We're here looking at the marvelous description 00:00:01.33\00:00:04.07 of the baptism that John the Baptist 00:00:04.10\00:00:06.63 was doing in the wilderness. 00:00:06.67\00:00:08.60 Look at Matthew, Chapter 3, verse 11. 00:00:08.64\00:00:11.14 "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, 00:00:11.17\00:00:13.71 but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, 00:00:13.74\00:00:17.05 whose sandals I'm not worthy to carry." 00:00:17.08\00:00:19.18 So you see baptism and also the preparation 00:00:19.21\00:00:21.35 for someone who is coming. 00:00:21.38\00:00:22.72 Oh yeah. You see when John Baptist speaks, 00:00:22.75\00:00:27.99 he speaks like ancient prophets, 00:00:28.02\00:00:29.76 not like Greek philosophers. 00:00:29.79\00:00:31.46 Greek philosophers, they just speak to few chosen one, 00:00:31.49\00:00:36.10 but you see the message of the prophets concerns 00:00:36.13\00:00:39.57 all people, but--but the problem is, 00:00:39.60\00:00:42.84 not all people respond. 00:00:42.87\00:00:44.64 By the way, we will see the case of John the Baptist, 00:00:44.67\00:00:46.74 the majority of people did not respond 00:00:46.78\00:00:49.24 to that-- that message. 00:00:49.28\00:00:51.71 Now He talks about baptizing with the Holy Spirit 00:00:51.75\00:00:54.92 and with fire, the one who will come after him. 00:00:54.95\00:00:58.72 So, there is an anticipation, he's preaching many are coming 00:00:58.75\00:01:02.82 and many are not favorably accepting him 00:01:02.86\00:01:05.83 especially the leaders. 00:01:05.86\00:01:07.30 Actually, this verse 11 is the explanation 00:01:07.30\00:01:10.27 of that metaphor to make the roads straight. 00:01:10.30\00:01:14.40 Yes. So, he's telling them, 00:01:14.44\00:01:17.24 I try to bring you to repentance, 00:01:17.27\00:01:20.18 to prepare your heart for the coming 00:01:20.21\00:01:22.48 of the messiah and for His message. 00:01:22.51\00:01:24.68 So when messiah comes, you'll respond 00:01:24.71\00:01:27.92 to his call and to his message. 00:01:27.95\00:01:31.29 I want to bring you through my preaching to repentance. 00:01:31.32\00:01:35.29 When messiah comes, when messiah comes 00:01:35.32\00:01:38.26 then He will really lead you in that way that you want me, 00:01:38.29\00:01:43.33 in the sense He's greater than me. 00:01:43.37\00:01:45.43 And in verse 13, then Jesus came, 00:01:45.47\00:01:48.80 Jesus comes into the scene now. 00:01:48.84\00:01:51.91 We would expect almost the fanfare. 00:01:51.94\00:01:54.21 The one who's been anticipated, now everyone recognizes Him yet, 00:01:54.24\00:01:58.21 but what happens at this first great event of Jesus ministry? 00:01:58.25\00:02:01.88 But Glenn, keep something in mind, 00:02:01.92\00:02:03.92 with reference what you said in verse 11, 00:02:03.95\00:02:06.49 I baptize you with water for repentance. 00:02:06.52\00:02:09.49 What was the purpose of John's baptism? 00:02:09.52\00:02:13.33 Repent. So those who are baptized, 00:02:13.36\00:02:16.00 it means they repented from the sins. 00:02:16.03\00:02:17.70 And so now he sees Jesus is coming to him. 00:02:17.73\00:02:23.51 He recognize Jesus immediately, first he was his cousin, etc., 00:02:23.54\00:02:26.98 and differently the Holy Spirit showed him 00:02:27.01\00:02:28.91 that actually it was messiah. 