Hi, I'm Dustin Comm with the Maranatha Minute. 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.16 Maranatha recently wrapped its second project 00:00:03.20\00:00:05.37 in the town of Paradise, California. 00:00:05.40\00:00:07.77 The 2018 campfire devastated this community 00:00:07.80\00:00:11.01 and now many residents are living out of RVs 00:00:11.04\00:00:13.64 with no place to store their belongings. 00:00:13.68\00:00:16.21 In 2019, 00:00:16.24\00:00:17.58 Maranatha built 202 storage sheds for Paradise, 00:00:17.61\00:00:20.58 and this September followed it up with another 118. 00:00:20.62\00:00:24.95 The 185 volunteers on this project 00:00:24.99\00:00:27.22 faced extraordinary challenges 00:00:27.26\00:00:29.02 like extreme heat, nearby wildfire evacuations, 00:00:29.06\00:00:32.33 and hazardous air quality due to the smoke. 00:00:32.36\00:00:35.40 Work was even suspended for two days, 00:00:35.43\00:00:37.40 but volunteers worked hard when they could 00:00:37.43\00:00:39.37 to finish these urgently needed structures. 00:00:39.40\00:00:43.67 There are still many Paradise residents in need. 00:00:43.71\00:00:45.91 So a third shed project is set for October 26 00:00:45.94\00:00:49.34 to meet the high demand. 00:00:49.38\00:00:51.18 Watch inspiring videos about this project 00:00:51.21\00:00:53.42 and much more in our recent television special 00:00:53.45\00:00:56.15 Mission Maranatha. 00:00:56.18\00:00:57.52 You can watch anytime on our website. 00:00:57.55\00:00:59.52 More than 16 million people live in the country of Zambia. 00:01:51.01\00:01:53.98 Although this sub-Saharan country 00:01:57.35\00:01:58.81 is most famous for wonders such as Victoria Falls, 00:01:58.85\00:02:01.98 most people can be found living far off the beaten path. 00:02:02.02\00:02:05.42 Lilian lives in the village of Lwendge 00:02:20.67\00:02:22.47 with her husband and their 10 children. 00:02:22.50\00:02:25.31 A teacher by profession, 00:02:25.34\00:02:26.68 Lilian moved to the village years ago 00:02:26.71\00:02:28.28 to care for her disabled father. 00:02:28.31\00:02:32.28 Now, she makes a meager living by traveling into the forest, 00:02:32.31\00:02:35.82 cutting down trees and making charcoal. 00:02:35.85\00:02:38.99 Her situation is not ideal. 00:02:39.02\00:02:41.42 Farming or raising livestock are not options due to drought, 00:02:41.46\00:02:45.13 lack of financial resources and clean water. 00:02:45.16\00:02:47.46 In fact, the nearest well is a few kilometers away 00:02:50.50\00:02:53.20 and Lilian must make several trips a day 00:02:53.23\00:02:55.40 to provide water for her family. 00:02:55.44\00:02:59.61 We suffer a lot here 00:02:59.64\00:03:01.84 because the water is very deep. 00:03:01.88\00:03:07.52 You can't dig with hands. 00:03:07.55\00:03:10.05 It's very difficult, anyway. 00:03:10.09\00:03:12.89 But we have to do it because water is life. 00:03:12.92\00:03:16.52 Despite the difficulties, 00:03:25.10\00:03:26.60 Lilian has found strength 00:03:26.63\00:03:28.10 through her faith connection to God 00:03:28.14\00:03:30.01 and her local church. 00:03:30.04\00:03:32.01 It's important because I find it easy, 00:03:32.04\00:03:36.95 when I am in difficulties, 00:03:36.98\00:03:38.75 I find that my members are the ones to empower me. 00:03:38.78\00:03:42.48 And that encouraged me also to do so, 00:03:42.52\00:03:45.62 so that those who are in difficulties, 00:03:45.65\00:03:50.49 they can also be empowered as I was. 00:03:50.53\00:03:54.66 Lilian attends the Lwendge Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:03:54.70\00:03:57.83 This congregation started 15 years ago 00:03:57.87\00:04:00.17 and membership has grown to 78 members. 00:04:00.20\00:04:03.37 They are zealous 00:04:03.41\00:04:04.74 about spreading God's love to their neighbors. 00:04:04.77\00:04:08.01 The passion this group has for sharing Christ 00:04:08.04\00:04:10.31 is something you'll find all over the country. 00:04:10.35\00:04:12.38 Because of this, 00:04:12.41\00:04:13.75 Zambia is an area of the world 00:04:13.78\00:04:15.12 with one of the largest Adventist memberships. 00:04:15.15\00:04:18.72 What motivates them to become part of the church 00:04:18.75\00:04:21.12 is actually the knowledge that they receive 00:04:21.16\00:04:23.39 that Jesus loves them 00:04:23.43\00:04:25.33 even before them decided to love Jesus. 00:04:25.36\00:04:28.40 But then He was the one who first decided to love them. 00:04:28.43\00:04:31.37 And so when they realize that actually 00:04:31.40\00:04:33.37 we have someone who loves us, or who loved us before, 00:04:33.40\00:04:36.57 then they are motivated to join the church. 00:04:36.60\00:04:40.38 This rapidly growing church creates challenges. 