- Hi. I'm Hilary Marcias with the Maranatha Minute. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.96 This month, the country of Côte d'Ivoire welcomed 00:00:03.67\00:00:06.00 its first team of Maranatha volunteers. This team of 00:00:06.07\00:00:09.57 22 came all the way from Brazil to help build the Annan 00:00:09.67\00:00:13.14 Seventh-day Adventist Church. The Annan 00:00:13.21\00:00:15.74 congregation currently has a church, which was 00:00:15.84\00:00:18.08 built decades ago through the hard work of members 00:00:18.15\00:00:20.28 who scrimped and saved throughout the years. However, 00:00:20.38\00:00:23.79 the government has announced that a new 00:00:23.89\00:00:25.62 road will be cutting straight through the 00:00:25.72\00:00:27.72 village and through the precise location of the 00:00:27.82\00:00:30.19 church site. Now, the congregation will have 00:00:30.29\00:00:33.16 to move to a new site and need help building 00:00:33.23\00:00:35.53 an actual structure. Maranatha has committed 00:00:35.60\00:00:38.57 to building a new sanctuary in Annan as part of the 00:00:38.63\00:00:40.97 larger effort in Côte d'Ivoire to provide 00:00:41.04\00:00:43.07 churches and schools in the greater Abidjan area. 00:00:43.14\00:00:45.57 Get the latest on projects like Côte d'Ivoire and how 00:00:46.57\00:00:49.24 you can get involved by registering for Maranatha 00:00:49.34\00:00:52.05 Matters, our weekly email newsletter. Go to maranatha.org, 00:00:52.15\00:00:56.28 scroll to the bottom, and sign up. 00:00:56.38\00:00:58.65 inside the dormitory. 00:01:27.55\00:01:30.95 And then in the morning, we find out that the 00:01:31.02\00:01:33.05 mud is floating on the floor. It was a challenge 00:01:33.12\00:01:38.36 coping with the situation. Sometimes, the rain 00:01:38.46\00:01:41.63 will come in through the windows-the 00:01:41.73\00:01:44.17 unclosable windows. - It was challenging 00:01:44.27\00:01:46.47 at night. The location was hard, and also 00:01:46.53\00:01:51.41 to wake up in the morning then go to class when you 00:01:51.47\00:01:55.44 have not slept well at night...so it was challenging. 00:01:55.54\00:01:58.98 - It was not good; it was really, really 00:02:00.42\00:02:03.02 challenging. Sometimes, you want to become 00:02:03.08\00:02:05.59 discouraged and hoped to go to another school. 00:02:05.65\00:02:09.16 But due to the circumstances, we still pressed on due to 00:02:09.26\00:02:13.36 the encouragement the teacher was giving 00:02:13.46\00:02:16.30 us and telling us, "Just pray hard, and 00:02:16.40\00:02:19.67 something's gonna happen." So we prayed and believed 00:02:19.73\00:02:22.94 that something is going to happen even after the 00:02:23.00\00:02:25.97 longsuffering and that truly, God cared. - The 00:02:26.04\00:02:31.05 Kiutine Adventist school in Kenya is a secondary 00:02:31.11\00:02:33.48 boarding school home to 230 students. For years, 00:02:33.58\00:02:37.19 the students have lived in deplorable conditions. 00:02:37.29\00:02:39.99 Seventh-day Adventist Church leadership in Kenya 00:02:40.06\00:02:42.39 approached Maranatha for help. And in 2018, 00:02:42.49\00:02:45.59 Maranatha agreed to improve the campus at 00:02:45.66\00:02:47.90 Kiutine. Groups of Maranatha volunteers 00:02:48.00\00:02:52.53 began constructing new dormitories, classrooms, 00:02:52.60\00:02:55.57 bathrooms, a kitchen, and a cafeteria. As 00:02:55.67\00:03:01.94 volunteer teams were organized, The Ultimate 00:03:02.04\00:03:03.78 Workout, Maranatha's annual teens-only mission 00:03:03.85\00:03:06.78 trip for high schoolers, was added to the list of 00:03:06.85\00:03:09.08 those that would help at Kiutine. In its 29th 00:03:09.18\00:03:12.45 year, this would be Ultimate Workout's 00:03:12.55\00:03:14.52 first visit to the continent of Africa. In July 2019, 00:03:14.62\00:03:18.83 111 teens and adult leaders made their 00:03:18.93\00:03:21.90 way to Kenya for an experience they'd never 00:03:22.00\00:03:24.23 forget. - They're so sweet. They're so kind, 00:03:24.33\00:03:30.61 they're so welcoming, they want to meet you, 