- Hi. I'm Hilary Marcias with the Maranatha Minute. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 It's already November. And as we enter the 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.13 holiday season, we're also kicking off our annual Giving 00:00:05.23\00:00:08.20 Tuesday campaign. Giving Tuesday is a global day 00:00:08.30\00:00:11.67 of giving, held on the first Tuesday after 00:00:11.77\00:00:13.78 Thanksgiving. And this year, Maranatha's goal 00:00:13.88\00:00:16.81 is to raise $100,000 for new classrooms 00:00:16.91\00:00:19.78 for the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center 00:00:19.88\00:00:22.45 in Kenya. The buildings will serve Maasai girls 00:00:22.55\00:00:25.45 who are rescued from female genital mutilation 00:00:25.55\00:00:27.89 and child marriage. The girls live and go to school 00:00:27.99\00:00:31.03 on campus. However, older students have to 00:00:31.13\00:00:33.80 attend secondary school at separate campuses, 00:00:33.90\00:00:36.40 which can be traumatic. So, Maranatha is expanding 00:00:36.50\00:00:39.53 the current campus to include high school classrooms. 00:00:39.63\00:00:42.74 You can help Maranatha raise money for this important 00:00:42.80\00:00:45.67 project. Make a change for a better future for 00:00:45.74\00:00:49.04 these young women. Start a Giving Tuesday campaign 00:00:49.14\00:00:51.71 using our fundraising website, or make a donation 00:00:51.81\00:00:54.52 now or on Giving Tuesday, December 3. Visit our 00:00:54.62\00:00:57.35 website for more information. 00:00:57.45\00:00:59.99 - Popular culture would have you believe that the 00:01:21.14\00:01:23.35 teenage years were a time to celebrate aimlessness, 00:01:23.45\00:01:26.41 wandering, or fool- hearted decisions. 00:01:26.48\00:01:29.22 But in this episode of Maranatha Mission Stories, 00:01:29.35\00:01:31.69 we're focusing on another side of youth-teens who 00:01:31.79\00:01:34.76 are breaking the mold by daring to serve and 00:01:34.86\00:01:37.59 connect with the world in meaningful ways. First, 00:01:37.69\00:01:42.60 in honor of Maranatha's 50th anniversary, we'll 00:01:42.70\00:01:45.20 take a look at a program that's been bringing teenagers 00:01:45.33\00:01:47.60 closer to Christ for nearly 30 years. 00:01:47.67\00:01:50.81 In the 1980s, the United States witnessed a seismic 00:02:06.15\00:02:09.79 cultural shift as the nation emerged from the turmoil 00:02:09.89\00:02:13.09 of the previous decade. In response to the 00:02:13.16\00:02:18.03 counterculture movement of the '70s,?Americans 00:02:18.13\00:02:20.97 began embracing monetary and professional success. 00:02:21.07\00:02:24.17 The yuppie became somewhat of an icon of the '80s 00:02:27.91\00:02:30.75 symbolizing wealth, status, and greed. 00:02:30.81\00:02:34.48 On the popular culture front, teenagers witnessed 00:02:38.12\00:02:40.66 the emergence of new technology, a new health 00:02:40.76\00:02:44.79 crisis, and a new type of television. The pop 00:02:44.89\00:02:50.97 culture machine was everywhere. It was at 00:02:51.03\00:02:55.57 the tail end of this decade that Maranatha 00:02:55.67\00:02:57.84 Volunteers International came upon a new program 00:02:57.94\00:03:00.84 aimed at the very young people who were being 00:03:00.94\00:03:03.45 consumed by this lifestyle. It was an antidote to the 00:03:03.55\00:03:07.08 times and the spiritual revelation for teens. 00:03:07.18\00:03:11.25 Insight was a youth magazine published by 00:03:12.09\00:03:14.46 the Seventh-day Adventist Church. One day while at 00:03:14.56\00:03:17.69 the gym with a friend, the editor had an idea. 00:03:17.76\00:03:20.96 - He was working it out with a friend at a 00:03:21.06\00:03:22.80 convention. They said, "This is what we do for 00:03:22.86\00:03:25.07 our physical bodies. What can we do for our 00:03:25.17\00:03:26.87 spiritual growth?" And so, they decided that the 00:03:26.94\00:03:30.71 way that young people can work out is through 00:03:30.81\00:03:34.44 service. - Insight came up with the idea of a 00:03:34.54\00:03:38.21 teens-only mission experience. And in 1990, 00:03:38.28\00:03:41.35 they launched what was named, "The Trip". 