Welcome back, we're exploring the genealogy of Jesus, 00:00:01.33\00:00:04.20 found in Matthew Chapter 1. 00:00:04.23\00:00:06.20 Ranko, let's go back into this a little bit further. 00:00:06.23\00:00:09.14 What else do we need to know about this genealogy, 00:00:09.17\00:00:11.17 in terms of its background, this was-- 00:00:11.21\00:00:13.78 these Old Testament echoes, that you mentioned? 00:00:13.81\00:00:15.64 Tell us little more about that. 00:00:15.68\00:00:17.11 If the intention of the Holy Spirit, 00:00:17.15\00:00:20.22 who inspired Matthew to begin His Gospel of genealogy 00:00:20.25\00:00:24.89 and put it at the very beginning, 00:00:24.92\00:00:26.49 you know, you put at the very beginning, 00:00:26.52\00:00:28.06 the things that are the most important. 00:00:28.09\00:00:30.39 That sets the tone, for the rest of the book. 00:00:30.43\00:00:34.23 Then, we really have to go to the Old Testament, 00:00:34.30\00:00:38.27 to the Book of Genesis and find out 00:00:38.30\00:00:40.94 about the meaning of genealogy, 00:00:40.97\00:00:42.47 there in order to understand the meaning of genealogy, 00:00:42.50\00:00:45.14 in Matthew Chapter 1. 00:00:45.17\00:00:46.54 So, Glenn, now you have to help me, okay. 00:00:46.57\00:00:49.18 We have in Gospel of Matthew-- 00:00:49.21\00:00:51.58 in the Book of Genesis, Chapter 1. 00:00:51.61\00:00:53.95 God created the heaven and earth, 00:00:53.98\00:00:56.35 okay, in six days, on the seventh day He rested. 00:00:56.38\00:00:59.89 And then, God wanted to establish 00:00:59.92\00:01:01.76 that working relationships with human beings. 00:01:01.79\00:01:05.59 Telling them, as long as you work with Me, 00:01:05.63\00:01:08.70 you'll be happy here in the Garden of Eden. 00:01:08.73\00:01:11.33 And then, we know sin came. 00:01:11.37\00:01:14.64 Genesis Chapter 3 and destroyed everything. 00:01:14.67\00:01:18.41 So in Chapter 2, verse 1, we have the book of genealogy. 00:01:18.44\00:01:22.28 It's the beginning with the history 00:01:22.31\00:01:23.91 of the planet earth, and God's effort to establish 00:01:23.95\00:01:27.75 the working relationships, with human beings. 00:01:27.78\00:01:30.85 Then the crush, the sin came. 00:01:30.89\00:01:34.39 Now, we know what happened as the consequences of sin. 00:01:34.42\00:01:37.79 Now we come to remember, the second reference 00:01:37.83\00:01:40.80 to the book of genealogy is chapter 5. 00:01:40.83\00:01:43.16 One is before the coming of sin, 00:01:43.20\00:01:45.20 another one after coming of sin. 00:01:45.23\00:01:47.77 You see, even though, the human beings fell into sin 00:01:47.80\00:01:52.71 and the sin according to Apostle Paul, 00:01:52.74\00:01:55.24 enter into all human beings, because all have sinned. 00:01:55.28\00:01:58.88 God wanted, still to keep the knowledge of Himself 00:01:58.91\00:02:03.72 among the human beings 00:02:03.75\00:02:05.12 and to work for their salvation. 00:02:05.15\00:02:06.59 Any idea, what is the method 00:02:06.62\00:02:08.82 that God used in order to do it? 00:02:08.86\00:02:11.56 So you're saying, He hasn't given up on them? No. 00:02:11.59\00:02:13.93 He is still reaching out, He is working to intervene? 00:02:13.96\00:02:16.70 How? Okay. 00:02:16.73\00:02:18.10 By means of genealogy. 00:02:18.13\00:02:20.40 In Genesis 5:1, He says, 00:02:20.44\00:02:23.84 now this is the beginning-- this is the book of genealogy, 00:02:23.87\00:02:28.31 genealogy of Adam. 00:02:28.34\00:02:30.11 See, God had genealogy, let's explain genealogy. 