Hi, I'm Hilary Macias with the Maranatha Minute. 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.26 Twelve years after an effort in Peru 00:00:03.30\00:00:05.43 that saw nearly 100 churches and schools constructed, 00:00:05.47\00:00:08.67 Maranatha is going back. 00:00:08.70\00:00:10.81 For years, Seventh-day Adventist leadership in Peru 00:00:10.84\00:00:13.27 has been asking Maranatha to return. 00:00:13.31\00:00:15.74 The initial effort in Peru was a success 00:00:15.78\00:00:17.78 and helped to grow Adventist membership 00:00:17.81\00:00:19.41 country-wide. 00:00:19.45\00:00:20.95 With the influx of members, 00:00:20.98\00:00:22.32 there has been a new need for more places of worship. 00:00:22.35\00:00:25.32 This next effort, 00:00:25.35\00:00:26.69 Maranatha's initial plan includes 00:00:26.72\00:00:28.12 the construction of more churches. 00:00:28.16\00:00:30.43 The first project will be over Christmas 00:00:30.46\00:00:32.26 with a family project in the greater Lima area. 00:00:32.29\00:00:35.26 In 2020, a dozen volunteer groups 00:00:35.30\00:00:37.40 are already slated to work in the country. 00:00:37.43\00:00:39.93 Peru is located 00:00:39.97\00:00:41.30 on the western coast of South America 00:00:41.34\00:00:43.34 and has a fascinating cultural heritage 00:00:43.37\00:00:45.47 that makes it a great place to explore. 00:00:45.51\00:00:48.21 Check out the upcoming family project in Peru 00:00:48.24\00:00:50.85 this December, 00:00:50.88\00:00:52.21 and learn more about how you can volunteer in Peru 00:00:52.25\00:00:55.18 by going to our website at maranatha.org, 00:00:55.22\00:00:58.52 Ancient ruins, 00:01:26.72\00:01:30.35 floating villages, 00:01:30.39\00:01:34.09 rugged landscapes, and captivating cities, 00:01:34.12\00:01:40.06 Bolivia is a country of endless diversity. 00:01:40.10\00:01:45.30 Even the people reflect this. 00:01:45.33\00:01:47.50 There are nearly 12 million people 00:01:47.54\00:01:49.47 living in Bolivia representing about 00:01:49.50\00:01:51.67 three dozen indigenous groups. 00:01:51.71\00:01:56.38 You can see this 00:01:56.41\00:01:57.75 when traveling through the country, 00:01:57.78\00:01:59.41 there are variations in dress, food, language, 00:01:59.45\00:02:03.89 and even how women do their hair, 00:02:03.92\00:02:05.72 depending on the region. 00:02:05.75\00:02:08.02 When it comes to culture, 00:02:08.06\00:02:09.46 Bolivia is among the most diverse countries 00:02:09.49\00:02:11.83 in South America. 00:02:11.86\00:02:14.13 Yet this diversity ends when it comes to religion. 00:02:14.16\00:02:18.13 The majority of Bolivians are Christians. 00:02:18.17\00:02:22.14 Among the growing Christian groups 00:02:22.17\00:02:23.94 is the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:02:23.97\00:02:26.27 Bolivia was the last country in South America 00:02:26.31\00:02:28.61 to receive the Seventh-day Adventist message. 00:02:28.64\00:02:30.85 Today, Bolivia has more than 120,000 Adventists, 00:03:17.13\00:03:21.60 and this number is growing. 00:03:21.63\00:03:23.20 Pastor Mendizabal says the primary reason for growth 00:03:42.48\00:03:45.42 is not because of trained leadership, 00:03:45.45\00:03:47.32 but because of everyday people who share the love of Christ. 00:03:47.36\00:03:50.73 This spirit of outreach 00:04:12.55\00:04:13.88 is especially evident in Cochabamba. 00:04:13.92\00:04:17.09 Cochabamba is both a city and a region 00:04:17.12\00:04:19.55 located in the central part of the country. 00:04:19.59\00:04:22.76 It is the agricultural heartland of Bolivia, 00:04:22.79\00:04:25.26 thanks to the area's mild climate and fertile soil, 00:04:25.29\00:04:29.80 but Cochabamba isn't a acquaint farming town. 00:04:29.83\00:04:32.37 It is the fourth biggest city in Bolivia 00:04:32.40\00:04:34.50 with more than 800,000 residents. 00:04:34.54\00:04:38.71 Life in the city is an interesting 00:04:38.74\00:04:40.48 mix of modern advancements and enduring traditions. 