00:03:41.45\00:03:44.59 The next year, Inside asked Maranatha to 00:03:52.19\00:03:55.16 coordinate the effort, and they would market the 00:03:55.26\00:03:57.47 project in their magazine. The trip was reborn as 00:03:57.57\00:04:00.97 The Ultimate Workout, and 19 volunteers headed 00:04:01.07\00:04:04.84 to Honduras. 00:04:04.94\00:04:06.54 From then on, the program steadily grew, adding a 00:04:13.08\00:04:15.92 handful of people at a time. By the time 00:04:15.98\00:04:19.19 Steve Case got involved in 1993, the number of 00:04:19.25\00:04:22.52 participants had increased, and the workload was 00:04:22.59\00:04:25.23 outgrowing the small team at Maranatha. 00:04:25.29\00:04:27.50 Steve, a youth pastor, was among those who 00:04:29.53\00:04:32.27 helped to coordinate the effort at home and abroad. 00:04:32.33\00:04:34.67 - You had to talk with every parent of every 00:04:35.97\00:04:38.07 kid, and it just simply took too much time. 00:04:38.17\00:04:41.04 It was too costly for Maranatha to do it. 00:04:41.14\00:04:43.21 So, the lead into it just was so time-consuming. 00:04:43.28\00:04:45.95 So, I was told, "Steve, you're going to go on 00:04:46.08\00:04:49.42 this Ultimate Workout. And just so you know, 00:04:49.52\00:04:52.29 this is the last one. We just can't afford it." 00:04:52.35\00:04:56.66 - Steve understood the reasoning. But when he 00:04:57.43\00:04:59.79 returned from the project, he was convinced otherwise. 00:04:59.89\00:05:03.30 The positive impact on the participants was too 00:05:03.73\00:05:06.43 powerful to give up. - I came back and had 00:05:06.53\00:05:09.50 a very serious conversation with the president of 00:05:09.57\00:05:12.57 Maranatha Volunteers International in his office, 00:05:12.64\00:05:15.61 and I spoke to him not as a friend but this was a 00:05:15.74\00:05:18.91 professional conversation. I let him know in no 00:05:19.01\00:05:22.08 uncertain terms that this had to continue. 00:05:22.22\00:05:25.85 I understood that I was supposed to stop it; but 00:05:25.92\00:05:30.43 as the president of Maranatha, Don Noble, "You must keep 00:05:31.39\00:05:34.86 this going. In fact, if you don't, you'll have 00:05:34.96\00:05:37.33 to quit calling yourself a Christian." I was pretty 00:05:37.47\00:05:42.10 worked up. - Steve laughs at this memory, but his 00:05:42.24\00:05:45.54 impassioned plea was effective. Maranatha 00:05:45.64\00:05:48.24 decided to continue running Ultimate Workout. And 00:05:48.34\00:05:51.45 as they say, the rest was history. Maranatha 00:05:51.55\00:05:56.35 hired Steve to be the program director for 00:05:56.42\00:05:58.62 The Ultimate Workout, and he kept the role 00:05:58.72\00:06:00.76 for the next 20 years, using his background in 00:06:00.86\00:06:03.69 youth ministry to hone a spiritually powerful 00:06:03.83\00:06:06.63 project for teens with three core components. 00:06:06.73\00:06:10.27 - #1) It seeks to have a spiritually transforming 00:06:11.13\00:06:13.97 experience for the participants. That's 00:06:14.07\00:06:17.11 a high order, and we go for it. 00:06:17.21\00:06:19.71 [applause and cheering] 00:06:25.28\00:06:29.28 #2 is quality-constructed buildings, which is a 00:06:29.48\00:06:33.46 challenge when you have unskilled teenagers. So 00:06:33.52\00:06:36.83 you have to have some key leaders who are 00:06:36.89\00:06:38.23 willing to mentor and teach. 