00:03:30.71\00:03:33.78 they're curious about you... They're just great 00:03:33.88\00:03:38.08 people in general. Like, I've never met kinder 00:03:38.18\00:03:41.15 people in my life. - The Kiutine students 00:03:41.25\00:03:44.45 are very loving, very appreciative, thanking 00:03:44.55\00:03:50.26 us for being here, very hospitable... I remember 00:03:50.33\00:03:54.60 when I got off the bus and we were first- I'm 00:03:54.70\00:03:59.00 loading our luggage. One of the Kiutine students 00:03:59.07\00:04:03.37 grabbed me by the hand and walked me to the truck 00:04:04.51\00:04:08.54 to get our luggage off. And since then, he's 00:04:08.64\00:04:10.95 found me in worship, we've sat and sung 00:04:11.05\00:04:13.78 together, it...you know. He brought his brother, 00:04:13.85\00:04:17.15 I met the whole... We've taken pictures together; 00:04:17.25\00:04:20.39 they're just very warm and inviting people. - One 00:04:20.46\00:04:24.19 thing I really noticed about them and just 00:04:24.29\00:04:25.96 everyone here is they're always so content. Like, 00:04:26.06\00:04:29.76 I mean, we've seen what they've come from and 00:04:29.90\00:04:32.63 what they still currently have, and they're so 00:04:32.70\00:04:35.34 content. - So I got to tour the campus 00:04:35.44\00:04:38.94 where they used to stay, and I went into the girls' 00:04:39.01\00:04:43.51 dorm. I was quite shocked by what I saw. It was just 00:04:43.61\00:04:47.88 mud floor and bunk beds that were not really 00:04:47.98\00:04:52.79 bunk beds, and it was just open. The floorboards 00:04:52.89\00:04:56.16 were, the walls, were open, so anything could actually 00:04:56.29\00:04:59.16 come in. I was just wondering what happens 00:04:59.26\00:05:01.93 when the rain fell. It was just really sad 00:05:02.03\00:05:06.23 and deplorable. - Lots of dust and high winds. 00:05:06.33\00:05:13.34 It was definitely a different atmosphere, 00:05:14.54\00:05:16.48 and also very different living conditions. - The 00:05:16.54\00:05:21.48 dormitories weren't very good, the floor was just 00:05:21.58\00:05:24.09 bad... One thing that stood out to me, personally, 00:05:24.15\00:05:27.39 is the showers. Just like, this, like, closed off area, 00:05:27.49\00:05:30.43 and there's just rocks everywhere and you just 00:05:30.53\00:05:32.53 have a bucket, and you dump it over your head. 00:05:32.59\00:05:35.13 So, it was really bad, and I'm glad that we're 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.50 here to help and make them new ones, but yeah. 00:05:38.57\00:05:40.50 Just everything that was the boys' dorm, the girls' 00:05:41.17\00:05:43.64 dorm... And the kitchen wasn't so great, either. 00:05:43.74\00:05:46.51 - I was not expecting to see something like 00:05:47.18\00:05:50.45 these conditions as poor as they are... I mean, you 00:05:50.51\00:05:53.95 wouldn't see anything like this back home. 00:05:54.02\00:05:56.69 - It's just totally different. I mean, 00:05:58.22\00:06:00.09 my school has running water, it has walls, 00:06:00.16\00:06:04.46 actual walls... It's just completely different. 00:06:04.56\00:06:10.30 I don't even think you can compare the two, 00:06:10.37\00:06:12.57 because now- even though my school, I wouldn't say 00:06:12.63\00:06:15.34 it's in the best condition, it's still a thousand times 00:06:15.40\00:06:20.18 better than what they used to have. - Oh, it 00:06:20.28\00:06:24.48 humbles me, and it makes me feel like I'm a spoiled 00:06:24.58\00:06:27.68 brat. [laughs] Yeah. We're very fortunate in 00:06:27.78\00:06:34.92 America and we take for granted what we have. 00:06:35.02\00:06:38.09 - When we come back, see how Ultimate Workout 00:06:38.19\00:06:41.33 volunteers help to improve conditions at the Kiutine 00:06:41.43\00:06:44.20 school and serve in the local community. 00:06:44.30\00:06:46.60 - For more than a decade, Maranatha Mission Stories 00:07:01.45\00:07:04.05 has taken you around the world, showing you the 00:07:04.12\00:07:06.89 need and challenging you to get involved. The Maranatha Channel, 00:07:43.89\00:07:48.13 bringing mission adventures to your living room. 00:07:48.20\00:07:51.17 - For Ultimate Workout in 2019, volunteers 00:08:00.34\00:08:03.18 were tasked with constructing a new boys' dorm and a 00:08:03.24\00:08:06.15 classroom at the Kiutine Adventist school in Kenya. 