Hi, I'm Hilary Macias with the Maranatha Minute. 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.37 The country of India is on strict lockdown 00:00:03.40\00:00:06.03 in response to the coronavirus pandemic. 00:00:06.07\00:00:08.87 In the Greater Delhi area, 00:00:08.90\00:00:10.51 people are not allowed to leave their homes 00:00:10.54\00:00:12.61 except at designated times 00:00:12.64\00:00:14.31 to purchase groceries and medication. 00:00:14.34\00:00:16.75 Yet in a remote corner of Northeast India, 00:00:16.78\00:00:19.31 one of our crews have received special permission 00:00:19.35\00:00:21.95 to continue construction. 00:00:21.98\00:00:23.89 After choosing a shelter-in-place 00:00:23.92\00:00:25.62 at the site of the new Jingshai Mihngi School, 00:00:25.65\00:00:28.09 the local town leadership granted authorization 00:00:28.12\00:00:30.73 for the Maranatha team to keep working. 00:00:30.76\00:00:33.56 The new campus will literally be a breath of fresh air. 00:00:33.60\00:00:37.10 Their current campus is old 00:00:37.13\00:00:38.60 and sits next to an open sewer line. 00:00:38.63\00:00:41.40 Despite this drawback, the school has 476 students. 00:00:41.44\00:00:45.34 With the new buildings and location, 00:00:45.37\00:00:47.18 this number is only bound to grow. 00:00:47.21\00:00:49.64 If you would like to make a donation 00:00:49.68\00:00:51.18 for projects in India, 00:00:51.21\00:00:52.58 go to our website at maranatha.org 00:00:52.61\00:00:55.35 or you can call the number on your screen to donate. 00:00:55.38\00:00:58.25 More than 16 million people live in the country of Zambia. 00:01:50.97\00:01:54.21 Although this Sub-Saharan country 00:01:57.35\00:01:58.81 is most famous for wonders such as Victoria Falls, 00:01:58.85\00:02:02.08 most people can be found living far off the beaten path. 00:02:02.12\00:02:05.49 Lilian lives in the village of Lwendge 00:02:20.70\00:02:22.50 with her husband and their 10 children. 00:02:22.54\00:02:25.34 A teacher by profession, 00:02:25.37\00:02:26.71 Lillian moved to the village years ago 00:02:26.74\00:02:28.24 to care for her disabled father. 00:02:28.28\00:02:29.84 Now she makes a meager living by traveling into the forest, 00:02:32.15\00:02:35.78 cutting down trees, and making charcoal. 00:02:35.82\00:02:38.92 Her situation is not ideal. 00:02:38.95\00:02:41.46 Farming or raising livestock are not options due to drought, 00:02:41.49\00:02:45.13 lack of financial resources, and clean water. 00:02:45.16\00:02:47.43 In fact, the nearest well is a few kilometers away 00:02:50.53\00:02:53.27 and Lillian must make several trips a day 00:02:53.30\00:02:55.44 to provide water for her family. 00:02:55.47\00:02:59.57 We suffer a lot here 00:02:59.61\00:03:01.88 because the water is very deep. 00:03:01.91\00:03:07.45 You can dig with hands. 00:03:07.48\00:03:10.09 It's very difficult, anyway. 00:03:10.12\00:03:12.85 But we have to do it because water is life. 00:03:12.89\00:03:16.59 Despite the difficulties, 00:03:25.10\00:03:26.47 Lillian has found strength through her faith, 00:03:26.50\00:03:28.84 connection to God, and her local church. 00:03:28.87\00:03:32.01 It's important because and I found it easy. 00:03:32.04\00:03:36.98 When I am in difficulties, 00:03:37.01\00:03:38.68 I find that my members 00:03:38.71\00:03:40.82 are the ones to want to empower me. 00:03:40.85\00:03:42.25 And that encourages me also to do so, 00:03:42.28\00:03:45.65 so that those who are in difficulties, 00:03:45.69\00:03:50.53 they can also be empowered as I was. 00:03:50.56\00:03:54.66 Lilian attends the Lwendge Seventh Day Adventist Church. 00:03:54.70\00:03:57.87 This congregation started 15 years ago 00:03:57.90\00:04:00.17 and membership has grown to 78 members. 00:04:00.20\00:04:03.44 They are zealous 00:04:03.47\00:04:04.81 about spreading God's love to their neighbors. 00:04:04.84\00:04:08.01 The passion this group has for sharing Christ 00:04:08.04\00:04:10.18 is something you'll find all over the country. 00:04:10.21\00:04:12.35 Because of this, 00:04:12.38\00:04:13.72 Zambia is an area of the world 00:04:13.75\00:04:15.12 with one of the largest Adventist memberships. 00:04:15.15\00:04:18.72 What motivates them to become part of the church 00:04:18.75\00:04:20.92 is actually the knowledge that they receive 00:04:20.96\00:04:23.39 that Jesus loves them 00:04:23.43\00:04:25.39 even before them deciding to love Jesus. 00:04:25.43\00:04:28.43 But then He is the one 00:04:28.46\00:04:29.80 who first decided to love them. 00:04:29.83\00:04:31.30 And so when they realize that actually, 00:04:31.33\00:04:33.44 we have someone who loves us or who loved us before, 00:04:33.47\00:04:36.60 then they are motivated to join the church. 