00:06:38.26\00:06:40.10 And #3 is to supplement what the church is 00:06:46.17\00:06:48.94 already doing to spread the gospel in whatever 00:06:49.04\00:06:50.74 location we're in. - As a result, volunteers 00:06:50.84\00:06:54.74 return year after year transformed. - It's life- 00:06:54.81\00:07:00.48 changing experience that I want to have every 00:07:00.58\00:07:04.49 year. I come back and I feel like I'm revived 00:07:04.59\00:07:08.79 all over again. - Ultimate Workout is not just about 00:07:08.89\00:07:12.43 going to a different place and seeing new 00:07:12.53\00:07:14.40 things; it's about connecting with other 00:07:14.46\00:07:16.77 people, doing the Lord's work... And you're really 00:07:16.87\00:07:22.20 going on a journey for yourself, looking inside 00:07:22.37\00:07:24.71 yourself... - Before my Ultimate Workout 00:07:24.81\00:07:27.51 experience, I felt distant from God; and after the 00:07:27.61\00:07:32.18 trip, it was just a completely different 00:07:32.31\00:07:33.78 feeling in me and I felt like a better person 00:07:33.88\00:07:36.85 after it. I felt like I made a difference in 00:07:36.95\00:07:40.59 someone's life, and it was a really good feeling 00:07:40.69\00:07:43.93 and it really helped me to connect with God. 00:07:44.03\00:07:47.06 - Before this trip, I never really pray on my own. 00:07:51.23\00:07:53.03 Before we ate as a family, we would pray and thank 00:07:53.54\00:07:57.91 Him for the food. But when I woke up, 00:07:58.01\00:08:00.81 I never thanked Him for waking me up. Or when I 00:08:00.91\00:08:03.18 went to bed, I never thanked Him for keeping 00:08:03.28\00:08:06.25 me alive throughout the day and keeping me safe. 00:08:06.35\00:08:08.82 When I go home, I know I'm gonna change some 00:08:08.92\00:08:11.52 things in my family- connecting with Christ 00:08:11.65\00:08:16.62 and praying. - Today, Ultimate Workout is 00:08:16.73\00:08:20.16 Maranatha's biggest project, and the trip draws anywhere 00:08:20.26\00:08:23.67 from 100 to 200 volunteers each year. There have 00:08:23.73\00:08:27.70 been more than 3,900 volunteer experiences 00:08:27.77\00:08:31.07 in the past three decades. While most years the 00:08:31.17\00:08:34.94 projects are in Latin America, twice Ultimate 00:08:35.04\00:08:38.31 Workout landed in the United States. 00:08:38.41\00:08:40.52 Twice, they headed to India. 00:08:43.79\00:08:45.59 And this year, Ultimate Workout went to Africa 00:08:48.82\00:08:51.09 for the first time. Nearly three decades 00:08:51.23\00:08:56.67 since the launch, interest in Ultimate Workout shows 00:08:56.77\00:08:59.63 no signs of slowing down. - Here's my analysis of 00:08:59.80\00:09:05.14 why Ultimate Workout is so potent. It's normal 00:09:05.24\00:09:08.31 in adolescent development to find out what your 00:09:08.41\00:09:11.41 identity is. That's just part of normal human 00:09:11.51\00:09:14.25 development. And the way you find out what 00:09:14.38\00:09:16.95 it is is you compare it with what it has been. 00:09:17.05\00:09:19.45 You're coming of age, and you start to push 00:09:19.59\00:09:21.82 back against the powers that are there-namely 00:09:21.92\00:09:24.23 your parents or other authority structures. 00:09:24.36\00:09:26.36 If you go on another project, say with your 00:09:26.66\00:09:28.26 congregation, with your school, with your family, 00:09:28.36\00:09:31.73 those people know you- and still has a high impact, 00:09:31.83\00:09:35.64 but you don't have that brand new start. You know, 00:09:35.74\00:09:38.21 the Bible says if anyone is in Christ, they are a 00:09:38.34\00:09:40.91 new creation, or a new creature. The old is gone; 00:09:41.01\00:09:45.21 a new life has begun. Well, that truly happens 00:09:45.31\00:09:48.25 on Ultimate Workout, and you see it, and it's 00:09:48.38\00:09:51.75 just truly amazing. - You come here as a stranger. 