00:08:06.21\00:08:09.35 After learning how to lay block, the teens got 00:08:12.95\00:08:14.92 to work building these much-needed structures. 00:08:15.02\00:08:17.43 - I really like the block work. I did medical team 00:08:18.33\00:08:25.83 once. I really enjoyed that, but I also really 00:08:25.90\00:08:28.90 love the construction aspect. I love getting a 00:08:29.00\00:08:32.47 pickaxe and hitting concrete or rock, 00:08:32.57\00:08:38.61 building a foundation... I love getting my hands 00:08:39.15\00:08:41.68 dirty. - I think even though the kids are 00:08:41.78\00:08:44.85 happy with what they have now, I think it's 00:08:44.92\00:08:46.72 going to mean much more for them. They recognize 00:08:46.82\00:08:50.13 that they can get a better education if they 00:08:50.23\00:08:52.69 have a better place to learn in. So I think it 00:08:52.76\00:08:55.46 will be really good that they can have clean- 00:08:55.60\00:08:59.57 a roof that don't leak when they're learning, 00:09:02.00\00:09:03.71 desks that work when they need to, just... 00:09:05.04\00:09:07.71 So, I think it's going to be great for their education. 00:09:08.14\00:09:10.28 - Besides construction, the volunteers were able 00:09:11.51\00:09:13.72 to serve on one of two outreach teams and a 00:09:13.85\00:09:16.28 medical team. - I've been doing VBS and 00:09:16.38\00:09:18.72 outreach this whole time, and I actually genuinely 00:09:18.82\00:09:24.56 care about them and I'm going to miss them a lot. 00:09:24.63\00:09:27.83 - In visiting the local schools, and the 00:09:30.57\00:09:33.47 kids are just so amazing. They're so sweet, they're 00:09:33.57\00:09:35.70 so curious; they grab all over you, they love 00:09:35.80\00:09:38.27 to hug you, they love to touch you, and just... 00:09:38.37\00:09:40.68 You feel so loved even though you don't know 00:09:40.78\00:09:42.54 them. A lot of the kids, I don't know their names, 00:09:42.68\00:09:45.61 probably 'cause I can't pronounce them or remember 00:09:45.71\00:09:47.95 them, but they still love me. And even though they may 00:09:48.05\00:09:51.45 think I'm kind of weird or different, they still 00:09:51.55\00:09:55.02 love me and they're so welcoming. - The four or 00:09:55.12\00:09:58.86 five communities that we've gone to provide 00:09:58.93\00:10:01.10 medical services, the need has been so great. 00:10:01.20\00:10:04.57 And we haven't been able to see everyone, but it 00:10:05.23\00:10:08.54 has been a difference between this mission 00:10:08.64\00:10:11.31 trip and others that I've gone on. Our role here 00:10:11.41\00:10:14.81 is twofold; it's one to mentor the young people 00:10:14.91\00:10:18.45 that we have brought over and give them exposure 00:10:18.55\00:10:21.55 into medicine. We've been able to show them 00:10:21.68\00:10:24.82 how to do things that they probably won't do 00:10:24.92\00:10:28.52 for several years in the future. Some of them said 00:10:28.59\00:10:30.53 they didn't really know that it would be so hands-on, 00:10:30.59\00:10:33.03 and they've been able to- you know. I go by the 00:10:33.13\00:10:36.16 mantra-and it's in medicine- that you see one, you do 00:10:36.23\00:10:40.14 one, and then you teach one. So, they would see 00:10:40.24\00:10:42.30 procedures being done, and then we'd allow them 00:10:42.37\00:10:44.67 to do it. - In between construction and outreach, 00:10:44.74\00:10:48.31 volunteers also took breaks to experience 00:10:48.41\00:10:50.71 quintessential Kenya by going on a safari in 00:10:50.78\00:10:53.42 nearby Meru National Park. - The special moment 00:10:53.52\00:10:56.75 was the safari. I've always wanted to be 00:10:56.82\00:11:00.16 able to go on a safari. And although it is long- 00:11:00.26\00:11:02.22 it was about eight hours- but we got to see everything 00:11:03.86\00:11:06.33 but a lion. Getting to see all of God's creations 00:11:06.43\00:11:11.13 up close is really an amazing thing. Seeing 00:11:11.23\00:11:13.94 rhinos-I never thought I would ever see a rhino. 