00:04:36.64\00:04:40.34 This rapidly growing church creates challenges. 00:04:40.38\00:04:43.55 Eddie Himoonde is the pastor of the Lwendge congregation, 00:04:43.58\00:04:47.18 but they are just one of the many groups 00:04:47.22\00:04:49.18 he is responsible for. 00:04:49.22\00:04:51.12 In my district, I have 35 organized churches. 00:04:51.15\00:04:54.92 And the area is about 200 kilometers apart. 00:04:54.96\00:05:00.00 Yes, the third whole district membership is about 11,260. 00:05:00.03\00:05:05.03 Caring for more than 11,000 members is very demanding. 00:05:05.07\00:05:08.77 Visiting the numerous churches in his area 00:05:08.80\00:05:10.87 is a difficult endeavor, 00:05:10.91\00:05:12.24 especially since Pastor Himoonde 00:05:12.27\00:05:13.91 doesn't have access to reliable transportation. 00:05:13.94\00:05:16.95 Sometimes I take maybe a week or two weeks 00:05:16.98\00:05:20.28 just walking to the furthest church 00:05:20.32\00:05:23.35 because I don't have a car, I don't have a motorbike, 00:05:23.39\00:05:26.55 I walk. 00:05:26.59\00:05:27.99 And sometimes members, sometimes who agree, 00:05:28.02\00:05:30.13 they come and pick me up on their motorcycle. 00:05:30.16\00:05:32.29 They cycle me to that church. 00:05:32.33\00:05:33.66 But if there's no one 00:05:33.70\00:05:35.03 who's having even a bicycle in that area, 00:05:35.06\00:05:36.97 then I have to walk through, 00:05:37.00\00:05:38.43 I sleep on the way, wake up in the morning, 00:05:38.47\00:05:40.40 and then continue moving until I reach to that church. 00:05:40.44\00:05:43.54 And then I begin visiting the members now 00:05:43.57\00:05:45.54 one on one, praying with them, 00:05:45.57\00:05:47.84 seeing how they are doing and encouraging them. 00:05:47.88\00:05:50.51 Then I get back to my home again. 00:05:50.55\00:05:52.71 The large area makes visits few and far between. 00:05:52.75\00:05:57.09 In a year, it's once. 00:05:57.12\00:05:59.32 Yes. 00:05:59.35\00:06:00.69 On average, it's once because these 35 organized churches. 00:06:00.72\00:06:03.06 And then I still have smaller churches again, 00:06:03.09\00:06:05.26 about 20 of them, which also need my attention. 00:06:05.29\00:06:08.80 So if I visit this church here, 00:06:08.83\00:06:10.53 for me to rotate back to this church, 00:06:10.57\00:06:12.90 it's a challenge. 00:06:12.93\00:06:14.37 So what helps me basically is to train the laymen. 00:06:14.40\00:06:18.34 Laymen are well trained, 00:06:18.37\00:06:19.71 well-organized that even if I'm not there, 00:06:19.74\00:06:21.81 they'll still carry on with the activities. 00:06:21.84\00:06:23.35 And then they just give me the reports. 00:06:23.38\00:06:25.41 Unless there is something is so much challenging, 00:06:25.45\00:06:27.15 then they call me. 00:06:27.18\00:06:28.78 I quickly come their aid. 00:06:28.82\00:06:30.72 Pastor Himoonde relies on dedicated members like Lilian 00:06:36.73\00:06:39.73 to keep the churches alive and vibrant. 00:06:39.76\00:06:42.06 But one element 00:06:42.10\00:06:43.43 many congregations are still missing 00:06:43.47\00:06:45.50 is an adequate place to worship. 00:06:45.53\00:06:47.74 Although some groups 00:06:47.77\00:06:49.10 are able to build church structures, 00:06:49.14\00:06:50.71 many are left worshiping under trees 00:06:50.74\00:06:52.81 or in simple shelters 00:06:52.84\00:06:54.18 like the members have built in the Lwendge. 00:06:54.21\00:06:57.58 The challenge that I face when such incidents happen 00:06:57.61\00:07:02.38 where we evangelize, maybe public campaign, 00:07:02.42\00:07:04.55 then there people give themselves, 00:07:04.59\00:07:06.45 but then when they come to the actual church, 00:07:06.49\00:07:08.99 they find that actually 00:07:09.02\00:07:10.36 where we are worshiping is not conducive. 00:07:10.39\00:07:15.16 There are no seats, 00:07:15.20\00:07:17.03 they are worshipping under the tree 00:07:17.07\00:07:18.40 or maybe under the grass, 00:07:18.43\00:07:20.27 then it becomes a challenge for them to stay on. 00:07:20.30\00:07:23.74 They feel like they cannot really stay on this church. 00:07:23.77\00:07:28.28 They need a better structure. 00:07:28.31\00:07:29.94 We have some that actually leave this place 00:07:29.98\00:07:32.61 to go and worship in some far distant church 00:07:32.65\00:07:35.72 because there they have at least a structure 00:07:35.75\00:07:37.92 they have built. 00:07:37.95\00:07:39.29 But here they feel like, 00:07:39.32\00:07:40.66 "No. We cannot worship our God in this scenario." 