00:09:51.85\00:09:55.99 You come here as just a new person, a new 00:09:56.02\00:09:58.16 face, and you get to share that story and 00:09:58.26\00:10:02.50 you get to grow in just two weeks. I mean, it's 00:10:02.60\00:10:08.14 incredible how much you grow. - It's just the connection 00:10:08.24\00:10:13.64 with God and the connection that you get to have with 00:10:13.78\00:10:17.18 everybody here. It's a breath of fresh air with 00:10:17.28\00:10:19.41 His... You get to be away from all the distractions, 00:10:19.51\00:10:22.52 everything that's keeping you back from having 00:10:24.09\00:10:25.65 a relationship with God, and you're in a different 00:10:25.75\00:10:27.19 country that we don't know...and having that 00:10:27.29\00:10:30.93 relationship is just amazing. - When we 00:10:31.03\00:10:35.16 come back, we meet another group of teens who are 00:10:35.26\00:10:37.33 serving the mission field in a different way-from home. 00:10:37.43\00:10:40.37 - These women spend 560 minutes a day fetching 00:11:02.46\00:11:06.06 water. Water is life... ...but your life shouldn't 00:11:06.19\00:11:14.20 revolve around water. 00:11:14.30\00:11:16.30 We're raising money for water wells. Make a donation. 00:11:21.74\00:11:26.38 Give women the gift of time, health, family. 00:11:30.45\00:11:37.49 Sponsor a well. Give water; give life. 00:11:40.20\00:11:46.00 - For most of us watching, clean water is a given- 00:11:53.27\00:11:55.94 a commodity taken for granted as it pours from 00:11:56.04\00:11:58.65 our faucets with reckless abandon...yet there are 00:11:58.75\00:12:02.42 many parts of the world where water of any kind 00:12:02.55\00:12:05.02 is a rare gift. In a privileged enclave of 00:12:05.12\00:12:08.36 southern California, a group of girls heard 00:12:08.49\00:12:10.83 about this water crisis. Specifically, they learned 00:12:10.93\00:12:13.56 of the plight of women in Kenya who have to 00:12:13.66\00:12:15.43 walk miles for clean water. So, they decided 00:12:15.56\00:12:18.57 to do something by walking a mile or two in their shoes. 00:12:18.67\00:12:22.44 This is Del Mar Mesa, an attractive development 00:12:30.88\00:12:33.52 in the suburbs of San Diego. Here, long before 00:12:33.62\00:12:41.06 the neighborhood developed and right in its heart, is 00:12:41.16\00:12:43.99 Hooterville Estates. The new developers 00:12:44.09\00:12:47.60 wanted to buy the property but were turned away. 00:12:47.70\00:12:50.37 Hooterville remains. Its eclectic presence announcing 00:12:51.23\00:12:55.07 itself at the entrance. The seven-acre ranch 00:12:55.20\00:13:01.44 has become beloved by the neighbors-especially 00:13:01.54\00:13:03.81 those with children. Preserving a time and 00:13:03.88\00:13:08.38 spirit that suburbs often erode, Hooterville's owners 00:13:08.48\00:13:11.72 and residents, Elizabeth and Mike Rabbit, nurture a way 00:13:11.82\00:13:15.72 of life that once was common on these hillsides. 00:13:15.86\00:13:18.49 Today, however...we haven't come for the eggs. 00:13:21.43\00:13:24.17 (Elizabeth): What are you guys doing? 00:13:25.83\00:13:27.80 - Elizabeth has made the ranch the starting place 00:13:29.50\00:13:31.64 of the First Annual FAV and Friends Walk 00:13:31.74\00:13:33.74 for Water. The trick... is keeping the goats 00:13:33.88\00:13:37.45 from eating the sign. 00:13:37.55\00:13:38.91 But how did Elizabeth Rabbit and Hooterville 00:13:45.29\00:13:47.49 become the vortex of the FAV and Friends Walk for 00:13:47.62\00:13:49.96 Water? 00:13:50.06\00:13:51.39 Elizabeth first learned of the water crisis in 00:13:57.77\00:13:59.83 Africa while volunteering on mission trips with Maranatha. 