00:02:28.94\00:02:31.21 You read in verse 13, that Jesus arrived from 00:02:31.25\00:02:34.18 Galilee and to Jordan, coming to John to be baptized 00:02:34.22\00:02:37.85 and John tried to prevent Him saying, 00:02:37.89\00:02:40.82 I have need to be baptized by you and you come to me. 00:02:40.86\00:02:47.03 Keep in mind, John's purpose 00:02:47.03\00:02:48.40 was to baptize people who repented from sin. 00:02:48.43\00:02:51.03 So, why would now Jesus be baptized. 00:02:51.07\00:02:52.97 So, He's saying Jesus you don't need to repent-- 00:02:53.00\00:02:55.14 He needs repentance. Actually, I need repentance. 00:02:55.17\00:02:57.91 You need to baptize me. So why is Jesus baptized? 00:02:57.94\00:03:01.68 Actually, we have Jesus made very straight answer. 00:03:01.71\00:03:05.31 And Jesus answering said to him, actually I really want 00:03:05.35\00:03:10.39 what the Greek says, they say, John leave the discussion aside. 00:03:10.42\00:03:14.79 We don't want now to talk about that. 00:03:14.82\00:03:16.66 He said, in this way, I wanted to be baptized. 00:03:16.69\00:03:21.33 I've to fulfill what is right, what is righteousness, 00:03:21.36\00:03:26.63 but John quickly recognize it and said John left him alone, 00:03:26.67\00:03:31.21 John did not want to argue with Jesus any longer. 00:03:31.24\00:03:36.71 Could we explore the meaning of Jesus baptism 00:03:36.75\00:03:39.65 and then what's the message for us today? 00:03:39.68\00:03:42.75 Well, we can now really talk a lot and lot about that. 00:03:42.78\00:03:46.92 Keep one more time, what was the purpose of Jesus? 00:03:46.96\00:03:50.59 To save His people from the sins. 00:03:50.63\00:03:54.30 I hope that we still keep in mind what we talk before 00:03:54.36\00:03:57.67 is in order to save his people from their sins, 00:03:57.70\00:04:01.27 Jesus had to go to the experience of his realm. 00:04:01.30\00:04:04.17 Do you remember that we talked in Chapter 1, 00:04:04.21\00:04:06.31 we talked in Chapter 2, now since all the people of God, 00:04:06.34\00:04:13.18 all Israel in the past, and all those people 00:04:13.21\00:04:16.22 who would come to this world in the future 00:04:16.25\00:04:18.55 they have to be baptized. 00:04:18.59\00:04:20.46 They're imperfect people, but Jesus decided to go 00:04:20.49\00:04:23.76 through the ritual of baptism, 00:04:23.79\00:04:25.56 to be baptized for every human being in history. 00:04:25.59\00:04:29.73 See those God's people, that are mentioned in genealogy, 00:04:29.76\00:04:32.40 they were disobedient. They were unfaithful to God. 00:04:32.43\00:04:35.50 And now Jesus steps into that situation. 00:04:35.54\00:04:38.14 He wants to be baptized on behalf of them because 00:04:38.17\00:04:40.44 He wants to save people from their sins. 00:04:40.48\00:04:43.98 And Matthew tells us now that this is a great theophany, 00:04:44.01\00:04:47.92 an encounter where we see the Father, 00:04:47.95\00:04:50.65 the Son, the Holy Spirit all at this event. 00:04:50.69\00:04:54.39 See Jesus was willing, keep in mind when Jesus came 00:04:54.42\00:04:57.53 down to the Earth, He had to empty Himself 00:04:57.56\00:05:00.46 of all the divine provocatives. 00:05:00.50\00:05:02.50 He had to step into the human situation, 00:05:02.53\00:05:05.07 to become a human being, to become a flesh, 00:05:05.10\00:05:09.00 to come to save human flesh, to save human beings. 00:05:09.04\00:05:13.41 So, He has to go completely to the human experience 00:05:13.44\00:05:16.78 and He was willing even to submit himself to fulfill 00:05:16.81\00:05:20.65 the requirements of righteousness for sinners. 