Union College's school song 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 maybe about slinging the ink and push in the pen. 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.90 But this week is all about swinging the hammer. 00:00:04.93\00:00:07.44 About 90 Maranatha Volunteers 00:00:07.47\00:00:09.20 are on campus in Lincoln, Nebraska 00:00:09.24\00:00:11.11 to renovate the women's dormitory. 00:00:11.14\00:00:13.21 The work includes demolition, painting, and carpentry. 00:00:13.24\00:00:16.85 The project will also require much electrical work. 00:00:16.88\00:00:19.58 And fortunately, this team has plenty of skilled workers. 00:00:19.61\00:00:23.18 Among the volunteers is Larry Road Sr. 00:00:23.22\00:00:25.82 He was the electrician 00:00:25.85\00:00:27.19 who wired this same dorm 00:00:27.22\00:00:28.56 when it was first built. 00:00:28.59\00:00:29.92 Now he is almost 90 years old and back to help. 00:00:29.96\00:00:33.19 Another Maranatha volunteer 00:00:33.23\00:00:34.83 Mick Ray owns Empire Electric in Lincoln. 00:00:34.86\00:00:38.17 He has encouraged his staff of trained electricians 00:00:38.20\00:00:40.67 to join the project for as many days as possible. 00:00:40.70\00:00:43.87 It's the generosity of volunteers 00:00:43.91\00:00:45.71 like Larry and Mick 00:00:45.74\00:00:47.08 who make each Maranatha mission trip 00:00:47.11\00:00:48.78 a success and a blessing to everyone involved. 00:00:48.81\00:00:52.01 Hear more about our projects in North America 00:00:52.05\00:00:53.98 at our Annual Mission Maranatha Event 00:00:54.02\00:00:55.85 in Sacramento, California, September 19 to 21. 00:00:55.88\00:00:58.65 Check out our website. 00:00:58.69\00:01:00.02 At first glance, the small campus 00:01:31.82\00:01:34.02 looks like a typical boarding school in Kenya. 00:01:34.06\00:01:37.23 There are kids in uniform attending assembly, 00:01:37.26\00:01:40.60 class and eating in the dining commons. 00:01:40.63\00:01:44.70 There are kids living in dormitories, 00:01:44.73\00:01:46.90 doing their laundry and chores 00:01:46.94\00:01:48.94 and playing outdoors. 00:01:48.97\00:01:51.91 But the Kajiado Adventist School 00:01:51.94\00:01:53.78 and Rescue Center is no ordinary campus. 00:01:53.81\00:01:57.35 Kajiado is home to 150 girls 00:01:57.38\00:01:59.91 who have endured or escaped 00:01:59.95\00:02:01.72 female genital mutilation or FGM. 00:02:01.75\00:02:05.62 This is an illegal ritual done to girls 00:02:05.65\00:02:08.02 as young as six years old 00:02:08.06\00:02:09.69 in preparation for their arranged marriage 00:02:09.72\00:02:12.06 at the age of nine. 00:02:12.09\00:02:15.36 Kajiado was established nearly 20 years ago 00:02:15.40\00:02:17.93 as a ministry 00:02:17.97\00:02:19.30 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:02:19.33\00:02:20.67 It is a haven for Maasai girls 00:02:23.67\00:02:25.47 who have run away from their families 00:02:25.51\00:02:27.18 in search of safety and education. 00:02:27.21\00:02:30.65 Sarah Daniel is the school director. 00:02:30.68\00:02:33.48 She has been working at Kajiado for the past 10 years 00:02:33.52\00:02:36.25 and she has personally helped to rescue many girls 00:02:36.28\00:02:38.92 from abusive situations 00:02:38.95\00:02:40.42 and watch them grow into strong, 00:02:40.46\00:02:42.52 healthy, educated women of faith. 00:02:42.56\00:02:47.16 More than 2000 gals have been assisted through this center. 00:02:47.20\00:02:52.40 And we thank God for their beautiful future. 00:02:52.43\00:02:55.00 We have 20 who are in colleges and universities 00:02:55.04\00:02:59.44 and one them graduated last year. 00:02:59.47\00:03:01.78 And we are happy for that. 00:03:01.81\00:03:03.51 When I walk around 00:03:03.55\00:03:04.88 and I look at within their community, 00:03:04.91\00:03:07.28 I have teachers, I have people who are working in the offices. 00:03:07.32\00:03:11.52 And they are testimony of these 00:03:11.55\00:03:13.86 because they went through these 00:03:13.89\00:03:15.79 and now they are living a better life 00:03:15.82\00:03:20.33 after being assisted. 00:03:20.36\00:03:22.00 So we are really happy for that. 00:03:22.03\00:03:24.33 And we are not ready to stop this. 00:03:24.37\00:03:26.67 Until we see that every gal will be safe 00:03:26.70\00:03:30.64 and every gal will be given an opportunity. 