the interesting thing

the job was offered to him.

A couple of the board
members took me aside and said,

time I was a young man.

then I wanted to make a
difference in the world."

you could be used by God

of those board members.

volunteering with Maranatha

Something happened there.

A very interesting
thing started to happen.

We started doing some
projects with an organization

called Volunteers International.

That was started by a gentleman
who became a friend of mine,

and we did quite a
few projects together

until finally we
came to the point we said,

"Why don't we
just merge operations."

We're each paying
for different expenses

that are getting doubled
up, so let's just combine them.

In 1989, Maranatha

Even before the
organizations merged,

regularly with Maranatha.

from time to time
to evaluate projects.

to the Dominican Republic,

invitation of church letters

would come to trust Maranatha.

The visit would
be a game changer

for the 23 year
old organization.

They went through the needs,

for about two hours
they showed the slides

of congregations
meeting in shacks, under trees.

There was a great need,

and convinced me

they needed
churches really badly.

And they said, you
know, we need 25, 30 projects.

And, you know, you
hear these numbers,

that's, those are
big numbers, right?

And so we
looked at a few of them

and we went back to the airport.

We go to the airport,
and Robert turned to me,

he says, "So, Don,
what are you gonna do?"

And I says, "What do you
mean, what am I gonna do?"

churches you're gonna build?

Well, they asked
for, say 25 projects.

And I said, "Well, you know,

we'll probably do
what we usually do."

You know, we do a few
projects in one place,

and a few projects

And then we, next year, we'll

listen to what they said."

I wasn't thinking that big.

the thought came to me,

we're supposed to do.

idea to the staff.

Now six people
who caught the vision

and then he brought it
to the board who agreed.

It was time to
take a leap of faith

and Santo
Domingo 92 was launched.

We did not know what we voted.

We had no idea what it
meant to do something like that.

It was more complicated
and difficult than we realized.

We thought, "Oh, how
bad, how tough can this be?"

We've done these projects before

but when you
bring 1,200 volunteers,

thing for 10 weeks,

scattered all over a large area,

the logistics start
getting away from you

He had to stretch himself,

the organization.

There were plenty of
roadblocks along the way.

But the Goliath
of Santo Domingo 92

was put into the hands of God

and the small David of Maranatha

with its tiny staff, bullied
by 1,200 volunteers prevailed.

Fast forward, at the
end of that 10 weeks,

on the last Friday afternoon,
we finished the 25th church.

And the next day we
dedicated the whole thing

and they had a big baptism.

And the General
Conference president was there

and the Division president
was there and they baptized.

I don't know a
few thousand people

and they had 15,000,
20,000 people in a big stadium

and I'm suddenly going, wow,

what just happened
here? What happened?

Well, quite a
few things happened

for the Maranatha organization.

Everybody's
looking at us differently.

The next week,

we get a request for
50 projects in Mexico.

Well, if they can do 25,

pretty sure they
can do 50 over here.

So that's the
numbers started changing.

The expectations
started changing.

The volunteers
started to trust us,

the relationship with the church

Totally changed the way

they were viewed
by their country,

and all of a sudden they
started growing massively.

And I can't say it
was all that project,

but I believe
God used that project

at least in a
major way toward that.

That was a whole
new day for Maranatha,

to even dream that
way was not possible

prior to that moment.

And from there, it has
just been a multiplier.

Maranatha discovered can
do that and then it is...

Well, it's pretty
well been vertical growth

From a big view, those churches,

almost every one of them

of other churches,

out of that one church.

that I almost said no.

Well, they took us to it.