00:05:20.68\00:05:23.32 He was baptized for all. 00:05:23.35\00:05:24.99 Glenn, please allow me at this moment, 00:05:25.02\00:05:28.52 I'd like to use one illustration. 00:05:28.56\00:05:30.83 It was a number of years ago when I was in 00:05:30.86\00:05:33.63 the pastoral ministry, there was one lady 00:05:33.66\00:05:36.46 started coming to my evangelistic preachings 00:05:36.50\00:05:39.57 and at the end, she came to me 00:05:39.60\00:05:41.84 and she expressed desire to be baptized. 00:05:41.87\00:05:44.97 And she was baptized, she became a powerful witness 00:05:45.01\00:05:49.01 for Christ, but one day she came to my home and she said, 00:05:49.04\00:05:53.28 you know, I'm married. I said I know. 00:05:53.31\00:05:55.08 She told me few things about her husband and she said, 00:05:55.12\00:05:59.42 I want to be witness for Christ, 00:05:59.45\00:06:02.09 but how to be witness to my own husband. 00:06:02.12\00:06:05.79 I said, just pray for him and we prayed, etc. 00:06:05.83\00:06:09.43 Just to make a long story short, one day she came to me, 00:06:09.46\00:06:12.70 she told me that her husband was in the hospital, 00:06:12.73\00:06:16.14 terminal cancer. The doctors told him, 00:06:16.17\00:06:19.07 it was not even matter of weeks, 00:06:19.11\00:06:20.94 it was a matter of days, how long he would live. 00:06:20.98\00:06:23.65 I said, let me go and visit him, 00:06:23.68\00:06:25.21 earlier to the hospital he rejected me completely. 00:06:25.25\00:06:29.12 Then I came second time and finally we became friends. 00:06:29.15\00:06:34.19 And he asked me openly, can God forgive me all my sins? 00:06:34.22\00:06:39.59 He said, I blasphemed against God. 00:06:39.63\00:06:42.00 I opened the Bible, I read him all those comforting text, etc., 00:06:42.03\00:06:46.00 and finally I gave him Bible studies. 00:06:46.03\00:06:50.17 He was already seriously-- I mean he couldn't even move, 00:06:50.21\00:06:54.31 and he asked me, said, brother Ranko, I said, yes. 00:06:54.34\00:06:57.48 Would you pray for me. I said, yes. 00:06:57.51\00:07:01.12 Is there anything in particular? 00:07:01.15\00:07:03.22 He said that God heals me, that's a good desire, you know. 00:07:03.25\00:07:07.36 But you'll sometimes, we misunderstand he said, 00:07:07.39\00:07:10.29 please brother, I want to let you know 00:07:10.33\00:07:12.39 I'm not afraid of death, I will die. 00:07:12.43\00:07:16.50 Then the fourth question, God can just give me five days 00:07:16.53\00:07:19.83 of healing that I can come to the church and to be baptized. 00:07:19.87\00:07:23.77 So his desire was to be healed in order-- 00:07:23.81\00:07:25.71 Just about--I said after that I will come back 00:07:25.74\00:07:28.11 to the hospital, I settled that issue to God. I said-- 00:07:28.14\00:07:32.38 Ranko, you're suggesting that baptism is that important. 00:07:32.41\00:07:35.38 It's important. This is what John makes in verse 11, 00:07:35.42\00:07:39.82 repentance and then baptism. 00:07:39.85\00:07:41.72 That's why Jesus had to go through baptism. 00:07:41.76\00:07:43.83 So, what did you tell the man? 00:07:43.86\00:07:45.23 And I told him we will pray to God, 00:07:45.26\00:07:48.53 but I said, if it is God's will to give you, if not, 00:07:48.56\00:07:52.17 I opened Matthew Chapter 3 and I told to him 00:07:52.20\00:07:55.17 if God does not answer our prayer. 