Hi, I'm Glenn Russell. 00:00:21.85\00:00:23.35 Welcome to another in the series of Books of the Book. 00:00:23.39\00:00:27.62 This is a series exploring the gospel according to Matthew. 00:00:27.66\00:00:31.36 I like you to meet our guest teacher, Dr. Ranko Stefanovic. 00:00:31.39\00:00:34.46 Ranko, welcome, glad to have you back again. 00:00:34.50\00:00:36.87 This is another in the series. 00:00:36.90\00:00:39.07 It's been fascinating so far to 00:00:39.10\00:00:41.20 begin to get into this wonderful book. 00:00:41.24\00:00:43.34 We got more ahead. 00:00:43.37\00:00:45.31 Welcome, glad to have you with us. 00:00:45.34\00:00:47.11 Glenn, it's so nice. 00:00:47.14\00:00:48.94 We were in the same department as teachers, 00:00:48.98\00:00:50.81 we're coming for about nine years 00:00:50.85\00:00:53.25 and it's so nice now to be together here 00:00:53.28\00:00:55.95 and open the word of God. 00:00:55.98\00:00:57.62 Now let's ask God to lead us in that process. 00:00:57.65\00:01:00.42 Let's begin with prayer. 00:01:00.46\00:01:02.42 Lord, thank You for the assurance. 00:01:02.46\00:01:04.56 Wherever two or three are gathered 00:01:04.59\00:01:07.03 You're also gathered to teach us from Your word. 00:01:07.03\00:01:10.10 We asked that Your Spirit may guide us and teach us. 00:01:10.13\00:01:12.70 In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Amen. 00:01:12.73\00:01:16.24 Ranko, we're talking about the gospel according to Matthew. 00:01:16.27\00:01:19.61 Matthew is writing to a--originally 00:01:19.64\00:01:23.95 to a predominantly Jewish audience 00:01:23.98\00:01:25.78 and he's showing that Jesus is 00:01:25.81\00:01:27.35 the fulfillment of all their hopes, 00:01:27.38\00:01:29.55 all their wishes, all their dreams. 00:01:29.58\00:01:31.95 Just as we would say today, 00:01:31.99\00:01:33.32 Jesus is the fulfillment of all that we could wish for. 00:01:33.36\00:01:36.76 But more than that, he's showing us 00:01:36.79\00:01:38.19 that Jesus has a particular role, 00:01:38.23\00:01:40.53 has an identity as one from the Father, 00:01:40.56\00:01:43.80 and now we've moved through Chapter one 00:01:43.83\00:01:46.94 with the genealogy of Chapter two 00:01:46.97\00:01:48.80 with his birth and now where are we going this time? 00:01:48.84\00:01:52.07 Glenn, I think that it is very important 00:01:53.11\00:01:55.98 to underscore something is. 00:01:56.01\00:01:57.98 You see the gospel of Matthew 00:01:58.01\00:01:59.81 was originally written to certain people 00:01:59.85\00:02:04.45 who were of Jewish background. 00:02:04.49\00:02:07.22 So the language of the gospel of 00:02:07.26\00:02:08.72 Matthew appealed to them. 00:02:08.76\00:02:11.69 And this, similar could be said about 00:02:11.73\00:02:14.93 every book of the Bible. 00:02:14.96\00:02:16.43 But, even though the Bible was written to certain people, 00:02:16.46\00:02:19.93 it was not written only for them, 00:02:19.97\00:02:22.44 it was written for all people 00:02:22.47\00:02:24.17 including us who lived there. 00:02:24.21\00:02:25.84 This is very, very important. 00:02:25.87\00:02:28.14 So in order to understand how that Bible 00:02:28.18\00:02:30.95 speaks to us today, first we have to understand 00:02:30.98\00:02:33.15 the language, the issues 00:02:33.18\00:02:36.08 that the book address to the original readers, 00:02:36.12\00:02:38.59 and then it replied the message to us today. 00:02:38.62\00:02:41.06 So there is ancient and yet a contemporary meaning. 00:02:41.09\00:02:44.76 It's timeless, but it's also timely, 00:02:44.79\00:02:46.83 it has a place and time. 00:02:46.86\00:02:48.63 All right, what are we going to explore this time? 00:02:48.66\00:02:50.83 You see so far, we saw that Jesus came, 00:02:50.87\00:02:54.44 what genealogy couldn't do, 00:02:54.47\00:02:55.94 Jesus came to save His people from their sins. 00:02:55.97\00:02:58.61 We saw last time how He came. 00:02:58.64\00:03:01.18 He was born as a baby in Bethlehem. 