00:04:40.51\00:04:45.51 Here in the region of Cochabamba, 00:04:45.55\00:04:47.48 there are more than 18,000 Seventh-day Adventists 00:04:47.52\00:04:50.75 at 152 congregations. 00:04:50.79\00:04:53.69 Unfortunately, 00:04:53.72\00:04:55.06 there is a shortage of churches. 00:04:55.09\00:04:56.89 At least 60 groups are in need of a building. 00:04:56.93\00:05:00.70 Some congregations have beautiful sanctuaries. 00:05:00.73\00:05:04.17 Many like this one on the outskirts of the city 00:05:04.20\00:05:06.70 are struggling to find a decent place to worship. 00:05:06.74\00:05:09.27 This is the Bente de Octubre congregation. 00:05:12.44\00:05:15.88 They were born from the outreach efforts 00:05:15.91\00:05:17.65 of Viennadicto Ventura. 00:05:17.68\00:05:20.88 Benedicto lived in a different town, 00:05:20.92\00:05:22.88 but he used to travel to this neighborhood 00:05:22.92\00:05:24.89 to share food as outreach. 00:05:24.92\00:05:28.92 Eventually Benedicto and his wife moved to the area 00:05:28.96\00:05:32.09 to plant a church. 00:05:32.13\00:05:34.10 Three people began meeting as a result. 00:05:34.13\00:05:36.67 Eventually 14 were baptized 00:05:36.70\00:05:38.87 following an evangelism campaign. 00:05:38.90\00:05:41.70 Today, there are 35 members of the Bente de Octubre Church. 00:05:41.74\00:05:45.87 They meet regularly in this borrowed shed. 00:05:45.91\00:05:48.94 It is hardly worthy to be called 00:05:48.98\00:05:50.48 a place of worship, but it is all they have. 00:05:50.51\00:05:52.81 One day the congregation hopes to build a real church. 00:05:56.32\00:06:00.06 Benedicto and his wife even purchased land, 00:06:00.09\00:06:02.79 but there is no money to build a structure. 00:06:02.82\00:06:05.79 In the meantime, the group continues to minister 00:06:05.83\00:06:08.23 to the local community. 00:06:08.26\00:06:09.60 On the other side of Cochabamba, 00:06:12.50\00:06:14.10 another family is busy growing a church. 00:06:14.14\00:06:17.37 This is Alto Mirador. 00:06:17.41\00:06:19.71 Six years ago, Maximo Tito, and his wife Alejandra 00:06:19.74\00:06:23.14 started this group with their family. 00:06:23.18\00:06:25.98 The congregation has attracted lots of young people 00:06:26.01\00:06:28.62 who are seeking community, friendship and faith. 00:06:28.65\00:06:32.25 Every Sabbath, 00:06:32.29\00:06:33.62 more than 80 people gather for worship. 00:06:33.66\00:06:36.32 They meet in this unfinished space 00:06:36.36\00:06:38.49 located on the Maximo's property, 00:06:38.53\00:06:40.76 not everyone can fit inside. 00:06:40.80\00:06:43.30 They would like to build a church on the property, 00:06:43.33\00:06:45.27 but the congregation has little to no money. 00:06:45.30\00:06:48.34 Unfortunately, the church's enthusiasm 00:06:48.37\00:06:50.67 is being stifled by the lack of space, 00:06:50.71\00:06:54.08 both Bente de Octubre and Alto Mirador 00:06:54.11\00:06:56.68 represent a challenge in Cochabamba 00:06:56.71\00:06:58.65 and throughout the country. 00:06:58.68\00:07:00.02 In 2018, 00:07:27.48\00:07:28.88 at the request of the Adventist leadership in Bolivia, 00:07:28.91\00:07:31.41 Maranatha kicked off a long-term effort 00:07:31.45\00:07:33.75 to build churches in Bolivia. 00:07:33.78\00:07:36.08 The work will start in Cochabamba, 00:07:36.12\00:07:37.85 then eventually move to other areas of the country. 00:07:37.89\00:07:40.46 When we come back, 00:08:12.99\00:08:14.32 we'll hear the story of a congregation 00:08:14.36\00:08:16.06 and their answered prayer. 00:08:16.09\00:08:17.93 This is the country of Sao Tome and Principe. 00:08:35.28\00:08:39.38 This collection of tiny islands 00:08:39.41\00:08:41.15 is home to breathtaking coastlines, 00:08:41.18\00:08:45.49 miles of jungle, 00:08:45.52\00:08:48.69 a fascinating history and colorful life all around. 