That's right, right. 00:01:24.21\00:01:26.25 And you've traveled in various parts of the world, 00:01:26.28\00:01:28.18 the people are watching, people are listening, 00:01:28.22\00:01:30.09 it's touching lives, and we know 00:01:30.12\00:01:32.69 God's been blessing, so that's tremendous. 00:01:32.72\00:01:35.22 Now, Ranko Stefanovic, 00:01:35.26\00:01:36.62 we're studying the book of Matthew. 00:01:36.66\00:01:38.16 We've gone through the first few chapters 00:01:38.19\00:01:39.89 and this time tell us 00:01:39.93\00:01:41.40 what we're gonna be exploring this time. 00:01:41.43\00:01:42.93 Actually we concluded the section 00:01:42.96\00:01:45.67 on the baptism of Jesus 00:01:45.70\00:01:47.37 with the proclamation that the Father made. 00:01:47.40\00:01:50.34 This is my beloved Son, 00:01:50.37\00:01:54.74 and then after that the Holy Spirit comes 00:01:54.78\00:01:58.11 as a dove up on Jesus equipping, 00:01:58.15\00:02:01.22 enabling Jesus now to start public ministry. 00:02:01.25\00:02:04.25 Actually these two things this is my beloved Son. Yes. 00:02:04.29\00:02:07.82 And the coming of the Holy Spirit is 00:02:07.86\00:02:09.56 exactly the beginning of chapter four. Okay. 00:02:09.59\00:02:13.13 We have the Holy Spirit takes Jesus to the wilderness 00:02:13.16\00:02:17.80 and Sonship of Jesus is now tested today. 00:02:17.83\00:02:20.07 Okay, and before we go there 00:02:20.10\00:02:21.47 we want that same spirit to help us. 00:02:21.50\00:02:22.87 Let's pray together that God will guide us. 00:02:22.90\00:02:25.34 Lord, as we get into Your word once again, 00:02:25.37\00:02:28.58 please come into our hearts and to our minds, 00:02:28.61\00:02:31.11 speak to us through Your word. 00:02:31.15\00:02:33.62 We believe that the Bible is an inspired book 00:02:33.65\00:02:37.92 and that this, these writings, these precious gifts to us 00:02:37.95\00:02:42.79 are a way for us to hear Your voice. 00:02:42.82\00:02:45.16 So we need You to speak, in Jesus name we pray. Amen. 00:02:45.19\00:02:49.93 So a high point and the experience 00:02:49.96\00:02:53.87 the baptism of Jesus, you would expect to be 00:02:53.90\00:02:57.31 a soaring success from then on. 00:02:57.34\00:02:59.81 But chapter four takes us 00:02:59.84\00:03:01.24 a little different direction, doesn't it? 00:03:01.28\00:03:03.01 You know, so many times I meet very good Christians 00:03:03.04\00:03:08.08 and they come to me they said, I'd like to be rebaptized. 00:03:08.12\00:03:10.89 They said, you know, I was baptized 00:03:10.92\00:03:13.49 and I had many problems in my spiritual life. 00:03:13.52\00:03:17.03 Would you now, I would like to be rebaptized. 00:03:17.06\00:03:19.03 I said, why? 00:03:19.06\00:03:21.33 Because they hope when they are baptized 00:03:21.36\00:03:24.23 all the spiritual problems will disappear from their lives. 00:03:24.27\00:03:28.00 Actually I've to persuade them 00:03:28.04\00:03:29.44 that baptism will not prevent the devil to tempt them 00:03:29.47\00:03:36.18 and to create problems in their lives. 00:03:36.21\00:03:38.21 Actually when you are baptized -when you're baptized, 00:03:38.25\00:03:41.12 it's a good avenue of temptations 00:03:41.15\00:03:43.08 for Satan to come to you. 00:03:43.12\00:03:44.49 This is exactly what happened in Jesus life. 00:03:44.52\00:03:46.99 Let's read a little bit of chapter four. 00:03:47.02\00:03:48.89 Can you read the first 11 actually verses? 00:03:48.92\00:03:50.86 All right. Matthew 4:1. 00:03:50.89\00:03:55.46 "Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit 00:03:55.50\00:03:57.07 into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 00:03:57.10\00:03:59.90 When he had fasted forty days and forty nights, 00:03:59.93\00:04:02.57 afterwards he was hungry. 