00:04:40.41\00:04:43.58 Eddie Himoonde is the pastor of the Lwendge congregation, 00:04:43.61\00:04:47.15 but they are just one of the many groups 00:04:47.18\00:04:49.15 he is responsible for. 00:04:49.18\00:04:51.15 In my district, I have 35 organized churches, 00:04:51.19\00:04:54.92 and the area is about 200 kilometers apart. 00:04:54.96\00:04:59.96 Yes, the whole district membership is about 11,260. 00:05:00.00\00:05:05.00 Caring for more than 11,000 members 00:05:05.03\00:05:07.40 is very demanding. 00:05:07.44\00:05:08.77 Visiting the numerous churches in his area 00:05:08.80\00:05:10.91 is a difficult endeavor, 00:05:10.94\00:05:12.27 especially since Pastor Himoonde 00:05:12.31\00:05:13.88 doesn't have access to reliable transportation. 00:05:13.91\00:05:16.91 Sometimes I take maybe a week or two weeks, 00:05:16.95\00:05:20.32 just walking to the furthest church, 00:05:20.35\00:05:23.39 because I don't have a car, I don't have a motorbike, 00:05:23.42\00:05:26.49 I walk. 00:05:26.52\00:05:28.02 And sometimes members, sometimes who agree, 00:05:28.06\00:05:30.09 they come and pick me up on their motorcycle. 00:05:30.13\00:05:32.66 They cycle me to that church. 00:05:32.69\00:05:34.03 But if there's no one who's having even a bicycle 00:05:34.06\00:05:35.86 in that area, 00:05:35.90\00:05:37.23 then I have to walk through, I sleep on the way, 00:05:37.27\00:05:39.60 wake up in the morning and then continue moving 00:05:39.63\00:05:41.37 until I reach to that church. 00:05:41.40\00:05:43.47 Then I begin visiting the members now, 00:05:43.51\00:05:45.64 one on one, 00:05:45.67\00:05:47.01 praying with them, 00:05:47.04\00:05:48.38 seeing how they are doing and encouraging them. 00:05:48.41\00:05:50.51 Then I get back to my home again. 00:05:50.55\00:05:52.71 The large area makes visits few and far between. 00:05:52.75\00:05:57.19 In a year it's once. 00:05:57.22\00:05:59.42 Yes. 00:05:59.45\00:06:00.79 On average it's once because these 35 organized churches. 00:06:00.82\00:06:03.06 And then I still have smaller churches again, 00:06:03.09\00:06:05.26 about 20 of them, which also need my attention. 00:06:05.29\00:06:08.80 So if I visit this church here, 00:06:08.83\00:06:10.47 for me to rotate back to this church, 00:06:10.50\00:06:12.87 it's a challenge. 00:06:12.90\00:06:14.34 So what helps me basically is to train the laymen. 00:06:14.37\00:06:18.31 Laymen are well trained, 00:06:18.34\00:06:19.67 well organized that even if I'm not there, 00:06:19.71\00:06:21.84 they'll still carry on with activities. 00:06:21.88\00:06:23.24 And then they just give me the reports. 00:06:23.28\00:06:25.41 Unless there is something is so much challenging, 00:06:25.45\00:06:26.95 then they call me. 00:06:26.98\00:06:28.68 I quickly come to their aid. 00:06:28.72\00:06:30.55 Pastor Himoonde relies 00:06:36.76\00:06:38.09 on dedicated members like Lilian 00:06:38.13\00:06:39.76 to keep the churches alive and vibrant. 00:06:39.79\00:06:42.13 But one element many congregations 00:06:42.16\00:06:44.27 are still missing 00:06:44.30\00:06:45.63 is an adequate place to worship. 00:06:45.67\00:06:47.64 Although some groups 00:06:47.67\00:06:49.00 are able to build church structures, 00:06:49.04\00:06:50.71 many are left worshiping under trees 00:06:50.74\00:06:52.77 or in simple shelters 00:06:52.81\00:06:54.14 like the members have built in the Lwendge. 00:06:54.18\00:06:57.91 The challenge that I face 00:06:57.95\00:06:59.41 when such incidents happened where we evangelize, 00:06:59.45\00:07:03.32 maybe public campaign, 00:07:03.35\00:07:04.69 then there people give themselves. 00:07:04.72\00:07:06.49 But then when they come to the actual church, 00:07:06.52\00:07:08.99 they find that actually 00:07:09.02\00:07:10.36 where we are worshiping is not conducive. 00:07:10.39\00:07:15.06 There are no seats, 00:07:15.10\00:07:17.10 they are worshipping under the tree 00:07:17.13\00:07:18.47 or maybe under the grass, 00:07:18.50\00:07:20.24 then it becomes a challenge for them to stay on. 00:07:20.27\00:07:23.77 They feel like, 00:07:23.81\00:07:25.41 they cannot really stay on in this church. 00:07:25.44\00:07:28.24 They need a better structure. 00:07:28.28\00:07:29.91 We have some that actually leave this place 00:07:29.94\00:07:32.51 to go and worship in some far distant church 00:07:32.55\00:07:35.72 because there they have at least a structure 00:07:35.75\00:07:37.85 they have built. 00:07:37.89\00:07:39.22 But here they feel like, 00:07:39.25\00:07:40.92 "No. We cannot worship our God in this scenario." 00:07:40.96\00:07:44.39 The challenges Pastor Himoonde faces 00:07:44.43\00:07:46.29 are echoed all across Zambia. 00:07:46.33\00:07:48.46 There just aren't enough churches. 