00:03:30.67\00:03:35.74 It is a worthy goal. 00:03:35.78\00:03:37.11 Yet at Kajiado, the momentum is being thwarted 00:03:37.15\00:03:39.75 by a simple problem, space. 00:03:39.78\00:03:43.22 Because of the growing number 00:03:43.25\00:03:45.55 the dormitory that we have 00:03:45.59\00:03:48.12 is only supposed to handle a capacity 00:03:48.16\00:03:50.63 of not more than 80 gals. 00:03:50.66\00:03:55.06 But currently, as we speak, 00:03:55.10\00:03:57.40 the population in our dormitory is 150 gals. 00:03:57.43\00:04:03.10 Girls have to sleep two or three to a mattress. 00:04:03.14\00:04:06.61 Sometimes they push two bunks together 00:04:06.64\00:04:08.61 to create a larger space, 00:04:08.64\00:04:10.45 but not necessarily more comfort. 00:04:10.48\00:04:13.45 The cramped quarters means 00:04:13.48\00:04:14.82 that Sarah is unable to accept more girls in need of help. 00:04:14.85\00:04:19.05 Beyond the sleeping situation, 00:04:19.09\00:04:20.79 the school is in need of upgrades. 00:04:20.82\00:04:23.29 These are the only toilets available 00:04:23.32\00:04:25.39 for the 150 girls at Kajiado. 00:04:25.43\00:04:28.80 As for showers, 00:04:28.83\00:04:30.17 most of the students bathe outside 00:04:30.20\00:04:31.67 using buckets of water and darkness for privacy. 00:04:31.70\00:04:36.47 In addition to the girls, 00:04:36.50\00:04:37.84 there are about two dozen boys 00:04:37.87\00:04:39.41 who board at the school. 00:04:39.44\00:04:41.11 The coed atmosphere helps the girls 00:04:41.14\00:04:43.04 to develop a healthy relationship 00:04:43.08\00:04:44.68 with males. 00:04:44.71\00:04:46.45 The boys stay in the old school library, 00:04:46.48\00:04:48.78 which means that books had to be shoved 00:04:48.82\00:04:50.89 into a small nook. 00:04:50.92\00:04:53.05 The dedicated staff also need better housing. 00:04:53.09\00:04:56.32 It's so small in term of space. 00:04:56.36\00:05:00.20 And it cannot accommodate more than one person 00:05:00.23\00:05:02.66 and even a high we sleeping there, 00:05:02.70\00:05:04.90 it is not spacious for me. 00:05:04.93\00:05:07.10 So we need a spacious room 00:05:07.14\00:05:10.01 for us to live in comfortably. 00:05:10.04\00:05:12.57 And finally, the school needs a new well. 00:05:15.44\00:05:18.38 The current well is not producing enough 00:05:18.41\00:05:20.52 and the school is having to spend precious resources 00:05:20.55\00:05:23.05 on buying water. 00:05:23.08\00:05:26.45 Since learning of Kajiado's needs 00:05:26.49\00:05:28.62 Maranatha has agreed to help 00:05:28.66\00:05:29.99 with a number of projects on campus, 00:05:30.03\00:05:32.26 including the construction of new dormitories, 00:05:32.29\00:05:35.46 bathrooms, and showers, administrative offices, 00:05:35.50\00:05:39.27 and the drilling of a new well. 00:05:39.30\00:05:43.27 The work is being completed in part by volunteers. 00:05:43.30\00:05:46.54 Two previous groups completed one dormitory 00:05:46.57\00:05:49.11 and bathroom block. 00:05:49.14\00:05:50.61 And in March, Maranatha organized 00:05:50.65\00:05:52.71 a mission trip to Kajiado 00:05:52.75\00:05:54.55 for a team to build a second girls' dormitory. 00:05:54.58\00:05:58.09 The opportunity drew a small 00:05:58.12\00:05:59.55 but motivated group of 26 volunteers, 00:05:59.59\00:06:02.62 each with a different reason for joining the project. 00:06:02.66\00:06:06.19 Kristi Richardson was in the category 00:06:06.23\00:06:08.13 of first time volunteers. 00:06:08.16\00:06:10.37 It was a strange label to have considering her background. 00:06:10.40\00:06:14.04 Her parents Carl and Sue Kruger 00:06:14.07\00:06:16.34 had been part of the organization 00:06:16.37\00:06:17.81 for more than 40 years as board members, 00:06:17.84\00:06:20.24 donors, and volunteers. 00:06:20.28\00:06:22.78 I was an educator, I was a teacher. 00:06:22.81\00:06:25.05 And because I was on academic calendar 00:06:25.08\00:06:27.68 and I was given these are the times 00:06:27.72\00:06:29.05 when you've had vacation, 00:06:29.08\00:06:30.42 it never quite lined up. 00:06:30.45\00:06:31.79 I mean, I would have loved to it. 00:06:31.82\00:06:33.15 It would take Kristi's retirement 00:06:33.19\00:06:34.52 from teaching 00:06:34.56\00:06:35.89 to open the door to volunteering with Maranatha. 