We are exploring the birth of Jesus 00:00:01.33\00:00:03.23 in the record of Book of Matthew. 00:00:03.26\00:00:05.20 We have noticed Mary's response 00:00:05.23\00:00:07.47 and Joseph's response of faith and obedience. 00:00:07.50\00:00:10.21 Now we are entering into Chapter 2 and 00:00:10.24\00:00:13.11 we are seeing these, these Arab philosophers 00:00:13.14\00:00:15.81 from the East who are coming, 00:00:15.84\00:00:17.58 they've come to Jerusalem, Ranko. 00:00:17.61\00:00:19.88 Why do they go there? And what are they looking for? 00:00:19.91\00:00:22.68 What's their question they are seeking after God? 00:00:22.72\00:00:24.65 You know, usually when Bible readers 00:00:24.69\00:00:28.02 they read this event, they think that 00:00:28.06\00:00:30.26 we have here a story that does not fit to reality. 00:00:30.29\00:00:33.29 They've said, you know, Judea was a small country 00:00:33.33\00:00:35.86 and the birth of one child that later 00:00:35.90\00:00:38.30 became the leader, you know Gudhrabai, 00:00:38.33\00:00:40.60 does not fit to reality. 00:00:40.64\00:00:42.04 I just want to read something 00:00:42.07\00:00:44.51 to the readers is, you know, 00:00:44.54\00:00:46.74 Jesus died somewhere in the year 33, 00:00:46.78\00:00:50.11 up to time you know, 00:00:50.15\00:00:52.21 31 okay. 31, yeah. 00:00:52.25\00:00:55.18 I would like something we have from 00:00:55.22\00:00:57.59 two Roman historians, one was Tacitus who lived 00:00:57.62\00:01:01.52 from 60 AD to 120 and another one was 00:01:01.56\00:01:05.03 Suetonius from 75 to 160 00:01:05.06\00:01:07.76 to telling us something very significant. 00:01:07.83\00:01:09.73 They are Roman historians, 00:01:09.76\00:01:11.37 have nothing to do with Jewish race. 00:01:11.40\00:01:13.60 They said there was a firm persuasion 00:01:13.64\00:01:16.47 that at this very time, the East was to grow 00:01:16.50\00:01:20.38 powerful and the rulers coming from Judea were 00:01:20.41\00:01:23.81 to acquire universal empire. 00:01:23.85\00:01:26.08 Suetonius, there had spread over all the Orient an old 00:01:26.11\00:01:31.45 and established belief, it was faith at that time 00:01:31.49\00:01:34.56 for men coming from Judaea to rule the world. 00:01:34.59\00:01:37.76 Scripture elsewhere it says, in the fullness of time, 00:01:37.79\00:01:40.16 that's the right time there is an expectation. 00:01:40.20\00:01:42.20 Believe me, notice of the coming of the Messiah 00:01:42.23\00:01:46.50 was not to just confine to Judea. 00:01:46.53\00:01:48.80 The Romans were very much familiar, through out 00:01:48.84\00:01:51.71 the Roman Empire they were very much familiar 00:01:51.74\00:01:54.31 about what the Jewish people were expecting to come 00:01:54.34\00:01:57.48 to come there and to happen in Judea. 00:01:57.51\00:01:59.91 There's an expectancy, there is a hope. 00:01:59.95\00:02:02.08 Yeah, So these magi, they saw the star, 00:02:02.12\00:02:06.55 but they saw did also the Hebrew Scriptures. 00:02:06.59\00:02:11.43 May I just pause there for a moment, because, 00:02:11.46\00:02:14.00 usually we're so familiar with the Christians, 00:02:14.00\00:02:16.87 Christmas story because of the pageants we see 00:02:16.90\00:02:19.23 and the shepherds and the wise men come at about 00:02:19.27\00:02:22.10 the same time. Yeah. 00:02:22.14\00:02:23.47 There's a difference in time there. 00:02:23.51\00:02:25.74 Actually we must say that, between verse 25 of 00:02:25.77\00:02:30.98 Chapter 1 and what happens in Chapter 2 probably weeks, 00:02:31.01\00:02:35.75 it could be even month that they passed. 