00:02:30.15\00:02:33.25 It means God has a lineage of His faithful people, 00:02:33.28\00:02:38.55 throughout history, who were faithful to Him. 00:02:38.59\00:02:42.19 And it is through those people, 00:02:42.22\00:02:43.59 through that genealogy, Adam's genealogy, 00:02:43.63\00:02:46.16 that God wanted to preserve 00:02:46.19\00:02:47.73 the knowledge of Himself 00:02:47.76\00:02:49.13 to work for the salvation of human beings. 00:02:49.16\00:02:52.17 See, God did not leave 00:02:52.20\00:02:53.57 the human beings alone, but then what happened? 00:02:53.60\00:02:55.67 So He works through this family tree 00:02:55.70\00:02:57.54 to preserve the knowledge of the truth, okay. 00:02:57.57\00:03:00.28 But then we have, Satan was doing very similar. 00:03:00.31\00:03:03.55 He made the counterfeit genealogy. 00:03:03.58\00:03:05.48 We have that evil genealogy, the genealogy of Cain. Cain. 00:03:05.51\00:03:09.68 Tell me, which genealogy succeeded? 00:03:09.72\00:03:13.62 Well, we certainly see this coming 00:03:13.66\00:03:16.79 all the way down to the time of Jesus. 00:03:16.83\00:03:18.56 No. Actually the flood came, 00:03:18.59\00:03:21.80 have they seen the genealogy, 00:03:21.83\00:03:23.90 finally concluded with the flood. 00:03:23.93\00:03:26.50 Only Noah and his family stayed faithful, 00:03:26.53\00:03:29.47 but the entire earth became corrupted. 00:03:29.50\00:03:31.87 So the flood came and brought 00:03:31.91\00:03:33.91 the end of the generation of the-- 00:03:33.94\00:03:35.94 So God's family tree. 00:03:35.98\00:03:37.88 What does God do after the flood? 00:03:37.91\00:03:42.02 We have the new, the beginning of a new genealogy, 00:03:42.05\00:03:46.55 the genealogy of Noah. 00:03:46.59\00:03:49.02 So the same purpose, the same reason 00:03:49.06\00:03:51.73 but at the same time, Satan, 00:03:51.76\00:03:53.23 creates his own genealogy, the new genealogy 00:03:53.26\00:03:56.33 that try to do something at the Tower of Babel. 00:03:56.36\00:04:00.07 Yeah. To make the name beings, 00:04:00.10\00:04:01.80 to prevent God's plan, that he wanted 00:04:01.84\00:04:03.67 to accomplish through his genealogy. 00:04:03.71\00:04:05.97 And finally, we have that God's plan 00:04:06.01\00:04:08.01 almost failed with the Tower of Babel. 00:04:08.04\00:04:11.85 Then, we have God makes the beginning 00:04:11.88\00:04:14.82 of a new genealogy of Abraham. 00:04:14.85\00:04:17.39 Telling him that, through your offspring, 00:04:17.42\00:04:20.16 through your genealogy, 00:04:20.19\00:04:21.56 all the people of the earth will be blessed. 00:04:21.59\00:04:25.73 It is through Abraham, that we have the beginning 00:04:25.76\00:04:27.86 of that Old Testament genealogy, 00:04:27.93\00:04:29.76 that we call the people of Israel. 00:04:29.80\00:04:33.07 What can we say, Glenn, about that genealogy? 00:04:33.10\00:04:35.44 And for the Hebrews, for the Jews, 00:04:35.47\00:04:37.11 this would have been the most important one. 00:04:37.14\00:04:39.07 But that genealogy, was the history, 00:04:39.11\00:04:42.01 of a constant failure. 00:04:42.04\00:04:45.25 Failures, repeatedly. 00:04:45.28\00:04:46.65 Which actually concluded with the Babylonian exile. 00:04:46.68\00:04:50.82 So now, what is the purpose of this Matthew genealogy? 00:04:50.85\00:04:54.96 So can my genealogy save me, 00:04:54.99\00:04:57.09 can my family tree make all the difference, Ranko? 00:04:57.13\00:04:59.96 Matthew want to tell his readers, his, his readers, 00:05:00.06\00:05:03.93 is that it is through that genealogy. 