Hi, I'm Hilary Macias with the Maranatha Minute. 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.40 For the fifth year 00:00:03.43\00:00:04.77 Maranatha returned to Chattanooga, Tennessee 00:00:04.80\00:00:07.00 for a special mission program called Go Maranatha. 00:00:07.04\00:00:10.17 More than 600 people attended the event 00:00:10.21\00:00:12.27 where church leaders, volunteers and Maranatha staff 00:00:12.31\00:00:15.34 shared reports and testimonies from around the world. 00:00:15.38\00:00:18.25 Acclaimed men's chorus Christian Edition 00:00:18.28\00:00:20.02 blessed the audience 00:00:20.05\00:00:21.38 with several musical selections. 00:00:21.42\00:00:23.12 In addition to inspiring presentations and videos, 00:00:23.15\00:00:25.95 the event also provided a venue 00:00:25.99\00:00:27.56 for people to reconnect with friends 00:00:27.59\00:00:29.62 and gain valuable information 00:00:29.66\00:00:31.06 about upcoming volunteer opportunities 00:00:31.09\00:00:33.09 from Maranatha staff. 00:00:33.13\00:00:35.00 Maranatha will host another opportunity 00:00:35.03\00:00:37.03 to learn more about our work around the world 00:00:37.07\00:00:39.03 at Mission Maranatha, 00:00:39.07\00:00:40.67 our annual convention. 00:00:40.70\00:00:42.30 This year the event will take place September 18 and 19 00:00:42.34\00:00:45.47 in Sacramento, California, 00:00:45.51\00:00:47.34 and will feature volunteer testimonies, 00:00:47.38\00:00:49.31 country reports and music 00:00:49.34\00:00:50.68 by Oakwood University's award-winning choir, 00:00:50.71\00:00:53.21 The Aeolians. 00:00:53.25\00:00:54.58 This event is free and open to everyone. 00:00:54.62\00:00:57.15 We hope to see you there. 00:00:57.19\00:00:58.52 More than 16 million people live in the country of Zambia. 00:01:50.97\00:01:54.08 Although this sub-Saharan country 00:01:57.38\00:01:58.91 is most famous for wonders such as Victoria Falls, 00:01:58.95\00:02:02.08 most people can be found living far off the beaten path. 00:02:02.12\00:02:05.42 Lilian lives in the village of Lwendge 00:02:20.67\00:02:22.50 with her husband and their 10 children. 00:02:22.54\00:02:25.34 A teacher by profession, 00:02:25.37\00:02:26.71 Lilian moved to the village years ago 00:02:26.74\00:02:28.31 to care for her disabled father. 00:02:28.34\00:02:32.25 Now, she makes a meager living by traveling into the forest, 00:02:32.28\00:02:35.78 cutting down trees and making charcoal. 00:02:35.82\00:02:38.99 Her situation is not ideal. 00:02:39.02\00:02:41.49 Farming or raising livestock are not options due to drought, 00:02:41.52\00:02:45.13 lack of financial resources and clean water. 00:02:45.16\00:02:47.46 In fact, the nearest well is a few kilometers away 00:02:50.47\00:02:53.20 and Lilian must make several trips a day 00:02:53.23\00:02:55.40 to provide water for her family. 00:02:55.44\00:02:59.57 We suffer a lot here 00:02:59.61\00:03:01.88 because the water is very deep. 00:03:01.91\00:03:07.42 You can't dig with hands. 00:03:07.45\00:03:10.05 It's very difficult anyway. 00:03:10.09\00:03:12.89 But we have to do it because water is life. 00:03:12.92\00:03:16.52 Despite the difficulties, 00:03:25.00\00:03:26.60 Lilian has found strength 00:03:26.63\00:03:28.10 through her faith connection to God and her local church. 00:03:28.14\00:03:31.97 It's important because I find it easy, 00:03:32.01\00:03:36.98 when I am in difficulties, 00:03:37.01\00:03:38.71 I find that my members are the ones to empower me. 00:03:38.75\00:03:42.32 And that encouraged me also to do so, 00:03:42.35\00:03:45.75 so that those who are in difficulties, 00:03:45.79\00:03:50.56 they can also be empowered as I was. 00:03:50.59\00:03:54.66 Lilian attends the Lwendge Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:03:54.70\00:03:57.83 This congregation started 15 years ago 00:03:57.87\00:04:00.24 and membership has grown to 78 members. 00:04:00.27\00:04:03.67 They are zealous about spreading God's love 00:04:03.71\00:04:05.91 to their neighbors. 00:04:05.94\00:04:08.01 The passion this group has for sharing Christ 00:04:08.04\00:04:10.25 is something you'll find all over the country. 00:04:10.28\00:04:12.35 Because of this, 00:04:12.38\00:04:13.72 Zambia is an area of the world 00:04:13.75\00:04:15.08 with one of the largest Adventist memberships. 00:04:15.12\00:04:18.72 What motivates them to become part of the church 00:04:18.75\00:04:21.06 is actually the knowledge that they receive 00:04:21.09\00:04:23.32 that Jesus loves them 00:04:23.36\00:04:25.39 even before them decided to love Jesus. 