00:03:01.21\00:03:04.15 Now the time has come for Jesus 00:03:04.18\00:03:07.62 to begin his public, public ministry. 00:03:07.65\00:03:11.12 But there was somebody who came to announce 00:03:11.15\00:03:14.76 the coming of the Messiah. 00:03:14.79\00:03:16.73 The name of that person is John the Baptist. 00:03:16.76\00:03:19.63 This is actually what we read in Matthew Chapter 3. 00:03:19.66\00:03:23.53 So Glenn, I would really like to ask you, 00:03:23.57\00:03:26.67 if you can read Chapter 3, verses 1 to 6 00:03:26.70\00:03:30.64 and may be in sentence were to tell us 00:03:30.67\00:03:32.54 what we have in the rest up to verse 5. 00:03:32.57\00:03:36.11 All right, but first I'd like to 00:03:36.14\00:03:37.48 ask you very briefly a question. 00:03:37.51\00:03:39.35 Many people would wonder, how come there's not much 00:03:39.38\00:03:41.72 about Jesus early life, His years as a teenager, 00:03:41.75\00:03:45.82 young adult, goes from his birth to his ministry 00:03:45.85\00:03:48.49 with John and started there, why? 00:03:48.52\00:03:51.66 Because the Bible does not concern everything about Jesus. 00:03:51.69\00:03:55.66 What the Bible concern is, why Jesus came? 00:03:55.70\00:03:58.77 How He came? 00:03:58.80\00:04:00.34 See the reason that we read about His birth 00:04:00.37\00:04:02.24 is to understand that Jesus didn't came like 00:04:02.27\00:04:05.41 an ordinary human being, born as a result of 00:04:05.44\00:04:08.24 sexual relationships between a male and female. 00:04:08.28\00:04:12.01 Actually, He came because 00:04:12.05\00:04:13.85 the Holy Spirit made the inception, etc. 00:04:13.88\00:04:18.42 And now we see how He came 00:04:18.45\00:04:20.39 to save His people with climax to the cross. 00:04:20.42\00:04:23.79 So, the Bible is concerned of this. 00:04:23.83\00:04:25.53 Unfortunately, we would like to ask 00:04:25.56\00:04:27.30 many questions about Jesus and the Bible is quiet, 00:04:27.30\00:04:29.93 and that's the reason why in the second century those 00:04:29.96\00:04:32.97 apocryphal gospels appear, trying to fill that gap. 00:04:33.00\00:04:36.47 And fortunately, those things are not in the Bible. 00:04:36.50\00:04:38.54 Something will wait for heaven, won't we. Yes, yes. 00:04:38.57\00:04:40.94 Now you said something about some silence 00:04:40.98\00:04:43.71 and there has been some silence for a period of centuries. 00:04:43.75\00:04:47.95 Yeah. Okay. 00:04:47.98\00:04:49.52 You would like us to go now to John Chapter 3. 00:04:49.55\00:04:51.42 3:1, 2, 2-6. All right. 00:04:51.45\00:04:54.99 In those days John the Baptist came preaching 00:04:55.02\00:04:57.19 in the wilderness of Judea and saying, 00:04:57.23\00:04:59.73 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 00:04:59.76\00:05:03.00 For this is He who is spoken of by the prophet Isaiah saying, 00:05:03.03\00:05:06.97 'the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 00:05:07.00\00:05:09.67 prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.' 00:05:09.70\00:05:12.61 "Now John Himself was clothed in camel's hair 00:05:13.81\00:05:16.51 with a leather belt around his waist, 00:05:16.54\00:05:18.28 and his food was locusts and wild honey. 00:05:18.31\00:05:20.85 Then Jews from all Judea 00:05:20.88\00:05:22.55 and all the region around the Jordan 00:05:22.58\00:05:25.15 went out to Him and were baptized by Him 00:05:25.19\00:05:28.22 in the Jordan, confessing their sins. 00:05:28.26\00:05:31.66 But when he saw many of the Pharisees 00:05:31.69\00:05:33.19 and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, 00:05:33.23\00:05:36.10 "brood of vipers, who warned you 00:05:36.13\00:05:37.77 to flee from the wrath to come? 00:05:37.80\00:05:39.77 Therefore bear fruit worthy of repentance 00:05:39.80\00:05:42.74 and do not say to yourselves, we have Abraham as our father, 00:05:42.77\00:05:45.97 for I say to you that God is able to 00:05:46.01\00:05:48.44 raise up children to Abraham from these very stones." 