00:04:02.60\00:04:05.07 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, 00:04:05.11\00:04:08.31 "If you are the Son of God, 00:04:08.34\00:04:10.35 command that these stones become bread." 00:04:10.38\00:04:13.11 But He answered and said, 00:04:13.15\00:04:14.98 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:04:15.02\00:04:18.62 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. 00:04:18.65\00:04:22.36 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, 00:04:22.39\00:04:25.36 set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 00:04:25.39\00:04:26.83 and said to Him, 00:04:26.86\00:04:28.20 "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. 00:04:28.23\00:04:30.33 For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you, 00:04:30.37\00:04:33.20 and in their hands they shall bear you up, 00:04:33.23\00:04:35.47 Lest you dash your foot against a stone.'" 00:04:35.50\00:04:38.41 Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 00:04:38.44\00:04:40.24 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God. 00:04:40.28\00:04:41.88 And again, the devil took Him up 00:04:41.91\00:04:43.48 on an exceedingly high mountain, 00:04:43.51\00:04:45.65 and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 00:04:45.68\00:04:48.18 And he said to Him, 00:04:48.22\00:04:49.68 "All these things I will give You 00:04:49.72\00:04:52.02 if You will fall down and worship me." 00:04:52.05\00:04:54.12 Then Jesus said to him, 00:04:54.16\00:04:55.52 "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 00:04:55.56\00:04:58.19 'You shall worship the Lord your God, 00:04:58.23\00:05:00.30 and Him only shall you serve. 00:05:00.33\00:05:02.36 Then the devil left Him, and behold, 00:05:02.40\00:05:04.27 angels came and ministered to Him." What a scene. Yeah. 00:05:04.30\00:05:09.00 Right, this is a scene hidden from human experience. 00:05:09.04\00:05:13.17 Matthew only knows about this 00:05:13.21\00:05:14.54 through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. 00:05:14.58\00:05:16.38 No one else is there, Jesus is alone He's in the wilderness, 00:05:16.41\00:05:20.75 the Holy Spirit is with Him. 00:05:20.78\00:05:22.15 And if we're gonna face temptation 00:05:22.18\00:05:23.55 we better be led by the spirit. 00:05:23.59\00:05:25.15 Glenn, do you remember when we mention in the beginning 00:05:25.19\00:05:27.89 about the purpose of the gospel of Matthew. 00:05:27.92\00:05:29.92 He came to save His people from their sins. 00:05:29.96\00:05:32.99 How to save them from their sins 00:05:33.03\00:05:34.76 to go through the experience of His people 00:05:34.83\00:05:37.10 in order to save them. 00:05:37.13\00:05:38.70 So let's go, just in few moments to the Old Testament 00:05:38.73\00:05:41.97 about experience of God's peoples. 00:05:42.00\00:05:45.31 They went there to Egypt. All right. 00:05:45.34\00:05:47.81 Then from Egypt they had to go through water, 00:05:47.84\00:05:51.38 to go to the wilderness how long were they in wilderness? 00:05:51.41\00:05:53.88 Forty years and then there in the wilderness 00:05:53.92\00:05:57.52 they tempted God constantly. 00:05:57.55\00:06:01.82 There after the wilderness 00:06:01.86\00:06:03.96 they went there to the mount there, 00:06:03.99\00:06:05.53 there were given the Ten Commandments. 00:06:05.56\00:06:07.40 Do you notice something? 00:06:07.46\00:06:08.76 This is exactly how the Holy Spirit 00:06:08.80\00:06:12.17 through Matthew organized the life of Jesus is. 00:06:12.20\00:06:15.40 So you're showing parallels. 00:06:15.44\00:06:16.81 Jesus came out of Egypt, you remember that? 00:06:16.84\00:06:20.11 Then the next episode is, He goes to the water. 