00:11:14.04\00:11:16.47 That would definitely be a high point in the 00:11:18.17\00:11:20.18 trip so far. - The first Sabbath also featured 00:11:20.31\00:11:23.31 a trip to visit a Samburu tribe to worship in a church 00:11:23.38\00:11:26.15 Maranatha constructed. Ultimate Workout volunteers 00:11:26.25\00:11:29.95 led the church services and experienced a new 00:11:30.05\00:11:32.65 culture. [singing] - Going out to the Samburu 00:11:32.72\00:11:36.52 tribe was very special. Those people had been 00:11:36.66\00:11:42.66 worshiping under a tree, and now they have a one-day 00:11:42.76\00:11:45.10 church and they have pride in that, and they have water 00:11:45.20\00:11:48.14 to drink... - We got to meet some of the 00:11:48.24\00:11:53.27 people in the village and just got to talk to 00:11:53.38\00:11:57.21 them. It was really cool to see all these huts and 00:11:57.28\00:11:59.71 stuff; but here, which is like buildings that are 00:11:59.81\00:12:02.28 similar to kind of- not exactly similar to what we 00:12:02.35\00:12:05.35 have at home, but to see people with mud huts 00:12:05.42\00:12:09.52 and stuff and straws for roofs, that was really 00:12:09.62\00:12:12.69 cool. And the ladies and people there, they 00:12:12.76\00:12:15.40 let us go inside and check it out, which was 00:12:15.50\00:12:17.10 REALLY cool. It was very small; it was just like, 00:12:17.20\00:12:20.54 one sleeping area and a kitchen. It was very 00:12:20.64\00:12:22.87 small, but it was such a neat experience just 00:12:22.94\00:12:24.67 to walk in and to see that. And the people 00:12:24.77\00:12:27.91 there, they started singing and dancing 00:12:27.98\00:12:29.78 in their traditional style and everything. 00:12:29.88\00:12:32.85 That was so cool. I got some videos of it. [singing] 00:12:32.91\00:12:35.35 - One of the unique aspects of this trip was the abundant 00:12:36.25\00:12:38.62 opportunities for interaction between Ultimate Workout 00:12:38.72\00:12:41.62 volunteers and the Kiutine students. - You come into 00:12:41.72\00:12:45.36 this new environment and you don't really 00:12:45.46\00:12:46.80 expect the people you see to be pretty much 00:12:46.90\00:12:50.57 just like you. There are kids just like you even 00:12:50.63\00:12:55.30 though they speak a different language and 00:12:55.40\00:12:57.04 it seems a little bit different, they experience 00:12:57.14\00:13:00.81 the same things that you experience and they react 00:13:00.91\00:13:04.11 to them in a similar fashion. It's interesting 00:13:04.18\00:13:08.68 to figure that out and see how similar you are 00:13:08.78\00:13:13.79 to somebody who's on the other half of the 00:13:13.89\00:13:16.26 world. - They're amazing. I love the kids here. I 00:13:16.39\00:13:21.80 make it a point to kind of get to know every one 00:13:21.90\00:13:23.57 of them. I have made so many friends. They're 00:13:23.63\00:13:25.97 very nice; they're always smiling. If they have a 00:13:26.03\00:13:30.81 bad day, they don't let me see that. 00:13:30.91\00:13:32.74 - It has been an amazing experience 00:13:33.81\00:13:38.15 having them around. For me, I never thought that 00:13:38.21\00:13:41.65 I would come in close contact with you guys- 00:13:41.75\00:13:45.02 these volunteers. But through you, at least 00:13:45.12\00:13:48.09 we have shared a lot. We have known each 00:13:48.16\00:13:51.53 other, we have known what are the hobbies 00:13:51.59\00:13:54.20 of each side. We've really known that there is no 00:13:54.30\00:13:57.03 difference between you guys and us. It has been 00:13:57.13\00:14:00.57 a blessing...yeah. - They like asking a lot 00:14:00.64\00:14:05.34 of questions, figuring out what it's like, 00:14:05.41\00:14:07.44 which I've done the same to them. I'm 00:14:07.51\00:14:11.21 assuming everybody's asked that question or 00:14:11.31\00:14:14.25 said that "I would love to go to Africa." And 00:14:14.32\00:14:17.62 when you get the chance, you can ask them, "What's 00:14:17.72\00:14:19.99 it like? How do things go around here from 00:14:20.09\00:14:24.99 day-to-day life?" They're all really nice 00:14:25.09\00:14:28.86 kids. They're really great singers, especially. 