00:04:25.43\00:04:28.40 But then He was the one who first decided to love them. 00:04:28.43\00:04:31.43 And so when they realize that actually 00:04:31.47\00:04:33.40 we have someone who loves us, or who loved us before, 00:04:33.44\00:04:36.60 then they are motivated to join the church. 00:04:36.64\00:04:40.38 This rapidly growing church creates challenges. 00:04:40.41\00:04:43.58 Eddie Himoonde is the pastor of the Lwendge congregation, 00:04:43.61\00:04:47.22 but they are just one of the many groups 00:04:47.25\00:04:49.25 he is responsible for. 00:04:49.28\00:04:51.35 In my district, I have 35 organized churches, 00:04:51.39\00:04:54.92 and the area is about 200 kilometers apart. 00:04:54.96\00:04:59.89 Yes, the whole district membership is about 11,260. 00:04:59.93\00:05:05.03 Caring for more than 11,000 members 00:05:05.07\00:05:07.34 is very demanding. 00:05:07.37\00:05:08.80 Visiting the numerous churches in his area 00:05:08.84\00:05:10.97 is a difficult endeavor, 00:05:11.01\00:05:12.34 especially since Pastor Himoonde 00:05:12.37\00:05:13.78 doesn't have access to reliable transportation. 00:05:13.81\00:05:16.95 Sometimes I take maybe a week or two weeks, 00:05:16.98\00:05:20.32 just walking to the furthest church, 00:05:20.35\00:05:23.42 because I don't have a car, 00:05:23.45\00:05:24.92 I don't have a motorbike, I walk. 00:05:24.95\00:05:28.02 And sometimes members, sometimes who agree, 00:05:28.06\00:05:30.13 they come and pick me up on their motorcycle. 00:05:30.16\00:05:32.36 They cycle me to that church. 00:05:32.39\00:05:33.73 But if there's no one 00:05:33.76\00:05:35.10 who's having even a bicycle in that area, 00:05:35.13\00:05:37.07 then I have to walk through, I sleep on the way, 00:05:37.10\00:05:39.57 wake up in the morning and then continue moving 00:05:39.60\00:05:41.50 until I reach to that church. 00:05:41.54\00:05:43.61 Then I begin visiting the members now, 00:05:43.64\00:05:45.61 one on one, praying with them, 00:05:45.64\00:05:47.74 seeing how they are doing and encouraging them. 00:05:47.78\00:05:50.51 Then I get back to my home again. 00:05:50.55\00:05:52.68 The large area makes visits few and far between. 00:05:52.71\00:05:57.05 In a year it's once. 00:05:57.09\00:05:59.35 Yes. 00:05:59.39\00:06:00.72 On average it's once because these 35 organized churches. 00:06:00.76\00:06:03.12 And then I still have smaller churches again, 00:06:03.16\00:06:05.33 about 20 of them, 00:06:05.36\00:06:07.40 which also need my attention. 00:06:07.43\00:06:08.83 So if I visit this church here, 00:06:08.86\00:06:10.57 for me to rotate back to this church, 00:06:10.60\00:06:12.93 it's a challenge. 00:06:12.97\00:06:14.44 So what helps me basically is to train the laymen. 00:06:14.47\00:06:18.37 Laymen are well trained, well organized 00:06:18.41\00:06:20.38 that even if I'm not there, 00:06:20.41\00:06:21.84 they'll still carry on with activities. 00:06:21.88\00:06:23.41 And then they just give me the reports. 00:06:23.45\00:06:25.38 Unless there is something is so much challenging, 00:06:25.41\00:06:27.02 then they call me. 00:06:27.05\00:06:28.68 I quickly come to their aid. 00:06:28.72\00:06:30.72 Pastor Himoonde relies 00:06:36.76\00:06:38.09 on dedicated members like Lilian 00:06:38.13\00:06:39.79 to keep the churches alive and vibrant. 00:06:39.83\00:06:42.16 But one element many congregations 00:06:42.20\00:06:44.33 are still missing 00:06:44.37\00:06:45.70 is anadequate place to worship. 00:06:45.73\00:06:47.74 Although some groups 00:06:47.77\00:06:49.10 are able to build church structures, 00:06:49.14\00:06:50.71 many are left worshiping under trees 00:06:50.74\00:06:52.87 or in simple shelters 00:06:52.91\00:06:54.24 like the members have built in the Lwendge. 00:06:54.28\00:06:57.85 The challenge that I face when such incidents happened 00:06:57.88\00:07:02.35 where we evangelize, maybe public campaign, 00:07:02.38\00:07:04.62 then there people give themselves. 00:07:04.65\00:07:06.59 But then when they come to the actual church, 00:07:06.62\00:07:08.99 they find that actually 00:07:09.02\00:07:10.36 where we are worshiping is not conducive. 00:07:10.39\00:07:15.16 There are no seats, 00:07:15.20\00:07:17.13 they are worshipping under the tree 00:07:17.17\00:07:18.50 or maybe under the grass, 00:07:18.53\00:07:20.30 then it becomes a challenge for them to stay on. 00:07:20.34\00:07:23.81 They feel like, 00:07:23.84\00:07:25.44 they cannot really stay on in this church. 00:07:25.47\00:07:28.28 They need a better structure. 00:07:28.31\00:07:29.68 We have some 00:07:29.71\00:07:31.05 that actually leave this place 00:07:31.08\00:07:32.51 to go and worship in some far distant church 00:07:32.55\00:07:35.52 because there they have 00:07:35.55\00:07:36.89 at least a structure they have built. 