00:06:20.14\00:06:25.05 There is announcement, this is my son by the way 00:06:25.08\00:06:28.38 the same what God said to Moses. Yes. 00:06:28.42\00:06:30.89 Coming--bring my son out of Egypt, 00:06:30.92\00:06:34.56 okay, Then Jesus went to the wilderness there 00:06:34.59\00:06:37.46 and it is we will see in the next presentation 00:06:37.49\00:06:40.40 He delivers explains the law of God there 00:06:40.43\00:06:42.73 from the mount there, sermon on the mount. 00:06:42.76\00:06:46.37 Actually Jesus how He has presented is really going 00:06:46.40\00:06:49.20 through experience of His people in order to save them. 00:06:49.24\00:06:51.87 And what understatement of scripture. Yes. 00:06:51.91\00:06:55.31 You know, He fasted forty days and He's hungry. 00:06:55.34\00:06:58.75 I'm sure He was much more than hungry. Okay. 00:06:58.78\00:07:01.55 And the devil comes to Him. 00:07:01.58\00:07:03.65 Now what do we learn about the devil in this passage? 00:07:03.69\00:07:06.52 What do we learn? 00:07:06.55\00:07:07.92 We see something about Jesus, 00:07:07.96\00:07:09.32 but we also learn something about the devil. 00:07:09.36\00:07:10.93 You know today we live in the world when Christians 00:07:10.96\00:07:14.50 out there becoming skeptic about Satan, 00:07:14.56\00:07:17.73 so we don't use the word Satan any longer. 00:07:17.77\00:07:20.24 We don't use the word demons any longer. 00:07:20.27\00:07:22.80 We are talking about physiological issues 00:07:22.84\00:07:25.17 that people have emotionally 00:07:25.21\00:07:27.14 you know, some chemicals within our body 00:07:27.18\00:07:29.14 that make us to be like this or this. 00:07:29.18\00:07:32.35 But when we read the Bible, Satan is a real person. 00:07:32.38\00:07:36.35 He is the enemy of God and he is the enemy of God's people. 00:07:36.38\00:07:40.66 By the way he was the one who wanted to defeat Jesus 00:07:40.69\00:07:44.36 at the beginning of his ministry. 00:07:44.39\00:07:46.49 So Jesus is baptized that glorious event, 00:07:46.53\00:07:50.07 the Father speaks from heaven. 00:07:50.10\00:07:51.80 Now He is at the other extreme, famished and hungry 00:07:51.83\00:07:55.90 and the devil comes to attack Him 00:07:55.94\00:07:57.31 when He is most vulnerable. 00:07:57.34\00:07:58.71 Actually in the book 'Desire of Ages' 00:07:58.74\00:08:01.78 the book that you referred already page 114, 00:08:01.81\00:08:05.45 there is something very interesting if you read 00:08:05.48\00:08:07.25 the Jesus went to the wilderness to be alone. 00:08:07.28\00:08:10.65 He wanted now--you know when we see 00:08:10.69\00:08:13.09 about any great man in the Bible 00:08:13.12\00:08:15.86 before they went to that ministry 00:08:15.89\00:08:17.56 that God appointed them to do. 00:08:17.59\00:08:19.29 First they would go to some place 00:08:19.33\00:08:20.93 to prepare themselves with God, 00:08:20.96\00:08:22.93 that's what Jesus did He went there to the wilderness. 00:08:22.96\00:08:25.77 So Jesus went there to contemplate His mission 00:08:25.80\00:08:28.34 and work by fasting and prayer, 00:08:28.37\00:08:31.27 He was to brace Himself for the blood stained path, 00:08:31.31\00:08:34.68 He must travel. 00:08:34.71\00:08:36.08 But now the sentence is, but Satan knew, 00:08:36.11\00:08:39.45 that the Savior had gone into the wilderness 00:08:39.48\00:08:42.35 and he thought this to be best time to approach Him. 00:08:42.38\00:08:45.49 When did He approach Him? 00:08:45.52\00:08:47.69 When Jesus was very hungry after 40 days 00:08:47.72\00:08:50.93 He had to be very hungry. 00:08:50.96\00:08:52.76 And you know, Ranko, sometimes in my ministry 00:08:52.79\00:08:54.73 I'm sure you've run in the same question 00:08:54.76\00:08:56.23 people kind of say, well Jesus had an advantage over us. 00:08:56.26\00:09:02.07 But really He is the biggest target there's ever been. 00:09:02.10\00:09:05.07 The devil loves to defeat you and I, 00:09:05.11\00:09:06.88 but if he can get Jesus to fail 00:09:06.91\00:09:08.71 and this was not charade or play or a drama, 00:09:08.74\00:09:12.25 this was the real possibility. 