00:07:40.69\00:07:44.39 The challenges Pastor Himoonde faces 00:07:44.43\00:07:46.16 are echoed all across Zambia. 00:07:46.19\00:07:48.53 There just aren't enough churches. 00:07:48.56\00:07:51.00 From 2009 to 2015, 00:07:51.03\00:07:53.23 Maranatha responded to a request 00:07:53.27\00:07:55.10 from the Adventist Church in Zambia 00:07:55.14\00:07:56.94 and built more than 300 churches 00:07:56.97\00:07:59.07 all over the country. 00:07:59.11\00:08:00.44 Since then, 00:08:00.48\00:08:01.81 Adventist membership in Zambia 00:08:01.84\00:08:03.18 has grown to more than 1.2 million people. 00:08:03.21\00:08:06.48 But the rapid growth means 00:08:06.51\00:08:07.85 there are still congregations 00:08:07.88\00:08:09.48 without proper places to worship. 00:08:09.52\00:08:11.49 In 2018, Maranatha returned to Zambia 00:08:11.52\00:08:14.52 to once again build more churches. 00:08:14.56\00:08:16.99 This requires a dedicated local construction team 00:08:17.03\00:08:19.86 that travels from town to town 00:08:19.89\00:08:21.66 bringing the hope of a church to numerous congregations. 00:08:21.70\00:08:24.97 The process of building churches 00:08:25.00\00:08:26.60 includes two visits from the crew. 00:08:26.63\00:08:28.90 First, they travel to the site 00:08:28.94\00:08:30.67 to install metal bases anchored in concrete. 00:08:30.71\00:08:33.07 This ensures that the building has a solid foundation. 00:08:33.11\00:08:35.74 Once these bases harden and cure, 00:08:41.32\00:08:43.45 the crew loads up the necessary pieces 00:08:43.49\00:08:45.42 for the structure and roof 00:08:45.45\00:08:46.79 and return to complete the church. 00:08:46.82\00:08:49.32 Today, they're headed to Lwendge. 00:08:49.36\00:08:52.13 As the day passes, work steadily progresses, 00:08:52.16\00:08:54.93 the crew is joined by church members 00:08:54.96\00:08:56.73 and other people from the community. 00:08:56.77\00:08:58.67 Everyone is excited 00:08:58.70\00:09:00.04 about the new development in their town. 00:09:00.07\00:09:02.74 Having a proper structure in this area 00:09:02.77\00:09:04.91 actually is evangelism on its own. 00:09:04.94\00:09:07.84 Because like now, we are doing here at Lwendge, 00:09:07.88\00:09:10.75 Maranatha is giving us this structure, 00:09:10.78\00:09:13.11 it becomes easier for me even to evangelize 00:09:13.15\00:09:15.28 because just the structure itself will be preaching 00:09:15.32\00:09:17.82 to the people around here. 00:09:17.85\00:09:19.65 Already people are already coming here 00:09:19.69\00:09:21.52 and seeing what is happening. 00:09:21.56\00:09:22.89 They just heard the noise here, the works that are going on. 00:09:22.92\00:09:25.76 People are asking, "What is happening here? 00:09:25.79\00:09:27.13 What is happening there?" 00:09:27.16\00:09:28.50 Then they believe that now we are worshipping a true God 00:09:28.53\00:09:30.80 because they have given us a structure. 00:09:30.83\00:09:32.83 And then the people will just come on their own. 00:09:32.87\00:09:35.17 Activity on the construction site 00:09:35.20\00:09:36.64 is already enlarging the Lwendge congregation. 00:09:36.67\00:09:39.57 Several members that had drifted away from the group 00:09:39.61\00:09:41.94 have returned not only to help build their new church 00:09:41.98\00:09:44.85 but to reconnect with God and their church family. 00:09:44.88\00:09:48.12 We are very, very excited as a family, 00:09:48.15\00:09:52.65 not only as a family but the entire community. 00:09:52.69\00:09:56.49 We are very, very, very happy, 00:09:56.52\00:09:58.79 and we really appreciate the job well done. 00:09:58.83\00:10:04.43 This structure will even change many lives of people 00:10:04.47\00:10:10.01 because what they were crying for has now come. 00:10:10.04\00:10:14.64 God has answered our prayers through you. 00:10:14.68\00:10:19.08 And may God bless you abundantly. 00:10:19.11\00:10:22.72 And I think next time, 00:10:22.75\00:10:25.35 we shall have more members than we have right now. 00:10:25.39\00:10:30.23 This simple steel frame is providing not only shelter, 00:10:30.26\00:10:33.46 but hope for congregations all over Zambia. 00:10:33.50\00:10:37.13 It might look simple in their eyes, 00:10:37.17\00:10:39.63 but it is big in this community. 00:10:39.67\00:10:42.50 Because it has never happened before. 00:10:42.54\00:10:44.21 The people have never seen such a structure here. 00:10:44.24\00:10:47.34 You see even the houses around, if you're to move around, 00:10:47.38\00:10:50.05 there are no iron sheets around. 