Hi, I'm Hilary Macias with the Maranatha Minute. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.80 While Brazil is more commonly known 00:00:02.83\00:00:04.77 as the country of lush rain forests 00:00:04.80\00:00:06.60 and the Amazon River, 00:00:06.63\00:00:08.04 there are regions that are simply a desert. 00:00:08.07\00:00:10.84 Droughts are common and water is scarce. 00:00:10.87\00:00:13.41 This means that clean drinking water 00:00:13.44\00:00:15.11 is even more difficult to come by. 00:00:15.14\00:00:17.61 People spend much time and energy collecting water. 00:00:17.65\00:00:20.98 In some cases, the water is not clean 00:00:21.02\00:00:23.22 and can make people sick. 00:00:23.25\00:00:24.85 Last year Maranatha launched a water program in Brazil, 00:00:24.89\00:00:28.46 drilling wells in dry states like Paraiba, 00:00:28.49\00:00:31.13 thanks to the donations of generous supporters. 00:00:31.16\00:00:33.96 Crews have drilled 34 wells on properties 00:00:34.00\00:00:36.50 where Maranatha has already constructed 00:00:36.53\00:00:38.53 a church. 00:00:38.57\00:00:39.90 Brazil is one of four countries 00:00:39.93\00:00:41.64 where Maranatha is drilling wells. 00:00:41.67\00:00:43.84 Teams are also providing water in India, 00:00:43.87\00:00:46.21 Kenya and Zambia. 00:00:46.24\00:00:48.04 Watch episodes about our water program 00:00:48.08\00:00:50.21 around the world 00:00:50.25\00:00:51.58 by downloading the Maranatha app. 00:00:51.61\00:00:53.38 Now you can watch Maranatha mission stories 00:00:53.42\00:00:55.65 and more on your mobile devices. 00:00:55.68\00:00:57.25 Go to the App Store and Google Play to download. 00:00:57.29\00:00:59.82 Agony, agony, agony. 00:01:23.95\00:01:26.65 I agonized at my future. 00:01:26.68\00:01:28.78 For I knew no more than a potential mother, 00:01:28.82\00:01:31.15 merely at the age of nine. 00:01:31.19\00:01:33.42 I wondered what a future it will be for me. 00:01:33.46\00:01:37.09 As I grew up, I looked at my mom, 00:01:37.13\00:01:40.36 an example of the future that awaited me, 00:01:40.40\00:01:43.60 merely at the age of nine. 00:01:43.63\00:01:46.10 She always toiled under the hot beating sun 00:01:46.13\00:01:48.64 and in the strong biting cold, 00:01:48.67\00:01:50.31 looking for the black little gold 00:01:50.34\00:01:52.21 just to earn money for the day. 00:01:52.24\00:01:54.18 Oh, what a painful future. 00:01:54.21\00:01:57.15 I looked at myself 00:01:57.18\00:01:58.51 and wondered 00:01:58.55\00:01:59.88 what a potential mother I would make 00:01:59.91\00:02:01.25 merely at the age of nine. 00:02:01.28\00:02:03.42 No! I had to escape. 00:02:03.45\00:02:05.45 The journey took long. 00:02:10.99\00:02:15.06 I was walking on foot. 00:02:15.10\00:02:17.30 I started walking at 12 pm 00:02:20.90\00:02:27.01 after 9 at night. 00:02:27.04\00:02:30.15 The rain was flooding all over. 00:02:30.18\00:02:33.82 The rivers, I pass through, they almost... 00:02:33.85\00:02:38.55 Some water is here, another one is here. 00:02:38.59\00:02:41.69 And at that time I was too short, 00:02:41.72\00:02:44.89 not the way I am now. 00:02:44.93\00:02:47.86 I met wild animal there, 00:02:47.90\00:02:52.97 but God is able. 00:02:53.00\00:02:55.70 They have not hurt me. 00:02:55.74\00:02:58.97 I have just passed through them. 00:02:59.01\00:03:02.68 This is Aliza Tianina. 00:03:02.71\00:03:05.31 When she was six years old, Aliza ran away from home. 00:03:05.35\00:03:09.45 For her she says that it was good 00:03:09.48\00:03:11.32 that it was raining 00:03:11.35\00:03:12.69 because, you know, when it's raining, 00:03:12.72\00:03:14.09 everybody's asleep. 00:03:14.12\00:03:15.46 Nobody will think of going out, 00:03:15.49\00:03:16.83 nobody will think 00:03:16.86\00:03:18.19 of someone can run out, you see. 00:03:18.23\00:03:21.23 But when we arrived, she arrived, 00:03:21.26\00:03:23.16 we saw a miracle 00:03:23.20\00:03:24.53 because imagining of someone 00:03:24.57\00:03:28.27 running in the cold, 00:03:28.30\00:03:30.61 passing through some rivers and go to Karuah. 00:03:30.64\00:03:35.04 It's God that was I can say. 00:03:35.08\00:03:39.31 The decision to leave home risked Aliza's life 00:03:39.35\00:03:41.58 but as a Maasai girl in Kenya, 00:03:41.62\00:03:43.45 the consequences of staying home 00:03:43.49\00:03:45.32 would have been worse. 00:03:45.35\00:03:47.76 The Maasai culture 00:03:47.79\00:03:49.62 is one of the very old cultures 00:03:49.66\00:03:54.83 within the Kenyan society. 00:03:54.86\00:03:57.13 And for them, 00:03:57.17\00:03:59.27 what they value most is their cows 00:03:59.30\00:04:03.77 and the boy child. 