Hi, I'm Glenn Russell your host. 00:00:22.38\00:00:24.19 Welcome to our 'Books of the Book' series. 00:00:24.22\00:00:26.35 This one is the special exploration 00:00:26.39\00:00:28.89 of the Gospel of Matthew. 00:00:28.92\00:00:31.46 It's a wonderful thing to be able 00:00:31.49\00:00:32.86 to spend time digging into God's word 00:00:32.89\00:00:35.66 Thats what we are doing in this series. 00:00:35.70\00:00:37.83 We are exploring the Book of Matthew 00:00:37.87\00:00:39.73 with our guest teacher Dr. Ranko Stefanovic. 00:00:39.77\00:00:42.47 As we explore that word, we're gonna find out 00:00:42.50\00:00:44.61 that the more we learn about how it's written, 00:00:44.64\00:00:46.61 who its written to, the more we can appreciate 00:00:46.64\00:00:49.38 God's wonderful blessings here, in His word. 00:00:49.41\00:00:52.75 So let's enter into prayer, 00:00:52.78\00:00:54.28 as we ask God to guide us in our study 00:00:54.32\00:00:56.38 and discussion of His word. 00:00:56.42\00:00:57.79 Let's pray together Lord, before we turn into your word, 00:00:57.82\00:01:01.72 we ask you to--we can turn our hearts to you. 00:01:01.76\00:01:04.59 May we set aside other preoccupations, 00:01:04.63\00:01:06.80 may we set aside any distractions 00:01:06.83\00:01:09.43 and may we just listen to Your voice 00:01:09.46\00:01:11.50 speaking to us through Your word. 00:01:11.53\00:01:13.00 In Jesus name we pray, amen. Amen. 00:01:13.03\00:01:16.37 Wanna welcome back Dr. Ranko Stefanovic. 00:01:16.40\00:01:18.67 Ranko, dear friend and colleague 00:01:18.71\00:01:20.24 at Andrew's University, 00:01:20.28\00:01:21.64 you are professor of the New Testament. 00:01:21.68\00:01:23.41 You served as a pastor, you're now seminary professor. 00:01:23.45\00:01:27.35 What is that about the scripture 00:01:27.38\00:01:28.75 that just draws your heart 00:01:28.78\00:01:30.15 and especially this Book of Matthew? 00:01:30.19\00:01:33.12 The Bible affects human lives. 00:01:33.15\00:01:37.13 You cannot read it and stay indifferent. 00:01:37.16\00:01:41.60 It changed your life? It changed my life completely. 00:01:41.63\00:01:43.50 And it continues to change and impact it. 00:01:43.53\00:01:45.67 Now we are looking at the Gospel 00:01:45.70\00:01:47.07 according to Matthew. 00:01:47.10\00:01:48.47 Last time we had little bit of an introduction, 00:01:48.50\00:01:50.54 we saw that Matthew inspired 00:01:50.57\00:01:52.94 by the Holy Spirit is writing to, 00:01:52.97\00:01:55.98 probably a predominantly Jewish audience, 00:01:56.01\00:01:58.35 although it's a timeless book. 00:01:58.38\00:02:00.68 It's appealed to every generation even does today. 00:02:00.72\00:02:03.99 And He's wanting to tell us something 00:02:04.02\00:02:06.09 about the kingdom of God, 00:02:06.12\00:02:09.09 the kingdom of Heaven rather 00:02:09.12\00:02:10.49 and a focus on Jesus as our Lord and Savior and King. 00:02:10.53\00:02:14.56 We looked at the fact 00:02:14.56\00:02:15.93 that there's five blocks of material. 00:02:15.96\00:02:18.03 That they kinda remind 00:02:18.07\00:02:19.43 the Jewish reader of the Pentateuch. 00:02:19.47\00:02:22.34 Now, when we open the book we begin reading, 00:02:22.37\00:02:25.84 I want to just read the first part of the beginning. Please. 00:02:25.87\00:02:28.34 And see if you have reaction here, 00:02:28.38\00:02:29.94 the first verse we all get into Matthew 1:1. 00:02:29.98\00:02:34.32 "The book of genealogy of Jesus Christ, 00:02:34.35\00:02:36.75 the son of David, the son of Abraham". 00:02:36.79\00:02:39.22 Now we're all with you till that part, 00:02:39.25\00:02:40.72 but then verse 2 "Abraham begat Isaac, 00:02:40.76\00:02:44.36 Isaac begat Jacob, Jacob begat Judah 00:02:44.39\00:02:47.03 and his brothers, Judah begat Phares 00:02:47.10\00:02:49.33 and Zara by Tamar, Phares begat" 00:02:49.36\00:02:51.63 right about now, people falling asleep. 