00:10:50.08\00:10:51.55 You just use the grass and stuff. 00:10:51.58\00:10:53.35 So when they see just this simple structure, 00:10:53.38\00:10:55.62 it's not simple as it may look like. 00:10:55.65\00:10:57.75 It is big. It will go a long way. 00:10:57.79\00:11:00.66 The ones that Maranatha provided, 00:11:00.69\00:11:02.09 in the first place, 00:11:02.12\00:11:03.46 people are very happy about these structures. 00:11:03.49\00:11:05.99 So they are already calling, "Pastor, 00:11:06.03\00:11:07.53 we have already started now molding bricks 00:11:07.56\00:11:10.07 because we have seen that God has come to our aid." 00:11:10.10\00:11:12.63 They are now mobilizing themselves to mold the bricks, 00:11:12.67\00:11:15.44 burn the bricks and then begin building the walls. 00:11:15.47\00:11:19.57 If you come back next year, 00:11:19.61\00:11:20.94 you will not find them as open as they are now. 00:11:20.98\00:11:25.21 It's Sabbath morning 00:11:25.25\00:11:26.58 and WanaChurch members are meeting for worship. 00:11:26.61\00:11:28.95 A few weeks ago, 00:11:28.98\00:11:30.32 their worship experience was far different 00:11:30.35\00:11:32.19 as they were meeting under 00:11:32.22\00:11:33.56 a wall-less thatched roofed structure. 00:11:33.59\00:11:35.62 Their attempt at constructing a church 00:11:35.66\00:11:37.36 sits vacant as the group ran out of resources 00:11:37.39\00:11:40.06 and had to abandon their efforts. 00:11:40.10\00:11:42.13 But then Maranatha came and built them a new church, 00:11:42.16\00:11:45.43 changing everything for this congregation. 00:11:45.47\00:11:48.50 On the structure when it was built, 00:11:48.54\00:11:50.17 we're motivated. 00:11:50.21\00:11:51.54 We did different kinds of evangelistic programs, 00:11:54.81\00:11:58.25 we invited a lot of people to see the structure 00:11:58.28\00:12:02.78 and how the Adventist movement as Maranatha has helped us. 00:12:02.82\00:12:07.36 It just brought a lot of things to us. 00:12:07.39\00:12:10.26 Yeah, even the way of worship, I think we have improved. 00:12:10.29\00:12:15.66 It is very important that Maranatha continues. 00:12:15.70\00:12:17.93 Actually, I'm still going through some pressure now 00:12:17.97\00:12:22.64 because other churches heard 00:12:22.67\00:12:24.77 that Maranatha is building and has built are saying, 00:12:24.81\00:12:27.54 "When are they coming he also? 00:12:27.58\00:12:29.31 Because we also need their help." 00:12:29.34\00:12:31.68 When we come back, 00:12:31.71\00:12:33.05 we'll leave the bush and head to Zambia's fourth largest city 00:12:33.08\00:12:36.38 where a small school is making a big impact. 00:12:36.42\00:12:39.75 It may come as no surprise to you 00:12:51.47\00:12:53.60 that in the past couple of months, 00:12:53.64\00:12:55.44 as many people have had to shelter in place, 00:12:55.47\00:12:57.91 social media usage has gone up. 00:12:57.94\00:13:00.64 If you're one of those folks 00:13:00.68\00:13:02.01 that are spending more time on Facebook and Instagram, 00:13:02.04\00:13:04.75 why not spend some of your time with us? 00:13:04.78\00:13:07.25 Follow Maranatha on Facebook to 00:13:45.29\00:13:47.56 and the mission of Maranatha. 00:13:47.59\00:13:49.32 The city of Kabwe 00:13:53.96\00:13:55.30 sits in the Central Province of Zambia. 00:13:55.33\00:13:57.37 It was founded as a mining town. 00:13:57.40\00:13:59.27 And although the mines have closed, 00:13:59.30\00:14:00.94 commercial farming and other industries 00:14:00.97\00:14:02.87 continue to fuel Zambia's fourth biggest city. 00:14:02.90\00:14:06.71 Kabwe has a vibrant Adventist community. 00:14:06.74\00:14:09.31 Drive throughout the city 00:14:09.34\00:14:10.68 and you'll encounter dozens of Adventist churches 00:14:10.71\00:14:12.81 of all shapes and sizes. 00:14:12.85\00:14:15.22 But for many years, 00:14:15.25\00:14:16.58 the Adventist community 00:14:16.62\00:14:17.95 was lacking one major component, a school. 00:14:17.99\00:14:21.09 The schools that we had here are secular schools, 00:14:21.12\00:14:24.26 as well as Catholic schools, basically. 00:14:24.29\00:14:27.90 Now what used to disturb most of the Adventists, 00:14:27.93\00:14:32.40 particularly our conference workers, 00:14:32.43\00:14:34.60 was the issue of having 00:14:34.64\00:14:36.40 those secular meetings on the Sabbath. 00:14:36.44\00:14:40.94 Every time there's PTA, on Sabbath. 00:14:40.98\00:14:45.41 There's this kind of gathering, Sabbath. 00:14:45.45\00:14:47.68 Hey! 00:14:47.72\00:14:49.05 And it really disturbed them. 00:14:49.08\00:14:51.69 every time they have to excuse themselves. 00:14:51.72\00:14:53.15 "No, Sorry." 