00:09:12.28\00:09:14.25 A real enemy, a real temptation 00:09:14.28\00:09:17.02 and a real victory that Jesus won. Yes. 00:09:17.05\00:09:19.79 We're not playing here games. 00:09:19.82\00:09:22.36 It was something real that happen, 00:09:22.39\00:09:24.53 Jesus confronted the real Satan there in the wilderness. 00:09:24.56\00:09:27.56 I mean can you imagine two of them 00:09:27.60\00:09:28.93 they knew each other from the heavenly places 00:09:28.96\00:09:31.50 there from the beginning, 00:09:31.53\00:09:32.90 now there was a more decisive. 00:09:32.93\00:09:35.00 By the way, the word that is used here in Hebrew 00:09:35.04\00:09:38.94 that Satan came to tempt Jesus is the same word perazzo, 00:09:38.97\00:09:44.98 that is used in the gospel of Luke 00:09:45.01\00:09:47.58 with the reference to the Garden of Gethsemane 00:09:47.62\00:09:50.49 and Jesus said, the time has come 00:09:50.52\00:09:52.09 for Son of Man to be tempted. 00:09:52.12\00:09:54.69 He's telling us you see so many times 00:09:54.72\00:09:56.12 we are talking of Garden of Gethsemane, 00:09:56.16\00:09:58.29 how Jesus was tempted. 00:09:58.33\00:09:59.69 And actually the destiny of all human beings 00:09:59.73\00:10:02.80 were at stake there in Garden of Gethsemane. 00:10:02.83\00:10:04.90 By the way, what happen here in the wilderness, 00:10:04.93\00:10:07.94 it's equal to the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:10:07.97\00:10:10.77 Actually it was the decisive point you see, 00:10:10.81\00:10:13.84 at the baptism the Father make the announcement 00:10:13.88\00:10:17.11 this is My Son. 00:10:17.15\00:10:19.18 Now the Sonship of Jesus had to be tempted. 00:10:19.21\00:10:22.25 Would Jesus use what He had as the Son of God? 00:10:22.28\00:10:28.89 Would He use that for Himself 00:10:28.92\00:10:31.99 for His own advantage when He needed-- 00:10:32.03\00:10:34.83 Let's make true we're not missing the question. 00:10:34.83\00:10:37.20 The temptations deal them with Jesus methods, 00:10:37.23\00:10:40.84 His use of His identity and who He is 00:10:40.87\00:10:43.67 and His power in His ministry. 00:10:43.71\00:10:46.07 According to Philippians okay, 00:10:46.11\00:10:49.14 Jesus had to empty Himself 00:10:49.18\00:10:50.88 of all divine prerogatives and privileges He had. 00:10:50.91\00:10:53.31 He had to become as ordinary human beings 00:10:53.35\00:10:56.35 to show us that the victory over sin is possible, 00:10:56.38\00:11:00.29 and how the victory over sin is possible. 00:11:00.32\00:11:03.79 So He came to human experience to become as one of us. 00:11:03.83\00:11:09.13 As a man living in this life 00:11:09.16\00:11:12.27 He had to depend on the divine assistance 00:11:12.30\00:11:16.07 and help as every ordinary being. 00:11:16.10\00:11:18.81 When He was hungry, He had to go through our experience. 00:11:18.84\00:11:22.41 He couldn't make a miracle to feed Himself. 00:11:22.44\00:11:25.85 If He used His divine prerogatives 00:11:25.88\00:11:29.05 in anyway for Himself, 00:11:29.08\00:11:30.55 His mission would fail and Satan knew it, 00:11:30.59\00:11:32.69 that's why he came to tempt Him there. 00:11:32.72\00:11:34.09 So first temptation deals with, 00:11:34.12\00:11:36.36 Jesus will You use Your powers for Your own benefit. 00:11:36.39\00:11:40.36 Well, Glenn, can I ask you something? 00:11:40.40\00:11:41.96 The first temptation of Jesus is the reference to food 00:11:42.00\00:11:45.77 is there something that comes to our mind 00:11:45.80\00:11:48.67 about certain temptation that comes with your food? 00:11:48.70\00:11:51.14 Aren't these the essential issues? 