00:02:51.67\00:02:55.64 What a strange way for us, 00:02:55.67\00:02:57.64 to think a beginning a book by a genealogy. 00:02:57.67\00:03:02.71 What's so important about genealogy? 00:03:02.74\00:03:04.75 Okay, I have to admit when I was a young person, 00:03:04.78\00:03:09.55 by the age 12, I have read my Bible three times through, 00:03:09.58\00:03:14.22 but I must admit there are some portions of the Bible 00:03:14.26\00:03:16.62 that I came to read I simply skip it, 00:03:16.66\00:03:20.23 and this was one of those sections the first 17 verses 00:03:20.26\00:03:23.03 I would simply skip and keep on reading. 00:03:23.06\00:03:26.80 But let me tell you something, 00:03:26.84\00:03:29.27 when you write a book like the Gospel of Matthew, 00:03:29.30\00:03:34.14 you put the most important 00:03:34.18\00:03:36.88 and the most significant things at the very beginning. 00:03:36.91\00:03:39.61 Okay, but for us genealogies aren't very important. 00:03:39.65\00:03:41.88 I know it. See, among the Jewish people, 00:03:41.92\00:03:44.99 genealogy was very important. 00:03:45.02\00:03:47.19 You know genealogies were done and kept with priest, 00:03:47.22\00:03:51.09 so people knew where they belonged especially 00:03:51.13\00:03:53.36 if the person was fit for the priestly ministry. 00:03:53.40\00:03:57.50 And there are some parts of the world today 00:03:57.53\00:03:59.10 where genealogy is very much-- much important 00:03:59.13\00:04:02.00 so that you can trace your origin where you belong to. 00:04:02.04\00:04:05.34 Infact Josephus begins his autobiography 00:04:05.37\00:04:08.04 with the genealogy to prove your purity, 00:04:08.08\00:04:10.45 your credibility, your credential. 00:04:10.48\00:04:12.75 If my great grandfather was a significant 00:04:12.78\00:04:15.38 rich person known in the world, 00:04:15.42\00:04:18.25 I would be so eager to trace my genealogy 00:04:18.29\00:04:20.62 to remind people who actually I am 00:04:20.66\00:04:23.09 and where I came from. 00:04:23.12\00:04:24.59 However, genealogy in the Gospel of Matthew 00:04:24.63\00:04:31.03 is not the real genealogy. 00:04:31.07\00:04:32.90 You suggesting there's gonna be some 00:04:32.93\00:04:34.67 fascinating things in this Genealogy. 00:04:34.70\00:04:36.44 First how does genealogy begin? 00:04:36.47\00:04:38.81 This is the Book of genealogy of Jesus Christ, 00:04:38.84\00:04:42.08 the son of David, and then you have the son of Abraham. 00:04:42.11\00:04:46.08 First David is not the son of Abraham, 00:04:46.11\00:04:48.88 the generation generations between the two. 00:04:48.92\00:04:51.65 Why the son of David, 00:04:51.69\00:04:53.22 because in the Gospel of Matthew, 00:04:53.25\00:04:55.06 Jesus is the king, who came to the earth 00:04:55.09\00:04:58.86 and it refers to that promise given to David 00:04:58.89\00:05:02.10 that God will have his offspring 00:05:02.13\00:05:04.80 who will sit on the throne of David and rule forever. 00:05:04.83\00:05:09.40 But the son of Abraham refers to the covenant promise 00:05:09.44\00:05:13.44 that God made to Abraham that through his seed, 00:05:13.48\00:05:17.38 through his offspring, all the nations 00:05:17.41\00:05:20.25 of the earth will be blessed. 00:05:20.28\00:05:22.12 So the begin of the genealogy is to tell us 00:05:22.15\00:05:25.62 that actually those promises made to David 00:05:25.65\00:05:28.32 and to Abraham are now to come to be true. 00:05:28.36\00:05:32.09 So a Jewish reader, reading this in the first century 00:05:32.13\00:05:35.13 would be amazed to see the claim from the first verse. 