00:14:53.19\00:14:54.52 They have to beat about the bush. 00:14:54.56\00:14:56.36 "I won't be available. 00:14:56.39\00:14:57.76 I'm traveling to such and such place. 00:14:57.79\00:14:59.86 There's this function." 00:14:59.89\00:15:01.26 Hence, there was need now that we come about, 00:15:01.30\00:15:04.47 we come out with this school for, 00:15:04.50\00:15:06.40 this church school. 00:15:06.43\00:15:08.70 In 2006, 00:15:08.74\00:15:10.14 the Kabwe Adventist School began with 64 students. 00:15:10.17\00:15:13.91 Each passing week was a matter of prayer 00:15:13.94\00:15:16.61 as no one knew if the school would survive. 00:15:16.64\00:15:19.75 And it began as a real baby. 00:15:19.78\00:15:24.12 No one was sure 00:15:24.15\00:15:25.49 that this school would grow up to what it is now. 00:15:25.52\00:15:28.22 Okay. 00:15:28.26\00:15:29.59 Struggling with enrollment, 64 pupils. 00:15:29.62\00:15:33.96 That's how our school progressed. 00:15:34.00\00:15:38.80 It opened to the public on eight of January. 00:15:38.83\00:15:42.27 And the pupils in the class 00:15:42.30\00:15:44.67 maybe here, there are three, other class, there are four. 00:15:44.71\00:15:47.61 And you would wonder, 00:15:47.64\00:15:48.98 "Is this school ever going to be filled?" 00:15:49.01\00:15:51.51 But despite the small size, 00:15:51.55\00:15:53.25 they were devoted to providing the best, 00:15:53.28\00:15:55.35 most well-rounded education in town. 00:15:55.38\00:15:59.02 And enrollment grew. 00:15:59.05\00:16:01.46 Why? 00:16:01.49\00:16:02.82 Because it clicked in everyone's mind. 00:16:02.86\00:16:05.99 Most of our parents around that Adventist education, 00:16:06.03\00:16:12.53 basically it is a two-sided coin. 00:16:12.57\00:16:16.37 Okay. 00:16:16.40\00:16:17.74 The development of a spiritual being 00:16:17.77\00:16:19.71 as well as excellence in the world that we live in. 00:16:19.74\00:16:24.31 13 years later, the baby school is thriving. 00:16:24.35\00:16:27.95 enrollment has grown to more than 500. 00:16:27.98\00:16:30.29 And the campus now offers education 00:16:30.32\00:16:32.12 from preschool through secondary school. 00:16:32.15\00:16:35.16 Over the last decade, 00:16:35.19\00:16:36.52 the Kabwe Adventist School has set itself apart 00:16:36.56\00:16:39.06 in the sea of education choices in town. 00:16:39.09\00:16:42.16 Jericho, Jericho, 00:16:42.20\00:16:45.20 Jericho Joshua fought the battle of Jericho... 00:16:45.23\00:16:46.74 Local Adventist families aren't the only one 00:16:46.77\00:16:49.14 sending their children to study there. 00:16:49.17\00:16:51.21 Currently, 65% of the student population is non-Adventist. 00:16:51.24\00:16:55.78 The local community at large 00:16:55.81\00:16:57.15 has discovered high quality education 00:16:57.18\00:16:59.28 offered on the campus. 00:16:59.31\00:17:01.65 The differences are quite subtle, right. 00:17:01.68\00:17:04.22 So we have the holistic approach 00:17:04.25\00:17:06.19 of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual faculties. 00:17:06.22\00:17:09.16 So when we are training their hands, 00:17:09.19\00:17:10.53 we're giving them a skillset 00:17:10.56\00:17:11.89 that other schools do not offer. 00:17:11.93\00:17:14.10 Mostly, people send their kids to school 00:17:14.13\00:17:16.16 just to get the intellectual aspect. 00:17:16.20\00:17:19.03 Have your kids, 00:17:19.07\00:17:20.77 you know, 00:17:20.80\00:17:22.14 astute and get them very schooled and learned. 00:17:22.17\00:17:26.14 But there's also a spiritual aspect to it. 00:17:26.17\00:17:27.81 There are certain challenges that people face in life, 00:17:27.84\00:17:30.15 that's your intellect might not get you through. 00:17:30.18\00:17:32.55 So you need that spiritual aspect. 00:17:32.58\00:17:34.62 You also need this skillset 00:17:34.65\00:17:35.98 to help you navigate through life's problems 00:17:36.02\00:17:37.82 and challenges quite easily. 00:17:37.85\00:17:39.59 One of the items that contributes 00:17:39.62\00:17:41.09 to the holistic education 00:17:41.12\00:17:42.56 offered at the Kabwe Adventist school 00:17:42.59\00:17:44.66 is an intentional focus on spiritual development. 00:17:44.69\00:17:47.73 The school staff includes a team of chaplains 00:17:47.76\00:17:49.70 led by most Mawuse Michello. 00:17:49.73\00:17:51.93 They care for the spiritual needs 00:17:51.97\00:17:53.47 of each and every person connected with the school. 00:17:53.50\00:17:56.47 So my function is to offer 00:17:56.50\00:17:58.77 the spiritual aspect of the school. 00:17:58.81\00:18:00.18 So remember we have the mental aspect, 00:18:00.21\00:18:02.71 we have the physical aspect. 