00:02:35.78\00:02:38.22 How do you know that? Probably viewers 00:02:38.25\00:02:40.26 would like to know that. 00:02:40.29\00:02:41.62 Number one is we read when the magis 00:02:41.66\00:02:45.43 they came there to Bethlehem, where did they 00:02:45.46\00:02:47.96 find Joseph and Mary? Not in a stable. 00:02:48.00\00:02:51.97 They found in a house, but in Gospel of Luke, Jesus 00:02:52.00\00:02:54.80 was not born in a house, He was born in the stable. 00:02:54.84\00:02:57.44 So evidently by that time, Joseph and Mary, 00:02:57.47\00:02:59.81 moved to a house where they lived. 00:02:59.84\00:03:01.74 And they came because they had seen the star. 00:03:01.78\00:03:04.21 It would take sometime to come to travel 00:03:04.25\00:03:06.75 Second thing is, in the conclusion of Chapter 2, 00:03:06.78\00:03:09.35 when Herod found out from magis about 00:03:09.38\00:03:14.79 the birth of the new king, he decided to kill 00:03:14.82\00:03:18.89 all children up to two years of age. 00:03:18.93\00:03:20.96 Why up to two years of age? He knew that the child was 00:03:21.00\00:03:24.43 born just few days before or may be week. 00:03:24.47\00:03:28.27 Because it said everyone week or two 00:03:28.30\00:03:29.64 Or may be that night that the boy was born. 00:03:29.67\00:03:32.61 Why would he kill all those children up to 00:03:32.64\00:03:34.81 two years of age? But second thing is 00:03:34.84\00:03:36.88 in Gospel of Luke, when Joseph and Mary came there 00:03:36.91\00:03:41.12 to Jerusalem with Jesus, they were so poor, 00:03:41.15\00:03:45.99 they could not offer a lamb there as a sacrifice. 00:03:46.02\00:03:49.92 They, you know, as a poor people 00:03:49.96\00:03:51.63 they were two births there. 00:03:51.66\00:03:53.73 If really the magi they came prior to that, 00:03:53.76\00:03:57.83 they would be very rich people with those gifts. 00:03:57.87\00:04:00.50 So evidently all the evidences that 00:04:00.54\00:04:02.94 indicate to us that the magi came 00:04:02.97\00:04:05.41 may be weeks after that. 00:04:05.44\00:04:07.11 Again we see God's mercy, Jesus has come, 00:04:07.14\00:04:10.45 the shepherds have responded. 00:04:10.48\00:04:12.51 You'd think the nation would be responding. 00:04:12.55\00:04:15.42 Do we see a nation that's so glad their hope 00:04:15.45\00:04:18.05 is finally fulfilled? The people are curious 00:04:18.09\00:04:21.02 and they are rushing to learn more. 00:04:21.06\00:04:22.56 So can you imagine the Messiah was born. 00:04:22.59\00:04:25.59 His people were waiting for His coming. 00:04:25.63\00:04:29.76 He came to save them from their sins 00:04:29.80\00:04:32.07 and nobody was waiting for Him. 00:04:32.10\00:04:35.10 Who were those in the Gospel of Matthew that 00:04:35.14\00:04:37.34 were waiting for him, actually the Gentiles, 00:04:37.37\00:04:40.24 not only that they waited, that they were in Jerusalem, 00:04:40.28\00:04:43.21 they have to travel several weeks from Mesopotamia 00:04:43.24\00:04:46.72 to come there to welcome the new born king. 00:04:46.75\00:04:50.35 When the seekers come, they come to Jerusalem, 00:04:50.39\00:04:53.02 who did they see and what did they find out? 00:04:53.05\00:04:54.89 Yeah, they saw the Scribes, they saw the people 00:04:54.92\00:04:57.36 but they saw such a great in difference. 00:04:57.39\00:04:59.46 I want just go back to what you said last time, 00:04:59.49\00:05:02.03 the people with genealogy. 00:05:02.06\00:05:03.40 They go to those people with genealogy. 