00:13:59.93\00:14:03.10 Having seen the life-changing effects a well brings to 00:14:04.67\00:14:07.61 communities there, Elizabeth freely shared 00:14:07.71\00:14:10.48 her passion for water wells with her neighbors 00:14:10.58\00:14:12.91 back at home. This included Mia Goldman and Emma Reeves, 00:14:12.98\00:14:19.05 two young women who have known Elizabeth since they 00:14:19.15\00:14:21.49 were little kids. - Miss Elizabeth has always 00:14:21.56\00:14:25.09 been kind of this neighbor that I was kind of... Growing 00:14:25.16\00:14:29.26 up, I've lived here since I was 2, and I've always 00:14:29.33\00:14:32.63 looked in a store, "Oh my gosh, that farm is 00:14:32.73\00:14:34.94 amazing! I wonder who lives there." And finally, 00:14:35.04\00:14:37.51 I got to meet this amazing woman, Elizabeth, who's 00:14:37.61\00:14:40.64 kind of just this creative person, does what she 00:14:40.74\00:14:44.18 wants, builds her own things, raises horses, 00:14:44.28\00:14:47.92 and she's kind of just been a role model to 00:14:48.02\00:14:50.25 me probably since I was a little girl, and I've 00:14:50.32\00:14:53.02 always kind of wanted to be like her. - I met 00:14:53.12\00:14:55.69 Elizabeth from when I was 3 when we moved 00:14:55.79\00:14:59.16 here. I always looked up to her as just seeing 00:14:59.26\00:15:02.06 this crazy place with having all these horses 00:15:02.16\00:15:05.03 and having me be into horses, it really just made 00:15:05.13\00:15:07.87 me- she just inspired me. And by chance and 00:15:07.97\00:15:11.47 fate, I was so lucky to be able to keep my horses 00:15:11.57\00:15:13.84 here. And to think, over time, our families have 00:15:13.94\00:15:16.14 bonded, and we really just spend a lot of time 00:15:16.24\00:15:18.78 together. - My girls in this neighborhood that 00:15:18.88\00:15:21.92 I've... They've been coming to my ranch 00:15:21.98\00:15:25.25 here since they were 4, 5, 6 years old. They 00:15:25.35\00:15:29.36 were tiny, and they hang out here. We were painting, 00:15:29.46\00:15:33.23 and they were talking about going to college, 00:15:33.33\00:15:35.60 and they knew I had been to Africa, and they were 00:15:35.70\00:15:37.97 asking me questions about what I learned-about what 00:15:38.07\00:15:42.10 it was like. And they started, just, like, brainstorming, 00:15:42.20\00:15:45.27 and I don't know, really, whose idea it was. And 00:15:45.37\00:15:47.71 then they said, "Well, we could do this," and 00:15:47.81\00:15:49.14 "We could do that," and they said, "Well, we have 00:15:49.18\00:15:51.58 this club, Female Athlete Volunteers, and we have 00:15:51.71\00:15:54.88 to find projects for them in order to get 00:15:54.98\00:15:57.92 points, and the club has to sponsor so many events 00:15:58.05\00:16:01.72 a year. And so, that's how it started. - FAV 00:16:01.82\00:16:07.70 is Female Athlete Volunteers, and it is an amazing group 00:16:07.80\00:16:11.73 of young women, especially in San Diego. It's got 00:16:11.83\00:16:16.17 about 200+ members now, and it's something I've 00:16:16.24\00:16:19.17 been a part of for probably six years now. We kind of 00:16:19.27\00:16:24.51 go around San Diego and participate in any volunteering 00:16:24.58\00:16:28.18 events. This event, especially, was made for 00:16:28.28\00:16:32.05 FAV which I think was really cool and unique. 00:16:32.15\00:16:34.89 - And so, Emma and me are really... You took the 00:16:34.99\00:16:37.79 bull by the horns, and they contacted all their 00:16:37.89\00:16:40.00 friends and all the club members, and 00:16:40.10\00:16:42.00 that's why we called it Female Athlete Volunteer 00:16:42.06\00:16:44.07 and Friends, because there were several 00:16:44.17\00:16:45.83 people who wanted to be involved that weren't 00:16:45.93\00:16:47.70 in the club. 00:16:47.84\00:16:49.44 - The idea was to raise money to drill and set 00:16:52.41\00:16:54.68 a water well for a community in Kenya. Elizabeth was one 00:16:54.78\00:16:58.65 of 26 Maranatha volunteers who built a dormitory at 00:16:58.78\00:17:01.78 a school there. The Maranatha well-drilling team was there, 00:17:01.88\00:17:10.49 too. They discovered a source for water, and 00:17:10.59\00:17:15.96 it was one of the most prolific water wells they 00:17:16.06\00:17:18.47 had drilled in the country. Elizabeth saw an opportunity 00:17:18.60\00:17:24.51 to encourage Emma and Mia back home. - Emma 00:17:24.64\00:17:27.98 Reeves and Mia Goldman and all the female athletes... 