00:04:03.81\00:04:05.44 So the girl child is more or less like a property 00:04:05.47\00:04:09.74 to be disposed off as and when, you know, they're ready for. 00:04:09.78\00:04:13.88 As Maasai, 00:04:13.92\00:04:15.25 you have to take care of the cattle. 00:04:15.28\00:04:18.05 You have to give birth like a chicken, 00:04:18.09\00:04:22.06 you cannot count. 00:04:22.09\00:04:25.23 No, you cannot stay like the way you do. 00:04:25.26\00:04:28.43 You stay like your child must be created 00:04:28.46\00:04:31.13 to give birth to another. 00:04:31.17\00:04:34.34 Just give birth until the end of your life. 00:04:34.37\00:04:39.01 And so these girls are married off 00:04:39.04\00:04:42.44 at very early age in exchange of cows. 00:04:42.48\00:04:46.01 So by the time a girl is being taken off, 00:04:46.05\00:04:49.28 the cows have already been delivered 00:04:49.32\00:04:51.99 and that is something valued 00:04:52.02\00:04:53.66 both by their fathers and even the mothers. 00:04:53.69\00:04:58.23 And before that is done, they go through the FGM. 00:04:58.26\00:05:03.63 FGM or female genital mutilation 00:05:03.67\00:05:06.63 is a painful and dangerous ritual 00:05:06.67\00:05:08.77 Maasai girls must undergo to be prepared for marriage. 00:05:08.80\00:05:12.67 It comes with the risk of infection, 00:05:12.71\00:05:14.28 urination problems, severe bleeding and even death. 00:05:14.31\00:05:18.18 FGM is illegal in Kenya, 00:05:18.21\00:05:19.95 but continues to be a common practice 00:05:19.98\00:05:21.85 among the Maasai 00:05:21.88\00:05:23.22 who usually live in remote areas. 00:05:23.25\00:05:25.95 In Maasai community when a girl is born, 00:05:25.99\00:05:29.52 she's just seen to be like a source of wealth, 00:05:29.56\00:05:32.93 a source of income for the family 00:05:32.96\00:05:35.20 because once you're born as a girl, 00:05:35.23\00:05:37.57 by the time you grow up 00:05:37.60\00:05:38.93 at the age of seven, eight, you go through FGM, 00:05:38.97\00:05:42.34 that tells you that now you have become a woman, 00:05:42.37\00:05:46.21 you need to be responsible. 00:05:46.24\00:05:48.01 At that point, 00:05:48.04\00:05:50.28 they even start communicating to you, 00:05:50.31\00:05:52.38 "You're not supposed to be the same compound 00:05:52.41\00:05:54.78 with your mother, 00:05:54.82\00:05:56.15 you are now a grown-up person, 00:05:56.18\00:05:58.25 you need to go and start your family." 00:05:58.29\00:06:00.59 So as early as nine. 00:06:00.62\00:06:03.66 It is a traumatizing experience 00:06:03.69\00:06:06.76 because some of them 00:06:06.80\00:06:08.13 go through very difficult situations. 00:06:08.16\00:06:11.23 There are those who after FGM, 00:06:11.27\00:06:14.47 they are not given even time to heal 00:06:14.50\00:06:17.77 and because these fathers are eager to get their wealth, 00:06:17.81\00:06:22.34 to get their animals, and these other men, 00:06:22.38\00:06:27.45 they just want... 00:06:27.48\00:06:28.82 They don't care, they just want to have women. 00:06:28.85\00:06:31.09 With that imagination or that culture 00:06:49.87\00:06:53.17 and that believe in their community 00:06:53.21\00:06:55.64 that once you have gone against the will of your father, 00:06:55.68\00:06:58.95 you're cursed. 00:06:58.98\00:07:00.32 So they are those 00:07:00.35\00:07:01.68 who still live with that fear that, 00:07:01.72\00:07:04.72 "Okay, I'm here, but I know, I've gotten myself curses." 00:07:04.75\00:07:11.63 After some time, 00:07:11.66\00:07:14.73 I heard that my granddad wanted to curse me 00:07:14.76\00:07:19.63 because of running away and not to get married. 00:07:19.67\00:07:25.47 But I wasn't even thinking about cursing. 00:07:25.51\00:07:30.95 I was just thinking about my education. 00:07:30.98\00:07:34.68 Also, my dad did the same. 00:07:34.72\00:07:36.69 He told her that he want to get life, 00:07:36.72\00:07:41.02 come back, 00:07:41.06\00:07:42.39 and go to your husband's home, or unless I'll curse you. 00:07:42.42\00:07:48.10 Most of the time you find that 00:07:48.13\00:07:50.47 automatically the relationship is broken 00:07:50.50\00:07:53.80 because if it is well-known 00:07:53.84\00:07:57.41 that you need to obey your father, 00:07:57.44\00:07:59.57 you need to obey your mother, 00:07:59.61\00:08:01.28 the moment you have gone against their will 00:08:01.31\00:08:03.51 that you are to get married to this man 00:08:03.55\00:08:07.28 and you want to get this number of cows 00:08:07.32\00:08:09.48 to get the family moving and you went against that, 00:08:09.52\00:08:12.69 of course, you become like an enemy 00:08:12.72\00:08:15.26 to this community and to the family. 