00:14:28.96\00:14:32.60 [singing] - We have gained a lot 00:14:32.70\00:14:38.31 of inspiration from them because you have come 00:14:38.41\00:14:43.55 to understand that you worship the same God. 00:14:43.61\00:14:45.61 And through singing, you have gained a lot 00:14:46.75\00:14:51.89 of messages from them. I know God is pleased of 00:14:51.95\00:14:58.46 what they are doing and He has blessed us through 00:14:58.56\00:15:03.00 them. - With Ultimate Workout designed to 00:15:03.06\00:15:05.50 stretch volunteers' physical and spiritual 00:15:05.57\00:15:08.20 muscles, each day featured multiple worship 00:15:08.30\00:15:10.87 services, including joint programs with the Kiutine 00:15:10.94\00:15:13.64 students. - Joint worships are amazing because just 00:15:13.74\00:15:17.41 Maranatha, when we're having worship, we sing 00:15:17.51\00:15:20.98 and we come and get into it, but not as much. 00:15:21.08\00:15:23.55 But when the kids come over, they really hype us up. 00:15:23.65\00:15:26.05 Personally, they just... They sing very loud; 00:15:26.12\00:15:28.59 they're very into it, and that kind of motivates 00:15:28.66\00:15:30.63 me. That kind of gets me excited, and I get 00:15:30.73\00:15:32.83 more into it, and we just... And when you 00:15:32.93\00:15:34.63 have a bigger crowd, there's more singing, 00:15:34.73\00:15:36.53 it's louder, and it's just more of, like, a 00:15:36.63\00:15:38.77 choir, and it's really cool. They enjoy the 00:15:38.87\00:15:40.54 music; they love it, and they kind of help me 00:15:40.64\00:15:42.94 to kind of enjoy the music, as well, and to 00:15:43.00\00:15:46.07 kind of get into worship. [singing] - My favorite 00:15:46.14\00:15:50.58 part is just the singing. They just drown us out. 00:15:50.65\00:15:53.68 We can't even be heard; they're just always so 00:15:53.78\00:15:55.95 happy. It just makes me smile. I just sit there 00:15:55.98\00:15:59.25 and just close my eyes, and I wish I could just 00:15:59.39\00:16:01.32 look out at all of us instead of just being 00:16:01.42\00:16:05.09 in the mix, because it's just really cool to see 00:16:05.16\00:16:08.73 a bunch of different cultures just completely 00:16:10.07\00:16:12.33 mix but we're all there for the same purpose 00:16:12.40\00:16:15.34 and stuff, so... I don't know. I think it's really 00:16:15.40\00:16:18.31 cool that we get to unite for that. - I just wish I 00:16:18.37\00:16:21.24 could just sit back and just observe it instead 00:16:21.34\00:16:24.78 of being a part of it, 'cause it sounds so good, 00:16:24.85\00:16:27.72 it just looks so good to see them mingling with 00:16:27.78\00:16:30.65 our participants and just hearing the sounds 00:16:30.75\00:16:34.42 of worship and just watching them participate. 00:16:34.52\00:16:37.29 And even though we have such vast difference even 00:16:37.39\00:16:40.36 economically, you can't tell it when we're in worship. 00:16:40.43\00:16:42.90 You really can't. They're just really together and 00:16:42.96\00:16:45.80 just reading the Bible together, sharing everything. 00:16:45.90\00:16:49.34 [singing] - They are pretty interactive 00:16:49.44\00:16:52.87 during worships for the sermon. I was sitting 00:16:52.97\00:16:55.41 next to a girl, and back at home- our church is 00:16:55.48\00:16:58.88 pretty quiet during the sermon. And during the 00:16:58.95\00:17:00.98 sermon, all of the Kiutine students, 00:17:01.08\00:17:03.25 they responded "Amen!" to the pastor and I 00:17:03.35\00:17:06.79 didn't, and she thought it was a little disrespectful 00:17:06.86\00:17:09.02 that I didn't just 'cause I'm not used to it. 00:17:09.12\00:17:11.29 - Due to the way we have been interacting during 00:17:12.89\00:17:15.16 the worships, we have really built the contact 00:17:15.26\00:17:19.43 between us and you. We have shared, and we have 00:17:19.53\00:17:23.87 known that we share a common God and really 00:17:23.97\00:17:26.68 felt that Jesus Christ loves us because we 00:17:26.78\00:17:29.41 are common and share anything in common that 00:17:29.51\00:17:32.41 all of us, we have come to know that all of us, 00:17:32.48\00:17:35.28 God loves us. - When we come back, watch 00:17:35.38\00:17:38.49 the push to complete the work before time 00:17:38.59\00:17:40.69 runs out on the teens' trip in Kenya. 