00:07:36.92\00:07:38.95 But here they feel like, 00:07:38.99\00:07:40.82 "No. We cannot worship our God in this scenario." 00:07:40.86\00:07:44.39 The challenges Pastor Himoonde faces 00:07:44.43\00:07:46.29 are echoed all across Zambia. 00:07:46.33\00:07:48.50 There just aren't enough churches. 00:07:48.53\00:07:50.97 From 2009 to 2015, 00:07:51.00\00:07:53.27 Maranatha responded to a request 00:07:53.30\00:07:55.10 from the Adventist Church in Zambia 00:07:55.14\00:07:56.97 and built more than 300 churches 00:07:57.01\00:07:59.07 all over the country. 00:07:59.11\00:08:00.44 Since then, 00:08:00.48\00:08:01.81 Adventist membership in Zambia 00:08:01.84\00:08:03.18 has grown to more than 1.2 million people. 00:08:03.21\00:08:06.48 But the rapid growth means 00:08:06.51\00:08:07.98 there are still congregations 00:08:08.02\00:08:09.35 without proper places to worship. 00:08:09.38\00:08:11.49 In 2018 Maranatha returned to Zambia 00:08:11.52\00:08:14.42 to once again build more churches. 00:08:14.46\00:08:17.03 This requires a dedicated local construction team 00:08:17.06\00:08:19.86 that travels from town to town 00:08:19.89\00:08:21.63 bringing the hope of a church to numerous congregations. 00:08:21.66\00:08:25.00 The process of building churches 00:08:25.03\00:08:26.63 includes two visits from the crew. 00:08:26.67\00:08:28.94 First, they traveled to the site 00:08:28.97\00:08:30.71 to install metal bases anchored in concrete. 00:08:30.74\00:08:33.11 This ensures that the building has a solid foundation. 00:08:33.14\00:08:35.81 Once this base is hardened and cured, 00:08:41.32\00:08:43.22 the crew loads up 00:08:43.25\00:08:44.59 the necessary pieces for the structure and roof 00:08:44.62\00:08:46.59 and return to complete the church. 00:08:46.62\00:08:49.36 Today, they're headed to Lwendge. 00:08:49.39\00:08:52.16 As the day passes, work steadily progresses. 00:08:52.19\00:08:54.96 The crew is joined by church members 00:08:55.00\00:08:56.70 and other people from the community. 00:08:56.73\00:08:58.63 Everyone is excited 00:08:58.67\00:09:00.00 about the new development in their town. 00:09:00.04\00:09:02.90 Having a proper structure in this area 00:09:02.94\00:09:04.81 actually is evangelism on its own. 00:09:04.84\00:09:07.74 Because like now, we are doing here at Lwendge, 00:09:07.78\00:09:10.78 Maranatha is giving us this structure, 00:09:10.81\00:09:13.11 it becomes easier for me even to evangelize, 00:09:13.15\00:09:15.48 because just the structure itself 00:09:15.52\00:09:17.09 will be preaching to the people around here. 00:09:17.12\00:09:19.62 Already people are already coming here 00:09:19.65\00:09:21.49 and seeing what is happening. 00:09:21.52\00:09:22.86 They just heard the noise here, the works that are going on. 00:09:22.89\00:09:25.39 People are asking, 00:09:25.43\00:09:26.76 "What is happening there? What is happening there?" 00:09:26.80\00:09:28.13 Then they believe that 00:09:28.16\00:09:29.50 now we are worshipping a true God 00:09:29.53\00:09:30.87 because they have given us a structure. 00:09:30.90\00:09:32.77 And then the people will just come on their own. 00:09:32.80\00:09:35.20 Activity on the construction site 00:09:35.24\00:09:36.71 is already enlarging the Lwendge congregation. 00:09:36.74\00:09:39.64 Several members that had drifted away from the group 00:09:39.67\00:09:41.94 have returned not only to help 00:09:41.98\00:09:43.78 build their new church, 00:09:43.81\00:09:45.15 but to reconnect with God and their church family. 00:09:45.18\00:09:48.02 We are very, very excited as a family, 00:09:48.05\00:09:52.69 not only as a family but the entire community. 00:09:52.72\00:09:56.62 We are very, very, very happy and we really appreciate it, 00:09:56.66\00:10:01.76 the job well done. 00:10:01.80\00:10:04.43 This structure will even change many lives of people 00:10:04.47\00:10:09.90 because what they were crying for has now come. 00:10:09.94\00:10:14.64 God has answered our prayers through you. 00:10:14.68\00:10:19.11 And may God bless you abundantly. 00:10:19.15\00:10:22.72 And I think next time we shall have more members 00:10:22.75\00:10:27.42 than we have right now. 00:10:27.46\00:10:30.26 This simple steel frame is providing not only shelter, 00:10:30.29\00:10:33.43 but hope for congregations all over Zambia. 00:10:33.46\00:10:37.20 It might look simple in their eyes, 00:10:37.23\00:10:39.63 but it is big in this community. 00:10:39.67\00:10:42.47 Because it has never happened before. 