00:08:15.29\00:08:19.56 When my dad first heard that I have ran away, 00:08:19.59\00:08:23.53 he just wanted to kill my mom. 00:08:23.57\00:08:26.60 Same to my uncle, 00:08:26.63\00:08:27.97 first it was my uncle that beat mom, 00:08:28.00\00:08:30.91 because he's telling her that she's the one 00:08:30.94\00:08:33.07 who have showed me the way to go. 00:08:33.11\00:08:36.01 My mom was not aware. 00:08:36.04\00:08:37.38 Nobody knew that I could run away 00:08:37.41\00:08:40.85 because I was obedient. 00:08:40.88\00:08:42.28 I was not showing them that I want to go. 00:08:42.32\00:08:45.95 No, I was just quiet... 00:08:45.99\00:08:50.03 My dad hit her because of me, 00:08:50.06\00:08:53.70 and my mom was not aware of that, 00:08:53.73\00:08:56.77 I can run away. 00:08:56.80\00:09:01.00 So many people wanted me to die at that age, 00:09:01.04\00:09:04.04 but I trusted in God. 00:09:04.07\00:09:06.37 And I know God is everything. 00:09:06.41\00:09:08.94 Aliza is now 15 years old 00:09:08.98\00:09:10.48 and has lived 00:09:10.51\00:09:11.85 at the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center 00:09:11.88\00:09:14.02 for the past nine years 00:09:14.05\00:09:15.38 as she receives a Christian education. 00:09:15.42\00:09:17.65 It is her home now 00:09:17.69\00:09:19.02 along with 160 other girls and 45 boys 00:09:19.05\00:09:21.99 who helped the girls 00:09:22.02\00:09:23.36 develop healthy relationships with males. 00:09:23.39\00:09:26.59 Girls must sleep two to a mattress 00:09:26.63\00:09:28.56 because there isn't enough space. 00:09:28.60\00:09:30.73 The toilets are holes in the ground 00:09:30.77\00:09:32.77 and students must bathe in outdoor stalls 00:09:32.80\00:09:35.17 with a bucket. 00:09:35.20\00:09:36.54 The conditions aren't ideal but for many of these girls, 00:09:36.57\00:09:39.47 they cannot return home. 00:09:39.51\00:09:41.44 The decision to run away from FGM 00:09:41.48\00:09:43.35 and child marriage 00:09:43.38\00:09:44.71 means they are not welcome in their village anymore. 00:09:44.75\00:09:47.22 The first time I went 00:09:47.25\00:09:49.18 I had stayed here like five years 00:09:49.22\00:09:52.05 without seeing my brothers, 00:09:52.09\00:09:53.62 without seeing anybody, no home. 00:09:53.66\00:09:57.33 And I have to go there... 00:09:57.36\00:09:58.69 And everybody was happy to see me. 00:10:06.23\00:10:11.71 Everybody was proud of me. 00:10:11.74\00:10:16.41 But it was dad that, 00:10:16.44\00:10:20.45 my dad just came out of the house. 00:10:20.48\00:10:24.79 And that's it. 00:10:24.82\00:10:26.15 And he wanted to beat me 00:10:26.19\00:10:28.42 while I'm holding my little brother. 00:10:28.46\00:10:30.33 But everybody was crying, 00:10:37.70\00:10:40.57 "Please don't beat her, let her stay with us, 00:10:40.60\00:10:43.71 we have missed her a lot." 00:10:43.74\00:10:45.17 For most of the girls 00:10:48.81\00:10:50.15 at the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center, 00:10:50.18\00:10:52.45 the connection to their childhood home 00:10:52.48\00:10:54.18 has disappeared. 00:10:54.22\00:10:57.02 They must learn to live without their family. 00:10:57.05\00:10:59.12 The Kajiado Center becomes the girl's new home 00:10:59.15\00:11:01.72 and Principal Sarah Daniel becomes a mother figure. 00:11:01.76\00:11:06.33 Sarah is just amazing. 00:11:06.36\00:11:07.70 I mean, when you meet her, you interact with her, 00:11:07.73\00:11:10.37 you know that here is a lady 00:11:10.40\00:11:11.73 who's passionate of what she's doing. 00:11:11.77\00:11:13.10 She actually cares for the girls. 00:11:13.13\00:11:15.10 She is, you know, hardworking. 00:11:15.14\00:11:17.17 She's always on the go, 00:11:17.21\00:11:18.77 you know, she cares for the girls 00:11:18.81\00:11:20.98 because you can see the girls actually love her a lot. 00:11:21.01\00:11:22.74 It is not artificial. 00:11:22.78\00:11:24.11 It's not something 00:11:24.15\00:11:25.48 because volunteers are here or I'm there 00:11:25.51\00:11:26.85 or somebody from the conferences 00:11:26.88\00:11:28.22 has come that she does this. 00:11:28.25\00:11:29.58 She actually does this day in and day out. 00:11:29.62\00:11:30.95 And she's very charismatic, you know? 00:11:30.99\00:11:32.32 She is full of energy and she wants a better life 00:11:32.35\00:11:34.99 for these girls, you know? 00:11:35.02\00:11:36.36 And when we go... 00:11:36.39\00:11:37.73 As you see her she actually goes out 00:11:37.76\00:11:39.23 and sees it there are girls that have been married off 00:11:39.26\00:11:41.33 or, you know, are going through FGM, 00:11:41.36\00:11:42.70 and she actually goes there 00:11:42.73\00:11:44.07 and rescues them and brings them back. 00:11:44.10\00:11:45.43 You can see her heart really feels for these girls. 