00:18:02.74\00:18:04.71 So I help out with both the spiritual and the social 00:18:04.75\00:18:07.75 integration of the child. 00:18:07.78\00:18:09.78 And not just the pupils themselves, 00:18:09.82\00:18:11.15 but also the staff members. 00:18:11.19\00:18:12.85 So we do works like counseling 00:18:12.89\00:18:15.92 for both staff members and pupils. 00:18:15.96\00:18:18.93 And even parents when they do see fit. 00:18:18.96\00:18:22.26 We do talk to parents 00:18:22.30\00:18:23.63 when they come to get reports for their children 00:18:23.67\00:18:26.00 and they do visit our office as well 00:18:26.03\00:18:28.00 just to help them understand that we need a balance 00:18:28.04\00:18:30.37 between the homeschooling and the actual space 00:18:30.41\00:18:34.11 that we have here between the teacher and the child. 00:18:34.14\00:18:37.15 The chaplain's work is basically 00:18:37.18\00:18:38.91 quite massive at this place. 00:18:38.95\00:18:42.52 Mawuse has learned that 00:18:42.55\00:18:43.89 ensuring a child's emotional and spiritual needs are met 00:18:43.92\00:18:47.09 makes for more engaged students 00:18:47.12\00:18:49.39 encouraging and interacting with students 00:18:49.42\00:18:51.79 as well as visiting families in their homes 00:18:51.83\00:18:53.70 is a regular part of his work. 00:18:53.73\00:18:55.56 in this time and age in which we are living in, 00:18:55.60\00:18:57.70 a lot of homes are broken. 00:18:57.73\00:18:59.97 Those that are being made are not made 00:19:00.00\00:19:02.24 on the spiritual stance that they should, 00:19:02.27\00:19:04.47 so it affects the well-being of the child psychologically, 00:19:04.51\00:19:08.38 it affects them socially. 00:19:08.41\00:19:09.74 They become very disruptive. 00:19:09.78\00:19:12.48 But if we can bring in that component 00:19:12.51\00:19:13.92 where we have a school, 00:19:13.95\00:19:15.28 where we build good citizens and candidates 00:19:15.32\00:19:17.72 for heaven as well, 00:19:17.75\00:19:19.09 it actually does a lot for this community 00:19:19.12\00:19:21.92 and the world to come as well. 00:19:21.96\00:19:23.32 So we need more than just this school, 00:19:23.36\00:19:27.00 but more schools to actually open up 00:19:27.03\00:19:28.36 and help with the social well-being 00:19:28.40\00:19:31.17 of the community at large. 00:19:31.20\00:19:32.97 The quality of education offered on the Kabwe campus 00:19:33.00\00:19:35.70 and the nurturing staff 00:19:35.74\00:19:37.07 has families flocking to the school. 00:19:37.11\00:19:39.71 When I first came here, 00:19:39.74\00:19:41.28 I did a sample 00:19:41.31\00:19:42.98 because I really wanted quality education in the kids. 00:19:43.01\00:19:48.88 So when I went around, 00:19:48.92\00:19:51.09 I was told there is Kabwe Adventist School 00:19:51.12\00:19:53.36 being a Christian school. 00:19:53.39\00:19:55.32 So I went there to look for space for the kids. 00:19:55.36\00:20:01.26 It was not easy 00:20:01.30\00:20:02.63 because space there are limited. 00:20:02.66\00:20:04.63 And they accepted me to take the children there. 00:20:04.67\00:20:09.94 Chileshe has three daughters 00:20:09.97\00:20:11.74 all attending the Kabwe Adventist School. 00:20:11.77\00:20:14.54 He lives 30 minutes outside the town, 00:20:14.58\00:20:16.68 which makes the commute to school a bit challenging. 00:20:16.71\00:20:19.11 But to him, the drive is worth it. 00:20:19.15\00:20:21.78 Education is very important. 00:20:21.82\00:20:23.59 Me, I never had that chance. 00:20:23.62\00:20:28.29 My parents, 00:20:28.32\00:20:29.66 they didn't work well on my foundation. 00:20:29.69\00:20:33.16 So I did want to create 00:20:33.19\00:20:37.03 a very good foundation for them. 00:20:37.07\00:20:39.60 And it's an investment. 00:20:39.63\00:20:41.40 I'm trying to budget for it. 00:20:41.44\00:20:43.74 I really want to invest in them 00:20:43.77\00:20:45.17 so that even when I die, once they finish school, 00:20:45.21\00:20:48.94 they're going to survive. 00:20:48.98\00:20:50.31 So education is the best gift that I can give a child. 00:20:50.35\00:20:54.62 So I've not even looked at the distance. 00:20:54.65\00:20:57.19 It's far from here to town. 00:20:57.22\00:20:59.62 But I'm one of those 00:20:59.65\00:21:00.99 we're trying at least to give quality education. 00:21:01.02\00:21:04.79 Chileshe's assessment of the school 00:21:04.83\00:21:06.46 is shared by other parents 00:21:06.49\00:21:07.86 who want the best education for their children. 