00:05:03.43\00:05:05.97 Yes, He came to save them. 00:05:06.00\00:05:07.34 Now did the Priests and Rabbis have the facts, 00:05:07.37\00:05:10.54 did they have the truth, did they have the knowledge? 00:05:10.57\00:05:12.67 Yes, actually when the question was, 00:05:12.71\00:05:17.35 where will the Messiah be born? 00:05:17.38\00:05:20.48 They said in Bethlehem. They knew it. 00:05:20.52\00:05:23.35 Actually we have all the evidences that 00:05:23.39\00:05:25.25 the Jewish people based from Daniel Chapter 9, 00:05:25.29\00:05:28.02 they knew approximate the time 00:05:28.06\00:05:30.03 when the Messiah would be born. 00:05:30.06\00:05:31.53 Can you ever think but they were not waiting for Him. 00:05:31.56\00:05:33.96 There is a warning for us, isn't it? 00:05:34.00\00:05:35.43 Oh yeah. I'm so many times afraid 00:05:35.46\00:05:38.77 when we started the Bible, we know 00:05:38.80\00:05:40.94 what the future will bring. 00:05:40.97\00:05:42.30 I'm afraid that the future can happen, 00:05:42.34\00:05:44.64 but it will not fit to my expectations. 00:05:44.67\00:05:48.18 How it's important to study the Bible as it is, 00:05:48.21\00:05:51.41 not study and bring our ideas and our concepts-- 00:05:51.45\00:05:55.05 So we can know the signs and we can know the prophecies, 00:05:55.08\00:05:58.72 but still miss the Savior. Yes. 00:05:58.75\00:06:01.46 What a tragic experience? Now, 00:06:01.49\00:06:05.06 of course Herod, gets involved in the process. 00:06:05.09\00:06:06.93 What's his concern? He is a king, 00:06:06.96\00:06:09.40 what does he care about a baby being born? 00:06:09.43\00:06:10.97 You know, the readers who lived there 00:06:11.00\00:06:13.84 in the first century, when they read all 00:06:13.87\00:06:21.01 these account of Jesus birth, 00:06:21.04\00:06:22.84 they couldn't escape something, because 00:06:22.88\00:06:25.01 Josephus who was Jewish historian, 00:06:25.05\00:06:29.45 but he became later Romans. 00:06:29.48\00:06:31.95 Actually he described that before Moses was born 00:06:31.99\00:06:36.93 that the magi they said to Pharaoh, you know, that 00:06:36.96\00:06:42.56 a leader will come and He will take your throne, 00:06:42.60\00:06:46.03 He will be threat to you and according to 00:06:46.07\00:06:48.40 the Jewish rendition is Pharaoh wanted to 00:06:48.44\00:06:50.91 kill Moses, because he was threat to his throne. 00:06:50.94\00:06:54.18 The same situation is here. 00:06:54.21\00:06:56.31 Herod was much more concerned about his throne. 00:06:56.34\00:07:00.25 Probably few words should be said about Herod. 00:07:00.28\00:07:04.59 We know that he killed his wife, his beloved wife, 00:07:04.62\00:07:09.79 that he was obsessed with her beauty 00:07:09.82\00:07:11.76 and so he killed her. 00:07:11.79\00:07:13.13 He killed his two favorite sons. 00:07:13.16\00:07:15.13 For Herod to kill several innocent children 00:07:15.16\00:07:19.87 there in Bethlehem was nothing strange, 00:07:19.90\00:07:22.67 simply to preserve his rule, his rule on the throne. 00:07:22.70\00:07:28.04 Actually the history is telling us 00:07:28.08\00:07:30.08 before Herod died, you know, that he gathered, 00:07:30.11\00:07:33.15 he assembled, all the Jewish leaders, 00:07:33.18\00:07:35.98 he put them in jail, put them on side, 00:07:36.02\00:07:37.89 and he said the moment you hear that I died 00:07:37.92\00:07:41.92 I want to kill everybody there, 00:07:41.96\00:07:43.76 crying in the country, otherwise people will 00:07:43.79\00:07:46.46 not cry when I die. 00:07:46.49\00:07:47.83 See it fits his character what he was doing 00:07:47.86\00:07:50.67 there with reference to Jesus. 