00:11:45.47\00:11:48.04 She was like a mom to us, 00:11:48.07\00:11:49.40 you know, when we go to Kajiado, 00:11:49.44\00:11:51.37 that's home and people there are our sisters, 00:11:51.41\00:11:55.51 our brothers, and our moms, and our dads. 00:11:55.54\00:11:58.71 So Madam Sarah was just a cool mother. 00:11:58.75\00:12:01.25 Though the Kajiado students become family, 00:12:01.28\00:12:03.49 Sarah knows that deep down 00:12:03.52\00:12:05.09 children still want to be accepted 00:12:05.12\00:12:06.92 by their birth family. 00:12:06.96\00:12:08.39 From time to time, 00:12:08.42\00:12:09.76 she attempts to facilitate a reconciliation 00:12:09.79\00:12:11.93 for certain girls if the family is agreeable. 00:12:11.96\00:12:15.80 And let me tell you for these girls, 00:12:15.83\00:12:18.93 when they get that opportunity to see that their father 00:12:18.97\00:12:22.34 can even just tuck their heads 00:12:22.37\00:12:25.84 because that is their sign of greetings, 00:12:25.87\00:12:28.48 you could not imagine the happiness they do have. 00:12:28.51\00:12:31.98 Even if someone who will feel, 00:12:32.01\00:12:33.35 "I'm not still safe to be here 00:12:33.38\00:12:35.65 but at least my father has shown me 00:12:35.68\00:12:38.25 that I can still continue to be called his daughter." 00:12:38.29\00:12:44.43 When we come back, 00:12:44.46\00:12:45.79 Aliza returns to the village she once ran away from. 00:12:45.83\00:12:48.70 Anyone can build a church, 00:13:10.65\00:13:12.32 simply give just $10 each month 00:13:12.35\00:13:14.92 and your donation along with thousands of others 00:13:14.96\00:13:17.83 will fund a new place of worship 00:13:17.86\00:13:19.56 every month. 00:13:19.59\00:13:22.30 The potential for change is all around you. 00:13:22.33\00:13:25.53 All you have to do is look. 00:13:25.57\00:13:27.60 Aliza's first visit back to her village did not go well. 00:13:40.78\00:13:44.19 Since then, Aliza has tried to keep the relationship 00:13:44.22\00:13:46.72 with her father alive by visiting again. 00:13:46.76\00:13:49.09 As her father observes the knowledge 00:13:49.12\00:13:50.83 she is gaining in school, 00:13:50.86\00:13:52.19 he realizes the value of her education. 00:13:52.23\00:13:55.30 A recent visit showed that her father has experienced 00:13:55.33\00:13:57.97 a complete change of heart and he's proud of Aliza. 00:13:58.00\00:14:01.10 While filming in Aliza's old village, 00:14:40.84\00:14:42.58 the Maranatha Mission Stories crew 00:14:42.61\00:14:44.15 received word that a young girl, 00:14:44.18\00:14:45.65 a cousin of Aliza 00:14:45.68\00:14:47.02 had been brought to this village 00:14:47.05\00:14:48.38 to undergo FGM. 00:14:48.42\00:14:50.22 She was crying and distraught. 00:14:50.25\00:14:53.69 While we were there, 00:14:53.72\00:14:55.06 Sarah came to know about this child that was... 00:14:55.09\00:14:57.53 She's only nine years old, I think, 00:14:57.56\00:14:58.89 and she was sent to her grandmother's house for FGM 00:14:58.93\00:15:02.70 and Sarah was asking around that, 00:15:02.73\00:15:05.33 "Why are you not in school? 00:15:05.37\00:15:06.70 Why are you not in school?" 00:15:06.74\00:15:08.14 And I learned she cannot communicate. 00:15:08.17\00:15:09.87 So I thought she has never gone to school. 00:15:09.90\00:15:13.34 So after I followed up, I've realized, 00:15:13.38\00:15:15.44 booking has already been done. 00:15:15.48\00:15:17.18 So she was waiting for FGM so that she can get married of. 00:15:17.21\00:15:22.88 This girl is here for FGM 00:15:22.92\00:15:24.25 and she's already been given off for marriage 00:15:24.29\00:15:26.76 and then, you know, Sarah just, bang, 00:15:26.79\00:15:28.16 went in and said, 00:15:28.19\00:15:29.52 "I'm taking this girl back with me." 00:15:29.56\00:15:31.73 But when I talked, she told me, 00:15:31.76\00:15:33.46 yes, she's willing to go to school, 00:15:33.50\00:15:35.73 but nobody is ready to take her to school. 00:15:35.76\00:15:37.90 Yeah. 00:15:37.93\00:15:39.27 So I've told I would go with her. 00:15:39.30\00:15:43.20 So it's good we came on a school day, 00:15:43.24\00:15:45.54 we're able to identify. 00:15:45.57\00:15:48.28 After consulting with Aliza's father, 00:15:48.31\00:15:50.35 the village elder, 00:15:50.38\00:15:51.71 it was agreed that Sarah would take the girl 00:15:51.75\00:15:53.58 named Malaton back to the Kajaido Center. 