00:17:40.79\00:17:43.56 - In a little over a week, Maranatha is heading 00:17:54.90\00:17:57.67 to Paradise, California to start a mission project, 00:17:57.77\00:18:00.78 and we need your help. From November 5 to 00:18:00.84\00:18:03.38 26, we need volunteers to help build 200 storage 00:18:03.48\00:18:06.82 sheds for residents who lost their homes in the 00:18:06.92\00:18:09.35 2018 Camp Fire. These sheds will provide a 00:18:09.42\00:18:12.89 place for people to store their things as those in 00:18:12.95\00:18:15.12 the area are currently living in RVs and trailers. 00:18:15.22\00:18:18.36 The timing of this project is critical as the rainy 00:18:18.46\00:18:21.16 season is approaching fast. Then, from December 00:18:21.26\00:18:24.37 23 to January 5, spend Christmas and New Years 00:18:24.47\00:18:27.70 on a mission trip. The Ultimate Workout 00:18:27.80\00:18:29.74 Alumni Project is going to La Paz, Bolivia to build 00:18:29.84\00:18:32.91 a new church for a congregation in need. 00:18:32.97\00:18:35.08 While this project is designed for those 00:18:35.14\00:18:37.05 who have been part of Ultimate Workout in the 00:18:37.15\00:18:38.95 past, it's open to all volunteers. So if you're 00:18:39.01\00:18:42.08 looking for adventure over the holidays, register 00:18:42.15\00:18:44.35 for this project today. Learn about all our 00:18:44.45\00:18:47.36 volunteer opportunities on our website at 00:18:47.46\00:18:50.03 maranatha.org under Volunteer Opportunities. 00:18:50.13\00:18:53.50 - Throughout the nearly two-week Ultimate Workout 00:18:57.20\00:18:59.33 in Kenya, friendships were forged, new cultures 00:18:59.40\00:19:02.24 were experienced, and spiritual lessons learned. 00:19:02.34\00:19:05.27 But as the time for departure neared, 00:19:05.97\00:19:07.58 there was concern that the boys' dorm may not 00:19:07.68\00:19:09.91 be completed in time. A special dedication had 00:19:10.01\00:19:13.42 been planned, and the volunteers didn't want 00:19:13.52\00:19:15.42 to leave the building unfinished. - This morning, 00:19:15.48\00:19:19.42 we had an opportunity to choose to go to outreach 00:19:19.49\00:19:22.52 or stay and do construction. I decided to stay, mainly 00:19:22.62\00:19:29.23 because Wills was the lead construction worker, 00:19:29.33\00:19:34.00 reminded us that this is a special situation. 00:19:35.14\00:19:38.81 We get to build this whole place from the 00:19:39.81\00:19:43.14 ground up, and then we get to help them move 00:19:43.24\00:19:45.61 into it. It's something that I've never experienced; 00:19:45.75\00:19:49.88 it's something that he has never experienced. 00:19:49.98\00:19:52.05 Being able to put in their bunk beds, set 00:19:52.15\00:19:56.02 up their mattresses and help them move into a 00:19:56.12\00:19:58.76 place, I'm hoping it's gonna be a really great 00:19:58.86\00:20:03.77 thing. - I'm sure they're very excited, because 00:20:03.83\00:20:08.00 they've been watching us build them, and other 00:20:08.10\00:20:11.04 Maranatha volunteers. They watch them build 00:20:11.14\00:20:13.98 it, and they're really excited to have more 00:20:14.04\00:20:16.11 space and to have more showers and better bathrooms 00:20:16.21\00:20:19.91 and stuff. I think they're very, very pumped, very 00:20:20.02\00:20:22.62 excited, to have better living conditions. I mean, 00:20:22.68\00:20:25.95 I would be, too, if I were them. - With new 00:20:26.02\00:20:29.56 resolve to finish the work on time, volunteers 00:20:29.62\00:20:32.06 made a push to accelerate the construction of the 00:20:32.13\00:20:34.40 boys' dorm-and got the job done! - I'm a lot 00:20:34.50\00:20:39.80 more capable than what I think. We can push our 00:20:39.87\00:20:47.28 bodies farther than what our mind can 00:20:47.34\00:20:49.78 think. We might think that we aren't able to 00:20:49.94\00:20:54.28 lift the block up to the next level and be able 00:20:54.38\00:20:58.22 to set another one-you know?