00:07:48.50\00:07:50.97 From 2009 to 2015, 00:07:51.00\00:07:53.23 Maranatha responded to a request 00:07:53.27\00:07:55.10 from the Adventist Church in Zambia 00:07:55.14\00:07:56.94 and built more than 300 churches 00:07:56.97\00:07:59.04 all over the country. 00:07:59.07\00:08:00.41 Since then, 00:08:00.44\00:08:01.78 Adventist membership in Zambia 00:08:01.81\00:08:03.14 has grown to more than 1.2 million people. 00:08:03.18\00:08:06.45 But the rapid growth means 00:08:06.48\00:08:07.88 there are still congregations 00:08:07.92\00:08:09.42 without proper places to worship. 00:08:09.45\00:08:11.49 In 2018 Maranatha returned to Zambia 00:08:11.52\00:08:14.56 to once again build more churches. 00:08:14.59\00:08:16.99 This requires a dedicated local construction team 00:08:17.03\00:08:19.86 that travels from town to town 00:08:19.89\00:08:21.63 bringing the hope of a church to numerous congregations. 00:08:21.66\00:08:25.03 The process of building churches 00:08:25.07\00:08:26.67 includes two visits from the crew. 00:08:26.70\00:08:28.47 First, 00:08:28.50\00:08:29.84 they traveled to the site 00:08:29.87\00:08:31.21 to install metal bases anchored in concrete. 00:08:31.24\00:08:33.04 This ensures that the building has a solid foundation. 00:08:33.07\00:08:35.78 Once this base is hardened and cured, 00:08:41.35\00:08:43.52 the crew loads up the necessary pieces 00:08:43.55\00:08:45.39 for the structure and roof 00:08:45.42\00:08:46.76 and return to complete the church. 00:08:46.79\00:08:49.29 Today, they're headed to Lwendge. 00:08:49.32\00:08:52.09 As the day passes, work steadily progresses. 00:08:52.13\00:08:54.90 The crew is joined by church members 00:08:54.93\00:08:56.70 and other people from the community. 00:08:56.73\00:08:58.63 Everyone is excited 00:08:58.67\00:09:00.00 about the new development in their town. 00:09:00.04\00:09:02.80 Having a proper structure in this area 00:09:02.84\00:09:04.71 actually is evangelism on its own. 00:09:04.74\00:09:07.74 Because like now, we are doing here at Lwendge, 00:09:07.78\00:09:10.71 Maranatha is giving us this structure, 00:09:10.75\00:09:13.11 it becomes easier for me even to evangelize, 00:09:13.15\00:09:15.38 because just the structure itself 00:09:15.42\00:09:17.19 will be preaching to the people around here. 00:09:17.22\00:09:19.65 Already people are already coming here 00:09:19.69\00:09:21.59 and seeing what is happening. 00:09:21.62\00:09:22.96 They just heard the noise here, the works that are going on. 00:09:22.99\00:09:25.79 People are asking, "What is happening there? 00:09:25.83\00:09:27.16 What is happening there?" 00:09:27.20\00:09:28.53 Then they believe that 00:09:28.56\00:09:29.90 now we are worshipping a true God 00:09:29.93\00:09:31.27 because they have given us a structure. 00:09:31.30\00:09:32.80 And then the people will just come on their own. 00:09:32.83\00:09:35.20 Activity on the construction site 00:09:35.24\00:09:36.71 is already enlarging the Lwendge congregation. 00:09:36.74\00:09:39.54 Several members that had drifted away from the group 00:09:39.57\00:09:41.84 have returned 00:09:41.88\00:09:43.21 not only to help build their new church, 00:09:43.24\00:09:44.88 but to reconnect with God and their church family. 00:09:44.91\00:09:47.98 We are very, very excited as a family, 00:09:48.02\00:09:52.65 not only as a family but the entire community. 00:09:52.69\00:09:56.62 We are very, very, very happy and we really appreciate it, 00:09:56.66\00:10:01.76 the job well done. 00:10:01.80\00:10:04.47 This structure will even change many lives of people 00:10:04.50\00:10:10.01 because what they were crying for has now come. 00:10:10.04\00:10:14.71 God has answered our prayers through you. 00:10:14.74\00:10:19.11 And may God bless you abundantly. 00:10:19.15\00:10:22.68 And I think next time we shall have more members 00:10:22.72\00:10:27.52 than we have right now. 00:10:27.56\00:10:30.19 This simple steel frame is providing not only shelter, 00:10:30.23\00:10:33.50 but hope for congregations all over Zambia. 00:10:33.53\00:10:37.17 It might look simple in their eyes, 00:10:37.20\00:10:39.63 but it is big in this community. 00:10:39.67\00:10:42.47 Because it has never happened before. 00:10:42.50\00:10:44.31 The people have never seen such a structure here. 00:10:44.34\00:10:47.38 You see, even the houses around, 00:10:47.41\00:10:48.98 if you're to move around, 00:10:49.01\00:10:50.35 there are no iron sheets around. 00:10:50.38\00:10:51.71 You just use the grass and stuff. 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.31 So when they see just this simple structure, 00:10:53.35\00:10:55.55 it's not simple as it may look like. 00:10:55.58\00:10:57.89 It is big. It will go a long way. 00:10:57.92\00:11:00.66 The ones that Maranatha provided, 00:11:00.69\00:11:02.06 in the first place 00:11:02.09\00:11:03.43 people are very happy about these structures. 