00:15:53.62\00:15:56.58 Aliza's father also asked that they take his young son, 00:15:56.62\00:15:59.59 Aliza's brother, 00:15:59.62\00:16:00.96 as they couldn't afford to send him to school. 00:16:00.99\00:16:03.43 Though the center's capacity to take more children 00:16:03.46\00:16:05.76 is stretched to its limits, 00:16:05.79\00:16:07.13 Sarah agreed to take the boy named Edgar. 00:16:07.16\00:16:09.93 The village sent the children off 00:16:09.96\00:16:11.30 with a song 00:16:11.33\00:16:12.67 and the two begin a journey into a new life. 00:16:12.70\00:16:14.94 I was so, so, so happy. 00:16:20.51\00:16:22.74 So happy. 00:16:22.78\00:16:24.25 In fact, that time I saw them coming to get inside that car 00:16:24.28\00:16:29.78 going to education, I felt tears of, 00:16:29.82\00:16:33.19 just like water. 00:16:33.22\00:16:34.99 I was even just like that, just really crying. 00:16:35.02\00:16:41.36 The crew drove back to Kajaido with Aliza's brother Edgar 00:16:41.40\00:16:43.93 and cousin Malaton, 00:16:43.97\00:16:45.73 family, she never expected to live with again. 00:16:45.77\00:16:48.80 The children began the school's intake process 00:16:48.84\00:16:51.17 and transitioning to life at the Kajiado Center. 00:16:51.21\00:16:55.38 The first thing that we need to do 00:16:55.41\00:16:56.85 with this girl comes in 00:16:56.88\00:16:58.51 when you go to wash, 00:16:58.55\00:17:00.68 you need some clothes to change. 00:17:00.72\00:17:03.12 Maybe there is a girl who has two or three dresses 00:17:03.15\00:17:06.02 that you can borrow, 00:17:06.05\00:17:07.39 but you can't borrow the inner wears. 00:17:07.42\00:17:09.16 So all the time, I have to make sure 00:17:09.19\00:17:11.13 that I should be able to get 00:17:11.16\00:17:13.23 like the inner clothes for this girl 00:17:13.26\00:17:15.60 to be able to put on. 00:17:15.63\00:17:17.40 Then at that time, 00:17:17.43\00:17:18.77 there's also other essentials like soap, a basin... 00:17:18.80\00:17:23.04 And sometimes they come 00:17:23.07\00:17:24.41 when we are not able to do that. 00:17:24.44\00:17:25.77 But we have to 00:17:25.81\00:17:27.14 even if I have to go out and borrow 00:17:27.18\00:17:28.54 because this person is just looking at me 00:17:28.58\00:17:30.91 as the hope at that point. 00:17:30.95\00:17:33.08 We also take time, 00:17:36.52\00:17:38.22 visit the children office department 00:17:38.25\00:17:40.92 because they also need to get us some document 00:17:40.96\00:17:43.89 for us to file 00:17:43.93\00:17:45.26 and to ensure nobody can threaten us 00:17:45.29\00:17:47.76 of stealing their children 00:17:47.80\00:17:50.03 because the children office is also aware. 00:17:50.07\00:17:52.53 The other thing we now want to take them 00:17:52.57\00:17:54.04 for medical checkup, which is also a bit expensive. 00:17:54.07\00:17:59.21 When we got to the hospital, they would not say, 00:17:59.24\00:18:00.98 "Oh, this one is a rescue. It's free." 00:18:01.01\00:18:04.45 We have to pay 00:18:04.48\00:18:05.81 what the other people are paying. 00:18:05.85\00:18:08.88 Some of them 00:18:08.92\00:18:10.25 because they have never gone to school, 00:18:10.29\00:18:12.15 they are not even able to communicate 00:18:12.19\00:18:14.09 in another language 00:18:14.12\00:18:15.46 apart from their local language. 00:18:15.49\00:18:17.39 And that is why we normally need that 00:18:17.43\00:18:19.26 like we have this, 00:18:19.29\00:18:20.63 we have some women who are volunteers 00:18:20.66\00:18:22.56 who also come in 00:18:22.60\00:18:23.93 and even our other guys who have gone through this, 00:18:23.97\00:18:27.40 they're also able to help us understand. 00:18:27.44\00:18:29.80 Personally, I do speak the simple ones. 00:18:29.84\00:18:33.11 We can communicate in a simple way, 00:18:33.14\00:18:36.78 but let me say that these children are genius, 00:18:36.81\00:18:39.98 for me, that's what I can call them. 00:18:40.02\00:18:41.95 Because you'll realize 00:18:41.98\00:18:43.39 once they interact with the rest 00:18:43.42\00:18:45.02 even within a month or two, 00:18:45.05\00:18:46.59 they can speak the simple words. 00:18:46.62\00:18:49.66 They can communicate with others. 00:18:49.69\00:18:52.89 Malaton and Edgar went 00:18:52.93\00:18:54.30 through the school's intake process 00:18:54.33\00:18:55.96 seeing places and things 00:18:56.00\00:18:57.47 they had never experienced before. 