-just before lunch... 00:20:58.32\00:21:01.66 but we can do it. [singing] 00:21:02.66\00:21:07.46 - On the final Friday, the boys' dormitory 00:21:08.86\00:21:10.83 and the new classroom were dedicated with a 00:21:10.90\00:21:13.27 number of regional Seventh-day Adventist 00:21:13.34\00:21:14.90 Church officials present. - The new dorm-we are 00:21:15.00\00:21:22.18 able to sleep in our own beddings, and 00:21:22.28\00:21:28.88 comfortably. And when it comes time for 00:21:28.98\00:21:32.85 going to class, you don't feel like you have been 00:21:32.92\00:21:37.69 in the wrong place at night, so it is good. - It 00:21:37.76\00:21:43.16 means the world to them, I would assume. If I lived 00:21:43.23\00:21:45.83 in these kinds of conditions and I had 00:21:45.93\00:21:49.84 a shower built for me and I actually had a 00:21:49.94\00:21:52.71 decent bathroom and a nice living space, I 00:21:52.81\00:21:57.71 would be pretty grateful for what I got, you know? 00:21:57.81\00:21:59.88 - It's like heaven. At least, I'd assume so. 00:22:01.08\00:22:04.82 If I lived in this prior to those, that's a huge 00:22:04.92\00:22:08.36 change. - If we compare the times we were sleeping 00:22:08.46\00:22:12.89 in the old dorms, people were sluggish during the 00:22:12.99\00:22:16.10 day because they never slept, and people were 00:22:16.20\00:22:18.30 sleeping in classes when the teacher was teaching. 00:22:18.37\00:22:21.50 But now because you are enjoying sleep back in the 00:22:21.64\00:22:24.87 dormitory, you don't have that sleep, and now you 00:22:24.97\00:22:28.61 can cooperate in class. May God bless you for 00:22:28.68\00:22:32.51 the wonderful work that you have done unto our 00:22:32.61\00:22:34.45 school. If it was not for you, we don't know 00:22:34.52\00:22:36.62 where it would be. You've really transformed this 00:22:36.72\00:22:39.05 school. We can't express the gratitude we have 00:22:39.19\00:22:42.26 because you have been really good to us, you've 00:22:42.32\00:22:45.29 really helped us come from the situation that 00:22:45.39\00:22:48.50 we were in. And really now, it's great. May 00:22:48.56\00:22:51.73 God bless you. [singing] 00:22:51.83\00:22:55.10 - The joyous celebration was followed by a special 00:23:21.33\00:23:23.60 Sabbath that sought 37 people baptized, including 00:23:23.73\00:23:27.10 Kiutine students and 26 Ultimate Workout volunteers. 00:23:27.20\00:23:31.27 It was the culmination of a nearly two-week 00:23:32.17\00:23:34.54 experience filled with spiritual growth, physical 00:23:34.64\00:23:37.45 challenges, and expending worldviews. - It's quite 00:23:37.55\00:23:43.92 a workout-mentally, spiritually-getting to 00:23:44.02\00:23:46.65 know God... I feel like that can actually bring 00:23:46.76\00:23:48.96 you closer to God. And physically, it's hard work. 00:23:49.06\00:23:52.63 So, it's, all around... I love the name- 00:23:52.76\00:23:55.46 Ultimate Workout-it quite is an ultimate 00:23:55.56\00:23:57.73 workout. - Ultimate Workout is...it's a 00:23:57.83\00:24:02.40 tough experience. [clapping] It pushes you out of your 00:24:02.47\00:24:06.94 comfort zone, which is something that very 00:24:07.01\00:24:09.94 few people like. Going outside of the country 00:24:10.01\00:24:14.12 is never easy, getting used to the time changes- 00:24:14.22\00:24:18.15 and Ultimate Workout presents all of that. 00:24:19.79\00:24:23.09 It presents waking up early, getting to work, 00:24:23.19\00:24:27.56 worship... I mean, worship is a time of 00:24:27.63\00:24:32.10 rest and praising the Lord-but right after 00:24:32.20\00:24:36.10 that, we're going straight to work. It's hard, but 00:24:36.20\00:24:40.24 that's what's great about it. - I don't know. 00:24:40.31\00:24:46.01 I guess I learned how to be more loving and open, 00:24:46.11\00:24:49.65 