00:21:07.90\00:21:10.63 I looked around the schools around Kabwe, 00:21:10.67\00:21:15.14 but when I found that the quality of the education 00:21:15.17\00:21:19.27 you're providing there is much more qualitative 00:21:19.31\00:21:22.28 than any other schools, that's what brought me there. 00:21:22.31\00:21:28.72 The school has impacted me in a very big way 00:21:28.75\00:21:33.15 because you are providing 00:21:33.19\00:21:37.53 that kind of holistic type of education. 00:21:37.56\00:21:43.30 You get a child 00:21:43.33\00:21:44.67 but you treat that child like your own. 00:21:44.70\00:21:48.70 Then by the time they're coming out of your school, 00:21:48.74\00:21:53.27 they are real citizens of our Zambia. 00:21:53.31\00:21:58.38 Gordon's daughter Precious is in secondary school 00:21:58.41\00:22:01.05 and is the top student in her class. 00:22:01.08\00:22:03.08 He is grateful 00:22:03.12\00:22:04.45 for the excellent academic program at Kabwe. 00:22:04.49\00:22:06.62 And the icing on the cake is the relationship they build 00:22:06.65\00:22:09.36 with the school's faculty and staff. 00:22:09.39\00:22:11.93 We are even good friends with the teachers. 00:22:11.96\00:22:14.73 I know their contact numbers, they've been into my home, 00:22:14.76\00:22:18.43 I've been to the school. 00:22:18.47\00:22:19.80 And each time there is anything concerning our child, 00:22:19.83\00:22:24.54 they contact me. 00:22:24.57\00:22:26.94 Chileshe, Gordon, 00:22:26.98\00:22:28.31 and their families are not Adventist, 00:22:28.34\00:22:30.21 but they feel fortunate 00:22:30.25\00:22:31.58 to be part of the Kabwe Adventist School family. 00:22:31.61\00:22:34.22 Demand at the school is high, but space is very limited. 00:22:34.25\00:22:38.42 Parents, they really want to take their children 00:22:38.45\00:22:40.12 at Kabwe Adventist School. 00:22:40.16\00:22:42.46 But there is no space, and the staff, 00:22:42.49\00:22:47.43 they have restricted themselves in growing their number. 00:22:47.46\00:22:51.90 They have put the control measure there. 00:22:51.93\00:22:54.60 They don't just accept anyone because of their space. 00:22:54.64\00:22:58.61 So they cannot accommodate the classrooms, 00:22:58.64\00:23:02.04 the space is not enough for expansion. 00:23:02.08\00:23:05.55 Because now we also have a challenge of enrollments. 00:23:05.58\00:23:08.35 Because many people are coming, okay. 00:23:08.38\00:23:09.85 They have realized that Adventist education is sweet. 00:23:09.88\00:23:16.12 They want to taste that sweetness. 00:23:16.16\00:23:19.56 And every time we just say, "No. There's no space." 00:23:19.59\00:23:23.37 The ideal design is for about 450. 00:23:23.40\00:23:28.57 But we do extend because of the large amount of people 00:23:28.60\00:23:32.34 who want to bring the kids here. 00:23:32.37\00:23:33.98 So you have quite a long list of people 00:23:34.01\00:23:36.34 who are on the waiting list, 00:23:36.38\00:23:37.98 in case someone goes off on transfer, 00:23:38.01\00:23:39.38 they will easily bring their child here. 00:23:39.41\00:23:41.88 But we don't have space for everyone as yet. 00:23:41.92\00:23:44.59 There are more than 500 students 00:23:44.62\00:23:46.45 meeting in a space designed for less 00:23:46.49\00:23:48.66 and a long waiting list for admission. 00:23:48.69\00:23:51.16 The school needed to grow 00:23:51.19\00:23:52.93 but they had no resources to do so. 00:23:52.96\00:23:55.06 Plus, the current campus is landlocked 00:23:55.10\00:23:57.07 with no physical space to expand. 00:23:57.10\00:23:59.70 From 2009 to 2014, 00:23:59.73\00:24:02.40 Maranatha constructed seven schools in Zambia. 00:24:02.44\00:24:05.61 When the growing need for churches and schools 00:24:05.64\00:24:07.64 brought us back to the country in 2018, 00:24:07.68\00:24:10.01 the expansion of the Kabwe School 00:24:10.05\00:24:11.81 was high on the list of needs. 00:24:11.85\00:24:13.95 Local church leaders identified a large plot of land 00:24:13.98\00:24:16.85 and Maranatha quickly began construction 00:24:16.89\00:24:18.82 on a 12-classroom campus. 00:24:18.85\00:24:21.09 The new site will be for elementary students, 00:24:21.12\00:24:23.29 moving them out of cramped facilities 00:24:23.32\00:24:25.23 and into spacious classrooms. 00:24:25.26\00:24:27.06 This also enables the secondary school 00:24:27.10\00:24:29.00 to expand into the existing elementary classrooms. 00:24:29.03\00:24:32.57 When you go into the new campus, 00:24:32.60\00:24:34.07 you see the new buildings that are coming up. 00:24:34.10\00:24:36.54 It actually gives you hope 00:24:36.57\00:24:37.94 that we have more spaces and more doors 00:24:37.97\00:24:40.74 that are open to allow pupils to come through. 