00:10:42.50\00:10:44.24 The people have never seen such a structure here. 00:10:44.27\00:10:47.31 You see, even the houses around, 00:10:47.34\00:10:48.94 if you're to move around, 00:10:48.98\00:10:50.31 there are no iron sheets around. 00:10:50.35\00:10:51.68 You just use the grass and stuff. 00:10:51.71\00:10:53.35 So when they see just this simple structure, 00:10:53.38\00:10:55.65 it's not simple as it may look like. 00:10:55.68\00:10:57.85 It is big. It will go a long way. 00:10:57.89\00:11:00.66 The ones that Maranatha provided, 00:11:00.69\00:11:02.32 in the first place people are very happy 00:11:02.36\00:11:03.86 about these structures. 00:11:03.89\00:11:06.03 So they are already calling "Pastor, 00:11:06.06\00:11:07.53 we have already started now molding bricks, 00:11:07.56\00:11:10.20 because we have seen that God has come to our aid." 00:11:10.23\00:11:12.73 They are now mobilizing themselves to mold the bricks, 00:11:12.77\00:11:15.47 burn the bricks and then begin building the walls. 00:11:15.50\00:11:19.57 If you come back next year, 00:11:19.61\00:11:20.94 you will not find them as open as they are now. 00:11:20.98\00:11:25.18 It's Sabbath morning, 00:11:25.21\00:11:26.55 and one of church members are meeting for worship. 00:11:26.58\00:11:28.98 A few weeks ago, 00:11:29.02\00:11:30.35 their worship experience was far different 00:11:30.39\00:11:32.19 as they were meeting under 00:11:32.22\00:11:33.56 a wall-less thatched roofed structure. 00:11:33.59\00:11:35.66 Their attempt at constructing a church 00:11:35.69\00:11:37.36 sits vacant as the group ran out of resources 00:11:37.39\00:11:39.96 and had to abandon their efforts. 00:11:40.00\00:11:42.13 But then Maranatha came and built them a new church 00:11:42.16\00:11:45.53 changing everything for this congregation. 00:11:45.57\00:11:48.44 On the structure when it was built, 00:11:48.47\00:11:50.31 we're motivated. 00:11:50.34\00:11:52.27 We did different kinds of evangelistic programs, 00:11:52.31\00:11:58.18 we invited a lot of people to see the structure 00:11:58.21\00:12:02.75 and how the Adventist movement as Maranatha has helped us. 00:12:02.78\00:12:07.39 It just brought a lot of things to us. 00:12:07.42\00:12:10.39 Yeah, even the way of worship, I think we have improved. 00:12:10.43\00:12:15.73 It is very important that Maranatha continues. 00:12:15.76\00:12:17.97 Actually, I still, 00:12:18.00\00:12:20.74 I'm still going through some pressure now 00:12:20.77\00:12:22.67 because other churches that have heard 00:12:22.70\00:12:24.71 that the Maranatha is building and has built, 00:12:24.74\00:12:26.54 they are saying, 00:12:26.57\00:12:27.91 "When are they coming here also?" 00:12:27.94\00:12:29.34 Because we also need their help. 00:12:29.38\00:12:31.75 When we come back, 00:12:31.78\00:12:33.11 we'll leave the bush 00:12:33.15\00:12:34.48 and head to Zambia's fourth largest city 00:12:34.52\00:12:36.42 where a small school is making a big impact. 00:12:36.45\00:12:39.65 If you're a teenager 00:13:32.67\00:13:34.34 This project is designed for 18-35 year olds, 00:13:34.38\00:13:37.51 and will be headed to Peru 00:13:37.55\00:13:39.05 to build a church in Portachuelo 00:13:39.08\00:13:40.92 from July 23 to August 2. 00:13:40.95\00:13:43.28 In addition to construction, 00:13:43.32\00:13:44.65 we'll also organize community outreach activities. 00:13:44.69\00:13:47.12 Learn more about these mission trips 00:13:47.16\00:13:48.82 and others on our website. 00:13:48.86\00:13:50.19 The city of Kabwe 00:13:54.00\00:13:55.33 sits in the central province of Zambia. 00:13:55.36\00:13:57.43 It was founded as a mining town. 00:13:57.47\00:13:59.33 And although the mines have closed, 00:13:59.37\00:14:01.00 commercial farming and other industries 00:14:01.04\00:14:02.94 continue to fuel Zambia's fourth biggest city. 00:14:02.97\00:14:06.64 Kabwe has a vibrant Adventist community. 00:14:06.68\00:14:09.34 Drive throughout the city 00:14:09.38\00:14:10.71 and you'll encounter dozens of Adventist churches 00:14:10.75\00:14:12.61 of all shapes and sizes. 00:14:12.65\00:14:15.22 But for many years, 00:14:15.25\00:14:16.58 the Adventist community 00:14:16.62\00:14:17.95 was lacking one major component, a school. 00:14:17.99\00:14:21.19 The schools that we had here are secular schools 00:14:21.22\00:14:24.33 as well as Catholic schools, basically. 00:14:24.36\00:14:27.86 Now what used to disturb most of the Adventists, 00:14:27.90\00:14:32.40 particularly our conference workers, 00:14:32.43\00:14:34.57 was the issue of having those secular meetings 00:14:34.60\00:14:38.17 on the Sabbath. 00:14:38.21\00:14:40.98 Every time there's PTA, on Sabbath. 00:14:41.01\00:14:45.41 There's this kind of gathering Sabbath. 