00:05:03.97\00:05:07.67 And, can I say, out of that genealogy, 00:05:07.70\00:05:10.74 Jesus Christ came. 00:05:10.77\00:05:12.67 And he says, this is the book of genealogy 00:05:12.71\00:05:15.41 of Jesus Christ came. 00:05:15.44\00:05:18.65 He came out of that genealogy. 00:05:18.68\00:05:20.32 So the coming of Jesus is actually the climax 00:05:20.35\00:05:24.79 of that Old Testament genealogies. 00:05:24.82\00:05:29.59 Now, as you ask that question is, 00:05:29.62\00:05:32.73 what this the concluding text 00:05:32.76\00:05:36.56 of the genealogy in Matthew Chapter 1. 00:05:36.60\00:05:39.90 Actually the Bible student recognize, 00:05:39.93\00:05:42.67 that actually its verse 21, functions as the conclusion 00:05:42.70\00:05:47.24 and as the climax of this genealogy 00:05:47.28\00:05:50.51 in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:05:50.55\00:05:51.91 Can you just read? 00:05:51.95\00:05:53.31 All that family tree leads us down to Mathew 1:21. 00:05:53.35\00:05:56.85 "And she shall bring forth a son, 00:05:56.89\00:06:00.19 and you shall call his name Jesus, 00:06:00.22\00:06:02.59 for he will save his people from their sins." 00:06:02.62\00:06:04.43 Sin, so you see-- 00:06:04.46\00:06:05.83 That's the hope, that's the common end-- 00:06:05.86\00:06:07.23 So, you see, Jesus is the last one 00:06:07.23\00:06:10.53 in that list of genealogy. 00:06:10.57\00:06:13.20 I would like you Glenn, to pay something 00:06:13.23\00:06:15.64 very, very important is, its verse 16. 00:06:15.67\00:06:18.91 Usually, we don't pay too much attention to this, 00:06:18.94\00:06:22.54 if we go from verse two, what do we see? 00:06:22.58\00:06:25.98 "Abraham bore Isaac, Isaac bore Jacob, 00:06:26.01\00:06:29.62 Jacob bore Judah" and this is what the entire genealogy. 00:06:29.65\00:06:32.75 It shows that something, those individuals, 00:06:32.79\00:06:36.52 they have to do something with the next, 00:06:36.56\00:06:39.63 with the descendants who came after them. 00:06:39.66\00:06:41.80 They came, because they bore them. 00:06:41.83\00:06:43.90 But when we come to verse 16, it says, 00:06:43.93\00:06:46.70 "Jacob bore Joseph, the husband of Mary, 00:06:46.74\00:06:52.24 by whom Jesus was born, 00:06:52.27\00:06:56.38 who is called the Messiah Christ." 00:06:56.41\00:06:58.25 So now, a careful reader will notice, wait, 00:06:58.28\00:07:00.75 there's a shift, something's happening. 00:07:00.78\00:07:03.05 So what is the shift? 00:07:03.08\00:07:04.45 You see, before you have all this active verb, 00:07:04.49\00:07:07.69 Abraham bore, Isaac bore, 00:07:07.72\00:07:09.59 David bore but Joseph had nothing 00:07:09.62\00:07:12.36 to do with the birth of Jesus. 00:07:12.39\00:07:15.13 Joseph did not bare Jesus. 00:07:15.16\00:07:18.50 And, we'll see in the next program 00:07:18.53\00:07:19.90 about the birth of Jesus. About the birth of Jesus. 00:07:19.93\00:07:21.30 But, this is a great miracle. 00:07:21.34\00:07:23.87 Because Mary became pregnant, because of the Holy Spirit, 00:07:23.91\00:07:27.24 not because of the sexual relationships with Joseph. 00:07:27.28\00:07:31.18 So really Jesus came out of that genealogy, 00:07:31.21\00:07:36.55 but he is not out of the genealogy, 00:07:36.58\00:07:39.75 does it make sense? 00:07:39.79\00:07:41.16 Yes, it does. 00:07:41.19\00:07:42.56 And I do wanna ask you here, 00:07:42.59\00:07:43.96 just very briefly, Ranko. 00:07:43.99\00:07:45.36 Verse 17, it talks about these generations, 00:07:45.39\00:07:47.96 it says that there were 14 from Abraham to David, 00:07:47.96\00:07:51.23 14 from David to captivity, 00:07:51.27\00:07:53.27 and 14 from the captivity to Christ. 