00:11:03.46\00:11:05.93 So they are already calling "Pastor, 00:11:05.96\00:11:07.56 we have already started now molding bricks, 00:11:07.60\00:11:10.17 because we have seen that God has come to our aid." 00:11:10.20\00:11:12.70 They are now mobilizing themselves 00:11:12.73\00:11:14.20 to mold the bricks, burn the bricks 00:11:14.24\00:11:16.24 and then begin building the walls. 00:11:16.27\00:11:19.54 If you come back next year, 00:11:19.57\00:11:20.91 you will not find them as open as they are now. 00:11:20.94\00:11:25.21 It's Sabbath morning, 00:11:25.25\00:11:26.58 and one of church members are meeting for worship. 00:11:26.61\00:11:28.98 A few weeks ago, 00:11:29.02\00:11:30.35 their worship experience was far different 00:11:30.39\00:11:32.22 as they were meeting under 00:11:32.25\00:11:33.59 a wall-less thatched roofed structure. 00:11:33.62\00:11:35.62 Their attempt at constructing a church 00:11:35.66\00:11:37.43 sits vacant as the group ran out of resources 00:11:37.46\00:11:40.03 and had to abandon their efforts. 00:11:40.06\00:11:42.13 But then Maranatha came 00:11:42.16\00:11:43.70 and built them a new church 00:11:43.73\00:11:45.50 changing everything for this congregation. 00:11:45.53\00:11:48.47 On the structure when it was built, 00:11:48.50\00:11:50.17 we're motivated. 00:11:50.21\00:11:52.24 We did different kinds of evangelistic programs, 00:11:52.27\00:11:58.21 we invited a lot of people to see the structure 00:11:58.25\00:12:02.78 and how the Adventist movement as Maranatha has helped us. 00:12:02.82\00:12:07.36 It just brought a lot of things to us. 00:12:07.39\00:12:10.39 Yeah, even the way of worship, I think we have improved. 00:12:10.43\00:12:15.66 It is very important that Maranatha continues. 00:12:15.70\00:12:18.00 Actually, I still, 00:12:18.03\00:12:20.74 I'm still going through some pressure now 00:12:20.77\00:12:22.67 because other churches that have heard 00:12:22.70\00:12:24.74 that the Maranatha is building and has built, they are saying, 00:12:24.77\00:12:27.54 "When are they coming here also? 00:12:27.58\00:12:29.34 Because we also need their help." 00:12:29.38\00:12:31.71 When we come back, 00:12:31.75\00:12:33.08 we'll leave the bush and head to Zambia's fourth largest city 00:12:33.11\00:12:36.38 where a small school is making a big impact. 00:12:36.42\00:12:39.62 Although international mission trips are limited right now, 00:12:50.90\00:12:53.34 Maranatha has a number of projects 00:12:53.37\00:12:55.20 coming up in the United States. 00:12:55.24\00:12:57.24 This January, 00:12:57.27\00:12:58.61 escape winter by serving at Camp Kulaqua in Florida. 00:12:58.64\00:13:01.88 This camp is one of the largest 00:13:01.91\00:13:03.35 Seventh-day Adventist summer camps in North America. 00:13:03.38\00:13:06.01 Maranatha is coming for the third year in a row, 00:13:06.05\00:13:08.48 this time to construct a large open air pavilion 00:13:08.52\00:13:11.45 and pour a concrete floor. 00:13:11.49\00:13:13.59 In the spring come to sunny Arizona 00:13:13.62\00:13:15.72 and volunteer at Camp Yavapines. 00:13:15.76\00:13:18.39 This summer camp has served kids and adults 00:13:18.43\00:13:20.56 since 1947 00:13:20.60\00:13:22.26 and needs help maintaining their sprawling acreage. 00:13:22.30\00:13:25.27 Volunteers on this project will help with landscaping, 00:13:25.30\00:13:28.07 clearing deadwood, building bunk beds, 00:13:28.10\00:13:30.47 and constructing bridges over nearby creeks. 00:13:30.51\00:13:33.51 There may not be 00:13:33.54\00:13:34.88 as many international projects currently, 00:13:34.91\00:13:36.85 but there's plenty of work in the United States 00:13:36.88\00:13:39.25 and we need your help. 00:13:39.28\00:13:40.82 To learn more information 00:13:40.85\00:13:42.18 about both of these mission trips, 00:13:42.22\00:13:43.82 and to see our upcoming project calendar, 00:13:43.85\00:13:46.02 visit our website at maranatha.org/volunteer. 00:13:46.05\00:13:49.32 The city of Kabwe 00:13:54.10\00:13:55.43 sits in the central province of Zambia. 00:13:55.46\00:13:57.37 It was founded as a mining town. 00:13:57.40\00:13:59.30 And although the mines have closed, 00:13:59.33\00:14:01.00 commercial farming and other industries 00:14:01.04\00:14:02.90 continue to fuel Zambia's fourth biggest city. 00:14:02.94\00:14:06.68 Kabwe has a vibrant Adventist community. 00:14:06.71\00:14:09.24 Drive throughout the city 00:14:09.28\00:14:10.61 and you'll encounter dozens of Adventist churches 00:14:10.65\00:14:12.78 of all shapes and sizes. 00:14:12.81\00:14:15.15 But for many years, 00:14:15.18\00:14:16.52 the Adventist community was lacking 00:14:16.55\00:14:18.15 one major component, a school. 