00:14:45.45\00:14:47.68 Hey! 00:14:47.72\00:14:49.05 And it really disturbed them. 00:14:49.08\00:14:51.72 Every time they have to excuse themselves. 00:14:51.75\00:14:53.15 "No. Sorry." 00:14:53.19\00:14:54.92 They have to beat about the bush. 00:14:54.96\00:14:56.39 "I won't be available. 00:14:56.42\00:14:57.76 I'm traveling to such and such a place. 00:14:57.79\00:14:59.89 There's this function." 00:14:59.93\00:15:01.33 Hence, there was need now that we come about to, 00:15:01.36\00:15:04.47 we come out with this school for, 00:15:04.50\00:15:06.74 this church school. 00:15:06.77\00:15:08.70 In 2006, 00:15:08.74\00:15:10.17 the Kabwe Adventist School began with 64 students. 00:15:10.21\00:15:13.88 Each passing week was a matter of prayer 00:15:13.91\00:15:16.58 as no one knew if the school would survive. 00:15:16.61\00:15:19.75 And it began as a real baby. 00:15:19.78\00:15:24.42 No one was sure that this school would grow up 00:15:24.45\00:15:26.59 what it is now. 00:15:26.62\00:15:28.09 Okay. 00:15:28.12\00:15:29.46 Struggling with enrollment, 64 pupils. 00:15:29.49\00:15:34.00 That's how our school progressed. 00:15:34.03\00:15:38.90 It opened to the public on eight of January. 00:15:38.93\00:15:42.20 And the pupils in the class maybe here there are three, 00:15:42.24\00:15:46.14 other class there are four. 00:15:46.17\00:15:47.64 And you would wonder, 00:15:47.68\00:15:49.01 "Is this school ever going to be filled?" 00:15:49.04\00:15:51.58 But despite the small size, 00:15:51.61\00:15:53.35 they were devoted to providing the best, 00:15:53.38\00:15:55.25 most well-rounded education in town. 00:15:55.28\00:15:58.95 And enrollment grew. 00:15:58.99\00:16:01.36 Why? 00:16:01.39\00:16:02.72 Because it clicked in everyone's mind. 00:16:02.76\00:16:05.99 Most of our parents around that Adventist education, 00:16:06.03\00:16:12.43 basically, it is a two-sided coin. 00:16:12.47\00:16:16.37 Okay. 00:16:16.40\00:16:17.74 The development of a spiritual being, 00:16:17.77\00:16:19.71 as well as excellence in the world that we live in. 00:16:19.74\00:16:24.35 Thirteen years later, the baby school is thriving. 00:16:24.38\00:16:27.95 Enrollment has grown to more than 500. 00:16:27.98\00:16:30.29 And the campus now offers education 00:16:30.32\00:16:32.09 from preschool through secondary school. 00:16:32.12\00:16:35.19 Over the last decade, 00:16:35.22\00:16:36.56 the Kabwe Adventist School has set itself apart 00:16:36.59\00:16:39.13 in the sea of education choices in town. 00:16:39.16\00:16:41.36 Local Adventist families aren't the only one 00:16:46.74\00:16:49.10 sending their children to study there. 00:16:49.14\00:16:51.21 Currently 65% of the student population 00:16:51.24\00:16:54.01 is non-Adventist. 00:16:54.04\00:16:55.71 The local community at large 00:16:55.74\00:16:57.11 has discovered high quality education 00:16:57.15\00:16:59.21 offered on the campus. 00:16:59.25\00:17:01.68 The differences are quite subtle, right? 00:17:01.72\00:17:04.22 So we have the holistic approach of the physical, 00:17:04.25\00:17:07.22 the mental and the spiritual faculties. 00:17:07.26\00:17:09.12 So when we are training their hands, 00:17:09.16\00:17:10.49 we're giving them a skill set 00:17:10.53\00:17:11.86 that other schools do not offer. 00:17:11.89\00:17:14.13 Mostly, people send their kids to school 00:17:14.16\00:17:16.20 just to get the intellectual aspect. 00:17:16.23\00:17:19.07 Have your kids, 00:17:19.10\00:17:20.54 you know, 00:17:20.57\00:17:21.90 astute and get them very schooled and learned. 00:17:21.94\00:17:26.07 There's also a spiritual aspect to it. 00:17:26.11\00:17:27.91 There are certain challenges that people face in life 00:17:27.94\00:17:30.18 that your intellect might not get you through. 00:17:30.21\00:17:32.48 So you need that spiritual aspect. 00:17:32.51\00:17:34.58 You also need the skill set 00:17:34.62\00:17:35.95 to help you navigate through life's problems 00:17:35.98\00:17:37.82 and challenges quite easily. 00:17:37.85\00:17:39.19 One of the items 00:17:39.22\00:17:40.56 that contributes to the holistic education 00:17:40.59\00:17:42.52 offered at the Kabwe Adventist School 00:17:42.56\00:17:44.59 is an intentional focus on spiritual development. 00:17:44.63\00:17:47.73 The school staff includes a team of chaplains 00:17:47.76\00:17:49.73 led by Mawuse Michello. 00:17:49.76\00:17:51.90 They care for the spiritual needs 00:17:51.93\00:17:53.34 of each and every person connected with the school. 00:17:53.37\00:17:56.50 So my function is to offer 00:17:56.54\00:17:58.81 the spiritual aspect of the school. 00:17:58.84\00:18:00.18 So remember we have the mental aspect, 00:18:00.21\00:18:02.71 we have the physical aspect. 