00:07:53.30\00:07:55.74 There is a structure here. 00:07:55.77\00:07:57.14 Yes. Actually the Holy Spirit through Matthew 00:07:57.17\00:08:02.61 makes periodization of history. 00:08:02.64\00:08:05.05 We have three periods, but you know, 00:08:05.08\00:08:07.08 to make it you had to take few Israelite kings out. 00:08:07.12\00:08:10.29 Okay, evidently, this is theological purpose, 00:08:10.32\00:08:13.52 not really the purpose of genealogy. 00:08:13.56\00:08:16.16 And the Bible students have been always 00:08:16.19\00:08:18.03 struggling with meaning of that. 00:08:18.06\00:08:20.00 What is the purpose of this 14, 14, 14? 00:08:20.03\00:08:23.90 And there is only one satisfactory solution, 00:08:23.93\00:08:26.33 is because it's the key name here is David. 00:08:26.37\00:08:31.37 And we know that, in Hebrew, 00:08:31.41\00:08:34.24 the name of David consists of those three consonants. 00:08:34.28\00:08:38.18 D.V.D. in Hebrew alphabet this is four, 00:08:38.21\00:08:43.59 this is four. Four plus four, it's eight. 00:08:43.62\00:08:47.19 And the middle one V is actually six, 00:08:47.22\00:08:50.36 so you have the number, 14. 00:08:50.39\00:08:51.76 So, the number 14 in three groups, 00:08:51.79\00:08:53.33 and three letters in the name. 00:08:53.36\00:08:54.73 Because in the Gospel of Matthew, 00:08:54.73\00:08:56.10 the name of David is very significant. 00:08:56.13\00:08:58.00 Jesus is always the son of David. 00:08:58.03\00:09:00.07 He is the king sitting on the throne of David. 00:09:00.10\00:09:04.17 So, they need to show that in Jesus Christ, 00:09:04.21\00:09:06.54 all those Jewish expectations, of the son of David, 00:09:06.57\00:09:10.45 who'll come in the reigning justice actually was fulfilled. 00:09:10.48\00:09:13.75 And you see what a story? 00:09:13.78\00:09:15.15 Here you go from, from the great king David, 00:09:15.18\00:09:19.09 down to the captivity of the Babylon. 00:09:19.12\00:09:21.66 And what a disappoint from Abraham 00:09:21.69\00:09:23.46 to David, all the hope. 00:09:23.49\00:09:25.53 Now, the hope is destroyed into captivity and then, 00:09:25.56\00:09:29.06 the last one brings you to Jesus. 00:09:29.10\00:09:31.10 So, did you notice in verse 21, 00:09:31.13\00:09:33.57 "His name will be Jesus", 00:09:33.60\00:09:35.54 which is actually the Hebrew name Yeshua. 00:09:35.57\00:09:40.64 And Yeshua means "Yahweh saves". 00:09:40.68\00:09:44.08 So, His name is supposed to be Yeshua, 00:09:44.11\00:09:47.02 Jesus which means, "He will save 00:09:47.05\00:09:50.59 His people from their sins". 00:09:50.62\00:09:53.05 You know, the question is, why genealogy? 00:09:53.09\00:09:59.53 Is genealogy important? 00:09:59.56\00:10:02.10 According to the Old Testament, it is important. 00:10:02.13\00:10:05.77 Unfortunately, in the Old Testament times, 00:10:05.80\00:10:08.30 people made genealogy to be a means of salvation. 00:10:08.34\00:10:11.71 Ranko, I'm gonna wrap this up quickly, 00:10:11.74\00:10:13.41 but it's moving to the point of this, 00:10:13.44\00:10:15.81 of--what if I say my family tree's a mess, 00:10:15.84\00:10:19.68 this world's a mess? 00:10:19.71\00:10:21.08 How does this, what does this teach me? 00:10:21.12\00:10:22.75 You see, genealogy is not an excuse for what I am. 00:10:22.78\00:10:27.42 What genealogy cannot do for us? 00:10:27.46\00:10:29.39 By the way, when we read the genealogy, 00:10:29.42\00:10:31.73 I'd like to invite viewers to open the Gospel of Matthew. 