00:07:50.70\00:07:52.03 I understand, there's even a saying that 00:07:52.07\00:07:53.44 "It is safer to be his dog than his family member" 00:07:53.47\00:07:56.10 because if you are a rival, he will eliminate you. 00:07:56.14\00:07:59.41 So we have here in Chapter 2, 00:07:59.44\00:08:01.21 who is the true king of Israel, 00:08:01.24\00:08:03.18 isn't that the question? 00:08:03.21\00:08:04.55 Yes. Who is the king? 00:08:04.58\00:08:05.91 Is it Herod or does God have someone else? 00:08:05.95\00:08:08.05 No, actually Herod is here as upper of God's authority. 00:08:08.08\00:08:12.52 He is the one that Satan is using to prevent God's plan, 00:08:12.55\00:08:15.89 to accomplish God's purposes on earth. 00:08:15.92\00:08:20.36 Now, Herod was very crafty about what he does. 00:08:20.40\00:08:22.90 He doesn't reveal his motivation. 00:08:22.93\00:08:26.53 He says to the wise men, 00:08:26.57\00:08:27.90 oh I want to worship him too. 00:08:27.94\00:08:29.27 But you know, there is something 00:08:29.30\00:08:33.04 so beautiful here that I cannot but to mention it, 00:08:33.07\00:08:37.01 so many times when we, situation in the world, 00:08:37.05\00:08:40.98 we wonder if God is still in control. 00:08:41.02\00:08:45.42 When we see here what's going on, 00:08:45.45\00:08:46.96 the Messiah is born and now 00:08:46.99\00:08:49.99 there is a threat to his life, even had 00:08:50.03\00:08:52.09 to flee there to Egypt. Where is God? 00:08:52.13\00:08:56.33 But believe me God is still in charge, 00:08:56.36\00:09:00.04 God is still in control. 00:09:00.07\00:09:02.44 According to Matthew, even Jesus had to 00:09:02.47\00:09:05.17 flee there to Egypt, it was 00:09:05.21\00:09:06.81 for the prophecy to be fulfilled. 00:09:06.84\00:09:08.28 Could we spend a moment, you mentioned earlier about 00:09:08.31\00:09:11.31 the gifts that these wise men bring 00:09:11.35\00:09:14.82 and we say three kings, but we don't know the number, 00:09:14.85\00:09:17.32 that's part of our stories that have developed. 00:09:17.35\00:09:19.52 But they do bring three gifts, what are they? 00:09:19.55\00:09:22.56 What could they have been used for? 00:09:22.59\00:09:24.06 How are they helpful? 00:09:24.09\00:09:25.43 Actually they were very expensive gifts and 00:09:25.46\00:09:29.70 people are trying to make different theories of gold, 00:09:29.73\00:09:34.27 frankincense and myrrh etc. 00:09:34.30\00:09:36.67 I really don't want to go with that, 00:09:36.71\00:09:38.64 sometimes it can be very, very speculative, 00:09:38.67\00:09:41.94 but really those three gifts can refer to the threefold 00:09:41.98\00:09:46.15 aspect of Jesus ministry in the office. 00:09:46.18\00:09:48.88 He's the king, He's the priest and He' a judge. 00:09:48.92\00:09:52.52 And it shows how God provides because of those 00:09:52.55\00:09:54.66 gifts become the means for them to escape to Egypt. 00:09:54.69\00:09:57.36 Can you imagine, not only the Messiah, 00:09:57.39\00:09:59.53 was not waited for in Jerusalem 00:09:59.56\00:10:02.80 by His own people, but He had to go and flee 00:10:02.83\00:10:06.30 and to find the protection in the Gentile territory 00:10:06.33\00:10:08.67 which was actually Egypt today. 00:10:08.70\00:10:10.67 What Jesus' say, but God made a provision 00:10:10.71\00:10:13.54 with the gifts of those magi, so that 00:10:13.58\00:10:17.25 Joseph and Mary could for certain period of time 00:10:17.28\00:10:20.18 live there in Egypt, in order to survive? 