00:18:57.50\00:18:59.30 That evening 00:18:59.33\00:19:00.67 they were unpacking new belongings 00:19:00.70\00:19:02.30 into a new home cramped though it is. 00:19:02.34\00:19:04.37 That morning, 00:19:04.41\00:19:05.74 the girl's life was just normal, 00:19:05.77\00:19:07.18 you know, get up, milk the cows, 00:19:07.21\00:19:09.88 clean the place, 00:19:09.91\00:19:11.25 just a day to day life that these girls having. 00:19:11.28\00:19:14.08 By afternoon, bang. 00:19:14.12\00:19:15.68 They had their life had been transformed. 00:19:15.72\00:19:17.32 It is complete U-turn 00:19:17.35\00:19:18.69 where they now have a better future, 00:19:18.72\00:19:20.06 they have shot at life. 00:19:20.09\00:19:21.42 And who knows, they could become lawyers 00:19:21.46\00:19:22.79 or doctors or engineers 00:19:22.82\00:19:24.16 and it is so heartening to see that happening 00:19:24.19\00:19:26.09 in front of your eyes, you know? 00:19:26.13\00:19:27.46 Here you are seeing them with torn clothes 00:19:27.50\00:19:29.46 and nose leaking and dirty, 00:19:29.50\00:19:30.97 and by evening 00:19:31.00\00:19:32.33 they were so smartly dressed and so... 00:19:32.37\00:19:34.14 You could not recognize them. 00:19:34.17\00:19:35.50 And you could not recognize them 00:19:35.54\00:19:36.87 that these are the same kids that we rescued. 00:19:36.91\00:19:39.07 Though they experienced dramatic changes 00:19:39.11\00:19:41.51 in just a day's time, 00:19:41.54\00:19:42.88 Malaton and Edgar smiles show they are happy. 00:19:42.91\00:19:45.98 What is love? 00:19:46.01\00:19:48.28 He loves me. 00:19:48.32\00:19:50.29 As they settled into a new home, 00:19:50.32\00:19:51.95 Sarah was again confronted with the reality 00:19:51.99\00:19:54.06 that they had no room to house them 00:19:54.09\00:19:55.96 and beyond the cramped conditions 00:19:55.99\00:19:57.69 for current students, 00:19:57.73\00:19:59.06 this lack of space prevents the school 00:19:59.09\00:20:00.60 from proactively rescuing many more children. 00:20:00.63\00:20:03.77 I have cases of 46 girls who wanted to come in, 00:20:03.80\00:20:07.17 but I don't have the space, honestly. 00:20:07.20\00:20:10.01 I just give promises 00:20:10.04\00:20:11.47 that just give me some more time. 00:20:11.51\00:20:14.64 But in case of any danger, please consult us, 00:20:14.68\00:20:17.95 let us know but we don't have this place. 00:20:17.98\00:20:21.32 When we get back, 00:20:21.35\00:20:22.68 hear the success stories of three former students 00:20:22.72\00:20:25.15 and learn what Maranatha is doing 00:20:25.19\00:20:26.86 to help the Kajiado School's lack of space. 00:20:26.89\00:20:29.52 This summer head over to Kenya for a special mission trip 00:20:41.60\00:20:44.67 at the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center. 00:20:44.71\00:20:47.51 From June 11-23, 00:20:47.54\00:20:49.18 we're looking for volunteers to help construct classrooms 00:20:49.21\00:20:51.75 on campus. 00:20:51.78\00:20:53.11 The classrooms will serve students 00:20:53.15\00:20:54.62 entering high school. 00:20:54.65\00:20:56.08 Most of the students are girls 00:20:56.12\00:20:57.65 who have escaped childhood marriage 00:20:57.69\00:20:59.49 and now live at the rescue center. 00:20:59.52\00:21:01.56 Volunteers will also coordinate local outreach 00:21:01.59\00:21:03.96 such as health education and children's programs. 00:21:03.99\00:21:07.16 Also in June, 00:21:07.20\00:21:08.53 give your children the experience of a lifetime 00:21:08.56\00:21:10.73 by joining us on our annual family project. 00:21:10.77\00:21:13.60 From June 17-28, 00:21:13.64\00:21:15.30 we're taking a team to Arequipa, Peru 00:21:15.34\00:21:17.77 where we'll be building a new church 00:21:17.81\00:21:19.34 for the Los Portales congregation. 00:21:19.37\00:21:21.51 We'll also organize plenty of community outreach, 00:21:21.54\00:21:23.75 including medical and dental clinics 00:21:23.78\00:21:25.38 and health education. 00:21:25.41\00:21:27.18 Family projects are specially designed 00:21:27.22\00:21:29.22 for people of all ages, 00:21:29.25\00:21:30.72 and even includes a day camp program 00:21:30.75\00:21:32.59 for volunteers under 12 years old. 00:21:32.62\00:21:35.19 Learn more about these mission trips 00:21:35.22\00:21:36.83 and many others on our website at maranatha.org. 00:21:36.86\00:21:40.13 Though the conditions 00:21:45.20\00:21:46.53 at the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center 00:21:46.57\00:21:48.70 are inadequate, 00:21:48.74\00:21:50.07 it is here that students receive 00:21:50.11\00:21:51.44 a solid foundation upon which to build a future. 00:21:51.47\00:21:54.84 Some girls learn a skill trade like tailoring, 00:21:54.88\00:21:58.45 others eventually pursue a college education. 