00:10:31.76\00:10:35.50 And God name after the name, 00:10:35.53\00:10:37.53 and to go to the Old Testament time, 00:10:37.57\00:10:39.40 and you will see that each one of these names, 00:10:39.43\00:10:42.97 has the history, the history of struggle, 00:10:43.00\00:10:45.84 a history of falling into sin. 00:10:45.87\00:10:48.88 Each one of these names, 00:10:48.91\00:10:51.15 really there is something attached to their name. 00:10:51.18\00:10:54.62 That really asks us this question, 00:10:54.65\00:10:56.42 what kind of genealogy is this? 00:10:56.45\00:10:59.82 But, I just want to tell you, 00:10:59.85\00:11:01.39 genealogy cannot save anybody. 00:11:01.42\00:11:04.93 Actually, the key text, Matthew 1:21, 00:11:04.96\00:11:07.36 is to tell us, that His name is Jesus, 00:11:07.40\00:11:11.50 because, what genealogy could not do, okay. 00:11:11.53\00:11:15.60 He came to save, His people from their sins. 00:11:15.64\00:11:21.54 One more time, He came to save 00:11:21.58\00:11:24.75 His people from their sins. 00:11:24.78\00:11:27.95 Which people? The people that are here, 00:11:27.98\00:11:30.45 in the genealogy, Jesus came to save, 00:11:30.49\00:11:34.36 you see, David and Bathsheba-- 00:11:34.39\00:11:36.12 So, you're saying if Jesus came 00:11:36.16\00:11:38.63 to save people like Tamar, 00:11:38.66\00:11:41.13 if Jesus came to save someone like Rahab? 00:11:41.16\00:11:43.40 David, Solomon, Rahab. 00:11:43.43\00:11:45.27 A prostitute, David a murderer and adulterer, 00:11:45.30\00:11:48.44 if He came to save those-- 00:11:48.47\00:11:50.64 He can save me. He can save me. 00:11:50.67\00:11:52.07 Yes. So Jesus came to save His people. 00:11:52.11\00:11:56.31 We are a part of His people. 00:11:56.34\00:11:57.91 Friends, we need genealogy. 00:11:57.95\00:12:00.05 We need to belong. 00:12:00.08\00:12:01.45 God has always, His genealogy, His people. 00:12:01.48\00:12:05.19 It is through His people, God wants to proclaim 00:12:05.22\00:12:08.26 the knowledge of Himself, that everlasting gospel. 00:12:08.29\00:12:11.59 Today, God has His genealogy 00:12:11.63\00:12:13.43 and He would like, through His people, 00:12:13.46\00:12:15.70 to proclaim the message of Jesus Christ. 00:12:15.73\00:12:18.83 That Jesus Christ is coming very, very soon. 00:12:18.87\00:12:22.27 We need the genealogy, but we have to understand, 00:12:22.30\00:12:25.41 that genealogy cannot save us. 00:12:25.44\00:12:27.58 We need Jesus Christ, because He is the only one, 00:12:27.61\00:12:32.08 who is able to save people from their sins. 00:12:32.11\00:12:36.42 And this is that great message. 00:12:36.45\00:12:38.35 This is the great comfort that comes 00:12:38.39\00:12:40.72 to me from the Gospel of Matthew. 00:12:40.76\00:12:42.49 Now, we see why Matthew under the inspiration 00:12:42.52\00:12:45.73 of the Holy Spirit, he begins his book 00:12:45.76\00:12:48.53 with genealogy to tell us, that what human beings, 00:12:48.56\00:12:52.73 they cannot do for my salvation, 00:12:52.77\00:12:54.54 what I, cannot do for my salvation. 00:12:54.57\00:12:57.31 Our hope is only in the one, whose name is Jesus, 00:12:57.34\00:13:02.28 because He is the one who can save 00:13:02.31\00:13:06.01 His people, from their sins. 00:13:06.05\00:13:08.28 So I would like to tell the viewers, 00:13:08.32\00:13:10.85 if you are in despair. If you are fighting 00:13:10.89\00:13:14.26 with the issues of your life. 00:13:14.29\00:13:15.92 If you think that you cannot do anything 00:13:15.96\00:13:17.73 for our self and for our salvation. 00:13:17.76\00:13:19.49 The hope is only in Him, 00:13:19.53\00:13:21.53 who can save His people from their sins. 00:13:21.56\00:13:24.00