00:17:28.08\00:17:31.08 - Elizabeth sent us some clips of her experience in 00:17:31.18\00:17:33.72 Africa. 00:17:33.78\00:17:35.78 - Right after she sent me those videos, I kind 00:17:48.76\00:17:51.23 of was tearing up because they were talking to me and 00:17:51.30\00:17:54.60 Mia, the girls in Africa, and I was kind of like... 00:17:54.70\00:17:57.57 Wow, this is real. This is really touching, and 00:17:57.71\00:18:02.04 this is actually affecting people in Africa. - This 00:18:02.14\00:18:06.08 specific fundraiser, I really wanted to help, 00:18:06.18\00:18:08.28 because these girls who are my age, girls from 00:18:08.35\00:18:10.65 5 and up to 50, they all go and they just walk 00:18:10.75\00:18:17.53 four or five miles a day twice a day carrying 00:18:17.63\00:18:21.73 six-gallon buckets of water, and it's just 00:18:21.86\00:18:25.70 crazy... I think that they could really be 00:18:25.80\00:18:28.14 spending a lot of this time gaining education 00:18:28.24\00:18:31.04 and getting social skills with their friends, and 00:18:31.17\00:18:33.98 I really just want to help them gain these 00:18:34.08\00:18:36.34 kinds of skills that could help them be successful 00:18:36.41\00:18:38.48 later in life. - The goal the group set for themselves- 00:18:38.58\00:18:43.59 $15,000-the median cost of drilling and setting a 00:18:43.72\00:18:47.92 well in Kenya. The event they created to bring 00:18:48.02\00:18:52.39 attention to the need- walking a mile to a local 00:18:52.49\00:18:54.96 pond to collect water in buckets and carry the 00:18:55.06\00:18:58.47 water back to Hooterville where it could be symbolically 00:18:58.57\00:19:01.04 collected. - Hi. I'm Mia Goldman. - And I'm Emma 00:19:01.17\00:19:06.74 Reeves. - And we're here in Carmel Valley doing our 00:19:06.81\00:19:08.84 First Annual Walk for Water. We're going... 00:19:08.94\00:19:11.01 - The three use Maranatha's online fundraising platform 00:19:11.11\00:19:13.72 to manage donations. They would meet regularly 00:19:13.85\00:19:16.99 to organize, plan, and prep materials. Emma and Mia's 00:19:17.09\00:19:21.09 friends, Morgan and Megan, also joined the leadership 00:19:21.19\00:19:23.89 team. - We just do Megan's, the one who lived across 00:19:23.99\00:19:28.33 the street from us, and we were like, "Remember 00:19:28.43\00:19:30.50 when she was little-she used to make so many of these 00:19:30.60\00:19:32.37 little arts & crafts," and we were just like, "I wonder 00:19:32.47\00:19:34.20 if she's still into it." And she was. She was 00:19:34.30\00:19:36.30 really willing to come over and help us. And 00:19:36.44\00:19:38.97 one day, she just decided to bring Morgan, and she 00:19:39.11\00:19:41.74 was such a helpful part of the team. I think we 00:19:41.84\00:19:44.15 work together so well and we just made it 00:19:44.25\00:19:46.41 happen. - All of the girls put social media 00:19:46.48\00:19:49.32 to work for them. - Emma drafted an email and she 00:19:49.42\00:19:52.55 sent it out to everyone. I went around my school 00:19:52.65\00:19:55.09 and through a lot of social media I posted it 00:19:55.16\00:19:58.63 everywhere I could. I made highlights on my 00:19:58.73\00:20:00.96 Instagram, I made sure to tell all my friends to 