00:06:35.92\00:06:38.59 The Kruger family organized a mission trip 00:06:38.63\00:06:40.70 to work at the Gucha School in Kenya. 00:06:40.73\00:06:44.37 Sadly, neither Kristi or Sue ever made it to Kenya. 00:06:44.40\00:06:48.60 Kristi's husband had a major health issue, 00:06:48.64\00:06:50.41 forcing her to cancel her trip. 00:06:50.44\00:06:52.47 And her mother Sue had cancer 00:06:52.51\00:06:54.44 which kept her from the project. 00:06:54.48\00:06:56.41 Sue passed away shortly after. 00:06:56.44\00:06:59.11 Less than a year later, 00:06:59.15\00:07:00.48 Kristi heard about the Kajiado mission trip. 00:07:00.52\00:07:02.95 I still had tickets from the project 00:07:02.98\00:07:05.62 I was unable to go on. 00:07:05.65\00:07:07.16 And when my mother passed away, 00:07:07.19\00:07:10.09 as a memorial, we specified this project. 00:07:10.13\00:07:13.03 So I thought that would be really good 00:07:13.06\00:07:14.43 to come to honor her memory. 00:07:14.46\00:07:18.93 While Kristi's reasons 00:07:18.97\00:07:20.30 for going were specifically rooted in personal history, 00:07:20.34\00:07:23.27 Eddie and Dwanna Falconer were drawn 00:07:23.30\00:07:25.24 by a more vague calling to the mission field. 00:07:25.27\00:07:28.41 Well, my wife and I, we have one thing in common 00:07:28.44\00:07:31.28 and it is travel. 00:07:31.31\00:07:33.08 Several things in common, 00:07:33.11\00:07:34.45 but travel is one of those things 00:07:34.48\00:07:35.82 that we have in common. 00:07:35.85\00:07:37.39 And so we took a trip last year, 00:07:37.42\00:07:40.69 as part of our vacation and we traveled to Europe. 00:07:40.72\00:07:44.36 But it was mostly leisure. 00:07:44.39\00:07:46.19 We felt somewhat guilty 00:07:46.23\00:07:47.73 when we got back even though it was, 00:07:47.76\00:07:50.20 we enjoyed it, but something was missing. 00:07:50.23\00:07:52.57 The last time we went away, 00:07:52.60\00:07:53.94 we just felt like it was great. 00:07:53.97\00:07:56.30 But something was missing. 00:07:56.34\00:07:57.71 And we felt that was because it was just all about us. 00:07:57.74\00:08:00.94 We needed to do something 00:08:00.98\00:08:02.31 where we combined service and travel. 00:08:02.34\00:08:05.21 And we thought of Maranatha. 00:08:05.25\00:08:07.25 This is my first mission trip and my first time 00:08:07.28\00:08:11.85 laboring with brick and mortar. 00:08:11.89\00:08:15.42 I chose the Kenya mission trip 00:08:15.46\00:08:18.16 because the Rescue Center 00:08:18.19\00:08:19.96 and the Kajiado School just really struck me 00:08:20.00\00:08:22.60 in a really deep and personal place 00:08:22.63\00:08:24.63 and I just want to serve 00:08:24.67\00:08:26.17 and do whatever was needed 00:08:26.20\00:08:28.57 for the young ladies that go to the school. 00:08:28.60\00:08:32.37 But while Dwanna was certain of her choice, 00:08:32.41\00:08:34.68 Eddie was apprehensive. 00:08:34.71\00:08:36.91 As a self-employed businessman, 00:08:36.95\00:08:38.81 Eddie was worried. 00:08:38.85\00:08:41.82 There's always that fear 00:08:41.85\00:08:43.18 of finance come into the question 00:08:43.22\00:08:45.02 where you figure, okay, three weeks off the job. 00:08:45.05\00:08:47.86 I'm self-employed, 00:08:47.89\00:08:49.22 how much money am I gonna lose? 00:08:49.26\00:08:51.09 And then you realize, well, 00:08:51.13\00:08:54.23 God can take care of us. 00:08:54.26\00:08:56.33 And that's where we made a decision 00:08:56.36\00:08:58.37 and she began to make the plans and everything 00:08:58.40\00:09:00.30 just kind of fell in place from there. 00:09:00.34\00:09:02.77 Kristi, Dwanna, and Eddie 00:09:02.80\00:09:04.47 were joined by 23 other volunteers 00:09:04.51\00:09:06.68 with a diversity of backgrounds. 00:09:06.71\00:09:09.44 Volunteers who grew up in the mission field 00:09:09.48\00:09:11.98 and consider it home. 00:09:12.01\00:09:13.78 Volunteers who have found purpose in service 00:09:13.82\00:09:16.32 and now make Maranatha a regular part of their lives. 00:09:16.35\00:09:19.65 Volunteers who came seeking a new experience, 00:09:19.69\00:09:22.29 adventure, and purpose in their lives 00:09:22.32\00:09:25.73 regardless of their background and missions, 00:09:25.76\00:09:27.96 no one could anticipate the highly emotional experience 00:09:28.00\00:09:31.40 of serving such a special group of students 00:09:31.43\00:09:33.80 at such a special place. 