00:21:58.48\00:22:02.05 Josephine Metian Raita earned a degree in education 00:22:02.08\00:22:05.35 and now teaches at a local primary school. 00:22:05.39\00:22:09.36 I spent my life there never going home. 00:22:09.39\00:22:12.43 All of primary, I finished. 00:22:12.46\00:22:14.30 Secondary I went without even single day 00:22:14.33\00:22:16.77 going back home. 00:22:16.80\00:22:18.37 We've been given somewhere to sleep, 00:22:18.40\00:22:20.77 you have been given education and... 00:22:20.80\00:22:24.57 You have been given, nurtured spiritually 00:22:24.61\00:22:27.74 because we always had good times during the Saturday, 00:22:27.78\00:22:31.21 we go to church, we worship, 00:22:31.25\00:22:32.91 and we learn a lot about good things. 00:22:32.95\00:22:37.92 I had that passion long time ago 00:22:37.95\00:22:40.06 because I always admire teachers 00:22:40.09\00:22:42.52 when teaching in class and nurturing those kids 00:22:42.56\00:22:45.86 because I always see that it's very, 00:22:45.89\00:22:49.26 I think it's the best profession 00:22:49.30\00:22:50.93 because you bring someone 00:22:50.97\00:22:53.17 from knowing nothing 00:22:53.20\00:22:55.50 to be someone very useful in the society. 00:22:55.54\00:22:58.21 So long ago when I'm in primary school, 00:22:58.24\00:23:01.84 I always admired to be a teacher 00:23:01.88\00:23:03.71 at least to make someone to be like me 00:23:03.75\00:23:06.41 and let someone know something that never knew. 00:23:06.45\00:23:09.72 Tracy Risancho is finishing her journalism degree 00:23:09.75\00:23:12.55 at a university in the capital city of Nairobi 00:23:12.59\00:23:15.06 and credits her experience at the Kajiado School 00:23:15.09\00:23:17.66 for setting her on a path to success. 00:23:17.69\00:23:20.06 I really studied hard 00:23:20.10\00:23:21.80 because in my mind I knew 00:23:21.83\00:23:23.37 that coming from such a poor weird background, 00:23:23.40\00:23:28.07 and I really have to try my best 00:23:28.10\00:23:30.04 so that I can put myself in a better level tomorrow. 00:23:30.07\00:23:33.24 So I really tried, it really raised me up so well. 00:23:33.27\00:23:36.85 As I continued, I was a head girl, 00:23:36.88\00:23:38.88 an assistant head girl, 00:23:38.91\00:23:40.25 and it really helped me, 00:23:40.28\00:23:41.62 the responsibilities helped me at least to grow, 00:23:41.65\00:23:43.55 know myself, 00:23:43.59\00:23:44.92 know how I should handle others, 00:23:44.95\00:23:46.29 know how I should talk to people, 00:23:46.32\00:23:47.82 know about how I can control my thoughts 00:23:47.86\00:23:50.13 when I am with other people, how I should talk to them. 00:23:50.16\00:23:52.73 Yeah, it's really helped. 00:23:52.76\00:23:55.00 Kajiado really helped me 00:23:55.03\00:23:56.36 because if it wasn't for Kajiado 00:23:56.40\00:23:57.73 maybe I wouldn't be here. 00:23:57.77\00:23:59.10 God is everything 00:23:59.13\00:24:00.47 because God brought me from the village to Kajiado 00:24:00.50\00:24:04.81 to high school I have not been failing... 00:24:04.84\00:24:07.48 I've not been a failure. 00:24:07.51\00:24:09.54 I think I'm chosen. 00:24:09.58\00:24:12.31 And I'm the hope for my home 00:24:12.35\00:24:14.78 and the village and Kajiado, yes. 00:24:14.82\00:24:18.55 Because I believe when maybe I get money later, 00:24:18.59\00:24:21.56 I will still go back to Kajiado and help the girls there. 00:24:21.59\00:24:26.16 I know 00:24:26.19\00:24:27.76 I'll be a successful person one day. 00:24:27.80\00:24:30.23 And really inspired like I really want to give back. 00:24:30.27\00:24:35.50 When I'm here in school, I think about that 00:24:35.54\00:24:37.67 and I struggled so much 00:24:37.71\00:24:39.51 like I really tried to study hard 00:24:39.54\00:24:42.08 so that when I get at least a good job, 00:24:42.11\00:24:44.08 I can help the center. 00:24:44.11\00:24:45.98 Okay like the school is maybe a bit congested they know, 00:24:46.01\00:24:49.55 okay, I've been this some other these back 00:24:49.58\00:24:51.65 and I saw like, kid, okay, people are so mean... 00:24:51.69\00:24:55.89 So at least when you build a dormitory that is so nice. 00:24:55.92\00:24:58.96 They're not going to be congested 00:24:58.99\00:25:00.50 and it's so beautiful. 00:25:00.53\00:25:03.30 And then what happens is that the girls who have graduated 00:25:03.33\00:25:06.80 and gone to high school or to college or university, 00:25:06.84\00:25:08.70 they all come back when there is a vacation, 00:25:08.74\00:25:10.97 you know, when there is a break, 00:25:11.01\00:25:12.34 they have no home. 00:25:12.37\00:25:13.71 Once these girls leave their homes, 00:25:13.74\00:25:15.08 they run away from their home or their rescue, 00:25:15.11\00:25:16.58 they have no place to go back. 00:25:16.61\00:25:18.08 So the home is Kajiado Girls Rescue Center. 