00:05:35.16\00:05:38.33 Jesus has the right to be a king 00:05:38.37\00:05:40.54 and He's the fulfillment of the covenant promises, 00:05:40.57\00:05:42.74 the one they will be looking forward to. 00:05:42.77\00:05:44.14 Let's keep in mind 00:05:44.17\00:05:45.54 to whom the Gospel of Matthew was originally written. 00:05:45.57\00:05:48.01 When we go to the Gospel of Luke, 00:05:48.04\00:05:49.88 Luke also has genealogy in Chapter 3, 00:05:49.91\00:05:52.71 but he does not begin with David or Abraham. 00:05:52.75\00:05:56.92 Actually he concludes he got in a reverse order, 00:05:56.95\00:05:59.65 but he concludes with Adam and the son of God, 00:05:59.69\00:06:02.66 because in the Gospel, you remember, 00:06:02.69\00:06:04.43 the Gospel of Luke was written to non Jews 00:06:04.46\00:06:06.96 so he wanted to show that Jesus 00:06:07.00\00:06:08.90 was actually a Savior of the entire humankind. 00:06:08.93\00:06:12.40 So we have an idea here that Jesus is the one 00:06:12.43\00:06:15.90 who has the right to be on the throne. Yes. 00:06:15.94\00:06:18.57 Now Matthew will spend the rest book showing 00:06:18.61\00:06:20.68 He's the different kind of king 00:06:20.71\00:06:22.04 than they expected. Yes. 00:06:22.08\00:06:23.45 And secondly, He's the covenant for fulfillment, 00:06:23.48\00:06:25.81 He's the Messiah they have been longing for, 00:06:25.85\00:06:27.58 we'll see much more of that. 00:06:27.62\00:06:28.98 What else should we notice 00:06:29.02\00:06:30.39 in the way the genealogy is structured? 00:06:30.42\00:06:31.85 Glenn, this genealogy, 00:06:31.89\00:06:34.62 the primary reason of this genealogy 00:06:34.66\00:06:37.43 is not really to trace, 00:06:37.46\00:06:40.50 that to least going up to Abraham. 00:06:40.53\00:06:43.40 How do you know that? 00:06:43.43\00:06:44.80 Because this is not an ordinary genealogy 00:06:44.83\00:06:47.74 for which reasons, you know when you have genealogies, 00:06:47.77\00:06:50.14 it's very, very important that all names 00:06:50.17\00:06:52.44 in the list are included. 00:06:52.47\00:06:54.84 However, when we read the Gospel of Matthew, 00:06:54.88\00:06:58.18 this genealogy is there're several names 00:06:58.21\00:07:01.62 that are not mentioned. 00:07:01.65\00:07:03.99 And this is usually 00:07:04.02\00:07:05.39 what the Bible students want to understand 00:07:05.42\00:07:07.42 and the question is why? 00:07:07.46\00:07:09.12 Why certain names are taken out? 00:07:09.16\00:07:12.06 But there is much more. 00:07:12.09\00:07:13.70 You will notice in this Geneo, 00:07:13.73\00:07:15.46 usually in Jewish genealogy, men they bear children. 00:07:15.50\00:07:20.87 You see, Abraham. 00:07:20.90\00:07:22.70 You're not speaking biologically? 00:07:22.74\00:07:24.24 No biologically. In geneology. 00:07:24.27\00:07:25.64 But his because its men that counts in Genealogy. 00:07:25.67\00:07:29.21 But what here unusual is, that four women 00:07:29.24\00:07:33.45 actually are mentioned, and let me give their names, 00:07:33.48\00:07:37.09 in verse 3 its Tamar. 00:07:37.12\00:07:40.06 Yes and Tamar is not usually one 00:07:40.09\00:07:43.02 that we teach our children much about. 00:07:43.06\00:07:44.43 No, no. Then in verse 5 it's Ruth, 00:07:44.46\00:07:47.60 Moabite, Tamar was Canaanite, 00:07:47.60\00:07:51.83 Rahab was Canaanite, in verse 5 as well. 00:07:51.87\00:07:55.90 And then we have something very unusual in verse 6. 00:07:55.94\00:07:59.94 There is one that is mentioned not by name, 00:08:00.04\00:08:04.55 as the wife of the one the she was-- 00:08:04.58\00:08:07.75 the woman that was the wife of Uriah Hittite. 00:08:07.78\00:08:10.35 Doesn't even say Bathsheba. 00:08:10.39\00:08:12.15 The mother of Solomon. 00:08:12.19\00:08:13.96 And usually the Bible students, 00:08:13.99\00:08:15.36 they ask the question why? 00:08:15.39\00:08:17.43 Why such a genealogy is? 00:08:17.46\00:08:19.66 There is something about these women 00:08:19.69\00:08:24.33 that we can learn. 