00:18:02.74\00:18:04.68 So I help out with both the spiritual 00:18:04.71\00:18:06.75 and the social integration of the child. 00:18:06.78\00:18:09.82 And not just the pupils themselves, 00:18:09.85\00:18:11.22 but also the staff members. 00:18:11.25\00:18:12.89 So we do works like counseling 00:18:12.92\00:18:15.96 for both staff members and pupils. 00:18:15.99\00:18:18.93 And even parents when they do see fit. 00:18:18.96\00:18:22.23 We do talk to parents 00:18:22.26\00:18:23.60 when they come to get reports for their children, 00:18:23.63\00:18:26.03 and they do visit our office as well 00:18:26.07\00:18:28.04 just to help them understand that 00:18:28.07\00:18:29.50 we need a balance between the homeschooling 00:18:29.54\00:18:32.27 and the actual space that we have here 00:18:32.31\00:18:35.18 between the teacher and the child. 00:18:35.21\00:18:37.11 The chaplain's work is basically 00:18:37.15\00:18:38.61 quite massive at this place. 00:18:38.65\00:18:42.45 Mawuse has learned that 00:18:42.48\00:18:43.82 ensuring a child emotional and spiritual needs are met 00:18:43.85\00:18:47.12 makes for more engaged students, 00:18:47.16\00:18:49.39 encouraging and interacting with students 00:18:49.42\00:18:51.76 as well as visiting families in their homes 00:18:51.79\00:18:53.70 is a regular part of his work. 00:18:53.73\00:18:55.66 In this time and age in which we're living in, 00:18:55.70\00:18:57.63 a lot of homes are broken. 00:18:57.67\00:19:00.00 Those that are being made 00:19:00.04\00:19:01.37 are not made on the spiritual stance 00:19:01.40\00:19:03.37 that they should, 00:19:03.41\00:19:04.74 so it affects the well-being of the child psychologically, 00:19:04.77\00:19:08.61 it affects them socially. 00:19:08.64\00:19:09.98 They become very disruptive. 00:19:10.01\00:19:12.45 But if we can bring in that component 00:19:12.48\00:19:13.88 where we have a school where we build 00:19:13.92\00:19:15.98 good citizens and candidates for heaven as well, 00:19:16.02\00:19:18.72 it actually does a lot for this community 00:19:18.75\00:19:22.02 and the world to come as well. 00:19:22.06\00:19:23.39 So we need more than just this school, 00:19:23.43\00:19:26.83 but most schools to actually open up 00:19:26.86\00:19:28.43 and help with the social well-being 00:19:28.46\00:19:31.03 of the community at large. 00:19:31.07\00:19:33.00 The quality of education offered on the Kabwe campus 00:19:33.03\00:19:35.80 and the nurturing staff 00:19:35.84\00:19:37.17 has families flocking to the school. 00:19:37.21\00:19:39.67 When I first came here, 00:19:39.71\00:19:41.18 I did a sample 00:19:41.21\00:19:43.01 because I really wanted quality education in the kids. 00:19:43.04\00:19:48.82 So when I went around, 00:19:48.85\00:19:51.19 I was told there is Kabwe Adventist School 00:19:51.22\00:19:53.36 being a Christian school. 00:19:53.39\00:19:55.26 So I went there to look for space for the kids. 00:19:55.29\00:20:01.30 It was not easy 00:20:01.33\00:20:02.66 because space there are limited. 00:20:02.70\00:20:04.63 And they accepted me to take the children there. 00:20:04.67\00:20:09.94 Chileshe has three daughters 00:20:09.97\00:20:11.71 all attending the Kabwe Adventist School. 00:20:11.74\00:20:14.54 He lives 30 minutes outside the town, 00:20:14.58\00:20:16.68 which makes the commute to school a bit challenging. 00:20:16.71\00:20:19.11 But to him, the drive is worth it. 00:20:19.15\00:20:21.78 Education is very important. 00:20:21.82\00:20:23.62 Me, I never had that chance. 00:20:23.65\00:20:28.52 My parents, they didn't work well to, 00:20:28.56\00:20:31.03 on my foundation. 00:20:31.06\00:20:33.16 So I did want to create 00:20:33.19\00:20:36.97 a very good foundation for them. 00:20:37.00\00:20:39.50 And it's an investment. 00:20:39.53\00:20:41.40 I'm trying to budget for it. 00:20:41.44\00:20:43.67 I really want to invest in them so that even when I die, 00:20:43.71\00:20:47.34 once they finish school, they're going to survive. 00:20:47.38\00:20:50.31 So education is the best gift that I can give a child. 00:20:50.35\00:20:54.62 So I've not even looked at the distance. 00:20:54.65\00:20:57.12 It's far from here to town. 00:20:57.15\00:20:59.62 But I'm one of those 00:20:59.65\00:21:00.99 who are trying at least to give quality education. 00:21:01.02\00:21:04.79 Chileshe's assessment of the school 00:21:04.83\00:21:06.43 is shared by other parents 00:21:06.46\00:21:07.86 who want the best education for their children. 00:21:07.90\00:21:10.67 I looked around the schools around Kabwe, 00:21:10.70\00:21:15.10 but when I found that the quality for the education 00:21:15.14\00:21:19.34 you're providing there is much more qualitative 00:21:19.37\00:21:22.31 than any other schools. 