00:05:48.48\00:05:51.88 Yes. Quite a character. 00:05:51.91\00:05:54.68 So a very unusual person appeared, 00:05:54.72\00:05:57.42 by the way this very unusual person, 00:05:57.45\00:05:59.95 unknown person in the gospel of Matthew. 00:06:00.06\00:06:02.22 We want to learn more about that person, 00:06:02.26\00:06:04.13 we have to read those at the gospel of Luke. 00:06:04.16\00:06:06.23 He was actually a relative of Jesus. 00:06:07.36\00:06:10.83 Was it common in this time period for God 00:06:10.87\00:06:13.40 to be sending prophets, Ranko? 00:06:13.44\00:06:15.50 See the problem is when we read 00:06:15.54\00:06:19.07 the Jewish writings from the time previous to-- 00:06:19.11\00:06:24.61 prior to this period we read that 00:06:24.65\00:06:27.22 they said this is the time of Malachi. 00:06:27.25\00:06:30.52 They said, there has not been a prophet among us. 00:06:30.55\00:06:34.72 The Jews believe strongly we have so many 00:06:34.76\00:06:39.89 indications in our writings that actually 00:06:39.93\00:06:42.33 the last prophet, the prophetic voice, 00:06:42.36\00:06:44.57 the last time was called prophet Malachi. 00:06:44.60\00:06:46.77 So can you imagine now a person appeared 00:06:46.80\00:06:49.60 dressed as the Old Testament prophets. 00:06:49.64\00:06:52.84 His message that he started preaching 00:06:52.87\00:06:55.18 was the message of the Old Testament prophets 00:06:55.21\00:06:58.31 and the results were the results 00:06:58.35\00:07:00.32 of the Old Testament prophets, 00:07:00.35\00:07:01.72 immediately people recognized 00:07:01.75\00:07:04.59 that God once again visited his people. 00:07:04.62\00:07:08.36 So there's a continuity and God is at work again. 00:07:08.39\00:07:11.13 Yes. Because something has happened. 00:07:11.16\00:07:13.86 But you see the question is why John the Baptist, 00:07:13.90\00:07:17.07 of course, we always say, 00:07:17.10\00:07:18.63 he came to prepare the way for the Messiah. 00:07:18.67\00:07:21.47 But there is one expression, 00:07:21.50\00:07:23.44 actually metaphorical section, 00:07:23.47\00:07:25.87 the John, he use when people ask him, who are you? 00:07:25.91\00:07:30.85 Actually, this is another quotation 00:07:30.88\00:07:33.62 from the Old Testament prophecies. 00:07:33.65\00:07:35.25 This time from the book of Isaiah. 00:07:35.28\00:07:37.55 He says, "the voice of the one crying 00:07:37.59\00:07:40.66 in the wilderness make ready 00:07:40.69\00:07:42.82 the way of the Lord, make his path straight." 00:07:42.86\00:07:46.36 And I know, the casual readers 00:07:46.39\00:07:48.43 they don't see anything significant, 00:07:48.46\00:07:50.33 but if we lived in the first century and those ancient times, 00:07:50.37\00:07:54.97 we would easily catch the significance of this statement. 00:07:56.50\00:08:00.41 By the way I'm coming from the part of the world 00:08:00.44\00:08:03.61 that it's border between the west and the east. 00:08:03.65\00:08:08.02 So I lived among the people with that eastern mentality 00:08:08.05\00:08:11.52 and I myself, I lived within that mentality. 00:08:11.55\00:08:14.86 Actually I was in one part of the world, 00:08:14.89\00:08:17.56 I lived for about two years and my brother took me 00:08:17.59\00:08:20.43 to one place to see something. 00:08:20.46\00:08:23.16 We were driving for about, let's say about 10 miles. 00:08:23.20\00:08:26.94 It was a fantastic road, but not maintained. 