00:09:33.84\00:09:37.77 When we come back, 00:09:37.81\00:09:39.14 watch a very special mission trip unfold 00:09:39.17\00:09:41.44 through the eyes of the volunteers. 00:09:41.48\00:09:43.51 Anyone can build a church, 00:10:04.63\00:10:06.13 simply give just $10 each month 00:10:06.17\00:10:08.77 and your donation along with thousands of others 00:10:08.80\00:10:11.71 will fund a new place of worship every month. 00:10:11.74\00:10:16.24 The potential for change is all around you. 00:10:16.28\00:10:19.45 All you have to do is look. 00:10:19.48\00:10:21.72 On the first day 00:10:28.62\00:10:29.96 of the Maranatha Kenya Project in Kajiado, 00:10:29.99\00:10:32.19 the campus was buzzing in preparation 00:10:32.23\00:10:34.30 for the volunteers arrival 00:10:34.33\00:10:35.83 as welcomes are a big deal in Kenya. 00:10:35.86\00:10:39.07 The first morning we arrived on our buses 00:10:39.10\00:10:42.57 the students were lined up, 00:10:42.60\00:10:44.24 the gates opened 00:10:44.27\00:10:45.61 and here's hundreds of girls 00:10:45.64\00:10:47.84 and a few boys in their matching outfits 00:10:47.88\00:10:50.65 and they were marching in time up 00:10:50.68\00:10:52.58 to make two lines to welcome us in. 00:10:52.61\00:10:54.98 Their hearts just full of joy and singing 00:10:55.02\00:10:58.09 and so happy to see us. 00:10:58.12\00:11:00.82 When we first got here that first day, 00:11:29.58\00:11:32.72 and I saw all of those children lined up, 00:11:32.75\00:11:36.02 and they seem so excited, 00:11:36.06\00:11:38.19 I felt we're in for a real treat at this place. 00:11:38.23\00:11:43.97 I wanted to cry, 00:11:44.00\00:11:45.33 where there was so much mixed emotion 00:11:45.37\00:11:46.70 when I saw the kids singing, 00:11:46.74\00:11:48.14 then I saw everybody just kind of lined up, 00:11:48.17\00:11:51.71 I felt very small. 00:11:51.74\00:11:53.94 'Cause this was way bigger than I am, you know, 00:11:53.98\00:11:55.98 so I was just grateful when I got here, 00:11:56.01\00:11:58.61 you know, all the emotions were there. 00:11:58.65\00:12:00.92 And that was just the first few minutes. 00:12:08.52\00:12:10.83 Little that Eddie know, 00:12:10.86\00:12:12.19 it was only the beginning 00:12:12.23\00:12:13.56 of what would be a transformational week 00:12:13.60\00:12:15.63 in many ways. 00:12:15.66\00:12:18.07 First, there was the work. 00:12:18.10\00:12:20.40 While many of the volunteers were veterans at laying block, 00:12:20.44\00:12:23.37 for others, the construction site 00:12:23.41\00:12:25.27 was a brand new experience. 00:12:25.31\00:12:27.58 And so laying brick is actually my first time doing this. 00:12:27.61\00:12:33.48 Not going very well so far, 00:12:33.52\00:12:35.68 I'm having a hard time getting the hang of it. 00:12:35.72\00:12:37.92 But I'll get it. 00:12:37.95\00:12:39.29 The trick is to get just the right amount of mortar 00:12:50.47\00:12:54.37 without it all falling off the sides like that. 00:12:54.40\00:12:58.31 If we just lay very still, 00:13:04.38\00:13:07.92 very quietly. 00:13:07.95\00:13:09.28 For those who would prefer work other than masonry, 00:13:12.15\00:13:14.76 there were plenty of other tasks 00:13:14.79\00:13:18.09 like teaching a health class. 00:13:18.13\00:13:19.53 Everybody like you, you're such a nice one. 00:13:19.56\00:13:21.80 Now look at you. You got germs all over you. 00:13:22.96\00:13:27.67 Painting, 00:13:27.70\00:13:30.87 organizing, 00:13:30.91\00:13:34.54 cleaning, 00:13:34.58\00:13:39.68 even shopping. 00:13:39.71\00:13:41.05 Renee Harry is a first time volunteer from New York. 00:13:43.72\00:13:47.36 On the day she wasn't on the construction site, 00:13:47.39\00:13:49.46 she helped with one of the outreach activities 00:13:49.49\00:13:51.49 on campus. 00:13:51.53\00:13:53.60 Maranatha, and I think just on the strength 00:13:53.63\00:13:56.23 of people wanting to help, 00:13:56.26\00:13:58.77 everyone sort of collected items 00:13:58.80\00:14:01.67 and clothing, shoes, anything they think 00:14:01.70\00:14:05.54 that would be beneficial to the girls and the boys here, 00:14:05.57\00:14:09.18 they collected all those items before they came. 00:14:09.21\00:14:12.05 And we sort of set up a little shopping area for them, 00:14:12.08\00:14:16.22 where they, the girls could come in 00:14:16.25\00:14:18.19 and choose items that they liked. 