00:08:48.72\00:08:54.33 It is also a place 00:08:58.77\00:09:00.10 where the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:09:00.14\00:09:01.57 has been growing, 00:09:01.60\00:09:03.20 but the resources for the church have not. 00:09:03.24\00:09:06.37 Make a donation to sponsor a church 00:09:06.41\00:09:08.41 in Sao Tome and Principe, 00:09:08.44\00:09:11.11 or volunteer for an upcoming Maranatha project 00:09:11.15\00:09:13.98 and help to build churches and schools and coordinate 00:09:14.02\00:09:16.99 outreach programs. 00:09:17.02\00:09:19.12 Help change a country, build a community, 00:09:19.15\00:09:24.69 transform a life. 00:09:24.73\00:09:26.26 The region of Cochabamba is located on a plain 00:09:32.80\00:09:35.47 in the Andes Mountains. 00:09:35.50\00:09:37.64 While the main city is on the valley floor, 00:09:37.67\00:09:39.77 little towns and neighborhoods crawl up the surrounding hills. 00:09:39.81\00:09:44.11 One of these neighborhoods is Colina Ecologica. 00:09:44.15\00:09:47.98 Just a few months ago, this was an area 00:09:48.02\00:09:50.15 with no Seventh-day Adventist presence. 00:09:50.19\00:09:52.45 Daria Chipana was among those 00:10:40.74\00:10:42.60 who were impacted by the evangelism meetings. 00:10:42.64\00:10:46.04 Daria was not Adventist, 00:10:46.07\00:10:47.74 but she grew up attending Adventist schools. 00:10:47.78\00:10:50.95 Her family was Christian 00:10:50.98\00:10:52.31 and Daria attended church regularly. 00:10:52.35\00:10:55.12 When Daria got married, 00:10:55.15\00:10:56.48 she and her husband moved to Cochabamba. 00:10:56.52\00:10:59.25 That's when faith and church took a back seat. 00:10:59.29\00:11:02.26 Daria was suddenly alone, she was a widow, 00:11:18.34\00:11:21.61 single mother and estranged from her family. 00:11:21.64\00:11:24.58 She survived by selling items in the marketplace, 00:11:24.61\00:11:27.28 but life was difficult and lonely. 00:11:27.32\00:11:30.55 Then Daria was walking in her neighborhood 00:11:30.59\00:11:33.15 when she heard the sound of singing 00:11:33.19\00:11:34.52 coming from the local community center. 00:11:34.56\00:11:36.69 It struck a chord in her heart 00:11:36.73\00:11:38.49 and Daria followed the music to church. 00:11:38.53\00:11:41.03 Today Daria and her children 00:12:16.10\00:12:17.97 are part of the 45 member congregation, 00:12:18.00\00:12:20.77 yet she says it's more than a congregation. 00:12:20.80\00:12:23.27 It's a family. 00:12:23.30\00:12:24.64 Daria sentiment is repeated by her fellow members. 00:13:11.02\00:13:13.92 They say this group is like a family, 00:13:13.96\00:13:17.16 but this is a family without a real home. 00:13:17.19\00:13:20.00 Members have to work around 00:13:28.80\00:13:30.14 the schedule of the community center 00:13:30.17\00:13:31.51 and the restrictions of the space. 00:13:31.54\00:13:34.01 It creates complications for the group 00:13:34.04\00:13:36.11 and the lack of permanent space 00:13:36.14\00:13:37.88 makes it difficult to draw visitors. 00:13:37.91\00:13:39.81 So like so many congregations in Bolivia, 00:14:08.21\00:14:11.15 the members saved money for land 00:14:11.18\00:14:13.11 But how would they be able to build a structure? 00:14:24.29\00:14:27.00 It was a challenge to find the funds for the land. 00:14:27.03\00:14:29.76 Raising more money for construction materials 00:14:29.80\00:14:32.20 seemed impossible. 00:14:32.23\00:14:34.24 Then the members heard about 00:14:34.27\00:14:35.97 Maranatha Volunteers International 00:14:36.00\00:14:38.07 and the upcoming effort in Bolivia. 00:14:38.11\00:14:40.48 Adventist leadership in the country was meeting 00:14:40.51\00:14:42.58 with Maranatha to discuss the needs. 00:14:42.61\00:14:45.01 Could Colina Ecologica be on the list 00:14:45.05\00:14:47.45 to receive a new church? 00:14:47.48\00:14:49.68 Joaquin Rios is a member of Colina Ecologica. 00:14:49.72\00:14:53.05 He remembers hearing about 00:14:53.09\00:14:54.42 the possibility of Maranatha helping his group. 00:14:54.46\00:14:56.79 They also decided to meet for prayer. 