00:11:51.17\00:11:53.64 Actually it's the Garden of Eden. 00:11:53.68\00:11:56.98 The way how sin came 00:11:57.01\00:11:58.38 in this world came through forth. 00:11:58.41\00:12:01.78 But I'd like us Glenn to go to something else. 00:12:01.82\00:12:05.55 When we read the Book of Hebrews 00:12:05.59\00:12:06.99 and it's in close relationships with Matthew Chapter 4 00:12:07.02\00:12:11.66 and it tell us that Jesus when He came down to this earth, 00:12:11.69\00:12:16.53 He was tempted with every aspect of sin as we are, 00:12:16.56\00:12:21.17 but He did not commit sin. 00:12:21.20\00:12:22.94 And so many times I meet Christians 00:12:22.97\00:12:25.81 and when they read these texts, 00:12:25.84\00:12:28.01 they think that Jesus had to be tempted 00:12:28.04\00:12:32.15 in every detail of sin. 00:12:32.18\00:12:34.65 I don't need to remind our viewers 00:12:34.68\00:12:37.35 that Jesus was not tempted with reference to drugs, 00:12:37.39\00:12:41.06 watching porno, internet or movies etcetera that. 00:12:41.09\00:12:45.23 Then what is the meaning of this? 00:12:45.26\00:12:47.86 Actually the first temptations of Jesus 00:12:47.93\00:12:51.73 are very instructive to this point. 00:12:51.77\00:12:54.64 First we have to ask our self that question, 00:12:54.67\00:12:57.27 what are those temptations? 00:12:57.31\00:12:58.91 How does the Bible define sin? 00:12:58.94\00:13:01.11 I would like us, Glenn, first to go to one probably 00:13:01.14\00:13:04.71 crucial Biblical text to explain us how temptations, 00:13:04.75\00:13:08.92 how--actually we are tempted. 00:13:08.95\00:13:10.62 What is the nature of that temptation 00:13:10.65\00:13:12.42 and what is actually the concept of sin? 00:13:12.45\00:13:14.89 It's First John 2:16. Okay, First John 2:16. Yes. 00:13:14.92\00:13:20.60 And we're looking now at the issues, 00:13:20.63\00:13:23.03 the categories and the issues-- 00:13:23.06\00:13:24.43 Categories of sin. Okay. 00:13:24.47\00:13:25.83 In order to understand what is in Matthew Chapter 4. 00:13:25.87\00:13:27.37 "For all that is in the world.'' 00:13:27.40\00:13:29.37 He's describing wilderness now. 00:13:29.40\00:13:31.71 "Lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, 00:13:31.74\00:13:35.01 and the pride of life 00:13:35.04\00:13:36.41 is not of the Father but is of the world." 00:13:36.44\00:13:37.81 So three things it says, lust of the flesh, 00:13:37.85\00:13:41.38 lust of the eyes, and the pride of life 00:13:41.42\00:13:42.88 is not of the Father but is of the world. 00:13:42.92\00:13:44.85 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; 00:13:44.89\00:13:47.02 but he who does the will of God abides forever." 00:13:47.06\00:13:48.79 So actually, all the sin condition 00:13:48.82\00:13:50.59 that human beings can summarize in these three ways. 00:13:50.63\00:13:54.63 It has to do with our eyes, lust of the eyes, 00:13:54.66\00:13:57.37 it has to do with our flesh and with the pride of life. 00:13:57.40\00:14:01.57 By the way, it is through all these that we are tempted. 00:14:01.60\00:14:06.07 You see these are three major temptations. 00:14:06.11\00:14:08.68 All other temptations at the subgroups 00:14:08.71\00:14:12.85 of this doesn't make sense. Yes. 00:14:12.88\00:14:15.15 Everything is result of the obvious. 00:14:15.18\00:14:18.62 You're also suggesting here that Jesus is in the wilderness, 00:14:18.65\00:14:22.09 but back then there was an issue in a garden 00:14:22.12\00:14:25.59 and we want to come to that in just a moment. 00:14:25.63\00:14:27.66 So we're gonna take a break right here. 00:14:27.73\00:14:29.13 We're gonna go back and look at some of the other temptations 00:14:29.16\00:14:31.50 right after the break, we'll be right back. 00:14:31.53\00:14:33.20