00:21:22.34\00:21:26.25 That's what brought me there. 00:21:26.28\00:21:28.68 The school has impacted me in a very big way 00:21:28.72\00:21:33.05 because you are providing 00:21:33.09\00:21:37.49 that kind of holistic type of education. 00:21:37.53\00:21:43.37 You get a child 00:21:43.40\00:21:44.73 but you treat that child like your own. 00:21:44.77\00:21:48.64 Then by the time they're coming out of your school, 00:21:48.67\00:21:53.17 they are real citizens of our Zambia. 00:21:53.21\00:21:58.21 Gordon's daughter Precious is in secondary school 00:21:58.25\00:22:01.05 and is the top student in her class. 00:22:01.08\00:22:03.12 He is grateful 00:22:03.15\00:22:04.49 for the excellent academic program at Kabwe. 00:22:04.52\00:22:06.59 And the icing on the cake 00:22:06.62\00:22:07.96 is the relationship they built 00:22:07.99\00:22:09.32 with the school's faculty and staff. 00:22:09.36\00:22:11.93 We are even good friends with the teachers. 00:22:11.96\00:22:14.73 I know their contact numbers, they've been into my home, 00:22:14.76\00:22:18.40 I've been to their school. 00:22:18.43\00:22:19.83 And each time there is anything concerning our child, 00:22:19.87\00:22:24.57 they contact me. 00:22:24.61\00:22:26.98 Chileshe, Gordon 00:22:27.01\00:22:28.34 and their families are not Adventist, 00:22:28.38\00:22:30.18 but they feel fortunate 00:22:30.21\00:22:31.55 to be part of the Kabwe Adventist School family. 00:22:31.58\00:22:34.25 Demand at the school is high, but space is very limited. 00:22:34.28\00:22:38.35 Parents, they really want to take their children 00:22:38.39\00:22:40.29 at Kabwe Adventist School. 00:22:40.32\00:22:42.56 But there is no space and the staff, 00:22:42.59\00:22:47.53 they have restricted themselves in growing their number. 00:22:47.56\00:22:51.93 They have put the control measure there. 00:22:51.97\00:22:54.54 They don't just accept anyone because of their space. 00:22:54.57\00:22:58.54 So they cannot accommodate the classrooms, 00:22:58.57\00:23:02.11 the space is not enough for expansion. 00:23:02.14\00:23:05.45 Because now we also have a challenge of enrollment. 00:23:05.48\00:23:08.35 Because many people are coming. Okay. 00:23:08.38\00:23:09.82 They have realized 00:23:09.85\00:23:11.19 that Adventist education is sweet. 00:23:11.22\00:23:16.19 They want to test that sweetness. 00:23:16.22\00:23:19.63 And every time we just say, "No. There's no space." 00:23:19.66\00:23:23.33 The ideal design is for about 450. 00:23:23.37\00:23:28.57 But we do extend 00:23:28.60\00:23:30.01 because of the large amount of people 00:23:30.04\00:23:32.44 who want to bring their kids here. 00:23:32.47\00:23:33.98 So you have quite a long list of people 00:23:34.01\00:23:36.41 who are on the waiting list, 00:23:36.44\00:23:37.91 in case someone goes off on transfer, 00:23:37.95\00:23:39.45 they will easily bring their child here. 00:23:39.48\00:23:41.82 But we don't have space for everyone as yet. 00:23:41.85\00:23:44.62 There are more than 500 students 00:23:44.65\00:23:46.55 meeting in a space designed for less 00:23:46.59\00:23:48.62 and a long waiting list for admission. 00:23:48.66\00:23:51.16 The school needed to grow, 00:23:51.19\00:23:52.96 but they had no resources to do so. 00:23:52.99\00:23:55.03 Plus, the current campus is landlocked 00:23:55.06\00:23:57.07 with no physical space to expand. 00:23:57.10\00:23:59.63 From 2009-2014, 00:23:59.67\00:24:02.44 Maranatha constructed seven schools in Zambia. 00:24:02.47\00:24:05.61 When the growing need for churches and schools 00:24:05.64\00:24:07.51 brought us back to the country in 2018, 00:24:07.54\00:24:09.94 the expansion of the Kabwe School 00:24:09.98\00:24:11.75 was high on the list of needs. 00:24:11.78\00:24:13.95 Local church leaders identified a large plot of land 00:24:13.98\00:24:16.85 and Maranatha quickly began construction 00:24:16.89\00:24:18.82 on a 12-classroom campus. 00:24:18.85\00:24:21.09 The new site will be for elementary students 00:24:21.12\00:24:23.19 moving them out of cramped facilities 00:24:23.22\00:24:25.23 and into spacious classrooms. 00:24:25.26\00:24:27.03 This also enables the secondary school 00:24:27.06\00:24:29.00 to expand into the existing elementary classrooms. 00:24:29.03\00:24:32.53 When you go into the new campus, 00:24:32.57\00:24:34.07 you see the new buildings that are coming up. 00:24:34.10\00:24:36.47 It actually gives you hope 00:24:36.50\00:24:37.84 that we have more spaces and more doors 00:24:37.87\00:24:40.84 that are open to allow pupils to come through. 