00:15:11.21\00:15:13.38 They met early in the morning and began to pray in earnest. 00:15:13.41\00:15:16.64 In less than a year, the people of Colina Ecologica 00:15:53.45\00:15:56.65 were able to organize worships and outreach in a new area, 00:15:56.69\00:16:00.36 form a congregation and purchase land for a church. 00:16:00.39\00:16:04.39 And in the next year, 00:16:04.43\00:16:05.76 thanks to their determination and God's assurance, 00:16:05.79\00:16:08.56 Daria and Joaquin will have a sanctuary, 00:16:08.60\00:16:11.37 a permanent place to worship and grow the family of God. 00:16:11.40\00:16:14.87 The Colina Ecologica project along with many other projects 00:16:25.38\00:16:28.82 in Bolivia is in need of sponsorship. 00:16:28.85\00:16:31.49 Please make a donation toward this church 00:16:31.52\00:16:33.72 or any other in Bolivia 00:16:33.76\00:16:35.42 to continue answering the prayers 00:16:35.46\00:16:37.46 for this faithful community. 00:16:37.49\00:16:41.26 When we come back, we'll meet another group 00:16:41.30\00:16:43.47 with unshakeable faith and without a place to worship. 00:16:43.50\00:16:46.43 This summer, go back to college, 00:16:59.98\00:17:02.58 Maranatha has two projects lined up at colleges 00:17:02.62\00:17:05.35 in the United States, and we could use your help. 00:17:05.39\00:17:08.42 First up is Union College Project plumbing. 00:17:39.59\00:17:41.62 Both projects need a lot of skilled workers 00:17:41.66\00:17:43.96 and helpers who can jump in to assist with any task. 00:17:43.99\00:17:47.43 As with all North more details on all of Maranatha's 00:18:54.70\00:18:56.67 volunteer opportunities at maranatha.org. 00:18:56.70\00:19:02.10 It is a Thursday morning in Fortaleza, 00:19:02.14\00:19:04.54 a suburb just outside the city of Cochabamba. 00:19:04.57\00:19:08.14 At this construction site, 00:19:08.18\00:19:09.51 these men have been hard at work, 00:19:09.54\00:19:11.01 raising the walls of this structure, 00:19:11.05\00:19:13.98 but the men are not getting paid. 00:19:14.02\00:19:15.48 This work is voluntary. 00:19:15.52\00:19:17.59 Together, they are building toward a dream. 00:19:17.62\00:19:20.86 One day, 00:19:20.89\00:19:22.22 this building will serve as Sabbath school classrooms. 00:19:22.26\00:19:25.39 As for the empty lot next door, 00:19:25.43\00:19:27.43 it is the site of the future Fortaleza Adventist Church. 00:19:27.46\00:19:30.83 Demetria and his wife Filomena live here 00:19:55.36\00:19:57.79 just down the street from the church side. 00:19:57.83\00:20:00.46 They are the founding members of the Fortaleza group. 00:20:00.50\00:20:03.23 In fact, they moved to the neighborhood 00:20:03.26\00:20:04.83 to plant the church. 00:20:04.87\00:20:07.64 For months, worship was held in their home, 00:20:07.67\00:20:10.24 sometimes in their living room, 00:20:10.27\00:20:12.67 sometimes outside under the carport, 00:20:12.71\00:20:15.34 but opening their home wasn't easy. 00:20:15.38\00:20:18.05 Demetrio and his family run a business from their house. 00:20:18.08\00:20:20.98 They produce and sell athletic clothing, 00:20:21.02\00:20:23.95 shirts and shorts. 00:20:23.99\00:20:26.35 Between equipment and inventory, 00:20:26.39\00:20:28.12 there isn't a lot of room to accommodate a congregation. 00:20:28.16\00:20:30.89 Now, they meet in the patio 00:20:41.80\00:20:43.51 of another church member's home. 00:20:43.54\00:20:45.74 An average of 25 people gather here each week. 00:20:45.77\00:20:50.55 Unfortunately, Fortaleza lost a few people 00:20:50.58\00:20:52.98 from the constant moving. 00:20:53.01\00:20:55.38 It was imperative that the congregation 00:20:55.42\00:20:57.25 find a permanent place of worship. 00:20:57.29\00:20:59.25 So everyone made a commitment to donate money to buy land. 00:20:59.29\00:21:03.02 The answer came in two parts. 00:22:08.92\00:22:11.39 First, they found a plot sold to them at an affordable price, 00:22:11.43\00:22:16.06 the second part of God's answer, Maranatha. 