00:08:26.97\00:08:30.41 There was a lot of grass 00:08:30.44\00:08:31.84 and I said to my brother, there is no single car. 00:08:31.87\00:08:34.48 He said, just wait you will see it. 00:08:34.51\00:08:36.11 We came to the end of that road beautiful pavement, etc. 00:08:36.14\00:08:40.68 and there was a house, it was a mansion. 00:08:40.72\00:08:42.88 Beautiful, then there nobody lived there. 00:08:44.02\00:08:47.49 Some windows were broken, etc., 00:08:47.52\00:08:50.19 so I said, what's going on? 00:08:50.23\00:08:52.56 This road, this road just led only 00:08:52.59\00:08:54.20 to this house, there's nothing else. 00:08:54.23\00:08:56.03 He said, you know, when the US President 00:08:56.06\00:08:58.37 came to visit here this country, this road was built for him 00:08:58.40\00:09:02.47 and this mansion was built for him. 00:09:02.50\00:09:05.71 So when he left, it was abandoned, 00:09:05.74\00:09:08.48 nobody lived there and suddenly this text came to me. 00:09:08.51\00:09:11.81 You see in ancient times when the king, 00:09:11.85\00:09:14.08 when the ruler would go to visit 00:09:14.12\00:09:16.22 a part of his kingdom what did people do? 00:09:16.25\00:09:18.75 They actually fixed the roads. 00:09:18.79\00:09:21.46 There are some roads they were very, you know, curved, etc. 00:09:21.49\00:09:24.49 They tried to make it straight. 00:09:24.53\00:09:26.19 They provided good pavement, why? 00:09:26.23\00:09:28.63 Because the king is coming. 00:09:28.66\00:09:30.80 When the king is coming, you've to fix the road 00:09:30.83\00:09:33.57 so that the king has safe, you know, 00:09:33.60\00:09:36.47 journey and travel to that part of his kingdom. 00:09:36.50\00:09:40.31 Actually, the saying from the prophet Isaiah, 00:09:40.34\00:09:44.51 that Matthew inspired by the Holy Spirit 00:09:44.55\00:09:47.52 implies to John Baptist was exactly there 00:09:47.55\00:09:50.99 by keeping in mind that ancient custom 00:09:51.02\00:09:54.86 that is used here metaphorically. 00:09:54.89\00:09:56.46 The messiah is coming and the role of John 00:09:56.49\00:09:59.89 the Baptist was actually to fix, 00:09:59.93\00:10:02.40 to prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah. 00:10:02.43\00:10:06.03 All right, so the idea of his preparatory role, 00:10:06.07\00:10:09.57 of course that means if somebody 00:10:09.60\00:10:10.94 is coming after, if you're preparing. 00:10:10.97\00:10:12.61 You're preparing for something, 00:10:12.64\00:10:13.98 but let's explore a little bit more 00:10:14.01\00:10:15.71 about this role of John the Baptist. 00:10:15.74\00:10:18.35 He's dressed a certain way, 00:10:18.38\00:10:19.78 he's eating certain food, he has a certain message. 00:10:19.81\00:10:22.98 Let's explore that little bit more, Ranko. 00:10:23.02\00:10:25.05 John appeared evidently like 00:10:28.19\00:10:33.80 Prophet Elijah of the Old Testament. 00:10:33.83\00:10:36.83 You know that Elijah he lived some 00:10:36.87\00:10:39.07 isolated place there, etc., 00:10:39.10\00:10:41.84 and we have in the conclusion 00:10:41.87\00:10:45.11 of the Hebrew Scriptures, The Book of Malachi. 00:10:45.14\00:10:49.01 You know, the last verse of our Masoretic 00:10:49.04\00:10:53.95 text of the Old Testament is that before 00:10:53.98\00:10:57.29 the terrible day of the Lord comes, 00:10:58.99\00:11:01.16 God will send Mosses and Elijah 00:11:01.19\00:11:04.36 and they will turn the hearts of 00:11:04.39\00:11:05.83 parents, fathers, toward their sons, 00:11:05.86\00:11:08.63 and sons with their fathers. 00:11:08.66\00:11:10.87 So the Jewish people could easily recognize 00:11:10.90\00:11:15.34 in the coming of John the Baptist, 00:11:15.37\00:11:18.64 in the message that He preached. 