the village years ago

to care for her disabled father.

Now, she makes a meager living
by traveling into the forest,

cutting down trees
and making charcoal.

Her situation is not ideal.

are not options due to drought,

We suffer a lot here

because the water is very deep.

about spreading God's
love to their neighbors.

The passion this
group has for sharing Christ

is something you'll
find all over the country.

Because of this,

Zambia is an area of the world

with one of the
largest Adventist memberships.

What motivates them to
become part of the church

is actually the
knowledge that they receive

that Jesus loves them

even before them
decided to love Jesus.

But then He was the one
who first decided to love them.

And so when they
realize that actually

we have someone who loves
us, or who loved us before,

then they are
motivated to join the church.

This rapidly growing
church creates challenges.

Eddie Himoonde is the pastor
of the Lwendge congregation,

one of the many groups

he is responsible for.

In my district, I
have 35 organized churches,

and the area is
about 200 kilometers apart.

Yes, the whole district
membership is about 11,260.

Caring for more
than 11,000 members

is very demanding.

Visiting the
numerous churches in his area

is a difficult endeavor,

especially since Pastor Himoonde

doesn't have access to
reliable transportation.

Sometimes I take
maybe a week or two weeks,

just walking to
the furthest church,

because I don't have a
car, I don't have a motorbike,

And sometimes
members, sometimes who agree,

they come and pick me
up on their motorcycle.

They cycle me to that church.

visits few and far between.

smaller churches again,

which also need my attention.

it's a challenge.

So what helps me basically
is to train the laymen.

Laymen are well trained,

even if I'm not there,

carry on with activities.

And then they just
give me the reports.

Unless there is something

The challenge that I face

when such incidents
happened where we evangelize,

maybe public campaign,

then there
people give themselves.

But then when they
come to the actual church,

they find that actually

where we are
worshiping is not conducive.

There are no seats,

they are
worshipping under the tree

or maybe under the grass,

then it becomes a
challenge for them to stay on.

They feel like,

they cannot really
stay on in this church.

They need a better structure.

We have some that
actually leave this place

to go and worship in
some far distant church

because there they
have at least a structure

they have built.

But here they feel like,

"No. We cannot worship
our God in this scenario."

The challenges
Pastor Himoonde faces

are echoed all across Zambia.

There just
aren't enough churches.

From 2009 to 2015,

Maranatha responded to a request

from the
Adventist Church in Zambia

and built more than 300 churches

all over the country.

Since then,

Adventist membership in Zambia

has grown to more
than 1.2 million people.

But the rapid growth means

there are still congregations

without proper
places to worship.

In 2018 Maranatha
returned to Zambia

to once again
build more churches.

This requires a dedicated
local construction team

that travels from town to town

bringing the hope of a church
to numerous congregations.

The process of building churches

includes two
visits from the crew.

here are secular schools

disturb most of the Adventists,

education in town.