00:25:18.11\00:25:20.42 And all of them come in and that time 00:25:20.45\00:25:21.92 it really, really gets crowded because, you know, 00:25:21.95\00:25:23.75 you have the girls who are in high school, 00:25:23.79\00:25:25.12 you have the girls 00:25:25.15\00:25:26.49 who are in college and university, 00:25:26.52\00:25:27.86 plus the kids who are there. 00:25:27.89\00:25:29.22 And at times, 00:25:29.26\00:25:30.59 it's barely you cannot even move 00:25:30.63\00:25:31.96 in the dorm without banging or bashing to somebody, 00:25:31.99\00:25:33.33 you know, because it's so crowded, 00:25:33.36\00:25:34.70 there's so many girls. 00:25:34.73\00:25:36.13 You'd normally always, 00:25:36.16\00:25:37.83 you know, touch somebody or hit somebody 00:25:37.87\00:25:39.20 because there's no space 00:25:39.23\00:25:40.57 and, you know, the bathrooms are, 00:25:40.60\00:25:42.64 I mean, bad. 00:25:42.67\00:25:44.27 I mean, there's no bathroom, you know, there's no showers. 00:25:44.31\00:25:47.44 The showers are all broken down. 00:25:47.48\00:25:48.81 There's no shower, it's a bucket with scoop 00:25:48.84\00:25:50.18 and, you know, the conditions are horrible, 00:25:50.21\00:25:51.95 horrible for these girls. 00:25:51.98\00:25:53.82 In 2018, Maranatha agreed to provide 00:25:53.85\00:25:56.52 the Kajiado School 00:25:56.55\00:25:57.89 with a number of new structures, 00:25:57.92\00:25:59.42 including two new girl's dorms with showers and toilets, 00:25:59.45\00:26:02.92 a boy's dorm, and an administrative office. 00:26:02.96\00:26:05.76 Funding is needed for these new buildings 00:26:05.79\00:26:07.66 that will not only improve living conditions 00:26:07.70\00:26:09.80 for current students, 00:26:09.83\00:26:11.17 but allow the center of the space 00:26:11.20\00:26:12.53 to rescue more girls. 00:26:12.57\00:26:15.04 We are so excited. 00:26:15.07\00:26:17.71 We really thank God. 00:26:17.74\00:26:20.38 It's a time that we can say we have seen God in our life 00:26:20.41\00:26:24.38 and in our institution 00:26:24.41\00:26:26.21 because the work they are doing in our center 00:26:26.25\00:26:29.55 honestly, it touches so many lives. 00:26:29.58\00:26:34.62 You know, no kid should go through this, 00:26:34.66\00:26:36.02 you know, no child should go through this 00:26:36.06\00:26:38.16 and here is an opportunity as a volunteer you come 00:26:38.19\00:26:40.06 and help build these dorms, 00:26:40.10\00:26:41.43 these classrooms, these offices, 00:26:41.46\00:26:43.87 to interact with them, get to know them, guide them, 00:26:43.90\00:26:46.10 help them as donors. 00:26:46.13\00:26:47.97 I mean, you know, if you build these dorms, 00:26:48.00\00:26:50.11 these classrooms, these, 00:26:50.14\00:26:51.54 whatever is needed on the campus, 00:26:51.57\00:26:53.51 it will definitely change their lives. 00:26:53.54\00:26:55.11 Maranatha is beginning the work of providing 00:26:55.14\00:26:57.48 the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center 00:26:57.51\00:27:00.18 with adequate facilities, but we need your help. 00:27:00.22\00:27:03.25 Funding is needed for these new buildings 00:27:03.28\00:27:05.29 that will not only improve living conditions 00:27:05.32\00:27:07.49 for current students, 00:27:07.52\00:27:08.86 but allow the center of the space 00:27:08.89\00:27:10.33 to rescue more girls. 00:27:10.36\00:27:12.23 With your help, 00:27:12.26\00:27:13.60 the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center 00:27:13.63\00:27:15.93 can be a safe haven for even more children. 00:27:15.96\00:27:18.80 Give a gift to support Maranatha's work 00:27:18.83\00:27:21.27 on this campus. 00:27:21.30\00:27:22.64 Your support will provide these children 00:27:22.67\00:27:24.87 with the opportunity for a bright future. 00:27:24.91\00:27:27.78 I now feel myself as a potential doctor 00:27:27.81\00:27:29.81 to improve 00:27:29.84\00:27:31.18 the health conditions of my people. 00:27:31.21\00:27:32.55 A potential lawyer, 00:27:32.58\00:27:33.92 to advocate for the girl child's education. 00:27:33.95\00:27:37.19 Give us an opportunity. 00:27:37.22\00:27:40.09 Take charge, work diligently. 00:27:40.12\00:27:42.32 Make a change for a better future. 00:27:42.36\00:27:44.06 Make a change for a better future. 00:27:44.09\00:27:45.83 Make a change for a better future.