00:24:40.78\00:24:43.55 And the beauty of it is, 00:24:43.58\00:24:45.58 for every child that will go through, 00:24:45.61\00:24:48.18 they'll have an opportunity 00:24:48.22\00:24:49.55 to actually meet Christ in the classroom. 00:24:49.58\00:24:52.15 So the more blocks you have, 00:24:52.19\00:24:54.02 the more opportunities for Christ you have 00:24:54.06\00:24:55.82 to expose Him to the community at large. 00:24:55.86\00:24:57.99 Most of them will never have an opportunity 00:24:58.03\00:24:59.39 to get to a church building 00:24:59.43\00:25:00.76 to actually listen to the gospel. 00:25:00.80\00:25:02.43 But when they come to Christian school, 00:25:02.46\00:25:03.80 that's the one opportunity they have. 00:25:03.83\00:25:05.60 So you actually have more of an opportunity 00:25:05.63\00:25:07.40 to minister to them and to share Christ with them. 00:25:07.44\00:25:09.80 So it's beautiful 00:25:09.84\00:25:11.17 when we see the campus growing that much. 00:25:11.21\00:25:12.87 We have more spaces open 00:25:12.91\00:25:14.94 to actually preach the Gospel to them. 00:25:14.98\00:25:18.28 This school, it is God Himself that is building it. 00:25:18.31\00:25:24.22 But He cannot come from heaven to come and mold bricks. 00:25:24.25\00:25:26.86 But through His agents, He's able to do that. 00:25:26.89\00:25:29.26 So the coming of Maranatha International, 00:25:29.29\00:25:31.66 it's not a human dream. 00:25:31.69\00:25:35.73 No. No, no, no, no, no. 00:25:35.76\00:25:37.73 God Himself puts things in place. 00:25:37.77\00:25:40.90 He has got a plan for everything. 00:25:40.94\00:25:42.90 And at every moment, 00:25:42.94\00:25:44.77 He puts things in place and they just fit in. 00:25:44.81\00:25:48.61 Maranatha's work to provide churches, 00:25:48.64\00:25:50.71 schools and water wells is answering prayers 00:25:50.75\00:25:53.72 all over Zambia. 00:25:53.75\00:25:55.25 But we need your help. 00:25:55.28\00:25:57.72 Help us provide water 00:25:57.75\00:25:59.12 to communities that are thirsty. 00:25:59.15\00:26:04.36 Help us expand opportunities 00:26:04.39\00:26:06.33 for children to learn about their world. 00:26:06.36\00:26:08.33 And the princess gave him a name. 00:26:11.70\00:26:15.97 Do you know the name? 00:26:16.00\00:26:17.54 Who can guess? 00:26:17.57\00:26:18.91 Me. You? 00:26:18.94\00:26:20.28 Moses. Moses. 00:26:20.31\00:26:21.64 Help us spread hope 00:26:21.68\00:26:23.08 through the construction of churches. 00:26:23.11\00:26:24.95 Projects in Zambia are in need of funding. 00:26:24.98\00:26:27.55 And you can help by making a donation. 00:26:27.58\00:26:30.85 Many of the people who walk through those doors 00:26:30.89\00:26:32.95 who never knew Christ at the very start, 00:26:32.99\00:26:35.22 once they get to know Him 00:26:35.26\00:26:36.59 and they make their choice for Him, 00:26:36.62\00:26:38.16 it would be nice for you to actually get those messages. 00:26:38.19\00:26:41.73 When you get to heaven, someone come and say, 00:26:41.76\00:26:43.10 "Thank you for giving." 00:26:43.13\00:26:44.60 So it's an opportunity for us to actually serve humanity. 00:26:44.63\00:26:47.70 You might never be the best of preachers, 00:26:47.74\00:26:49.64 you might never make it to history books 00:26:49.67\00:26:52.04 to be known to be people 00:26:52.07\00:26:54.04 who've helped humanity so much. 00:26:54.08\00:26:56.08 But when we give the donations that we can, 00:26:56.11\00:26:58.25 we come and help build the school, 00:26:58.28\00:27:00.12 we send our kids to this place, 00:27:00.15\00:27:01.95 those are the few contributions 00:27:01.98\00:27:03.32 that will actually make so much of a difference 00:27:03.35\00:27:05.35 to people around. 00:27:05.39\00:27:06.72 So making a difference in just one child's life 00:27:06.76\00:27:08.42 is very important. 00:27:08.46\00:27:09.79 And I would ask you to try and do it. 00:27:09.82\00:27:12.29 Yeah, it's an opportunity in life to serve God 00:27:12.33\00:27:15.06 in just this small space. 00:27:15.10\00:27:17.73 You may not realize even as Maranatha, 00:27:17.77\00:27:19.53 the work that you are doing now, 00:27:19.57\00:27:20.90 how far it will go, 00:27:20.94\00:27:22.27 and how far it goes in the minds of the people. 00:27:22.30\00:27:24.44 So it is quite important 00:27:24.47\00:27:25.81 that Maranatha continues 00:27:25.84\00:27:27.18 building these structures here because, 00:27:27.21\00:27:28.84 at the end of the day, 00:27:28.88\00:27:30.21 people praise God 00:27:30.25\00:27:31.58 for this work that you are doing. 00:27:31.61\00:27:32.95