00:07:55.20\00:07:57.31 If you have to close your eyes, I just want to tell you, 00:07:57.34\00:08:01.68 you can fall asleep, believe that Jesus will come one day, 00:08:01.71\00:08:07.02 stand there on your tomb and call you by name. 00:08:07.05\00:08:10.69 With a full assurance that when Jesus was baptized 00:08:10.72\00:08:15.59 on the river of Jordan, he was baptized also for you, 00:08:15.62\00:08:19.36 when he was baptized, he had you in his mind. 00:08:19.39\00:08:23.97 Actually it was two days after that the person fell asleep, 00:08:24.00\00:08:29.24 he died, with full assurance that his Savior, 00:08:29.27\00:08:32.57 they're in Jordan river, 00:08:32.61\00:08:34.44 actually he was baptized with him. 00:08:34.48\00:08:36.95 That was actually the significance of this baptism 00:08:36.98\00:08:40.52 and I'd like to say to the viewers. 00:08:40.55\00:08:42.68 May be there are some of you watching this program, 00:08:42.72\00:08:46.72 may be you're in the situation and whatever the situation is 00:08:46.76\00:08:51.53 and you would like to set your relationship 00:08:51.56\00:08:53.76 with God by baptism, etc., and it is impossible for you. 00:08:53.80\00:08:57.80 I don't know what situation is, I don't know what 00:08:57.83\00:09:00.37 circumstances are, but I just want to tell you, 00:09:00.40\00:09:04.71 go down on your knees, ask God to step into your life. 00:09:04.74\00:09:10.25 God will accept you as you are. 00:09:10.28\00:09:13.35 Even though you cannot go under that water to be baptized. 00:09:13.38\00:09:17.42 But the gospel of Matthew Chapter 3, 00:09:17.45\00:09:20.29 provide full assurance to you, that Jesus was baptized for you. 00:09:20.32\00:09:27.30 And He accepts you as you are. 00:09:27.30\00:09:29.46 This is actually the hope that we get here 00:09:29.50\00:09:32.03 from the gospel of Matthew. 00:09:32.07\00:09:33.94 Now let me make sure no one misunderstands you, 00:09:33.97\00:09:36.20 because someone might say, oh, then I don't need to be 00:09:36.24\00:09:39.37 baptized if I could be, it's not that important, 00:09:39.41\00:09:42.48 Jesus baptized instead of me. 00:09:42.51\00:09:44.35 You're not at all saying that it's perfectly all right. 00:09:44.38\00:09:47.22 You're saying that this is a vital part of discipleship. 00:09:47.25\00:09:50.52 It comes in at the end of the gospel of Matthew. 00:09:50.55\00:09:52.99 But you're talking about a unique situation 00:09:53.02\00:09:54.82 where person is not able. Okay, you see, 00:09:54.86\00:09:56.36 John the Baptist message was, come to be baptized 00:09:56.39\00:10:00.16 and he was baptizing-- baptizing people. 00:10:00.20\00:10:02.90 And baptism is like wedding, it's a public announcement 00:10:02.93\00:10:07.97 that I have decided to walk with Jesus Christ through this life. 00:10:08.00\00:10:12.54 This is not an option given to us, 00:10:12.57\00:10:14.51 whether I want or not. 00:10:14.54\00:10:16.61 Is the same way, I fell in love with that lady. 00:10:16.64\00:10:21.52 And the climax of that, the crown of our relationship 00:10:21.55\00:10:26.45 was the wedding. Yes. 00:10:26.49\00:10:28.09 That was not an option. That was really our decision, 00:10:28.12\00:10:30.99 we--because we wanted to make that public announcement, 00:10:31.03\00:10:34.00 but we're talking about the people, 00:10:34.03\00:10:35.60 who were--who find themselves in certain circumstances, 00:10:35.63\00:10:39.07 that baptism is impossible for them. 00:10:39.10\00:10:41.64 May I ask just one more question, 00:10:41.67\00:10:43.24 Ranko, about Jesus' baptism? 