00:14:18.22\00:14:21.02 And then, you know, they would be able 00:14:21.06\00:14:22.39 to walk away with an item. 00:14:22.42\00:14:23.83 Thank you. 00:14:23.86\00:14:25.19 Thank you for bringing for us these gifts 00:14:25.23\00:14:27.86 and come back again. 00:14:27.90\00:14:29.36 May God bless you. 00:14:29.40\00:14:31.70 The clothing outreach was just one of the ways 00:14:31.73\00:14:33.94 the volunteers got to interact with the girls 00:14:33.97\00:14:36.20 and hear their stories. 00:14:36.24\00:14:38.01 Over the week, what they found were young women 00:14:38.04\00:14:40.51 seeking mentorship and friendship. 00:14:40.54\00:14:43.81 Once the girls leave home, 00:14:43.85\00:14:45.25 and the tradition of childhood marriage, 00:14:45.28\00:14:47.18 they're rejected by their parents. 00:14:47.22\00:14:49.68 Often they can never go back to their villages. 00:14:49.72\00:14:52.49 So what the girls want, 00:14:52.52\00:14:54.12 what they crave is genuine connection. 00:14:54.16\00:14:56.89 Jane Sines is a longtime volunteer 00:15:00.20\00:15:02.43 who recently returned to Maranatha mission trips 00:15:02.46\00:15:04.90 after a bit of a break. 00:15:04.93\00:15:07.14 In the last couple projects, 00:15:07.17\00:15:08.50 she'd been little worried 00:15:08.54\00:15:09.87 about how she'd fit into the bigger picture 00:15:09.90\00:15:11.64 as an older participant. 00:15:11.67\00:15:14.08 But with each experience, 00:15:14.11\00:15:15.44 she's found a way to be long and fulfill a need 00:15:15.48\00:15:18.08 that she would have never imagined. 00:15:18.11\00:15:21.05 I first started interacting with the girls here, 00:15:21.08\00:15:24.69 they were really kind of hesitant, 00:15:24.72\00:15:26.82 but the more I put my arms around them 00:15:26.86\00:15:28.79 and just hugged them, 00:15:28.82\00:15:30.29 and just stood by them and held their hands, 00:15:30.33\00:15:33.73 they just seem to start glowing, 00:15:33.76\00:15:36.20 and just more and more. 00:15:36.23\00:15:37.57 And now when I would come more recently to the campus, 00:15:37.60\00:15:41.24 they would just come running and wanting to hug me 00:15:41.27\00:15:44.97 and, you know, I just 00:15:45.01\00:15:47.78 and they started call me, 00:15:47.81\00:15:49.14 "Grandma, grandma, grandma come here, grandma, grandma," 00:15:49.18\00:15:53.11 and it was just a thrill. 00:15:53.15\00:15:54.58 On the first Saturday night, 00:15:57.15\00:15:58.62 the school organized a social for everyone. 00:15:58.65\00:16:00.89 The event immediately broke down any walls 00:16:00.92\00:16:03.66 that existed between the girls and the volunteers. 00:16:03.69\00:16:07.10 We, you know, celebrated the end of Sabbath, 00:16:07.13\00:16:09.30 sang some songs. 00:16:09.33\00:16:10.67 And then we got into the activity songs, 00:16:10.70\00:16:13.67 action songs, 00:16:13.70\00:16:15.04 and they were singing a song in which they came 00:16:15.07\00:16:16.91 and got us again out. 00:16:16.94\00:16:18.27 And were teaching us to do their Maasai, 00:16:18.31\00:16:21.31 think, I can't do it too well yet. 00:16:21.34\00:16:25.31 And so they had a fabulous time, 00:16:25.35\00:16:26.92 we had a fabulous time. 00:16:26.95\00:16:30.15 And that's why things like Saturday night, 00:16:30.19\00:16:32.25 to model the behavior, and to show them 00:16:32.29\00:16:34.56 that we in Christian love can have a really great time, 00:16:34.59\00:16:37.53 and laugh, and sing, and jump around 00:16:37.56\00:16:41.23 was really a wonderful thing to do. 00:16:41.26\00:16:43.06 When I got here, 00:17:21.97\00:17:23.30 I was not quite sure what the real story was. 00:17:23.34\00:17:26.31 But after about the second day, 00:17:26.34\00:17:29.78 especially the night 00:17:29.81\00:17:31.15 when they had that get together, 00:17:31.18\00:17:32.71 I had a chance to really speak 00:17:32.75\00:17:35.05 with some of the girls one-on-one. 00:17:35.08\00:17:36.42 And they were sharing 00:17:36.45\00:17:37.79 a little bit of their experience. 