00:08:24.37\00:08:26.77 Number one, they are all non Israelites. 00:08:26.80\00:08:30.67 So you are talking about Gentiles whose-- 00:08:30.71\00:08:33.38 were usually outside, you know, 00:08:33.41\00:08:35.21 if you gonna be priest here to prove your tree 00:08:35.24\00:08:37.18 went all the way back to Aaron 00:08:37.21\00:08:38.98 and now in Jesus genealogy you have Gentiles, non Jews. 00:08:39.01\00:08:43.79 And there is something more. How can that be possible? 00:08:43.82\00:08:45.95 All these four women they had their men 00:08:45.99\00:08:50.13 in their life prior to the one mentioned in the genealogy. 00:08:50.16\00:08:55.63 You know all those four women are the wives 00:08:55.66\00:08:58.10 of those mentioned genealogy are Israelites, 00:08:58.13\00:09:00.20 but all of them they had husband 00:09:00.24\00:09:03.17 or they were involved with a man 00:09:03.20\00:09:05.51 before the one mentioned in the genealogy. 00:09:05.54\00:09:08.31 Why is that? See this is not usual genealogy. 00:09:08.34\00:09:11.75 Its purpose is to tell us the salvation 00:09:11.78\00:09:15.38 is not limited to the Jews. 00:09:15.42\00:09:17.19 It deal with the universality of salvation 00:09:17.22\00:09:20.16 and actually he's telling us 00:09:20.19\00:09:22.49 also the scope of the salvation. 00:09:22.52\00:09:25.83 Actually Jesus came to save the sinners. 00:09:25.86\00:09:29.00 So you are saying in spite of the fact 00:09:29.03\00:09:30.60 that one is a prostitute, 00:09:30.63\00:09:32.07 one is involved with immorality, 00:09:32.10\00:09:34.84 others have other issues, still God is working. 00:09:34.87\00:09:38.54 Yeah, but there is much more. All right. 00:09:38.57\00:09:41.51 When we read this genealogy 00:09:41.54\00:09:44.75 and probably for the sake of time, 00:09:44.78\00:09:46.88 we don't have time to read all those 17 verses. 00:09:46.92\00:09:50.99 But when you read genealogy from verse one all up to 17, 00:09:51.02\00:09:54.36 that's not really Genealogy, 00:09:54.39\00:09:55.82 it's the history of the people of Israel. 00:09:55.86\00:09:59.39 Now, you--are you taking that from the structure 00:09:59.43\00:10:02.16 that it's the history of Israel? 00:10:02.20\00:10:03.60 No, it's from the very, very genealogy. 00:10:03.63\00:10:05.97 You know, in Jewish Genealogy 00:10:06.00\00:10:07.37 number one women are not mentioned, never its man. 00:10:07.40\00:10:10.54 Second one, it's only this person bore that one 00:10:10.57\00:10:15.14 and he bore another one, but we have here 00:10:15.18\00:10:17.81 certain events mentioned in genealogy. 00:10:17.85\00:10:21.15 So the events are mentioned, 00:10:21.18\00:10:23.75 so to show that actually this genealogy 00:10:23.79\00:10:26.35 is really the history of God's people 00:10:26.39\00:10:29.22 in the Old Testament times what makes 00:10:29.26\00:10:31.36 this genealogy very, very unique. 00:10:31.39\00:10:33.33 So, so Ranko, you suggest that within this family tree, 00:10:33.36\00:10:36.40 this genealogy, there's specific time period breaks, 00:10:36.43\00:10:40.80 that are telling us that through this salvation, 00:10:40.84\00:10:43.61 through this experience of history 00:10:43.64\00:10:45.31 God is working at salvation. 00:10:45.34\00:10:47.28 He will use all kinds of people. 00:10:47.31\00:10:49.88 They know that you are still asking a question 00:10:49.91\00:10:52.05 what is then the purpose of this Genealogy? 00:10:52.08\00:10:54.25 What is the genealogy all about? 00:10:54.28\00:10:56.32 Okay can we talk about that? 00:10:56.35\00:10:57.85 Let's do it. What genealogy is? 00:10:57.89\00:10:59.25 Okay, when we read today 00:10:59.29\00:11:01.52 especially when we read in English translation 00:11:01.56\00:11:04.09 it doesn't make too much sense. 