00:14:18.19\00:14:21.16 The schools that we had here are secular schools 00:14:21.19\00:14:24.26 as well as Catholic schools, basically. 00:14:24.29\00:14:27.86 Now what used to disturb most of the Adventists, 00:14:27.90\00:14:32.40 particularly our conference workers, 00:14:32.43\00:14:34.57 was the issue 00:14:34.60\00:14:35.94 of having those secular meetings 00:14:35.97\00:14:38.14 on the Sabbath. 00:14:38.17\00:14:39.87 Every time there's PTA, on Sabbath. 00:14:39.91\00:14:45.38 There's this kind of gathering Sabbath. 00:14:45.41\00:14:47.62 Hey! 00:14:47.65\00:14:48.98 And it really disturbed them. 00:14:49.02\00:14:51.75 Every time they have to excuse themselves. 00:14:51.79\00:14:53.15 "No. Sorry." 00:14:53.19\00:14:54.92 They have to beat about the bush. 00:14:54.96\00:14:56.32 "I won't be available. 00:14:56.36\00:14:57.79 I'm traveling to such and such a place. 00:14:57.83\00:14:59.89 There's this function." 00:14:59.93\00:15:01.26 Hence, there was need now that we come about to, 00:15:01.30\00:15:04.50 we come out with this school for, 00:15:04.53\00:15:06.53 this church school. 00:15:06.57\00:15:08.74 In 2006, 00:15:08.77\00:15:10.11 the Kabwe Adventist School began with 64 students. 00:15:10.14\00:15:13.98 Each passing week was a matter of prayer 00:15:14.01\00:15:16.61 as no one knew if the school would survive. 00:15:16.64\00:15:19.71 And it began as a real baby. 00:15:19.75\00:15:24.09 No one was sure 00:15:24.12\00:15:25.45 that this school would grow up what it is now. 00:15:25.49\00:15:28.22 Okay. 00:15:28.26\00:15:29.59 Struggling with enrollment, 64 pupils. 00:15:29.62\00:15:34.00 That's how our school progressed. 00:15:34.03\00:15:38.37 It opened to the public on eight of January. 00:15:38.40\00:15:42.20 And the pupils in the class maybe here there are three, 00:15:42.24\00:15:46.17 other class there are four. 00:15:46.21\00:15:47.61 And you would wonder, 00:15:47.64\00:15:48.98 "Is this school ever going to be filled?" 00:15:49.01\00:15:51.58 But despite the small size, 00:15:51.61\00:15:53.31 they were devoted to providing the best, 00:15:53.35\00:15:55.32 most well-rounded education in town. 00:15:55.35\00:15:58.85 And enrollment grew. 00:15:58.89\00:16:01.32 Why? 00:16:01.36\00:16:02.69 Because it clicked in everyone's mind. 00:16:02.72\00:16:05.93 Most of our parents around that Adventist education, 00:16:05.96\00:16:12.40 basically, it is a two-sided coin. 00:16:12.43\00:16:16.40 Okay. 00:16:16.44\00:16:17.77 The development of a spiritual being, 00:16:17.81\00:16:19.77 as well as excellence in the world that we live in. 00:16:19.81\00:16:24.25 Thirteen years later, the baby school is thriving. 00:16:24.28\00:16:27.95 Enrollment has grown to more than 500. 00:16:27.98\00:16:30.25 And the campus now offers education from preschool 00:16:30.29\00:16:33.05 through secondary school. 00:16:33.09\00:16:35.16 Over the last decade, 00:16:35.19\00:16:36.52 the Kabwe Adventist School has set itself apart 00:16:36.56\00:16:39.06 in the sea of education choices in town. 00:16:39.09\00:16:41.36 Local Adventist families aren't the only one 00:16:46.70\00:16:49.20 sending their children to study there. 00:16:49.24\00:16:51.21 Currently 65% of the student population is non-Adventist. 00:16:51.24\00:16:55.78 The local community at large 00:16:55.81\00:16:57.15 has discovered high quality education 00:16:57.18\00:16:59.31 offered on the campus. 00:16:59.35\00:17:01.65 The differences are quite subtle, right? 00:17:01.68\00:17:04.25 So we have the holistic approach 00:17:04.29\00:17:06.25 of the physical, the mental and the spiritual faculties. 00:17:06.29\00:17:09.22 So when we are training their hands, 00:17:09.26\00:17:10.59 we're giving them a skill set 00:17:10.63\00:17:11.96 that other schools do not offer. 00:17:11.99\00:17:14.10 Mostly, people send their kids to school 00:17:14.13\00:17:16.26 just to get the intellectual aspect. 00:17:16.30\00:17:19.00 Have your kids, you know, 00:17:19.03\00:17:21.57 astute and get them very schooled and learned. 00:17:21.60\00:17:26.11 There's also a spiritual aspect to it. 00:17:26.14\00:17:27.88 There are certain challenges that people face in life 00:17:27.91\00:17:30.18 that your intellect might not get you through. 00:17:30.21\00:17:32.51 So you need that spiritual aspect. 00:17:32.55\00:17:34.65 You also need the skill set to help you navigate 00:17:34.68\00:17:36.52 through life's problems and challenges quite easily. 00:17:36.55\00:17:39.22 One of the items 00:17:39.25\00:17:40.59 that contributes to the holistic education 00:17:40.62\00:17:42.49 offered at the Kabwe Adventist School 00:17:42.52\00:17:44.66 is an intentional focus on spiritual development. 