39.05\00:12:41.19 Praise God, that's why we need the Savior 00:12:41.22\00:12:43.89 and the Savior came to save just as one, of you and me. 00:12:43.93\00:12:48.23