00:10:20.22\00:10:23.92 How God always makes provision. 00:10:23.95\00:10:26.19 I suspected you'll bring this out in future lessons 00:10:26.22\00:10:29.42 about how Jesus repeats some of the history of Israel 00:10:29.46\00:10:32.63 and correlation between those two. 00:10:32.66\00:10:35.43 Actually I would like to take one minute 00:10:35.46\00:10:37.10 to address it, because we have it here 00:10:37.13\00:10:40.40 the significance of the Old Testament 00:10:40.44\00:10:42.30 quotations in Matthew 2. 00:10:42.34\00:10:43.97 Just quickly Matthew 2:15, what do we have at 2:15. 00:10:44.01\00:10:48.98 Yes and there was. 00:10:49.01\00:10:50.75 Out of Egypt I called my son. 00:10:50.78\00:10:54.18 Then we have in 2:6, we have you, 00:10:54.22\00:10:58.65 Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, 00:10:58.69\00:11:00.29 who are not the least among the leaders of Judah, 00:11:00.32\00:11:03.63 For out of you shall come forth 00:11:03.66\00:11:05.59 a ruler who will shepherd My people Israel. 00:11:05.63\00:11:09.46 And then in verse 2:18, a voice from 00:11:09.50\00:11:12.63 Jeremiah prophecy, A voice was heard in Ramah, 00:11:12.67\00:11:16.10 weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping 00:11:16.14\00:11:18.81 for her children and she refused to be 00:11:18.84\00:11:21.31 comforted because they were no more. 00:11:21.34\00:11:23.51 By the way we know that all these are three quotations 00:11:23.55\00:11:26.88 from the Old Testament and they refer 00:11:26.92\00:11:29.18 to three greatest events in history. 00:11:29.22\00:11:33.52 Matthew 2:15 is quotation from Hosea 11:1 00:11:33.56\00:11:37.59 it refers to Exodus. 00:11:37.63\00:11:38.96 Then we have Matthew 2:6 from Micah 5:2, 00:11:38.99\00:11:43.47 it refers to the kingdom of David. 00:11:43.50\00:11:45.57 You know Bethlehem David was born. 00:11:45.60\00:11:47.17 Then we have Matthew 2:18 is quotation 00:11:47.20\00:11:50.64 from Jeremiah 31:15 its reference to the Exile. 00:11:50.67\00:11:55.04 So what is the point that we have here, 00:11:55.08\00:11:57.11 you know, Jesus came to save His people 00:11:57.15\00:12:00.22 from their sins. How? 00:12:00.25\00:12:01.58 Because he identifies Himself with them. 00:12:01.62\00:12:06.49 We saw the genealogy, the history of God's people 00:12:06.52\00:12:10.46 in the past was the history of constant failure. 00:12:10.49\00:12:13.83 But Jesus, in order to save them, 00:12:13.86\00:12:15.83 He steps into the situation where they failed, 00:12:15.86\00:12:19.23 He won the victory and that's the way 00:12:19.27\00:12:21.97 how He came to save His people from their sins. 00:12:22.00\00:12:25.54 As we conclude what should we hold on to 00:12:25.57\00:12:29.11 from this story of the birth of Jesus? 00:12:29.14\00:12:31.21 What does this say to you and to me as readers today? 00:12:31.25\00:12:35.42 So today, when we read the Gospel of Matthew, 00:12:35.45\00:12:40.46 we can learn something yes. 00:12:40.49\00:12:42.09 We saw that the Gospel of Matthew began 00:12:42.12\00:12:44.53 with rejection of Jesus by His own people 00:12:44.56\00:12:48.93 that actually He came to save. 00:12:48.96\00:12:52.17 What is that hope for me 00:12:52.20\00:12:54.47 as I read the Gospel of Matthew? 00:12:54.50\00:12:57.17 So many times I feel in my life I have constant 00:12:57.21\00:12:59.87 rejection of Jesus, but He still loves me 00:12:59.91\00:13:02.24 and He loves His own people in the past and He's ready 00:13:02.28\00:13:04.91 to save me from my own sin. What a Savior. 00:13:04.95\00:13:08.35