00:17:44.69\00:17:47.70 The school staff includes a team of chaplains 00:17:47.73\00:17:49.63 led by Mawuse Michello. 00:17:49.66\00:17:52.00 They care for the spiritual needs 00:17:52.03\00:17:53.37 of each and every person connected with the school. 00:17:53.40\00:17:56.50 So my function is to offer 00:17:56.54\00:17:58.77 the spiritual aspect of the school. 00:17:58.81\00:18:00.14 So remember we have the mental aspect, 00:18:00.18\00:18:02.74 we have the physical aspect. 00:18:02.78\00:18:04.71 So I help out with both the spiritual and the social 00:18:04.75\00:18:07.75 integration of the child. 00:18:07.78\00:18:09.85 And not just the pupils themselves, 00:18:09.88\00:18:11.22 but also the staff members. 00:18:11.25\00:18:12.92 So we do works like counseling 00:18:12.95\00:18:16.02 for both staff members and pupils. 00:18:16.06\00:18:18.96 And even parents when they do see fit. 00:18:18.99\00:18:22.56 We do talk to parents when they come to get reports 00:18:22.60\00:18:24.83 for their children, 00:18:24.87\00:18:26.20 and they do visit our office as well 00:18:26.23\00:18:28.07 just to help them understand 00:18:28.10\00:18:29.44 that we need a balance between the homeschooling 00:18:29.47\00:18:32.27 and the actual space that we have here 00:18:32.31\00:18:35.18 between the teacher and the child. 00:18:35.21\00:18:37.11 The chaplain's work is basically 00:18:37.15\00:18:38.88 quite massive at this place. 00:18:38.91\00:18:42.48 Mawuse has learned that 00:18:42.52\00:18:43.85 ensuring a child's emotional and spiritual needs are met 00:18:43.89\00:18:47.09 makes for more engaged students, 00:18:47.12\00:18:49.36 encouraging and interacting with students 00:18:49.39\00:18:51.76 as well as visiting families in their homes 00:18:51.79\00:18:53.83 is a regular part of his work. 00:18:53.86\00:18:55.63 In this time and age in which we're living in, 00:18:55.66\00:18:57.73 a lot of homes are broken. 00:18:57.77\00:19:00.14 Those that are being made are not made 00:19:00.17\00:19:02.17 on the spiritual stance that they should, 00:19:02.20\00:19:04.44 so it affects the well-being of the child psychologically, 00:19:04.47\00:19:08.18 it affects them socially. 00:19:08.21\00:19:09.68 They become very disruptive. 00:19:09.71\00:19:12.41 But if we can bring in that component 00:19:12.45\00:19:13.98 where we have a school where we build good citizens 00:19:14.02\00:19:17.32 and candidates for heaven as well, 00:19:17.35\00:19:18.72 it actually does a lot for this community 00:19:18.75\00:19:21.92 and the world to come as well. 00:19:21.96\00:19:23.29 So we need more than just this school, 00:19:23.32\00:19:26.93 but most schools to actually open up 00:19:26.96\00:19:28.30 and help with the social well-being 00:19:28.33\00:19:31.13 of the community at large. 00:19:31.17\00:19:32.93 The quality of education offered on the Kabwe campus 00:19:32.97\00:19:35.80 and the nurturing staff 00:19:35.84\00:19:37.17 has families flocking to the school. 00:19:37.21\00:19:39.67 When I first came here, 00:19:39.71\00:19:41.21 I did a sample 00:19:41.24\00:19:43.04 because I really wanted quality education in the kids. 00:19:43.08\00:19:48.85 So when I went around, 00:19:48.88\00:19:51.19 I was told there is Kabwe Adventist School 00:19:51.22\00:19:53.39 being a Christian school. 00:19:53.42\00:19:55.29 So I went there to look for space for the kids. 00:19:55.32\00:20:01.26 It was not easy 00:20:01.30\00:20:02.63 because space there are limited. 00:20:02.66\00:20:04.57 And they accepted me to take the children there. 00:20:04.60\00:20:09.94 Chileshe has three daughters, 00:20:09.97\00:20:11.74 all attending the Kabwe Adventist School. 00:20:11.77\00:20:14.54 He lives 30 minutes outside the town, 00:20:14.58\00:20:16.64 which makes the commute to school a bit challenging. 00:20:16.68\00:20:19.15 But to him, the drive is worth it. 00:20:19.18\00:20:21.78 Education is very important. 00:20:21.82\00:20:23.59 Me, I never had that chance. 00:20:23.62\00:20:28.22 My parents, 00:20:28.26\00:20:29.59 they didn't work well to, on my foundation. 00:20:29.62\00:20:33.09 So I did want to create 00:20:33.13\00:20:37.17 a very good foundation for them. 00:20:37.20\00:20:39.53 And it's an investment. I'm trying to budget for it. 00:20:39.57\00:20:43.74 I really want to invest in them so that even when I die, 00:20:43.77\00:20:47.61 once they finish school, they're going to survive. 00:20:47.64\00:20:50.31 So education is the best gift that I can give a child. 00:20:50.35\00:20:54.65 So I've not even looked at the distance. 00:20:54.68\00:20:57.19 It's far from here to town. 00:20:57.22\00:20:59.59 But I'm one of those 00:20:59.62\00:21:00.96 who are trying at least to give quality education. 