00:11:04.13\00:11:06.46 I have here in my Bible the record of the genealogy, 00:11:06.49\00:11:09.93 some other Bibles they use different expressions. 00:11:09.96\00:11:14.20 New King James Bible says 00:11:14.24\00:11:16.67 'this is the book of genealogy'. 00:11:16.71\00:11:19.41 You see, so many times it doesn't mean too much to us, 00:11:19.44\00:11:25.65 but for the Christian who were of Jewish origins, 00:11:25.68\00:11:28.98 who had their Bible as the Old Testament, 00:11:29.02\00:11:31.99 that expression would bring to their mind something else. 00:11:32.02\00:11:35.96 So Glenn, I've would like you to help me. 00:11:35.99\00:11:39.56 We can open the Book of Genesis 2:4. 00:11:39.59\00:11:43.93 Okay Genesis 2:4. Genesis 2:4. 00:11:43.97\00:11:47.40 Speaking of the wise men coming? 00:11:47.44\00:11:50.01 No, no, the Book of Genesis. 00:11:50.04\00:11:51.57 Genesis 2:4 excuse me, I'm so much in Matthew. 00:11:51.61\00:11:54.38 Yeah, we have chapter 1 00:11:54.41\00:11:56.71 we have the creation of heaven 00:11:56.75\00:11:58.18 and earth in seven days. 00:11:58.21\00:12:01.35 And now in chapter 2 verse 4 we have the explanation 00:12:01.38\00:12:05.79 in detail of the creation that God did 00:12:05.82\00:12:08.32 in chapter 1, so let's read. 00:12:08.36\00:12:10.36 "This is the history of Heaven's and the Earth 00:12:10.39\00:12:12.29 when they were created and the day 00:12:12.33\00:12:14.23 that the Lord God made the Earth and the Heaven's." 00:12:14.30\00:12:17.00 I just wanted to tell you, 00:12:17.03\00:12:18.40 we have problem here with this translation is. 00:12:18.43\00:12:21.00 In Hebrew it says 'this is the book of genealogy 00:12:21.04\00:12:24.91 of the heaven and the earth'. 00:12:24.94\00:12:26.94 In Hebrew, the same is inceptal change 00:12:26.98\00:12:30.15 which is actually the Greek 00:12:30.18\00:12:31.55 translation of the Old Testament. 00:12:31.58\00:12:34.48 Can you also read chapter 5 verse 1? 00:12:34.52\00:12:36.82 Chapter 5 of Genesis and verse 1. 00:12:36.85\00:12:41.09 'This is the book of genealogy of Adam.' 00:12:41.12\00:12:44.56 So if these are the only two places 00:12:44.59\00:12:47.60 in the Old Testament when this expression is found 00:12:47.60\00:12:50.90 'This is the Book of Genealogy' 00:12:50.93\00:12:53.30 only two times in the Old Testament, 00:12:53.34\00:12:55.04 its Genesis 2:4 and Genesis 5:1. 00:12:55.07\00:12:59.04 So tell me when the first century readers 00:12:59.07\00:13:01.54 of Jewish origin when they read Matthew 1:1 00:13:01.58\00:13:06.31 This is the book of genealogy of Jesus Christ, 00:13:06.35\00:13:08.68 what could come to their mind? 00:13:08.72\00:13:10.09 The echoes of those-- 00:13:10.12\00:13:11.49 The echoes of Genesis 2:4. 00:13:11.52\00:13:12.89 So now there's a question. 00:13:12.92\00:13:14.46 If Matthew indeed use this expression 00:13:14.49\00:13:17.93 from the Old Testament and wanted to use 00:13:17.96\00:13:22.16 to communicate the message to his readers 00:13:22.20\00:13:24.87 in the language that echoes the Old Testament, 00:13:24.90\00:13:28.50 then what is the purpose of all of this? 00:13:28.54\00:13:31.94 What is the message that the Holy Spirit 00:13:31.97\00:13:34.51 through Matthew wanted to communicate 00:13:34.54\00:13:37.78 to those Christians who lived there in the first century? 00:13:37.81\00:13:40.95 You're suggesting that the message 00:13:40.98\00:13:42.35 is lot more than biology? 00:13:42.38\00:13:43.75 Yes. And we will do it in just short time. 00:13:43.79\00:13:47.19 So we have been explaining the genealogy of Jesus. 00:13:47.22\00:13:50.09 There's lots more here and we are gonna come back 00:13:50.13\00:13:51.79 to that in just a moment. 00:13:51.83\00:13:53.23 After a break here with Ranko Stefanovic 00:13:53.26\00:13:55.66 in the Book of Matthew. 00:13:55.70\00:13:57.13