00:22:16.10\00:22:19.50 Maranatha will be constructing a church in Fortaleza. 00:22:19.53\00:22:23.00 Pastor Yana says the impact will be huge. 00:22:23.04\00:22:25.77 This story of sacrifice and dedication 00:23:16.02\00:23:18.53 is not uncommon in Bolivia. 00:23:18.56\00:23:20.80 All of the congregations that Maranatha met 00:23:20.83\00:23:23.13 were made up of working class people. 00:23:23.16\00:23:26.23 Many worked in Bolivia's marketplaces 00:23:26.27\00:23:28.40 where people gathered to sell an assortment of goods. 00:23:28.44\00:23:32.24 Most earn only enough to support their families, 00:23:32.27\00:23:35.61 but everyone was committed to giving 00:23:35.64\00:23:37.51 what they could to help their church, 00:23:37.55\00:23:41.22 people like Alberto Maida. 00:23:41.25\00:23:44.99 Alberto is a peach farmer. 00:23:45.02\00:23:46.99 He has an orchard in San Benito, 00:23:47.02\00:23:48.82 an area outside of the city of Cochabamba. 00:23:48.86\00:23:52.83 Not too long ago, Alberto moved to San Benito 00:23:52.86\00:23:55.63 and one of his first objectives 00:23:55.66\00:23:57.50 besides establishing a home and a business 00:23:57.53\00:23:59.80 was to find a Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:23:59.83\00:24:04.11 Unfortunately, what he found wasn't much. 00:24:04.14\00:24:07.11 It was disappointing to see such a ragged space. 00:24:23.83\00:24:26.56 Alberto joined the group, 00:24:26.59\00:24:27.96 but he was determined to make some changes. 00:24:28.00\00:24:31.07 He knew they needed a real church. 00:24:31.10\00:24:33.50 But purchasing land would not be easy. 00:24:43.71\00:24:46.01 However, Alberto's situation was a bit different. 00:25:08.80\00:25:12.51 He wasn't wealthy, but as a peach farmer, 00:25:12.54\00:25:15.04 he was fortunate. 00:25:15.08\00:25:16.41 When it became apparent 00:25:29.52\00:25:30.86 that the meager wages of the membership 00:25:30.89\00:25:32.56 could not raise all the money needed for land, 00:25:32.59\00:25:35.00 Alberto decided to turn his personal blessings 00:25:35.03\00:25:37.80 into a blessing for his church. 00:25:37.83\00:25:42.00 Alberto and his wife traveled to the town of Albany, 00:25:42.04\00:25:45.07 where they owned land. 00:25:45.11\00:25:47.08 They sold all their property. 00:25:47.11\00:25:48.48 Then donated the money to San Benito. 00:25:48.51\00:25:50.71 Maranatha is hoping to build a new church 00:26:25.45\00:26:27.42 for the San Benito congregation, 00:26:27.45\00:26:29.02 as part of a larger effort in Cochabamba. 00:26:29.05\00:26:34.26 Alberto gave all he had to help his church. 00:26:34.29\00:26:38.06 Now, he and his fellow believers 00:26:38.09\00:26:40.06 are praying that you will be moved 00:26:40.10\00:26:41.66 to help them with the rest. 00:26:41.70\00:26:43.16 This work in central Bolivia is just the beginning 00:27:11.46\00:27:13.90 of Maranatha's first effort in the country. 00:27:13.93\00:27:15.90 In 2018, volunteers will begin constructing churches 00:27:19.03\00:27:22.47 in Cochabamba and its surrounding areas. 00:27:22.50\00:27:25.61 But as the church continues to grow, 00:27:25.64\00:27:27.58 Maranatha will expand into the eastern 00:27:27.61\00:27:29.94 and western parts of the country 00:27:29.98\00:27:31.38 to build churches and schools. 00:27:31.41\00:27:34.85 Help to strengthen the gospel in Bolivia, 00:27:34.88\00:27:37.92 volunteer with Maranatha 00:27:37.95\00:27:39.75 or make a donation toward church construction projects. 00:27:39.79\00:27:42.96 Each of the stories shared in this episode 00:27:42.99\00:27:45.16 are in need of financial help. 00:27:45.19\00:27:47.16 And any gift you make will make a difference. 00:27:47.20\00:27:50.57 Partner with the people of Bolivia 00:27:50.60\00:27:52.27 by joining their spirit of generosity. 00:27:52.30\00:27:55.07 Together, let's grow the Adventist Church 00:27:55.10\00:27:57.81 and expand our faith community in Bolivia.