00:20:01.03\00:20:03.83 go check out my link and I'd send it to them, 00:20:03.93\00:20:06.23 and I had my dad send it to all of his friends, 00:20:06.33\00:20:09.44 and I really just made sure that everyone knew 00:20:09.57\00:20:12.44 about this, because it's really important to me. 00:20:12.57\00:20:15.21 - Local and regional press also took note 00:20:16.14\00:20:18.25 of Walk for Water. The day of the event, they, 00:20:18.35\00:20:22.12 volunteers, their friends, and even a group of 1st 00:20:22.25\00:20:24.92 graders arrived, ready to help. And, of course, 00:20:25.02\00:20:29.12 many moms ready to lend their support. - I tried to 00:20:29.22\00:20:33.53 make cookies. The first batch burned; the second 00:20:33.60\00:20:35.16 batch made it. - Okay! - It smells like burnt cookies 00:20:35.26\00:20:38.50 at my house now. - That's good. That's a good thing. 00:20:38.60\00:20:41.34 - Each girl received a handmade name tag 00:20:42.34\00:20:44.44 and a bracelet that Elizabeth brought home 00:20:44.54\00:20:47.24 from Africa. They also were given a black-and- 00:20:47.34\00:20:52.35 red checkered cloth they could use as a sash or 00:20:52.45\00:20:54.82 bandana. In honor of the blankets that are 00:20:54.92\00:20:57.12 commonly used during the cool Kenyan winters, 00:20:57.22\00:20:59.39 every girl received a bucket. The little ones, 00:20:59.49\00:21:03.06 gallon buckets. The bigger girls, two- to 00:21:03.16\00:21:05.66 five-gallon buckets. Without much fanfare, 00:21:05.79\00:21:09.46 they were off. 00:21:09.56\00:21:11.00 - I'll put it on my head. - Okay you put it anywhere, honey. 00:21:19.77\00:21:22.38 - So, what we're trying to do is represent what 00:21:22.48\00:21:25.31 African women do on a day-to-day basis and 00:21:25.45\00:21:28.92 taking the fact that they have to travel several 00:21:29.05\00:21:33.32 miles, several hours, to just get water-and 00:21:33.39\00:21:37.43 it's not even clean water, so we're trying to replicate 00:21:37.53\00:21:40.30 that by taking our own buckets and getting a 00:21:40.40\00:21:44.13 bunch of ladies in our community from, like, 00:21:44.23\00:21:46.63 elementary school to high school and kind of 00:21:46.74\00:21:49.50 show them what they go through every day. - I've 00:21:49.60\00:21:52.07 been with these kids since they were single-digit 00:21:52.17\00:21:54.18 age. They still call me Miss Elizabeth, they still 00:21:54.24\00:21:57.85 say they want to be like me when they grow up... 00:21:57.95\00:21:59.85 I mean, what could make you feel better? And unless 00:21:59.95\00:22:04.55 you're willing to give and to share and to 00:22:04.65\00:22:06.72 invest in the greater community... And one of 00:22:06.79\00:22:10.73 the things that I've been... I think I've been trying to teach 00:22:10.83\00:22:14.86 all of them is that even though we are just one 00:22:14.96\00:22:18.97 person, if you think about it, we're more like 00:22:19.07\00:22:22.70 a beehive. We don't feel like a beehive, but we're 00:22:22.80\00:22:24.61 all working together. We're a huge community. 00:22:24.71\00:22:27.48 And the idea of them being able to reach all 00:22:27.58\00:22:30.31 the way around the world to Africa to people that they 00:22:30.45\00:22:34.58 don't know and that they'll never meet, 00:22:34.68\00:22:36.69 to say, "We'd like to make a difference in 00:22:37.49\00:22:39.82 your lives," is a way for them to be part 00:22:39.92\00:22:42.52 of that bigger beehive and to be part of the 00:22:42.59\00:22:46.46 community. 00:22:46.59\00:22:47.93 - Carrying that water was kind of a challenge, 00:23:01.84\00:23:04.95 and I wasn't even carrying that much water. I 00:23:05.05\00:23:07.05 couldn't believe how difficult it would be for 00:23:07.18\00:23:09.88 girls, little girls, to travel hours with 00:23:09.98\00:23:14.59 that much water every day. It would be exhausting. 