00:11:18.67\00:11:20.71 The fulfillment of this Old Testament prophecy 00:11:20.74\00:11:24.21 and that's why you have a lot of people 00:11:24.25\00:11:28.32 running there to listen to John Baptist message. 00:11:28.35\00:11:30.89 So there is a tremendous surge of expectation. 00:11:30.92\00:11:34.86 What they've been hoping for, 00:11:34.89\00:11:36.22 longing for, this Messiah, his deliver. 00:11:36.26\00:11:40.00 Now something is happening 00:11:40.03\00:11:41.50 is giving him idea He's coming soon. 00:11:41.53\00:11:43.60 Actually, when you see the context of 00:11:43.63\00:11:46.50 John the Baptist message, it's actually 00:11:46.53\00:11:49.30 the content of Elijah's message. 00:11:49.34\00:11:52.17 I mean it's really cut to the truth. 00:11:52.21\00:11:54.38 What is the key word of John the Baptist message? 00:11:54.41\00:11:57.68 Said, repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 00:11:57.71\00:12:03.79 I know Christians are using very often the word repent. 00:12:03.82\00:12:09.19 And we have all kind of ideas 00:12:09.22\00:12:11.03 and so many times people are asking me, 00:12:11.06\00:12:12.86 what is the meaning of repentance? 00:12:12.89\00:12:14.56 Is that repentance a genuine repentance, 00:12:14.60\00:12:16.93 un-genuine repentance, so called repentance? 00:12:16.97\00:12:19.40 You know people have, we've to understand 00:12:19.43\00:12:21.60 that Hebrew word shuv simply means turn around. 00:12:21.64\00:12:27.41 A person is going in certain direction 00:12:28.74\00:12:32.58 like in the parable of the prodigal son. 00:12:32.61\00:12:35.88 And the person comes to his senses 00:12:35.92\00:12:38.69 and the person makes turn around 00:12:38.72\00:12:41.99 and going back to God, that's what repentance. 00:12:42.02\00:12:43.86 So it's a U-turn and about phase. 00:12:43.89\00:12:45.93 In the New Testament, metanoia, 00:12:45.96\00:12:48.83 it means to change your mind, 00:12:48.86\00:12:50.83 you follow after your mind changed. 00:12:50.87\00:12:52.60 This is in the prodigal son. 00:12:52.63\00:12:53.97 He came to his senses and he said 00:12:54.00\00:12:56.97 I'm going back to my Father. 00:12:57.01\00:12:59.44 This is what repentance is. 00:12:59.47\00:13:00.98 So, John the Baptist message was, 00:13:01.01\00:13:03.58 you are away from God. 00:13:03.61\00:13:06.11 You're disobedient to God. 00:13:06.15\00:13:07.78 You see they were not -- 00:13:07.82\00:13:09.95 they once welcomed the messiah, etc. 00:13:09.98\00:13:12.19 So, John the Baptist said you have to make 00:13:12.22\00:13:14.32 that significant around in your life. 00:13:14.36\00:13:17.13 You've to come back to God and that's how 00:13:17.16\00:13:20.16 the coming of the messiah will be meaningful to you. 00:13:20.20\00:13:23.53 And so that whole message is summed up in that second verse, 00:13:23.57\00:13:26.40 "repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 00:13:26.43\00:13:29.80 It was calling for a radical change of Abraham. 00:13:29.84\00:13:32.61 They expected others to repent, 00:13:32.64\00:13:34.44 but this is a message you need to repent. 00:13:35.84\00:13:39.35 And then, and then, if you see the rest, 00:13:39.38\00:13:42.58 all kind of people were coming to listen 00:13:42.62\00:13:45.25 to John the Baptist, but his message was, 00:13:45.29\00:13:48.99 turn around in your relationship with God, 00:13:49.02\00:13:52.29 look into the world in completely different way. 00:13:52.33\00:13:55.23 Change the course of your action 00:13:55.26\00:13:57.60 and try to correct the things that you have done in the past. 00:13:57.63\00:14:00.44 That was actually the message of John the Baptist. 00:14:00.47\00:14:02.24 And we're gonna get much more into 00:14:03.51\00:14:04.84 the meaning of repentance right after our break. 00:14:04.87\00:14:06.94