00:24:40.88\00:24:43.51 And the beauty of it is, 00:24:43.55\00:24:47.08 for every child that will go through, 00:24:47.12\00:24:48.45 they'll have an opportunity to actually meet Christ 00:24:48.48\00:24:50.69 in the classroom. 00:24:50.72\00:24:52.05 So the more blocks you have, 00:24:52.09\00:24:53.96 the more opportunities for Christ you have 00:24:53.99\00:24:55.79 to expose Him to the community at large. 00:24:55.82\00:24:57.96 Most of them will never have an opportunity 00:24:57.99\00:24:59.39 to get to a church building 00:24:59.43\00:25:00.76 to actually listen to the gospel. 00:25:00.80\00:25:02.36 But when they come to Christian school, 00:25:02.40\00:25:03.73 that's the one opportunity they have. 00:25:03.77\00:25:05.57 So you actually have more of an opportunity 00:25:05.60\00:25:07.24 to minister to them, 00:25:07.27\00:25:08.60 and to share Christ with them. 00:25:08.64\00:25:09.97 So it's beautiful when we see the campus growing that much. 00:25:10.01\00:25:12.81 We have more spaces open 00:25:12.84\00:25:15.01 to actually preach the gospel to them. 00:25:15.04\00:25:18.21 This school, 00:25:18.25\00:25:21.22 it is God Himself that is building it. 00:25:21.25\00:25:24.25 But He cannot come from heaven to come and mold bricks. 00:25:24.29\00:25:26.76 But through His agencies He's able to do that. 00:25:26.79\00:25:29.26 So the coming of Maranatha International, 00:25:29.29\00:25:31.69 it's not human dream. 00:25:31.73\00:25:35.40 No. 00:25:35.43\00:25:36.77 no, no, no, no, no. 00:25:36.80\00:25:38.13 God Himself puts things in place. 00:25:38.17\00:25:40.80 He has got a plan for everything. 00:25:40.84\00:25:42.77 And at every moment, He puts things in place, 00:25:42.80\00:25:46.01 and they just fit in. 00:25:46.04\00:25:48.64 Maranatha's work to provide churches, 00:25:48.68\00:25:50.68 schools and water wells is answering prayers 00:25:50.71\00:25:53.68 all over Zambia. 00:25:53.72\00:25:55.22 But we need your help. 00:25:55.25\00:25:57.75 Help us provide water to communities 00:25:57.79\00:25:59.92 that are thirsty. 00:25:59.95\00:26:01.29 Help us expand opportunities 00:26:04.26\00:26:06.33 for children to learn about their world. 00:26:06.36\00:26:08.23 And the princess gave him a name. 00:26:11.73\00:26:15.97 Do you know the name? 00:26:16.00\00:26:17.71 Who can guess? 00:26:17.74\00:26:19.07 Me. You? 00:26:19.11\00:26:20.44 Moses. Moses. 00:26:20.48\00:26:21.81 Help us spread hope 00:26:21.84\00:26:23.18 through the construction of churches. 00:26:23.21\00:26:24.95 Projects in Zambia are in need of funding. 00:26:24.98\00:26:27.55 And you can help by making a donation. 00:26:27.58\00:26:30.85 Many of the people who walk through those doors 00:26:30.89\00:26:32.82 who never knew Christ at the very start. 00:26:32.85\00:26:35.19 Once they get to know Him 00:26:35.22\00:26:36.56 and they make their choice for Him. 00:26:36.59\00:26:38.19 It would be nice for you to actually get those messages. 00:26:38.23\00:26:41.76 When you get to heaven, someone comes and say, 00:26:41.80\00:26:43.13 "Thank you for giving." 00:26:43.16\00:26:44.60 So it's an opportunity for us to actually serve humanity. 00:26:44.63\00:26:47.74 You might never be the best of preachers, 00:26:47.77\00:26:49.64 you might never make it to history books 00:26:49.67\00:26:52.04 to be known to be people 00:26:52.07\00:26:54.04 who've helped humanity so much so. 00:26:54.08\00:26:56.14 But when we give the little donations 00:26:56.18\00:26:57.51 that we can, 00:26:57.55\00:26:58.88 we come and help build the school, 00:26:58.91\00:27:00.25 we send our kids to this place, 00:27:00.28\00:27:01.92 those are the few contributions 00:27:01.95\00:27:03.28 that will actually make 00:27:03.32\00:27:04.65 so much of a difference to people around. 00:27:04.69\00:27:06.35 So making a difference 00:27:06.39\00:27:07.72 in just one's child's life is very important. 00:27:07.76\00:27:09.26 And I would ask you to, to try and do it. 00:27:09.29\00:27:12.29 Yeah, it's an opportunity in life to serve God 00:27:12.33\00:27:15.10 in just this small space. 00:27:15.13\00:27:17.73 You may not realize even as Maranatha, 00:27:17.77\00:27:19.53 the work that you are doing now, 00:27:19.57\00:27:20.90 how far it will go, 00:27:20.94\00:27:22.27 and how far it goes in the minds of the people. 00:27:22.30\00:27:24.37 So it is quite important 00:27:24.41\00:27:25.74 that Maranatha continues building these structures here 00:27:25.77\00:27:28.64 because at the end of the day, 00:27:28.68\00:27:30.01 people praise God 00:27:30.05\00:27:31.38 for this work that you are doing. 00:27:31.41\00:27:32.85