00:17:37.82\00:17:40.12 But one of the most profound thing 00:17:40.16\00:17:41.96 that happened to me, me and my wife, 00:17:41.99\00:17:45.09 two girls were just walking past hand in hand. 00:17:45.13\00:17:48.96 And I waved to them and they smiled back at me. 00:17:49.00\00:17:51.57 When they smiled, the other one tug 00:17:51.60\00:17:52.93 then the other one shirt and say, 00:17:52.97\00:17:54.30 "Come on, let's go over there." 00:17:54.34\00:17:55.67 They came over and we want to take pictures of them. 00:17:55.70\00:17:59.21 Within about 15 minutes, 00:17:59.24\00:18:01.61 they were calling us mom and dad. 00:18:01.64\00:18:03.41 And... 00:18:05.91\00:18:11.25 that took my heart. 00:18:11.29\00:18:13.72 That really did because here is, 00:18:13.76\00:18:17.69 they've never seen me before. 00:18:17.73\00:18:20.33 And I don't know what all the experiences 00:18:20.36\00:18:24.50 in their young life 00:18:24.53\00:18:25.87 that they have been through, 00:18:25.90\00:18:27.54 but they were so already to identify with us 00:18:27.57\00:18:29.97 as part of their own family 00:18:30.01\00:18:31.37 and to accommodate us and calling us mom and dad. 00:18:31.41\00:18:35.71 It really melted my heart, 00:18:35.74\00:18:38.21 it really did. 00:18:38.25\00:18:41.45 When we come back, 00:18:41.48\00:18:42.82 volunteers witness a miracle for Kajiado and more. 00:18:42.85\00:18:46.39 From July 19 to 28, 00:18:56.67\00:18:58.67 join Maranatha in rural New York 00:18:58.70\00:19:01.00 at Union Springs Academy. 00:19:01.04\00:19:02.94 We need your help in renovating the boys' dorm. 00:19:02.97\00:19:05.57 Work will include removing old floors 00:19:05.61\00:19:07.48 and installing new flooring, replacing light fixtures, 00:19:07.51\00:19:10.35 refurbishing furniture, landscaping and more. 00:19:10.38\00:19:13.72 Everyone is welcome to join this mission experience 00:19:13.75\00:19:16.22 and in exchange for your help, 00:19:16.25\00:19:17.85 you'll receive free room and board, 00:19:17.89\00:19:19.52 just be sure to register first. 00:19:19.55\00:19:21.52 Then from October 16 to 27, 00:19:21.56\00:19:23.76 we urgently need more volunteers 00:19:23.79\00:19:25.86 for our mission trip to Bolivia, 00:19:25.89\00:19:27.63 where we'll be constructing classrooms 00:19:27.66\00:19:29.33 at the Entre Rios School. 00:19:29.36\00:19:31.07 We'll also need help with roofing 00:19:31.10\00:19:32.50 and pouring sidewalks. 00:19:32.53\00:19:34.24 Depending on the size of the volunteer team, 00:19:34.27\00:19:36.17 we may also organize outreach activities 00:19:36.20\00:19:38.11 in the surrounding community. 00:19:38.14\00:19:39.87 The Entre Rios School was once a thriving campus 00:19:39.91\00:19:42.31 with more than 400 students. 00:19:42.34\00:19:44.11 Now competition from government schools 00:19:44.15\00:19:46.15 has caused enrollment to decline. 00:19:46.18\00:19:48.02 Updated facilities will go a long way 00:19:48.05\00:19:49.92 in drawing more students 00:19:49.95\00:19:51.29 to the Seventh-day Adventist campus. 00:19:51.32\00:19:52.85 Learn more about these projects and others 00:19:52.89\00:19:54.89 by visiting our website. 00:19:54.92\00:19:56.26 Maranatha is committed to helping 00:19:59.79\00:20:01.36 the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center 00:20:01.40\00:20:04.33 by providing new dormitories, 00:20:04.37\00:20:06.00 staff housing, and more. 00:20:06.03\00:20:08.94 But a crucial element of campus success 00:20:08.97\00:20:11.27 is dependent on water, 00:20:11.31\00:20:13.44 new bathrooms, showers, 00:20:13.48\00:20:15.01 and thriving gardens require a strong water source. 00:20:15.04\00:20:19.18 Something that the campus currently does not have. 00:20:19.21\00:20:22.62 The existing well is failing. 00:20:22.65\00:20:24.95 And the school has had to purchase water 00:20:24.99\00:20:26.86 for basic needs. 00:20:26.89\00:20:28.69 Unfortunately, hydrogeology reports reveal 00:20:28.72\00:20:31.53 that the chances of finding a good water source 00:20:31.56\00:20:34.16 on campus is dismal. 00:20:34.20\00:20:36.26 The decision was made 00:20:36.30\00:20:37.77 to drill a well over by the church 00:20:37.80\00:20:40.77 where based on geographic studies, 00:20:40.80\00:20:45.91 it was determined to be the best location 00:20:45.94\00:20:47.68 even though there was an awful lot of reason 00:20:47.71\00:20:51.85 to be skeptical. 