00:23:14.69\00:23:18.76 - It's so amazing. It's just such an amazing 00:23:21.20\00:23:24.13 feeling to know that I can be giving back to 00:23:24.27\00:23:26.97 other people, because living in this bubble's 00:23:27.07\00:23:29.20 great, but I haven't been able to really experience 00:23:29.30\00:23:32.47 the outer world. I feel like seeing all of this and 00:23:32.61\00:23:37.05 doing all this research and just looking at all 00:23:37.15\00:23:40.25 of this is just so eye-opening. I just really want to give 00:23:40.35\00:23:43.69 back. And whenever I think of people who 00:23:43.79\00:23:45.55 just have these First World problems, I'm just like, 00:23:45.65\00:23:48.89 "Well, I mean, it could be worse." I'm just so 00:23:48.99\00:23:53.46 happy that I can give back. It just makes me 00:23:53.53\00:23:55.73 feel so amazing that my peers on the other 00:23:55.83\00:23:57.87 half side of the world can have a chance of living a 00:23:57.97\00:24:01.10 normal lifestyle. - After the walk, the girls celebrated 00:24:01.24\00:24:06.11 with pizza. - So, even though girls my age 00:24:06.27\00:24:09.84 may think that they can't make a difference in the 00:24:09.98\00:24:11.71 world, if you grab a couple of your friends together 00:24:11.81\00:24:14.22 and send out a couple emails, it will just make 00:24:14.32\00:24:16.92 a world of change, because we've raised over $11,000- 00:24:17.02\00:24:20.86 just the four of us- and it's hopefully gonna 00:24:20.96\00:24:25.09 make a well for a whole village. - As of today, 00:24:25.19\00:24:29.50 Walk for Water has raised $15,585. A well will be 00:24:30.30\00:24:37.81 drilled and a pump placed in a village in Kenya. The 00:24:37.91\00:24:43.51 experience of fundraising for wells in Africa inspired 00:24:43.61\00:24:46.38 Mia to take her involvement a step further. A couple months 00:24:46.45\00:24:49.75 after the event, Mia, her mom, and her brother 00:24:49.85\00:24:52.25 traveled to Kenya to meet firsthand the people to whom 00:24:52.35\00:24:55.32 Maranatha is reaching out. They volunteered at the Gucha 00:24:55.42\00:25:00.53 School in Kisii, building a much-needed classroom. 00:25:00.63\00:25:03.67 It's an experience that's sure to ignite more involvement 00:25:04.50\00:25:07.20 from Mia. - We live in a bubble! We're in San 00:25:07.30\00:25:13.64 Diego and beautiful homes. We wake up 00:25:13.78\00:25:16.75 every morning, and just in paradise. And you think 00:25:16.85\00:25:22.38 about how lucky we are. I mean, doesn't that make 00:25:22.48\00:25:26.96 us responsible for sharing our luck and sharing our 00:25:27.06\00:25:30.99 wealth with others? I mean, if you imagine 00:25:31.09\00:25:33.26 that a world where nobody shared and if nobody was 00:25:33.36\00:25:38.20 willing to give back- if we all just kept it 00:25:38.30\00:25:41.90 to ourselves. I mean, we really depend on 00:25:42.00\00:25:44.44 people and their generosity and their need to share to 00:25:44.54\00:25:51.05 make the world a better place and to help somebody. 00:25:51.15\00:25:54.22 - Along with Kenya, Maranatha is drilling 00:26:08.40\00:26:10.17 wells in Zambia, India, and Brazil. Help us bring 00:26:10.30\00:26:13.47 clean water to communities in need by making a donation. 00:26:13.57\00:26:17.14 Go to maranatha.org to give today. 00:26:17.27\00:26:20.08 - Get a jumpstart on the New Year by registering 00:26:31.79\00:26:34.29 for a mission trip to Côte d'Ivoire. Passion, creativity, and 00:27:36.99\00:27:41.09 gumption are the only ingredients necessary 00:27:41.19\00:27:43.76 to make a change-because whether you're nine or 90, 00:27:43.83\00:27:47.40 God sees potential in all of us, and we are 00:27:47.50\00:27:50.73 all His messengers of grace. 00:27:50.83\00:27:54.40