00:21:00.99\00:21:04.79 Chileshe's assessment of the school 00:21:04.83\00:21:06.46 is shared by other parents 00:21:06.49\00:21:07.93 who want the best education for their children. 00:21:07.96\00:21:10.70 I looked around the schools around Kabwe, 00:21:10.73\00:21:15.14 but when I found that 00:21:15.17\00:21:16.91 the quality for the education you're providing there 00:21:16.94\00:21:20.64 is much more qualitative than any other schools. 00:21:20.68\00:21:26.25 That's what brought me there. 00:21:26.28\00:21:28.98 The school has impacted me 00:21:29.02\00:21:31.99 in a very big way 00:21:32.02\00:21:33.36 because you are providing 00:21:33.39\00:21:37.59 that kind of holistic type of education. 00:21:37.63\00:21:43.33 You get a child 00:21:43.37\00:21:44.70 but you treat that child like your own. 00:21:44.73\00:21:48.67 Then by the time 00:21:48.70\00:21:50.11 they're coming out of your school, 00:21:50.14\00:21:53.24 they are real citizens of our Zambia. 00:21:53.27\00:21:58.31 Gordon's daughter Precious is in secondary school 00:21:58.35\00:22:00.98 and is the top student in her class. 00:22:01.02\00:22:03.08 He is grateful 00:22:03.12\00:22:04.45 for the excellent academic program at Kabwe. 00:22:04.49\00:22:06.59 And the icing on the cake is the relationship they built 00:22:06.62\00:22:09.32 with the school's faculty and staff. 00:22:09.36\00:22:11.93 We are even good friends with the teachers. 00:22:11.96\00:22:14.76 I know their contact numbers, they've been into my home, 00:22:14.80\00:22:18.33 I've been to their school. 00:22:18.37\00:22:19.73 And each time there is anything concerning our child, 00:22:19.77\00:22:25.11 they contact me. 00:22:25.14\00:22:26.98 Chileshe, Gordon 00:22:27.01\00:22:28.34 and their families are not Adventist, 00:22:28.38\00:22:30.21 but they feel fortunate 00:22:30.25\00:22:31.58 to be part of the Kabwe Adventist School family. 00:22:31.61\00:22:34.22 Demand at the school is high, but space is very limited. 00:22:34.25\00:22:38.39 Parents, they really want to take their children 00:22:38.42\00:22:40.12 at Kabwe Adventist School. 00:22:40.16\00:22:42.49 But there is no space and the staff, 00:22:42.52\00:22:47.53 they have restricted themselves in growing their number. 00:22:47.56\00:22:51.90 They have put the control measure there. 00:22:51.93\00:22:54.60 They don't just accept anyone because of their space. 00:22:54.64\00:22:58.61 So they cannot accommodate the classrooms, 00:22:58.64\00:23:02.04 the space is not enough for expansion. 00:23:02.08\00:23:05.51 Because now we also have a challenge of enrollment. 00:23:05.55\00:23:08.32 Because many people are coming. Okay. 00:23:08.35\00:23:09.85 They have realized that Adventist education is sweet. 00:23:09.88\00:23:16.19 They want to test that sweetness. 00:23:16.22\00:23:19.53 And every time we just say, 00:23:19.56\00:23:21.30 "No. There's no space." 00:23:21.33\00:23:23.33 The ideal design is for about 450. 00:23:23.37\00:23:28.64 But we do extend 00:23:28.67\00:23:30.01 because of the large amount of people 00:23:30.04\00:23:32.44 who want to bring their kids here. 00:23:32.47\00:23:33.91 So you have quite a long list of people 00:23:33.94\00:23:36.31 who are on the waiting list, 00:23:36.34\00:23:37.98 in case someone goes off on transfer, 00:23:38.01\00:23:39.41 they will easily bring their child here. 00:23:39.45\00:23:41.85 But we don't have space for everyone as yet. 00:23:41.88\00:23:44.65 There are more than 500 students 00:23:44.69\00:23:46.55 meeting in a space designed for less 00:23:46.59\00:23:48.66 and a long waiting list for admission. 00:23:48.69\00:23:51.16 The school needed to grow, 00:23:51.19\00:23:52.96 but they had no resources to do so. 00:23:52.99\00:23:55.03 Plus, the current campus is landlocked 00:23:55.06\00:23:57.10 with no physical space to expand. 00:23:57.13\00:23:59.67 From 2009-2014, 00:23:59.70\00:24:02.37 Maranatha constructed seven schools in Zambia. 00:24:02.40\00:24:05.64 When the growing need for churches and schools 00:24:05.67\00:24:07.51 brought us back to the country in 2018, 00:24:07.54\00:24:09.98 the expansion of the Kabwe School 00:24:10.01\00:24:11.85 was high on the list of needs. 00:24:11.88\00:24:13.95 Local church leaders identified a large plot of land 00:24:13.98\00:24:16.82 and Maranatha quickly began construction 00:24:16.85\00:24:18.72 on a 12-classroom campus. 00:24:18.75\00:24:21.16 The new site will be for elementary students 00:24:21.19\00:24:23.32 moving them out of cramped facilities 00:24:23.36\00:24:25.09 and into spacious classrooms. 00:24:25.13\00:24:27.06 This also enables the secondary school 00:24:27.10\00:24:29.03 to expand into the existing elementary classrooms. 