because back home you have your space that 00:24:49.72\00:24:54.26 you're comfortable in. And when you're 00:24:54.36\00:24:55.99 completely removed from it and dropped in another 00:24:56.06\00:24:59.46 situation, it makes you have to adapt. - I think 00:24:59.53\00:25:06.33 I just learned that I need to be more content 00:25:06.40\00:25:08.10 with what I have. There's a lot of stuff that it's 00:25:08.17\00:25:10.41 like, "Oh, I need this, or I need that." But 00:25:10.51\00:25:13.81 after being here, I realize that a bunch 00:25:13.88\00:25:16.11 of my needs are more just wants. - I listen to 00:25:16.18\00:25:19.25 them talk, especially at night in the dorm or 00:25:19.35\00:25:21.42 on our way back from our projects-and they 00:25:21.55\00:25:24.09 recognize, first of all, that they are blessed 00:25:24.19\00:25:26.49 beyond measure-that they have more than 00:25:26.55\00:25:29.72 what they sometimes don't realize. I think, 00:25:29.82\00:25:35.46 also, like yesterday they realize that, "Oh, 00:25:35.56\00:25:38.30 we may be different geographically, we 00:25:38.40\00:25:41.00 may be different economically, but we are kind of the same." 00:25:41.10\00:25:44.64 - They should experience this. I mean, you take 00:25:45.44\00:25:48.68 for granted the life that you're living, and 00:25:48.78\00:25:51.31 you never know that unless you expose yourself 00:25:51.41\00:25:54.65 to other continents, countries, other peoples, 00:25:54.75\00:25:58.02 other cultures, you'll never know that you 00:25:58.12\00:26:00.89 have a great life and that others have a 00:26:00.99\00:26:05.69 great life, too, but they just do it on a lot less. 00:26:05.79\00:26:08.53 I would really strongly say that as many young 00:26:08.63\00:26:11.77 people that hear this and know about this, 00:26:11.87\00:26:14.50 they should really try to come and be a part 00:26:14.60\00:26:16.57 of it, 'cause there is so much work to be done 00:26:16.67\00:26:18.77 and there's so many hands that can be 00:26:18.87\00:26:21.01 involved in this work. And the reward, you 00:26:21.08\00:26:26.92 may not see until we get to heaven. - Every 00:26:27.02\00:26:30.65 parent should send their teen on an Ultimate Workout. 00:26:30.69\00:26:33.86 First of all, no joke. Teens are really 00:26:33.96\00:26:35.66 connecting with Christ through service. We're 00:26:35.76\00:26:39.16 just there as the adults to guide them and mentor 00:26:39.23\00:26:41.80 them, but they pretty much plan and execute 00:26:41.90\00:26:44.80 everything. You want your child to really 00:26:44.90\00:26:47.97 connect while there's- you want your team 00:26:48.07\00:26:49.97 to really get to know God through service. 00:26:50.07\00:26:52.77 It's the Ultimate Workout. [singing] 00:26:52.87\00:26:56.14 - You experience the hard work, the grit- 00:26:56.24\00:26:58.68 and the growth that you experience. It's something 00:26:59.18\00:27:04.45 that you can't even put a price on. Being able 00:27:04.55\00:27:07.26 to experience different cultures, different 00:27:07.36\00:27:09.86 people, different points of view-it's priceless. 00:27:09.96\00:27:14.73 - I feel like everyone should have this 00:27:15.96\00:27:18.27 experience. Before I came here, I was kind 00:27:18.40\00:27:21.14 of nervous. I was like, "I don't know if I would 00:27:21.24\00:27:22.84 be able to make friends, I don't know how it's 00:27:22.90\00:27:24.47 going to be... I'm scared about the squatty potties." 00:27:24.57\00:27:27.01 But, you know, I feel like everyone should 00:27:27.11\00:27:29.41 be able to get out of their comfort zone and 00:27:29.51\00:27:32.41 to be put into a place you're not familiar with, 00:27:32.55\00:27:35.65 with people you're not familiar with, and just to 00:27:35.75\00:27:38.59 learn to adapt and to love and to grow with 00:27:38.65\00:27:42.06 people you don't know. And I think everyone 00:27:42.12\00:27:43.89 should be able to go on this trip. I really think 00:27:43.96\00:27:47.00 it's amazing, and it's probably the best thing 00:27:47.06\00:27:48.53 that's ever happened in my life. 00:27:48.66\00:27:51.33