00:20:51.88\00:20:53.52 It was determined that if there was gonna be water 00:20:53.55\00:20:56.69 on this property, 00:20:56.72\00:20:58.35 that's the location where we would find it. 00:20:58.39\00:21:01.16 The day actually of the drilling, 00:21:04.39\00:21:08.00 all of the children came out as well as volunteers 00:21:08.03\00:21:11.93 and all staff came out to the drilling site. 00:21:11.97\00:21:15.20 And we had sort of a worship experience. 00:21:15.24\00:21:19.34 And a lot of prayer 00:21:19.37\00:21:20.71 before we actually kind of started everything up. 00:21:20.74\00:21:23.01 The crew anticipated they would be drilling for days 00:21:34.62\00:21:37.19 as any water would be deep in the ground 00:21:37.23\00:21:39.43 if there was water at all. 00:21:39.46\00:21:42.46 But the next day, 00:21:42.50\00:21:43.87 the entire campus was met with a miracle. 00:21:43.90\00:21:47.17 Just around 11 am, there came the operator, Gerald 00:21:47.20\00:21:52.61 came running over to where we were working, 00:21:52.64\00:21:55.94 you could tell he was beside himself. 00:21:55.98\00:21:58.78 He was, he couldn't believe it. 00:21:58.81\00:22:00.75 He was just like, "I can't believe it. 00:22:00.78\00:22:02.98 I just had to come tell you people, we got water." 00:22:03.02\00:22:07.96 When I first heard that there was water. 00:22:07.99\00:22:12.13 And we were all running to the well. 00:22:12.16\00:22:15.56 My heart was just beating. 00:22:15.60\00:22:18.27 And my whole soul was just rejoicing 00:22:18.30\00:22:21.87 that we had water at this school, 00:22:21.90\00:22:24.51 they needed it so badly. 00:22:24.54\00:22:27.14 And it was just an overwhelming experience 00:22:27.18\00:22:30.58 to know that God hears you, 00:22:30.61\00:22:33.52 hears these kids 00:22:33.55\00:22:35.32 and knows what their needs are. 00:22:35.35\00:22:39.19 And as just provided it so abundantly. 00:22:39.22\00:22:44.23 I've never seen this done. 00:22:44.26\00:22:46.90 I've read about this, 00:22:46.93\00:22:48.76 but to be an eye-witness 00:22:48.80\00:22:51.20 to see this happen before your eyes, 00:22:51.23\00:22:53.70 to be able to experience the emotions 00:22:53.74\00:22:57.84 and to experience a miracle, 00:22:57.87\00:23:00.68 it took my breath away. 00:23:00.71\00:23:02.04 It was profound, it was amazing. 00:23:02.08\00:23:05.61 The miracle of water 00:23:20.40\00:23:21.73 felt like the pinnacle of the mission trip. 00:23:21.76\00:23:24.50 Yet just a couple days later, 00:23:24.53\00:23:26.84 the volunteers had another climactic event, 00:23:26.87\00:23:29.64 the dormitory. 00:23:29.67\00:23:32.31 After six days of construction 00:23:32.34\00:23:34.08 with a relatively small team of volunteers, 00:23:34.11\00:23:36.75 the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center 00:23:36.78\00:23:39.31 celebrated the opening of a new dormitory. 00:23:39.35\00:23:42.18 Probably, the highlight is the girls coming 00:23:45.55\00:23:48.49 to get us out of chairs 00:23:48.52\00:23:50.69 and bring us up to the dorm. 00:23:50.73\00:23:53.50 And going in with us and we walk into the dorm. 00:23:53.53\00:23:58.03 I had two girls with me 00:23:58.07\00:23:59.60 and they said, "This is my bunk. 00:23:59.63\00:24:01.80 This is my bunk." 00:24:01.84\00:24:03.84 That was kind of special. 00:24:03.87\00:24:06.24 Oh, they were so excited 00:24:06.27\00:24:09.74 that they were gonna have a bed of their own. 00:24:09.78\00:24:13.05 I had to jump up and down with my gals 00:24:13.08\00:24:15.98 during the dedication 00:24:16.02\00:24:18.15 of our second dormitory. 00:24:18.19\00:24:21.82 Having in mind now that all my gals 00:24:21.86\00:24:24.79 will be occupied in the new dormitory, 00:24:24.83\00:24:27.60 they will have the new beddings, 00:24:27.63\00:24:29.80 the new mattresses, 00:24:29.83\00:24:31.37 their wears and some of them were telling me, 00:24:31.40\00:24:33.30 you know, in my life, 00:24:33.34\00:24:34.67 I've never covered myself with this. 00:24:34.70\00:24:36.87 I'm just used to a blanket. 