00:24:29.06\00:24:32.57 When you go into the new campus, 00:24:32.60\00:24:34.00 you see the new buildings that are coming up. 00:24:34.04\00:24:36.50 It actually gives you hope 00:24:36.54\00:24:37.87 that we have more spaces and more doors 00:24:37.91\00:24:40.84 that are open to allow pupils to come through. 00:24:40.88\00:24:43.51 And the beauty of it is, 00:24:43.55\00:24:47.05 for every child that will go through, 00:24:47.08\00:24:48.42 they'll have an opportunity to actually meet Christ 00:24:48.45\00:24:50.65 in the classroom. 00:24:50.69\00:24:52.05 So the more blocks you have, 00:24:52.09\00:24:54.02 the more opportunities for Christ you have 00:24:54.06\00:24:55.79 to expose Him to the community at large. 00:24:55.82\00:24:57.96 Most of them will never have an opportunity 00:24:57.99\00:24:59.43 to get to a church building 00:24:59.46\00:25:00.80 to actually listen to the gospel. 00:25:00.83\00:25:02.30 But when they come to Christian school, 00:25:02.33\00:25:03.73 that's the one opportunity they have. 00:25:03.77\00:25:05.57 So you actually have more of an opportunity 00:25:05.60\00:25:07.34 to minister to them, 00:25:07.37\00:25:08.70 and to share Christ with them. 00:25:08.74\00:25:10.07 So it's beautiful 00:25:10.11\00:25:11.44 when we see the campus growing that much. 00:25:11.47\00:25:12.91 We have more spaces open 00:25:12.94\00:25:15.01 to actually preach the gospel to them. 00:25:15.04\00:25:18.21 This school, 00:25:18.25\00:25:21.18 it is God Himself that is building it. 00:25:21.22\00:25:24.25 But He cannot come from heaven to come and mold bricks. 00:25:24.29\00:25:26.79 But through His agencies He's able to do that. 00:25:26.82\00:25:29.22 So the coming of Maranatha International, 00:25:29.26\00:25:31.63 it's not human dream. 00:25:31.66\00:25:35.76 No. no, no, no, no, no. 00:25:35.80\00:25:37.73 God Himself puts things in place. 00:25:37.77\00:25:40.77 He has got a plan for everything. 00:25:40.80\00:25:42.87 And at every moment, He puts things in place, 00:25:42.90\00:25:46.07 and they just fit in. 00:25:46.11\00:25:48.58 Maranatha's work to provide 00:25:48.61\00:25:50.05 churches, schools and water wells 00:25:50.08\00:25:52.31 is answering prayers all over Zambia. 00:25:52.35\00:25:55.18 But we need your help. 00:25:55.22\00:25:57.72 Help us provide water 00:25:57.75\00:25:59.15 to communities that are thirsty. 00:25:59.19\00:26:00.66 Help us expand opportunities 00:26:04.33\00:26:06.29 for children to learn about their world. 00:26:06.33\00:26:08.33 And the princess gave him a name. 00:26:11.70\00:26:15.94 Do you know the name? 00:26:15.97\00:26:17.54 Who can guess? 00:26:17.57\00:26:18.91 Me. You? 00:26:18.94\00:26:20.28 Moses. Moses. 00:26:20.31\00:26:21.64 Help us spread hope 00:26:21.68\00:26:23.04 through the construction of churches. 00:26:23.08\00:26:24.98 Projects in Zambia are in need of funding. 00:26:25.01\00:26:27.48 And you can help by making a donation. 00:26:27.52\00:26:30.89 Many of the people who walk through those doors 00:26:30.92\00:26:32.82 who never knew Christ at the very start. 00:26:32.85\00:26:35.19 Once they get to know Him 00:26:35.22\00:26:36.56 and they make their choice for Him. 00:26:36.59\00:26:38.16 It would be nice for you to actually get those messages. 00:26:38.19\00:26:41.76 When you get to heaven, someone comes and say, 00:26:41.80\00:26:43.13 "Thank you for giving." 00:26:43.16\00:26:44.60 So it's an opportunity for us to actually serve humanity. 00:26:44.63\00:26:47.77 You might never be the best of preachers, 00:26:47.80\00:26:49.57 you might never make it to history books 00:26:49.60\00:26:51.97 to be known to be people 00:26:52.01\00:26:53.98 who've helped humanity so much so. 00:26:54.01\00:26:56.14 But when we give the little donations that we can, 00:26:56.18\00:26:58.18 we come and help build the school, 00:26:58.21\00:27:00.12 we send our kids to this place, 00:27:00.15\00:27:01.98 those are the few contributions 00:27:02.02\00:27:03.35 that will actually make so much of a difference 00:27:03.39\00:27:05.25 to people around. 00:27:05.29\00:27:06.62 So making a difference in just one's child's life 00:27:06.65\00:27:08.36 is very important. 00:27:08.39\00:27:09.72 And I would ask you to, to try and do it. 00:27:09.76\00:27:12.26 Yeah, it's an opportunity in life 00:27:12.29\00:27:13.63 to serve God in just this small space. 00:27:13.66\00:27:17.70 You may not realize even as Maranatha, 00:27:17.73\00:27:19.53 the work that you are doing now, 00:27:19.57\00:27:20.90 how far it will go, 00:27:20.94\00:27:22.27 and how far it goes in the minds of the people. 00:27:22.30\00:27:24.47 So it is quite important 00:27:24.51\00:27:25.84 that Maranatha continues building these structures here 00:27:25.87\00:27:28.74 because at the end of the day, 00:27:28.78\00:27:30.11 people praise God for this work that you are doing. 00:27:30.15\00:27:32.41