00:10:43.27\00:10:46.11 It begins this public ministry. Yes. 00:10:46.14\00:10:49.94 Is that something that needs to be more in our thinking. 00:10:49.98\00:10:52.78 Some of us just feel like. 00:10:52.81\00:10:54.15 Well, I'm baptized and that's the end of it. 00:10:54.18\00:10:56.12 But baptism isn't a graduation, it's not the completion 00:10:56.15\00:10:59.92 of a bit of study and now I've arrived and I stopped. 00:10:59.95\00:11:03.29 See, even though the baptism of Jesus, 00:11:03.32\00:11:06.49 the purpose was different than ours. 00:11:06.53\00:11:09.13 This is what John Baptist misunderstood 00:11:09.16\00:11:11.50 and after that he understood. 00:11:11.53\00:11:13.13 Jesus was not baptized because of His repentance that He did. 00:11:13.17\00:11:16.77 He was baptized because of my repentance, 00:11:16.81\00:11:20.61 to be--to be accepted to Him. 00:11:20.64\00:11:24.01 But before Jesus stepped into the situation of His mission 00:11:24.05\00:11:28.15 to go to save people to proclaim the gospel. 00:11:28.18\00:11:30.95 Actually Jesus began it with the baptism and you'll notice here 00:11:30.99\00:11:34.92 that with the baptism, there is proclamation. 00:11:34.96\00:11:38.06 This is my beloved son. 00:11:38.09\00:11:41.30 There is something with the baptism. 00:11:41.33\00:11:42.93 There is--that sole proclamation of God, 00:11:42.96\00:11:45.07 when we are accepted by God, in the special way, 00:11:45.10\00:11:47.74 but what is the next thing is, the Holy Spirit descended 00:11:47.77\00:11:51.44 on Jesus and power of Jesus work his ministry and the baptism, 00:11:51.47\00:11:55.44 yours and mine, the Holy Spirit comes. 00:11:55.48\00:11:58.35 We become God's procession. Yes. 00:11:58.38\00:12:00.85 The Holy Spirit comes to His territory and the Holy Spirit 00:12:00.88\00:12:03.79 then powers us in fighting against sin, 00:12:03.82\00:12:06.62 to live righteous life, and of course to proclaim 00:12:06.65\00:12:09.12 the love of God to the suffering humanity. 00:12:09.16\00:12:12.16 What a wonderful thing when the voice from heaven speaks. 00:12:12.19\00:12:15.90 As you read the gospel Matthew and you get to this point. 00:12:15.93\00:12:18.77 This is my beloved son. 00:12:18.80\00:12:20.50 There's no question who Jesus is? 00:12:20.54\00:12:22.24 This is a clear identifier, let's wrap it up now, 00:12:22.27\00:12:25.61 what should we know? Yes, see, our Savior, 00:12:25.64\00:12:28.34 who came to save His people from their sins. 00:12:28.38\00:12:32.31 He paid such great attention and put such emphasis on baptism 00:12:32.35\00:12:39.62 as the beginning, the first step into His ministry. 00:12:39.65\00:12:42.82 First, He set an example to us, 00:12:42.86\00:12:45.19 what we are supposed to do in this life. 00:12:45.23\00:12:48.80 So this is a great call to all of us to follow 00:12:48.83\00:12:53.50 into the footsteps of the Master. 00:12:53.54\00:12:57.64 And if you really want to follow the example of Jesus Christ, 00:12:57.67\00:13:01.94 it's a call to each one of us that we repent, 00:13:01.98\00:13:05.78 that we turn our relationships toward God. 00:13:05.81\00:13:09.28 Turn toward God and that through baptism that we make 00:13:09.32\00:13:12.39 that public announcement that we've chosen God in our lives. 00:13:12.42\00:13:15.46