00:24:36.91\00:24:39.64 The heart was so filled, and I just thought wow, 00:24:39.67\00:24:41.54 I wish I could be here the first night 00:24:41.58\00:24:42.98 that they are able to lay in the beds 00:24:43.01\00:24:44.78 and just be here is to my heart like a girl slumber party 00:24:44.81\00:24:47.92 in the dorms because it's so amazing, 00:24:47.95\00:24:50.45 so amazing. 00:24:50.49\00:24:52.25 When the dorm was finished, 00:24:52.29\00:24:53.62 the objective of the mission trip 00:24:53.66\00:24:54.99 was completed too, 00:24:55.02\00:24:56.62 new building, new dorm, new beds, 00:24:56.66\00:25:00.20 the physical goals had been met. 00:25:00.23\00:25:03.47 As for the spiritual goals, 00:25:03.50\00:25:05.90 the transformational experience with the volunteers. 00:25:05.93\00:25:08.77 The blessings were as ample as the water 00:25:08.80\00:25:11.21 that rushed from the new well. 00:25:11.24\00:25:12.57 For Jane, her time at Kajiado has been surprising 00:25:15.91\00:25:18.91 given her long history in the mission field. 00:25:18.95\00:25:21.38 For years, she and her husband 00:25:21.42\00:25:23.32 were long and short term missionaries 00:25:23.35\00:25:25.35 that served in 40 different countries. 00:25:25.39\00:25:28.06 After her husband died, 00:25:28.09\00:25:29.52 Jane never thought she'd returned to the field. 00:25:29.56\00:25:32.39 But now she's been on two Maranatha mission trips. 00:25:32.43\00:25:35.30 And she says they have changed her life. 00:25:35.33\00:25:38.50 I don't know if it's because I know the story 00:25:38.53\00:25:42.14 of why the school was started, 00:25:42.17\00:25:45.31 and how it's saving these young girls' lives 00:25:45.34\00:25:49.31 and just giving them life. 00:25:49.34\00:25:52.81 But this has been absolutely 00:25:52.85\00:25:54.98 the most incredible mission experience 00:25:55.02\00:25:57.92 of my entire 80 plus years. 00:25:57.95\00:26:01.79 Kristi's first mission trip 00:26:01.82\00:26:03.16 has been a wonderful way 00:26:03.19\00:26:04.53 to connect with a cause 00:26:04.56\00:26:05.89 that was close to her mother's heart 00:26:05.93\00:26:07.26 and understand why her parents 00:26:07.30\00:26:08.96 not only supported Maranatha financially, 00:26:09.00\00:26:11.80 but also served on mission trips. 00:26:11.83\00:26:15.60 What we get back from giving on the ground 00:26:15.64\00:26:18.71 is huge. 00:26:18.74\00:26:20.08 And then I think that enables us 00:26:20.11\00:26:21.51 then as people to go back into our community 00:26:21.54\00:26:23.85 and share with them the needs 00:26:23.88\00:26:25.88 and what goes on here. 00:26:25.91\00:26:27.25 This is a form of worship. 00:26:27.28\00:26:29.12 It's not enough to just, I can write a check anytime. 00:26:29.15\00:26:32.19 That would be fine. 00:26:32.22\00:26:33.56 And that would help other people. 00:26:33.59\00:26:34.92 But for me to come 00:26:34.96\00:26:36.29 and really give an experience that 00:26:36.32\00:26:37.79 is that true Christian in action. 00:26:37.83\00:26:41.16 Dwanna and Eddie came in search of vacations 00:26:41.20\00:26:43.50 with a purpose, 00:26:43.53\00:26:44.87 a way to see and serve the world. 00:26:44.90\00:26:47.70 What they found was transformative. 00:26:47.74\00:26:50.01 It was a transformation that started 00:26:50.04\00:26:51.67 on the very first day. 00:26:51.71\00:26:53.54 Eddie recalls the first night. 00:26:53.58\00:26:55.64 And my wife kind of heard me sobbing that night, 00:26:55.68\00:26:58.91 which is, you know, you just got me, 00:26:58.95\00:27:01.22 you got me right here, really did, 00:27:01.25\00:27:02.95 and to see what Maranatha is doing. 00:27:02.98\00:27:08.12 It changed my perspective as a Christian. 00:27:08.16\00:27:10.76 It really did. 00:27:10.79\00:27:12.29 But I remember something very profound. 00:27:12.33\00:27:14.73 And as I'm contemplating it, Jesus had said at one point, 00:27:14.76\00:27:19.07 "Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven." 00:27:19.10\00:27:23.00 So now, I'm understanding that to me, 00:27:23.04\00:27:26.88 what we can do now for His kingdom 00:27:26.91\00:27:29.88 is far more important 00:27:29.91\00:27:31.25 than just watching for Him to come. 00:27:31.28\00:27:32.71 Thank you Maranatha for the new dorm. 00:27:35.68\00:27:39.99 You have done a good work to us. 00:27:40.02\00:27:43.56 May God bless you. 00:27:43.59\00:27:45.69
